ANNUAL REPORT THE

2023 MILESTONE: OUR 1,000TH BROADWAY PERFORMANCE

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR CAN MAKE .

The Smith Center celebrated a FULL REBOUND IN THE 2022-2023 FISCAL YEAR, following its highly anticipated reopening in September 2021 after the longest shutdown of its history.

Southern Nevadans flocked to see all of the 11 dazzling productions of our 2022-2023 Broadway Las Vegas® Series. This marked our biggest Broadway season yet, and even included TWO NATIONAL TOUR LAUNCHES, a thrilling accomplishment to conclude our 10th anniversary year.

Our Reynolds Hall sold out for the milestone occasion of our 1,000TH BROADWAY PERFORMANCE, at the March 17 presentation of Broadway smash “Disney’s Frozen.” This serves as a testament to just how much audiences have embraced The Smith Center and its goal to bring the best of Broadway to Las Vegas.

While a packed lineup of acclaimed music, theater and dance shows earned rousing applause in Reynolds Hall, live-music fans also filled our intimate and newly refreshed Myron’s venue, where they enjoyed a wide array of globally recognized talent and Las Vegas favorites who perform there almost every night of the year.

On top of this, The Smith Center welcomed back tens of thousands of students and teachers to its campus for a myriad of in-person arts education experiences. These included student matinees, master classes and workshops, all hosted by the center’s Education and Outreach team.

In the spirit of our mission to make the arts accessible to all, we also returned to presenting in-person sensory inclusive programming, designed to accommodate audiences with physical, emotional, intellectual or developmental disabilities. This featured a special, SENSORY INCLUSIVE PERFORMANCE OF “DISNEY’S FROZEN,” WHICH SAW OUR LOBBY FILLED WITH ELSA COSTUMES and even garnered a national shout out in a segment by ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

In a moving ceremony, we hosted our EIGHTH AND FINAL HEART OF EDUCATION AWARDS recognizing hardworking Clark County School District educators, which included a KEYNOTE SPEECH BY GAYLE KING, CO-HOST OF “CBS MORNINGS.” We are very proud to have championed this program, and look forward to finding new ways to honor and celebrate outstanding educators in the years to come.

I can’t emphasize enough how the generous support from across our community proved vital in helping us to return to full stride. WE DEEPLY APPRECIATE YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS, as well as your continued faith in our role as Southern Nevada’s Heart of the Arts.

I would also like to recognize our Broadway season sponsors, TOYOTA and UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER of Southern Nevada, for their unwavering commitment to presenting the finest that theater has to offer.

I applaud all the devoted community members who helped The Smith Center achieve this incredible year. You have warmed our hearts with an outpouring of love for the performing arts, proving just how much they enrich and uplift all of our lives.

OUR BIGGEST BROADWAY SEASON YET

Building on 10 years of bringing top Broadway hits to Las Vegas, The Smith Center delivered its biggest Broadway season yet this past year, with 11 smash productions. Providing a total 17 weeks of Broadway, this season included LAUNCHING TWO NATIONAL TOURS at The Smith Center for acclaimed musicals “SIX” and “Jagged Little Pill.” These milestones directly reflect The Smith Center’s resilient subscriber base, and its role as a HIGHLY POPULAR STOP FOR TOURING PRODUCTIONS.

Marking the triumphant return of “Hamilton” — and with thrilling guest engagement like a champagne bar for “Moulin Rouge” — this also represented the center’s most inclusive season yet, with an array of highly diverse shows.

MYRON’S FINDS A NEW GROOVE

Myron’s at The Smith Center took on a fresh, new vibe, with audiences enjoying all-new seating, lighting and a reconceived menu at this intimate, 240-seat venue. Guests continued to enjoy acclaimed entertainers up close, and Myron’s ended the year with 140 top-quality performances spanning all musical tastes, including pop, jazz, world rhythms and the best of Broadway.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH

The Smith Center returned to presenting in-person student matinees for the first time in two years, following its virtual presentations during the pandemic. The center also offered remarkable new arts education opportunities that brought its community outreach to a whole new level. These included an acting class with “Hamilton” cast members, a master class with acclaimed conductor Kalena Bovell and the opportunity for theater students to watch the load-in of a Broadway production.

SENSORY INCLUSIVE PERFORMANCES

As part of its mission to make the arts accessible to all, The Smith Center continued to present a variety of sensory inclusive shows. Designed to accommodate audiences on the autism spectrum and with other sensory sensitivities, these shows provide a welcoming environment for community members who might not otherwise experience live theater. The Smith Center earned national attention when “Good Morning America" featured the center’s sold-out, sensory inclusive performance of Broadway hit “Disney’s Frozen.” Additional sensory inclusive performances included family shows like “The Pout-Pout Fish” and “The Gruffalo.”

Our sensory inclusive performance of Disney's Frozen was a hit with our patrons and the outpouring of gratitude was amazing. Here is an example of the impact of this organization-wide initiative:

We appreciate the opportunity to take my special needs daughter to Frozen. We felt normal. Avery my daughter wasn’t judged for her looks, her actions. She absolutely loved the performance, clapping the whole time and was just so attentive. It’s hard to have her attend public events. This one was only possible because of the very kind staff, welcoming environment, and just being around families similar to us.

HEART OF EDUCATION AWARDS

The Smith Center presented its Heart of Education Awards for the last time, capping eight years of honoring outstanding Clark County School District educators. Upholding the event’s tradition of celebrating hardworking teachers with the fanfare they deserve, the center recognized over 700 teachers with a red carpet ceremony featuring dazzling star power. This included keynote speaker Gayle King (acclaimed co-host of “CBS Mornings”), Broadway performer Jim Caruso as emcee, and showstopping performances by Vegas favorites like Clint Holmes.

TEACHERS WERE NOMINATED for Heart of Education Awards

I just wanted to give you a special thanks for putting on the Heart of Education awards for the past eight years. Without our teachers, we have no future. It was always a pleasure to see some of our most caring and talented teachers honored in the most beautiful venue in Las Vegas.

DISNEY MUSICALS IN SCHOOLS

For the first year since the lockdown, The Smith Center brought back its beloved Disney Musicals in Schools program, helping Title 1 elementary schools create their own musical-theater programs. Providing students with transformative theater experiences, this initiative benefits children by promoting teamwork, confidence and problem-solving.

The center’s teaching artists guided this year’s six participating schools on all aspects of putting on a musical, culminating with hundreds of students performing songs from their inaugural shows on The Smith Center stage.

NEVADA HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATER AWARDS

Talented students from across the state delivered electrifying performances at The Smith Center’s 11th-annual Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards, created to nurture the next generation of performers. The awards recognize Nevada’s top theater students and the many talents involved in high school theater productions, with awards distributed across 14 categories.

The Outstanding Lead Actor and Lead Actress awards went to Zoe McCracken and Riley Stannard, who received a complimentary, 10-day trip to New York City, where they represented Nevada in the national Jimmy Awards®, also known as the National High School Musical Theatre Awards. This experience included working directly with top industry professionals, as well as performing on Broadway at the prestigious Minskoff Theater. SCHOOLS

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Smith Center Members make so much possible with their vital contributions, and the center celebrated their generosity this past year with a variety of exclusive events.

This included the special season announcement event for the center’s 2023-2024 Broadway Las Vegas® Series, hosted by SiriusXM host and Broadway performer Seth Rudetsky.

Members also enjoyed a rare backstage experience when they indulged in high tea with two cast members from Broadway smash “Tina – The Tina Turner Musical,” who shared exciting, behind-the-scenes details and even led participants in a “Proud Mary” dance tutorial.

And Chairman's Club Members mingled with The Smith Center leadership team at the Chairman’s Celebration, where they were treated to an elegant dinner prepared by celebrity chef Todd English and his hospitality group.

LOOKING AHEAD

Southern Nevadans will witness an ongoing transformation of The Smith Center’s downtown neighborhood in the coming year. On the heels of Vic’s Las Vegas opening by The Smith Center on ITS EXPANDED CAMPUS , more changes lie ahead.

Southern Land Company is working on a 22-STORY TOWER and a FIVE-STORY, MIXED-USE APARTMENT COMPLEX near the center on Promenade Place. Red Ridge Development also plans to build a nearby multi-use project on City Parkway, including a 30-story condo tower and 150 apartment units, as well as office space, retail space, a grocery store and a 700-space parking garage. The Smith Center has much more in store, too.

Following the successful run of its Heart of Education Awards, THE SMITH CENTER WILL EXPLORE ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND REWARD SOUTHERN NEVADA EDUCATORS.

The center will also continue its recently launched CARE (Compassionate Arts Remaking Education) theater education program. Currently provided at three schools, this draws on lessons from social-emotional learning, trauma-informed care and literacy learning to support students in kindergarten to eighth grade.

And for the first time, The Smith Center will EXPAND ITS DISNEY MUSICALS IN SCHOOLS program to include middle schools.

And as an investor in new TONY-WINNING BROADWAY PRODUCTIONS , The Smith Center celebrates these shows going on tour this year, in anticipation of them visiting Las Vegas someday. The center expects high demand for its 2023-2024 Broadway Las Vegas® Series, which includes welcoming back Melissa Manchester as Mrs. Price in “Funny Girl.”

THANK YOU, DON SNYDER

A significant chapter of The Smith Center legacy draws to a close September 2024, with Don Snyder stepping down as Chairman of the Board, a role he has held since the center was only a dream.

A business titan who has shaped the growth of Las Vegas, Snyder served as an instrumental leader throughout the fundraising, construction and opening of The Smith Center.

Present at the meeting of community leaders who first envisioned a world-class performing arts center in Las Vegas, Snyder helped spearhead the $470 million fundraising campaign that involved private donations, collaborations with multiple tiers of government and support from The Reynolds Foundation.

Following the center’s opening in 2012, Snyder remained central in advancing the nonprofit’s mission. This included guiding its efforts with presenting acclaimed music, theater and dance productions, and in providing valuable arts education experiences.

Snyder hails The Smith Center as his “GREATEST LEGACY” in his autobiography.

“It’s not an overstatement to call this entire project a dream come true,” Snyder says. “It is the culmination of nearly a quarter century of meticulous planning, hard work, unwavering passion for the end goal and certainly some good karma.”

Even as he leaves the role of chairman, Snyder takes pride in knowing The Smith Center will continue as Southern Nevada’s Heart of the Arts for many years to come.

“From the very beginning, we said ‘THIS IS NOT JUST FOR THOSE OF US WHO LIVE HERE TODAY, BUT FOR OUR CHILDREN AND OUR GRANDCHILDREN’S CHILDREN,’” he says.
