2013-2014 Annual Report to the Community

2013/2014 YEAR IN REVIEW

Letter from

It’s amazing to think that almost two decades ago, with little more than the “can-do” spirit Las Vegas is known for, community leaders set out to bring a world-class performing arts center to our city, and two years ago, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts opened with great fanfare. Now, we have recognized another great milestone: We have welcomed one million guests through our grand doors. This was a project that many considered to be of utmost importance to the community, because it was built for the community. We have always seen this place as the “living room” for Las Vegas, one where residents from all parts of our valley can gather to be entertained and inspired. It has truly become this. We dreamed big, but it is the community’s support that has inspired us to keep reaching. Within just these two short years since opening, The Smith Center has surpassed many initial goals, and we look forward to fulfilling many more. For instance, we have welcomed more than 120,000 students for free performances, workshops and master classes since opening. Recently, we partnered with Teller (of Penn & Teller) and Harvard University’s American Repertory Theater to create The Tempest, which has gone on to tour around the US. And this season, we realize the dream of launching a national tour of a Broadway show with the Tony Award®-winning musical Kinky Boots. Along with performances, The Smith Center has hosted weddings, meetings and community events. This has been a place for marriage proposals, for reunions and for photographs. As we reflect over the last two years, we are overwhelmed with a special appreciation for this city. We are especially grateful to the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation for their vision; our board of directors, our donors and city leaders for their leadership; our season sponsors for their support; and of course, our patrons for embracing us. A million guests is a milestone, but it is only the beginning. Thank you again, Las Vegas, you are one in a million. The world has taken notice. We look forward to seeing you in “your living room.”

“I grew up in Las Vegas and believe The Smith Center is necessary for our community as it represents the city in a new light. It’s entertainment for the entire family. If this was around when I was younger it would have given me an incentive to pursue the performing arts at an early age.” -Daniel Barletta Musical Director, Calvary Chapel Christian School Photo by Geri Kodey

“The Smith Center has been such a wonderful addition to our community. I have enjoyed bringing my two young daughters to see live theater and music as well as special events such as the Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards. As a high school teacher, it was especially meaningful to attend the NVHSMTA and see my talented students perform on the Reynolds Hall stage in front of family, friends, peers and distinguished judges. We are looking forward to seeing many more performances and creating many more memories at The Smith Center.” - Dallas Johnston Teacher at Las Vegas Academy of the Arts Photo by Geri Kodey

EDUCATION

IS IN OUR

Students and their teachers attended performances at The Smith Center during the school year

“Attending a performance connected to a book lends value to a student’s reading comprehension and engagement. Cultural literature gives students a personal connection to the topic and significantly influences their reading performance. A theatrical production offers many opportunities for enrichment with a focus on creativity across the curriculum.” – Dr. Debra Ramos 2nd Grade Teacher, Ira J. Earl Elementary School

“Most of our students don’t get outside of our school neighborhood very often, so just the experience of riding a bus to The Smith Center is a big deal. It is great for them to have the opportunity to see art and enjoy the performing arts. The idea of getting dressed up to do something so special really excites them.” – Vanessa Price 1st Grade Teacher, Elaine Wynn Elementary School

“The best experiences in my life have been in the theater and on the stage. When I heard that I could be a part of allowing that to happen for many children throughout the city, there was no way I could pass up that opportunity. Being a teaching artist for The Smith Center has enriched my life ten-fold. Every little twinkling eye leaves a lasting imprint on my heart, which is fuller than I could have ever imagined it could be.” Early learning through the arts Artist Residency

Meet and greets held between artists and donors

“Being a docent, I get to share the story of The Smith Center with all kinds of people, some of whom have never been to a performance. When a group tours the center, we talk about the art, architecture, acoustics and experiences. I like to share my own stories of events and performances to illustrate points about the building.” - Claudia Newbury

“As a member of The Smith Center’s Board of Advisors, I have the opportunity to engage with the center in a more meaningful way than simply attending shows. We learn about upcoming events, hear from the people behind-the-scenes who make the center what it is and help advise on the opportunities and challenges The Smith Center faces as it continues to evolve.” - Dave Kirvin Kirvin Doak Communications

2013/2014 COMMUNITY SUPPORT NEARLY 25% of our operating budget comes from PRIVATE SUPPORT. Over the past year 918 DONORS stepped forward to support The Smith Center and help fill the gap between ticket revenue and the annual cost of operations. Members of the Carillon Circle and Friends of The Smith Center contributed $1,780,451 to help make THE ARTS AVAILABLE FOR ALL. This support allowed us to offer affordable ticket pricing and a diverse range of world-class performances. EDUCATION is at The Heart of The Smith Center. $610,642 was raised to build a strong performing arts-based education program for teachers and students throughout the valley. Corporate partners invested $1,196,958 to improve our QUALITY OF LIFE and the economic health of our city through this high-quality performing arts center that is embraced by the community.

“The Smith Center has been a catalyst for the excitement occurring downtown. Downtown restaurants and other venues benefit greatly from its existence and proximity to Fremont East and the Arts District. Having this venue downtown only means that more people will get to come and experience the excitement both before and after performances.” – Terry Murphy President, Strategic Solutions; Past President, Downtown Las Vegas Alliance; Honorary Consul of Ireland for Nevada

Recently, our community lost two great patrons of the performing arts. Jerry Ritholz-Jarvis and his friend Carole Hassell deeply loved the theater. During the opening night of The Smith Center, Jerry sat in the Grand Lobby and was overwhelmed with joy. He highly valued what The Smith Center brought to Southern Nevada and rarely missed a performance. Jerry and Carole are shown here enjoying a post-show meet and greet with Alan Alda.

“Fred and Mary Smith were two of my parents’ very closest friends when I was growing up in Las Vegas. When the fundraising started, my mother had already passed away, but my father was still alive and wanted to honor that friendship by becoming a Founder of The Smith Center. From opening night, to the next performance, every time I walk into that building I’m reminded of both of my parents, the Smiths and the incredible town I was lucky enough to be raised in.” – Gary Ackerman Gaudin Ford Broadway Las Vegas® Sponsor

The Smith Center values the extraordinary generosity of the many Capital Campaign donors who contributed to the building of this beautiful cultural centerpiece. Early in our dream, you believed in the promise of a performing arts center where our community would gather to be inspired for generations to come. Today, because of your support, we celebrate world-class performances in dance, music and theater. Together, we have forever changed the cultural experience in Southern Nevada, and we are proud to recognize your leadership giving in perpetuity through engraved messages on our great walls.

Looking We take being The Heart of the Arts® very seriously, and look forward to another great year of diverse programming and furthering our excellent education and outreach programs. High Quality Performances We will continue to offer incredible arts and entertainment programming and anticipate another good year for our resident companies - Nevada Ballet Theatre and the Las Vegas Philharmonic. Since opening, we’ve booked all kinds of programs, and the Las Vegas audience has voted with their ticket purchases. Based on their interests, we will offer the best in music, theater and dance, plus more family-friendly programming. Season highlights include the launch of the national tour of the Broadway hit, Kinky Boots, a return engagement of Wicked, a re-imagined version of Pippin, comic icon Jerry Lewis, Swiss movement troupe Mummenschanz, international singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, NPR humorist David Sedaris, platinum-selling artist Jackie Evancho, Grammy Award® winner Burt Bacharach, a new three-show family series, and many more. Yes, there is something here for everyone. Learning Through The Arts The education and outreach programs of The Smith Center provide students and teachers opportunities to make valuable connections to classroom learning through the arts. Arts education has been proven to enhance children’s mental and cognitive abilities, increase cultural understanding, develop social skills and improve performance across core curriculum areas. During the upcoming school year, we anticipate 65,000 students attending one of our nine student matinees. From School House Rocks, to Flat Stanley, to ImaginOcean, students will have the opportunity to experience performances by local, regional, national and international artists, designed to inspire and energize youth audiences. Additionally, students will be treated to performances by our resident companies. Through partnerships, we will continue to cultivate our future art patrons. As a Kennedy Center Partners in Education member, The Smith Center offers teachers across Southern Nevada information and strategies for arts-based learning. During the coming year, we expect to welcome more than 300 educators to participate in professional development workshops and classroom sessions. As one of the first regional venues to be awarded a partnership with the Disney Musicals in Schools program, the Education team will once again work with the Clark County School District to create a sustainable theater program for select at-risk schools. And of course, the education season will conclude with the profoundly entertaining and impactful Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards. A chance to acknowledge the effort and accomplishments of Nevada’s young performers, the highlight of the program is the selection of two students to attend the National High School Musical Theater Awards in New York City. There they participate in a Broadway boot camp taught by theater professionals and have the opportunity to perform on a real Broadway stage. Access to the Arts Part of The Smith Center’s mission is to make arts accessible for all. With our donors’ generous contributions, we strive to offer affordable ticket prices to the community at large. However ticket sales only cover about 75 percent of our operating budget. To preserve our beautiful venue and grow education and outreach programs, we must continue to rely on private support to cover the remaining 25 percent. In the coming year, we need your help to meet our goal of raising $4 million through gifts to the Annual Fund and through sponsorships. Tell a friend about your experience and the forever memories created at The Smith Center. Encourage others to buy tickets for performances. Advocate on behalf of the arts and arts education in our community and get involved. Demonstrate your appreciation for The Smith Center by becoming a member of the Annual Fund. Renew your contribution or make your first gift. The Smith Center is more than just its performance venues, it’s The Heart of the Arts®. Your commitment will help us sustain the programs that you enjoy so much and enhance the quality of life in Southern Nevada.

Thank you for your support. We can’t wait to explore all that is ahead.
