THE HUNGER & SCOUT BAR: Clear Lake Continues A Musical Legacy By Sarah Piña The Hunger is a name many all over the world know. The hugely successful industrial rock band from Clear Lake, founded by brothers Thomas and Jeff Wilson along with Brian Albritton, rose to fame in the early 90s with hit songs such as “Shock,” “Shoot to Kill,” and “Never Again,” and has continued to tour in recent years with bands such as Ministry, Bush, Chevelle, Three Days Grace, and POD.

Scout Bar is also a name many recognize in Clear Lake and beyond. Over the past 12 years, it has evolved into a premiere rock performance venue and even has become a location that many bands have utilized for their music videos. True to the name, Scout Bar has sought out several upand-coming bands of all genres. By Sarah Piña Baytown Grito Fest—an annual city tradition filled with award-winning mariachis, Tejano and cumbia bands, food vendors, arts and crafts, kids’ activities, and various entertaining contests – is sure to be a blast for the whole family! But wait – what’s a “grito,” you may ask? A grito is essentially a Mexican cry or yell that carries power, energy, pain and joy all in one long reverberating sound. The competition is such that some people even hire grito coaches in preparation for their contests! But it’s so much more than that. At Grito Fest, contestants vie for top honors by shouting as long as they possibly can, some 30 seconds or longer, in an homage to what is said to have started the Mexican Revolution in 1810. - Continued on Page 44

Facepainted dopplegangers Kiss Alike shout it out loud right after Journey tribute band Escape goes its separate ways. Local recording artists Victim, Southbound 45 and The Band Hennessy showcase original material along with their favorite classic covers. School of Rock students kick things off when the gates open at 11 a.m.

Rally leaders Hugh Lazenberry, Mark Cole and Nikki Ameigh say the idea came while hanging out with the “BarWash Crue” of regulars and friends at Hugh's landmark Hwy. 646 business, Hugh & Jeff’s Car Wash and Grill. “We put on concert events every weekend at Hugh & Jeff’s, so that gave us the confidence to put together something bigger,” Lazenberry said. And the food trucks? “They’ve really caught on in Houston and spread to Galveston. I’d never seen the two (tribute band concerts and food trucks) combined,” said Cole. It’s a win-win for rally attendees and food truck operators, Ameigh says: Attendees get to sample great food with their live music, while aspiring chefs can connect with new fans. To sweeten the pot, operators will compete for several cash prizes, including a $10,000 grand prize for best original dish. That’s a lot of dough. The HMN Events team said they envision “an absolute festival atmosphere.” The headlining sponsor, Miller Lite, should help toward that goal. Local classic rock radio station The Eagle 106.9 FM will also be broadcasting with live remotes there.

TEAM EFFORT: Hugh Lazenberry didn’t jump into this concept alone. Two of his “Crue” at the car wash started a brainstorming session. From there, Lazenberry, Mark Cole and Nikki Ameigh, formed HMN Events to bring the idea to life.

“Doc Rock” Stephens of Piledrive Productions will manage the stage while Clear Lake Shores Food Truck Park’s Billy Flanagan wrangles food vendors. Lazenberry said his son, Hugh & Jeff’s general manager, Hugh, Jr., is responsible for deftly dealing with Miller Lite, which “has really dug in with us.” KIDS AND THINGS: Thinking of bringing along your young classic rock fan? After all, School of Rock students will be performing. And what grade-schooler doesn’t love KISS? That said, there won’t be bouncy houses. HMN Events rates the Rally as “kid accessible,” so make sure everyone is up to the challenge of a daylong rock festival before buying them a ticket. Other than that, all you’ll need is cash, sunscreen, and a blanket or lawn chairs - that is, if you plan on sitting down, oldster. There are no coolers allowed inside. ROCK FOR A CAUSE: The event benefits more than attendees’ ears and bellies. Rally organizers have partnered with causes benefitting “cops, vets and pets”: A local chapter of the Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club is raising funds to help women’s shelters; the Lone Survivor Foundation, which gives back to wounded warriors; and the Galveston Island Humane Society, because “We all love animals,” said Lazenberry.

What do you love about working at Palapas? I’m from a small coastal town in south Texas (Palacios). I love being close to the water. I love going to the upstairs balcony and looking at the water. Plus the people in Kemah are great. My regulars are awesome and treat you like family. YOUR favorite day of the week to work? I love working Fridays and Saturdays. We are always busy with new people every week. Plus, there are always events of some kind, either pub crawls or some kind of festival. It keeps things interesting. Top 3 drinks you recommend to customers at Palapas? People like drinking the oatmeal cookie, and white gummy bears shots, or the Caribbean Fantasy drink. Do you have a signature drink? The one people ask for the most is either the Snow Cone drink or the War Head shot.

5 words that describe you: Motivated, determined, aggressive, honest, and sincere.

Are there any new drinks you're excited about? Yes, actually I’m very interested in the new beer cocktails that are coming out now. I’m not talking about the ginger beer stuff but like the electric lemonade with Leinenkugel Summer Shady or the Angry Sailor which is Sailor Jerry, Sour Apple and Angry Orchard Cider.

Favorite thing about the Bay Area? Being so close to the water is a huge plus; also the nightlife here is great. Even during the day there is always something to do with the Boardwalk down the street, and all the thrift surrounding us. And the people around this area are really my favorite; I have met some of the most genuine people in this area.

What do you do when not at work? I have been doing Gracie Jiu Jitsu for a long time now. Longer than I have been bartending. Plus I love to fish, hunt or go camping. Really anything outside – no wonder I ended up at Palapas.

What do you love about bartending? I love meeting new people and this is the perfect job and place for that. Our regulars really make this place feel like home and welcome everybody with open arms. Plus, on the weekends I like to test myself to see how fast and precise I can be.

The most amusing or weird question you have ever been asked by a customer? Oh, wow! I don’t know, to tell you the truth. One time, I asked a girl what her favorite flavor was so I could make her something she would like, her response was blue.

Who inspires you? My dad and my two sisters. We are a super competitive family, so it’s a constant competition with one another, which I love. I’m really a self-motivated person. I strive to be the best at whatever I do.

What’s more is the incredible star power Grito Fest continues to draw. This year, Houston-based award-winning Mariachi Los Gallitos, who are recognized internationally and have performed for everyone from former U.S. presidents to the Queen of England, will open the festival at 4 p.m. H.O.L.A. Ballet Folkorico will also take the stage to perform traditional Mexican dances. Then, the Grammy-award and Tejano Music Award-winning Hometown Boys hailing from Lubbock will follow, leading up to the major headliner of the event: Elektro Kumbia. The group is the newest creation of A.B. Quintanilla, brother of the late Queen of Tejano, Selena Quintanilla Pérez. Elektro Kumbia will deliver their unique blend of cumbia, Tejano, hip-hop, reggae and Latin pop to the festival, and will give revelers a chance to shake it up until 10 p.m. when the festival wraps up. This is the experience one can expect at DUO Winery & Cider Co. Having just opened in July, they have already garnered the buzz of many locals. A family business owned by Craig and Raquel Jarmosco, DUO (the name symbolic of partnership on many levels, both personal and professional), is an extension of the family vineyard that has existed in Michigan for over 45 years. “All of the wines are grown from European grapes in Michigan soils,” noted Craig, who along with his wife Raquel (both of whom have resided in Texas for 14 years now) originally had the idea for what would become DUO only a few years before. - Continued on Page 35

Greetings good people! So far, it looks like we survived another Houston summer, enjoyed some splendid Olympics, hanging in there with the baseball wild card race and borrowing from Paul Thorn, everybody is “looking good at the starting line” with football season kickoff around the corner. Before we move on, let’s run down some of what all went down in August.

LIGHTHOUSE DISTRICT: With school back in session and the drive into the Lighthouse District once again manageable, we dropped in to catch Steve Shannon and Starr Jernigan on the stage at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack with perhaps one of the deepest playlists of American folk and acoustic hippie Steve Shannon @ Crazy Alan’s

Both of these two are fully capable of handling lead guitar & vocal duties which makes for some of the strongest enjoyable guitar playing my ears have heard. Over the Star Jernigan @ Crazy Alan’s years, diners have come to enjoy outstanding fresh seafood meals and recent scuttlebutt is the possibility that Crazy Alan will be enclosing the entire facility taking the Swamp Shack from a seasonal venue to a place for year ‘round dining. Such an upgrade if it were to happen would not be one undertaken lightly suggesting the obvious - That Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack is the place to go for seafood in the lighthouse district. Down the street we stopped into TBone Tom’s to check out Luther & The Healers. We’ve seen T-Bone’s handle practically any crowd that walks in and for the first time in quite some time, got to see a retirement party, which by many measures, must be the funnest events on this planet. - Continued on Page 37

LOOSE NOTES: Continued From Page 39 Described as a good time R&B/Blues band, Luther and The Healers proved it to me that evening that they are, with their fun choice of songs. According to their website, these guys are the band to make your event an occasion to remember - Be it a crawfish boil, BBQ cookoff, wedding, bar mitzvah, funeral, biker rally and every other event you can think of. Got a party planned and needing a band? Luther and the Healers comes to mind for the shortlist. I’m still trying to figure out how to work Aspens into our schedule - In August, we caught Daze of Nite at this Clear Lake Shores neighborhood bar for a quick set of crisp cover action. To my surprise, I am discovering there is lots of live music happening here. To be continued... BACLIFF BOUNCE - It was time for a return visit to Noah’s Ark and somehow, I managed to get my calendar crossed up so stay tuned for a follow up. Pondering what next to do, we noticed the old Clifton’s By The Sea location up for sale. This place has a nearby State of Texas historical marker letting it be known to all that the area is a long time location for citizens to enjoy the water and live music. If you know of anybody interested and a proper owner for this landmark location, please do everybody a favor and pass them word. Thanks!!! Eventually, James WIllie Wilhite @ Katie’s

we ended up dropping in at Katie’s where it’s practically impossible to show up and there “not” be great live music happening. On the red stage this evening, we took in a long overdue evening of James Willie Wilhite along with Roger Tausz on bass, John Chupin on drums & Terrance Glenn on guitar. James sometimes comes across as a musical enigma, not one to simply play musical genres across the map but to play them with absolute immersion into the musical zone. As Bob Emmons puts it, “James can do it all over the place”... It’s interesting that over the years he’s made room for Glenn on guitar. I recall years ago watching the two share the stage on a Pink Floyd project and was curious how well having two lead players would work? Quite well, actually. Terrance technically nails key lead licks freeing James to take on additional dimension that provides for an evening of full body music. Well played! Heads up: Buddy Whittington will be back in town along with a couple fundraisers which are likely to be no less than humdinger caliber. We’ll see you there! ROCK THE DOCK - I’m a relative newcomer when it comes to seeing the Velcro Pygmies – having caught them a couple times at Jackie’s Brickhouse – and I was curious what they would be like at a Rock The Dock show. First off, it’s still a bit warm out these Velcro Pygmies @ days but the Rock The Dock Velcro Pygmies and their fans (who refer to themselves, affectionately, as “Pyg Heads”) had no trouble handling the heat. I was curious about Max, the new bass player replacing “Forever Rock Star and most popular band member,” Jacob Sanders - No problem with the new guy. Check and double check! I was also curious what kind of crowd this band would draw on a school night – The Courtyard was packed! And finally, after seeing these guys at Jackie’s, I was extremely curious what kind of show the Vecro Pygmies would pull off with an all-aged crowd. Boom! In addition to a good time rock & roll show, frontman Cam Flener put forth a stage presence that clearly connected with everybody of all ages! - Continued on Page 36

HAPPY FIFTH!!! - Congratulations goes out to Debra and the great people at Mainly Drinks! This is a place that always “got it” and in five short years, has earned a spot on the Top 4 “Highest Rated” Greater Houston-area restaurants, according to OpenTable. In August, we joined in on the celebration along with the full house of wine & diners partaking of our favorites, the Smothered Lobster Fries with Shrimp & Crawfish and their Ribeye steak, all of which vanquished in short order. Music that evening was provided by Coldfeet unplugged, something I simply had to check out. Recalling MTV Unplugged shows from the past: Squeeze, Aerosmith, Poison, Led Zeppelin, Queensryche, Kiss, Duran Duran and Nine Inch Nails. All were insanely loud electric bands playing exclusively on acoustic gear Seemed fitting indeed to check out the unplugged version of Coldfeet. ‘Twas fun!!! Time to mark your calendars people - Next year, rumor has it that Coldfeet will be returning to the reunion show circuit, which are always quite the parties and five years

from now will be Mainly Drinks 10th Anniversary. I’m Looking forward to it already! Cheers! South on 146 and west on 646. BACK ON THE BEAT - I finally made it back to Hugh & Jeff’s in August, the official unofficial southwest outpost for The SCENE. Somehow, I fell out of habit when the 646 construction was at it’s worst and was pleasantly surprised how much the place has mellowed over the years - No longer just a hip place to get your car washed but with a big air garage to hang out with friends, an up and running kitchen serving really appealing bar food munchies, a brisk & crisp service staff and perhaps one of the largest stages happening in the area. In August, we caught Nite Wave for the first time and Madigan playing at Hugh’s Big Five Oh bash. WELL-KEPT SECRET - I’m surprised I’ve never heard Nite Wave before. These guys have all the party songs down pat and from what I understand, are one of the area’s hardest-working blue collar bands happening these days. One thing I typically do when checking out a new band, is to

Kenneth Serrato (Lead vocals & guitar) played on the Boss GT-8 while Randy Serrato (lead guitar) played on the Boss GT-6 – a quick clue these guys were about the sound. Danny Serrato was on bass that evening and sitting in for James McComb on drums was Scott Misner whom I’m starting to believe plays for everybody in town.

DUO Winery & Cider Co. Continued from Page 40 Craig was busy working in insurance with Coastal Group & Associates, while the Brazilian-born, multi-talented Raquel (also an accomplished singer and the artist of the DUO labels), was in high demand at the Brazilian Consulate. So just one year ago, this “duo” began planning to make their vision of bringing their family’s tradition of wine and cider from the north to the south. One dream, a great space in Dickinson, and 150 repurposed wooden pallets later, DUO is now open and offering a seven wine and cider tasting menu for $5. There is also the option to take DUO’s wine and cider home to enjoy later, although the atmosphere and comradery among visitors, along with interacting with Craig and Raquel, are all truly part of the experience. Though DUO’s wines and ciders are becoming more readily available at area restaurants such as Dickinson Bar~B~Que, as well as popular pubs like Boondoggle’s, one really must make a trip to DUO to get the full experience and taste what has already been served at a White House Governor’s Ball in recent years to esteemed guests.

“We have so much fun. It feels like a party, and then customers really become our friends before they leave,” Raquel said. Craig agreed. “The sweetest moments here are of people just feeling the energy, telling us thank you for opening and for being here, thank you for taking a chance on Dickinson,” he said. DUO will host some exciting upcoming events as well, such as the launch of their Rodeo Star Cider on September 8, coupled with a personal visit from their winemaker from Michigan. Then on September 24, they will celebrate their official grand opening with live music and food trucks – and plenty of wine and cider, of course! Nite Wave @ Hugh @ Jeff’s Checking out the band’s song list (www.nitewaveband.com), these guys handle popular covers spanning pretty close to half a century. You can tell a band by the kind of crowd they pack at a show and the number of other musicians in the house that evening was most evident. Listeners got a treat getting to hear Daniel Little on a couple songs. I’ve heard Daniel sing at a benefit once at the Cock-eyed Seagull, and I am positive he has the voice that is capable of breaking glass. HAPPY FIVE-O Madigan @ The evening of Hugh & Jeff’s Hugh’s Big Five-O was quite the party. With Madigan on the stage, soundman Dale had the 60’x60’x15’ room sounding like an open concert arena and Eric had the lighting & effects dialed in making for quite the camera friendly show. Madigan has always been known in the area as a ‘70s, ‘80s & ‘90s rock & roll party band, yet over the past few years has woven in the clas-

sic album rock anthems that were typically played late night on the FM dial. I am hard pressed thinking of other bands playing these epic cuts live, qualifying Madigan not only as a rock & roll party rock band, but also a great concert rock Madigan @ Hugh & Jeff’s band, that’s good on the intellect and best served at 110 dB -- which, if you’re still with me, is a rare find these days. LONE STAR RALLY - Is around the corner and so we joined a full house at Jackie’s Brickhouse on a Thursday night for the first semifinal search for Infinity’s Twin @ Jackie’s this year’s Ms. Lone Star Brickhouse Rally. This was a one-of-akind event with Outlaw Dave providing emcee duties that evening and the competition for this coveted title will no doubt be seriously keen. Not many places can pull off hosting such an event but the folks at Jackie’s Brickhouse certain can. Not all bands would be able to handle the frenzy and commotion but Infinity’s Twin sure did. - Continued on Page 32

LIES OF AN ALIBI EXPLODE ONTO THE MUSIC SCENE

Labor Day weekend, be prepared to party all night with a variety of local bands both well-established and new. (Come on, we know many of you aren’t working on Monday!) Hugely successful industrial rock group The Hunger will headline Scout Bar’s Pre-Labor Day Party, along with bands Saturate, Tode, as well as new Houston-based band Lies of an Alibi (LOAA).

vocalist Kitchens said. The mysterious and dark video to the song (“not cheesy, not overdone,” he pointed out) can be found on YouTube, which, as The Hunger’s Thomas Wilson (also owner of Scout Bar) noted, “is now the new MTV,” and vital for the success of many up-and-coming bands.

While many fans are hyped up for an exciting show from Clear Lake’s very own The Hunger, this year’s event will also feature the first show from heavy modern rock band Lies of an Alibi. The group, consisting of members Jacob (vocals), Antho (guitar), Will (drums), Alex (bass) and Jay (guitar/vocals), are coming out swinging onto the Houston music scene, with a lot of interest already—individually, they are well-known musicians from their previous bands, including Soul In Tension, Anamalis, and Pulse Rate Zero. Also adding to the buzz has been the release of several teasers from the song and video online in anticipation of their just-released music video for “Freak Like Me,” which was filmed on location at Scout Bar. After only four days, the video (as of press time) already had almost 4,000 hits.

“It will be a great show locally…It will help us build what we have on a strong foundation,” said Jacob. “Not a lot of people play what we are playing.” Jacob describes their sound as modern heavy rock— difficult to describe, he said, but in a similar vein as bands like Papa Roach and Breaking Benjamin. Wilson is also excited for the group to join the bill this year. “They’re going to pull their weight and then some.” As both The Hunger and Lies of an Alibi rock the Clear Lake stage Sunday, September 4 along with Tode and Saturate, Scout’s Pre-Labor Day Party also promises a little bit of something for everyone: an outdoor stage with acoustic acts, bands both inside and outside, as well as a DJ with dance music and more between bands. Scout’s Pre-Labor Day Party begins this Sunday, September 4 at 8 p.m. It is FREE for 21 and up and $10 for 18 and up. Thomas Wilson along with his wife Aline, established Scout Bar in 2004, and the rest, as they say, is history. “I did it because I wanted to have a place where my band [The Hunger] could play, and I could feel comfortable and proud of. And from there, it kind of evolved into what it is now. It was supposed to be a night club where you got to see really cool bands on the weekends,” Wilson recalled.

“It was the same way when The Hunger started. We were ‘not cool’ because we didn’t live in the Montrose area. We were ridiculed by other bands all the time, then we just exploded right past those other bands,” Wilson recalled. Another interesting aspect that truly sets Scout Bar apart from the rest: Wilson emphasizes that he is always thinking of the venue from a female point of view.

However, Wilson was on the brink of something that performance-wise would elevate Scout to become the respected music venue it is now.

“I always, always try to consider the woman’s perspective,” from the music down to other important things like the bathrooms, where many bars and clubs, Wilson noted, often come up very short.

“I remember all of the other venues around town that did something similar [to Scout], they didn’t have production standards or lighting…The bands were responsible for bringing that in. I was like, wait a minute, let’s raise the bar and get the really good production, the really good lights, let’s hire people that are good at running it, and see if people respond to the level of quality that we want to present. And that’s really what did it for us,” Wilson said.

“We try to deliver those things that women will appreciate so they will come back, because the club business – like anything else – doesn’t work without women. [The point is] to make everyone happy, especially women.”

In coming years, Scout would see the careers of then-unknown bands as Papa Roach and Hinder rise to fame and huge success in the music industry, dispelling the myth that everything cool was “inside the loop” in Houston. “I think that very slowly over the last 12 years we’ve broken down a lot of pre-conceived notions and a lot of walls that used to exist be-

Last month, we checked out the Tai Chi program offered by Michael Glynn, an instructor at the Silent Dragon of Texas for over 17 years with Harris County Precincts 1 & 2. The August session included a full audience partaking of Grand Master John Tsai, a 17th Generation Grand Master of Meihua Qi Gong -- Methods to condense the natural energy of internal Qi and reversing Qi for the purposes of body protection. Hands on instruction demonstrated methods for activating and connecting with our internal Qi knocking out killer stress, improving concentration power, increasing blood circulation and pumping up body energy. We’ve covered this band over the years, from the day’s of Infinity’s Twin @ Jackie’s Vito’s and Pinche’s, and were Brickhouse delighted hearing they were back on the beat. The next big games lining up September 10th at the Pasadena Convention Center and Municipal Fairgrounds where the recently crowned Golden Skate Champs (The Cutthroat Cupcakes) will be challenged by the South Side Roller Derby Elite Squad. This will be a great matchup of strategy and athleticism which should make for an interesting evening.

Members of the band include Ronnie & Ramona Pace (guitar & bass) along with Ian Carro on Drums - All three can sing lead and presents themselves musically well. Checking out Texas TNT photos & videos on their website, it appears that Scout Bar was a special show complete with unique wardrobe for the band and extensive video/photo coverage in the audience. COCK-EYED SEAGULL - We stopped into perhaps the coolest stops on the beat in August and Jeremy Kilgore @ that would be The Cock-eyed Cock-eyed Seagull Seagull where they operate perhaps the best air conditioner on the beat. In August, we took in a follow up show with Tod Marcella and Jeremy Kilgore sharing the stage with what I would describe as an evening of classic covers, heavy on the improv solos and interpretations (jam) - The kind of material that goes along great while sharing intelligent conversation amongst friends. Also in August, we stopped in to check out the Open Mic. Despite the yearlong exodus of young musicians from the Clear Lake area, the scoop is that this weekly gathering of musicians has taken root and is Open Mic @ doing quite well. We came in to Cock-eyed check out a set, ended up staySeagull ing the entire evening and do agree, this is one good open mic! If you’re a musician itching to get out of the house on Thursday evenings, may I suggest the Open Mic at the Cock-eyed Seagull? Heads up: Many of you good

This year, a Calcutta has been added for Thursday, September 15. Headlining for the evening is country music star Mark Chesnutt. Chesnutt has just released his long-awaited 15th studio album, Tradition Lives. Following the Calcutta, the annual fishing tournament will be held on Friday, September 16, in Galveston Bay. Register early to join in the fun, with prizes and lunch provided by Topwater Gill for the anglers, and live entertainment by Kevin and Coleton Black. Kevin has been instrumental in helping bring Rett syndrome to the forefront of national attention for more than a decade. As the father of Cortney, who lost her battle against Rett at the age of 16, he knows exactly what it's like to walk in the shoes of those who deal with this disorder on a daily basis: "Rett syndrome (RTT) is a neurological disorder, found primarily in females. The girls progress normally up until about 12 to 18 months of age when the characteristics of Rett start to reveal themselves. All the social skills and motor skills they have obtained slowly cease to progress; starting a process of regression to what is the equivalent of living the rest of their life as an infant. They lose use of their hands; their ability to speak and most are bound to a wheelchair. The GRITTY GODDESS Returns.... October 8 Women’s Obstacle/Mud Run at Moody Gardens On Saturday, October 8, the Gritty Goddess women’s obstacle run returns to Moody Gardens in Galveston. The event is all about women who want to challenge themselves, and have fun in a beautiful venue worthy of a goddess! The 5K- (3.1-mile-) course through Moody Gardens includes almost 30 themed obstacles, and incorporates mud, water, foam and props. “It’s a one-of-a-kind course,” says The Gritty Crew, “because Moody Gardens is such a unique venue with a variety of terrain.” The course incorporates the grounds of Moody Gardens, the lazy river at Palm Beach, the banks of Offats Bayou, and the surrounding area. It even has “Temptation Island” where participants can take a break from the course, enjoy some sweet snacks, and gaze at the “cabana boys.” The Gritty Goddess is non-competitive, so participants can complete the course at their own pace and enjoy every moment. Women can join the “Sisterhood of the Soil” as an individual, or form a team and do the course with friends, family or co-workers. In fact, funny team names and wacky costumes are encouraged. Waves of 125 participants will start every 10 minutes beginning at 8:30 a.m. The first wave at 8:30 a.m. is the co-ed wave so your significant other can join you! It was a big step for me.” Since the show, a book author in Georgia has commissioned several pieces for a book she is currently writing. Criswell told that old friends often ask what he is up to and he replies that he’s painting. Their responses are typically, “Well, I’ve got a room I need painted.”

Criswell disclosed his friends are amazed, because he was always known as the jock and funny guy. He said, “They can’t believe I have a bit of painting talent and not just a coach.” Maybe Criswell thinks he’s an artist after all. 18th Annual Gulf Coast Film Festival Presents Winning Films and Awards September 23 & 24, 2016

The 18th Annual Gulf Coast Film & Video Festival will take place September 23 and 24 in Bay Area Houston. Film screenings will take place on Friday, September 23 and Saturday afternoon, September 24 at the Hilton in Nassau Bay. The Saturday night Gala and Awards Banquet will be at the Lakewood Yacht Club in Seabrook. The Gala will present the Lifetime Achievement Award to the talented and beautiful Texas actress, June Griffin Garcia. Directors and actors will also be celebrity guests and presenters and will be on hand for photos and autographs. The multilingual Ms. Garcia is a constant working actress with dozens of acting credits and continues to make Texas proud. She was a film reporter for the Mexico City News and award winning salsa dancer as she continued her acting career. Living in San Antonio, she graces television stations Past Gulf Coast Film Festival with her many commercials promoting San Antonio. She has been called by film critics as a chameleon because of many looks and accents, from portraying a Mexican drug cartel boss, to sexy, tough women. Her latest film to be released, which was filmed in the NASA area, is the “Illusion of Cyn”, which also will be shown at the finalist’s screenings at the Nassau Bay Hilton. Featured Artist: Harvey Criswell

STUNNING SILHOUETTES

For Dickinson local Harvey Criswell, September marks his one year anniversary of painting professionally. In that short period of time, Criswell has participated in gallery shows, art walks, and sold over a hundred pieces. He developed an eye-catching style with the addition of silhouettes to his compositions. The former football star isn’t quite yet convinced of his creative talents. He asked himself, “Am I an artist or a painter?” Criswell said he had only taken two art courses while attending Lamar College. “I was in sports and thought they would be easy classes,” he admitted. Criswell, now a retired coach and teacher, started sketching. He confessed the drawings were not very good. He added, “It was something to do. I was just playing around.” But, Criswell continued to dabble. “I can’t play golf when it’s raining,” he joked. Criswell attempted painting with water color and acrylics and then mixed the two with ink. His mixed medium allows for spectacular and unique colored backgrounds which pop with striking silhouettes. While travelling in Hawaii, Criswell took pictures of sunsets with palm trees in the foreground. He said, “The trees came out dark. It looked pretty neat. I didn’t see that every day.”

CCEF to Host DINE OUT TO DONATE • October 3

More than 67 Restaurants to Donate Portion of Proceeds to Foundation The Clear Creek Education Foundation (CCEF) recently announced that it will host its third annual “Dine Out to Donate” event on Monday, October 3 and is excited to have a record number of 67 local restaurants participating. Participating restaurants will donate a portion of their October 3 revenue to CCEF to benefit the students and teachers of Clear Creek Independent School District. “This year, the response to the Clear Creek Education Foundation’s Dine Out to Donate has been tremendous,” said Kaci Hanson, CCEF Executive Director. “The community continues to demonstrate its strong support of the Clear Creek Independent School District, and we thank all of the participating restaurants for their commitment.” CCEF encourages citizens to dine out for a good cause on Monday, Oct. 3. The process is simple – patrons enjoy a meal at a participating restaurant, and restaurant proprietors donate a portion of the proceeds to CCEF to support its many programs, including Teacher Innovative Grants, National Board Teacher Certification, Clear Horizons Early College High School and Technology Education Labs. Patrons are encouraged to bring the printable flier that can be found on the Foundation’s website (clearcreekeducationfoundation.org). CCEF board member and South Shore Grille owner Mickey Wooten developed the concept for “Dine Out to Donate” and has led the effort for CCEF again this year. “As restaurant owners, this is an opportunity for us to give back to the community,” said Wooten. “Clear Creek Independent School District is very important to the area. The feedback on their all-beef hot dogs and corn dogs was so positive, it triggered action. “We received such wonderful compliments on our all-beef hot dogs, that we decided to expand the menu and offer a variety of specialty dogs with flavors from around the globe,” she announced. Launching during Labor Day weekend, Sweet Spot now offers 14 specialty hot dogs: The Sweet Spot Dog, West Virginia Dog, New York Dog, Doyer Dog, Guatemalan Dog, Chile Dog, Tijuana Dog, Columbian Dog, Norway Dog, Peru Dog, Idaho Dog, Memphis Dog, Georgia Dog, and a traditional foot long. “I find it hard to find a good hot dog on this side of town.” Stacy said, “Now folks can come here to satisfy those cravings.” On the topic of cravings, the Sweet Spot takes pride in making all of their 20+ flavors of ice cream and frozen custard, waffle cones, cookie and brownies on premises in addition to inventing a few new desserts and perfecting other popular favorites. “Our deep fried desserts – which you can’t find anywhere else – are to die for,” Stacy insisted. “The perfect dessert is a deep fried (homemade) brownie with chocolate sauce, powdered sugar, and a scoop of (homemade) ice cream! Heaven in a bite!” She said the deep-fried cheesecake and deep fried Honey Bun are also quite popular from their extensive list of deep-fried desserts. Chill out on those warm days with a choice of 50 flavors of shaved ice. Kemah’s Sweet Spot can host birthday parties. On-site party packages can include piñatas or discounted golf cart rentals. For off-site events, Sweet Spot can deliver select items for corporate meetings and functions and private events. “We can set up an ice cream sundae bar and bring flavored popcorn,” she said explaining that they offer 16 flavors of popcorn, which can be preordered in large bags for parties. The dill pickle popcorn, she said, is fan favorite. Kemah’s Sweet Spot is family friendly with a pet-friendly patio. (They will give your pet a bowl of water over shaved ice). For easy accessibility, there is an elevator and free parking. Their prices are family friendly and offer free Wi-Fi to entertain the kids (or keep adults productive). On Tuesdays kids eat free all day. A wrap around deck, which is already a popular destination during fireworks displays, offers great panoramic views of the marina, boardwalk and lighthouse district. The Waitr mobile dining app allows you to browse fully-customizable menus from your favorite local restaurants, and have them delivered directly to your door. It is a very convenient way to eat, and it is now in the Clear Lake Area. As of press time, more than 20 area restaurants including Masa Sushi, Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack, Malay Malay Malaysian Restaurant and Luna’s Mexican Restaurant, among others, have been added to the network with more joining every week. Download the app for free in the App Store and Google Play Store, and see how convenient your meals can be. After downloading the free app, customers are able to choose which restaurant they would like to order from via a list of restaurants provided in order of proximity to your location or from a map. Select a restaurant and peruse the menu. From there, the patron can submit their order, pay and tip through the app. The restaurant is then notified of the order, selects a prep time and a driver will pick up the food and notify the customer when their meal is on the way. KEMAH’S SWEET SPOT Family-owned restaurant features fast casual dining By Betsey Ennis Located in the heart of Kemah’s tourism district is a new and unique fast casual restaurant, Kemah’s Sweet Spot. Perched on stilts high above the main artery to the Boardwalk and waterfront, this family-owned and operated eatery is the brainchild of Stacy Gauna, a long-time Seabrook resident and proud UH alumn.

Editor’s Note: Make sure to ask about their refreshing homemade lemonades. No concentrates or bottled juices served here, just fresh-squeezed lemons and fruit, the old fashioned way. They love to create new flavors, and their watermelon lemonade gets our strongest endorsement!

Stacy is quick to admit the logo and name suggest that they are a sweet shop, but insists, “We are much more than a dessert parlor.” “When we came up with the concept, we wanted something unique that you can't get anywhere else,” she explained. “We wanted to take it a step further.” Their vision was to create an “experience” – and a hangout for locals. Guests can order a quick lunch, dinner or dessert, then chill out in a laidback atmosphere, sit indoors or out on the patio, relax while swaying in a hammock downstairs (on the weekends) or rent a golf cart and tour the streets of Kemah while nibbling goodies.

Stacy and her son Cody come up with new concepts, but they also encourage ideas from employees and customers. “In July, we added a lunch and dinner menu, called the ‘Snack Shack.’” Savory items include burgers, loaded nachos, chicken strips, Texas-sized baked potato, fries and gourmet dogs. She went More Than A Dessert Parlor on to explain, “These are not frozen foods delivered from a big truck. We make as much as we can in-house from scratch, such as corn dog batter, pico de gallo and bacon bits from real bacon fried up on-site and more.
