STATE Friends and Neighbors Rally for Hometown Hero Lee Zeldin in his Run for Governor

Saturday was the homecoming for the William Floyd Colonials and friends and neighbors took the opportunity to rally for another local hero, Congressman Lee Zeldin who is in a tight race for the state’s highest elected office.

“The stakes couldn’t be higher as the Bay Area is suffering under a crime wave, crippling inflation and high taxes brought to us by Gov. Kathy Hochul and her Democrat colleagues,” said Bill Doyle, president of the Southeast Republican Club who helped organize the Mastic Beach rally.

“Our own Lee Zeldin, a graduate of William Floyd, veteran, congressman and former state senator has stepped up to the

plate to save New York.”

An underdog thanks to the overwhelming amount of Democrats in New York City whose Progressive Liberal policies run counter to the interests of Long Island, Zeldin has closed the gap in recent weeks and voters across New York are hoping for his defeat over Hochul whose brief administration has been mired in scandal since she inherited the job from Democrat Andrew Cuomo who was also forced from office by scandal.

“Lee Zeldin will stop the crime wave and say no to the tax-and-spend policies of the Democrats who put us in this mess,” said Aileen Markowski of Mastic Beach at the rally. “It’s

not every day that your neighbor is running for governor. For the sake of New York, we have to get him elected.”

Running alongside Zeldin on the Republican-Conservative ticket are Congressman Andrew Garbarino, Assemblyman Joe DeStefano, former assemblyman and senate candidate Dean Murray, and Suffolk Comptroller John Kennedy. Running statewide are attorney general candidate Michael Henry, Paul Rodriguez for comptroller and Joe Pinion for U. S. senate.

“Voters have a once-in-alifetime opportunity to end the one party rule that has been so destructive to our state, especially Long Island,” said

Election 2022: A Time for Change

Election Day comes to New York as residents face an unprecedented array of challenges, many of which were caused by the policies of their elected leaders. From run-away inflation and record government spending and taxes to rampant crime and a deadly drug epidemic, we are much worse off than just two years ago.

Fortunately, we have the ability to change the direction of our government at the ballot box and I urge everyone to make your voices heard.

INFLATION: We are at a point where many have to decide between buying food or putting gas in their car. Prices are outrageous and the culprit is the massive spending sprees by the Democrats who control Washington and Albany. The Progressive war on energy was a severe blow to our economy and their pushing the Green New Deal at the expense of rational economic policies is why everything costs so much.

CRIME: The Democrats went to war against the police and set the stage for the crimewave. They ushered in cashless bail, threw open the doors of the jails and let criminals go on a rampage. Their defund the police agenda and antilaw enforcement rhetoric resulted in a meteoric spike in murders, shootings, gang attacks, robberies, car jackings, and assaults. The Long Island crimewave gained national attention from a shooting in the front of Congressman Lee Zeldin’s home in Shirley. He’s running for the state’s highest office and thankfully has pledged to reverse the pro-criminal policies of his opponent, Gov. Kathy Hochul.

FENTANYL: This deadly

drug is wreaking havoc on our communities and our kids are being hit the hardest. Originating in China, Fentanyl and other illicit drugs are flowing through the Mexico border unchecked and the Democrats refuse to do anything about it. They are pretending it’s not a problem so they can get through the election, but everyone knows who’s responsible and I hope they take their outrage to the polls.

SCANDAL: The one-party system has brought us politicians that feel unrestrained in spending our money and lining their own pockets. New Yorkers pay the highest taxes and fees in the nation and our economic climate is among the worst. Gov. Hochul, who inherited the job from the scandalous Andrew Cuomo, just couldn’t help herself. She pushed through more than a billion in taxpayer dollars for a new Buffalo Bills stadium and we come to find that her husband will profit handsomely from the deal. Then, in rewarding a major campaign contributor, approved a $637 million contract for COVID test kits at a no-bid price far beyond the market rate. Even her lieutenant governor had to quit after being busted on corruption

charges.

DERELICTION OF DUTY: State Attorney General Letitia James ran on one issue: Get Donald Trump. Pursuing this vendetta, she sits idly by while the crime rate skyrockets and illegal immigrants are flown into our state in the middle of the night. Her Democrat colleague, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has pledged not to prosecute most crimes and the city has become unsafe. They consider New York a sanctuary state and then had the audacity to complain when the governors of other states arranged to bus migrants here. Their hypocrisy was further exposed when the open-door Democrats quickly rounded up the migrants who arrived in their special Martha’s Vineyard enclave.

THE ALTERNATIVE: Voters have had enough and Lee Zeldin and his running mates are rising in the polls. They have put everything on the line to stand up against an entrenched monopoly that is leading us to ruin. It’s a clear choice on November 8: More of the same or a complete change of direction by leaders who have our interests at heart.

It’s Time to Get Your Real ID!

Starting May 3, 2023, the federal government is requiring an Enhanced or REAL ID to board a domestic flight within the United States, or to enter certain federal buildings or military bases. United States passports or other federally accepted forms of ID will still be accepted but if you plan to use your license, now is the best time to upgrade and avoid the last minute rush.

In 2005, Congress passed the REAL ID Act, which established minimum security standards for state-issued driver licenses, permits and ID cards. It also prohibits federal agencies, such as the Transportation Security Administration from accepting cards for official purposes from states that do not meet these standards. New York State began issuing REAL IDs in October of 2017, but you will now be required to obtain one.

In order to receive a REAL ID, you must go to your DMV office, as you will not be able to get one online, by phone, or through mail. Proof of identity (license, birth certificate or passport), proof of social security number or social security eligibility, proof of date of birth, proof of U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residency or temporary lawful status, and two different proofs of NY State residence (i.e. utility bill, bank statement). You will also be required to take a new photo.

There is no additional cost to get a REAL ID, but all normal transaction fees still apply, meaning everyone will have to pay roughly $70 for their new ID, the same as a driver’s license renewal.

Just recently, legislation has been introduced that would waive all transaction fees for people to obtain a REAL ID. This legislation will remove the cost that people are being forced to pay, to essentially replace their current driver’s license they already paid for. I will be monitoring that bill and let you know if there is sufficient support for it to become law.

With May right around the corner, now is the best time to get your REAL ID and avoid the rush if you plan to board a domestic flight. For more information on obtaining a REAL ID, visit the DMV website at https://dmv.ny.gov/ driver-license/federal-real-id.

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker Publishes Book on the Environment

When Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker published a children's book on the environment this summer, the subject matter came as no surprise to many familiar with her record. For decades, even before her election to public office, Anker has been a champion of protecting Long Island's water, ground surfaces and air quality. Her first book into what is going to evolve into a series is entitled "Below the Ocean," and as the title suggests, the theme revolves around teaching children and adults the importance of protecting our oceans and shorelines.

In a conversation with Anker last weekend, she shared her inspiration behind creating a children's educational book. "The inspiration came from the idea that more needs to be done to educate our kids about water and ocean pollution," Anker explained. "Our oceans and waters are a valuable, precious resource, and we as a society, probably don't do enough to protect them from the garbage, plastics and other pollutants that are being dumped directly into our oceans."

The storyline evolves around Sophia the Baby Seal who gets

caught up in the string of a helium balloon that had been released into the air. Sophia goes to her teacher, Daniel the Dolphin, who helps untangle her and teaches Sophia about ocean pollution. Together, they learn about recycling ocean garbage from Olivia the Octopus. What also draws children into the story are the pages of pictures illustrated by artist, Lily Liu. "I gave her artist freedom and she did an amazing job," Anker said.

Anker worked with Amazon and IngramSpark to publish and promote her publication. Anker wanted the book's dimensions to measure 8.5 x 11 inches. Amazon changed the size to 8.5 x 8.5 inches. To publish a hardcover version in Anker's desired parameters, she turned to ImgramSpark. The book is available online at Amazon and also at Barnes and Noble.

Citing statistics on the serious nature of ocean preservation, Anker explained that over the course of 70 years or more, the volume of plastic waste that has filtered into our waterways and landfills has topped the 9-billion ton weight. "Plastic bottles, straws, bags and styrofoam waste continue to pollute our precious natural resources and landfills," Anker noted. Add to that another

hundreds of thousands of pounds of 'ghost gear' equipment, the likes of lobster cages and fishing poles that have been abandoned by fishermen of the industry, and you have the perfect storm for pollutants increasingly clogging and polluting underwater surfaces. "There are ways to help keep oceans clean and seafronts safe," Anker said. "When I'm walking, sometimes I'll wear gloves and

pick up plastics and garbage on the shoreline so they're not swept away by the tide."

From a geological standpoint, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, (NOAA), recognizes there is only one ocean that covers 71 percent of Earth's surface. The ocean is divided into four named oceans regionallythe Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and

Arctic oceans, with a fifth known as the Southern Antarctica. Increasingly concentrated volumes of plastics and other debris are found to be clogging gyres-which are the large systems of rotating ocean currents that are driven by wind, tides, temperatures and salinity. It is Anker's hope that educating children will help preserve the overall integrity of the environment.

Anker takes her book to local libraries and schools to read to children, and educate them on the importance of respecting Mother Earth's environment. She is working with Barnes and Noble to schedule a book reading and signing at the Lake Grove location in the near future. "I always donate a book for the library collection where I read to children," Anker said. Proud of her work, Anker pointed out that she will be writing more books as sequels in the series. Next on the docket, however, is an effort to publish her daughter, Erica's book. "When Erica was five years old she wrote a book that was entered into a contest about Brookhaven Town's Curby Cans, and she won the contest," Anker said. The book which Anker will publish on her daughter's behalf will include illustrations.

Students Experience “A Day in the Life” Science Programs

William Floyd High School and Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School students recently participated in the annual “A Day in the Life” program focused on conducting scientific research of the Carmans River and the Great South Bay via the Smith Point Marina. This fun and hands-on scientific exploration encouraged students to explore and collect data about each estuary and learn how they fit into the area’s larger ecosystems.

WFHS Students Explore Great South Bay Via Boat

A team of ninth-grade honors earth science students from Dawna Cintron’s classes cruised the Great South Bay via boat with representatives from the South Shore Estuary Reserve Program and the Department of Environmental Protection, to test the quality of the bay’s water. Students who were stationed on land used seining nets and lab equipment to investigate aquatic life, biodiversity and water chemistry. This year, students worked alongside Dr. Aleida Perez, supervisor for student research and citizen science at Brookhaven National Laboratory, to gather and test chemical content of microplastic particles along the coastal region.

Nathaniel Woodhull Fourth Graders Conduct Research at Wertheim

Simultaneously, Nathaniel Woodhull Elementary School fourth-grade students from Mr. Murphy’s, Mrs. Cook’s, Mrs. Stern’s, Ms. Schiralli’s and Ms. Nocella’s classes had a great time examining aquatic life collected with seining nets in the Carmans River along with a host of other educational opportunities in one of our community’s treasured resources, the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge.

A Day at Osprey Park for WFHS Science Students

Additionally, William Floyd High School marine and

environmental science students under the guidance of Dr. Luisa McHugh, science chairperson, recently traveled to Osprey Park in Mastic Beach to study the biodiversity of organisms that exist in the bay and why it is critical to protect our community’s waterways. As part of the activities, students waded into the bay to collect and examine creatures while another station was focused on water quality testing and how students can get involved in clearing harmful contaminants from local waterways.

Collected data was recorded and placed into a database for comparison over the past several years. With this information,

33 Bellport High School Students Inducted into Center for Excellence

During a ceremony on Sept. 29, 33 Bellport High School students were officially inducted into the school’s Center for Excellence Club.

Run by advisers Nicole Colao and Colleen Oates-Robesch, the Center for Excellence provides support and experiences for students who are on the path to college but do not have someone in their home lives with experience on that path. Club activities aim to develop a network of support that students can rely on as they work toward their college and career goals. Students are inducted following a spring application and interview process.

Ceremony speakers included Superintendent of Schools Antonio Santana, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Beth Doyle and Board of Education President Cheryl A. Felice, who described the challenges they had faced on their respective higher education

journeys and offered sound advice.

“Always take advantage of other people’s generosity,” said Santana, whose sentiments were shared by Doyle as she urged students to avail themselves of all the support the school and community has to offer. Felice noted, “You are in control of your own destiny, and there is always a way.”

The South Country Central School District extends its congratulations to the following inductees:

Nicole Alvarado, Anahi Avecillas Paz, Mike BolanosBuestan, Gianna Brown,

Christopher Carrillo Hernandez, Christopher Chaves, Daphne Delgado Riera, Erin Dupaya, Leilanie Fernandez Echavarria, Jennifer Fuentes, Jeremy Guaraca Salinas, Aljon Guillermo, Andrea Hernandez Monroy, Aysia Hernandez, Oscar Hernandez, Sha’Niyia Hollman, Sebastian Mangru, Janeiry Marroquin Fuentes, Angel Matute Aguilar, Anthony Molina Salgado, Angelina Negron, Remy Padgett, Adamaris Perez Vazquez, Vincent Pitre Jr., Natalie Ponter, Iesha Rodney, Jeremy Saltos Delgado, Evelyn Soto, Angely Trujillo Martinez, Mia Walker, Reginald Elliot Watkins II, Giovanna Yancy and Amber Ynoa.

students will be able to see how each estuary has changed over time. The William Floyd Science Department will be taking more hands-on field trips in the near future, including a visit to the Forge River later this month for data collection and research.

Special thanks to the Central

Pine Barrens Commission, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Brookhaven National Laboratory for their efforts in bringing the “A Day in the Life” program to so many students and helping them learn the importance of caring for local estuaries and ecosystems.

Loguercio Honors Boy Scout from Medford for His Volunteer Work at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter

On October 11, Councilman Michael Loguercio was at the Brookhaven Town Animal Shelter and Adoption Center where he honored Boy Scout Jason Foerster from Medford for his independent work to earn a “Citizenship in the Community badge” which is required to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. Jason, who is member of Boy Scout Troop 94 in Wading River, was required to visit several organizations that benefit the community and perform eight hours of volunteer service. He asked Linda Klampfl, Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center Supervisor, how he could help. She suggested that he collect donations of blankets, towels, toys, and food for the animals at the shelter. He created a flyer about his drive and posted a video on social media with an appeal for help to friends and family. He also went door-to-door with

the flyers and experienced overwhelming support for his efforts. The drive proved to be very successful, and he was able to present with bags of blankets, towels, bedding, toys, as well as several bags of unopened food and treats for the dogs and cats at the shelter.

Councilman Loguercio said, "Thank you Jason. You are an amazing example for others to follow. I know our animals at the shelter appreciate your kindness and effort, as does everyone here at the town."

The Brookhaven Town Animal Shelter and Adoption Center is located at 300 Horseblock Road in Brookhaven. Hours are Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm; Saturday 10:00 am to 3:30 pm; and Sunday 11:00 am to 3:30 pm. Go to www.BrookhavenNY. gov/AnimalShelter for more information.

SUFFOLK CLOSEUP Political TV Commercials

As the 2022 election season comes to a close, highways in Suffolk County are full of political campaign signs making those sequential Burma-Shave signs of decades ago look minimal. For those who were not around when those placards bedecked the landscape, one of their sequences ran: “Within this vale/of toil/and sin/your head grows bald/but not your chin/use Burma-Shave.”

Put up until the 1960s, what became 7,000 signs are credited with leading Burma-Shave to becoming the second best-selling shaving cream in the U.S. I’d say there are well more than 7,000 political campaign signs just in Suffolk these days. Their main purpose: familiarizing voters with the names of candidates.

Then there are fliers and newspaper ads—material in print which highlight the positions on issues of candidates and their backgrounds.

And then have come political TV commercials, and today these commercials are increasingly running on the internet, too. They aim at striking a different chord: appealing to feelings and emotions. This is done mainly by having candidates seem likeable. The commercials also often feature

negative attacks on opponents of the nominees illustrated with unflattering photos and videos of them.

In New York State, we are flooded this year with many political TV commercials for incumbent Governor Kathy Hochul and Suffolk Congressman Lee Zeldin in their contest for governor. In Suffolk, candidates for Congress are using TV commercials—especially Suffolk Legislator Bridget Fleming and Suffolk Legislature chief-ofstaff Nick LaLota in their race to succeed Zeldin in the lst C.D.

Political TV commercials are expensive. Indeed, paying for them is a big part of the finances of any campaign utilizing them.

The model for the political TV commercial was launched 70 years ago.

It was 1952, and a Madison Avenue advertising man, Rosser Reeves, convinced Dwight Eisenhower to use TV commercials in his run for the presidency. Four years earlier, Reeves tried to interest the prior Republican presidential candidate, Thomas Dewey, in the approach. But Dewey “did not buy the idea of lowering himself to the commercial environment of a toothpaste ad,” relates Robert

The Eisenhower commercials were coordinated with what became the campaign slogan: “I Like Ike.” Reeves had an early understanding that television best communicates feeling and emotion, not information.

Thus, the Eisenhower commercials presented the former five-star general grinning and appearing likeable—getting to voters’ feelings and emotions and making the strongest use of the TV medium.

The Democratic candidate, former Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson, tried to counter the blitz of 15-second Eisenhower spots. He embarked on a series of half-hour lectures on TV. Stevenson tried to, as he reflected, "talk sense to the American people.” As National Public Radio has noted, Stevenson “was an old-fashioned intellectual who believed in long speeches and the power of words…So he bought 30-minute blocks on TV, but nobody tuned in to watch.”

I wrote a thesis as a graduate student in the Media Studies Program at the New School for Social Research titled: “The

Political TV Commercial as a Pivotal Component in American Presidential Politics.” I analyzed every presidential campaign from the Eisenhower-Stevenson races through each presidential contest up until 1980 (as I received my degree in 1981).

The final race I wrote about was the 1980 presidential run of Ronald Reagan. Many voters might have disliked his policies, but a substantial number liked Reagan— based on the image he projected through television. With the ability to perform on TV having become a necessary attribute of a presidential candidate, the Republican Party had chosen an actor to run for president. He had been governor of California but previously, for eight years, Reagan performed on TV as host of “General Electric Theatre.”

So, it has gone—highlighted in recent years by Barack Obama, a master at speaking, smiling and being likeable through television, and, for some, Donald Trump, who earlier, for 14 years, performed on TV as host of “The Apprentice.”

I’ve long wondered how George Washington or Thomas Jefferson or Abraham Lincoln would have fared in presidential races which rely on a candidate’s likeability as transmitted in political TV commercials.

Heavy Weather Skippering

As the temperatures continue to drop, we need to focus now on skippering in heavy weather – because it is coming. This column is about that.

Heavy Weather

Why is heavy weather more dangerous as we move into the Fall? Well, putting hurricanes aside which are in their own class, heavy weather in the colder months has its own set of challenges. First, hypothermia is but a small slip away. Second, as the water chills, it gets denser per cubic foot. Denser means more “oomph” behind those chops. Third, it gets darker sooner. What used to be an all daylight trip out to a favorite fishing spot is now a return under the cover of night. Believe me, once one thing goes wrong, the chances of something else going wrong before you can focus on and fix the first problem just went up. Now you have a spiraling and accelerating danger curve on your hands. So, what to do if caught in heavy weather?

Put Your Life Jackets On –Right away, the skipper has to

direct everyone to don their life jackets. On my vessel, I have a heavy weather/type-1 life jacket on the back of my helm seat. Across the back, where the crew can read it, it says, “If you see the captain put this on, try to find one for yourself.”

Take Waves at an Angle – Those waves that you are trying to muscle through pack tremendous power within them. Did you know that 1 out of every 20 boats that sink at sea does so when the hull comes apart under the force of pounding seas? If that statistic was adjusted for heavy weather sinkings, it would go up dramatically, I’m sure. Cross the waves at a 45-degree angle and “tack” across the storm like a sail boat moving to windward. And slow down! Your 20 knots and 5 knots of wave speed multiply the force of the pounding. Slow down and cut the forces.

Don’t Be Bashful – If things start to get dicey, get on the radio and call the USCG. Tell them where you are, where you are heading and why you are concerned about the situation. Most likely, the watch stander

will take that information and ask you to check in with him or her every 15 minutes. Don’t be late in checking in or you may find a red-and-white helicopter hovering over you. But if you are in trouble, the USCG will know where you were just 15 minutes prior. You started the “rescue starts now” clock the last time you communicated your position.

Any Port in a Storm – OK, you told your spouse you’d be back by 4pm and it is now 6pm and you are struggling against the nor’easter that is keeping you from operating at speed to get in. Don’t bet your life on a

perceived deadline. Your spouse would rather you survive. Head to the nearest harbor you can safely make, even if that means turning and putting the storm on your stern. Arriving safely in New Jersey is better than not arriving at all.

Surf – If you find the sea is going where you are, consider getting on the back of one of those growlers and staying there, all the way home. It takes considerable seamanship and helmsmanship to ride the back of a wave but consider this. If you have an outboard engine with a transom cut-out, your “free board” is only that little

distance between the water line and the lowest part of that cutout. Probably 6”-10”. If you have a following sea and one of those growlers catches up with you, he will swamp you from astern. Stay ahead and he can’t.

Create a Ditch Bag – If things really get dicey, don’t leave the boat until it sinks out from under you. But have a “ditch bag” ready – cell phone, handheld radio, fresh water, dry clothes, medical kit, flash light, flares, etc come immediately to mind.

I spent 5 days at sea in Hurricane Alberta over 40 years ago. I have a healthy respect for the sea and how fast things can go from bad to absolutely awful. Don’t be a statistic. Be the skipper who can say, “I always bring my crew back.”

BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at joinuscgaux@aol. com or go directly to the US Coast Guard Auxiliary “Flotilla Finder” at http://www.cgaux. org/units.php and we will help you “get in this thing .”

Last year talk of the Brooklyn Nets winning the NBA championship was all the rage. They were the odds on favorites around the country, they were talked about on every sports talk show, and they had built this "dream team" that seemed almost unstoppable. Not only did they not win the championship, but the dream team was broken up before the year even ended and it actually seemed like the real Brooklyn Nets never even got started.

This season the expectations are tempered. The Nets are still in the title hunt according to the line makers. They are the 4th lowest odds to win the NBA championship at 7 to 1. They also are only slightly behind the Celtics to win the east, coming in as the second favorite in the conference. But, things feel different this year. There is no talk of a cakewalk season, no calls into radio shows asking if they can beat the single season wins record, and no talking heads in the media comparing them to the greats of

the past. No, this season is all about quiet optimism among Nets fans and the NBA community.

The Nets still have one of this generation's best talents in Kevin Durant. He looked every bit as good as he did in the past when he returned from injury last year averaging 31 points per game. They also have plenty of talent, albeit with questions about Simmons and Irving. Add to that Curry and some extra pieces and you can argue the Nets starting 5 is as talented as just about any in the league. But, those same questions remain that haunted this team last year. What will Simmons and Irving bring to the table, and how much of a distraction will they be?

How much will the coaching hurt this team? And what will they do when Durant isn't on the floor?

The Nets were 8-19 with the 26th ranked net efficiency rating when he wasn't on the floor.

The questions from last season still surround Brooklyn but the

upside is also still there. Maybe, with a year removed from the hype and expectations this is the version

Bad Vibes in Brooklyn?

of the Nets that accomplishes what many believed they could last season, or maybe this is one of the

biggest failed experiments ever in NBA history.

PERCEPTION

As we look at the current polls, it appears Republicans will hold a majority of 30+ seats in the House and a lead of 2 or more in the Senate. To amass this majority in the Senate, in some states the GOP has strong leads, and in some they are “in play.” As is always the case the determinizing factor will be voter turnout.

In Nevada, Adam Lexalt is ahead while in Wisconsin prolife candidate Ron Johnson is surging at the polls. JD Vance leads in his race for a Senate seat in Ohio. Contenders Blake Masters in Arizona, Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania, and General Don Bolduc in New Hampshire are “in play.”

In Arizona Kari Lake is leading in the race for Governor. Mitch McConnell, after withholding funds from The Masters after the Lake GOP primary victory, has joined with billionaire megadonor Peter Thiel to fund The Masters to the tune of $10 million.

Always a potential problem is the unstable, nonmonitorable drop boxes. In Arizona private citizen groups actively working to monitor these boxes are being met with resistance from Democratic machinery with “cease and desist” orders.

In the northeast there has been an intensification of GOP activity in vulnerable Democratic areas. Republican efforts are forcing Democrats to spend large sums of money in expensive New York and New England markets. This is necessitating the Democrats to decide upon which races to abandon and which to support. They will be forced to spend money only on campaigns they think they can win.

A New York Times report on October 11th stated that “a month ahead of election day, New York has emerged from a haywire redistricting cycle as perhaps the most consequential battleground in the country, with Democrats mired in an incredibly costly

fight just to hold their ground.”

The oncoming winter weather will be an asset for Republicans in races in the Northeast. Colder temperatures mean furnaces blasting which means heating bills arriving simultaneously with Election Day. The electorate will be holding Dems feet to the fire as the meter readers do their job.

energy production, something which President Biden had put to a halt by shutting down oil sources and refineries immediately upon assuming the Presidency. Contrast this to Mastriano’s opponent Josh Shapiro where protection of transgender ideology is a core of his campaign.

Again Dr. Oz is doing well against his opponent but with mail in ballots in use vigilance is of prime importance. Without doubt the greatest challenge for Democrats to overcome is the defense of President Biden’s tenuous tenure as Chief Executive.

In Pennsylvania, Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano told reporters that at a Town Hall “Meet & Greet” drawing crowds of 500 plus residents covering Democratic strongholds of Philadelphia and Erie that he was allowed to present his case without interruption from hecklers or protestors.

Mastriano presented a vision for an increase in

On paper everything looks promising for a red wave to wash away President Biden’s underachievements. But the key word is vigilance. GOP operatives must be on their toes to ensure that this election is not stolen by corrupt machine ledger-de-main.

Being single does not mean that your estate planning is any simpler than if you were married. In fact, singles usually have more complicated estates if they do not have close natural heirs, such as a spouse or child. Moreover, it is even more important to have Advance Directives in place to plan for incapacity. A complete estate plan includes not only a Last Will and Testament, but a health care proxy, power of attorney, and living will.

A health care proxy allows a person to appoint an individual to make medical decisions for them if deemed incapacitated by a physician. For married couples, the spouse is often the first choice to serve in this role. But, for a single person the choice may not be as obvious and signing a Health Care Proxy makes it clear who will be in charge of those decisions. A Living Will is a statement of one’s wishes about endof-life decisions. Taking the time to think about this in advance and put it on paper helps make certain

your directions are followed if the situation arises.

Beyond decisions about health care, empowering someone to make financial decisions is also a vital part of an estate plan. Most single individuals hold their assets in their sole names, not jointly with anyone else. For this reason, naming an agent under a power of attorney is crucial to ensuring your needs are met if you become unable to manage your financial affairs. Giving someone the power to act on your behalf should not be taken lightly. Carefully consider who you appoint as your agent and the specific powers granted.

A complete estate plan addresses death as well. A Last Will and Testament dictates who will handle the deceased's assets and how those assets are distributed. It is crucial to understand which assets pass through a Will and which outside of a Will. The assets that pass through a Will are those in one’s sole name with no designated beneficiary. Such assets can include bank accounts,

VETERANS

The U.S. Marine Corps was established on November 10th, 1775, by the Second Continental Congress, stating that “ Battalions of Marines be raised” for service as landing forces with the fleet. The first Commissioned officer in the Continental Marines was Samuel Nicholas who remained the senior Marine officer throughout the Revolutionary War. The treaty of Paris in 1783 brought an end to the Revolutionary War as the last of Navy’s ships were sold. The Continental Navy and Marines went out of existence.

The formal reestablishment of the Marine Corps, was on July 11th 1798. Marines saw action in the quasi-war with France and took part in many operations against the Barbary pirates along the “Shores of Tripoli.”

Marines participated in numerous naval operations during the War of 1812. They defended Washington and fought alongside Andrew Jackson in the defeat of the British at New Orleans. During the Mexican War (1846-1848), Marines seized enemy seaports on both the Gulf and Pacific coasts. A battalion of Marines joined General Winfield Scott’s army at Pueblo and fought all the way to the “Halls of Montezuma,” Mexico City.

In World War I (19171918) the Marine Corps distinguished itself on the battlefields of France as the 4th Marine Brigade earned the title of “Devil Dogs” for heroic action during 1918 at Belleau Wood, Soissons, St. Michiel Blanc Mont, and in the final Meuse Argonne offensive. Marine aviation,

brokerage accounts, and real estate. Usually retirement accounts and life insurance policies have designated beneficiaries. Accounts with designated beneficiaries pass outside of the Will directly to the beneficiaries. Since a single person often holds assets in their sole name, at least some of their assets pass through their Wills.

As a single senior, you might consider establishing a revocable trust rather than a simple Will. You maintain complete control

during your lifetime and appoint a successor in case of incapacity or death. A trust has the advantage of avoiding probate so assets pass almost immediately to chosen beneficiaries. Avoiding probate is important where there is a need for seamless transition or family make up would complicate probate.

Every Will must go through probate, meaning a Surrogate Court judge validating the Will. Any time a Will goes through probate, the deceased's closest blood relatives

must sign a waiver. This is an issue if you are not leaving assets to close family members or when you don't know the whereabouts of your closest blood relatives. A single person may have a great support group consisting of dear friends instead of family. It could be burdensome to find first cousins or have to rely on them not to contest a Will. A trust is much easier to administer than the complexities of Surrogate's Court and avoids having to locate long lost relatives.

Unmarried individuals need an estate plan as much, if not more, than their married counterparts. Seeking the advice of an estate planning attorney ensures your affairs are in order during your lifetime and at your death.

History and Origin of U.S. Marines

December 1948, the U.S. Marine Corps agreed to provide a force to protect U.S. embassies and consulates throughout the world. The U.S. Marine Security Guards (MSG) identified volunteers to fill these assignments, and the MSG program was formed in 1949. The Defense Authorization Act increased the number of MSGs to approximately 3,450 at more than 150 diplomatic posts worldwide.

which dates from 1912, also played a part in the war effort. Marine pilots flew day bomber missions over France and Belgium. More than 30,000 Marines served in France.

In World War II the Marines had developed a strong strength of six divisions, five air wings and supporting troops of 483,113. The war

cost the Marines nearly 87,000 dead and wounded and 82 Marines had earned the Medal of Honor. The Marines also served in the Korean War (1950-1953) where more than 25,000 Marines were killed or wounded. The Vietnam War (1962-1975) the Marine strength in Vietnam rose to a peak of approximately 85,000.

Post World War II: In

Today’s Marine Corps stands ready to continue in the proud tradition of those who so valiantly fought and died serving our country. Combining a long and proud heritage of faithful service to the nation, with resolve to face tomorrow’s challenges will continue to keep the Marine Corps the “best of the best”.

2022 General Election

South Shore Press endorses Lee Zeldin for Governor of the Great State of New York. Let us be reminded that Kathy Hochul has assumed the Governor's seat in New York by DEFAULT, only after a disgraced former Governor Andrew Cuomo was forced to resign amid allegations of abuse of the office and of the public's trust. Kathy Hochul was not elected Governor - therefore, she is not our Governor by will of the people.

Let us look at Kathy Hochul's record: Since assuming the role of Governor, violent crimes have soared at alarming rates. Every time you turn on the news, we don't hear of one shootingthere are MULTIPLE shootings every day in New York City and across our suburbs! There was a shooting incident which, though not aimed at Lee Zeldin's family, landed on his front porch of his residence. And let us not forget that earlier this year, Lee Zeldin himself was the victim of a targeted attack while on the campaign trail. This is unacceptable!!

Kathy Hochul has done nothing to change revolving door bail laws that are on the books. Lee Zeldin is tough on

crime. He is a supporter of law enforcement as these officers put their lives on the line each and every day when they leave the comfort of their homes to protect New Yorkers. Lee Zeldin will champion the effort to rewrite bail laws to remove the handcuffs from judges that bind their hands so they will finally be able to decide penalties for criminals. This is a judge's job - not a politician's decision. Rewriting current bail laws will go a long way in keeping our communities safer, and Lee Zeldin is the only Gubernatorial candidate best suited to effectuate this change.

And do not let Kathy Hochul's cronies scare us into thinking Lee Zeldin would rob women of their right to choose. Abortion laws as we know them will remain in place in New York, because they have already been codified.

Now let us take a look into our wallets. Inflation is knocking at our doorstep, inching closer and closer every day. What has Kathy Hochul done to push back against inflating costs and the challenges of trying to survive in New York where constituents often must choose between

prescription drugs and putting food on the table? Absolutely Nothing! Lee Zeldin recognizes and identifies with the financial concerns of his neighbors and fellow New Yorkers all across our State. The high cost of living in New York has pierced the stratosphere to the point that the State is experiencing a mass exodus of people of all ages from senior citizens who are forced to sell their homes, to college graduates who find it impossible to return home because of the lack of good jobs. It is too expensive to live here, only compounded by the absence of good paying jobs to support the high cost of living in New York.

Let us return New York to the Empire State we know and love. This can only be accomplished by putting our future in the hands of new leadership. Even Democrats are defecting from Kathy Hochul's camp to support the candidate in Lee Zeldin who will bring a fresh, new perspective to New York. It is high time we have a change in leadership at the helm in New York. The only way this change will become reality is for voters to go to the polls on November 8th and honor Lee Zeldin with their votes.

The race for the 1st Congressional District pits Democrat Suffolk County Legislator Bridget Fleming against the Suffolk County Legislature's Chief of Staff, Republican candidate Nick LaLota. This race offers neither candidate the power of incumbency since the seat is being vacated by Congressman Lee Zeldin who is in pursuit of the Governor's seat. South Shore Press endorses Nick LaLota for election to the 1st Congressional District.

There is no doubt that Bridget Fleming comes before the voters with a wellappointed resume of elected public service. She's served on the Southampton Town Board, and was elected to the County Legislature in 2015.

Nick LaLota comes to the table with an impeccable resume that includes attending Annapolis, and a 6-year tenure on the Amityville Village

Board of Trustees before his appointment as Chief of staff to the Suffolk Legislature. LaLota also comes from a long line of familial law enforcement service.

For Fleming, she's just in the wrong place at the wrong time. We need changes in Washington. To effectuate that change, the present majority needs to be ushered out by voters turning out at the polls. As a member of the Democrat majority that now dominates and rules D.C., the Democrat party has been steering this country down a path of fiscal economic disaster. Add to that, our cities and rural communities are riddled with blight and heightening levels of violent crimes. It's high time we put a stop to the downward spiral this great nation is on, and reverse the trends so the economy navigates its way up the fiscal ladder and conversely, crime is sent on its way along a downward trend.

With Nick LaLota winning on election night, the 1st Congressional seat would remain red. Nick LaLota is poised to help bring stability back to national issues as well as locally in the 1st CD. He would learn how to navigate the inner workings on Capitol Hill from his more experienced colleagues. On a communications level, however, Nick LaLota needs to learn how to dial back his brusque mannerisms that have emerged throughout his campaign. It will be important for him to manage his schedule more efficiently to make for the press as a means of communicating his message, in part, to constituents. The GOP stands poised to take back the House on November 8th. All options considered, Nick LaLota should be given a chance to go to Washington to help reverse the dismal direction this country has taken in the last two years.

In the race for the Second Congressional District, South Shore Press endorses Andrew Garbarino over challenger Jackie Gordon. With an aggressive agenda on tap for the next two years, topping Garbarino's pyramid of priorities is to start closing America's southern porous border, and stop the resurgence of MS-13 gang members migrating into our country, AND halt the deluge of illegal fentanyl coming into the United States that has become

an epidemic and killing young, innocent Americans in alarming numbers.

Gordon is a Democrat who, if elected, would be part of the House majority that only perpetuates the problems plaguing our nation, including soaring taxes, inflation, out of control spending, dangerous crimes that have become a regular part of the news, reliance upon other countries for fuel, in addition to the fentanyl and gang problems. The only way these

issues are going to be reversed and laws that protect our nation and its hard working people are in place, is when the GOP takes back the House majority.

Andrew Garbarino has made his case during his inaugural term in Congress, and will be even more effective when some House blue seats flip to red in November. Let's keep Andrew Garbarino representing the 2nd Congressional District on Capitol Hill.

EDITORIAL NOTE

Be advised that in many races there are other minor party candidates. Unfortunately due to space constraint we are unable to list all of them and we urge you to review and consider your ballot.

When residents in the East End's 1st Senate District go to the polls on November 8th, they will be asked to elect their State Senator to represent them in Albany. The choices? State Legislative veteran Anthony Palumbo, and 22 year old Skyler Johnson. South Shore Press endorses Anthony Palumbo for election to New York’s 1st Senate District. It is nice to see young people interested in government service to their community, and Skyler Johnson certainly deserves credit for his desire to serve the people of the First Senate District, but he lacks the experience necessary to truly be effective in the State Legislature. Perhaps he should consider seeking election to a more local office where he can gain some of that experience in contrast to entering elected office at the State Senate level.

The choice to endorse

Anthony Palumbo is clear. Anthony Palumbo possesses a stellar record that speaks volumes. He served in the State House as Assemblyman for seven years before stepping up last year to succeed long tenured veteran, the now-retired Honorable Kenneth LaValle.

Prior to election to the State Legislature, Anthony Palumbo was a Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney.

Anthony Palumbo is a staunch supporter of protecting and backing law enforcement at a critical time when crime is soaring through the stratosphere. He is a strong advocate for repealing current bail laws that have become a revolving door and ties the hands of judges to execute the discretion they were elected to exercise. He is experienced in bringing home State education aid over and above that which

is in the governor's budget. High on Anthony Palumbo's agenda of priorities is to enact common sense legislation that protects the public, addresses a stressed economy, and lays the foundation for better jobs and a brighter New York for future generations.

Anthony Palumbo recognizes the most effective ways to govern and preside over legislation is to restore balance back to State Government, in contrast to the single party rule that continues to dominate Albany. Restoring this delicate balance back to our State Government requires the majority of the voting electorate go to the polls on November 8th and vote. Anthony Palumbo is the best candidate to effectuate the change that is sorely needed in Albany. Let's keep Anthony Palumbo as our State Senator. We deserve him, and he certainly deserves your vote.

In the race for New York’s 3rd Senate District, South Shore Press gives Dean Murray our strong endorsement.

Murray will bring a wealth of governmental experience to the table, having tenured experience in the State Assembly. His familiarity with the political processes in Albany allows Murray to hit the ground running on Day 1. In today's political climate with our country flirting on the verge of a recession, and crime

rising at alarming rates, there is no time for a learning curve.

At age 20, Farzeen Bham brings sub-zero experience to effectively address the issues staring constituents head on. He possesses no real political experience, and is not the best person to serve the constituents in the capacity of State Senator.

Farzeen Bham is clueless as to the inner workings of government, and to go a step further, has minimal life

experience. Dean Murray for years, has been advocating to bring balance back to the State House by breaking the Democrat stranglehold that now dominates New York Government. Dean Murray knows what it takes to create new jobs while simultaneously attracting good paying jobs to New York. He knows how to spur the economy. Dean Murray will be a voice for the people as their full-time, very vocal State Senator.

Since his election to the New York State Assembly in 1995, Fred Thiele, Jr. has delivered to the Tri Hamlet community - not just during election time, but consistently throughout his lengthy tenure. It is Fred Thiele, Jr.'s tenure as a Legislator which his opponent, Peter Ganley, criticizes, and is making term limits a hallmark of his campaign. South Shore Press endorses Fred Thiele, Jr. for reelection.

On the issue of term limits, as the incumbent eluded to with no apologies during his interview with South Shore Press, his record speaks for itself. If elected officials aren't getting the job done, constituents go to the polls and fire them. If elected officials are doing right by their constituents, then incumbents are rewarded with their communities' votes.

Conversely, Thiele says

Campaign Finance Reform should be the issue in order to "level the playing field." There are critically important issues in the works that are facing the Tri Hamlet community head on - one of them on the docket is the Forge River Sewer Project where Thiele is working diligently to ensure small business owners can tap into the sewers by way of grants and no interest loans. Also on the horizon is an offshore wind project through Smith point which, if and when approved, Thiele is working to make sure there will be a community benefits package for the Tri Hamlet community.

Where Ganley falls short in his quest for the 1st Assembly District seat, are specific, innovative solutions for the issues at hand. Sure, Ganley is calling for changes to bail laws currently in place.

Thiele is also calling for a rollback on bail reform. On abortion rights, laws as we know them are already on the books and codified in New York State. On crime, both candidates denounce unlawfully acquired firearms getting into the hands of criminals, and they both support red flag laws.

Constituents are indisputably concerned about issues that hit them in their wallets. The largest portion of homeowners' tax bills is school property taxes, and Fred Thiele, Jr. has consistently delivered record numbers of state education aid back home to the William Floyd, Center Moriches, and East Moriches school districts, and other districts further east in the 1st AD. Fred Thiele, Jr. has delivered to his constituents at home and to New Yorkers at large on virtually every platform, and deserves another term in Albany.

In the race for the Second Assembly District South Shore Press endorses incumbent Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio for reelection. Jodi Giglio possesses the experience necessary in order to navigate through the intricacies and inner workings of government to get things done for New Yorkers, and especially residents in the 2nd Assembly District. Her opponent, Wendy Hamberger, though well-intended, has no

experience as an elected official.

With the stakes being so high in Albany, across New York, and especially here in Suffolk County, there is no time for a learning curve in the State Capitol. Jodi Giglio recognizes the out of control spending that has been running rampant at both the federal and state levels, and knows the answer is that we need to pull in the reins on runaway spending so future generations won't have to pay

the price.

Even though she's running for reelection with the power of incumbency, Jodi Giglio is working hard, attending candidates' debates where Wendy Hamberger has been, by and large, a no show. Jodi Giglio is running on a proven record on all of the issues. The choice is clear. Jodi Giglio deserves to be returned to Albany for another term.

In the race for New York State's 4th Assembly District, Ed Flood, a lead prosecutor for the Brookhaven Town Law Department running on the Republican and Conservative lines, is challenging long time Democrat incumbent, Steve Englebright. South Shore Press is endorsing Ed Flood for New York State Assembly.

and businesses alike deserve to thrive in an healthy economic environment in the great Empire State - after all, New York City is known around the globe as the greatest city in the world.

our rural communities for our schools, for our infrastructure, and for our economy!

South Shore Press endorses Joe DeStefano for reelection to the Third Assembly District.

Candidate Trina Miles is not running an active campaign and could not be reached for an interview.

Joe DeStefano is successfully completing his second two year term in the State Assembly, and deserves another term. His common sense approach to finances, protecting the safety and quality of life of residents in the Third Assembly District and across New York, his attempts to put a lid on

escalating street and drugrelated crimes, the need to repeal bail reform laws as we know them and to start from a clean state, and continuing to drive education aid back to Long Island's schools, all make Joe DeStefano the best candidate for the job. He is pro life with the exceptions of rape, incest, or in instances when the mother's life is in danger.

Joe DeStefano underscores that abortion laws which are currently in place have been codified, and they are not changing, contrary to scare tactics Democrat candidates

are using in this campaign cycle.

Active throughout his community, Joe DeStefano is in sync with the needs and concerns of his constituents. When not in Albany working on legislation, Joe DeStefano is very present and visible in his district and attends numerous community-oriented events.

Joe DeStefano has made representing the Third Assembly District his full time job, and is well-deserving of a third, two-year term in Albany.

New York needs change in Albany. New Yorkers deserve to feel safe, and to be protected from violent criminals who need to be kept off the streets and put behind bars. Illegally possessed guns and firearms are running rampant in the hands of criminals. New Yorkers' wallets are shrinking. Residents

Consequently, Steve Englebright, while he has an admirable, outstanding environmental record and lengthy tenure of service to New Yorkers, is in the wrong place at the wrong time. He is part of the Democrat majority that votes party line, therefore driving revenues into New York City. We, on Long Island, rightfully deserve our share of much of the resources that NYC is enjoying right here in

The power to make the change that is so desperately needed in Albany is in the hands of the voters. For far roo long, New York has been falling apart at the seams under the one party Democrat rule that has dominated the State House for far too long. The "one woman and two men in a room" cliché has got to end if we are going to see New York bounce back from its all time low. South Shore Press believes the 4th Assembly District seat that has been blue far too long, should be flipped to red by electing Ed Flood.

conservative approach to finances and budgetary protections, and his aggressive approach toward recouping millions of dollars in revenues which the county has been cheated out of, help keep Suffolk County's fiscal house on the straight and narrow.

John Kennedy recognizes his charge is to protect the finances of Suffolk County residents.

Since taking the helm as Comptroller eight years ago, Kennedy's office has refinanced $850 million in existing

debt, netting Suffolk County $51 million in savings. The duties and responsibilities of the County Comptroller are voluminous, and as John Kennedy himself eluded to, his is a small office of a dedicated staff of 105 with a lot of big responsibilities. Upon completing his second four year term as County Comptroller, John Kennedy's proven expertise in finances, coupled with his strong work ethic, make him best poised to serve a third term as Suffolk County Comptroller.

South Shore Press offers our strong endorsement to Vincent Puleo for election to the office of Suffolk County Clerk. Lisa Jimenez is making her first bid to elected office, and while her intentions appear to be genuine, South Shore Press believes she lacks the experience necessary to spearhead the complex operations of the Clerk's office, which is an asset that

Vincent Puleo undisputably brings to the

table. Vincent Puleo has been successfully serving residents in the Town of Smithtown as their Town Clerk for the past 17 years, and ran unopposed for reelection last year. During his tenure as Smithtown Town Clerk, Vincent Puleo transformed the Clerk's office into 21st Century technology, integrating efficient operating systems.

Vincent Puleo promises to streamline operations of the

Suffolk County Clerk's office in order to make processing records more efficient and provide constituents with top flight services. If elected, Vincent Puleo promises to give 110% to the County Clerk's office, a campaign promise we believe he will keep. Vincent Puleo has his finger on the pulse of the operations of the Clerk's office, and is clearly the better candidate for this office in this race.
