Residents in the Town of Brookhaven will decide who will represent them as their next

Republican Councilman Kevin LaValle and Democrat Lisa Di Santo Face Off for Brookhaven Town Clerk

Town Clerk when they head to the polls for the special election scheduled for January 17th. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. - 9 p.m. Early voting will commence

on January 7th. At stake is the unexpired term left by retired Town Clerk, Donna Lent. Vying for the seat are Brookhaven Town Third District Republican

Councilman, Kevin LaValle, and Democrat Lisa Di Santo. During interviews last week with South Shore Press, the candidates discussed their views on the

responsibilities of the office of Town Clerk, and the attributes each says they will bring to the office.

and just in general cleaning up the area so businesses owners will want to come to the area."

LaValle estimates 37,000 vehicles travel Middle Country Road daily with higher volumes during the holidays.

From a recreational standpoint, LaValle said the Town has broken ground on a new, state of the art multi-generational park in Selden behind Hawkins Path Elementary School, which LaValle reports will feature four ball fields, pickle ball and basketball courts, roller hockey rinks, and multipurpose fields.

looking to see how to get this done."

The Town Clerk is responsible for giving licenses, death and birth certificates and, LaValle noted, "we work with fellow colleagues to bring up issues and lobby various levels of government to change policy and make further improvements."

LaValle is a 1995 alumnus of Centereach High School. In 2000

he received a BA with a major in Political Science from Salisbury University. His brother, John Jay LaValle, is a former supervisor of the Town of Brookhaven, and his cousin is retired Senator Kenneth LaValle who served over 40 years in the State Legislature.

Suffolk County GOP Chairman Jesse Garcia gave a nod to LaValle's candidacy: "Kevin LaValle has earned a strong reputation of

working on behalf of Brookhaven Town as Councilman making serving his constituents a hallmark of his career. As Town Clerk, Kevin will continue to make government run more efficiently and ensure municipal services will be efficiently delivered to taxpayers. Kevin LaValle possesses the right mix of experience in the private sector ongoing with his public service."

Brookhaven Town Third District Councilman Kevin LaValle, (R), has been endorsed by the Republican and Conservative parties as their candidate for Brookhaven Town Clerk.

LaValle was first elected to the Town Board in 2013, and won consecutive terms in 2015, 2017 and 2019. Residents then approved a referendum limiting terms for Town Board members to four year terms. LaValle is currently in the 3rd of his first four year term. If LaValle is defeated in his bid for Town Clerk, he will have the ability to run for the Town Council for two additional fouryear terms.

Throughout his tenure as Town Councilman, LaValle noted landmark accomplishments as he looks to capture the Town Clerk's seat. "Right off the bat and out the gate, working with chambers of commerce and property owners to bring new businesses has always been key to me," LaValle said. Renowned businesses that have been ushered into the 3rd Council District under his administration include but are not limited to Starbucks, and Bristol Living Facility in the Farmingville sector of the district, and Top Golf, Texas Roadhouse and Brownstone's in the Centereach community.

Eliminating blight along County Road 83 that juts through the council district to Smithaven Mall is another accomplishment LaValle notes: "We have addressed over 30 sites with illegal signage and graffiti, fewer vacancies,

Looking ahead in his pursuit of the Town Clerk's office, LaValle says he's looking forward to the challenge and giving 110%.

It's his private sector as a small mortgage loan officer, combined now with his governmental experience as an elected public servant LaValle says he will bring to the Town Clerk's office. "There are a lot of moving parts in the Clerk's office - Donna Lent did a great job and the staff continues to do so." LaValle acknowledged security remains a top priority for the administration. "We're aware of what's been going on in the county, and here in Brookhaven we've remained proactive and we were ahead of the game," LaValle said. "All of our records are fully in the Cloud and are Microsoft protected. Also," LaValle continued, "even before Suffolk County was hacked, we already had a cyber security policy in place and we were the first town in Suffolk County to get a $1 million cyber security insurance policy; we also have Laserfiche to help our employees in the jobs that they do," LaValle added. "We'll be looking to upgrade our technology systems so we are even more efficient to our residents and employees. We want to make good decisions, and we're continuing to talk to the best computer people around," LaValle continued. "Within two years to being elected to the Town Board I worked with Donna Lent to have our Town Board, Zoning Board and Planning Board meetings live and online," LaValle explained. "Then the pandemic hit but we were already ahead of the game while other municipalities were

Brookhaven Democrats Give Lisa Di Santo Nod for Brookhaven Town Clerk

Lisa Di Santo has received the unanimous endorsement of the Brookhaven Town Democrat Committee as their candidate for Brookhaven Town Clerk in the January 17th special election. Early voting will take place from January 7th through January 15th. Polls on election day will be open from 6 a.m. and will close for voting at 9 p.m.

Di Santo is a former secondarylevel social studies teacher of 20 years. She is now a senior home companion and works with clients who have Alzheimers and Dementia.

The East Patchogue resident has two daughters, both graduates of Bellport High School, and a grandson. She sought and lost election to Brookhaven Town's 5th Council District in 2017 against Councilman Neil Foley.

Di Santo served on the South Country School Board for 11 years. She prides herself on her community activism. Active with the Bellport Area Community Action Committee, Di Santo served as the organization's vice president. She is a founding member of the Boys and Girls Club of Bellport, and was Legislative Chairperson for the Parent-Teacher Association. Di Santo was also a founding member of the South Haven PTA. "An integral part of

what I did here was that I pushed for full day pre-k which led to the creation of the pre-k building in the South Haven School," she explained.

With her sights set on the Town Clerk's office, Di Santo asserts she would make changes to have the office and its services more "accessible" to residents. "I'm a proponent of good governance, and when I speak to people about Brookhaven Town, I hear the same issues, and it's that the Town Clerk's office is the gatekeeper for information, and all too often, it's difficult for people to access information, particularly in the FOIL process," Di Santo said. "The Town Clerk's office needs more accessibility, because the people are stonewalled. Information is antiquated and there's a lot to be said about getting information," she said. "People say they don't feel comfortable and are asking why, with six council districts, the Town Clerk can't be available twice a year in their community, because many residents don't have cars. Also," Di Santo asked, "why don't we have more services in Spanish?"

Di Santo says if elected, she would be a non-partisan Town Clerk. "The Town Clerk's office is defined by rules and regulations by the Town Board and New York State law," she said, "and as Town Clerk I'm going to be objective and run

meetings more efficiently. Much of what the Town Clerk's office does is issues licenses takes far too long to do, which behooves the question of how secure are Town records in the Town Clerk's office?"

Di Santo is an alumna of Longwood High School. She received her bachelor with dual majors in Social Science Education and Psychology from SUNY Oneonta, and a masters in Liberal Studies from SUNY Stony Brook.

Brookhaven Town Democrat Committee Chairman Anthony Portesy said, "Lisa was on the front lines of the redistricting battle in Brookhaven, and brings with her a level of passion, commitment and determination to better our community that is matched by few, and admired by many."

Helping Families with Thanksgiving Meals

On November 19 and 20, the Town of Brookhaven’s INTERFACE Program and JVC Broadcasting hosted a food drive event at Compare Foods in Patchogue. The 12,008 pounds of food collected by the drive provided holiday meals for 1264 families in need. Pictured are JVC Broadcasting’s on-air radio

personality, “The Wiseman” (left) and Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine (right). The All Suffolk Car Clubs, P.J. Gelinas Junior High School in East Setauket, Sachem North and Sachem East High Schools helped to collect food, as well as grocery gift card donations.

Supervisor Romaine said,

“There are so many families in Brookhaven Town that are struggling to put food on the table every day, but we are here to helps them. The Youth Bureau’s Food Drive help these families enjoy a real Thanksgiving meal with their loved ones and it

also reminds us about the true meaning of the holiday season.”

The North Shore Rail Trail Project Wins Quality of Life Award

Investment Complements

County Executive’s Vision to Create a County-Wide Network of Pedestrian and Bicyclist Trails

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Legislator Sarah Anker announced that the North Shore Rail Trail project is the winner of this year’s American Society of Civil Engineers Quality of Life Award. The Quality of Life Award is presented to a project that has improved the quality of life for residents on Long Island. The award was accepted by members from the Suffolk County Department of Public Works.

The North Shore Rail Trail is a 10-mile recreational path that extends from Mt. Sinai to Wading River. The multi-use trail is equipped with various

amenities including kiosks at trailheads and quarter-mile markers. The North Shore Rail Trail was built along the Wading River railway line, which was abandoned in 1938 and is now owned by the Long Island Power Authority. There are 36 road crossings and links connecting Mount Sinai, Miller Place, Sound Beach, Rocky Point, Shoreham and Wading River. This project was completed in collaboration with local towns, villages, utilities and our partners at NYSDOT.

“Suffolk County is home to some amazing recreational attractions like our world class beaches, natural parks and countless outdoor activities that attract people from all over the world,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “I am honored that the North Shore Rail Trail has received the Quality of Life Award and

I hope that it encourages more people to explore all of the exciting recreational activities Suffolk has to offer.”

Legislator Sarah Anker said: “Since being elected as your Suffolk County Legislator, I’ve worked to facilitate this project that was envisioned 50 years ago. Thanks to the collaboration and commitment of all levels of government, our utility providers and the support of our local community, I am pleased to have this project recognized. This path will not only provide a safer way to recreate, but it also brings the community together and provides economic support for our local businesses. I thank the County Executive, the Department of Public Works, NV5 Engineering, DF Stone Construction and my staff who have been instrumental in the successful completion of North Shore Rail Trail.”

The path provides the opportunity for biking and hiking with multiple access points throughout the corridor. The historic trail allows for an improvement in recreational options for residents as well as promote local tourism throughout Suffolk County and complements the County Executive’s vision for an interconnected hiking and biking trail network throughout the County.

In an effort to create ecotourism along the trail, community members can access downtown Rocky Point and browse in shops all the way into Mount Sinai. Residents can also stop at the various hamlets to grab a bite to eat with friends and family.

In March 2020, Suffolk County completed its countywide Hike and Bike Master Plan, a comprehensive and coordinated vision for a

connected network of hiking and biking trails county-wide to facilitate transportation, recreation, tourism, and economic development. The master plan mapped the existing hiking and biking network, identified the gaps in that network, and developed a plan to prioritize and build out those gaps. The plan recommended over 1,200 miles of bike facilities, placing 84% of Suffolk residents within ½ -mile of a hike or bike facility.

The plan also calls for the completion of a one-mile infrastructure gap between the 3.5-mile Setauket Greenway and the 10-mile North Shore Rail Trail, creating a link from Setauket to Wading River.

The federal government funded 94 percent of the project ($8,320,000) and the County funded the remaining 6 percent ($500,000) for a total project cost of $8,820,000.

Suffolk County Combats Southern Pine Beetle

Suffolk County, in partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), is working to help combat the invasive Southern Pine Beetle and prevent further damage to the Pine Barrens region here on Long Island. Southern Pine Beetles (SPB) have noticeably invaded areas throughout Suffolk County, with a large area of infected trees located in Southaven County Park.

There are no current methods to fully eradicate the beetle, however the accepted and most effective method of minimizing the spread of the Southern Pine Beetle includes cutting down infested trees and closely infected trees to create a buffer zone. This buffer zone is essential to halt the spread of the pest, as the beetle typically spreads to pines that lie in close proximity to infected trees. Once the trees are felled, they will be left in place for the benefit of the forest. The trees will naturally decompose over time and replenish the nutrient cycle within the ecosystem.

Suffolk Legislator Jim Mazzarella visited Southaven

County Park to gain a better understanding of the efforts being utilized to both mitigate the spread and protect the public. Dead trees adjacent to the trails are being cut down to protect the park patrons from potential hazards. Teams of workers are also cutting live but infected trees in order to halt the spread of infestation.

DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said, "With our partners in Suffolk County, DEC will continue to proactively work to combat the environmental threat Southern Pine Beetle poses to the region.”

Southern Pine Beetles, or SPB, are a bark beetle that infests pitch pine trees. This small beetle is only 2-4mm in length, making it about the size of a grain of rice, and is red-brown to black in color.

SPBs tunnel through the pine tree, disrupting the flow of nutrients and can kill an adult pine tree in 2-4 months. These beetles are native to the Southeastern United States but have been expanding up the Eastern Seaboard in recent years.

Legislator Mazzarella said: “I understand that significant tree

removal will have a devastating impact on these parks and the residents who frequent them. As unfortunate as these drastic actions may be, the necessity of eradicating this invasive insect will protect the further decimation of these parklands and their surrounding communities."

Suffolk County and NYS DEC in conjunction with the Central Pine Barrens Commission are working hard to regain a foothold and combat this major threat to

the Pines Barrens.

Funding for this project is being provided by both Suffolk County and the NYS DEC. Tree cutting will begin around November 29, 2022 and the project will continue through 2023. The affected parks will remain open to the public, but there may be temporary closures of active work areas within these parks at any time; Please comply with posted signage/warnings when using the parks.

With Robert Moses having gotten me fired from my first job as a journalist after I wrote about a fierce assault on civil rights protesters by his security force on the opening day of his 1964-1965 New York World's Fair, and after two years of my challenging his plan to build a four-lane highway on Fire Island, I was interested in a show which in recent weeks has been playing in Manhattan.

Its title: “Straight Line Crazy.” The "straight line," noted the review in The New Yorker, “is a reference to Moses’s compulsive tendency to draw straight lines on maps and then, implausibly, to gather the resources and marshal the bureaucratic will to make them physical facts as roadways.”

Actor Ralph Fiennes plays Moses and “throughout,” says the review by Vinson Cunningham, “ably displays Moses’s faults—his stubbornness, his dishonesty, his bullying, his barely veiled prejudices against people of color and the poor.”

Most of it involves Moses’s activities in New York City—his devastation of neighborhoods by highways he had constructed. Moses was not only crazy about straight lines but also cars although he didn’t have a driver’s license and didn’t drive one. He utilized a chauffeur. Long Island references in the play include how “when Moses is just beginning to wield influence, and planning to open Jones Beach to the public” he made “it possible…to get there by the new Southern State Parkway.” But “not really possible,”

Cunningham writes, “for the carless riffraff.”

Add to that: by having bridges on Southern State built low, Moses sought to prevent people of color from New York City traveling by bus to Jones Beach.

Moses was a Suffolk County resident and that’s how I began tangling with him. It was 1962 and I just got a job as a reporter at the Babylon Town Leader, a newspaper which for decades had criticized Moses’s projects. As Robert Caro relates in his award-winning biography of Moses, The Power Broker, Moses had the newspapers of New York City in his pocket. But on Long Island, The Leader was doing what the press is supposed to do: serve as a watchdog, a check on power.

The week I started at the Leader, Moses had just announced his plan to build a four-lane highway on Fire Island (wider than the island at one point). It would, claimed Moses, “anchor” Fire Island from storms. I was assigned to go to Fire Island to do an article about the impacts of the highway on the nature and communities of the 32-mile long roadless barrier beach.

A walk in exquisite Sunken Forest made clear the environmental significance of Fire Island immediately. I learned about the magic of its 17 communities from Fire Islanders who loved this “barefoot paradise.”

I wrote a story, the first of many. What an uphill battle! Hardly any elected officials would say or do

anything in opposition to Moses. Meanwhile, we found out how the four-lane highway Moses built to the west, along Jones Beach, rather than being an “anchor,” needed to be regularly bolstered with sand pushed along its sides by bulldozers working furtively at night.

The first call I received the morning the first story appeared was from environmentalist Murray Barbash who, with his brother-in-law, attorney Irving Like, was to go on to organize the Citizens Committee for a Fire Island National Seashore. The view was that Moses and his Fire Island highway plan couldn’t be stopped on the state level because of the enormous power of Moses in the state. He had run

for governor of New York in 1934 and suffered a huge defeat, so he amassed power by running state commissions and authorities. If Fire Island was to be saved it would have to be through federal action. Also, the National Seashore initiative offered a very positive goal.

Interior Secretary Stewart Udall visited Fire Island and embraced the vision. Conservation-minded Laurance Rockefeller, the brother of then Governor Nelson Rockefeller, who replaced Moses as chairman of the state Council of Parks in 1963, liked the Seashore concept. Moses was furious. He confronted Rockefeller insisting he put a lid on his brother. If Rockefeller wouldn’t, Moses threatened to resign

from his many commission and authority posts. (This, according to a Leader source, a staffer at the Long Island State Park Commission which Moses chaired for four decades.) Somehow, Moses thought the state would fall apart without him. Rockefeller wouldn’t be steamrolled. So, Moses quit his government positions.

The bill establishing a Fire Island National Seashore was passed by Congress and signed by President Johnson in 1964. But the Leader was sold that year. I had also covered the early civil rights struggle on Long Island and went to the World’s Fair on its opening day to report on civil rights activists from Suffolk protesting racism in hiring at it. Moses had stayed head of the private corporation which ran the World’s Fair. The attack by his security force on the protesters was intense.

The chain that had bought the Leader ran my article on what happened as a front-page story with the headline: “Jail Pavilion for Suffolk CORE.” But no longer was I protected by a Moses-critical management. I got a call the morning after the publication of my piece, which also featured my photos, to see the chain’s associate publisher, Wilson Stringer. He told me: “Mr. Moses called and is very upset with you. You’re fired.”

“Straight Line Crazy” is written by David Hare. It runs through December 18th.

The MVP Race Is On

At this point of the NFL season we have a pretty good idea of what teams have overachieved, which ones have stunk up the joint, and what is for real in the overall season. The same goes for the players. We can no longer say that Geno Smith's resurgence has been just a flukey hot start, nor can we say that Aaron Rodgers still has time to turn his season around. With that being said, this is a great time to look at the MVP future odds across the NFL.

Before the season began Josh Allen was the odds on favorite, and had the most money thrown his way to take home the award, but Patrick Mahomes was not far behind. Mahomes has done what his backers believed and then some. Without Tyreek Hill, Mahomes now leads the MVP odds at -150. Mahomes leads the league in passing yards and TDs as he eyes his 2nd MVP. That

shouldn't be a surprise to most fans.

Jalen Hurts however, that is a surprise to many. Hurts is +300 to take home the award and even with the Eagles struggling to get wins recently, Hurts' legs have been doing all the talking for him. Just two weeks ago his odds were doubled and in the preseason he was 12-1 in many spots.

Tua Tagovailoa is next up with 5 to 1 odds to put the award on his mantle. Tua might be the best value based on his eye popping change and the great 'story' it is for the NFL. Tua's stock will also rise if the Dolphins are able to overtake the preseason Super Bowl favorite Bills for the East lead. The only drawback of Tagovailoa is that he missed a couple of games and his stats will likely be less than Mahomes across the board because of that.

Finally, there is Josh Allen. Allen was as low as -250 in the preseason to win what seemed to be his award for the taking and now has fallen all the way

down to 14 to 1 odds. But, don't count out Allen who is on track to beat his personal passing yards, career highs. He sits in 2nd in passing yards currently.

He has the same overall number of touchdowns as he did last season and he has an outside shot to rush for nearly 1,000 yards on the ground.

Names like Joe Burrow at 151, Justin Jefferson at 16-1 and Nick Chubb at 20-1 have also surfaced but while there is plenty of time left in the season, they are decidedly looking in from the outside. Hurts is exciting and garnering a ton of attention, Tua might be able to overcome his missing games and Allen might be able to crawl back into this thing, but the smart money is still on the leader in Mahomes. What he is doing minus Tyreek Hill has sports writers around the country in awe. He will have the story, the stats, and likely a first place team to back up his resume.

Sometimes the smart money is to take the favorite and not look for the big payout.

ASK NANCY

Q: A:

Your friend is correct, advance directives are valuable documents that are done in advance of you needing them. A Health Care Proxy, Living Will and HIPPA are documents you can complete as part of your estate plan or on your own. Medical Orders of Life Sustaining Treatments (“MOLST”), Do Not Resuscitate (“DNR”), and Do Not Intubate (“DNI”) documents are medical orders that are signed by a physician or other appropriate medical professional.

A health care proxy is a document that states who is authorized to make medical decisions on your behalf if a doctor finds that you lack the mental capacity to make them on your own. Some choose to sign a health care proxy when

they are creating their estate planning documents, while others are prompted to sign such a document when they are admitted to the hospital or undergoing a procedure or surgery. A lack of mental capacity can be temporary, for example if someone is under anesthesia, or more long-term loss, as from dementia or some other cognitive impairment. Choosing a health care agent can be difficult. The best health care agent is someone who knows your wishes and who you believe will act as you would, making the choices you would make. Remember, this person is substituting their judgment for your own. In line with a health care proxy, a HIPPA form is another document used to allow the health care proxy as well as others should you choose, to be able to discuss your health

VETERANS WAY

On Pearl Harbor Day, the American flag should be flown at half-staff until sunset to honor those who died as a result of the attack on the U.S. military forces in Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor Day is not a federal holiday – government offices, school, and businesses do not close. Some organizations may hold special events in memory of those killed or injured at Pearl Harbor. This year is the 80th anniversary of that attack.

On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941 the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, killing 2,403 Americans and injuring 1,178 others. The attack sank four U.S. Navy battleships and damaged four others. It also damaged three cruisers, three destroyers and one minelayer. Aircraft losses were 188 destroyed and 159 damaged.

On December 8, in a joint session of Congress, President Franklin Roosevelt made a speech in which he called December 7, 1941 “a date which will live in infamy.” Congress then declared war on Japan. Three days later, Japan’s allies Germany and Italy declared war against the United States. For a second time, Congress reciprocated, declaring

war on the European powers. More than two years after the start of World War II, the United States entered World War II. The war in Europe ended on May 8, 1945. The war with Japan ended September 2, 1945. However, even though we won the war we lost 291,557 servicemen in combat and 670,846 were wounded.

Six months after the air raid on Pearl Harbor, the Office of War Information (OWI) was created. The concentrated on subjects like aircraft factories, training for war, women in the workforce and the armed services. The OWI documented and celebrated American patriotism in the military and on the home front. Basically our whole civilian population supported the actions in the war.

In 1990, leading up to the 50th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Congress established the Pearl Harbor Commemorative Medal. This also known as the Pearl Harbor Survivor’s medal and was awarded to anyone who was in the U.S. Armed Forces and who was present in Hawaii on December 7, 1941, and participated in combat

The Importance of Advance Directives

situation with doctors, obtain medical reports, and discuss plans of care.

A living will is a companion document to the health care proxy and is intended to state your wishes if you should be in an irreversible condition with no reasonable expectation

of recovery. It is meant to direct the substituted decisionmaker in their actions. The living will often directs an agent to withhold or withdraw treatments if recovery is not expected. The document can list specific treatments to be withheld, such as

cardiopulmonary resuscitation, dialysis, antibiotics, etc.

It is essential that your documents include agent(s) that would respect your wishes when unable to speak for yourself. Having such documents executed is crucial for peace of mind and clear direction in an otherwise stressful time. Seeking the advice of an Elder Law attorney when making these decisions can ensure your wishes are made clear to those that will be making the hard decisions.

victories. As a result we all came home very differently than those that served in the World Wars. While they not only came home as heroes, they also came home in very large numbers together, usually transported by ships. Those of us from the Korean War came home by airplanes in very small numbers. The war was often referred to as a police action so we just came home and were forgotten. Those coming home from Vietnam also came home in small numbers.

operations against the attack. The medal was also awarded to civilians who were killed or injured in the attack, or civilians involved in combat against the enemy during the attack.

In 1994, the Congress designated December 7 of each year as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. The joint resolution was signed by President Bill Clinton on August

23, 1994. On November 29, Clinton issued a proclamation declaring December 7, 1994, the first National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

Unfortunately, that war was just about the last one we ended with a victory. The Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Afghanistan War, our troops simply packed up and came home without any signing of the end to the war or

Unfortunately, the public was against us entering the war and did not realize the fact that if our troops refused to go to war they would be put in jail, so they were often spit on when they came back home. They like the Korean veterans were not acknowledged as veterans by the public. However, since those of you that served in the Afghanistan War are recognized for defending our country after 9/11, you are not only acknowledged for your service, but now so are the rest of us recognized as veterans that served our county. So we thank you guys, our brothers, not only for what you did accomplish, but for helping us get recognized with you.

Teen Winter Fun with the Library

The days are still getting shorter. While we’re shivering through the next couple of months, we can plan for the Spring.

We’ve written about what to do when the engine stops or how to get rescued when things go really wrong. We’ve also written about how to commission the boat for a new season. But a lot goes on between Memorial Day and Labor Day and there are some simple preventative, proactive things that you can do to stay at the razor’s edge of engine functionality. This column is about some of those ideas.

Hot, Hotter and Hottest!

Perhaps non-intuitively, most engine manufacturers will tell you that over-heating is the number one cause of engine problems. Maybe that is a function of coastal mariners having a tendency to find themselves hard aground on sand more often than rocks. That usually means sand gets up into the raw water intakes. Maybe it is a function of mariners simply not paying attention to how salt and small marine creatures can get up into the fine plumbing of raw water intakes and the connective plumbing. Just like our hearts, a little blockage can do a world of hurt. What to do?

Well, how about checking the raw water intakes on your lower unit? When you trim up

the engine to keep the barnacles from growing on your prop, take a look at the intakes. If they aren’t shiny clean, clean them and see what might be in there. If you think that something got pushed in while you were cleaning the intake, every engine has a spigot. It is usually integrated with the warm-water tell-tale (where the hot water is released from its engine cooling efforts and returned to sea), which you can remove usually with your fingers and screw a garden hose into its place. Let cold water run through the engine for 10-15 minutes (with the engine off – if there is sand in there, you want to wash it out, not grind it out!)

If you wait until your electronic sensor shuts down the engine due to overheating, it is too late.

Sacrificial Zincs

Most mariners are aware that there are stray currents “naturally” in our waters due to natural electrolysis and due to unnatural stray currents caused by poor electronics at the marina. In the first case, when two dissimilar metals are in contact with each other, the base requirement for galvanic corrosion is in place. What does dissimilar mean? Well, how about a bronze propeller and a stainless-steel drive shaft? Or stainless-steel screws holding aluminum trim tabs in place? But more than contact is required. An “electrolyte” has to

The Prevent Defense – Before the Engine Breaks Down!

be present too – a substance to conduct electricity (the flow of ions) between the two dissimilar metals. And an excellent electrolyte is seawater, which our boats are sitting in. In the second “unnatural” case, if there is a nonfunctioning grounding system at the dockside power source, or an improper grounding of the neutral-white power conductor or just unapproved wiring near the water, there can easily be a charge snaking through the waters of the marina.

In either case, the least “noble” metal, zinc, will be there to be eaten away so your brass propeller isn’t! So check these zincs regularly. And don’t forget about the pencil zincs.

What pencil zincs, Bunky? Well, remember that raw (sea)

water is running through your engine to cool it? It is carrying those same stray electrical charges into the innards of your engine. So, manufacturers insert “pencil” zincs into the engine where water runs through it to sacrifice themselves for the greater good – except you can’t see them like those zincs on your transom or prop shaft. So, look for them – and they are easy to find. They usually have a red or green colored hexhead bolt that screw into the engine. All you need to do is unscrew it and, if half or more of its pencil thickness is gone, get a new one in there. They are very inexpensive so you can warehouse some aboard.

Black Gold, Texas Tea - Oil

If your engine doesn’t overheat

due to blocked raw water intakes, low or degraded oil will be the next culprit. Change it, and the filters, regularly. You should speak to your dock master or local surveyor about sending the old oil out for testing at least every 24-36 months. If the testers find metal shavings in the oil, the engine is wearing itself away and you need to address that. If you have more than one engine, change all the oil and all the filters at the same time. And be sure that you run the engine(s) for a goodly period of time prior to changing the oil so you get it all. It will flow like water if you heat it up. It will flow like molasses if you don’t. And write the date of the oil change with a “Sharpie” right on the filter(s.)

Seacocks

A prudent skipper will open and close all seacocks twice a season. If they won’t move, they need to be replaced. They tend to be found in out of the way places, so splash them with some household ammonia. Keeps the mold away.

BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at joinuscgaux@aol. com or go directly to the US Coast Guard Auxiliary “Flotilla Finder” at http://www.cgaux. org/units.php and we will help you “get in this thing...”

ASK MICHELLE

As we become more knowledgeable in the LGBTQIA+ community, it is essential that we become more inclusive. Representation of all people in the community is crucial and the symbol being used to represent the community is evolving. It’s like getting a newer version of a car that you love and have had for a long time, it’s still the same car, just updated.

Since 1977, the traditional pride flag created by Gilbert Baker with its six well known colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet) has been an emblem of the LGBT community. In 2018, Daniel Quasar created the Pride Progress Flag which features brown and black stripes to portray marginalized LGBTQIA+ communities of color, community members lost to HIV/AIDS, and those currently living with AIDS. It also includes baby blue, baby pink, and white to incorporate the transgender flag.

Although there are multiple flags for different identities and sexual orientations, the progress flag is meant to be a representation of everyone as a whole in the community.

It’s Not Just a Flag

transgender people. As they face many struggles in society, the Progress flag validates that they are an integral part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

The flag is also a reminder to transgender individuals and people of color that their place in the community is important. They are constantly under attack from inside and outside of the

community and they are among the most vulnerable individuals in the country. Black transgender and gender non-conforming people face some of the highest levels of discrimination of all

Many people have said that the progress flag is doing the opposite of what it intended. The original pride flag was meant to represent everyone in the community together, but some people feel that by putting the trans, black, and brown stripes on top, that they are actually excluding them. People that are uneducated about what the flag's stripes mean think that it is political or representing something other than the LGBTQIA+ community, mostly because it has brought race into the stripes. Regardless of the critiques some have towards the flag, it stands for unity, love, and a symbol of how far we have come, so it deserves to be waved high and with pride.

Marie Monti - “Medford Landings Mayor”

7, 1936 – November 25, 2022

I’d like to celebrate and remember the long, beautiful life of Medford Landings affectionately titled "Mayor" Marie Monti. Born April 7th, 1936 - November 25, 2022.

Marie was a “Firecracker” of a women described by family and friends as full of personality, smiles, and wit. A Social Butterfly or Dragonfly depending on the day. She was so smart, and nobody could do sarcasm with a smile like Marie. She was never seen without her blush on and enjoyed having her hair done. As a young woman she was proud to be a line worker and earned a living with Whitman packaging making makeup bundles. She loved long strolls outside in her apartment complex looking at the flowers in the garden and regularly checked in on her neighbors when she wasn't busy cooking for herself and family. She was a collector of jewelry, porcelain dolls and various knickknacks. Marie enjoyed music and dancing at family parties as well as watching dancing shows on TV. What she loved more than anything was

quality time with her children, grandkids and great-grandkids. She would play dominoes or board games with them or watch them draw with chalk on the sidewalk. I will never forget her laugh; it was infectious.

She is survived by her four children. Her youngest she called her "Baby" Angel Corelli who has been her full-time caregiver in her senior years and devoted all her time and her whole heart into making her mother’s life a full, active and vibrant one. Angel knew her mom cherished her independence and freedom which she honored, and it reflected in the way Angel cared for her mother. Angel was by Marie's side round the clock, even choosing to live with her 24hrs a day for the last

2 weeks of her life in hospice care, so she was never alone. Their bond was exceptional and one that most mothers and daughters could only hope to have. Marie is also survived by her three other daughters who share their mother’s beauty, stubborn nature, and resilient strength. Their love for her will live on eternally. [EldestYoungest Linda Monti-Wagner, Diane Mazzerelli and Christine Monti]. As well as Predeceased by her son [Michael Monti Sr.]

She took so much pride in the way her 10 Adult grandchildren grew up into capable loving people. [Kevin, Robby, Mark, Richard, Jessica, Tiffany, Michael, *Christa, Angela, Alyssa.] She would carry their pictures in her wallet to show

He truly loved Marie like a 2nd mom and will miss her deeply. Marie was warm and welcoming and built relationships with the spouses and close friends of her grandkids that came to visit her and cared for her at events. She became so close to them she considered them her bonus grandkids. Nothing brought

more joy to Marie than being a Great Grandma to her 9 Great Grandkids. [Maurisa, Angel, Sophia, Jackson, Bobby, Jovanna, Zachary, Lucas, and Nelly.] Marie loved Scratchers, Italian Dinners, and Frank Sinatra. Her favorite song was “My Way”. One thing is for sure, Marie was fierce and strong and she finished her days out “HER WAY!” surrounded by love and holding her daughter Angel's hand as she passed on to heaven peacefully where she was greeted by all her angels at the Gates of Heaven.

Please read it carefully. SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT You are in danger of losing your home. If you fail to respond to the Summons and Complaint in this foreclosure action, you may lose your home. Please read the Summons and Complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney or your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies, and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-

free helpline maintained by New York State Department of Financial Services’ at 1-877-BANKNYS (1-877-226-5697) or visit the Department’s website at WWW. BANKING.STATE. NY.US. RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO LEAVE YOUR HOME AT THIS TIME. You have the right to stay in your home during the foreclosure process. You are not required to leave your home unless and until your property is sold at auction pursuant to a judgment of foreclosure and sale. Regardless of whether you choose to remain in your home, YOU ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PROPERTY and pay your taxes in accordance with state and local law. FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you

pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services.
