The Smith Center offers a thrilling audience experience this year for our 10th anniversary.
Building on our immensely popular past Broadway seasons, we will present the biggest season yet of our Broadway Las Vegas® Series, with 11 smash productions – the most in our nonprofit’s history.
I can’t imagine a more meaningful time that we could do this.
Many of today’s top Broadway productions showcase the most diverse and inclusive casts in theater history, and several of our productions this season lead the way. Musical phenomenon “Hamilton,” returning to The Smith Center by high demand, offers a cast of predominantly Black and brown performers to reflect America’s diversity today.
Other groundbreaking productions headed to our stage support the LGBTQ+ community, like heartwarming musical “The Prom” and two-time Tony winner “Jagged Little Pill,” featuring Alanis Morissette’s many hits.
You can read more about Broadway’s inspiring evolution with inclusive casting in our program. I also invite you to enjoy our article discussing how The Smith Center team chose our season’s acclaimed productions, including Best Musical winner “Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” family favorite “Annie” and two-time Tony winner “Six.”
The Smith Center also continues to nurture the arts among younger generations. I offer sincere congratulations to this year’s winners of the center’s annual Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards, Kalena Blake and Dakota Renteria, who went on to represent Nevada at the national Jimmy Awards in New York City, with Dakota reaching the finalist round of the prestigious competition.
The Smith Center also honored dedicated educators with our seventh-annual Heart of Education Awards, recognizing outstanding Clark County School District teachers who have been tested as never before during the pandemic’s challenges.
Of course, nothing at The Smith Center would be possible without community support, especially from our volunteers. As a nonprofit, The Smith Center relies on volunteers to help with all of its operations, including ushering at performances and assisting with education and outreach programs.
If you love the performing arts, want to give back to your community or have an interest in making new friends, volunteering with The Smith Center could be a great fit. You can learn more about volunteering in our program and on our website, www.TheSmithCenter.com.
I also want to express a heartfelt thanks for the generous support from our sponsors and donors, including our Broadway sponsors Toyota and University Medical Center of Southern Nevada.
Thanks to this significant community support, I can’t wait to see how The Smith Center continues to shape the arts in our community for many years to come.
Sincerely,

How The Smith Center Chose a Season of Broadway Blockbusters
No doubt about it, Broadway is truly back.
After nearly two years of programming chaos from the pandemic, the theater industry finally stabilized – allowing The Smith Center to present a robust and dazzling lineup for its 2022-2023 Broadway Las Vegas® Series.
Packed with Tony-winning blockbusters, this new season offers 11 shows that include new titles fresh from Broadway, as well as timeless classics.
“I consider this our strongest season yet,” says Paul Beard, Smith Center programming advisor.
The season’s hit shows include anticipated productions that never made it to the stage in the 2019-2020 season, due to the center’s forced temporary closure. Beard takes pride in rescheduling them now.
“They’re great shows that deserve to be seen,” he says. “It feels wonderful. Theater is back.”
Read below about why The Smith Center selected these thrilling productions.
“THE PROM”
Synopsis: Four Broadway actors seeking to get back in the spotlight visit a conservative Indiana town to help a lesbian student banned from bringing her girlfriend to high school prom.
Paul’s Take: “This has become a very well-established musical, after Netflix released a film version starring Meryl Streep in 2020. But it’s a whole different experience to see this live. It has spirited, large-scale musical numbers — and its greatest asset by far is its humor. At its heart, this show has a beautiful message of inclusion that will be very meaningful for audiences.”
“HADESTOWN”
Synopsis: Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2019, this contemporary retelling of ancient Greek myths follows Orpheus traveling to the underworld to free his wife.
Paul’s Take: “This is a show where every production element came together just right. Singer-songwriter-playwright Anaïs Mitchell had been working on this for years as a concept album, and it evolved into a robust score mixing folk, jazz, blues, and Americana. As a musical, it all comes alive with dynamic choreography and lavish sets. It’s both emotionally and intellectually satisfying, a beautifully realized show.”
“JAGGED LITTLE PILL”
Synopsis: A family experiences pain, healing and empowerment, portrayed through songs from Alanis Morissette’s album “Jagged Little Pill,” which sold 33 million copies worldwide.
Paul’s Take: “First you have the talent of Anaïs Mitchell behind ‘Hadestown,’ and then you get the talent of music icon Alanis Morissette behind ‘Jagged Little Pill.’ It’s a well-told story with contemporary issues. Of course the songs are great, as the album inspiring this musical won two Grammys. And for anyone who doesn’t know Alanis’ music well, the show is a great narrative that will hold your interest – especially because it was written by Diablo Cody, who’s famous for writing smartly funny movies like ‘Juno.’”
“SIX”
Synopsis: The six wives of Henry VIII take the spotlight to give a modern, empowering retelling of their lives, presented as a pop concert.
Paul’s Take: “This musical was a sensation on the West End, and it has already gotten huge acclaim on Broadway. The show mixes highenergy music with female empowerment that couldn’t feel more relevant.”
“HAMILTON”
Synopsis: This musical phenomenon portrays the life of founding father Alexander Hamilton.
Paul’s Take: “We couldn’t come close to meeting demand when we presented this musical in 2018, and we’re thrilled to give more Southern Nevadans the chance to experience it. Those who see it again will only discover more to enjoy. This is one of the few shows I love watching again and again because everything — the book, the music, the set design, the choreography — is at the genius level.”
“ANNIE”
Synopsis: A spunky orphan girl finds a home with a New York millionaire during the Depression.
Paul’s Take: “We chose this specifically because it makes for such a perfect holiday show. Audiences can bring their whole family and make happy memories together. The fact that the show stars children makes it perfect as a first theatrical show for kids to see. It also has a heartwarming message that gets people into the holiday spirit.”
“HARPER LEE’S TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD”
Synopsis: Written by “West Wing” creator Aaron Sorkin, this adaptation of Harper Lee’s classic novel follows a widowed lawyer standing up to racism in 1930s Alabama.
Paul’s Take: “There’s good reason this production broke the record for the highestgrossing play in Broadway history. It’s not only thought-provoking and highly relevant for our time with strong social justice themes, but it’s also very entertaining. It’s a compelling show that audiences will find very satisfying.”
“MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL”
Synopsis: The 2021 Tony winner for Best Musical, this adaptation of the hit film starring Nicole Kidman portrays a penniless writer falling in love with a singer at the Moulin Rouge.
Paul’s Take: “This is an unrestrained spectacle of a show. The creators ran with all the elements that made the film so original, infusing a love story with rollicking pop tunes and dazzling visuals. This will surprise fans of the movie with new song selections.”
“DISNEY’S FROZEN”
Plot: Based on the hit Disney movie, two sisters are pulled apart by a mysterious secret and embark on adventures to bring their family together.
Paul’s Take: “This is among Disney’s best theatrical work. It’s a well-crafted show with high production values. It has groundbreaking set design and a solid story that will entertain adults, while also providing a great chance to introduce younger generations to theater. It will please fans of the movie and offers a fresh take with many new songs.”
“MEAN GIRLS”
Synopsis: This adaptation of the hit comedy film by “Saturday Night Live” alumnus Tina Fey tells the coming-of-age story of a teen who moves to the suburbs and takes on a pack of popular girls.
Paul’s Take: “This show is strong because it actually departs from the movie to keep the story fresh and relevant. Director Casey Nicholaw, who also gave us the hilarious musical ‘Something Rotten,’ shaped this live production into something wonderful, with clever dialogue and a message that aligns with social movements today. Whether or not you liked the film – and even if you’ve never seen it – this show is worth your time.”
“TINA – THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL”
Synopsis: This jukebox musical depicts Tina Turner’s journey in defying racism, sexism, ageism and an abusive marriage to become a rock ‘n’ roll icon.
Paul’s Take: “When I first saw this show, I knew Southern Nevada audiences would love it. The story of Tina Turner’s life is heart-rending and moving, and there is so much great music in this show to sustain and build the dramatic progression of her life. There have been many musicals about famous entertainers, but this is one of the best. Its focused writing and powerhouse musical numbers sustain it beautifully.”

Broadway Productions
Make Historic Leaps to Promote Inclusivity
Nothing inspires future performers like seeing themselves represented on stage.
Now, audience members across many races, abilities, and backgrounds can find performers to relate with, as leading Broadway productions present the most diverse and inclusive casts in theater history.
And with good reason. Without inclusion, great talent can be overlooked. And showcasing a diversity of performers enhances audiences’ experience, allowing them to enjoy the mesmerizing work of all actors who enrich lives through their powerful performances.
Read below just a few examples of how Broadway productions increasingly embrace inclusivity.
REPRESENTING ALL RACES
More and more, smash Broadway shows star talented performers across a variety of races and ethnicities.
Musical phenomenon “Hamilton” — returning to The Smith Center October 18 to November 6 — serves as a prime example, with its cast of predominantly Black and brown actors depicting the history of America, while celebrating the country’s diversity today. The show’s Puerto Rican creator Lin-Manuel Miranda starred as Alexander Hamilton in the original cast.
Manuel’s four-time Tony-winning Broadway musical “In the Heights” also made headlines with its diverse cast, intended to accurately represent Washington Heights’ immigrant and Latino community.
Beyond this, classic Broadway productions now embrace diverse casting with famous roles. Emilie Kouatchou recently made history as the first Black woman cast as the heroine Christine in “The Phantom of the Opera,” Broadway’s longest-running production.
Beloved Broadway musical “Wicked” also cast Brittney Johnson as the first Black woman to play the show’s costarring role of Glinda, and Keke Palmer slipped on glass slippers as the first Black woman to star on Broadway in “Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella.”
Representation continues behind the scenes, too. When Broadway reopened in 2021, its lineup included seven new plays, all by Black playwrights.
SPOTLIGHTING ACTORS WITH DISABILITIES
For anyone who thinks performers with disabilities can’t steal the show, they can think again.
Wheelchair-bound since age 2 from a car accident – which left her paralyzed from the chest down – Ali Stoker earned instant acclaim for her powerful vocals and magnetic presence while costarring as Ado Annie in the Broadway revival of “Oklahoma.”
Stoker not only became the first actor in a wheelchair to perform on a Broadway stage, but also the first to win a Tony Award in 2019.
“This award is for every kid who is watching tonight who has a disability, who has a limitation or a challenge, who has been waiting to see themselves represented in this arena — you are,” Stoker announced in her inspiring acceptance speech.
More Broadway productions now welcome actors with disabilities. Aaron Sorkin’s acclaimed Broadway play “Harper Lee’s
To Kill A Mockingbird,” visiting The Smith Center January 10 to 15, features deaf actor Russell Harvard playing the roles of Link Deas and Boo Radley.
And the recent hit Broadway production “A Christmas Carol,” which also came to The Smith Center, featured child actors with cerebral palsy to portray Tiny Tim, ensuring an accurate depiction of a child with a disability.
CELEBRATING LGBTQ TALENT
Heartwarming Broadway musical “The Prom” achieves an impressive accomplishment, by telling an uproarious story that also champions inclusivity in its portrayal of a lesbian teenager fighting for her right to take her girlfriend to prom.
Part of The Smith Center’s 2022-2023 Broadway season, “The Prom” serves as just one of many Broadway productions supporting and showcasing LGBTQ stories and performers.
Megahit musical “Jagged Little Pill,” visiting The Smith Center September 6 to 11, also portrays a character on an emotional journey exploring gender.
And the new, Tony-winning Best Musical “A Strange Loop” not only follows the story of a Black, gay writer (who’s writing a musical about a Black, gay writer), but it also costars openly trans actor L Morgan Lee, whose performance made her the first trans actor to earn a Tony nomination.
Nonbinary playwright and performer Taylor Mac also earned a Tony nomination in 2019 for penning acclaimed Broadway play “Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus,” starring Nathan Lane.
And groundbreaking Broadway play “Straight White Men” – the first Broadway play written by an Asian-American woman – featured nonbinary activist-performer Kate Bornstein and Native American trans actor Ty Defoe in roles specifically written for them.
With each of these productions, Broadway continues to prove how much theater enriches the lives of all.
This award is for every kid who is watching tonight who has a disability, who has a limitation or a challenge, who has been waiting to see themselves represented in this arena — you are,” Stoker announced in her inspiring acceptance speech.

Tina! The Tina Turner Musical
Moulin Rouge!
The
Musical: MAKING A STAGE SPECTACULAR
By David CoteIn its epoch-hopping score and dazzling visuals, the Tony-winning Moulin Rouge! The Musical represents the missing link from Belle Époque Paris to Broadway today, from operetta to the modern musical. More than 160 years of popular song, from Offenbach to Lady Gaga: That’s the raw material the creative team took and remixed into one thrilling, dramatic voice.
Moulin Rouge! began, of course, as Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin’s groundbreaking 2001 film. Inspired by the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, Luhrmann hit upon fin-de-siècle Paris, and the real-life club became the center of a story about a small-town poet named Christian who comes to Paris, joins the Bohemians, and falls in love with Moulin Rouge’s house diva Satine. In this ravishing fable, love conquers all and we witness the importance of living for Truth, Beauty, Freedom, and Love.
And for the words of its poet? Luhrmann used the lyrics of the greatest pop love songs.
Instantly iconic, the film was a global hit. But would Moulin Rouge! live only on celluloid? Everyone agreed that its mix of glamour and grit made the dance-filled backstage drama perfect for Broadway.
Of course, everything was dependent on fearless producers who could secure rights to dozens of songs that would make up the once-in-a-lifetime score. Carmen Pavlovic and business partner Gerry Ryan were up for it. The Australian-born co-founders of Global Creatures (Walking With Dinosaurs) first met Luhrmann and Martin in 2009, eager to throw their hats in the ring as producers of the stage version.
Knowing that he didn’t want to direct the stage version himself, Luhrmann gave the acclaimed young director Alex Timbers his blessing to re-envision the world. Timbers and the producers quickly assembled a dream team, a cadre of 21st century New Bohemians.
John Logan was appointed to write the book. The award-winning writer had long proved his genius at infusing distant times with contemporary relevance, from imperial Rome (Gladiator) to gothic Victoriana (Penny Dreadful).
As music supervisor, Timbers needed someone to curate and weave together pop hits of the past decade and more. He chose Justin Levine, a frequent collaborator and song savant whose taste in music bridged centuries.
And to get the world on its feet, bumping and grinding to “Lady Marmalade” or strutting to a Rolling Stones medley, the fearless Sonya Tayeh was picked, a newcomer to Broadway but already an experienced choreographer who had designed steps for Madonna, Kylie Minogue, and Miley Cyrus.
Now you’re a part of the movement. An absinthe-streaked love letter to Broadway fans, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is aimed at an audience eager for mythic pop spectacle, for more passion, more glamour, more everything. All are welcome at this club.
David Cote is the author of the Moulin Rouge! The Musical: The Story of the Broadway Spectacular (Rizzoli). David is a New Yorkbased theater and TV critic who writes for The A.V. Club, Observer, and 4 Columns. He’s also a playwright and opera librettist, and author of books about the making of Spring Awakening, Jersey Boys, and Wicked.
“MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL” SYNOPSIS
Christian, a young composer, falls in love with Satine, a dazzling actress and one of Paris’s most beautiful, well-known stars. Based on the 2001 film, “Moulin Rouge!” directed by Baz Luhrmann and co-written by Craig Pearce, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is set in Paris, France, at the turn of the 20th century during the Belle Epoque era (1871 – 1914). It is a celebration of truth, beauty, freedom and love amidst the glamorous, garish, and gaudy underworld of the Moulin Rouge, Paris’s infamous Bohemian nightclub.
THE STORY
Paris, France, 1899. Christian, a young man from America, arrives in Paris, hoping to start a successful and sustaining career as a writer. While in Paris, he meets the Bohemians Toulouse-Lautrec and Santiago, who tell him that he should write a musical so that they can showcase it at the famous nightclub, the Moulin Rouge. Upon arriving at the nightclub, Christian sets eyes on Satine, the most alluring, bright, and beautiful star entertainer of the Moulin Rouge, and falls deeply in love. After a short time, Satine feels the love-pull and returns her affection to Christian. Meanwhile, Moulin Rouge’s impresario, owner, and enigmatic host, Harold Zidler asks a wealthy Duke to financially invest a substantial sum of money to help pay off the club’s debts and transform the Moulin Rouge into ‘le grand lieu de théâtre’ that it was meant to be. The Duke agrees ONLY if he can lay claim to Satine as well. With this proclamation, Christian and Satine’s love, as well as their desires, are overpowered, and Satine is forced by circumstance to conjoin with the Duke. Adding to this tricky love triangle, Satine develops a severe illness (Consumption), which progressively worsens throughout the story, challenging the fate of love itself.

A BRIEF HISTORY
A Brief History
The Moulin Rouge club you will see in the theatre tonight is a work of theatrical imagination in the spirit of the Moulin Rouge of Paris. Here’s a brief history of that emblematic venue.
▪ October 6, 1889: The Moulin Rouge opens at the foot of the Montmartre hill. The aim of its founders, Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler, is to allow the very rich to come and slum it in a fashionable district, where people live differently from other parts of Paris. The place attracts men and women, the middle classes and rich foreigners passing through Paris, as well as artists and ordinary folk. The French cancan, a new dance inspired by the quadrille, enchanted the spectators. Nicknamed “The First Palace of Women” by Oller and Zidler, the cabaret quickly becomes a great success.
▪ The first revue, Circassiens et Circassiennes, is launched in April 1890 . ToulouseLautrec creates the posters for the Moulin Rouge from 1891, the first being La Goulue
▪ July 29, 1907: First appearance of Mistinguett at the Moulin Rouge in the Revue de la Femme.
▪ After the First World War, Francis Salabert takes charge of the Moulin Rouge. The venue experiences a new popularity thanks to Jacques-Charles and Mistinguett. As the artistic director of the Moulin Rouge, Mistinguett sets a new standard for spectacular revue shows that will inspire Las Vegas venues for nearly a century. American revues, including the Hoffmann Girls, are put on for the first time in Paris.
▪ In the 1930s, the ballroom is transformed into the most ultra-modern nightclub of the time. The Moulin Rouge welcomes the Cotton Club in 1937.
▪ June 22, 1951: Georges France, called Jo France, acquires the Moulin Rouge and starts major renovation work. The birthplace of the French cancan now hosts major international artists.
▪ 1955: Jo France transfers the Moulin Rouge to the brothers Joseph and Louis Clérico. The famous French cancan is still performed, soon choreographed by Ruggero Angeletti and danced by the Doriss Girls.
▪ 1962: Jacki Clérico, son of Joseph Clérico, takes charge of the Moulin Rouge. It is the start of a new era: enlargement of the auditorium, installation of a giant aquarium and the first aquatic ballet. Frou Frou of 1963 and its ensuing success marked the beginning of the series of shows beginning with an “F,” their lucky letter, including ten shows up to the latest revue.

The Smith Center Honors Teachers Defying Incredible Odds at Heart of Education Awards
Over 700 finalists enjoyed a night of surprises and thrilling entertainment at The Smith Center’s seventh-annual Heart of Education Awards, honoring outstanding Clark County School District educators. Hosted by Emmy-winning news anchor Monica Jackson, the night included surprise keynote speaker Mo Rocca — the award-winning CBS news correspondent — in addition to performances by Grammy-nominated vocalist Clint Holmes and Las Vegas High School’s nationally acclaimed Mariachi Joya band. Thanks to the generous support of The Rogers Foundation, the top 20 educators each received medallions and a $5,000 cash award, with a $1,000 donation given to their schools.
The Smith Center Celebrates the State’s Top Musical Theater Students at Tenth-Annual Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards
High-energy singing and acting performances by talented musical theater students from 12 Nevada high schools highlighted the tenth-annual Nevada High School Musical Theater Awards, recognizing Nevada’s top musical theater students and the many talents involved with high school theater productions. Hosted by Smith Center president and CEO Myron Martin, the annual awards event featured 12 Outstanding Lead finalists selected from 20 nominees performing solos on the Reynolds Hall stage, as well as ensemble performances from select high school theater productions. A team of impartial theater professionals, including Grammy-nominated vocalist Clint Holmes, served as judges for the event’s 14 award categories, which included honors for Outstanding Lead Actor and Outstanding Lead Actress. Singer-songwriter and Jersey Boys music director Keith Thompson served as the event’s co-host.
How Myron’s became one of Las Vegas’ best music rooms
The sound in the room is like musical velvet.
Far less smooth? Making it so.
“Some of my most difficult conversations with the design team early on had to do with Cabaret Jazz,” acknowledges Myron Martin, speaking about creation of the most intimate venue in The Smith Center, “because I envisioned an extraordinary room for music with perfect acoustics.”
“I had my whole vision for it,” he continues, “and early on, the design team was kind of picturing something not unlike a medium-sized hotel ballroom. I had some tough conversations about it because we’ve got plenty of those spaces in Las Vegas. I wanted a music room.”
And a music room he’d get (so much so that it would be rechristened Myron’s in July 2021).
The idea: to create a cozy, 230-seat space featuring largely — but exclusively — jazz-based performers in a space that emphasized acoustics above all else.
“The sound is unbeatable in this city,” says singer Frankie Moreno, who’s played The Smith Center more than any other performer, including 100 sold-out shows at Myron’s.
For someone like Moreno, who tours nationally and was coming off a big production show at The Strat when he first hit the stage at Myron’s, playing there is a way to home in on his performance.
“At first, I was a little worried that I was not delivering enough,” Moreno says of his debut in the room, “’cause I just came off this whole big thing with videos and everything, and it was like, ‘Oh, I can just play music and be an artist.’”
During one 10-week run of shows at Myron’s four years ago, Moreno made new songs for every single performance, penning 100 tunes in three months, a remarkable feat that resulted in a slew of No. 1 records for the singer-songwriter for singles such as “Everything” and “Disguise,” both of which topped the iTunes blues charts.
“We ultimately took those songs and recorded them, made records that have gone on to become gold records for us now, but I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do that if I didn’t have a venue that allowed me to do that,” Moreno explains. “That changed my game. That led to a big change in my career for getting hit records.
“I owe that to The Smith Center,” he continues. “It’s the perfect venue to have complete artistic freedom. They nailed what they set out to do.”
FIND YOUR GROOVE AT THE MOST INTIMATE VENUE IN VEGAS.
At Myron’s at The Smith Center, every seat is spectacular. It’s a cozy, intimate venue where you’ll feel like you’re getting a personal performance from renowned Broadway performers one night and Jazz greats the next, all while enjoying craft cocktails and tantalizing eats.
EAT. DRINK. GROOVE. # MyronsMaking an Impact — and Making Friends — by Volunteering with The Smith Center
Claudia Newbury knew she wanted to volunteer at The Smith Center the first time she stepped foot in its Grand Lobby in 2012.
“I describe it when I do tours as ‘a happy building,’” Newbury says. “You walk in and you just smile because it’s such a beautiful place. The people are so nice, and there are so many things going on.”
As a nonprofit, the center relies on hundreds of volunteers to support its operations — including presenting hundreds of performances each year and providing education and outreach initiatives impacting over one million students and teachers.
By volunteering, Newbury takes pride in playing a role with all of this.
She watches exuberant kids enjoy their first taste of the arts by assisting with education events. She shares the center’s fascinating history with community members as a tour docent. She even gets to watch world-class shows as a volunteer usher.
Perhaps best of all, Newbury has become a part of the tight-knit volunteer family at The Smith Center, who enjoy a close camaraderie through their shared love of the arts.
“Volunteering at The Smith Center gives me the opportunity to share my love of the arts with others,” Newbury says.
HONORING EXCEPTIONAL VOLUNTEERS
With many ways to volunteer at The Smith Center — including as an usher, tour docent
and assisting with education programs and special events — some volunteer hundreds to thousands of hours.
The Smith Center honored these exceptional individuals at its 2022 Volunteer Appreciation Celebration, held every April to commemorate National Volunteer Week.
Newbury, Steve Smith, and the late Larry LeBlanc each received the prestigious, national President’s Volunteer Service Lifetime Achievement Award for volunteering over 4,000 hours (with LeBlanc receiving his posthumously).
Other outstanding volunteers received silver awards (for 200 to 499 service hours) and bronze awards (for 100 to 199 service hours). Silver recipients included: Patricia Fejer, Lisa Link, Maria Marino, Linda Shaffer, Josephine
Sittig and Gail Van Luit. Bronze recipients included: Christian Gueffier, Cheryl Hartfield, and David Rodriguez.
In addition, Hartfield received the first-ever Larry LeBlanc Award for Service Excellence, created in honor of LeBlanc’s legacy to celebrate volunteers who go above and beyond the call of duty at The Smith Center.
“It’s about the giving of yourself and helping the community that you love,” Hartfield says.
GIVING BACK AND MAKING FRIENDS
Community members cite many reasons for volunteering at The Smith Center.
These include promoting the arts, giving back to their community, and bonding with their fellow volunteers.
Often volunteering for The Smith Center as an usher and a community ambassador, Smith believes in supporting the center as a performing arts resource for Southern Nevadans.
“Even though there are a lot of entertainment options in the Vegas area, there is a need for Broadway shows,” Smith says.
Hartfield volunteers frequently because of her lifelong love for musicals, she says, and she finds it rewarding to provide a service and engage with fellow art lovers.
“People give me energy, and that’s why I like volunteering,” Hartfield says. “Just taking a few minutes to help someone can give them a real experience.”
And Newbury’s favorite volunteer moments stem from ushering at the center’s student matinees.
“You get high fives and hugs from kindergarteners who have never been to a theater before,” Newbury says. “It warms your heart, and you go home feeling you’ve actually done something worthwhile.”
