2023– 2024

There are reminders all around of the divisive times in which we live, but we should all be able to agree on this: The arts can be a uniting force for all mankind.
The Smith Center’s 2023-2024 fiscal year was another shining example of that ethos in action. It saw more than 320,000 people come to our campus for more than 400 performances and special events. And once they walked through the doors to Reynolds Hall or Boman Pavilion, the outside world faded away, at least for those hours spent inside our halls.
From an incredible Toyota Broadway Las Vegas® Series to luminary Reynolds Hall headliners to dazzling productions by our resident companies, the Las Vegas Philharmonic and Nevada Ballet Theatre, to the steady stream of talented Myron’s performers, our shows once again demonstrated the power the arts have to soothe and heal, especially when they take place in such majestic spaces.
And of course, the educational programming at the heart of The Smith Center’s mission continued ensuring that Southern Nevada’s artistic future is in good hands, bringing more than 50,000 students and teachers to our campus, where they were exposed to all that’s great and meaningful about arts and entertainment.
Once again, I’d like to thank our generous donors for their assistance in aiding with that mission – without you, this wouldn’t be possible.
Allow me to express my immense gratitude to our sponsors, including our Broadway Las Vegas® season sponsor Toyota, season supporter University Medical Center of Southern Nevada and Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino, which sponsors shows in Myron’s.
And I’d like to thank the entire community of inquisitive arts embracers and entertainment seekers, here in Las Vegas and far beyond, who continue to make The Smith Center such a vibrant place where fresh ideas are exchanged and absorbed. We can’t wait to see you all on campus in 2024-2025.

BEETLEJUICE
The Smith Center’s 2023-2024 Toyota Broadway Las Vegas® Series was another smashing success, bringing eight popular touring productions to town.
It kicked off with the local debut of Beetlejuice in August and concluded with longtime family favorite Peter Pan . In between, majestic Reynolds Hall played host to Les Misérables, Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations, Chicago, Funny Gir l, Come From Away and Girl From the North Country.
The season had audiences standing, vigorously applauding and excitedly awaiting the next installment of Broadway at The Smith Center.

STUDENTS AND TEACHERS WHO PARTICIPATED IN STUDENT MATINEES AT THE SMITH CENTER
The Smith Center’s education and outreach efforts took center stage during the 2023-2024 season. From sending two local high school students to the Jimmy Awards in New York City – where both reached the prestigious Top 40/Character Medley round – to launching a new student reporter program, the fruits of those labors were highly visible throughout the year.
And once again, buses lined up regularly outside The Smith Center, which hosted more than 50,000 students and educators for free matinee performances, continuing its mission of providing arts access and education to children across Southern Nevada.

For the first time ever, both of Nevada’s representatives at the Jimmy Awards in New York City were selected for the prestigious Character Medley round in the same year.
Out of 102 total participants, Bishop Gorman’s Luke Martin and Marie Munoz – who earned their way to the Big Apple by winning The Smith Center’s Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards – were among only 40 (20 actors and 20 actresses) chosen to perform onstage at Broadway’s famed Minskoff Theatre during an event livestreamed on both YouTube and Facebook.
Martin and Munoz both shined in the character medley spotlight – Martin performing “Who Am I” as Jean Valjean and Munoz performing On My Own” as Eponine, both from Les Misérables.
And then Jimmy Awards host Josh Groban read out the final four actors and actresses, all of whom would receive $5,000 scholarships and perform solos later in the night for the chance to win this year’s Best Performance by an Actor and Best Performance by an Actress awards. And Martin heard his name called out.
“It was like a dream,” said Martin, who sang “At the Fountain” from Sweet Smell of Success in the finals. “I've watched so many finalist videos, and I was in that place. … I kind of just blacked out. And then I just forgot about all the shock, all the nerves, and I just went for it.”

It’s hard to believe it’s been more than 12 years since our dream in the desert officially become a reality.
And yet, looking out over The Smith Center’s Symphony Park neighborhood, it feels like it surely must have been far longer, given how much has changed around us.
Construction is underway on both the nearby AC/Element Hotel – a joint Marriott/ Westin project – and the Cello Tower condominium project, and the proposed Las Vegas Museum of Art is gaining stream, spearheaded by one of The Smith Center’s own key benefactors, Elaine Wynn.
As those ventures come online, they’ll continue to bolster an area once home only to an abandoned railyard, until The Smith Center began working with the state, city and county to turn Symphony Park into the thriving core of Downtown Las Vegas.
Here on our campus, significant change is afoot, too. The Smith Center recently elected Jonathan Halkyard, Chief Financial Officer of MGM Resorts International, as its new Chairman of the Board. Halkyard, a longtime board member, succeeds Don Snyder, who has been the only Chairman of the Board during The Smith Center’s illustrious history.
It’s a win-win: Not only is The Smith Center’s future in the hands of a board led by the capable and talented Halkyard, but sitting right beside him will be Snyder, in his new executive committee role as Immediate Past Chair.
They’ll ensure that The Smith Center continues to find effective and efficient ways of educating the youth of Southern Nevada in the arts, while providing entertaining programming those throughout the Las Vegas valley and far beyond can enjoy on an almost nightly basis.
And lastly, the next time you show up for a Smith Center event in the mood for a tasty bite or drink, you’ll have a great new option: a Starbucks, set inside Boman Pavilion and owned and operated by The Smith Center itself. We’ll see you there.
