n 2020, Oregon voters put a lot of stock in Measure 110 — the groundbreaking citizen initiative that made the state the first in the nation to decriminalize user amounts of drugs. The decriminalization portion of Measure 110 was rolled back by the legislature in 2024 — but the part of Measure 110 that took cannabis revenue and turned it into drug treatment dollars remained.

Since then, the Oregon Secretary of State’s Audits Division has done three audits of the program, with some of the same problems emerging each time.

Among other issues, auditors allege that frequent tinkering by the legislature and the Oregon Health Authority are making success hard to achieve.

“For a problem that is decades in the making, it will likely take decades of intentional effort to correct,” auditors wrote. “Instead, the pattern of annual revisions has undermined confidence in the program’s direction and hindered the development of long-term strategies.”

Each audit has uncovered challenges at OHA around a lack of overall strategy, inadequate data around the effectiveness of treatment programs, and — an issue since resolved — around an ineffective hotline that wasted taxpayers’ money. The most recent audit, released in December, also criticized frequently changing laws at the legislative level and inconsistent rules among counties’ deflection programs — the program put in place in 2024 to direct people into treatment rather than jail for drug offenses.

OHA agreed with three of the audit’s recommendations, saying it has already put a project management structure in place, as well as new data collection programs. It disagreed with three other recommendations, mostly around retrospective data collection. While it’s fair for auditors to want numbers that show whether a program is working, this particular program went into effect during the pandemic, OHA reminded auditors, which makes them impossible years to use to compare trends.

In its quest to end its reputation as one of the worst-performing states when it comes to drug treatment, Oregon leaders are rightly evaluating the process and tinkering with the recipe.

Too much money is on the line — and too many lives, especially in the age of fentanyl — to do anything else. But it’s a complicated process and involves a massive state agency, legislators, behavioral health professionals and law enforcement officials from every corner of the state, among others.

The audit is a deep read about the state of state-sponsored drug treatment — but here are some key takeaways.

-The pandemic years messed up data. We don’t have good baseline data about overdoses, drug treatment and more for the years 2019-2023, and that means we can’t adequately assess how the state did on its goals for those years.

If auditors want to be able to compare treatment rates over time to assess the efficacy of the program, for better or worse, they’ll have to start with the year 2024, OHA said. Not helpful, but that seems like it’s the reality.

-A patchwork of enforcement and participation on deflection programs across Oregon counties offers the opposite of justice — especially when cops and district attorneys have discretion about who to send to deflection. When legislators in 2024 changed the laws so that people could “deflect” into a treatment program rather than the courts after a drug possession charge, they gave counties “local control” about whether (and how) to implement deflection.

That sounded like a way to appease more conservative counties — but with some counties not doing deflection at all, resulting in an uneven form of justice.

People aren’t getting equal treatment in one county compared to another, and given that a major thrust of Measure 110 was to address racial disparities in policing, that’s not OK. -Frequent changes in leadership and legislation can be difficult for a large agency — that works in two-year budget cycles — to adapt to… but change in the program is still needed. While the Secretary of State’s audit warned that frequent changes in legislation or programs could lead to failure, there’s no getting around the fact that things need tinkering. Specifically, changes need to happen to better align the various counties around the notion of deflection — and cops need more training about how to handle deflection cases.

Measure 110 was more than just legalizing drugs. A big part of it was ensuring access to treatment for a state that experiences among the highest rates of substance use disorders in the nation.

While the recent audit doesn’t paint a rosy picture of how we’re doing, it does point to the fact that Oregon’s leadership isn’t giving up on the effort.

Asking hard questions and demanding better results is the only way out of this mess .

This Source news article provides Andres Portela the opportunity he wasn’t given by consultant Amy Ahrendt in her $18,685 investigation. Source reporter Peter Madsen and editors provided the balance and gave Mr. Portela the ink to personally address some of the accusations lodged against him in the investigation. Thanks go to the Source.

Purportedly to look into Mr. Portela’s allegations of racist behavior in Bend City Hall, the Ahrendt investigation, instead, looks more like the typical anti-whistleblower hit piece you would expect from any powerful and well-funded institution.

The initial 10 pages serve as a hairsplitting treatise meant to exonerate City Manager Eric King. (Complete with expressions of adoration for Mr. King from his underlings in a burst of emotion reminiscent of a Trump cabinet meeting.) The remaining 3 pages of the report actually purport to deal with Portela’s allegations, but without evidence and with plenty of hearsay.

I believe there is more to the story. Unfortunately, the headline of the Source article parrots language from the investigation and validates the Ahrendt report as the final say on what happened. I believe there is more to the story. I base my misgivings on years-long personal opposition to numerous City Hall policies and actions. I am, as well, personally referenced in this report.

Ms. Ahrendt begins her opus by quibbling over Mr. Portela’s version of the timeline for the Sept. 16 meeting with City manager Eric King That and other inconsistencies she cites include such trivial matters as who stood where during the meeting and the circumstances leading up to a hug between the 2 men (initiated by Mr. Portela). Petty hairsplitting like this leads Ms. Ahrendt to discredit the entirety of Mr. Portela’s narrative.

But is what good for the goose good for the gander?

On page 4 Ms. Ahrendt writes that at the time of his Sept. 16 meeting with Mr. Portela, Mr. King had been made aware of a decision by the city attorney to investigate allegations of racism at City Hall brought by Portela.

However, on page 6 she writes, “King was apparently unaware” of this decision.

To be sure, this is a trivial inconsistency on her part in her report (I won’t say “sloppiness”). Using her standards is this cause for throwing into doubt everything she subsequently writes?

(As someone personally on the periphery of one of the incidents cited

by Ms. Ahrendt, I can say with some certainty that Eric King’s version of what happened in this case is largely inaccurate. Sadly, Ms. Ahrendt chose to interview only City Hall insiders, whose careers depend on the good will of their boss, Eric King. Why not a chat with, for example, the chair of the Human Rights and equity Commission (HREC), who in OPB reporting called Andres Portela’s

resignation “a big disappointment” and went on to say, “He is such an integral part of the life of DEI here in the city, and I was very surprised”? Ms. Ahrendt could have inquired, as well, into the circumstances leading to the resignations of 2 previous directors in the city’s civil rights departments.)

So, 10 pages of investigation seemingly designed to exonerate Eric King from all charges of misconduct—followed by 3 pages of relentless evidence-free attacks on Mr. Portela’s character by co-workers, instead of dealing directly with the allegations he raises.

Some of these same City Hall staffers, as FOIA documents attest, participated in a crudely conducted pile-on to discredit and oust an HREC member in the spring of 2024.

I can cite numerous incidents of other definitely racist and inequitable Bend City Hall conduct over the years. Along with my efforts, others have attempted to call into question these lapses in honorable government and abuse of power.

But, in no sense has City Hall ever had to answer for its conduct. For now I will simply satisfy myself by calling attention to this latest example.

In the Dec. 18 OPB report on the consultant’s investigation, Mr. Portela writes, “This investigation wasn’t for me.

It was to make leadership feel absolved.”

SIGNAGE FOR DEER ON ROADWAYS

There was another baby deer dead on Century Drive — killed by a car

sometime in the night or in the early morning hours. This stretch of road, between the Athletic Club and Tetherow, is a known deer crossing, which sees many fatalities every year. Caring citizens have painted homemade signs trying to encourage drivers to slow down and be aware. One individual even purchased small deer-crossing signs and posted them along the stretch. Recently, all these signs were removed (I’m assuming by the city). Why? I travel a lot to many cities and states in the U.S. While I’m a careful driver by choice, I still notice and appreciate “watch for wildlife” signs. Why are there so few of these signs in Bend? Bend is a tourist town. Locals may be aware of areas frequented by deer, but out-of-towners and even locals just heading to the mountain, may be unaware. A clear, flashing “Give Deer a Brake” sign might wake drivers up to look around and slow down a bit.

I am not alone in my concern for wildlife. Most of us come to Bend because we love the outdoors and all its inhabitants. Can’t we get together, educate, post signs, and protect these vulnerable four-footed citizens?

Third Phase of Redmond’s Eastside Arterial Project Begins Construction begins next week on the third phase of Redmond’s Eastside Arterial Project which involves constructing a new roundabout at Veterans Way and Airport Way. That will lead to multiple road closures. On Monday, Jan. 5, SW Lake Road will close near the intersection of Veterans Way through Wednesday. In March, part of SE Veterans Way will be closed for 10 weeks from SW Lake to SE Airport Way. The roundabout is expected to be finished next fall.

t’s been a busy year for the Bend City Council. An expanded meeting schedule and a focus on strategy have brought forth ambitious and community-driven goals, setting out how we’ll continue to make d en progress for our local community. And in fB 2025, we’ve been doing it all in the midst of chaos and confusion at the federal level.

Here are some highlights: As Bend keeps growing, making sure everyone has a home they can afford is increasingly important. Over the last year, the City of Bend supported the completion of 140 affordable housing units, with many more in the pipeline for future years. Our code changes and incentives have increased the share of multifamily homes in Bend, which resulted in rents flattening for tenants. And since the start of 2025, the City has supported the addition of 25 new safe parking spaces, which means an increase of 36 beds for people who need a place to take their first step out of homelessness. This work remains a priority as we continue to explore policy options and incentives that will not only bring housing, but also neighborhood commercial hubs and other amenities that create truly connected communities.

This past year also saw lots of projects to bring Bend’s roads into alignment with the vision of the Transportation Go Bond, a voter-approved plan for improving our transportation system. We’ve combined efforts across departments to upgrade our water and sewer systems wherever possible, improve safety and ensure our infrastructure will function and last for our community. Future projects to expand pinch points, like at the Reed Market/Bond

Roundabout, while also enhancing connections at crossings like Hawthorne, Greenwood, and Franklin for people biking and walking, will help us get to our goal of a safer system that works better for everyone.

We know businesses are facing tough times due to economic uncertainty and the high cost of living for employees. By prioritizing and expanding our Economic Development department at the City, we are working to help businesses stay and grow here, including a comprehensive economic strategy plan that Council will hear about in February. Staff will bring us ideas for retention and growth for both small and large companies, sharing how we can connect businesses with resources to help them navigate challenges and create opportunities for expansion.

Council’s continued support of our public safety agencies included an emphasis on wildfire preparedness. Our new Deputy Fire Marshal of Wildfire Preparedness will continue her work educating people about the proper steps to stay safe and empowering our community to become more resilient and prepared for wildfire emergencies. In 2025, we completed over 850 Wildfire Risk Assessments for residents, over eight times more than the average from past years.

Thank you to all our community partners, neighbors, and leaders at the local, County, and State level who have given feedback and worked with the Council to advance our initiatives designed to keep Bend moving forward. I look forward to another productive year of progress at the City in 2026.

wo weeks ago, I was gathered with a few dozen other folks from the Sisters area for the last Community Builders meeting of the year. This monthly event is sponsored by Citizens 4 Community, our homegrown nonprofit that promotes civility and civic engagement.

The goal of the get-together is to give attendees the chance to share the needs, opportunities, rs ste Si or successes of their respective nonprofit, agency, business, or just themselves.

As particpants shared their ideas and asks, I was yet again awash in the pure, unfiltered essence of what makes Sisters tick — partnerships. Whether it was someone looking for a better storage facility for pet food donations, another asking for board members for their growing nonprofit, or the number of individuals just there to listen and seek opportunities to help. The air was filled with phrases like “call me,” “I know someone that could help you,” and “let’s talk soon.”

While we’ve seen growth over the last decade, Sisters is still a small town (we have only 3% the population of Bend). No single government agency, business, or nonprofit is large enough to create measurable success without working in partnership with others. Sorry to get cliché, but teamwork really does make the dream work.

And when you’re sitting in a room full of can-do attitude, you can’t help but feel like anything is possible.

However, Sisters is still like every community across Central Oregon in that we struggle with the same problems as our larger neighbors. There’s not enough housing, especially for our homeless, low income, and workforce of

A 62-acre pile burning project in the north area of Shevlin Park is scheduled to begin Monday, Jan. 5. The parking area along Shevlin Park road east of Aspen Hall will be closed for about five days. Other areas of the park will remain open. In 2022, the Bend Park & Recreation District’s natural resources team removed hazardous fuels along the forested slope of Tumalo Creek, creating piles of slash material. residents. Our only assisted living facility evicted all the Medicaid residents and converted to a “senior living” model where tenants are on their own to hire medical assistance. Our rural location makes us acutely vulnerable to wildfires and winter storms and the insurance problems that come with the risk. And our public agencies and nonprofits are having staffing and grant funding pulled out from under them seemingly on a daily basis.

With these daunting challenges, it’s too darn easy to look toward 2026 with doubt. Yet, this is the town that hosts fan-favorite events like the Sisters Folk Festival, Sisters Rodeo, and the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, all of which went off without a hitch in 2025 thanks to a copious number of volunteers, local sponsors, and partnerships. The City of Sisters also completed a number of projects this year including opening Gateway Park Mobility Hub — a multi-use facility hosting a transit center, adopting new codes geared toward protecting the community from wildfire, and infrastructure upgrades to the water and wastewater system that will benefit current and future residents and businesses.

None of us entering 2026 are blind to the challenges we currently face and those that could fall into our laps at any time. However, we share a deep understanding that we are stronger together thanks to countless partnerships, and that’s all I need to be excited about the coming year. aughter, peace and playfulness filled the room on NE Division Street in Bend that serves three very different purposes. Most of the time, it’s a chapel for daily devotions. Lately, it’s been a pre-Christmas workshop — a lively craft space buzzing with sewing machines, colorful fabric, gingerbread, icing, candies and jovial conversation.

By night, it transforms into a bunkroom for men rebuilding their lives at Shepherd’s House Men’s Recovery Center.

Shepherd’s House is part of a broader network of recovery and support facilities serving men and women in Bend and Redmond. At the heart of this room is the Giveback Quilt Project, administered by Cat Wallace, whose warmth and humor weave both fabric and people into something beautiful.

“It’s like herding cats,” Wallace jokes as she sorts quilt patches alongside residents focused intently on their sewing machines.

Wallace’s journey to Shepherd’s House is deeply personal. She arrived in Bend in 2020 seeking safety and healing after leaving Southern California. What began as volunteering quickly turned into a paid role, and she is now the Men’s Program Administrator. Her goal is to organize regular programs that reintroduce playfulness and finding a purpose in life again for residents.

“I came in through the back door,” Wallace says quietly. “I needed a lot of healing in my heart and soul.”

That healing now radiates outward through projects like the Giveback Quilt. This holiday season, residents designed and stitched quilt squares assembled into a single quilt — a heartfelt gift for longtime volunteer Diane Miles, who is returning to the United Kingdom after five years of service.

The quilt tells a story. Its newsprint-patterned backing nods to Mile’s English roots and the tradition of wrapping fish and chips in newspaper. She

served meals several days a week and is a beloved fixture at Shepherd’s House.

For the men sewing the quilt, the project is about more than fabric — it’s about community. One resident spent more than 14 years in prison. Another explains, “If it weren’t for this place, I’d probably be bouncing between the Lighthouse, addiction on the street, or jail.”

Ron, sober for nine months, shares how a cancer diagnosis led to relapse, foreclosure and the loss of his marriage. Entering the recovery program changed everything.

“This place makes me accountable,” he says. “My goal is to show my kids I have a purpose again.”

Residents also joined a gingerbread house competition, adding holiday fun to serious healing work. Resident Chad earned “Most Detailed.” Another resident, Brandon, earned “Most Unique” for his creation that was gifted to Nancy P's Bakery. The houses were delivered to local supporters including the Franklin Shelter, Albertson’s, Whole Foods, and Ronald McDonald House.

he year 2025 was a bit of a whirlwind in Redmond.

It seemed every week a new building or two was either starting in construction or being completed. New businesses opened their doors and the city grew both in population and, unfortunately, traffic congestion. The investment into community on the public and nonprofit side was impressive. A new police station and a new library were completed. In construction are the new Park and Recreation Center as well as the expansion of the Airport terminal and the new Wetlands project to replace our aging sewer plant. The new cancer center at St. Charles will be a game changer for those battling the affliction in Northern Deschutes County as well as Jefferson and Crook Counties.

The City is also tackling our increased traffic with new improvements such as the Eastside arterial which will connect NE Redmond and SE Redmond through the old Juniper golf course, the reconstruction of Reservoir Drive and the new roundabout at Badger and Canal. We continue to push ODOT to invest in S. Highway 97 and Highway 126 but with very little success to date.

The City partnered with Deschutes County and CORE 3 to build critical infrastructure for our Eastside campus located north of the Forest Service center at the airport. This year, 21st Street was constructed for access from Highway 126. This campus will include the CORE 3 site (a resiliency center and training facility for law enforcement and fire), the OASIS village and a

managed camp to house our homeless in safe locations as well as the proposed transitional facility to be constructed and operated by Mountain View Community.

Regarding downtown, we were very happy to see the opening of the Dry Canyon Art Center and welcomed a great new mural at Sixth and Black Butte. We also helped with projects that improved two blighted properties downtown with the NOVA project at the old Squire Motel and new apartments at Fifth and Fir. The city, in partnership with the Redmond School District, initiated water conservation projects in our parks, schools and open areas adjacent to Highway 126, 97 and Canal Boulevard. The School District removed the turf fields at both Redmond and Ridgeview.

These projects, both city and school district, will save about 15 million gallons of water each year.

Finally, the city launched a new application on its website. This is the Redmond Mapping Hub that is designed to enhance public access to vital information on public infrastructure, permits and zoning. This will be a useful tool for citizens to get up to date information quickly without having to wait in line either in person or on the phone.

As we look ahead to 2026, there will be more improvements within our community, and assuming the economy holds, additional opportunities to find family wage jobs. We do hope the best unfolds for you and your families in the upcoming year.

Project Censored’s List of Buried Stories Hits Half-Century Mark Topics include ICE, water, indigenous communities, Meta and big tech

alf a century ago, Peter Jensen launched Project Censored, in part as a response to how the Watergate break-in was covered. Richard Nixon didn’t censor the initial reporting, but he didn’t have to. The press simply didn’t cover it with any serious scrutiny until well after Nixon was elected. The story didn’t reach the American people when it mattered most — when they could have done something about it directly themselves, before they went to the polls in November 1972.

Reflecting this, Jensen saw censorship as working differently in a democracy than in a dictatorship. He defined it as “the suppression of information, whether purposeful or not, by any method — including bias, omission, under-reporting, or self-censorship — that prevents the public from fully knowing what is happening in society.”

That happened with Watergate, though the truth belatedly came out.

And an echo of the same sort of thing happened just as I was writing this half a century later. Six members of Congress who had served in the military or the CIA released a video accurately informing those serving, as they had, that they have the right—and in some cases the duty—to refuse unlawful or unconstitutional orders. President Trump responded on social media by falsely claiming their video message was “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH,” but the New York Times relegated the story to page 16, with a headline that didn’t mention Trump’s call for their execution.

“No wonder Trump thinks he can get away with anything,” said Mark Jacob,

a former top editor at both the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune.

This was only a faint echo of what happened with Watergate—especially given the Times’ diminished gate-keeping role. But those echoes are everywhere around us, every day.

That same dynamic of suppression of information by under-reporting and self-censorship is constantly at play, with the same consequence of preventing the public from fully knowing what’s happening in society—particularly in time to do something about it.

For half a century now, Project Censored has been bringing these omissions to light, and while each story highlights a particular omission, they are often complex and interrelated to each other. There’s a perfect example in this year’s top censored story—”ICE Solicits Social Media Surveillance Contracts to Identify Critics.” Government spying on, suppressing, and even criminalizing its critics goes back at least to World War I as a systematic endeavor, but new elements have intertwined with it over time. Racial targeting, private contracting, and omnipresent surveillance technology are all present in this most recent example, and are routinely censored in other settings as well.

This is the deeper point of Project Censored’s list: That it’s not just about this or that suppressed and under-reported story, it’s about a whole different way of seeing the world if that systemic censoring were stripped away. Here, then, is Project Censored’s half-century anniversary list, so you can see for yourself what that means.

1. ICE Solicits Social Media Surveillance Contracts to Identify Critics In February 2025, Techdirt’s Tim Cushing reported on Sam Biddle’s Intercept investigation into a new ICE bid solicitation seeking private contractors to “monitor and locate ‘negative’ social media discussion” about the agency. The request, also covered by the Independent, appeared as the agency prepared for a more aggressive role under the returning Trump administration. ICE’s plan, Biddle wrote, could pull “people who simply criticize ICE online” into its surveillance dragnet.

Biddle noted the solicitation was “nearly identical” to a 2020 request that resulted in a $5.5 million contract with Barbaricum, a Washington-based defense and intelligence firm. But the new version, arriving amid ramped-up enforcement rhetoric, signaled a broader threat. Cushing observed that ICE justified the program by citing increased risks — yet provided no evidence.

The scope of potential targets is massive. Social media criticisms of ICE number in the millions, but contractors would be required to assess users’ “proclivity for violence” using “social and behavioral sciences” and “psychological profiles.” After scraping personal details— Social Security numbers, addresses, affiliations—contractors would deliver ICE dossiers containing photos, partial legal names, birth dates, education or work ties, and identified family members. The request also sought facial recognition tools capable of scanning the internet for additional information tied to a subject.

Although framed as a safety measure for ICE employees, Cushing wrote that the document “makes it clear ICE is looking for tech that allows it to monitor people simply because they don’t like ICE.” The First Amendment implications, he added, are unmistakable: the government should not monitor social media users to quantify criticism, especially when it conflates negativity with threats.

ICE’s digital surveillance ambitions are not new. Past investigations revealed fake ICE social-media profiles, entrapment schemes, and systems designed to flag “derogatory” posts. While Forbes and the New York Times have addressed ICE’s tech investments targeting immigrants, no corporate outlet has covered this planned monitoring of ICE critics.

2. Water Scarcity Threatens 27 Million People in the United States Nearly 30 million people in the U.S. live in areas with limited water supplies, Carey Gillam reported for The New Lede in January 2025. The finding comes from a first-ofits-kind U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) study assessing national water availability from 2010 to 2020, including quality concerns. With climate change worsening droughts, floods, and contamination, the crisis is expected to deepen. Project Censored also highlighted two ongoing threats: saltwater intrusion and PFAS “forever chemicals,” linked to cancers, liver disease, and birth defects.

USGS Director David Applegate warned of “increasing challenges to this vital resource,” noting that socially vulnerable communities face the greatest risks. Gillam reported widespread pollution in waterways across the Midwest and High Plains tied largely to industrial agriculture runoff. USGS found “substantial areas” of major aquifers — supplying one-third of public drinking water — contaminated

3. Indigenous Communities in the U.S. Underfunded and Exploited by Federal and State Governments A series of 2024— 25 investigations

by ProPublica, High Country News, and Grist revealed how federal and state governments continue to underfund and exploit Indigenous communities — coverage largely ignored by corporate media. Matt Krupnick (ProPublica) documented the chronic underfunding of tribal colleges, institutions created in the 1970s to serve Native students harmed by generations of violence, dispossession, and cultural erasure. Although Congress set funding at $8,000 per tribal student in 1978, adjusted annually for inflation, the government has never met its obligation. Since 2010, per-student funding ranged from $5,235 to just under $8,700 — far below the roughly $40,000 it would be if federal commitments had been honored—totaling a $250 million shortfall. Under the Trump administration, conditions worsened as at least $7 million in USDA grants for tribal colleges were suspended.

Meanwhile, a joint High Country News/Grist investigation showed how states profit from “trust lands” located inside reservations. These lands, often seized during the 1887 Dawes Act Allotment Era, generate millions through grazing, logging, mining, and oil and gas production—funding state universities, prisons, hospitals, and schools. Earlier reporting traced this system to the 1862 Morrill Act, which granted nearly 11 million acres taken from nearly 250 tribes to states to build land-grant universities.

The new investigation mapped 1.6 million acres of state-managed trust lands within 83 reservations across 10 states, revealing how state control undermines tribal sovereignty and jurisdiction. In some cases, tribes must lease back what was once their own land—an estimated 58,000 acres—paying the state for agricultural or grazing use. One notable exception is the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes in Montana, who secured the return of nearly 30,000 acres through a 2020 waterrights settlement.

Corporate media coverage of these injustices remained minimal, limited mostly to stories about Trump-era layoffs that failed to address the deeper, long-term history of governmental neglect.

4. Meta Undertakes “Sweeping Crackdown” of Facebook and Instagram Posts at Israel’s Request Since Oct 7, 2023, Meta has executed a massive censorship campaign on Facebook and Instagram, removing or suppressing posts critical of Israel or supportive of Palestinians, Drop Site News reported in April 2025. The report called it “the largest mass censorship operation in modern history,” based on internal Meta data provided by whistleblowers and confirmed by multiple sources inside the company.

Meta reportedly complied with 94% of takedown requests from Israel — the single largest originator of content removals worldwide — affecting an estimated 38.8 million posts. While most requests were classified under “terrorism” or “violence and incitement,” the complaints all used identical language regardless of the content, linking to an average of 15 posts each without describing the posts themselves.

The campaign disproportionately targets users from Arab and Muslim-majority nations but has a global reach, affecting posts in over 60 countries. Drop Site News warned that Meta’s AI moderation tools are being trained on these takedowns, potentially embedding this censorship into future automated content decisions.

Project Censored noted that the Council on American-Islamic Relations condemned Meta’s actions, stating, “Meta must stop censoring criticism of the Israeli government under the guise of combating antisemitism, and Meta must stop training artificial intelligence tools to do so.” The report also cited the Committee to Protect Journalists’ findings that Israel controls coverage of its military operations.

Although independent outlets such as ZNetwork and Jewish Voice for Labour republished the Drop Site News report, no major U.S. newspapers or broadcast outlets had covered the story as of July 2025. Meta shows no signs of ending the censorship initiative, leaving critics concerned about the implications for free expression and the global reach of government-directed social media moderation.

5. Big Tech Sows Policy Chaos to Undermine Data Privacy Protections Big Tech companies are actively attempting to undermine consumer data privacy laws, using tactics reminiscent of Big Tobacco in the 1990s, Project Censored reports.

Jake Snow documented this in Tech Policy Press and the ACLU of Northern California in October 2024.

Snow outlined a three-step strategy. Step one: “Respond to a PR crisis with a flood of deceptive bills.” Just as tobacco promoted “smoking sections” to weaken bans, Big Tech floods Congress with industry-backed laws that replace meaningful privacy protections with weak alternatives. Snow cites a 2021 Virginia law drafted by an Amazon lobbyist as “just what Big Tech wants.”

Step two: Complain about the “patchwork” of state laws, portraying diverse regulations as chaotic or unworkable. Tobacco did this in the 1990s; today, tech lobbyists repeat it, even creating websites like United for Privacy: Ending the Privacy Patchwork.

Step three: Use federal preemption to erase state laws and block stronger local legislation. While federal law could set a floor — like the federal minimum wage — Big Tech pushes it as a ceiling, limiting grassroots influence. Snow notes that states and cities historically drive real change. California, for example, enshrined a privacy right in its 1972 constitution, offering protections against modern abuses. Once state legislatures are sealed off, communities with limited access to Congress lose power.

These tactics are not hypothetical. The House version of Trump’s controversial “Big Beautiful Bill” included a provision shielding tech companies from state lawsuits for a decade over negligence, privacy violations, or AI misuse. Though removed by the Senate, similar efforts are expected.

Project Censored noted that while outlets like the New York Times and Time have reported aspects of Big Tech lobbying, no corporate coverage has fully captured the scale, coordination, or historical parallels Snow identified—leaving much of the strategy’s impact unexamined.

with arsenic, radionuclides, manganese, and nitrates. Low-income, minority, and rural, well-dependent communities face disproportionate exposure.

Project Censored cited worsening shortages in Texas due to drought, aging infrastructure, and international water disputes, and in Florida, where population growth and groundwater overuse have collided with climate-driven storms and droughts. In Virginia, massive data centers consume up to five million gallons of water daily, Grist reported, straining already depleted aquifers.

Globally, the situation mirrors U.S. trends. A joint U.S./UN assessment, Drought Hotspots Around the World 2023—2025, described current conditions as “a slow-moving global catastrophe,” with 48 U.S. states experiencing drought in 2024—the highest number on record.

Meanwhile, The Guardian reported that the Trump administration ordered the closure of 25 federal water-monitoring centers, undermining the nation’s ability to track shortages.

Although major outlets like the New York Times and The Washington Post cover droughts, Project Censored noted they typically frame the issue as an economic threat to agriculture, not a direct danger to human life. As of July 2025, Newsweek was the only U.S. corporate outlet to report on the USGS water-availability study.

Adam Carolla: I did a show in Eugene and then I drove to Bend. I believe there’s a casino. tS: Indian Head Casino, Warm Springs?

AC: That’s it. tS: You’ll be in Bend proper this time.

AC: Thank goodness. tS: Everyone knows you from Loveline and The Man Show. Now you have a super popular podcast, The Adam Carolla Show. You seem to have gotten more political these days. What triggered that change?

AC: I live in California, and California kind of got ruined, and then COVID kind of screwed up my kids’ lives because they got their school closed for two years, and it was at that point that I started talking more and pushing back more against what I thought was bad policy. I had friends who had a restaurant that got closed down and they’re out of business. Stuff like that. It really wreaked havoc with horrible policy ideas.

But I think being in California and seeing California’s demise got me more vocal about that stuff. tS: I lived in Portland for fifteen years and it’s been tough to watch that city’s demise.

AC: It doesn’t have to go to s**t. It’s preventable stuff they got warned about, like, don’t do it, but they do it, and then it goes to s**t, and they have to fix it.

It ends up being political, but it’s more a sociological thing for me. I’m more interested in why you can’t prevent this and how come you don’t understand what’s going to happen. You want to defund the police and then you defund the police and then there’s a bunch of crime, and then you go, let’s not defund the police.

Why did you even have to do it in the first place? You didn’t know what the outcome was going to be? That’s what L.A. does. They go, ‘we’re not going to criminalize homelessness,’ and then there’s homeless people everywhere, and then they have to fix it. My whole thing is why don’t you guys figure it out in advance for a change? tS: What should L.A. do about homelessness?

AC: Homeless people and criminals will take as much as you give them. If you say it’s a misdemeanor up to $950 then they’ll steal $949 worth of stuff. If you say we treat our homeless with compassion, you’ll get a bunch of homeless. You’ll get a bunch of whatever you create. That’s the way it works. You’re going to have to be tough on these people. By the way, it’s not compassionate to let them die on the streets. Let them die of fentanyl overdose and sleep on a curb. That’s compassion? tS: You were in the news during the Palisades fire when you weren’t sure if your house burned down. Did your house make it out OK? AC: My house made it out. But most of the houses around me didn’t. tS: Have they begun rebuilding?

AC: Nobody in my neighborhood has rebuilt anything. I don’t know if it’s a permitting thing. I assume it is. tS: They don’t expedite that during an emergency?

AC: They don’t really do stuff. I mean, they don’t do stuff you want them to do. But they really don’t do stuff for taxpayers. They do stuff for other people.

They don’t really help out the people that are paying.

The people that are paying all the taxes don’t get much love. They’re kind of considered the enemy—rich guys.

They don’t help them out. It’s a strange relationship to have with the people who are paying the most in taxes.

They get the least. That’s pretty much how it works.

— Adam Carolla tS: You talk plenty about your carpentry experience on your podcast and even had a recurring trivia bit on Loveline. Are you still active in the trade?

AC: I’m a journeyman carpenter. I can build houses.

I’ve always done it and I always will. tS: Why don’t millennials know how to build anything?

AC: It’s important to learn a skill, but you have to destigmatize it. Not going to college doesn’t mean you’re a dumb person. Also, no student debt, and, you know, good money. Nothing wrong with that. (Pacific Ocean sounds) Sorry, I’m on a construction site in Malibu right now looking at something. tS: What are they building?

AC: It looks like they’re trying to rebuild from the fire.

tS: There was a recent video of you on the Pacific Coast Highway showing all the empty lots with no sign of rebuilding. Same permitting delays?

AC: California isn’t good at this stuff. But I don’t think we want to be good at it. tS: What kind of policy is that? What is their plan?

AC: I think their plan is just nothing. Like they’re nihilists or something. I don’t think they want anything. tS: Do you think there will be a swing in the next election cycle?

AC: You never know because they always make horrible decisions. But, yeah, it would be nice if they went the other way. They just don’t typically. They’re not good lesson learners, is how I would describe it. tS: Do you have any interest in running for office?

AC: It does come up now and again, but I don’t have any real thoughts about running for president or governor. Mainly, I couldn’t imagine putting my family through that. It’s so crazy now. tS: You probably get more done with your podcast anyway.

AC: Yeah. tS: You were recently talking on your podcast about what may be the most polarizing issue in the country, and that is bidets. Why are so many Americans resistant?

AC: All I can say is old habits die hard, I guess. But the bidet toilet seat is like the greatest invention ever and everyone should…yeah.

CELEBRATING THE POWER OF MENTORSHIP IN CENTRAL OREGON Big Champion Award- Dennis Murphy Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon, a program of J Bar J Youth Services, is proud to honor Dennis Murphy, CEO of Hayden Homes, as the inaugural recipient of the Big Champion Award in 2025.

Dennis has been part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters family for more than 20 years. In 2002, he was matched with his Little Brother, Roberto, beginning a relationship that has endured for more than two decades and continues to this day.

“I’ve been fortunate to have had some great mentors growing up, which is what inspired me to be a part of Big Brothers Big Sisters,” said Dennis Murphy. “My journey with Roberto has been a powerful reminder that leadership isn’t just about guiding, it’s also about listening and learning.”

The Big Champion Award was introduced in 2025 to recognize individuals whose extraordinary commitment has strengthened the Big Brothers Big Sisters mission.

Reflecting on that relationship, Roberto shared, “Dennis gave me a really big sense of self-esteem and gave me the confidence in myself to do things I never thought I could do.” His words reflect the lasting impact of a mentor who consistently showed up and believed in his potential.

Beyond his role as a Big, Dennis has served as a member and chair of the BBBSCO Advisory Council. He has remained a steadfast advocate for the organization’s mission to help all youth achieve their full potential through one-to-one mentoring relationships.

The McArthur Stakes Its Claim in Sisters Longtime local restaurateur brings elevated Northwest flavors to town

pened in the summer of 2025 on the Five Pines campus, The McArthur Restaurant and Bar is located in the same building as the Sisters Athletic Club in the former home of Rio Mexican restaurant.

This new spot aims squarely at elevated Pacific Northwest dining without forgetting that people also want to relax, linger and maybe order another drink.

The McArthur is the latest project from longtime Central Oregon restaurateur Paul Mercer, whose résumé reads like a local dining hall of fame. Over the past 30 years Mercer has owned and operated The Victorian Café, The Kokanee Café in Camp Sherman, The Trout House in Sunriver and The Pig and Pound in Redmond. For this venture, Mercer teamed up with chef Morrie Christiansen, naming the restaurant after Tam McArthur Rim, the iconic hiking trail and geographic landmark that looms large in both local lore and weekend plans. The name alone signals that the restaurant wants to be rooted in place, proud of its surroundings and grounded in regional flavor.

The McArthur bills itself as an elevated dining experience built around locally sourced and organic ingredients, presented through a Pacific Northwest lens.

The menu reflects that ambition, offering everything from hazelnut crusted trout and halibut cheeks to elk sliders and duck breast finished with an apple cranberry glaze. Burgers sit comfortably alongside more refined plates, and the dinner menu shifts seasonally, giving the kitchen room to play with what is fresh and available.

On my visit, I opted to sit at the bar, which is open to walk-ins all evening and outfitted with notably comfortable padded stools complete with backs. This may seem like a small detail, but it matters when you are settling in for multiple courses. The bar area itself is narrow and a bit tight, with a few tables opposite the bar, but the color palette is warm and inviting, and the bar back is handsome and well stocked. The lighting throughout the restaurant felt slightly off to me, a bit brighter than expected in the dining room and not quite dialed in at the bar, but neither issue detracted too much from the overall experience.

The layout of the space is a little unconventional.

You enter directly into the dining room, which is fairly plain at first glance, with the kitchen immediately to the left. To reach the bar, you walk through the dining room toward the back right corner. The dining area is not large, but it was packed with diners clearly enjoying themselves, a good sign for a restaurant still finding its rhythm. Reservations are recommended for the dining room, and based on the crowd, that advice seems wise.

Risotto Croquette at The McArthur is a standout starter featuring creamy rice with bacon, wild mushrooms and an eye catching soft egg on top.

The starter menu is where The McArthur really shows off its range. Options include hand-cut fries cooked in duck fat and served with black garlic aioli, fresh oysters, crab cakes, steamed mussels, ground elk sliders and tempura vegetables with kimchi mayo and ponzu. Salads are thoughtful and hearty, from the Blue Harvest with butter lettuce, bacon, apple and candied walnuts to a braised red and golden beet salad.

I ordered several appetizers, starting with the crab cakes. The cakes themselves had a lovely texture and were not overly breaded, allowing the crab to shine.

However, the sauce they were served on, while tasty on its own, felt too heavy for the delicate crab. It was a rich, almost spicy sauce that overpowered the dish rather than complementing it. The crab meat was also darker than my personal preference, as I tend to favor white lump crab, though that is very much a matter of taste.

Next came the French onion soup, which was as hearty as promised. The bowl was generous and packed with onions, topped with a thick layer of melted cheese and bread. The cheese cap was a bit hard to break into, and the soup leaned thicker than I usually like, but it delivered on comfort and depth of flavor.

The clear standout of the night was the Risotto Croquette. Creamy rice mixed with wild mushrooms and bacon, fried to perfection, then dressed with a blue cheese cream sauce and balsamic reduction. A soft egg perched atop one of the croquettes added richness and visual appeal. It was indulgent, balanced and deeply satisfying, the kind of dish you keep thinking about long after the plate is cleared.

I also ordered the sweet potato gnocchi side, though it could easily pass for an entrée. The portion was generous enough to share, especially for those who enjoy small plate dining. The gnocchi were small, tender dumplings, nicely seared and coated in a creamy, well-seasoned sauce. It was filling without being heavy and offered a perfect bite every time.

When I asked the bartender for recommendations, he enthusiastically endorsed the gnocchi and mentioned the duck breast, which is now firmly on my list

for next time. He also noted that the tempura vegetables are a crowd favorite, a colorful assortment served with kimchi mayo and ponzu.

The beverage program is solid and well curated, with a wine list highlighting Willamette Valley and other Pacific Northwest producers, alongside premium beers and a lineup of signature cocktails. The cocktails feature spirits like vodka, gin, rye, bourbon and mezcal, with playful names referencing local landmarks such as Sidecar to Hoodoo and Suttle Lake. As someone who leans toward tequila, I wished for an agave forward option, but the list still offers plenty to explore.

Service throughout the evening was excellent. The bartender was attentive and knowledgeable, and Mercer himself was on the floor chatting with diners, an encouraging sign of hands-on ownership. Prices reflect the current reality of casual fine dining, with starters ranging from $14 to $20, cocktails averaging $16 and main dishes spanning from a $19 burger to nearly $50 for higher end entrées. It is not inexpensive, but it is very much in line with what diners expect for this level of quality and sourcing.

Will I return? Absolutely. I enjoyed the bar area and appreciated the thoughtful menu and warm hospitality. Next time, I am eyeing a fish dish, the coconut shrimp curry and that duck breast, assuming they are still in rotation. And if not, I trust The McArthur to offer something new worth trying. In a town that values both tradition and a sense of adventure, The McArthur feels like a restaurant ready to become a regular stop, whether you are celebrating a special occasion or simply hungry after a long day on the trail.

Redmond Woman is a 'Resilient Warrior' Hoping to Inspire Others

indy Dougherty has had a challenging life, going through numerous traumatic events dating back to her earliest memories at age 4 when she says she was sexually abused by one of her brothers. She spent her childhood split between Florida with her mother and California with her father whom she describes as a drug addict and alcoholic. She joined the Army in 1995 as a combat field medic. She was first stationed in Germany, then deployed to Bosnia. While there, Dougherty became ill from a parasite causing numerous medical issues for years.

When she returned to the U.S., she worked for BOSS, a program to enhance the morale and welfare of single soldiers. She says she medically retired from the military in 1999, still dealing with pancreatitis connected to her illness overseas. Dougherty says she became an insulin-dependent diabetic.

As a civilian, she became a nurse and eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in health sciences at the University of Colorado. She worked at a trauma center in Denver, then transitioned into radiology, then moved to Texas for a relationship that didn’t work out.

She suffered another medical issue that started with a bilateral ankle fracture that she says caused Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, a chronic condition causing a burning sensations and extreme sensitivity. Dougherty says treatment lasted for years. She moved to Oregon in 2014 and now lives in Redmond.

“Oregon’s been the best place that I’ve ever lived,” she told the Source. “I really started becoming an advocate for veterans.”

Still recovering from CRPS, laid up in bed, Dougherty watched “Vikings” on the History Channel.

“I drew inspiration from that,” she says, “and I

wrote my autobiography called “Resilient Warrior.”

She dedicated the book to Michael Hirst, the writer and creator of “Vikings.” Published in 2020, it’s a personal journey through her life, but she hopes her experiences can help others.

“I wanted adults that had been through a lot of trauma to be able to understand that even though you’ve

gone through this trauma, there still can be a light at the end of the tunnel…And it’s not easy. There’s going to be therapy that’s totally needed. I’m still in therapy for the things that had happened to me and still have anger about it, but maybe this will help people have some kind of hope for the future and maybe be able to see that there can be a change.”

Dougherty has written a new book, published in 2025, for children 12 and under called “A Dragon’s Voice.”

“The first lesson is, do not steal or take what’s not yours,” she explains. “Second is how to make friends and create a win-win situation. The third one is what I do has an effect on me and you and everybody else around me. And the last one, which is the most important one to me, is listen to your intuition.” Dougherty says she includes a message to parents about how to prevent kidnapping and sex trafficking.

Dougherty now works as a nurse for the state of Oregon, going into group or foster homes to work with people on Medicare or Medicaid who have severe intellectual disabilities.

“I’ve found that this is honestly been the best work I’ve ever done, and I think it’s that way because I feel like I’m making a huge difference.”

Dougherty just celebrated her 49th birthday on Dec. 8. Outside of work, she spends time walking the dry canyon trail in Redmond, gardening and writing poetry. For now, she doesn’t have any plans to write another book, but is proud of what she’s accomplished, despite the challenges.

“It’s not been always the greatest, but, I mean, at this point, I feel like I’ve come very far.”

I

don’t think I’m in love with the “Avatar” films as much as I should be and that might be directly correlated to the number of movies that I’ve seen across the years of my life. I’m fully aware that James Cameron and his team of technical geniuses have, with Pandora, built a world that is gorgeous to get lost in like a black light poster in a dorm room, but the scripts, going back to the original, feel like an amalgamation of other, better movies. Visually, the “Avatars” are works of limitless originality, but those plots not only cannibalize dozens of classic movies from across the decades, but also the “Avatar” movies themselves.

Back in 2009, “Avatar” took the white savior narrative of “Dances with Wolves” and smashed it together with the world-building and environmental messaging of “FernGully: The Last Rainforest” with astonishingly popular results. If the technical aspects of “Avatar” weren’t so groundbreaking (with still unmatched motion capture, 3D and CGI), then I’m not sure these movies would have grossed billions in the box office, making “Avatar” the highest-grossing film of all time and 2022’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” the third highest-grossing. They’re not necessarily bad movies; they just don’t say anything we haven’t seen a million times. Or at least that I haven’t.

Will this weekend’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” make billions like its older siblings? Only time will tell, but as a film, I think it’s probably the strongest of the three, with the same amount of derivative storytelling, but stronger in its character work and arcs, with more exciting action and interesting plot directions for future installments. I still don’t necessarily care about what I’m looking at, but I’m at least entertained by what is onscreen.

Sam Worthington is still mostly stoic and wooden as Jake Sully, once a Marine and now fully entrenched in his life as a Na’vi: ten-foot-tall, blue, indigenously coded space kitty. Along with his racist and nearly feral wife and baby momma, Neytiri (the always mesmerizing to watch Zoe Saldaña) and their four children of equal or lesser interest (including a pre-teen Sigourney Weaver and a white kid with dreads that says “bro” a lot), the Sully clan must band together to fight evil corporate and military colonizers, a psychotic, volcano-dwelling tribe of Na’vi called the Mangkwan and Colonel Quaritch, a Colonel Kurtz-esque marine who is torn between his dedication to the military and his desire to be a ten-foot-tall kitty cat.

We’re probably going to be watching “Avatar” movies for the rest of our lives as Cameron has a chunk of “Avatar 4” already filmed (so that the kids don’t age too much) and “Avatar 5” planned, plotted and mostly scripted. There’s a lot of room for stories

to be told in the world of Pandora and the Sully family is just the tip of the iceberg (or at least it should be). It makes sense that Jake was the main character of the original because he served as an audience surrogate, exploring Pandora at the same time as we did.

But now he feels like an impediment to more complex stories told in this universe. I’m pretty over the Sully family now. Or at least Jake.

Most of “Avatar: Fire and Ash” feels like “Way of Water 2.0” with several of the same story beats and character arcs recycled once more. Again, all of it is very pretty to look at and I was never bored for any of its 200+ minutes, but I’ll forget most of it within days, just as I did the previous ones. I think the “Avatar” movies might be the only ones in history that make as much money as they do, but leave no real cultural footprint. Yes, the Na’vi are iconic as a design, but ask the average viewer to name one of the Sully kids or how/why Sigourney Weaver was cloned and they won’t have a clue. Cameron and his team of writers seem more interested in playing around with their own Campbell-esque, archetypal hero monomyth tropes than actually telling a captivating story.

James Cameron has made some of my favorite movies of all time with “Terminator 2,” “The Abyss” and “Aliens,” but I wish I understood why he has spent so much time in the twilight of his career on these movies when I know he has better in him. So far, the high water mark of the “Avatar” trilogy for me is the second hour of “The Way of Water,” which just sees the Sully kids swimming around and exploring the oceans of Pandora. No story, no cringey dialogue, just a mesmerizing tech demo to get lost in. Cameron is still a visual master, regardless of the goofiness of these movies, I just hope we get another masterpiece before he retires.

Still, the villains are great (including a scene-stealing Oona Chaplin as a psychedelic space witch), the 3D and IMAX projection is breathtaking and the messages involving conservation, anti-colonization and pro-indigenous protection are important. I respect what Cameron is doing with these movies more than I actually like them, but as long as he is behind the camera, he has earned my three hours of attention. Even as the realization slowly dawns that these movies just might not be my thing, I’m ultimately resigned to the fact that I’m probably not done with Pandora yet and it’s certainly not done with me.

The Red Chair gallery opened in 2010 to give local artists a place to showcase their work.

he first Friday of 2026 will also be a goodbye party for a downtown staple. The Red Chair gallery is closing permanently around 8pm on Jan. 2 after the First Friday event. It opened in the historic O’Kane Building on NW Oregon Avenue in 2010 to support local artists who needed a location to show and sell their work. It was named after one of Mt. Bachelor’s earliest chairlifts. About 30 local artists sell their work and staff the gallery. Many of them have been a part of the journey since the first day.

Rita Neely Dunlavy originally opened the gallery with five other owners. As they moved on, Dunlavy bought them out, eventually running the store herself since 2018. She’s now in her 80s and says it feels like the right time to retire.

“I think it’s been a great run. Bend has been very, very good to us. The best way I could try to describe this when my friends or my family ask me, ‘What were you thinking? Why are you doing this?’ It just feels bittersweet. It feels like the right thing to do at the right time.”

Dunlavy says January is generally a slow time, so she decided to close at the end of the holiday season to leave on a high note.

“There is no plan. It’s just trying to do the best for the artists and if they get out while they’re on top and don’t have to go through a quiet season, trying to find a new home for themselves, I think they’re better off.”

Dunlavy plans to keep the Red Chair gallery website active for the next year with a link to each artist so customers can find them.

“I love the gallery and I love the artists and it breaks my heart,” she says. “It’s very bittersweet because we’re doing very well. Going out when you’re doing well, to me, is more favorable than something happening in the next year.”

Dunlavy expects most of the gallery artists to attend January’s First Friday to say goodbye to each other and mingle with the public. She says running the gallery seven days a week can be exhausting.

“My plans are the freedom from plans,” she chuckles.

n the aftermath of the mass shooting in Sydney, Australia’s famed Bondi Beach that claimed 15 lives and injured 40 more during a Hanukkah celebration — making it the second deadliest massacre in the country’s history — local Sunriver Brewing Company realized its popular Bondi Beach Party IPA could be associated with the slaughter because of the unique name. So the brewing company issued a public service announcement via social media that reads: “We want to acknowledge the horrific incident that took place at Bondi Beach in Sydney on (December 14, 2025). While we’ve been brewing this beer since 2020, we know it might be challenging to support a beer named Bondi Beach Party at this point in time. Please join us in directing financial resources to the victim’s families, survivors, and Sydney’s Jewish community. From now through January 4, 2026, Sunriver Brewing Company will be donating (half) of every dollar sold out for all Bondi IPA sales to the Bondi Beach community. This includes pint and canned sales in our pub and taproom, brewery dock sales, and keg and can sales to our wholesale partners. We will be evaluating next steps with this brand over the coming weeks. Sunriver Brewing Company, condemns violence in any form, and we hope that you can join us in creating something good that came from something terrible.”

The PSA was signed by Sunriver Brewing’s director of brewing operations, Brett Thomas.

As mentioned, the beer has been in existence in highly limited quantities since 2020, then it earned auspicious medals at the World Beer Cup and Oregon Brewers Awards in 2022

— arguably the two most vaunted competitions on the global and local levels — which greenlit the beer into joining Sunriver’s year-round offerings. The name, incidentally, was the brainchild of Ryan Duley, who had been with Sunriver Brewing since it opened in 2012 and stepped out of his role as director of marketing in late 2024 after helping name the Australian-style pale ale for one of his most cherished spots among his world travels.

Alas, some patrons and individuals were unaware of the beer until Bondi Beach became headline news following the antisemitic massacre, having explicitly targeted members of Australia’s Jewish community.

“There was definitely a negative reaction from a select few customers and retail accounts after the mass shooting event,” explained Thomas.

“We were essentially receiving hate emails from individuals that somehow were convinced that we specifically named the beer to ‘celebrate’ the killing of Jewish people. Initially, I was perplexed that people thought we would do such a thing, not to mention it’s impossible to get a fully branded beer to market in four days, and that nobody in their right mind would aid anyone in such an activity.”

As for where proceeds will be donated, Thomas said, “We’re fortunate to have friends up at Leikam Brewing in Portland,” which happens to be Oregon’s only kosher brewery, “that have some ties to the Jewish community in Sydney and will help ensure we get the donations to appropriately vetted organizations.” He added that Sunriver Brewing will post additional information on social media when possible.

I like and can live merrily with, Merry Christmas Likewise, I like and can live joyfully with, Happy Hannukah.

Although originally celebrated for 12 days, Christmas currently is often a one eve and a day-long celebration. It is the birthday of Jesus Christ and is one of the biggest festivals across our globe. A day of joy. A day of deep gratitude and prayer. Families gather. Wonderful breakfasts and dinners served.

Presents. Presents and more presents.

Christmas is a festival of love. I can see people being merry for 24 hours. In fact, I have seen it my entire life.

Hannukah is celebrated for a full eight days. It is a festival of light that reminds us that our light, our brightness, our joyful souls shall always shine. This will be regardless of any and all internal or external opposition.

We shall shine for even longer that we could logically imagine. Keep shining, that is the message of these holy days of light. This year’s celebration, even more so. The tragedy in Sydney has not and will not stop our lights from shining. So, be happy for eight days and beyond. As best you can, endure and with the support of loved ones and the connection to your Higher Power… keep shining!

Hannukah is eight days. It’s a stretch but it’s just one day more than a week.

Many of us can, with support and some effort, keep our lights going brighter than normal for eight days.

Have a happy New Year? A full 365 days of happiness? It is a wonderful thought, but in my decades here on earth, I’ve never seen anyone who could pull it off. Certainly, not me. It is sweet to say Have a Happy New Year.

We’ve heard it our entire lives. Life isn’t that simple. Just like our weather, our year changes. Our days change, even our minutes. Sometimes subtly and sometime ferociously, and happiness

is not always available. Our houses can burn down, old friends depart, we have moods, finances can rumble around in our brains, and I haven’t even mentioned the daily news and what that does to our day-to-day happiness.

So, Have a Happy New Year? I have a suggestion for all of us.

Few can ever be happy for the entire year of 2026, life is more complex than that. Try this one: Say, “Make it a very intentional New Year.” People might stop and look at you with a funny face and wonder what you’re talking about.

And you can tell them something like this: YOU: The best way I know how to be happy in 2026 is to be as intentional as I can be, every day, all year long.

THE OTHER PERSON: If I am more intentional in 2026, will that make me happy every day?

YOU: No, but it will minimize your hurtful words and behaviors that make no one happy, and it will maximize your positive words and behaviors which bring light into each moment.

Each of us has a part that leans toward joy, acceptance, curiosity, and connecting meaningfully with our beautiful world. And we also have a part that can be more reactionary, that judges, is hurtful, self-centered, angry and disconnects us from our beautiful world.

The two primary connecting ingredients are love and courage. Our distancing ingredients are rooted in old fears that have been hanging around for a long time.

There are two essential ways to move closer to the light, which is our most important job here on Earth: INTENTION and REPETITION. Through daily prayer, meditation, inspirational readings, learning with mentors, we can stay on our holy track of happiness.

It is not an easy road to travel. And it is worth every purposeful step we take.

Blessings to all of us on our intentional New Year!

A New Year for Housing: 2026

Supply looks different in Bend Nationally, housing supply remains constrained but Bend is an important exception. Compared to this time last year, Bend is carrying significantly more active inventory, giving buyers more choice and negotiating power than they’ve had in several years. As expected, prices have adjusted downward to reflect that increased supply.

This doesn’t signal a crashing market, it signals a functioning one.

Price softening has been measured and uneven, with the most notable adjustments occurring among homes that were aggressively priced or slower to adapt to today’s interest-rate environment. Well-located, well-maintained homes priced realistically are still selling (even with multiple offers), just without the outrageous over asking offers of past cycles.!

Interest rates are likely to stay… boring

Looking toward 2026: evolution, not collapse

Many buyers are waiting for dramatic rate cuts. Most economists aren’t. The more likely scenario is rate stability, not rate relief. With the labor market easing gradually (rather than sharply increasing) and inflation only partially cooled, borrowing costs are expected to remain elevated. When rates stop swinging wildly, buyers adapt. Sellers recalibrate.

Transactions become more intentional.

The market shifts from shock to normalization, slower, yes, but more disciplined.

Most long-range forecasts looking toward 2026 point to moderation rather than disruption. What’s changing isn’t whether real estate works as a longterm asset, but how people participate.

Financing creativity, regional nuance, and lifestyle-driven decisions matter more than betting on macro shifts. The winners won’t be those trying to predict the next dramatic shift, but those who understand the forces already at work and act with discipline.

Over the last 5+ years, the U.S. dramatically expanded the money supply.

This caused extreme price increases; while inflation has technically cooled, those additional dollars didn’t disappear. They reshaped asset prices, expectations, and long-term cost structures.

Housing reflects this clearly. Construction costs, land values, labor, and insurance expenses all remain elevated. Even as inflation slows, the baseline cost of producing housing is higher than it was pre-2020. This helps explain why home prices didn’t collapse when interest rates rose: the cost of borrowing changed, but the value floor didn’t reset.

As we move into the new year, real estate continues to function as a longterm hedge against currency dilution (aka inflation). That doesn’t mean runaway appreciation but it does mean a full collapse to past price levels is increasingly unlikely.
