of this. Furthermore, students are involved in initiatives such as playground pals, buddy reading programmes and organising whole school events. The enthusiasm and excitement from students and teachers alike when taking part in whole school initiatives or world-wide themed days, such as World Book Day, World Mental Health Day and Cancer awareness day, are especially heart-warming to see and underlines the warm teacher - student relationships that exist at AAESS.

Ms. Emma Ryan, Year 3 teacher and member of the school’s wellbeing committee, said: ‘The journey to achieve the Carnegie Mental Health Award has underlined the dedication we place towards the wellbeing and holistic development of the students at AAESS. Creating a positive and happy environment is at the forefront for academic progress and learning!”

The award was established in 2017 by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools is part of Leeds Beckett University and their social enterprise, Minds Ahead.

The Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools aims to strengthen pupils’ mental health by supporting schools to make a positive change at all levels of the education system, improving students’ outcomes and life chances.

Rachel C. Boyle, Dean of Leeds Beckett’s Carnegie School of Education, said: “The achievement of the Mental Health award is a demonstration of the school’s significant commitment to improving children’s and staff’s mental health and wellbeing. It is also a commitment to developing practices in school that seek to improve awareness and expertise in creating safe and secure learning environments in which all children can truly fulfil their potential. This award is one that all staff can be truly proud of”.

Dean Johnstone, founder and CEO of Minds Ahead said: “This award shines a light on the excellent work schools are doing to promote mental health for their community of children and adults. It is thrilling and humbling to learn about Al Ain English Speaking School and the many other schools engaged in the quality award process. I’d like to offer my congratulations on this deserved recognition.”

How to prevent the Summer Slide

Having fun with a touch of learning!
The Source FAMILY 14

Summer has officially arrived! A time of joy for kids, but it can be a challenge for parents. As children take a break from school, parents face the dilemma of keeping them engaged and entertained while also allowing them to unwind and relax. But what about the Summer Slide? Is it a genuine concern? There are two contrasting perspectives to explore. One suggests that what is learned remains stored for future retrieval, creating a solid foundation for continued growth. On the other hand, some argue that without regular rehearsal and practice, knowledge may fade away, leading to a potential setback when the new school year begins. As parents, it’s natural to feel a sense of responsibility to ensure our children’s educational progress is nurtured throughout the summer months. j

Turn errands into adventures

Involve your children in running errands with you and transform routine tasks into valuable learning experiences. Hand them the shopping list and empower them to assist you in locating items. Grocery shopping provides an excellent opportunity to exercise cognitive skills. Encourage them to compare and contrast products, examine the country of origin, check quantity and nutrition details, and inspire their curiosity to ask questions. This engaging activity not only enhances their maths abilities but also enriches their vocabulary and language skills. Make every outing a chance for education and exploration!

Create meaningful memories

These games not only offer endless fun but also teach valuable life skills like turn-taking, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Strengthen your family bond as you embark on these enjoyable and enriching experiences together.

Nurture meaningful conversations

Engage in mindful and attentive conversations with your child to enhance their vocabulary skills. Recognise their need for relaxation and create opportunities for dialogue when they are receptive. Respect their boundaries and readiness to communicate, ensuring that conversations are enjoyable and engaging. By fostering a supportive environment, you can effectively cultivate their language development while respecting their individual preferences and comfort levels.

Read, read and read!

Encouraging a love for reading starts at home. Embrace the power of literature by making reading a regular part of your family’s routine. Foster your child’s curiosity by selecting books that align with their interests and are appropriate for their reading level. Providing materials that are neither too challenging nor too easy ensures an engaging and confidence-boosting reading experience. If your child prefers reading on a device, consider introducing them to a simpli-

Connect with your children by involving them in decision-making. Ask them about their desires for the summer and inquire about their preferences. Do they crave some alone time or desire exciting travel adventures? Engaging them in conversations with your partner makes them feel valued and important.

Game on!

Unleash the laughter and excitement by playing classic games such as Trivial Pursuit, Snakes and Ladders, or Uno.

By seamlessly blending learning and fun, we can reinvent these everyday activities, such as engaging educational activities, reading challenges, and interactive experiences. In doing so, we can help children embrace academic success upon their return to school, all while cherishing moments of pure enjoyment and fun.

Modon Properties (Modon), the Abu Dhabi developer, has partnered with Kelly Slater Wave Company (KSWC), the world experts in man-made wave technology, to create Surf Abu Dhabi, the most advanced wave facility in the world.

Featuring the world’s longest ride and the world’s biggest barrel, as well as the world’s largest manmade wave facility, Surf Abu Dhabi is an exclusive surf experience designed to inspire and appeal to everyone - from beginners to elite surfers.

Surf Abu Dhabi will further underscore Abu Dhabi’s sporting offering when it opens later this year. Located on Hudayriyat Is-

land, Abu Dhabi’s sport, leisure and recreation destination, the elite-level surfing facility will take its place alongside other major additions to the city’s sporting infrastructure including a 3,500seat velodrome equipped to stage international indoor cycling competitions.

Bill O’Regan, CEO of Modon, said: “At Modon, our role is to support the growth of Abu Dhabi’s ambitions and sports asset development strategy which is contributing towards a legacy of sporting excellence.

“As the world’s premier manmade surf experience, Surf Abu Dhabi is specified to host major international surf competitions. It

is a high-performance destination which will offer world-class surfers the perfect conditions to train or compete, while also growing the region’s surfing community, and inspiring wider society to embrace a healthy new activity.”

“When we opened the first wave, the mystery it created and excitement that ensued was something I’m not sure many have experienced,” said Kelly Slater, 11-time World Surf League Champion and founder of KSWC. “Surfing reaches people in all corners of the globe and I’m always surprised with who gravitates towards this world. Having a KSWC wave in Abu Dhabi is something I’ve never dreamt would happen but here it is. Unbelievable. While not many

would have predicted the location for the project, there are great synergies with Abu Dhabi and like KSWC they are always innovating and ahead of the curve. This is going to be a lot of fun for so many people.”

Jeff Fleeher, President of Kelly Slater Wave Company, said: “As a global hub for tourism, sport, and business, with diverse peoples and cultures, Abu Dhabi is the perfect place for us to showcase KSWC’s unmatched wave technology and surf experience. Mayo Clinic Q and A:

Are energy drinks a healthy option ?

The Source FAMILY 24

DEAR MAYO CLINIC: My husband has swapped out his regular morning coffee for an energy drink. Are these healthy options for getting his daily dose of caffeine? Do energy drinks have more caffeine than regular coffee? And how much caffeine is too much?

ANSWER: People love their caffeine, whether it’s coffee, tea, soda or energy drinks like your husband. It’s the most common stimulant in the world, and about 90 percent of all adults consume caffeine in some form every day. Many different caffeine options and flavors are readily available at coffee shops, restaurants, grocery stores and convenience stores. Energy drinks, in particular, are packaged in bright cans and have exciting names.

Caffeine is big business as well. The total global sale of energy drink alone reached $57 billion in 2020. Energy drinks are the second-most popular dietary supplement among United States teens and young adults behind multivitamins.

Caffeine’s health effects vary from person to person and depend on the dose. It’s been shown to improve vigilance, reaction time, alertness and ability to concentrate. It can help alleviate the adverse effects of sleep deprivation. Caffeine intake also is associated with a reduced risk of Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, alcoholic cirrhosis and gout.

However, caffeine intake also is linked with nervousness, insomnia, irritability and panic attacks. Those with preexisting anxiety disorders may be more susceptible to these effects. Caffeine can temporarily raise

blood pressure, and a high intake has been associated with mild increase in cholesterol levels.

Check the caffeine amount in your husband’s energy drink. Up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day is considered safe for most adults. Most contain 100–300 milligrams of caffeine per serving, while home-brewed coffee contains 80–100 milligrams of caffeine per serving. Of course, these amounts can vary. If his preferred energy drink has 210 or more milligrams of caffeine per serving, consuming more than one per day would place his intake over the recommended level.

Excessive caffeine intake, more than 400 milligrams per day, can cause palpitations, tremors, agitation and gastrointestinal upset. Heavy caffeine use also is associated with an increased risk of other addictive behaviors, like smoking and alcohol abuse. People who routinely consume caffeine may develop physical and psychological dependence and may they experience withdrawal symptoms if intake is abruptly stopped.

Another ingredient to review in his energy drinks is sugar. Many can contain significant amounts of added sugar or other sweeteners. High intake of added sugar can contribute to a variety of health problems, so the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends limiting the intake of added sugars to no more than 10 percent of total daily calories.

If your husband follows a 2,000-calorie diet, no more than 200 calories per day should come from added sugars. This is about 12 teaspoons a day. One 16-ounce can of some energy drinks can contain as much 210 calories and 47 grams of added

sugar, which is equal to roughly 12 teaspoons. This is an entire day’s worth of added sugar. Energy drinks aren’t all bad, though, especially when consumed in moderation. Some contain vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Others contain herbal supplements, such as ginseng and guarana, which may be used to increase energy and mental alertness. Use caution with these substances, as research on safety and effectiveness is limited. Also, some herbal supplements can interact with medications, so seek input from your husband’s health care team if he takes prescription medications.

It’s important to note that people who are pregnant or breastfeeding should limit their caffeine intake to 200 milligrams or less per day. The Food and Drug Administration has not set a safe level for children, but the American Academy of Pediatrics discourages the consumption of caffeine and other stimulants by children and adolescents. — Jamie Pronschinske, R.D.N., Dietitian, Mayo Clinic Health System, La Crosse, Wisconsin

5 tips for a smooth visa application ahead of summer holidays

The Source FAMILY 32

2023 has been a year like no other with travellers eager to make the most of their opportunities to explore new destinations and cultures, and obtaining a visa is an integral part of international travel. To ensure a seamless and safe visa application experience, there are several tips you should keep in mind.

1. It is essential to plan ahead and apply well in advance to avoid any inconveniences. Start by researching the visa requirements for your destination country well ahead of your trip. Ensure you have all the necessary documents and information ready before submitting your application. It’s also advisable to book your flights and accommodations in advance to avoid last-minute price hikes or unavailability. Keep yourself updated with the latest travel advisories and guidelines from both your home country and the destination country. With proper planning and preparation, you can make that long-awaited international trip a reality without any hassle or inconvenience.

2. Timelines for visa processing are clearly outlined on the relevant Embassy/Consulate’s official websites. This information can be valuable in helping you prepare and apply for your visa well in advance. However, it is important to note that during peak travel seasons, such as summer holidays or long weekends, visa processing can take longer than expected. To avoid any delays or last-minute stress, it is recommended that you apply for your visa as early as possible. Schengen countries, for instance, accept applications up to six months ahead of your date of travel. This will give you plenty of time to gather all the necessary documents and ensure that your application is complete and accurate.

3. Our Visa Application Centres require applicants to applicants to book an appointment in ad-

vance. It is recommended that you schedule your appointment well in advance of your intended date of travel as appointment availabilities and processing timelines can vary depending on the volume of applications received. VFS Global provides a convenient and hassle-free online appointment booking system for visa applications.

Appointments are available on the official VFS Global website and are free of charge. Be cautious of third-parties that claim to offer priority/expedited appointment booking services for an additional fee as they are fraudulent. Such entities should be immediately reported to VFS Global and the relevant Embassy/ Consulate for further action. VFS Global does not charge a fee for booking appointments.

4. If you’re planning to travel abroad, it’s important to check the visa requirements for your destination country on the VFS Global website which provides information on visa applications and processing timelines. Additionally, many countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond your return date, so make sure to check the expiration date before you travel. By taking these steps and being prepared, you can help ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your visa application process is stress-free and that you are able to enjoy your international travels with ease and peace of mind.

Tips to protect babies from harmful UV rays

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States and the fifth-most common worldwide. It only takes one blistering sunburn during childhood or adolescence to nearly double a person’s chance of developing melanoma later in life, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association.

Since babies are much more prone to sunburn than older kids, it’s especially important to protect them from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Megha Tollefson, M.D., a Mayo Clinic pediatric dermatologist, offers tips for keeping babies safe outdoors.

“Sunburns can be very painful,” Dr. Tollefson says. They can be a setup for infection if they’re fairly severe.” While sunburns are thought to be

short-term concerns, there are also long-term risks to sun exposure.

“The more UV exposure a child gets — especially the younger in life that it starts — and the more sunburns they have, the higher their risk for skin cancer later in life,” Dr. Tollefson says.

Sun protection in the first 20 years of life is the most crucial for protecting against long-term skin cancer risk.

For infants, it’s best to avoid peak sun hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If that’s not possible, cover the baby with shade or long-sleeved clothing and a hat.

Dr. Tollefson also recommends using sunscreen on areas of exposed skin.

“We would recommend that, at that age, parents use the sunscreens that have physical blockers rather than chemical blockers because they’re better for sensitive skin,” she says.

Look for titanium dioxide and zinc oxide when selecting a sunscreen for baby. Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours or right after swimming or sweating.

Enjoying time outdoors is important for good health. Staying protected from the sun will allow you and your baby to do so safely.

BOOST YOUR PATH TO MEDICAL SCHOOL

5 ACTIVITIES FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH A PASSION FOR MEDICINE

The Source FAMILY 42
Aerial view of SGU's Grenada campus

For students interested in pursuing a career in medicine, their performance in high school can have a significant impact on their future. But it is not only academic results that determine if a student could become a great doctor, the experiences they have, and attributes they exhibit, are also key. These factors are viewed in combination to consider how an individual might contribute value not only as a medical student but also as a future physician.

There are things high school pupils can do to set themselves up for success in medical school and beyond. St. George’s University (SGU), School of Medicine in Grenada, the Caribbean shares some of these steps to help students build their profile for a future in medicine.

Lay the foundation for academic success

It’s important to maintain strong results if they hope to get accepted into medical school. But achieving high grades shouldn’t be their only focus.

For students interested in pursuing a career in medicine, the high school subjects they choose to study can have a significant impact on their future. In order to become a doctor, students must have a strong foundation in several key subjects, including Biology, Chemistry, Math, Physics, and English. Understanding the relevance of these subjects to medicine, as well as how they will be expanded upon in medical school, can help students make informed decisions when choosing what educational streams or subjects to focus on.

Volunteer at a local hospital or healthcare facility

Amassing volunteer hours in a healthcare setting doesn’t just look good on medical school applications. It can give applicants

an opportunity to learn what’s required to care for others, no matter how simple the duties may be.

This type of exposure can be critical in helping students solidify their choice to pursue a career in medicine. Doctors will be the first to share that the duties of their jobs can be physically, mentally, and emotionally taxing. But, for many, the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others is more than enough motivation for them to overcome the challenges they encounter on the job.

Connect with practicing doctors

Students can get exposure to what it’s like working in a healthcare environment by shadowing a doctor, and they’ll also gain valuable insight into clinical care by observing the doctor-patient relationship firsthand. When shadowing a doctor, students get to observe the practitioner as they perform their clinical duties, giving a clear picture of what day-to-day practice may be like.

Many of our 20,000 alumni* at SGU volunteer in a program called ‘Speak to a Graduate’, which connects prospective students to SGU graduates over the phone, via video call, or email. These connections provide a great chance for aspiring medics to engage directly with healthcare professionals.

Participate in community events

Doctors dedicate their careers to preserving the health and wellness of their communities. In doing so, they interact reglaly with patients from all walks of life.

Lending a hand at local community events like blood drives or health fairs is always a good idea. Once again, this kind of proactive participation is something admissions committees love to see on an application. This would be an opportunity for students to gain some valuable experience in patient education, cultural competence in healthcare, and more.

Prepare for an English language test

The ability to use English competently is critical for the study and practice of medicine in an international setting. As written by the Institute for Healthcare Communication, “extensive research has shown that no matter how knowledgeable a clinician might be, if he or she is not able to open good communication with the patient, he or she may be of no help”. When a student applies to an international medical school, with the view to practice medicine in an English-speaking country, they should be able to demonstrate their proficiency in English. This is commonly done by passing a language test, such as the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Not every physician sets their sights on medical practice early in life. But those who do should take advantage and begin their preparation early. The more proactive aspiring medical students are, the better their start can be on their journey to becoming a doctor.

Pfizer rolls out ‘Know. Plan. Go.’ campaign in countries across the Gulf region to raise awareness on viral respiratory diseases and the steps people can take to help prevent severe illness. Viral respiratory infections often peak over winter, but some can circulate year-round1. It is crucial for individuals with pre-existing chronic diseases to establish a well-thought-out plan regarding their healthcare needs to avoid progression into severe viral respiratory infections and worsening disease prognosis.

People with certain underlying health conditions such as diabetes, heart or lung disease, high blood pressure, obesity, a weakened immune system, or being aged 60 and above, might be at higher risk of severe complications from common viral respiratory infections such as cold, flu or bronchiolitis. 2-3

Pfizer Launches ‘Know. Plan. Go.’ Campaign To Raise Awareness on Viral Respiratory Diseases across countries in the Gulf Region

If an individual knows that they or their loved ones may be more vulnerable to becoming very sick from viral respiratory infection, then it is time to make a plan if they start experiencing symptoms such as fever or chills, cough, congestion or runny nose, headache.

4 The plan evolves around knowing who to contact and where to go for treatment, and keeping an up-to-date list of any medications taken including vitamins and supplements and be ready to share with the healthcare professional. Acting on the plan quickly and speaking to the healthcare professional can be key in helping to prevent serious illness, which could include hospitalization.

Therefore, Pfizer’s ‘Know. Plan. Go.’ Campaign focuses on three pillars “Know if you or a loved one is at high risk for severe complications from viral respiratory infections,’ ‘Plan with your healthcare

professional in case you catch a viral infection’, and ‘Go to the doctor if you are experiencing symptoms to discuss what treatments might be suitable for your illness’. Know. Plan. Go encourages people to be proactive by being informed, prepared, and ready to act.

Dr Nadine Tarcha, Pfizer’s Gulf Medical Director, shares, “By shedding light on the importance of raising awareness for viral respiratory diseases in Gulf countries, we equip individuals with knowledge about transmission risks, symptoms, and prevention strategies. ‘Know. Plan. Go.’ empowers communities to make informed decisions, promotes early detection and treatment, and ultimately saves lives. Together, we can create a healthier and more resilient community.”
