s summer approaches, there’s a certain buzz in the air. Here in Central Oregon, we perhaps experience the magic more intensely, since our winter tends to linger and overstay its welcome a bit. Now, the days are sunny and warm, and once again our humble town transforms into a river-floating mecca where every day feels like vacation.

What’s not to love about that?!

We’re thrilled to publish the results of the “Best of the Nest!”

Every year, we’re blown away by how many readers turn out to support the businesses that make our community shine – this year brought our largest voter turnout yet. Check out the results and highlights.

Making summer plans? Why not consider attending one or more of the regional music festivals? More and more events are offering dedicated kids’ zones, creating a multi-generational experience for everyone. We’ve got tips to help your family make the most of it.

Summer just wouldn’t be complete without campfires and barbecues, but parents should know, it’s also a season when burn injuries spike among children. Ponderosa Players Take the Stage this Summer with the Broadway Hit Musical, “Guys and Dolls”

his coming June, Ponderosa Players brings the magic of Broadway to Central Oregon with “Guys and Dolls,” featuring a talented cast of 20 young performers, ages 11 to 18. Co-directed by founders Kisky Holwerda and Dash Conant, and choreographed by Holwerda, this production offers a delightful mix of nostalgia and modern flair. This production will be their second at the outdoor venue, The Hayshed, which is located on Hunnell Road.

Set in the bustling streets of 1950s New York, “Guys and Dolls” follows a colorful cast of gamblers, showgirls and straitlaced missionaries as they navigate love, luck, and the occasional illegal dice game. “It’s a classic for a reason,” says Conant, “‘Guys and Dolls’ has been revamped countless times and it’s because it has the whole package: a captivating love story, side-splitting comedy and a long list of songs that will stick in your head in the best way.”

Oregon Zoo Welcomes Baby Tula-Tu

Oregon Ranks Worst in Country for id you know that the Oregon Zoo recently welcomed a new baby Unsheltered Homeless Children elephant to the family? Last month the youngster made her

debut appearance outdoors much to the delight of zoo staff and visitors. Guests can see the new baby, named Tula-Tu, in her indoor habitat, Forest Hall, during the day and may be able to view her outdoors again soon as the weather continues to warm.

Tula-Tu was born February 1 to Asian elephant mother, Rose-Tu, and has quickly become the darling of the zookeepers, as well as a major attraction. Weighing in at approximately 400 pounds, the little cutie follows her mother everywhere she goes.

Recognized worldwide for its elephant care program, which has spanned more than 60 years, the Oregon Zoo supports efforts to help wild elephants and has established a $1 million endowment fund supporting Asian elephants. The zoo collaborates with partners in Borneo to create conservation plans ranging from replanting forests to establishing peaceful Photo relations between courtesy wild elephants and Oregon Zoo native communities.

mong the grim statistics in a recent housing report released by the state of Oregon, one sticks out as the most sobering: Oregon ranks first in the nation for unsheltered homelessness among families with children. While the statistics are striking, homeless advocates say they are likely a vast underestimate of a problem that can be difficult to quantify.

According to the report, “State of the State’s Housing – Oregon Housing and Community Services,” Oregon's rate of unsheltered homelessness among children is 19.9 for every 10,000 kids, which relied on point-in-time survey data, a census count conducted on one night.

The second-ranked state, Hawaii, had a rate less than half that of Oregon, with 7.2 of every 10,000 kids experiencing unsheltered homelessness.

Q A

How has education changed over the years in this country? What have teachers and parents learned regarding how children thrive best in the school environment?

Unfortunately, traditional education hasn’t changed. Public and private schools still focus heavily on academics and don’t focus on the whole human or preparing kids to be future adults.

They lean into the traditional path of “get good grades, go to college, figure it out.”

Our approach is the opposite – we focus on the whole child from the beginning, with physiology, critical thinking, real world projects, tons of free play and of course, academics.

Q A

When it comes to parents enrolling their child, there are many educational options to consider. What are some tips for navigating the process?

Treat your child as an individual and truly ask yourself, “what environment would be BEST for them, not what’s fine or normal.” The reality is, for kids to thrive in all aspects of life, they need an education that mirrors that. Take your time, ask questions, include your kids and stay involved in their education.

Q A

What are your thoughts on our state’s recent education performance metrics?

Candidly, we don’t believe the state should dictate education requirements, especially performance metrics by grade. That motivates the wrong behaviors ­– teachers and districts then become solely focused on academic standards, as those are what afford them additional funding and benefits.

This is also difficult because all kids learn at their own pace. If classrooms are focused on hitting a standard, kids will be held back if they’re ahead of the standard and some will fall behind.

Q A

You are about to open a private school in Bend this fall. What can you tell us about your model or teaching techniques?

Our model is focused on developing the whole child into an independent thinker and leader. We do this by offering blocks vs. classes throughout the day. We start our days with physiology and physical movement before self-paced academics.

Academic goals are set between students, parents and coaches. After physiology and academics, the students and coaches dive into Socratic discussions and free play before lunch. Our afternoons then conclude with real world project-based learning and campus jobs – where students learn about accountability and caring for their community. We don’t have teachers; we have coaches who guide students rather than tell them what to know or learn. We want to create a community of learners and thinkers, not a group of kids who get used to being told what to know and think.

Q A

How will your school address equity gaps, particularly for underserved students?

Great question. We are a private school and do require tuition to attend, at the launch. Longer term, our goal is to start a separate 501c3 nonprofit to raise funds and offer scholarships to those who would greatly benefit from our model but cannot afford it. We have priced our tuition at a rate that is significantly less than some private schools in the area. Also, given we’re a fully private business, we’re open to discussing alternative financing options with families who want their kids to attend. We are willing to get creative, if it’s the right fit.

Family Outdoor Summer Festivals Guide

othing says summer like packing up the cooler and heading out to a festival. Although Central Oregon is famous for hosting some of the best music and special events festivals, with kids in tow, it’s a whole different ball game. Before you go, knowing what to expect and what to bring can ensure your family has the best possible experience.

To begin, choose a festival that is appropriate for families and considers the needs of kids. For example, while the Oregon Gin Festival in June may be fun for adults, it’s probably not the best choice for time with the little ones. In contrast, bluegrass music and folk festivals tend to be geared toward families, with several festivals now having dedicated “kids zone” areas that provide family-friendly entertainment, dancing, special activities and sometimes even child care.

While single day festivals tend to be easier, parents can still enjoy overnight campout-style events, too. The key here is to camp with another family with kids the same age. This creates a shared child care schedule that allows the adults to take turns having solo fun, while the kids enjoy the benefits of a never-ending playdate. This village-style model can be a real lifesaver when you run out of sunscreen or when your favorite band is playing, and you’ve been gifted an hour of kid-free concert time.

On a safety note, every family should have a security plan in place. As soon as you arrive, take your kids on a tour of the entire grounds so they are familiar with their environs and know exactly where their family’s campsite is located. Show them the security and medical tents, too, so they know where to go in case of an emergency. Talk to them about how to avoid getting lost and what to do if that happens, including finding event staff in yellow vests with walkie talkies.

These days, some festivals provide special white wristbands for children where parents write down their contact information in case the child gets lost; if not, don’t be afraid to write your phone number on your child’s arm with a marker. Also, make sure to take a photo of your child when you arrive, just in case you need help from security identifying, as well as locating them.

Often overlooked, factors like parking, walking distances to the campsite and to the music stages can make or break the family experience – especially in the summer heat.

You may need to take multiple trips shuttling gear from the car to your campsite – be prepared for this. Utilize wheeled conveniences like shade wagons, strollers, bicycles and rolling suitcases to get everything from point A to B. Lastly, be sure to talk to your children about the inevitable adult elements they may be exposed to. Have age-appropriate conversations about the possibilities of hearing foul language, smelling cigarette smoke, witnessing alcohol or drug consumption or seeing partial nudity. Parents can’t control what happens in a crowd, but they can prepare their children.

May 23-26, McKenzie River, OR Nestled among the green moss alongside the rushing McKenzie River, lies a little slice of paradise known as Pica Flores Old Growth Sanctuary. Every Memorial Day weekend, the forest is transformed into a thriving micro festival beloved by local families who have been making the annual pilgrimage for over a decade. Featuring mainly local bands and homegrown community workshops, this intimate atmosphere also provides nature-themed kids’ crafts and children’s movie nights inside a yurt, freeing parents up for an evening of dance.

What to know: bring a tasty homemade dish for the giant potluck event on the last night, where families and friends can break bread together and enjoy one another’s offerings.

May 29-June 26, Alpenglow Park, Bend, OR Kicking off the summer season of festivals, Alpenglow Nights is Bend’s newest community music festival, happening every Thursday evening for five weeks at Alpenglow Park in Southeast Bend.

This is a totally free event designed to bring local families together. Expect food carts, kids’ bounce houses and a full lineup of music – everything from indie rock to bluegrass to Irish folk.

Enjoy the big grassy lawn, bring chairs, a blanket and a picnic – or visit the food trucks for an easy dinner option. Adults can enjoy Worthy Brewing cocktails and beer, while the kids are sure to make a beeline to the water park. Also, the series kicks off with the Kids Glow Run on May 29. For $15, kids can participate and even receive a glow stick and snacks.

What to know: Arrive early for easy parking and first dibs on a good picnic spot on the lawn.

CASCADE EQUINOX FESTIVAL

July 11-13, Downtown Bend, OR Bend Summer Festival is a must-see and do event, with free access to three days of great music, art, food and more. Every July, traffic stops in downtown Bend and the area is transformed into a vibrant celebration of the arts, culture and community as live bands perform throughout the day and countless unique vendors showcase hundreds of handmade goods and local flavors.

The Family Play Zone offers kids incredible fun with multiple bounce houses, child-specific vendors and the Kids Summer Sprint race on Saturday at noon.

September 19-21, Deschutes County Fairgrounds, Redmond, OR Round out the summer with an overnight camping event at the Cascade Equinox Festival, located at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds in Redmond.

This immersive arts and entertainment experience offers an incredible variety of food, music, vendors and interactive live art displays that will have your kiddos gasping in awe. Nestled in between the music stages is a healing garden offering acupuncture, yoga and massage, while on-site tent camping in the parking lot creates a pop-up micro-city vibe as everyone openair grills pancakes in the mornings and makes friends with their neighbors.

Festival organizers have cleverly fenced off an entire family area known as the Orbit Stage, where kid-friendly dance parties happen alongside face painters, hair braiders, craft corners and a big bounce house. Parents can feel relaxed knowing their children are safe inside the Orbit gates, with accessible indoor bathrooms located nearby and plenty of festival volunteers working to ensure little ones have fun.

What to know: Due to the popularity of this event, parking can fill quickly. Arrive early and take advantage of the free parking at the Deschutes County Administration building. You can also buy bounce house tickets online in advance to save yourself the line.

FAIRWELL FESTIVAL July 18-19, Deschutes County Fairgrounds, Redmond, OR Country music fans will delight in this two-day festival located at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds in Redmond. Grab your cowboy hat and your best pair of cowgirl boots to show up in style for the plethora of music options spanning folk, blues, country, rock and soul. You can camp in the fairgrounds parking lot or utilize one of the many nearby hotels if you prefer a more private lodging experience.

The festival is open to all ages, with kids eight and under free with an adult ticket. The Family Services Tent provides a safe, private space where nursing mothers can breastfeed or pump, and parents can change a diaper, apply sunscreen or otherwise tend to their children’s needs.

Kid-Friendly Frozen Treats to Make at Home

hese easy-to-make frozen treats are a two-for-one win – providing a fun, engaging kitchen project on the one hand, while enjoying what you made the next day. Made with simple ingredients that you likely have on hand, these recipes require nothing more than mixing, a bit of blending, dipping and freezing – minimal effort for some very yummy results!

EDUCATION Virgin Piña Colada Pops

Yogurt Berry Bark

Makes 4-6 popsicles

Makes 12-24 pieces depending on

Ingredients:

• 1 small can (8 oz.) pineapple rings in juice, drained • 2 tablespoons honey

• ½ can coconut milk (6.75 oz.)

Instructions:

1. Blend all ingredients together,

in a blender or food processor,

to desired consistency. It’s nice to leave a few little pineapple chunks for texture.

2. Pour into popsicle molds and freeze for at least 8 hours.

Chocolate Bananas Makes 12 pops

Ingredients:

• 2 cups plain Greek yogurt • ¼ cup honey

• 1 cup frozen berries (any variety)

Instructions:

1. Line a baking sheet or tray with parchment.

2. Mix half of the honey with the

yogurt in a bowl until combined.

It’s OK to leave a few streaks of honey. Spread the mixture onto the parchment-lined tray with

the back of a spoon to about ¼” thickness.

popsicle stick into each piece of banana. Dip each banana into the melted chocolate, or you

can use a spatula and spread

the chocolate onto each banana piece. Sprinkle immediately with shredded coconut.

2. Place bananas on the baking

sheet and freeze for at least two hours.

3. Store in an airtight container in freezer for up to one week.

Tip to melt chocolate: Place chips in a glass bowl and microwave on medium for 1 minute. Stir, then

continue microwaving, stirring every

honey to a small saucepan for 5 minutes. Puree berries until smooth or to desired

consistency. You may use an

immersion blender or a regular blender. Swirl the puree on top of and into the yogurt using a knife or fork.

4. Freeze for at least four hours.

Break into pieces and wrap

in parchment or place into an

airtight container. Keep in freezer for an easy grab & go snack.

Tropical Cubes Makes 12-16 cubes depending on the size of ice cube trays

Ingredients:

• 1 cup crushed pineapple • 1 cup chopped mango

• 1 can unsweetened coconut milk (you may have leftover milk)

Instructions:

1. Mix pineapple and mango together in a large bowl.

2. Spoon fruit into silicone ice cube tray filling each cube ¾ full. Top each cube of fruit with coconut milk.

3. Freeze overnight. Remove frozen

Makes 4 servings This is an all-fruit, dairy-free, vegan treat with no added sugar that can be made with fresh or frozen fruit. It’s creamy, dreamy and delicious!

Simple Ingredients and Zero Fuss – Perfect for Little Helpers

Ingredients:

• 1 pound fresh (or frozen) strawberries, hulled and coarsely chopped • 2 medium bananas, cut into bite-size chunks

• 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

• ¼ cup ice cold water, as needed

Instructions:

1. Spread strawberries on a small baking sheet. Spread chopped bananas on a separate small baking sheet. Freeze fruit for at least 12 hours.

2. Let strawberries thaw at room temperature for 15 minutes.

Transfer to a food processor or blender and pulse until finely chopped. Add frozen bananas and lemon juice and blend until smooth, adding up to ¼ cup ice water as needed to achieve desired consistency. Scrape down sides of blender as needed.

3. Serve immediately with more fresh berries and banana slices or for a firmer texture, transfer to a container and freeze for an additional 15-30 minutes.

We’ve worked hard to create a space that feels like a true escape – especially for moms. Sometimes you need a strong coffee and other days an ice-cold frosé is calling your name. Or maybe, you just need a moment to sink into the couch while your kids explore the toy basket. With hours from 7am-9pm, we’ve become a go-to gathering place for early risers, mid-day escapes and evening wind-downs, and I think that versatility is what keeps moms coming back.

What has been your biggest challenge owning a coffee shop/ bar?

Balancing the bustling morning coffee crowd with the vibe of an afternoon taproom can definitely be a challenge, but it’s also what makes our space so unique. It’s like running two businesses under one roof: one that runs on 7am lattes and another that kicks into gear after 5pm. We’ve had to stay flexible, think creatively, and really listen to our community to keep both sides thriving. It's a balancing act.

What inspires you to get going in the morning and dive into your workday?

Building community. From the early morning regulars to the parents grabbing a rare moment of peace, every day brings new stories and familiar faces. As a mom myself, I know how meaningful it is to have a place that feels both welcoming and easy, and I feel genuinely honored when people choose our space to gather.

How would you describe your business’s vibe? Are you a family-friendly business?

We’re laid-back, community-driven and fun! There’s a little something for everyone here: good coffee, cold beer, boozy slushees, cozy nooks and yes, even Capri Suns for the littles.

FREE SPIRIT YOGA NINJA PLAY Interview with Rachel Augustine, Co-Owner Will you tell us a little about your kids’ yoga program?

Kids yoga has been at the heart of Free Spirit since we opened in 2019. As a mom, longtime yoga teacher and someone with a background in art and design, I created the program to help kids grow into confident, creative and grounded humans. Our classes for ages 3–13—including Mini Yogi, Kids' Yoga, and Tween Yoga— blend yoga with art, games and social-emotional learning. Mini Yogi includes sweet partner poses with a caregiver, while Kids' and Tween Yoga offer fun sequences and mindfulness practices. Each class supports the mind-body connection and gives kids tools they can carry with them for life.

What sets Free Spirit apart from the rest?

What makes Free Spirit’s yoga program special is our blend of movement, mindfulness and creativity, all in a space centered around kids and families. Our teachers—many with advanced degrees in education or counseling—bring warmth, experience and a deep love for working with children. We also offer private

sessions for neurodivergent kids, making yoga accessible to all.

Much of our programming is inspired by my own children—from creative partner poses to playful themes and calming breathwork that eases anxiety and builds focus.

What are some of your favorite moments as a yoga instructor?

I love the sweet connections between parents and kids—especially during partner poses or savasana, when a hug or kiss says it all.

With older kids, it’s so meaningful when they open up during circle time and feel truly heard. And there’s nothing like seeing a child’s face light up when they finally master a challenging pose!

What's new and exciting for kids at Free Spirit this summer?

We’re turning up the magic in our Kids and Tween Yoga Camps with yoga sequences, outdoor yoga, mindfulness activities and ninja gym playtime—and we’re debuting our very own Free Spirit Sun Salutation song!

Yes, Mudpies and Lullabies has been a mainstay of early childhood education in Bend for almost 30 years! Founded by Anne Williams on the belief that children learn best through play, it continues to lay the foundation for young students through experiential learning. In 2024, the school was purchased by sisters in-law, Alissa & Amy Guthrie, both with long standing ties to the community and decades of experience in education. Having been a parent of the school for the past 20 years, I am committed to keeping the rich traditions of the school alive.

Our school has always been and continues to be an extension of the family. We pride ourselves with fostering a tight knit community that supports one another and believes that together, we are stronger. We encourage our families to become involved – whether it’s as a volunteer in the classroom, a special event helper, a classroom substitute or just by participating in one of our many annual events.

How has early childhood education changed over the years?

How are kids showing up these days?

One of our most treasured events at Mudpies is the Mother’s Day Celebration. Children make paper hats, serve punch out of fancy bowls, use lace tablecloths and write silly anecdotes about their moms. Without a doubt, every mom in our school, past or present, keeps this memory at the top of their list.

Over the past decade, societal priorities have shifted in the field of early childhood education from purely academic readiness toward social-emotional development and executive functioning.

Skills like empathy, self-regulation and collaboration are now seen as essential components to a well-balanced student. Every child arrives at school with varying degrees of academic readiness.

BEND PARK AND RECREATION DISTRICT Interview with Becky Rexford, BPRD Sports Program & Athletic Fields Manager With so many youth sports organizations in Bend, what sets BPRD apart from the rest?

BPRD has been around since 1974 and has made great connections with many, many people in the community. The district has the benefit of being able to serve many kids, creating broader access to sports programs whereas smaller organizations may not have the capacity to do so. Our staff and volunteers also strive to provide an exceptional experience for everyone involved – participants, parents, fans, officials, volunteers and personnel. With high-level customer service at the forefront, collectively, we’ve been able to build programs not just in size, but in quality as well.

What are some of the advantages for kids who get involved in youth sports at an early age?

There are so many! The most obvious benefits are physical well-being and building healthy habits for a lifetime of movement and play. Beyond that, participating in sports helps youth development including emotional regulation, stress management and mental resilience. Sports facilitate critical skillbuilding such as teamwork, leadership, responsible decisionmaking and appreciation and respect for others.

What’s exciting and new at BPRD for 2025?

BPRD has several new sports camp offerings for spring and summer including baseball, archery, rugby and pickleball camps. A new middle school cheerleading program was launched this spring and will be offered again next year. Open for registration now, a new girls’ flag football league begins in September, and we’re really excited about that.

How is BPRD making an impact in our community?

BPRD offers a diverse range of sports programs – including leagues, camps and clinics – to ensure there's something for everyone. Whether you're a seasoned player or trying a sport for the first time, our goal is to create a welcoming environment where everyone feels like they belong and gets to experience the fun and excitement that come from playing sports. BEST YOUTH THEATER:

BEAT CHILDREN’S THEATRE Interview with Bree Beal, Executive Director How long has BEAT been around? Was it difficult to gain a foothold in the community?

BEAT Children's Theatre started in 2006, so we are just about to kick off our 20th season! Our little nonprofit has been growing every year since its inception. We currently serve around 500-600 students per season in our studio, about 1,500-2,000 through community partners and about 5,000 students in our audiences.

Our founders, Mary Kilpatrick and Howard Schor, created a supportive community right away.

What sets BEAT apart from other children’s performing arts organizations?

BEAT is not considered a “production company,” but rather an organization that focuses on education and growth. Putting on plays is just one corner of what we do. The mission of BEAT is to help empower young people by building self-confidence, collaboration and creativity. We hold classes to give kids the opportunity to try theater, to grow acting skills and to learn many of the crafts associated with theatre – set building, costuming, sound and lighting design and more. Beyond our walls, BEAT takes theater workshops to schools and other groups all over Central Oregon! It is our commitment to making sure that students get the advantages of a performing arts education that truly sets us apart.

Could you share some of your most rewarding experiences?

We love when we are doing a multi-week series of theater workshops in a school, and each week when we arrive the kids cheer, “Yay! It's theater day!” We also love the moments when kids we've been working with suddenly take incredible personal growth steps such as feeling confident enough to sing a solo.

Oregon Proposes on

Smart Phones

A proposed bill, HB 2251, could further restrict student cell phone use

proposed bill in the Oregon legislature aims to restrict the use of cell phones in schools statewide. The bipartisan bill is intended to cut down on student distractions, social media incidents and other limitations schools are grappling with in an age of cell phone addiction.

While Central Oregon school districts already have certain policies in place that limit the use of electronic devices during the school day, the proposed bill, House Bill 2251, would strengthen those policies, directing school districts to adopt their own policy that “prohibits the use of student personal electronic devices” in schools.

“This is an opportunity to make sure our kids are focused, but also that our teachers feel backed up, that they are not the enforcers, that this is the rule,” said Rep. Emerson Levy (D-OR 53), a sponsor of the bill.

Local districts, including Bend-La Pine Schools, have begun implementing more restrictive policies over the past three years, according to BLPS Director of Communications Scott Maben. These policies, however, have really ramped up in the last year.

“That’s an acknowledgement that cell phones can be a real source of distraction or disruption to the learning that we're seeing in our classrooms,” Maben said.

While the overarching policy at BLPS states that phones must be off or silent and away during class periods, the rules slightly differ for elementary, middle and high school students.

Up through middle school, the policy requires that phones are away, stored in lockers, from the morning bell to the end of the day.

Sean Keating, principal of Pacific Crest Middle School in Bend, said he’s seen a lot of success with that policy.

“The big thing we're seeing is that students are not concerned so much with social media, especially the harassment that happens on social media here during the school day. If there is social media stuff going on, it's after school, it's not here,” Keating said. “Students can focus more on being kids, being students and learning.”

The high school policy at BLPS is slightly modified – giving students more access outside of class time.

According to Maben, the district allows high school students to access their phones during passing periods and lunch. While the bill, if passed, wouldn’t change much for elementary or middle school students, Maben said the district would most likely need to change its practices at the high school level.

Levy sees local successes with policies as another push for this statewide legislation.

“Several schools have already implemented this, and what I've heard from teachers and administrators is that it feels like school again. We're seeing attendance rise, fights go down,” she said.

While the bill has wide support from teachers and school staff members, some parents are hesitant, citing safety concerns – wanting to be able to reach their children in case of an emergency.

“My daughter will keep her phone with her at all times. I'm not going to rely on the school to notify me if there's an emergency,” parent Dara Capehart commented on a KTVZ Facebook post that asked parents to weigh in about the use of cell phones in schools.

Others like the idea of knowing immediately, from their child, if the school is under lockdown, or experiencing other emergencies.

While Levy sympathizes with this view, she noted that kids will often “flood the lines, with messages during emergencies, sometimes giving false information due to the stressful situation.” Other experts, like Mo Canady, executive director of the National Association of School Resource Officers, say that the hundreds of messages going out to parents during a lockdown or emergency situation can be counterproductive.

“When there is a critical incident going on, we don't need students distracted by their device. We need for them to be locked in on what it is that they've learned to do through appropriate drills and listening to their teacher,” he said.

The bill passed in the Oregon House in early April and was working its way through the Senate as of May 1. While parents and school districts aren’t entirely sure what this bill will look like, when implemented, many are hopeful.

“When the House bill was first proposed, we were so happy,” said Ami Formica, a local mom and co-founder of Well Wired, a local advocacy group aimed at promoting healthier student technology use. “Now, our goal is really to continue to keep that momentum going, because we think it's in the best interest of our kids and families.”

L

ast year, when my family took a road trip to the Hood River Fruit Loop, we were hooked. In fact, after filling our bags with fresh apples, pears and other fresh goodies, the trip became an instant annual tradition.

For those unfamiliar with the Hood River Fruit Loop, it is a scenic 35-mile route running through the Hood River Valley that includes numerous family farms, orchards, wineries and farm stands. It highlights Oregon’s abundant agriculture while offering amazing views of Mount Hood and the surrounding countryside.

Heading from Bend to Hood River, you’ll find yourself on roughly a three-hour road trip. Although families can easily drive it in a day, I would suggest an overnight stay in Hood River or nearby in the Dalles. There is plenty to do in these towns besides the farm experiences, but I’ll save those details for another article.

The farms along the route offer everything from U-pick cherries, apples, pears and other tasty fruits to petting zoos, fresh cheese and farm tours. Below are some of the many stops for kid-friendly activities along the Oregon Fruit Loop.

Draper Girls Country Farm

A family favorite, Draper Girls offers the chance to feed goats, watch other farm animals and enjoy tasty homemade cider. Fresh fruit like apples, pears and peaches adorn the farm and are ready for the picking. An idyllic tree swing awaits those ready to take a moment to relax and admire the majesty of Mt. Hood. Like some of the other farms we visited, the gift shop was more crowded than the orchards! I guess most visitors were like my daughters – they like to shop! I did pick up a few early stocking stuffers for Christmas on my last visit, so that’s a win!

Packer Orchards & Bakery

Packer is famous for its U-pick cherries, peaches and apples, but also for its onsite bakery. Kids will love their famous giant cookies. They have delicious jams, fruit smoothies and soft-serve ice cream made with their own fresh fruit. During April, they host the Tulip Festival, which is on my bucket list for a future visit!

Kiyokawa Family Orchards:

The largest U-pick apple orchard in the valley, this spot boasts over 120 varieties of apples and pears! I was amazed at the incredible range of options with enticing names like Fiesta Red Pippin and Winter Banana. Some of them I wanted to try just because of the name.

Pearl’s Place

Tic Tac Toe with apples, cornhole and other games make this is a great family-friendly farm. You can start with an apple cider tasting to warm the bones on cold mornings, then take the kids on a wagon ride or sit back and admire the beauty of Mount Hood and the surrounding scenery.

Hood River U-Pick Organic

This is a smaller, more relaxed farm with berries, apples and peaches, perfect for younger kids who want an easy picking experience. There are also lots of shady picnic areas for a laidback break or lunch stop.

Mt. View Orchards

This spot might have it all. Perhaps best known for their fresh cider donuts, they have an onsite vineyard, make their own small craft wine, ciders and beer, and host farm-to-table dinners. The large, open picnic areas are perfect for kids who want to run around.

With such an amazing view of Mount Hood in the distance, it’s also a popular setting for weddings. Hot tip – the donuts sell out quickly so get there early!

LOOP The Gorge White House

While parents enjoy a glass of cider, kids can sip on freshsqueezed lemonade and snack on seasonal fruits. In addition to the U-pick fruit, the Gorge also has flower gardens where kids can gather their own sunflowers, dahlias and zinnias.

Speaking of flowers, for a peaceful break from fruit picking, visit one of the flower farms where kids can wander through colorful fields and pick their own bouquets. Hood River Lavender Farms has stunning rows of fragrant lavender, perfect for those Instagram pics and even better for relaxing walks.

TIPS

• The availability of fruit changes throughout the year, so plan your trip based on what’s in season.

• Come prepared with baskets or plenty of cloth grocery bags.

Those apples are heavy!

• Bring a cooler to keep the fruit fresh on the journey home.

• A lot of the low-hanging fruit is still unripe or already picked through. Most farms have tools to borrow that allow you to get the best fruit that may be out of reach.

• Most farms request you not pick up the fruit on the ground. The fallen fruit is part of the organic process of composting.

If you decide to wait until autumn to traverse the loop, there still might be fresh fruit to pick, but it’ll be mostly apples. It’s fun to see the Fruit Loop transform into a fall wonderland with pumpkin patches, hayrides and corn mazes. The fiery red, blazing orange and golden leaves among the evergreens are a spectacular sight, as well.

A few other tips for visiting the Oregon Fruit Loop: • You can only eat so much fruit before it goes bad. Get ready to make butter, jam, pies or other tasty treats that can be stored or shared. Fresh fruit always makes a great gift for friends and family, as well.

• Whether you’re in it for the fresh fruit, the epic mountain views or the chance to just slow down and savor the season, the Hood River Fruit Loop is a tradition well worth starting for your family. Enjoy a full day or a long weekend of farm-fresh fun in Hood River Valley!

What every parent should know about burn first aid

S

ummer fun means time outdoors with sunshine, barbecues and adventures, but it also brings an increased risk of burn injuries.

Between sunburns, holiday fireworks, campfires and grills, accidents can happen when you least expect it. That’s why it’s critical for families to educate themselves on best practices for burn first aid and prepare with a proper medical kit, whether you’re at home or traveling.

No one wants to imagine their child getting hurt, but tragically, young children are especially vulnerable to burn injuries. According to the American Burn Association, “nearly one-quarter of all burn injuries occur in children under the age of 15. In fact, unintentional fire or burn injuries were the 5th leading cause of injury deaths in the United States for children ages 1-4, and the 3rd for those ages 5-9 in 2015.”

If your child does get burned, it’s important to know what to do. Start by assessing the severity of the burn – first, second or third degree. First degree and sometimes small second degree burns can be treated at home, but third degree burns can be life threatening and always require immediate medical attention.

If the skin is pink and a little swollen but not blistered it’s likely a first degree burn, but if it's red, blistered and very painful, it’s probably a second degree burn. If the skin is whitish, charred or translucent, or if the skin is peeling off with minimal or no sensation in the area, assume a third degree burn and make an immediate trip to the ER. The ABA recommends an assessment depending on the location, depth and size of the burn, as well. If the burn is on the face, ears, eyes, hands, feet or genital area, or if it covers an area larger than the size of your palm, seek medical attention.

Assuming you are dealing with a first degree or small second degree burn, begin to stop the burning process by cooling the area with a cool wet compress or running cool (not cold) water for five to ten minutes, until the pain begins to lessen. (Do not apply water for third degree burns, go straight to the hospital for advanced treatment).

Although you may be tempted to apply ice, that may further damage the delicate tissues and is not recommended. It’s also important not to over chill the victim and to stop the cooling process if they start to shiver.

After cooling, be sure to remove any jewelry and clothing around the burned area as soon as possible. These items can irritate the injury and become stuck if the area starts to swell.

Next, wash your hands thoroughly and rinse the burned area with a mild liquid soap. Then cover the burn with a loose sterile gauze, clean, dry cloth, or if you have it, a product like “second skin” – a clear protective bandage commonly

• Burn is on the face, hands, feet, groin, eyes, or joints • Larger than the size of your child’s palm • No improvement in 2–3 days

• Keep the area clean and monitor for infection • Use aloe vera gel or petroleum jelly once cooled • Encourage rest and plenty of fluids

• Signs of infection: swelling, redness, pus, fever, bad smell

Finally, if needed, administer a child-appropriate over-the-

dehydration. Change the dressings regularly and continue to monitor the burn closely for signs of infection.

Usually, small, minor burns will heal within a couple of days

without scarring. Apply aloe vera gel during the healing process, or alternately, petroleum jelly, calamine lotion or any other

so can expose the wound to bacteria and lead to infection. Lastly, make sure your child gets plenty of rest during the recovery process, as burns often cause fatigue.

Importantly, you should seek follow-up medical attention if

there are no signs of healing within two to three days, if there is a persistent fever or increased pain, if there is redness or swelling that extends beyond the border of the burn, or visible skin

entral Oregon is blessed with numerous beautiful, healthy bodies of water, many of which are world renown fishing spots. Our rivers like the Deschutes, Crooked, Metolius and the McKenzie, not to mention over 150 lakes, streams and ponds, all have their own distinct ecosystem.

Introducing children to the great outdoors and these ecosystems opens up a whole new world to them. One exciting way to get the kids outside and foster an appreciation for nature is by teaching them to fish. After all, nothing quite compares to the thrill of casting a line and catching one of those slippery little creatures!

Whether relaxing on the bank of a small pond or battling the toughest of trout in a gushing river, any of us who enjoy fishing know that patience and perseverance are a necessity. Likewise, not just a fun weekend activity, fishing can be a skill builder for kids. Hand and eye coordination, concentration, mindfulness, self-reliance, knot-tying, and much more develop when engaging in the sport.

How to begin?

To get them started, try one of the local ponds or head to a calm portion of the Deschutes.

Bend Pine Nursery Pond located in Pine Nursery Park is open to all ages. The pond is large, quiet, relaxing, and on a beautiful day, the surrounding trees and sky can be seen reflecting on the water.

Likewise, in Shevlin Park near Aspen Hall, there is a small, unintimidating pond – Shevlin Pond. It is open only to ages 17 and under. On any given warm-weather day, you’ll see the little ones gathered around the water gleefully trying to catch a fish.

Both ponds have a current limit of two fish per day with an eight-inch minimum length. Of course, if you catch and release, you can catch as many as you want!

Multiple spots within the Bend city limits allow fishing on the Deschutes River – at Farewell Bend, Sawyer and Riley Rach Reserve, to name a few locations. Check the Bend Park and Recreation website for a longer list of areas on the river that are open to the public.

With a little basic fishing experience under their belts, when the kids are ready to make the leap into fly fishing, the Old Mill District has a fly-casting course, the first permanent one of its kind in North America. The five-hole course spread out around the Mill is great for beginners, and even later when they become intermediate or expert casters. Nearby, at the Confluence Fly Shop, pick up a map and a score card. There, they also offer classes and plenty of gear to prepare anglers for catching that prized whopper!

Venturing a bit outside of Bend to the Prineville Reservoir, families can make a fun day or weekend trip with the opportunity to fish, camp, swim or gaze at the night sky. In fact, the state park was recently designated as an official international dark sky area.

Battle the largemouth bass during the day and relax under the stars at night.

Wikiup Reservoir is another spot to get in some good fishing.

An amazing state record was set there when a brown trout caught opening day of 1998 weighed in at over 26 pounds! The area is also known for a large variety of waterfowl and shorebirds for those who like birdwatching.

Most importantly, don’t forget about the fishing license! For all the previously mentioned locations, permits are needed for everyone. For youth aged 12 to 17, they’ll need a juvenile license – available at most sporting goods and fishing shops.

Some kids don’t quite have the patience for fishing but still love to see the fish in action. Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery, located near the clear waters of the Metolius River, serves as a place to incubate and rear rainbow trout and kokanee salmon. When the time comes, the fish are released into the local rivers. Other types of fish are also raised at the hatchery as part of the reintroduction program in the upper Deschutes Basin.

Whether relaxing on the bank of a small pond or battling the toughest of trout in a gushing river, any of us who enjoy fishing know that patience and perseverance are a necessity.

The hatchery makes a great family trip. For only a quarter – yes, you are reading this correctly- anyone can feed the fish in the pond or watch them swim wildly around in one of the many tanks.

Plus, if your kids change their minds and decide they want to fish, the Metolius River is right there. There’s a wonderful 6.2-mile loop trail along the banks and many opportunities to see other wildlife.

Nearby Camp Sherman General Store, first opened in 1918, carries flshing supplies and is worth the visit for its historical significance.

As you can see, there is no shortage of fishing spots around Bend. Whether it’s teaching kids a variety of skills or instilling in them an appreciation for nature, water is life, and sometimes it’s just fun to catch what’s in it!

Simple Sewing with Kids

s a rule, most kids love arts and crafts, especially those that encourage maximum creativity! Simple projects that require kids to slow down and focus have multiple benefits – including decision-making, confidence-building and math development, to name a few. If you learned to sew as a child, you probably still know enough to sew on a button or repair a small hole, or at least we hope you do!

Here are a couple of easy sewing activities to share with your kids.

Stuffing (cotton balls or pillow filling)

Felt (2 pieces per plushie)

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Draw a simple animal shape- such as a fish or a bunny – on the piece of paper.

2. Cut out the design.

3. Stack the two pieces of felt on top of one another and then trace around the paper design, transferring the animal shape onto the felt.

4. Cut out the animal shape from both pieces of felt.

5. Using a whip stitch or running stitch, sew around the shape, leaving a one-inch portion at the bottom open for stuffing.

Tip: Use large, even stitches. It doesn’t have to be perfect!

6. Stuff the plushie by gently pushing in the stuffing to make the form soft and puffy.

7. Once stuffed, finish the plushie by sewing along the open area – completely closing it.

8. Decorate! Add noses, eyes or any accessories with fabric glue or sewing.

Tips by Age: Pre-cut the felt shapes for younger children. For older children, let them design and draw their own vision for the plushie.

They may enjoy making a full-sized plushie, too!

4. Sew around the fold to make a space for the drawstring.

Leave a 1-inch gap.

5. Attach the safety pin to one end of your ribbon or cord.

6. Use the pin to guide the string through the casing.

9. Flip the bag inside out—and it’s done!
