The William Floyd School District recently welcomed members of the Rotary Club of Shirley and the Mastics to celebrate the "Robert Guerriero Rotary Student of the Month" for November, an award named in honor of former Board of Education vice president Robert Guerriero and longtime Rotarian, who passed away in October. For November, the Rotary Club honored two students - Willam Floyd High School seniors Gabriel Gonzalez and Michelle Segura. The ceremony, attended by district officials, family members and each student's chosen teacher, included the presentation by Rotary Club members Suffolk County Legislator Jim Mazzarella, Dr. Fred Miller and Dr. Paul Casciano.
Gabriel is described as a natural leader and role model for his peers with a tenacious and determined personality that has allowed him to overcome adversity. Gabriel is a member of the varsity soccer team and earned the Academic All-American Award during his senior season. He has maintained excellent grades while challenging
himself with honors and advanced placement courses. He was also selected as this year's homecoming king. His ambition and resourcefulness will continue to be the driving force for his success. Gabriel, who attended the ceremony with his mother, chose varsity soccer coach Paul Paniccia to introduce him. At William Floyd, Gabriel previously attended John S. Hobart Elementary School and William Paca Middle School.
Michelle Segura is described as an accomplished student who is involved in various school activities including serving as
vice president of the student government and as a member of the varsity softball team. Michelle was also this year's homecoming queen. In addition to maintaining excellent grades, Michelle volunteers her time to help others through organizations such as the Dezy Strong Foundation and participating in autism awareness activities, as well as the suicide prevention walk at Jones Beach. Michelle chose William Floyd High School teacher Luciana Licavoli to introduce her. At William Floyd, Michelle previously attended Wiliam Floyd Elementary School and William Floyd Middle School.
Eastport-South Manor Jr.-Sr. High School classes and clubs united in their efforts to assist community organizations during the holiday season by hosting the school’s annual Stuff-ASchool Project.

This new year is the last year as county executive for Steve Bellone. The eighth Suffolk County executive (H. Lee Dennison was the first, taking office in 1960), Bellone, a Democrat from North Babylon is term-limited after 12 years in office.
He was a member of the Babylon Town Board and that town’s supervisor before his election in 2011 as county executive—the top job in Suffolk County government. He is a lawyer.
Dave Calone of Setauket, a lawyer, too, and a former federal and state prosecutor, announced this summer that he is seeking to be the Democratic candidate for county executive in 2023. Calone has also held several positions on Long Island among them being a trustee of the Long Island Power Authority and a board member of the Community Development Corp., an affordable housing nonprofit. In launching his campaign, he noted he already had $1 million in campaign contributions.
Democrat Jay Schneiderman said in November that he is considering a run for the position. “I’ll be a good candidate,” declared Schneiderman, who is the only person to ever serve as a supervisor of two Suffolk towns—first East Hampton and then, after 12 years as a Suffolk County legislator, supervisor of the Town of Southampton. He
resides in Southampton and has western Suffolk roots: he grew up in Hauppauge.
No Republican has announced her or his candidacy yet for county executive. But Suffolk Republican Chairman Jesse Garcia says his party has a “deep bench” of potential GOP nominees and he is optimistic that the Republican candidate will win.
There has not been a Republican Suffolk County executive since Robert Gaffney, an attorney and former FBI agent, who served three terms from 1991 to 2003. Previously, Gaffney, who then lived in Miller Place, had been a state assemblyman.
But 2023 could be a good year for a GOP candidate for county executive considering Republican wins in Suffolk this past year and the year before. In 2021, a Republican majority took control of the Suffolk County Legislature. And last year, in what was described as a the “red wave” that moved across Long Island, Suffolk GOP wins included Nick LaLota, former chief of staff of the legislature and a trustee of the Village of Amityville, to the U.S. House of Representatives in the lst C.D.
Republican sources, meanwhile, say that Brookhaven Town Supervisor Edward Romaine of Center Moriches might become the
Peer Support is simply one person with similar experiences helping another find change. This is not a new idea. The Bible gives us a very good example of peer support in Exodus 17:9-13.
9 And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand. 10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12 But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. 13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the
sword.
In my teaching on the subject
I like to use a similar example.
I have a veteran stand up and hold a glass of water straight out, when he show signs of trouble holding the glass I have two veterans go to him and sit him in a comfortable chair and then one on each side hold up his arm. I then have a veteran chaplain take the cup from the veteran. Unfortunately traumatic stress and moral injury get stronger (heavier) the longer one holds them in. However, like holding the cup, relief is possible.
As veterans we need to help each other since a nonveteran has no idea of our problems, or how to help us. Let us look at the problem from the start. When we entered the service we were sent to a basic training camp where at least a barracks full of strangers were trained first to be buddies (peers) and then in a whole new lifestyle. I have asked many veterans if they could
GOP candidate for county executive this year.
Brookhaven Town’s 70th supervisor, Romaine was elected to that office in a special election in 2012. He left the Suffolk County Legislature to run for town supervisor following the tragic death of his son, Keith, a town councilman. Keith, of Moriches, died at 36 after being struck with pneumonia. Ed left the legislature committed to do what Keith would have pursued in Brookhaven Town.
Ed was a history teacher in the Hauppauge School District, where he taught for 10 years. In 1980, he entered public service as the Brookhaven’s first commissioner of Housing and Community Development and was later appointed its director of Economic Development.
He was a member of the Suffolk Legislature from 1986 through 1989 when he was elected Suffolk County clerk, a position he held for 16 years. In 2005, he returned to the legislature and was re-elected three times— leaving to run for Brookhaven Town supervisor. In 2003 he ran for county executive but lost to then Democrat, since a Republican, Steve Levy.
Said Calone in a statement in July: “I’m running for county executive to make sure everyone benefits from the same kind of opportunities that
I have enjoyed growing up in Suffolk County. I’m eager to get to work for the people of Suffolk, to enable everyone to have the chance to get a good paying job, to protect our clean air and water, to help families afford to live here, and to create safe, thriving communities.”
Calone co-founded the Suffolk County Forward program, an effort to provide support to county businesses and workers when COVID-19 struck, served as chairman of the county’s Superstorm Sandy Review Task Force, and created the Long Island Emerging Technologies Fund.
He tried to be the Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2016 in the lst C.D. but was defeated in a Democratic primary by Anna Throne-Holst, then the Southampton Town supervisor. She lost to Republican Lee Zeldin in the general election.
Schneiderman, after graduating from Hauppauge High School— where his history teacher was Ed Romaine—attended Ithaca College and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry. He then was awarded two Masters of Arts degrees, one in education from the State University of New York at Cortland, and one in administration from Long Island University-C.W. Post.
He was a teacher of science, mathematics—and also music. Schneiderman is an accomplished drummer. Meanwhile, he also managed his family’s motel in Montauk and subsequently formed his own property management company.
Schneiderman’s first position in government came in 1991 when he was appointed a member of the Town of East Hampton Zoning Board of Appeals. He became its chairman in 1996. He served in that capacity until 1999 when he was elected to the first of two terms as the supervisor of the Town of East Hampton.
In 2003, he was elected a member of the Suffolk County Legislature, serving as its deputy presiding officer from 2014 to the end of his term in 2015. He was termlimited as a county legislator but having moved to Southampton was eligible to run for the supervisor’s job in that town. In 2018, he ran for Suffolk County comptroller but lost to the incumbent, GOPer John M. Kennedy, Jr. of Nesconset. First elected Southampton Town supervisor in 2015, Schneiderman is term-limited from running for Southampton supervisor this year.
Of running for county executive, he says: “I have the right resume for the job.”
make that change of lifestyle alone and most all said no. As we went through our military life we changed posts and met new buddies to work with.
Going back to civilian life we left all that behind. Now some veterans need brotherhood and peer support more than ever.
We came home alone, with many different problems that civilians do not understand. For example some came home with military post traumatic stress or moral injury. Others have trouble keeping a job or smooth family life. Veterans who came home from World War II came
home as heroes from a war they won and since the civilian population worked hard to keep them supplied during the war they knew more about the war. Those veterans had new homes built for them, like those built in Levittown.
We do have the brotherhood and peer support as veterans and need to build it up. That peer support and brotherhood is found in veterans organizations. This is especially important now as the veterans are coming home now with a large number with deep depression due to the way they left Afghanistan. The organizations need our support to keep our GI Bill and other legislation that covers military service and veterans. It is important to know that numbers count so even if you do not actually attend their meeting you give them the numbers they need to be successful. So buddies please join with us in getting support or helping those in need.
Don't look now but the Nets have gotten themselves back in the conversation for a championship and Nets fans are rushing to the betting windows to take their red hot team. The Nets were right behind the Celtics to begin the season at 6 to 1 odds to win the NBA Championship this season, but those odds took a huge tumble as they struggled out of the gate. Brooklyn fell far and fast with sports books across the country and you were able to get the Nets at 13 to 1 odds on December 12th. Their winning streak and exceptional play has catapulted them back up the rankings and they are currently 8 to 1 to win it all.
With most of New York on the edge of their seat these past couple of months waiting
for the Aaron Judge signing to become official, for Steve Cohen to spend more money, and for the Jets and Giants to push for a playoff spot, many overlooked what Brooklyn has done. There was never a question if the Nets had the talent to go on a winning streak and very few doubted the team's ability to win a championship, but it seemed something was missing. Those questions have been put to rest here as December has rolled on and all of the optimism that fans had is showing loudly for all to see.
Betting on the Nets now, in a decreased market doesn't make much sense because they are so on fire. But, there will undoubtedly be a rough patch ahead and the betting number can come back and
be favorable again. If you are buying into this talent jump on that number when it gets to 10 to 1 or more and you could be holding a golden ticket come playoff time. The Nets might finally be living up to their giant expectations.
Whether you should hire an attorney when named as executor truly depends on what assets, if any, need to go through probate, the type of assets and size of the estate, family dynamics, estate tax considerations, and various other factors.
When a person dies with a Will, the nominated executor must file a probate petition with the Surrogate’s Court in order to be officially appointed by the Court and to be able to distribute the property left by the decedent. First, the executor will file the original Will and a certified copy of the death certificate along with the probate petition in Surrogate’s Court. Then, notice needs to be given to the decedent’s
next-of-kin who will either sign waivers and consents or be issued a citation to appear in court to have the opportunity to object to the Will. After jurisdiction is complete and issues with the Will, if any, are addressed, the Surrogate’s Court will issue a decree granting probate and Letters Testamentary will be issued to the executor, allowing him or her to marshal the decedent’s assets, pay any debts of the decedent, and distribute the property in the estate according to the terms of the Will.
The assets that pass through a Will are those in one’s sole name with no beneficiary or joint owner. Bank accounts, retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and living trusts with designated beneficiaries pass automatically
to the beneficiaries and do not have to be probated. So, even if the decedent left a Will naming you as executor, probate may not be needed.
On the other hand, where the Will does need to be probated, it is usually a good idea to hire an attorney. The probate
process can be highly technical and complicated, from the various documentation that needs to be provided to the challenging legal procedures involved. Moreover, transferring ownership of more complicated assets such as businesses or real estate is far from straight-forward, not
to mention that if a family member contests the Will there will most likely have to be litigation.
Finally, depending on the size of the estate, an estate tax return will have to be filed with the IRS. Having an experienced attorney is crucial so that the estate tax return is filed timely and properly and all available deductions and credits are utilized in order to minimize the estate tax owed.

Here’s how the story goes. In the dead of winter, two duck hunters and their trusty hunting dog drive their brand-new Range Rover out on to the ice of (choose: _______ [a] Long Island Sound, [b] Moriches Bay, [c] Shinnecock Bay, [d] Great South Bay, [e] body of water of your choice) and, seeing that there were no open leads to entice migratory birds to land, take out a stick of dynamite, light it and throw it as far out on the ice as they can. The plan is simple. The dynamite blows a substantial hole in the ice; they get back in the car and run the heater until the migratory birds arrive. They step out with their shotguns full of bird shot and bag much of the flock.
So, as the dynamite stick is flying through the air, the dog takes off after it, thinking that a game of fetch is exactly what will make his day. Grabbing the lit stick of dynamite in his mouth, he turns and starts running back to his master and fellow hunter. This of course alarms the hunters to no end. Seeing that waving their arms wildly and shouting, “no! no! no!’ isn’t
working, they fire their bird shot at the charging dog – striking fear into a bewildered Fido. Fido turns to his only source of cover – the car. Running under the car to hide, all is fine until he burns his rump on the still-hot exhaust pipe. As he yelps and takes off running again, the dynamite stick, which was left behind with the yelp, explodes. This sends the brand-new Range Rover, in many pieces, to the bottom of (choose: _______ [a] Long Island Sound, [b] Moriches Bay, [c] Shinnecock Bay, [d] Great South Bay, [e] body of water of your choice.)
Funny – but only apocryphal as every Coast Guard station north of the 40th degree of latitude was telling that story a couple of winters ago, swearing that one of the locals swore to them that they knew somebody that was related to somebody who knew the dog owner.

A man named Joseph was a 1st-century Jew from Nazareth who according to two evangelists was married to Mary the mother of Jesus. He was the legal guardian of Jesus. Joseph is venerated as St. Joseph by the Catholic, Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox churches. Anglicans also pay him homage and his feast day is observed by some Lutherans. In Catholic traditions Joseph is regarded as the patron saint of workers. The month of March is dedicated to Saint Joseph. Pope Pius IX declared him to be the protector and patron of the Catholic Church. Since he died in the presence of Jesus and Mary, he is the patron of a happy death and of the sick. St. Joseph has become the patron of various dioceses and places. Being a patron saint of virgins, he is venerated as “most chaste.” A specific veneration is tributed to the most chaste and pure heart of Saint Joseph. Several venerated images of St. Joseph have been granted a decree of canonical coronation by a pope. He is often depicted with lilies or spikenard. With modern growth of veneration to the Blessed Mother, the
theological veneration of Joseph has also increased and centers for studying this veneration have been instituted since the mid-20th century.
The letters of St. Paul are the oldest existing Christian writings. They talk about Mary without naming her but do not refer to Joseph. The Gospel of
Mark, believed to be the first written and dated around two decades after Paul also does not mention him.
The first appearance of Joseph is in the gospels of Luke and Matthew. These are dated from around 80-90 AD. They contain a genealogy of Jesus showing his ancestry
from King David but through different sons. Matthew follows the royal line from King David. Luke traces the royal line from Nathan, another son of David and Bathsheba. So, all the names between David and Joseph are different.
The stories of Jesus’ infancy only appear in Luke and
Matthew. In Luke’s gospel Joseph lives in Nazareth. Jesus is born in Bethlehem because Joseph and Mary must travel there to be counted in a census ordered by Caesar Augustus. Subsequently Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Unlike Matthew, Luke does not talk about Joseph being visited by an angel in dreams, the Massacre of the Innocents, or a journey into Egypt.
In Matthew’s account, Joseph obeys the direction of an angel to marry Mary. After the nativity of Jesus in Bethlehem, Joseph is told by an angel in a dream to take the family to Egypt to escape the massacre of the infants of Bethlehem ordered by Herod, Roman ruler of the Judean province. The last appearance of Joseph in the New Testament is the story of the Passover visit to the Temple when Jesus is 12 and is left behind. It should be noted that Joseph demonstrates perfect faith in complying with the angelic directives. Unlike Zechariah, father of John the Baptist, or even Mary herself, Joseph never expressed any doubt or hesitation.

Theresa Whelan, of Wading River, a longtime Suffolk County judge who served for more than ten years in family court and most recently as the county’s Surrogate’s Court judge, died December 26, 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 60.
Theresa Whelan always knew she wanted to be in public service. As a young attorney fresh out of Albany Law School, she began her legal career in 1988 as a Suffolk County Assistant County Attorney. She entered the court system in 1990 as a senior law clerk to Supreme Court Judge Eli Wagner, in Nassau County. She went on to work as a principal law clerk in Suffolk County for Supreme Court Judge Mary M. Werner and, later, Supreme Court Judge William B. Rebolini. During her 17 years in the Supreme Court, she worked in nearly every part, including civil litigation, guardianship, tax certiorari and condemnation cases as well as matrimonial matters.
She eventually took the bench herself in 2008 after she was elected to serve as a judge in Suffolk County Family Court. There, she heard primarily child abuse and neglect cases and presided over Family Treatment Court, where she worked to safely reunite families. Theresa Whelan became Suffolk County’s
Surrogate in 2019, presiding over proceedings involving wills, trusts and estates as well as guardianship matters. She retired in the summer of 2022, marking 32 years with the New York State court system.
Known for her commitment to improving court practices to better serve the needs of the public, Theresa Whelan mobilized several initiatives that helped families and children and that expanded access to justice for all court users. She was appointed Supervising Judge of the Suffolk County Family Court in 2016, and one of the many reforms she spearheaded was providing remote access to temporary orders of protection, allowing individuals to petition the court from a hospital, a police precinct, or a shelter. She was a catalyst of the FOCUS (Family Overcoming Crisis through Unified Services) initiative, a program that expedites access to services that address the trauma and developmental needs of children and parents in the court system.
She also served as lead judge of the Suffolk County Child Welfare Court Improvement Project, part of a statewide initiative to address court practices in cases where the court has removed children from their parents’ care. In 2016, Chief Administrative Judge Larry Marks
appointed her to the Family Court Advisory and Rules Committee. In 2018, former New York Court of Appeals Chief Judge Janet DiFiore appointed her to the New York State Commission on Parental Representation, which is tasked with holding public hearings and reporting on the status and quality of lawyers representing parents in child welfare cases. Since 2016, Theresa Whelan had been the chair of Suffolk County’s Attorneys for Children Advisory Committee, which is responsible for considering the qualifications of new applicants to the Attorneys for Children panel as well as reviewing the recertification applications for existing lawyers.
An active member of the Suffolk County Bar Association, Theresa
Whelan was co-chair of the Family Court Committee from 2013 to 2016 and lectured for the association’s law academy and other legal organizations. As a member of the Attorney for Child Task Force, she and the other members received the Suffolk County Bar Association’s President’s Award in 2016 for their work. She was also a member of and past president of the Suffolk County Women’s Bar Association.
In March of 2022, in recognition of her leadership and commitment to improving the lives of children and families, Theresa Whelan was honored at a Women’s History Month celebration, “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope,” presented by Suffolk County District Administrative Judge Andrew A. Crecca and the Suffolk County Women in the Courts Committee. In June, Theresa Whelan was awarded the Marilyn R. Menge Award at the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York 2022 Convention.
Prior to beginning her legal career, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Master of Science degree in Policy Analysis and Public Management from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Her devotion to her family was boundless. She and her husband,
Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Thomas F. Whelan, recently celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary. Together they raised two children, Joseph and Erin. Theresa Whelan was a proud grandmother to Erin’s one-year-old daughter, Andrea.
In her spare time, Theresa Whelan enjoyed the outdoors. She could often be found hiking, kayaking, or spending time at the beach. She ran in several half marathons in recent years.
She continued her dedication to the public good even after her cancer diagnosis, volunteering to participate in clinical trials, despite the risks, in hopes of helping find a cure. Her family, friends and former colleagues remember her as someone who braved challenges with grace and compassion. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Theresa Whelan is survived by her husband, Justice Thomas F. Whelan; son, Joseph Whelan; daughter, Erin, her husband, Alex Meyers, and their daughter, Andrea; mother, Joan Bryant, and her husband John Bauer; brothers, Jack Bryant and Christopher Bryant; sisters, Vaughn Bogucki and Victoria Yule; together with many nieces and nephews.
