5Eid Al Fitr Wellness Tips Recommended by Health Experts

The Source FAMILY 12

With the holy month of Ramadan coming to a close and Eid Al Fitr festivities on the horizon, health experts urge UAE residents to prioritise their wellbeing and practice moderation during this celebratory period. Teaming up with esteemed health professionals, Abu Dhabi 360 shares valuable insights into crucial health tips for maintaining wellbeing during Eid Al Fitr celebrations:

Gradually Transition to Regular Eating Habits:

After a month of fasting, it’s essential to reintroduce regular eating habits gradually. Abruptly reverting to pre-Ramadan dietary patterns may overwhelm the body, leading to digestive discomfort and unwanted weight gain. Dr. Mobarak recommends initiating the Eid festivities with light, easily digestible meals and progressively increasing food intake over subsequent days. Emphasising the consumption of nutrient-rich foods such as lean meats, fresh fruits, and vegetables aids in replenishing essential nutrients lost during fasting.

Stay Hydrated:

“Staying hydrated during Eid Al Fitr can be tricky, especially with the long days and soaring temperatures that accompany the celebration when it falls during the summer,” says Dr. Mobarak. Sipping water gradually throughout the day facilitates better absorption and hydration. “You can guard against dehydration in two ways: firstly, by taking fluids on board before dawn and after sunset, and secondly, by limiting the amount of water that you lose during the day,” she advises.

Manage Blood Sugar Levels:

For individuals managing diabetes, vigilant monitoring of blood sugar levels during Eid celebrations is imperative. Dr. Mobarak recommends incorporating foods with a lower glycemic index into festive meals to help stabilise blood sugar levels. Portion control and opting for whole grains like wholegrain basmati rice promote steady blood sugar regulation, ensuring a balanced approach to dietary indulgence during Eid festivities.

Prioritise Physical Activity:

Reinstating physical activity post-Ramadan is pivotal for maintaining overall health and vitality. Engaging in moderate exercises such as leisurely walks, outdoor games, or family-friendly activities not only aids in managing blood glucose levels but also enhances cardiovascular health and boosts mood. Dr. Michelle Champlin, Chief Podiatrist at the Dubai Podiatry Centre, underscores the transformative effects of daily exercise: “Walking, in particular, promotes circulation and overall well-being, making it a simple yet powerful activity for maintaining health.”

Practice Mindful Indulgence:

Beyond its religious significance, Eid Al Fitr serves as a time for introspection, celebration and gratitude, all of which have been linked to improved health outcomes, enhanced sleep quality, and improved emotional wellbeing. Dr. Haseeb Rohilla, MBBS, DCP, MPH, FRCPsych, Specialist Psychiatrist and Medical Director at Priory Wellbeing Centre Abu Dhabi, emphasises the transformative power of cultivating gratitude: “Taking moments of reflection to express gratitude for the presence of loved ones fosters a positive mindset and deepens the bonds of kinship during holiday gatherings.”

Use these WhatsApp codes to transform the way your text messages look

WhatsApp has introduced four brand-new text format options that will transform the way your messages look in the popular chat app. But tweaking the appearance of your text is easier said than done, since you’ll need to memorise the codes to get the correct format.

There’s no need to update WhatsApp, since these changes take place on its servers. You’ll be able to take advantage of all eight format options across all platforms, including Android, iPhone, WhatsApp Web, and Mac. The Channels broadcast feature will support the new formatting too.

Here’s what you’ll need to do to format your text messages...

Bullet Point Lists

Start a bulleted list by typing the “-” symbol followed by a space.

Pressing the Return key will add another bullet pointon a new line, while pressing Return a second time will end the bulleted list.

Numbered Lists

Similar to the bulleted list above, WhatsApp lets you create a numbered list by typing a digit followed by a full-stop and a space. For example: “1. “ then the first item in your list. Like with bullet points, pressing Return will add the next number in the sequence.

Block Quotes

To insert a block quote to highlight specific text in a longer message, or simply to ensure your message stands out in a busy group chat, type “>” and then a space.

Inline Code

This one might be a little niche, since it’s designed for coders to highlight a snippet of code by

placing it between two “`” symbols. This not only changes the font used in the WhatsApp message, but also adds a background to the text.

You’ll know whether you’ve typed the formatting code correctly into WhatsApp as the text should change in appearance in the preview before you send. If that doesn’t happen, then something has probably gone awry and you might need to try again.

Available now, WhatsApp users can send bullet-point and numbered lists in the chat app, which is used by over 2.5 billion people worldwide. Formatting for block quotes and inline codes to highlight and break up large blocks of text have also been introduced with the latest update.

The four new choices join the existing format options: bold, italics, strikethrough, and monospace.

TECH The Source FAMILY 22

Whatsapp has shared its text format codes in an easy to read table

WhatsApp has published a table with all of the codes needed to format your text messages. The newly added options are highlighted in green, while the others have been baked into WhatsApp for some time.

If these seem familiar, it’s likely because you used Markdown. This lightweight text format, developed by John Gruber and Aaron Swartz, is designed to be easy to readand can be easily converted to HTML.

The format is hugely popular with stripped-back writing apps, like Bear.

As a reminder, if you want to use any of the existing format options, here are the shortcuts you’ll need to take advantage of bold, italics, strikethrough, and monospace.

Bold

Type a “*” before and after the word that you’re trying to format in bold type. It works across multiple words, but make sure there’s not a space either side of the first or last word you want to see formatted in the final message

Italics

This one follows the same rules as the bold text above, but you’ll need to type a “_” before and after the final word that you’d like to see in italics

Strikethrough

Type a “~” before and after your chosen word to strike a line through the word. This one is a little trickier, as the ~ symbol is on the second page of special characters on most phone keyboards

Monospace

Like Inline Code, Monospace is an odd effect that’s unlikely to come up as often as the others. But if you fancy trying it out, you need to type a pair of “ before your chosen word. For examples “”example””.

The latest announcement follows a busy few weeks for WhatsApp. The Meta-owned service recently confirmed plans to lower the minimum age to sign-up for its chat app.

It also released a new privacy feature that lets iPhone and Android users set their voice notes to self-destruct as soon as the recipient has listened to the audio file once.

Abu Dhabi International Airport renamed to Zayed International Airport

The name change pays tribute to Sheikh Zayed’s remarkable legacy and history of accomplishments in introducing the UAE to the world

Abu Dhabi International Airport has been officially renamed as Zayed International Airport. Paying tribute to Sheikh Zayed’s remarkable legacy and history of accomplishments in introducing the UAE to the world, the new brand encompasses the richness of Emirati culture and Arabian heritage. Designed to provide an innovative and seamless airport experience, the renamed airport meets the highest standards of quality and traveller expectations.

His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan said: “We are immensely proud to rename Abu Dhabi’s largest airport in honour of the Founding Father of the UAE. The unsurpassed achievements of the late Sheikh Zayed in connecting our country to nations

around the world have inspired our commitment to ensuring that Abu Dhabi further strengthens its position as a world-leading hub for travel, trade, and commerce.

Opening its gates to the world, Zayed International Airport ushers in a new era for Abu Dhabi’s aviation sector. The airport’s state-of-the-art infrastructure delivers exceptional connectivity, innovation and sustainability for an elevated guest experience while propelling regional tourism, trade, and commerce to new heights.”

The new brand identity unveiled as part of the renaming celebrates the emirate of Abu Dhabi through shape and forms inspired by its landscape and history, as well as by the design

of the airport itself. A traditional dhow boat, a date palm tree, the desert sun, the Qasr Al Hosn Fort, and Terminal A – the iconic new terminal building – served as creative sources for the new logo, showcasing Abu Dhabi’s unique identity while inviting travellers to write their own story. The launch of Zayed International Airport’s new brand has been accompanied by video highlights of over 1,750 drones coming together in an air display to form the airport’s new logo.

With Terminal A, Zayed International Airport features one of the world’s largest terminals, capable of welcoming up to 45 million passengers per year and marking a new era for transport and aviation infrastructure in Abu Dhabi and the UAE. During the first 60 days after Termi-

The Source FAMILY 24

nal A became fully operational, Zayed International Airport welcomed 4.48 million passengers, with 1.21 million arrivals, 1.22 million departures, two million transfers and more than 24,000 flights. Zayed International Airport served 117 travel destinations in December 2023, an increase of 20% from 100 cities in 2022, due to a rapidly growing airline network of 28 international carriers.

With world-leading facilities, including biometric technology to streamline the screening and boarding process, 35,000 square metres of retail and F&B space, and 163 outlets for passengers to shop, dine and enjoy, Terminal A places passenger experience at the heart of operations at Zayed International Airport. Since the terminal’s opening in November 2023, numerous operational milestones were achieved, including delivery of

an enhanced level of service for travellers and the attraction of a growing roster of international airlines.

Overall, Abu Dhabi Airports’ passenger traffic results for 2023 show a significant increase in passenger demand. A total of 22,935,316 passengers flew through one of Abu Dhabi's five commercial airports over the period of 1 January to 31 December, marking a 44.5% increase in demand compared to 2022. The year also saw growth in other critical business areas, including Air Traffic Movements (ATMs) across the five airports.

The total number of ATMs, referring to the landing or taking-off of an aircraft, reached 226,362, surpassing the 2022 figure of 194,666 and reflecting a 16.3% increase year-on-year. In 2024 and beyond, Abu Dhabi Airports expects further growth in pas-

senger and cargo traffic, with Zayed International Airport’s enhanced aviation offering central to this positive outlook.

“During the first 60 days after Terminal A became fully operational, Zayed International Airport welcomed 4.48 million passengers, with 1.21 million arrivals, 1.22 million departures, two million transfers and more than 24,000 flights.”

Are you getting enough sleep?

New sleep survey by Premier Inn finds more than 40% of UAE residents are not getting enough quality sleep

A recent sleep survey conducted by Premier Inn Middle East in collaboration with Silentnight Arabia, UK's most trusted sleep brand, has revealed new insights into the sleep quality and habits of UAE residents. The survey, which polled more than 950 individuals ahead of Sleep Awareness Week and World Sleep Day on 15 March, shows that more than 40% of UAE residents are not getting the right amount of sleep and can improve their sleep quality significantly.

Simon Leigh, Managing Director, Premier Inn Middle East, said: “Our survey findings underscore the massive opportunity for people to enhance their sleep quality. At Premier Inn, we are invested in sleep and understand the crucial role it plays in overall well-being. Through our partnership with Silentnight Arabia, we're committed to providing our guests with cutting-edge sleep technology in our rooms and sleep tips to take home with.”

Quality of Sleep

While the majority of respondents (80%) reported that they feel as though they get a good’s night of sleep with 56% sleeping 6 to 8 hours per night, a whopping 41% sleep less than 6 hours per night.

Hannah Shore, sleep expert at Silentnight Arabia comments; “Adults should aim for 7 to 9 hours of good quality sleep per night, 6 hours is on the lower end. We must allow our bodies the right amount of time in each stage of sleep to fully recover - 5 cycles of 90 minutes per night. Deep sleep repairs the body physically whereas light sleep benefits the brain function and emotional processing.”

“Alarmingly, more than 40% of respondents sleep less than 6 hours per night. This substantial percentage questions the accuracy of self-perceived sleep quality. While most respondents rate their sleep as good or excellent, a high number is not getting the right amount of sleep and could improve their sleep quality significantly.”

Sleep Disturbances

A third (32%) of respondents indicated that they suffer from an irregular sleep schedule. Shore explains: “A consistent sleep schedule ensures a good night of sleep. Irregular sleep patterns, like late nights and weekend lie-ins, lead to social jetlag, making Monday mornings much tougher.”

Sleep can be disrupted by many factors; stress being number 1 in the survey (48%). “Stress triggers elevated levels of cortisol, which disrupts the production of sleep hormones. This response originates from our primal instincts: we only sleep when we feel safe.”

Temperature and climate also scored high on the survey (36%). “Maintaining a slightly cooler core body temperature is crucial for good quality sleep. While airconditioning is common in our hot climate, its noise and air drying effect can disrupt sleep.” Interestingly, almost 80% of people report that they sleep best in winter due to naturally lower temperatures, reducing the need for air conditioning.

HEALTH The Source FAMILY 26

Using electronic devices before bedtime also ranks high on the list (26%). “They aren’t as bad as often thought. While excessive blue light exposure can disturb sleep, content like meditation, podcasts, or familiar TV shows can actually be soothing.”

“Background noises at bedtime are beneficial, but they should be low in volume and have gentle tones to promote sleep. Noises like construction (25%) or traffic (24%) tend to alert us and cause wakenings.”

SLEEP HABITS

Sleep Routines

An effective wind-down routine helps the body and mind relax from the day's activities. The most popular sleep routine among respondents is to watch TV before bed (35%). Shore elaborates: “This can be a great way to help your brain switch off from the day, as long as it’s something familiar and comforting, like a re-run of Friends.”

Avoiding caffeine (34%) ranks second on the list. “Caffeine binds to brain receptors, telling us we're awake. But if consumed too close to bedtime, its effects might linger due to its long half-life, which can last up to 10 hours! When opting for herbal teas and juices (18%), make sure they are caffeine free.”

Evening routines should facilitate a decrease in body temperature. 23% of respondents actively lower the room temperature. “However, activities such as exercising (13%), hot baths and large meals can all cause spikes in our core body temperature, therefore we should avoid doing these too close to bedtime.”

Listening to podcasts or music (23%), and reading a book (15%) are also popular hobbies before bedtime.

Last thing before bed

34% of people brush their teeth as the last thing they do before bed. “This can actually be quite stimulating, says Shore, with bright bathroom lights and strong minty toothpaste waking

the body up again.”

Checking social media before bed ranks second with 29%. “Having a quick glance or watching some random videos might help certain people switch off from the day. Set a timer so you don’t lose too many valuable hours of sleep time. A substantial 25% of people end their day by saying a prayer which compliments a calm and relaxing wind-down routine.”

Going to bed

The majority of respondents (55%) reported going to bed between 10pm and midnight, while a significant number (27%) goes to sleep after midnight.

“The time which we go to bed is unique to each of us”, explains Shore. “It depends on the circadian rhythm, our internal body clock, that regulates our sleep-wake cycle and chronotype; morning or evening person. Chronotypes may change, shifting towards later sleep in adolescense – this is why teenagers lay in bed all day - and towards more morning-oriented routines in later stages of life.”

Waking up

Nearly half (47%) of the respondents wake up between 6am and 8am, and 36% between 4am and 6am. These wake-up times are most likely set by work and school schedules.

The big driving force for waking up is the alarm clock (81%), followed by family members or roommates (30%), light exposure (27%) and bird song (7%). Other wake-up aids include the sound of a kettle boiling, the smell of breakfast, the body's circadian rhythm, and the call to prayer.

Shore comments: “If people had a more regular sleeping pattern, their body would have a natural time at which it wakes up. We shouldn’t turn all alarms off, however, waking up a few minutes before your alarm is a sign of a good sleep routine. Bright morning light also helps people to rise and shine as it supresses the production of melatonin making us feel more awake.”

• TV and devices: Tech isn’t always bad. If you are using a device before bed, use it in eye comfort mode to create calming sounds, listen to podcasts or breathing exercises.

• Music, pink and white sounds: Certain sounds can help you fall asleep such as ocean waves, rainfall and a buzzing fan.

• Airconditioning: Dry air from the airconditioning can lead to dryness within the skin, throat and nose which can increase snoring. Using a humidifier can help.

• Socks: Bed socks can increase the blood circulation which can help with cooling the body down. Avoid the thicker ones!

• Earplugs: Invest in quality earplugs to block out construction and traffic noises if you live in an area prone to them.

• Sleep trackers: A great way to see how much sleep you are getting, however don’t rely on them too heavily as they can lead to sleep anxiety.

• Pillows: Pick the right pillow to match your sleeping style: front and back sleepers require thin pillows, while side sleepers need thicker ones to support the gap between the ear and shoulder edge.

• Bright Light: Bright light at sunrise can easily wake you by halting sleep hormone production. Use blackout blinds, curtains, or an eye mask at home to block out this brightness.

• Work: Taking work to bed can overstimulate our minds, making it hard to switch off. If you must work in your bedroom, set up a dedicated workspace to create separation between work and sleep.

• Bed sharing: When sharing a bed, you’ll have to prioritise each other’s sleep routines. Try separate duvets to create your own space to reduce partner disturbance.

Al Ain Municipality enters Guinness World Records

with largest bouquet of natural flowers

NEWS
The Source FAMILY 28

The Al Ain Municipality achieved a new Guinness World Record for the world’s largest bouquet of natural flowers showcased at the Al Ain Flower Festival, which runs until 14th March, 2024.

The municipality created a huge flower arrangement that covered 49 metres and had more than 7,000 blooms of different kinds, standing seven metres tall. This feat showed the city’s dedication to beautifying the natural environment and making the city a leading place for tourism and culture.

The Al Ain Flower Festival includes 40 units of illuminated flower sculptures that create a magical and unique atmosphere. It also features 11 innovative artworks distributed throughout the park, enriching the visitors’ experience with art and beauty.

The firing of these Ramadan cannons is a time-honoured tradition that dates back to the 1960s in the UAE. Each day a single shot is fired from each cannon to mark the end of the daily fast.

Cannons were used as a way to signal the end of the daily fast for people who lived in areas where they could not hear the call to prayer, as they can be heard up to 10km from where they are fired.

This special Ramadan tradition is well worth the visit. Cannons are fired daily at Jahili Fort and near the wedding hall in Zakher. If you are visiting the Jahli Fort location, parking is available across the street.
