CRIME COMES TO ZELDIN'S FRONT

Republican Gubernatorial candidate, Congressman Lee Zeldin and his wife, Diana, were en route home from the Bronx Columbus Day Parade on Sunday when they received a call from one of their twin daughters, Mikayla, telling them they locked themselves in the family's upstairs bathroom after hearing gunshots and screams coming from outside their Shirley home. The Zeldins' other twin daughter, Arianna, was simultaneously calling police to alert them. The twins just turned 16 last week.
Law enforcement response was swift, finding two teens, both age 17, were shot with bullets that were discharged from a passing sedan. Both of the teens were found outside Zeldin's residenceone hiding under the front porch, and the other hiding underneath a nearby bush. It is supposed that a third teen may have run from the scene.
As law enforcement continues to probe the shootings and the investigation continues, police are saying the shootings were not aimed at the Zeldin Family, but the victims may have been targeted. One of the bullets recovered was found within 30 feet of where Zeldin's daughters were inside their home, doing their homework at the kitchen table.
At an 8 p.m. Sunday press conference, Zeldin, walking hand in hand with his daughters together with Mrs. Zeldin, emerged from their home stepping in front of crime tape that cordoned off their residence which, at press time, remained a crime scene, to brief a throng of television cameras and news reporters on the sequence of events. Zeldin said he was "grateful" for the efforts of law enforcement, and expressed pride in his daughters' response to the life-threatening incident. "It hits really close to home when it shows up on your doorstep," an outraged Zeldin said.
Ava Torres, President of the Greater Mastic Beach Chamber of Commerce conveyed concerns over this latest in a series of criminal activities in the
community. "This incident speaks to the problem that exists in our neighborhood - we need to take this seriously and to watch out for one another," Torres said. "There have been numerous violent activities that have been ongoing, and people need to know that when you see somethings, say something." Torres added, "services need to be rendered to our kids with mental health issues, and," she underscored, " there needs to be more law enforcement because crime has been escalating all over the country and right here in our own community." Torres said Sunday's incident "could have been a whole lot worse," stating, "this is a whole block of families with several children, and anybody could have gotten hurt or worse."
Torres is urging residents and merchants to become involved in their local Civic associations and chamber organizations. "We cannot solve this alone," Torres said. "We must be proactive, and we need everyone's help." Then Torres posed the question, "How
and where are our kids getting guns?"
No arrests have been made at press time, and the investigation remains ongoing as police search for the perpetrator who fired the gunshots.
Congressman Lee Zeldin issued the following statement after the shooting took place on their property at their home in Shirley, New York:
“Thank you to everyone who reached out expressing concern regarding the shooting outside my home this afternoon around 2:18pm.
My 16 year old daughters, Mikayla and Arianna, were at our house doing homework, while my wife, Diana, and I were in the car, having just departed the Bronx Columbus Day Parade in Morris Park.
After my daughters heard the gunshots and the screaming, they ran upstairs, locked themselves in the bathroom and immediately called 911. They acted very swiftly and smartly every step of the way and Diana and I are extremely proud of them.
The two individuals who were shot were laying down under my front porch and the bushes in front of our porch. My understanding is that they have been transported to area hospitals. I do not know their identities.
Law enforcement is currently at our house. My entire family is at home working with the investigators and providing the security footage from our home cameras.
My daughters are shaken, but ok. Like so many New Yorkers, crime has literally made its way to our front door. My family is grateful to all who have reached out and we will provide another update when we can.”
When residents in the 2nd Assembly District go to the polls on November 8th, they will be asked to choose between Republican incumbent Jodi Giglio, and Democrat challenger Wendy Hamberger to represent them as their voice in Albany. Giglio will appear on both the Republican and Conservative lines of the ballot. Hamberger will appear on the Democratic line.
Giglio is running for her second term in the Assembly. Prior to being elected to the State Assembly, Giglio served 10 years on the Riverhead Town Board as councilwoman. Hamberger is making her inaugural run for public office.
The candidates were asked why they are seeking election to the 2nd Assembly seat. Said Giglio: "I love being a public servant. I am a problem solver and being a small business owner, I understand the needs of the people and the frustrations in working with government. It's important that we help businesses recover from COVID, that we fund education, and that our kids receive the education and get the mental health help that they need. We also have to fight inflation on the federal and
state levels."
Hamberger is a divorce attorney and owns her own law firm offering low cost legal fees: "When I started working, I volunteered and did a lot of pro bono work, because there were so many people who couldn't afford to pay the high cost of legal fees. I realize as far as education and health care, the middle class gets screwed; they can't afford health insurance, and with huge inflation, that's a big chunk out of their paychecks."
On the escalating issue of a woman's right to choose, Hamberger takes a pro choice stance. "Women are in jeopardy of having their right to choose taken away, even though Republicans say that's not so because of Constitutional law, of course."
Giglio is pro life, and while she is opposed to late term abortion and notes that the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v Wade will not change abortion laws as we know them in New York, further explains, "New York has the most liberal reproductive laws."
Taxes and the high cost of living, compounded by inflation, are hallmarks to the candidates' campaigns. "In my practice I've seen so much divorce, escalating mental illness and drug addiction,"
Hamberger said. "Sixty percent of people are living paycheck to paycheck and living off their credit cards to pay for necessities like food and prescription drugs." Asked how she would address the tax issue if elected, Hamberger told South Shore Press: "I'm not sure; I'd have to look into that more, but the federal government should be stepping up to provide more money for schools and mental health resources."
But Giglio explains: "We escalated passing property tax cut legislation so that instead of waiting until 2025, this will take effect in January
2023. Legislation was passed to lower the gas tax, and we have a bill pending for reduced taxes on personal hygiene products." On the topic of state education aid, Giglio said Foundation Aid will continue to flow to school districts, but noted two of her school districts located with the 2nd AD- Riverhead and Greenport, received appreciably more aid based on income levels, an initiative Giglio said she and Senator Anthony Palumbo were responsible for.
Asked what makes her the better candidate over the incumbent,
Hamberger stated, "I heard good and not so good things about my opponent. She has more experience than I do, but I don't see any connection between her and the community. I'm in the trenches and am much more connected to the community. Also," Hamberger continued, "she's not in the majority. District 2 has a Democrat majority so I can help bring more funding back to our District."
Giglio said she's confident but isn't taking anything for granted: "I'm running on my record, I work hard, and I'm 100% dedicated to my constituents and taxpayers. I talk with the people, and I know and understand their needs. I'd love to hear my opponent's perspectives on the issues, but she has not gone on any debates." Opposed to one party rule that currently exists in Albany, Giglio told South Shore Press: "That's not what our Founding Fathers had in mind when they created the three branches of government. From the top of the ticket, we have to get Lee (Zeldin) in AD governor to change and break up the beaurocratic office where people are unaccountable to the public, running departments, and making decisions, again, with no accountability."
Former New York State Assemblyman Dean Murray, 58, and political hopeful Farzeen Bham, 20, are facing off in a race to win the 3rd District Senate seat in the November 8th election. Murray is running on the Republican and Conservative lines of the ballot.
Bham is running on the Democrat line. Murray is a small business owner. Bham is the president's secretary of the Turkish American Religious Foundation, and attends SUNY Stony Brook pursuing a bachelor's degree in political science.
The candidates were asked their reasons for seeking election to the State Senate. Says Murray: "I've seen so many of my friends and neighbors move out of New York because they just can't afford to stay. It's too expensive." The solution?
Citing New York as one of the highest taxed states in the nation, Murray said, "We're hoping to bring balance back to Albany and not just have one voice from the radical left. We've had one party rule since 2019, and we need that balance and people in there who understand that to spend money, you have to have money. You can't keep going back to the taxpayers and continue taxing them, because the cost of living in New York, and especially on Long Island, is just too high, and you are going to lose them," Murray said. "We're looking to get enough seats in the Senate to bring back the majority."
Bham noted his reason for his first time up at bat in pursuit of a political office: "After seeing a lack of representation for Long Island, I wanted to step up and try to make a difference. There are three big issues, and first is that I'm pushing for there to be a lower cost for college and trade schools," Bham stated. "Education is an investment, and there's also a lack of skilled workers. Second, we should be providing more relief for small businesses, because there's a lack of loan opportunities, and third, I'm a big supporter of the New York
COUNTY
Healthcare Act and we have to provide comprehensive health care to New Yorkers," Bham said.
Doubling down on his stance against one party rule that has dominated Albany politics since 2019, Murray underscored the narrative in his conversations with voters on the campaign trail. "I have knocked on thousands of doors talking with people throughout my district, (which encompasses all of Medford, Blue Point to the Brookhaven Town-Islip border, Selden, Coram, Middle Island, Manorville and Eastport), and what I'm hearing is that the blanks and independent voters are leaning very heavily toward Republican."
In response to Murray's position on one party rule, Bham told South Shore Press: "The fact is, the people of New York voted for one party rule. That's why the Democrats are now in the majority. We make sure there's a balance in compromise, so the idea that one party rule is bad, that's up to the voters; and now its in Democratic hands, and that's the will of the people," Bham said. "If Republicans have a problem with that, then they need to go out with their fiscal policies. "
Asked about the high cost of living in New York and the current administration's fiscal policies, however, Bham stated: "There are a lot of disagreements with what has been done in Albany, and there needs to be more fiscal
responsibility and accountability. The Democrats are in power, but my party needs to do a better job of accountability," Bham continued. "When you pass bills, people expect things, and they don't see things happening, so people have a right to ask questions."
Asked what needs to be changed in Albany, Bham told South Shore Press: "First off, they're creating bills . . . especially the Executive Branch and the DOT where we need more watchdogs, especially from the Senate side. . . There are huge amounts of money by state government, and there's a lack of accountability. There is a lack of oversight on spending," Bham said, "and the Republican minority does a great job in seeking accountability."
Infrastructure and road repairs are falling short of constituent expectations, according to Murray. "The Road and Bridge Repair Trust Fund is paid for by gasoline tax, and there are millions of dollars in this fund, which is a pay as you go fund," explains Murray, underscoring that projects not included in the budget are funded through the Road and Bridge Repair fund as part of the State's DOT fund. However, Murray points to state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli's findings in an audit which he says "only 17 cents on every dollar were used for road repairs. The rest," Murray said, "was used to pay off debt, so what this current administration has done, in essence is they have raided this fund."
Bham weighed in on roads and the infrastructure: "It's a disgrace the people of Long Island pay huge property taxes, and they're not given the infrastructure. It's a disgrace," Bham said, "that Albany needs to fix this, because there are huge amounts of spending by government and a lack of accountability as to where the state is going."
On the topic of "common sense spending," Murray said: "I believe in career training and BOCES and apprenticeship programs so those who don't go to college are in

good, well paying careers. I believe in giving a hand up, not a handout; yet, we have people (illegal immigrants), who are skipping the line and are being handed everything."
On bail reform, Murray said, "there needs to be a complete scrapping of the laws, and we need to start over. I don't want a kid who shoplifted a pair of sneakers to be put in jail. Democrats took the purpose of this bill to the radical extreme and let criminals out, and they become repeat offenders. Right now, " Murray continued, "judges' hands are tied, and we have to pass legislation that gives judges the ability to use discretion whether someone is a danger to society."
The candidates offered up their
reasons why each is the better candidate over his opponent. "I think I respect my opponent. He's done great work as an Assemblyman, but I'll be in the State majority after novel, and I'm more of a common sense problem solver," Bham continued. "If my opponent is elected, he's in the minority and won't do much because he will be in the minority. I'm a moderate Democrat and I can strike compromise."
"I am confident that my message is resonating with voters," Murray said, "and my message represents smaller government, responsible spending, and creating more jobs. I'm confident, but I run as if I'm 10 points behind because I take nothing for granted."
When residents in the Second Congressional District go to the polls on November 8th, they will be asked to choose between Republican incumbent Andrew Garbarino who is seeking election to his second two year term, and Democrat challenger Jackie Gordon.
Garbarino, age 38, will appear on the Republican and Conservative lines of the ballot. Garbarino is completing his inaugural term in Congress. Prior to his election to Congress in 2020, Garbarino was a private attorney in downtown Sayville before serving four terms in the New York State Assembly representing the 7th Assembly District.
Gordon, age 57, will appear on the Democrat and Working Family Party lines. She served 13 years as Councilwoman on the Babylon Town Board, and was a combat veteran serving the Military Police for 27 years before retiring as a lieutenant colonel, with four deployments as a reservist. Gordon was a New York public school teacher for 32 years-22 of them in the 2nd Congressional District.
Both candidates say they will bring a wealth of experience to the table in their quest to serve in the 118th Congress. Garbarino is asking constituents to send him back to Capitol Hill for another two-year term to continue the work that needs to be done. "I've made campaign promises that have been delivered, and there's still work to do, because some projects take longer than two years to complete," Garbarino told South Shore Press in an interview last weekend. "When I can no longer be effective, then I'll call it quits," he added, "but I clearly have a lot of work that I want to get done, and I want to continue serving the constituents of the 2nd Congressional District."
Gordon offered her reasons for running: "I've lived her for three decades, and I want to represent the folks in the 2nd Congressional District. It's high time Washington looks like America again. With my life experience," Gordon continued, "I understand the struggles of regular working folks. They deserve affordable and accessible health care, we need the prices of medications to be reduced , and co-pays need to be eliminated. We must also make sure that Long Island veterans have the services they need when they return home."
Gordon's position on Roe v Wade and a woman's right to
Congressman Andrew Garbarino (R)choose is clear: "Women should be able to make decisions about their own bodies," Gordon said. "These are decisions that should be made between women and their doctors, not government. When I'm in Congress I'm going to work tooth and nail to make sure this is federally codified across the land," Gordon said.
The candidates criticized each other's past and positions on the issues. Criticizing the incumbent, Gordon said, "My opponent signed the Amicus Brief to overturn Roe v Wade, and he believes in no abortions... as we're canvassing the District and knocking on doors, we are gaining momentum, and we are encouraged because people are not happy with the direction of representation from Mr. Garbarino or his votes..." Gordon said the incumbent is not present throughout the District. In response, Garbarino stated, "There's thousands of people we've helped with casework, and I would disagree with my opponent about how involved in the community I am. When I'm not in DC voting on legislation, I have been up and down the District talking to my constituents and listening to their concerns. I just attended a veterans breakfast and Jackie Gordon was nowhere to be found. These baseless attacks," Garbarino said, " will not fool the people of the 2nd Congressional District into voting for her." In response to Gordon's attack on Garbarino's stance on abortion, Garbarino, who voted against late term abortion stated, "I support states' rights to legislate and govern laws on this issue. New York State codified access to abortion three years before Roe was ever decided. For Democrats to day we're going to change the law when we're in the supermajority, they're using scare tactics. "
Garbarino then countered his opponent's record, telling South Shore Press," Jackie Gordon has her own record she should answer for including why she
Jackie Gordon (D)was relieved of command when she was in the military, and why she supports Defund the Police and bail reform at a time when crime is devastating New York communities."
In response to Garbarino's assertions, Gordon denied that she would defund law enforcement and does support reforming current bail laws. "I do not support defunding the police. I would ensure our police have the resources and training needed to do their jobs... as for bail reform, it is clear that we need to correct our broken criminal justice system. But," Gordon continued, "I do not feel our current bail reform law is the right fix. Unlike my opponent, I will work across the aisle on federal measures to tackle this issue." Speaking to her military service record, Gordon replied, "I am the only person in this race who has served this nation, and I did so honorably for more than 29 years." Gordon served tours in Iraq, and Afghanistan. "I retired honorably at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and it's insulting to all our military service men and women that my opponent would attack me for my service."
Other issues that Gordon has placed high on her agenda include public safety and gun control. "I've spent my entire life focusing on safety, and law and order, " Gordon said. "We have to get guns off the streets and out of the hands of folks who illegally get them, and tighten common sense gun regulations to ensure people with mental hygiene or substance abuse issues don't have guns. We have to ban assault weapons," Gordon continued. "From Maine to New Mexico, moms and dads don't know if their children are going to be safe when they go to school with so many mass shootings; schools should be a safe haven. I will always fight to keep our country, communities, and kids safe." Gordon said she will support climate issues, clean air and water initiatives, and will

work to "bring federal funding to the district to protect the vulnerable shoreline so that it is resilient."
Taking a strong stance against illegal immigration along the southern border, coupled with record amounts of fentanyl crossing the border and being shipped cross- country, and citing increasing record numbers of young Americans over dosing on fentanyl, Garbarino sponsored a resolution targeting drug dealers that if approved, would give authorities the ability to add fentanyl to the list of weapons of mass destruction. "It is Congress's belief that fentanyl should be placed on the list of weapons of mass destruction," Garbarino said. A staunch supporter of veterans, Garbarino established a standing veterans council compromised of local vets so he can hear directly from them about issues facing veterans and their families. Garbarino introduced the Veterans Suicide Prevention Act directing the VA to study root causes and risk factors of suicide to address the issue. He supported the PACT Act to expand benefits to support veterans with toxic exposurerelated illness from burn pits.
The candidates offered views on what makes them the better candidate over their opponents. "My life experiences make me best suited and poised," Gordon said. "My military experience and working on the Town Board with Democrats and Republicans - I've never looked to the left or three right or if someone was Democrat or Republican. I just looked to get the mission done. I've worked with Democrats and Republicans upstate and downstate with all governmental levels, non government organizations and communities. I am retired," Gordon said, "and my sole job is to get to Congress and to serve the people full time."
Garbarino asserts his experience and relationships he's established make him the best person to continue representing constituents in the 2nd Congressional District. For example, Garbarino stated: "There's so much to do and a priority issue will be to make sure the 9/11 Health Care Fund is fully funded. The fund is currently $3 billion short, and we now run the risk of first responders getting sick and not getting the health care they need." Garbarino said he's familiar with the needs of his constituents. "I grew up on the South Shore in Sayville, and I will work closely with Lee Zeldin when he's our Governor."

Suffolk County government is far from alone in having its computer network hacked last month—a massive data breach from which only in recent weeks has it begun to recover.
“Top 10 Biggest Government Data Breaches of All Time in the U.S.” is the title of a report on the website Digital Guardian. The list is topped by the hacking of the U.S. Voter Database in 2015. In this, “the largest government data breach to date, a database of 191 million voters was exposed,” it says. “Again, and almost unfathomably, the problem came down to human error and oversight: the database was incorrectly configured and exposed on the open Internet. It contained the personal information—names, dates of birth, party affiliations, emails, addresses, and more—of all registered voters in the 50 states…”
At Number 2, the National Archives and Records Administration got hacked. In 2009 after “a hard drive malfunctioned” and NARA sent it to “their private IT contractors for repairs. The problem: the hard drive contained the highly sensitive information for a reported 76 million [military] veterans, and NARA forgot to wipe the drive before sending it off premises.”
Also included is Virginia, and how in 2009 “a hacker reportedly breached a Virginia government health website used by state pharmacists and stole the personal information of 8.3 million Virginians. The hacker later taunted the government and FBI, demanding $10 million for the safe return of the information.” Then there’s the hacking of the Office of Texas Attorney General in 2012 with 6.5 million people “compromised,” this office having “mistakenly included sensitive information, including Social Security numbers, in a voter database file released to plaintiff’s attorneys.” And the list goes on.
Says Digital Guardian: “From U.S. federal government agencies to state agencies, cyberattacks have dug up U.S. citizens’ private information through every level of government.”
Cyberspace is clearly a new Wild West. And Suffolk County government has become a victim. Those who hacked into the Suffolk computer system have demanded a ransom, as is the way the cybercriminals operate. Who are the sheriffs in this computer-based Wild West and are governments— including Suffolk County government—doing what they
Abrams, “founder and owner” of the website Bleeping Computer in 2016 “helped organize… what became known as the Ransomware Hunting Team.” This “band of about a dozen tech wizards in seven countries soon proved indispensable to victims who couldn’t afford, or refused out of principle, to pay ransoms to cybercriminals. Without charging for its services, the team has cracked more than 300 major ransomware strains and variants, saving an estimated 4 million victims from paying billions of dollars in ransoms.”
might to protect people’s sensitive information?
As to U.S. government cyberspace would-be sheriffs, the Government Accountability Office, a watchdog unit within the federal government, last week issued a 70page report stating the agencies that are supposed to protect us from hacking “can improve collaboration.” These include the FBI, Secret Service and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.
However, the issue goes way beyond our nation’s borders with hackers functioning globally. As the international police organization, INTERPOL, with
194 member countries, declares under the title “Cybercrime” on its website: “Today, the world is more digitally connected than ever before. Criminals take advantage of this online transformation to target weaknesses in online systems, networks and infrastructure. There is a massive economic and social impact on governments, businesses and individuals worldwide.” So, INTERPOL “is increasing the capacity of our member countries to prevent, detect, investigate and disrupt cybercrimes.”
A successful initiative at the grassroots to combat cyberattacks has been happening. In the current issue of New York magazine is an article about how Lawrence
This extensive, must-read piece says of the cybercriminals: “Concentrated in countries such as Russia and North Korea, where they appear to enjoy a measure of government protection, the attackers are often self-taught, under-employed tech geeks.”
Did Suffolk County government do all of what it should have to try to prevent the hacking attack on it? No, says Suffolk Comptroller John M. Kennedy, Jr. He says county government through a private contractor acquired a “million-dollar firewall” but, says Kennedy, “some of its features our people weren’t able to successfully activate.”
The New York Yankees have just completed one of the wildest seasons in recent memory ... and it means very little to Yankees fans. After an offseason filled with questions about the direction of the team, who was playing short, and what the expectations should be, the Yankees came out of the gates on fire. New York cruised through the All Star break as the best team in baseball and it seemed everything was right in Yankee land. Then, the wheels seemed to fall off and the finger pointing began. Albeit because of a rash of injuries, but the Bronx Bombers weren't bombing anything on offense, their vaunted defense looked lost and they were fielding a team of backup players and had the fans questioning every lineup card Aaron Boone put out there.
Recently though, as health began to come back to this
team, there is a rejuvenated feel among fans. The chase for 60, then 61, and then 62 took some of the attention away from the excellent job the, now healthy, Yankees were doing. New York has been rolling and this team is once again looking like they will chase a championship.
The Yankees open the postseason with +550 odds to win the World Series this season. That is the 4th best overall odds and the second best odds in the American League to the Houston Astros. Many Yankees fans would argue though that the Astros are the team that counts. Houston stands ominously in the Yankees way, if they get out of the first round, and that Astros team has been the bane of their existence. By every metric Houston is a tough hurdle but while the Yankees are getting healthy, the good thing is Houston is dealing
with some injuries and issues.
This year has brought Yankee fans from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. Just look at IKF and think back to mid
August where it seemed he made an error every day and fans wanted anyone from AAA to take his place. Well, he just tore up September and that is what
New York seemed to have done as a team. The Yankees are back to being hot again, will that be enough to end this topsy turvy year on a high note?
On September 28, 2022, the USCG Office of Investigations & Analysis (CG-INV) released Marine Safety Advisory 0122 titled, “Maritime Distress Communication Devices," which is available on their Safety Alert internet site. In it, they detail what devices the USCG is listening to in real time, and which they are not. This column is about that.
Over the past decade, maritime distress communication devices have proliferated in the marketplace. Some devices transmit via satellite, while others transmit on terrestrial frequencies, and these devices use different technologies to relay the distress notice. Of note, not all devices notify the U. S. Coast Guard directly.
• Digital Selective Calling (DSC) – DSC is an internationally recognized radio system protocol to facilitate establishing digital and voice communications between other maritime and terrestrial-based radio stations on the same network. A radio equipped with DSC can generate a distress alert with vessel ID and position data, and an alert is relayed by other DSC-capable radios. Typical “store-bought”
Very High Frequency (VHF) radios come with a DSC “button” that, when linked to your GPS, transmit your location and your Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI# - a unique 9 digit number that is assigned to a DSC radio or an AIS unit) to the USCG and all DSC equipped vessels in the area. In addition to the NAVCEN web link below, you can get one – at your favorite price (free!) – from BoatUS. https://www. boatus.com/MMSI/MMSI/ ObtainMMSI#!
In all cases, the user must register* their Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) to link the radio to the vessel. Information to register MMSI can be found at https://www. navcen.uscg.gov/maritimemobile-service-identity.
*Failure to do so may delay rescue.
• Very High Frequency (VHF) Radio – The VHF maritime radio operates in the maritime very high frequency band of 156 to 162 MHz (channel 01A to channel 88) and provides digital and voice communications within the radio line of sight range (approximately 5-20 miles depending on the antenna height above water). A radio equipped with DSC can
use channel 70 (156.525 MHz) for reporting a distress or to contact other stations by entering their MMSI and then switching to a voice channel for further communications.
The U.S. Coast Guard monitors channels 16 (voice) and 70 (DSC).
• Electronic Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) – The EPIRB is an emergency alerting device operating in the dedicated 406.0 – 406.1 MHz distress band monitored by the International Cospas-Sarsat Programme. It may be water-activated or manually activated, depending on the model. Orbiting satellites detect and relay the signals to ground operating stations, which can locate the source and relay the coordinates and associated registration information to the appropriate internationally recognized Rescue Coordination Center worldwide. Newer EPIRBs also include encoded Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) position data and an Automatic Identification System Search and Rescue Transmitter (AISSART) locating signal. EPIRB distress alerts from U.S. coded beacons, as well as any EPIRB alert located in a U.S. SAR Region, are routed directly to a U.S. Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center.
• Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) – The PLB is a manually activated emergency alerting device operating in the dedicated 406.0 – 406.1 MHz distress band monitored by the International Cospas-Sarsat Programme. Orbiting satellites detect and relay the signals to ground operating stations, which can locate the source and relay the coordinates and associated registration information to the appropriate Rescue Coordination Center
once a minute.
• Radar Search and Rescue Transponder (Radar-SART) –The radar-SART may be water activated or manually activated, depending on the model. Once activated, the radar-SART listens for a 9 GHz X-Band radar signal and, when one is detected, transmits a response that is displayed by the triggering radar as a line of 12 dots equally spaced by about 0.64 nautical mile (1,185 km) from the center of the radar display. The detection range is limited to the radar line of sight, typically 12-15 miles. The radarSART is not designed as a distress-alerting device, but does assist the locating those in distress.
Lastly, the following recommendations are made to all owners and operators of recreational or commercial vessels:
worldwide. Newer PLBs also provide an AIS-SART locating signal as well as GNSS position data. Similar to EPIRBs, PLB distress alerts are routed directly to a Rescue Coordination Center based on the beacon location.
• Maritime Survivor Locating Device (MSLD) – The MSLD, also called a Man Over-Board (MOB) device, is a personal device intended for use by persons at risk of falling into the water such as mariners and workers on marine installations or docks, or by divers returning to the surface out of sight of their dive boats. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires that a MSLD transmit on at least one of the following frequencies: 121.5 MHz (aviation distress), 156.525 MHz (channel 70), 156.750 MHz (channel 15), 156.800 MHz (channel 16), 156.850 MHz (channel 17), 161.975 MHz (AIS1), 162.025 MHz (AIS2), or include a function intended to send a distress message directly to the U.S. Coast Guard or any other search and rescue organization. MSLDs transmit on frequencies that are received on a device monitored by personnel at the MSLD-wearer’s vessel or facility. The devices typically provide only line of sight (5-15 miles) communications and the functionality varies by the device model and the operating frequencies used. Note, MSLDs may NOT notify a search and rescue authority, such as the U.S. Coast Guard, depending on the device capabilities and operating location.
Guard directly:
• Satellite Emergency Notification Device (SEND) – A SEND is a portable emergency notification and locating device, which uses commercial satellite systems. The devices use an internal Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) chip to gather location information. When the SEND is triggered, this information is sent via commercial satellite to a commercial monitoring agency whose role is to relay the information to an appropriate responding agency based on the device’s reported location. Examples of responding agencies could be local search and rescue authorities, local police, or voluntary search and rescue. At present, no SEND operators have established formal arrangements or procedures with the U.S. Coast Guard for receiving SEND reports. A subscription service is required for a SEND and the service area coverage depends on the satellite service provider and may not provide worldwide coverage.
Examples of SENDs are the Garmin inReach and the Globalstar SPOT.
Always wear a Coast Guardapproved life jacket while underway. People rarely have time to locate and don a life jacket during an actual emergency.
Make sure your life jacket fits properly. People can slip out of ill-fitting life jackets when they hit the water, which immediately decreases their chances of survival.
Locator beacons can help us find you faster. Attaching a functional EPIRB to your vessel, or a PLB to your life jacket, and knowing how to use them can help rescuers locate you in an emergency.
Use a marine VHF radio. A cell phone may go out of range or run out of battery power when you need it the most. Make sure you familiarize yourself with how to use and properly maintain your radio.
Have more than one way to communicate. It is important to have more than one communication device on your vessel. We recommend having a properly working marine VHF radio, a well-charged cell phone in a waterproof case, and a properly registered EPIRB, PLB, or both.
So, there you have it!
BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at joinuscgaux@aol.com or go directly to the US Coast Guard Auxiliary “Flotilla Finder” at http://www.cgaux.org/units.php and we will help you “get in this thing . . .”

• Automatic Identification System Search and Rescue Transmitter (AIS-SART) – The AIS-SART is a SAR transmitter used for locating survival craft. It may be used in lieu of the radar SART. It transmits messages from the survival craft received and displayed on AIS installations (SOLAS regulated ships are required to carry AIS installations). The position and time synchronization for the class A position report is derived from a built in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver (e.g., global positioning system (GPS)) and updated at a rate of

Yes, you can still sell your home if there are liens against it. A mortgage is a common lien that is normally paid off at the closing. You are required to pay off any open liens from your personal funds or at the closing out of sale proceeds. Sometimes it is possible to find a cash buyer who is willing to pay the liens off on your behalf above the agreed upon sales price.
A lien is a legal claim against real property by a creditor of the property owner, recorded in the county clerk’s office. The lien remains on the property until the property owner pays off the debt. An unpaid lien can lead to the legal right to seize and sell your real estate to satisfy the judgment or debt.
Liens can be consensual, statutory or pursuant to a judgment. Your home mortgage is a consensual lien and usually takes priority over any other debts. A licensed contractor
can place a mechanics lien on your property for unpaid construction work. The IRS or State can place a lien on property for unpaid income taxes. The county can place a lien for unpaid real estate taxes. Any creditor who obtains a judgment can place a lien on real estate. Notice requirements vary and are dependent on the type of lien.
A title search will turn up any liens on the property and the owner. Anyone can check with the clerk's office in the county where the property is located for judgments, liens, or lis pendens. If you are planning on selling your home, you should know whether there are liens on the property before starting the process.
If liens are discovered, the next thing to do is contact each judgment holder/creditor and settle the outstanding debt. Occasionally the judgment holder might be willing to negotiate a smaller sum in full satisfaction of the debt. Once paid, the judgment holder or creditor issues a Release of Lien or Satisfaction. It is crucial
that the release is recorded at the county clerk and a copy given to you for record-keeping. Without the Release of Lien or Satisfaction, paying the debt in full alone does not automatically erase the lien from the record.
If a buyer is considering purchasing the property with open liens, they would order a lien and judgment search to determine the exact amount. This often leads to negotiation in the purchase price. The liens would still have to be paid at the closing and all necessary payoff letters obtained from lien and judgment holders. An experienced real estate attorney can advise you on the most effective way to sell property with open liens.

BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D.The United States Navy claims October 13, 1775 as the date of its official establishment, when the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution creating the Continental Navy. However, with the end of the Revolutionary War, the Continental Navy was disbanded. Until the second President, John Adams, American merchant shipping came under threat while in the Mediterranean by Barbary pirates from four North African States. This led to the Naval Act of 1794, which created a permanent standing U.S. Navy.
In 1845, the Naval Academy was founded at old Fort Severn at Annapolis, Maryland by the Chesapeake Bay. In 1861, the American Civil War began and the U.S. Navy fought the small Confederate States Navy with both sailing ships and new revolutionary ironclad ships while forming a blockade that shut down the Confederacy’s civilian coastal shipping. After the Civil War, most of its ships were laid up
in reserve, and by 1878, the Navy was just 6,000 men.
In 1882, the U.S. Navy consisted of many outdated ship designs. Over the next decade, Congress approved building multiple modern steel-hulled armored cruisers and battleships, and by the
91, the Soviet Red Navy fell apart, which made the United States the world’s undisputed naval super power. Nuclear power and ballistic missile technology led to new ship propulsion and weapon systems, which were used in the Nimitz-class aircraft carriers and Ohio-class submarines. By 1978, the number of ships had dwindled to less than 400, many of which were from World War II, which prompted Ronald Reagan to institute a program for a modern 600-ship Navy. This made the U.S. Navy the world’s undisputed naval superpower.
start of the 20th century had moved from twelfth place in 1870 to the fifth place in terms of number of ships. During the 1920s and 1930s, the Navy built several aircraft carriers and battleships. The Navy was drawn into World War II after the Japanese attacked
Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and over the next four years fought many historic battles.
After World War II ended, the U.S. Navy entered the 45 year long Cold War. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990-

Former U.S. Navy admirals who head the U.S. Naval Institute have raised concerns about what they see as the ability to respond to 'aggressive moves' by Iran and China. WarintheUkraine At present Vladimir Putin was perceived on the world stage as a blood thirsty, militaristic maniac whose hunger for power will surely catapult us into World War III. Okay, let’s work with that.
Prior to the war Putin was respected on the world stage as a master statesman, a cutting-edge politician, albeit egotistical, and a nationalist. His major beef with the Ukraine was their dogged pursuit for admission into NATO, a right they certainly have.
Let’s take a look at the Ukraine. Before the Putin invasion, the Ukraine was perceived as a lackluster regime by global leaders with inclinations toward corruption. They elected a leader who prior to taking over had been a standup comic, actor, and drag queen. Putin’s invasion brought world attention to a country of little prominence.
When Donald Trump was
our President, Putin was kept in check, Russia was peaceful, and the tensions between Russia and the Ukraine were there, but minimal at best. Donald Trump would have kept the region stable and eventually negotiated a treaty between the Ukraine and Russia.
Enter the corrupt and bumbling Biden Administration. When Putin realized that the White House had become a hangout for weak and worthless cronies, he began feeling his oats. As Biden showed no decisive leadership or resolve, Putin became emboldened, and invaded the Ukraine. This turned out to be a catastrophic, tragic debacle for the Ukraine and an embarrassment for the overrated Russian Army.
Afghanistan The war in Afghanistan was an armed conflict which lasted from October of 2001 to August of 2021. It began when an international military coalition led by the United States launched an invasion
or eliminated the flow of drug dealers, war lords, and traders in female flesh.
of Afghanistan. It turned out to be the longest war in the history of the United States. It was an endeavor in which the insurrection terrorists were kept in check by Presidents Clinton, Obama, and Trump.
Enter the corrupt Biden Administration The war is over—over because, in what was the worst evacuation ever, Biden, with tail between legs, fled from Afghanistan leaving all our work there over the past twelve years for naught. May I ask when in the history of the
world did any country leave anywhere evacuating the army first, the civilian population of Americans second, and the bulk of our military arsenal behind for the Russian army to seize and direct against the people of the Ukraine.
Immigration The Trump Administration, with its cadre of savvy statesmen, had made great strides in promoting immigration for those entering this country legally. Through enhanced methods at the border, he had minimized
Enter the corrupt, bumbling Biden administration. I think the consensus is that in order to have a country you really have to define it with borders. No borders, no country. Biden and his inept cabinet of dysfunctional losers have ignored that gimme. They have dissolved our borders and totally destroyed our status as a world power. Without a country from which to exert world power, there can be no leadership.
Folks, don’t think we are going to hell-in-a-handbag. The reality is that we are already there. And it’s going to take a Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis, or Rand Paul to set us on a path to recovery. Not to bring you all down but that’s just part of the problem. I still haven’t compared and contrasted the economy, crime, and the environment.
