It is anticipated that
incumbents will come away this election cycle with the incumbent being re-elected.
As of press time unofficial results appear to show that Republicans have taken control of the House of Representatives. As of this time, it is too close to call to determine who will control the United States Senate. It appears that Republicans have seized all four of Long Island’s Congressional seats, numerous state senate and assembly seats and county clerk and comptroller.
After a long and winding campaign trail in his bid to win election to the Governor's seat that took him criss-crossing into virtually every corner of New York State, Republican Congressman Lee Zeldin returned to his home town on Election Day to cast his ballot. Joined by his wife and 15 year old twin daughters, Zeldin was met by a throng of media at the Mastic Beach Fire House, where he greeted election
workers. As he emerged from casting his ballot to entertain questions from the press, Zeldin exuded confidence his message resonated with voters and he would be victorious over his Democrat opponent, Kathy Hochul. Zeldin cautioned he would need 30% of the New York City vote and to do well on Long Island if he were to win. ". . . We will win as long as the voters get to the polls," Zeldin said.
Saying this election was not about party politics, but rather,
New Yorkers coming together, Zeldin said he was looking forward to building relationships and strengthening existing ones. Zeldin said the first phone call he was planning to make was to New York City Mayor Eric Adam's to ask what he needs to make New York City a better and safer place to live. Zeldin said laws need to be overhauled in New York City.
Meanwhile, in the homestretch on the Democrat side of the aisle, the Hochul team tapped into the heaviest weights in Washington to join the party to stump for Hochul. The incumbent fought to retain the seat she inherited after a disgraced Andrew Cuomo stepped down amid a litany of alleged scandals. Stepping onto the campaign trail in predominantly blue New York City at the eleventh hour in hopes of bolstering support for Hochul amid razor thin polls that were too close for comfort, were President Biden, Vice President Harris, and former Secretary of State Clinton.
When he announced his intent
to run a Gubernatorial challenge, Zeldin launched his campaign in full throttle mode with the tag line, "Let's fire Kathy Hochul." He tied up his campaign slogan with the message, "Vote like your life depends on it..." So county by county, community by community, person by person, Zeldin campaigned tirelessly down to the wire, highlighting hallmarks of his campaign while criticizing Hochul for her approach to crime, cashless bail, the economy and virtually every
issue at the forefront on the minds of New Yorkers.
After voting, Zeldin took time to visit Suffolk County GOP Headquarters where he thanked his energized team of volunteers for their efforts and dedication for working on his campaign. He then headed towards Nassau County, then made stops along the boroughs before landing in Manhattan and the end of a long and aggressively fought campaign for change.
A long-anticipated master plan for the revitalization of the Mastic Beach community was unveiled during a Community Outreach Meeting last week. An estimated 500 residents, merchants, and stakeholders gathered at William Floyd High School to see the curtain rise on the multi-faceted proposal that officials say aims to improve the quality of life for the community at large.
Following a series of meetings between Brookhaven Town officials and community groups with representatives of The Beechwood Organization, the master plan was designed to reflect the desires of local stakeholders. Ultimately, those goals include improving public safety; eliminating blighted properties as identified by a blight study; create infrastructure improvements; creation of a pedestrian-oriented downtown; redevelopment with a diverse mix of uses for residents, visitors and workers; bolstering the local economy; streetscape enhancements; and the creation of public recreational opportunities that connect the community to the waterfront and ocean beaches.
Reaction to the proposed master plan varied as stakeholders weighed in on the proposed design. Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners for the Mastic Beach Fire Department, ex-mayor of Mastic Beach and 52year resident of the community, Bill Biondi, is hopeful the plan will enhance the Neighborhood Road downtown area and outlying areas. "The plan has a lot of good ideas, and anything they do for Mastic Beach is a positive," Biondi said. "Housing and condos are great for Neighborhood Road and the community," Biondi said, adding, "My only question is the cost of living on Long Island. We have a great waterfront, a lot of history, but something's missing
because most businesses are barely surviving."
Traffic patterns are what Biondi asserts is a major issue blocking progress in the quaint waterfront community. "Mastic Beach is probably one of the few communities with no main road leading into it," Biondi said. Kevin Collins, president of the Mastic Beach Property Owners Association and marina operator agrees: "Mastic Beach is a destination community. People are not coming here unless they have a reason to come here," Collins said, noting, "Our major road here is Montauk Highway, and that highway passes through every village and community except Mastic Beach. What we need," Collins continued, "are more attractions and more residents that will bolster commerce." From a safety vantage point and referencing blighted parcels that dot the community, Collins says "the more people we have, the safer Main Street will be."
A concern Biondi reflected is the lack of communication between Beechwood Organization representatives and fire and emergency services officials. "There are some great ideas, but I'm just hoping when and if they're going to sit down with the fire department and EMS to go over designs, because the proposal has three and four story buildings with underground utilities and parking," Biondi explained, "so they need to sit down with the fire department and EMS so we can make adequate plans for equipment we will need for emergencies. As a former mayor," Biondi continued, "I'm trying to do what's best for the community." Biondi also raised the issue on the need for sewers: "The community would love to see a nice restaurant come in to the community but we need sewers and they're a long way out."
Collins, meanwhile, said he's "in agreement" with the proposed master plan, noting, "For years and years we have paid zillions of dollars on study, after study, after study, and now action is being taken," Collins said. Acknowledging some store owners "won't be happy," Collins pointed out he believes Beechwood Organization principals will be "extremely fair" in reimbursing for eminent domain proceedings, based upon what he said he heard from last week's public presentation.
Collins said he believes the master plan will have a "positive impact" on the Mastic Beach Property Owners Association, which he says is the largest economic draw to Mastic Beach, and the two marinas (Marina 1 and Violets Cove, also known as Section 5 Marina).
But Greater Mastic Beach Chamber of Commerce president, Ava Torres (owner of Linsa Torres), remains pessimistic to how the plan is being rolled out. "Many of the business owners and I don't have a problem with revitalization - I have a problem with being inclusive in the decision making. As a Chamber," Torres continued, "we were overlooked because the
information they (Beechwood Organization) obtained was largely from civic groups."
"We want to see progress, beautification and our community be the best it can be, but, Torres asked, "Where are in this equation?" She added: Those who have a financial stake within that corridor received the least information than anyone else."
The next step in the process, according to Steven Dubb, a principal of The Beechwood Organization, is "to work with
the Town (of Brookhaven officials), to create an appropriate zoning district to allow for this development project which will then undergo environmental and public review." Dubb estimates an 18 month timeframe for this step in the process.
Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, and Sixth District Councilman and Deputy Supervisor Dan Panico did not return numerous calls for comment on the proposed master plan.

On Friday, October 28th, Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa rolled up his sleeves and teamed up with the orange army from The Home Depot for a much needed rejuvenation of the Farmingville-Holtsville Veterans Memorial Park located at Leeds Blvd. and County Road 16 (Portion Rd.) in Farmingville.
“Today was truly an honor to be able to come together with such an amazing group of men and women to honor those who
sacrificed their lives for our great nation,” said Legislator Caracappa. “Families will now be able to come to this park to reflect and remember their service or pay tribute to those brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.”
Those that attended are as follows, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Director of the Suffolk County Veterans Agency Tom Ronayne, Executive Director
of the Farmingville Residents Association Marisa Pizza, President of the Farmingville Historical Society BJ Intini, President of the Farmingville Hills Chamber of Commerce Michael Wentz and Commander of the VFW Post 400 Frank Sanzone. From the Selden Home Depot, District Manager Dawn Vanterpool, Store Manager Denise Luck, Home Depot Team Captain Chris Raimondi and Team Home Depot District Manager Chris Holden.
Some of the improvements included mulch, top soil, plantings, lighting, landscape edging, and a flagpole replacement of a pole that has been missing for nine years. The Home Depot donated all of the supplies. Breakfast was donated by Cella Bagels and lunch was donated by Café Amici. This event truly encompassed how many different levels of community can come together to instill that history will never be forgotten.

Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Daniel Losquadro is hosting two free, upcoming child safety seat checks.
The first event will be held Saturday, Dec. 3, 2022, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Safety Town, 249 Buckley Road in Holtsville; the second will be Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Miller Place Fire Department, 220 Miller PlaceYaphank Road in Miller Place.
The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, along with certified technicians from the Brookhaven Highway Department, will be on hand to inspect car seats and make sure children are riding in the right car seats for their age and size as they grow.
“In passenger cars, child safety seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers,” said Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro. “Many
parents and caregivers believe they know how to use the correct child restraints for their children, but these restraints are frequently used incorrectly.
I am proud to provide these free car seat inspections to teach parents and caregivers how to identify, choose and correctly install the right car seat for
their child’s age and size.”
The Child Safety Seat Check is funded, in part, by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration with a grant from the New York State Governor's Traffic Safety Committee. Inspections are by appointment only; call 631-4515335 to reserve your spot.
On October 28, Supervisor Ed Romaine (left) joined in on the fun during the Town of Brookhaven’s annual “Halloween Dance” held at the Rose Caracappa Senior Center in Mount Sinai. The event, which was enjoyed by nearly 100 costume-wearing revelers, was sponsored by the Town’s Division of Senior Citizen Services who provided all the refreshments while the guests enjoyed music by DJ Louis Del Prete.
Supervisor Romaine said, “It
was great to see all the guests who got into the Halloween spirit with their costumes. Thanks to everyone who attended and to our Division of Senior Citizen Services staff who do so much throughout the year for the seniors of Brookhaven Town.”

Most of us have gotten adjusted, are used to, the way traffic moves on Long Island and the rest of the New York Metropolitan Area. But once I had an experience which clearly exposed how frenzied, how often danger-filled, it can be. We had stayed too long on a vacation and it was Saturday in New Mexico and we all had to return Monday. So, the plan was to drive through the day and then night to get back.
I couldn’t do it now, but a younger me had the energy to drive through New Mexico, into Texas, across Oklahoma, up to Arkansas and as the sun set and darkness came, into the Midwest, finally crossing into New Jersey, the New York City skyline appearing as sunrise arrived, and then on to Long Island.
With the traffic flow in the west still fresh in my mind, crossing the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and encountering New York and then Nassau and Suffolk County traffic, it was so apparent how many a driver in this part of the United States can be highly aggressive.
I was thinking about this experience recently reading an article in Newsday about fatal auto accidents on Long Island.
Its headline: “Deadliest roads on Long Island: Route 25 and 27 had
most crash fatalities over five-year span, analysis finds.” The article said “a Newsday analysis of federal data…identified the five deadliest thoroughfares” on Long Island between 2016 and 2020. State Routes 25, also “known as Jericho Turnpike and Middle Country Road, had 62 deaths, trailed closely behind by Route 27, also called Sunrise and Montauk highways, with 61 traffic facilities, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data.” Those roads were followed by State Route 25A, Suffolk County Route 80 and State Route 24.
And the analysis didn’t consider the Long Island Expressway—a kind of Main Street for Long Island— which for more than four decades I’ve driven on several times a week from our home in Noyac after receiving a position as a journalism professor at SUNY Old Westbury.
That LIE drive is among some drivers with the mistaken idea that the LIE is the Indianapolis Speedway.
I am routinely passed (and I’m not a pokey driver) by cars wildly weaving through lanes of traffic at high speed. There are police cars along the LIE and they stop some of the speed-racer weavers. But there
are still many left driving recklessly, dangerously. And then there are the tailgaters.
Most LIE drivers motor sensibly and courteously, but far from all. When I get near SUNY Old Westbury and need to move right to get off at the Route 106/107 exit, most drivers are considerate and let me change into the lane they’re in, but not all.
As to traffic deaths, I inputted these words last week into Google: “Fatal Auto Accidents Long Island Expressway.” Displayed were a cavalcade of items with headings starting: “Long Island Expressway Deadly Crash—NBC New York;” “Update: Woman Seriously Injured in LIE Crash in Yaphank;” “89-yearold driver killed in fiery crash on
Long Island” (in Melville), “Long Island Expressway crash leaves man, 39, dead—PIX 11,” and so on.
Regarding Route 27, when it gets out to around Westhampton and the East End, some drivers hit the gas and take off, like in airplanes. Then, Route 27 at Shinnecock Hills also becomes County Road 39. Years ago, when Suffolk County government officials figured a way to expand that often traffic-clogged road to four relatively narrow lanes, they set the speed limit at 35 miles per hour. This is posted on signs all along County Road 39, and painted on the highway itself, and is completely ignored. Accidents on County Road 39 are common.
The Newsday piece on Long Island traffic fatalities has a subhead:
“Experts blame speed.” Under it was the explanation: “Perilous conditions can occur when the thoroughfares cut through shopping areas and intersections where cyclists, pedestrians and cars converge.”
Indeed, we live on Noyac Road in Noyac. When we first moved to Noyac nearly 50 years ago, we figured it would be a wonderful road for bicycling. However, for long stretches, the shoulders of Noyac Road on which cycling might be done are but a few inches in width. It can be cycling suicide. So, we forgot about using our bicycles on Noyac Road, now busier than ever with cars and trucks, many moving at high speed.
On Long Island, beyond the behavior of a lot of drivers, there is the additional complication of how it is car-dependent, thanks largely to public works czar and roadbuilder (including the LIE) Robert Moses who never drove a car but worshipped the auto. Thus, transportation forms are very limited. European countries such as Holland have a wide array of transit options—trams, safe bicycle routes, trolleys, a profusion of local and long-distance trains, a wide variety of bus routes and even, yes, set-aside walking paths. That’s all so needed here.
There is a natural tendency to shy away from the unfamiliar, especially when you can’t get the words back. Remember the first time you were faced with a phone message machine: “leave your answer after the beep” –BEEP! Now what? Even today, that beep can strike fear into the hearts of some. Now, how about multiplying that a hundred-fold to everyone tuned to channel 16…?
Unless you know the cell phone number of every boater in your vicinity, your only source of help is your radio. You don’t have one, you say? Stop reading and check yourself in someplace because that is simply nutty. Your radio is likely to be your only source of help and you go to sea without one? Over a couple of hundred dollars? And Westmarine for one will give you a three-year warranty in the price… Come on, Bunky, where else can we skimp with such potentially disastrous results?
So, let’s assume we all have a radio, even if only a 5watt handheld, aboard. Calls fall into three categories and if you use the introduction properly, you will save essential time with US Coast
The all-familiar “May-day, Mayday, May-day” is the ultimate. It means that “I need help right now. There is imminent risk to lives aboard my vessel.” (Emanating from the sinking of the Titanic, it comes from the French for “help me!” “M’aide”.) Would you use it if there wasn’t imminent threat to lives? No. What then do I use?
“Pan-pan, pan-pan, pan-pan” (said “pahn”) is the introduction to indicate that a high level of
concern exists and advice, at a minimum, is needed. You’re taking on water but you have it generally under control - but you wisely want the USCG to keep an eye on you… Or you are coming in during a heavy storm, are struggling but maintaining steerage - but want the USCG to keep an eye on you… Don’t be bashful. Get on that radio and have someone watch over you…
“Security-security-security” (often said with the French pronunciation – “secure-a-tay”). You are coming into the Inlet at night, can’t see anybody but worried, as you should be, that
there is somebody there… You’re coming back from Montauk during a foggy day and you are on the rhumb line from the Montauk sea buoy towards the Moriches sea buoy. Someone going from Moriches to Montauk will be on a reciprocal course to yours – in the fog. Put out the security call!
All of these introductions, which immediately establish the level of the issue, are repeated three times, per above.
What you say next will save time and possibly save your life. Identify yourself (the name of the boat – if you don’t have one, make something up right then “motor vessel ‘charlie’”) and, most importantly, the nature of your distress and where you are! For example, “pahn-pahn, pahn-pahn, pahn-pahn, this is the motor-vessel Charlie. We are taking on water and are 10 miles due south of Moriches Inlet. Bailing has it under control at this time. Over.” When the USCG hears that, they will come right back to you (if they don’t within, say, a minute, hail them again.) Note that I finished my hail with the word “over.” This means I am finished talking and hoping to
hear back. (There is no such signoff, despite the movies, as “over and out.” “Out” means I am done talking and I don’t want to talk to you any more. “Over” means I am done talking and I do want to talk to you some more. Which is it, bunky??”)
The rest will be pretty straight forward for the private boat captain. USCG Forces will essentially take over the conversational and situational control at that point. They will gather essential information (how many people aboard?) and direct you to take action consistent with the risk of the situation (get everyone in life jackets.) They will also put out an urgent call to all boaters in your vicinity to render assistance if they can, as Good Samaritans. And, if the risk warrants it, they will get under way within minutes of your hail.
BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at joinuscgaux@aol.com or go directly to the US Coast Guard Auxiliary “Flotilla Finder” at http://www.cgaux.org/units.php and we will help you “get in this thing...”
Get a radio – and sound safe and smart out there!
Last season's college basketball season was filled with excitement and energy that may never be matched again. From the championship game comeback to the great St. Peter's underdog run and everything in between, led to one of the most memorable seasons in memory. What is great about sports though, is that this season could match that energy as we all have a great anticipation for the upcoming season.
Unlike most other sports, the college basketball landscape extends beyond the power 5 conferences and this year will be no different. We don't need any more evidence than looking right at the odds on favorites Gonzaga Bulldogs, who sit at just 9 to 1 odds to cut down the nets this March. Blue bloods soon follow with North Carolina coming in at 10 to 1 and Kentucky at 11 to 1. Houston then shows the basketball world you don't need to come from a power conference to
be a legit contender as they sit at 12 to 1 odds to win it all, followed by SEC stallworth's Arkansas and Tennessee, a Duke team without Coach K and the defending champions Jayhawks are all at 14 to 1, and in a good position to cash tickets for sports bettors.
Some surprising risers this season include Creighton, who comes in at 25 to 1, and the favorites to win the Big East. Meanwhile hopes are high in Austin as the Longhorns also have 25 to 1 odds and the Wolverines feel like they are the best team in a weak conference, if you agree then 35 to 1 odds might be enticing.
The Final Four is months away and so much can happen between now and then, but for now we see the college basketball landscape changing direction and for the non power teams, that is a good thing.

In New York State, a child is not legally entitled to an inheritance. A parent can disinherit a child and that child has no legal right to assets in the estate. The only relative who cannot be disinherited is a surviving spouse. Under New York’s Estates, Powers and Trusts Law (EPT § 5-1.1-A) the surviving spouse has the right to an “elective share” of their decedent-spouse’s estate. The elective share for a spouse is the higher of $50,000 or one-third of the estate.
However, even though a parent can disinherit a child in a Will, that does not mean that the disinherited child has no recourse. When a person dies with a Will, the nominated executor must file a probate petition with the Surrogate’s Court. The law also requires that every person with an interest in the estate receive a copy of the Will. A child of the deceased is always an interested party because they would automatically inherit if there had been no Will. The interested party must either sign a Waiver and Consent or be issued a citation to appear in court. If they refuse to sign a Waiver and Consent, a court date will be set
where the disinherited child will have the opportunity to contest the Will.
Thus, a disinherited child gets a copy of the Will and the opportunity to object. They could contest the Will alleging fraud, undue influence, duress, or that the decedent lacked the requisite mental capacity. If they can get the Will thrown out, they can then inherit. This is because the law of intestacy is very strict. If an unmarried person dies without a Will ("intestate") with children, the children split the estate equally. Even if the disinherited child has no basis to contest a Will, they can force a settlement by delaying the case. Sometimes it is more cost effective to settle than litigate.
There are steps one can take when disinheriting a child to avoid unnecessary expense, delay, and possible litigation. One way to avoid a costly and time-consuming Will contest is to put assets in a trust. Any assets held in a trust avoid the probate process so notice and consent by the disinherited child is not required. At the trust creator's death, the trustee simply follows the terms of the trust when distributing the assets to
At a public meeting of the Mastic Beach/Shirley community held at William Floyd High School on November 3rd chaired by Deputy Town Supervisor Dan Panico, nearly 300 residents turned out to hear a vision put forward by Steven and Michael Dubb of the Beechwood Homes.
Beechwood Homes aims to make Neighborhood Road a Main Street which residents can be proud of. The thrust of the endeavor is to recapture and restore some of the great livability of the past Mastic Beach and its historical culture. Rental properties would be limited to Federal regulations requiring 10% of new construction; 5% for workforce housing, and 5% for lower income housing. Because the formula of 80% of the median LI income is used, the cost of these ‘for sale’ houses would be between $220,000 and $280,000. Beechwood is not in
the rental business.
Being considered are Town Houses and Condos with parking below 2-3 story
beneficiaries. The disinherited child would not to be involved nor entitled to a copy of the trust.
Alternatively, assets that are
jointly
with beneficiaries are retirement accounts and life insurance. Such assets instead pass directly to the joint owner or beneficiary at death. The disinherited child's consent would not be required.

Disinheriting a child can create problems down the road should the disinherited child challenge the Will. If you plan on disinheriting a child you should consult an experienced trusts and estates attorney. Doing so ensures your estate passes on to your chosen beneficiaries as seamlessly and drama-free as possible.

The name PTSD, was created in 1980 as a new diagnosis. Although many mental health professionals are licensed to give a diagnosis to a client or patient, only the American Psychiatric Association creates official diagnosis through its publication,
the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM).
The “D” in PTSD, the word “Disorder,” discourages veterans and those still in the military to seek care and help.
Angels were created pure spirit with no physical form. Saints are those who have lived a mortal virtuous life, died, and gone to their eternal reward. Saints have lived their mortal lives, survived the temptations of the world, the flesh, and the devil, and lived a righteous life in compliance with God’s Holy Will.
One of the most called up saints, Jude Thaddeus is the patron of Lost Causes. St. Jude was one of the twelve Apostles and is traditionally considered a brother of James and Simon and a cousin of Jesus.
St. Jude was one of the first to preach the Good News. St. Eusebius wrote that he was one of the “seventy-two” who Jesus sent out in pairs to evangelize the countryside. It is probably because of this prior contact experience that he was the first of the Apostles sent into the field after Jesus left the group and ascended into heaven. To honor his great missionary work, he is always depicted with the flame of the Holy Spirit above his head.
St. Jude is always shown carrying an image of Jesus in his hand. This classic story tells of Jude’s curing the King of Edessa of leprosy. Jude sent word to Jesus to come cure the king. Jesus promised to send one of His apostles and pressed His image on a piece of cloth. He gave the cloth to Jude to bring it to the king. The king was cured immediately and the entire kingdom of Edessa was converted to Christianity.
Jude zoomed throughout the region and eventually carried his missionary work into Armenia where he remained for several years. There he built a network of goodwill which evolved into the Armenian Church. In the year 66, a believer named Simon arrived from Britain and joined Jude creating a dynamic duo of missionaries. They moved into Persia which is current day Iran and which at that time was violently anti-Christian and the most powerful country on the planet. The Persians practiced an animalistic, pagan religion facilitated by witch- doctors. In Persia Jude and Simon converted
many people through preaching, miracles, and exorcisms. The witchdoctors became infuriated and unleashed a bloodthirsty mob upon the duo, who by now were in their senior years. It is said that as the mob of thugs approached, Jude calmly turned to his sidekick and said, “I see the Lord is calling us.”
The bloodthirsty crowd pelted Jude and Simon with stones, ravaged them with spears, and smashed them with clubs. Simon’s body was sawed into pieces and scattered for the carrion. Jude’s remains eventually wound up in Rome and are buried in St. Peter’s Basilica. The feast of St. Jude is celebrated on October 28th. He is the go-to saint for those of us who have abandoned all hope.
St. Jude, model of humility, mirror of patience, lily of chastity, flame of Divine Love, comfort of the sorrowing, refuge of sinners, helper of the distressed, special patron in hopeless cases, intercede for us and make us worthy of the promises of Christ.
