THE FLOWERETTES
Late last year SceNe music columnist andy eng described the Flowerettes, an all-ladies lineup of Britney Doyal (lead vocals & guitar), Krista Martin (bass & vocals), esther conolly (keys & vocals) and Mona Lawrence (drums & vocals), as “delightful, refreshing, and easy on the ears” and on his “watch list” as a band he’ll “be looking forward to following up with in 2020.” So we decided to get to know these ladies a little better.

How did the Flowerettes first form?
Britney Doyal: “the Flowerettes first formed last year debuting at the Drunken Monkeyz in galveston for Saint Patrick’s Day. at the time we were only a trio. We found our drummer Mona a few months later. i had been performing for some years in the local scene as a solo artist and jamming at every open mic i could get to. i had met Krista, who at the time was working at Nrg stadium as an audio and visual tech. She told me she had gone to school in Florida for sound, and i told her to go buy a bass! She then did, and the two of started jamming right away. couple months later while i was gigging at the Davenport Lounge, here walks in this beautiful blonde girl. i had known her boyfriend, Scott easterwood, as a local musician. But i had never met her. From the moment we met, i asked her ‘Do you play any instruments?’ She said a little piano, then i returned with ‘Wanna join an all-girl band?’ She asked what’s the name? i replied ‘Flowerettes,’ and i remember by her face she dug it. at the end of the evening, i gave her my only crinkled up business card that had been sitting at the bottom on my purse, and since then she’s been part of the band. though, she claimed she wasn't in the band for the first few months, i kept telling her, ‘Yes you are!’”

Mark Your Calendar: Floyds 15th Annual Parking Lot Party featuring the Texas Jamm Band April 18
the 15th annual Parking Lot Party at Floyds Seafood in Webster takes place on Saturday april 18 and entertaining the crowd will be the highly-regarded texas Jamm Band. Formed by members of george Strait’s ace in the hole band which broke the previous attendance record for an indoor concert in North america (set by the rolling Stones in 1981), when they last performed with Strait in front of 104,793 fans for the final show of the cowboy rides away tour on June 7, 2014, at the at&t Stadium in arlington, the texas Jamm Band is a seven-member group of top-shelf performers with a history of filling the dance floors of dance halls, night clubs, and special event venues. Next month they will take the stage for the biggest and best parking lot party the Floyds brand, with soon-to-be six locations scattered throughout Southeast texas, has ever thrown. Mark you calendars and make sure to head out for your fill of “Beer, Band & Bugs.”

BarGe 295 expands its Horizon & Views

New Procedures: Barge 295 has earned a reputation for their gastro pub-inspired menu, including a long list of popular appetizers (chicken wings, Southern eggrolls, Blackened Shrimp, Boudin Balls, etc.) and fresh seafood favorites such as the royal reds (jumbo, deepwater shrimp from alabama’s gulf Shores), the royal red roll, Shrimp Po’ Boys and the fish and shrimp tacos. they have made some culinary changes and upgrades that the staff is really excited about.
“With the new kitchen procedures we’ve put in place, we are looking better than we ever have,” explained Barge 295 general Manager Jeff Schafer. “Food is coming out with better quality and faster ticket times. We have revised the menu with everyone’s favorites with some new items we are sure everyone will love, especially our new daily lunch specials we will have Monday through Friday. We now have crawfish thursday through Sunday and are offering some incredible flavor twists like garlic chili and Viet-cajun. our staff loves crawfish and takes pride in our process and flavor profiles. We won People’s choice at the Big ass crawfish Bash last year and have our sights on repeating as well as winning the restaurant and Bar Division. We are also happy to announce that we will be offering all-you-can-eat crawfish on thursdays for $25.”

Britney Doyal: “the name actually came to me in a dream! i had been searching for a good name, and i woke up thinking...Wow! there it is! FLoWeretteS.”
do you have a favorite song you’ve written and performed?
Britney Doyal: “i have written nearly all the songs for us so far, although i’m always pushing the girls to help with lyrics and such. My favorite tunes that we do are “rambling Woman” because of the fun intro. i like “tied one on” because its a story of hanging in galveston with all our musician friends. My absolute favorite we do as a group is called “Don't You Know” as i sing the lead parts to a grooving almost Motown-sounding, slow song the girls come in with these oooos and ahhs that i just can’t get enough. haha! We are striving to be an original music band, but we like to throw in fun covers from the rolling Stones to r. Kelly for those four-hour gigs. What is next for the Flowerettes?
Britney Doyal: “Upcoming we are performing at Discovery green for the earth day celebration on april 19! this is a big one for us and are looking forward to it soooo much.” Tell us about your favorite performance venues.
esther conolly: “We’ve been blessed to play some super exciting places so far in our short time on stages at house of Blues and White oak in downtown houston. Like Britney said, next big fun stage coming up is Discovery green where with the help of our buddy Jeremy rojas from Sugarhill recording Studio. We are literally going to wheel down a real piano for me to play there! the galveston railroad Museum was super cool! When i found out we were going to play that stage, i was the last to find out. We were in galveston one night and were way down the street when the girls told me. i cried. i was so happy. the acoustics in that building were awesome as were the ghosts... they let me know they were there at the end of the night when my mic stand crazily fell over and broke.”
Krista Martin: “So far my favorite venue we’ve played would have to be the White oak Music hall or the galveston railroad Museum. they’re all fun! also, i am very excited about our Discovery green show coming up in april, it’s going to be different for sure.” What first got you into music and performing?
Krista Martin: “i’ve been playing guitar on and off since i was about 13 or 14. Dabbling into other instruments along the way like keyboards, drums and any other instruments i came across, so my transition into playing the bass has been relatively smooth and lots of fun. But i had never really performed on a stage or in public like we’re doing now. it’s pretty new to me, and i’m loving it! i love playing

esther conolly: “i’ve always been into music and have been playing the piano for most of my life... i am a year away from a degree in Music. i never finished because i was done with all my dental classes and just wanted to get out and work. i didn’t start performing until i met my boyfriend Scott easterwood who is also a performing musician. he had me playing the piano for him at shows early in our relationship. Like Britney said, i was reluctant to say i was in the band at first because i had so many other things going on. But then they grew on me, and now i consider them family, too.” Which living musician are you inspired by?
Mona Lawrence: “i would have to say Beyonce ,Lizzo and Willie Nelson. Because of their work ethic, sense of self and Willie is so chill. haha!”
Which living musician are you inspired by or would you most like to collaborate with?
Mona Lawrence: “the musician i would like to collaborate most is Lenny Kravtitz. he is my spirit animal.”
What is your favorite part about this line of work? Your least favorite? Why?
Mona Lawrence: “My favorite part of being a musician is meeting new people. i've met some amazing talents and fans. it's fun. My least favorite is carrying those damn drums! haha! (roadies are so unappreciated!)”

Sundays are my favorite! the Jam is hosted by great musicians and talent that comes out to play is amazing. the Jam starts around 4:30 p.m., and ends around 8:30. The most rewarding part of your job? the most rewarding part of my job is the support system i have. Katie usually has all the answers and advice and a very good ear. My Katie’s friends and family are the most kind, fun, and amazing people!!

What beer styles or classifications do you feel could possibly be overlooked by local beer enthusiasts? The styles that I would like to see more of would be traditional Belgians and Goses.
Describe a Bucket List setting or event where you hope to enjoy a beer one-day? In Munich Germany during Oktoberfest to drink and enjoy the wide variety of German beers and food. Also it would be badass going to visit as many breweries possible in a one wee.
Describe your favorite setting or event which you have enjoyed a beer? In my opinion the best event to drink as many beer styles as possible under one roof, would be the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, CO. The best way to describe it is like a kid in a candy store.
The last and/or most interesting job you held before becoming a professional brewer. My last interesting job before becoming a brewer was working as a detention officer at the Zapata County Regional Jail, where I worked for 3.5 years.
Words of advice to anyone hoping to turn their passion of brewing and beer into a career. The best advice that I would give would be that you have to have a passion for craft beer and be a very hard worker. It's not easy at all working from the butt crack of dawn ‘til late at night. Oh and also don't start drinking beer until the wort is transferred to the fermenter, because I am pretty sure you will forget to do an important step during the brew day. If you had to start working in one other brewery starting tomorrow which brewery would it be and why? I would have to say Angry James Brewing in Silverthorne, Colorado. I enjoy the city, mountains and the snow, and, of course, the great beers and other legal things, but then I would come back home after one year because I would probably get home sick.

greetings good people! this year’s Super Bowl is behind us and our hometown texans gave it a good run. Valentine’s Day and Mardi gras are also in the rear view mirror and were epic on all fronts. While things were happening all around us, the local live music SceNe was abundant and superb. it was good to see many of you out there. Let’s run down a sample of what went down!

FLiCKBALL ChAMPiONshiP Viii - this is on my list of favorite annual events – the Flickball championships at t-Bone tom’s during Superbowl halftime. Veteran chief referee, Bruce cote, celebrating his 11th year as t-Bone’s Bar Manager with 20 years in the service industry, ran a great regular season and a stellar championship for contestants and fans. the competition this year was fierce as qualifiers from the entire season gathered to compete for the yearend title. congrats to all of the season’s qualifiers. this year’s champion, chuck Bosone, was ice water in-theveins-steady through the evening’s playoff and championship rounds before emerging as victor taking home a hoard of loot. this year had the largest house i’ve ever seen at t-Bone’s for Super Bowl with goodies galore and chamber of commerce-perfect patio weather. People know a good thing…
Speaking of good things, we stopped into tookie’s Seafood for a pre-Valentine’s Day evening and the place was packed! Looking around, the place was filled with whom i would consider locals, totally familiar with the 146 backroad detours. if this isn’t you, break out your smart phone map and get yourself to tookie’s Seafood like a local!

PATiO seAsON - galveston Bay winters are goofy but worth it. i call this time of year Snow Bird Season or Patio Season. on the pleasant days, outdoor live music is simply splendid ways to spend time. We stopped through Jackie’s Brickhouse, t-Bone tom’s, the Yard at Barge 295, and Marais on Dickinson Bayou where folks from kids to grandfolks and everybody in between was taking it in. Many adorned in Mardi gras beads. My time of year…
BACK ON The LAKe - Which would be Brian carrion on a beautiful Saturday afternoon on the Barge 295 upper deck. inside, folks were watching sailing races and college basketball (brackets studies). Upstairs, diners with kids in tow were chowing down on fabulouslooking lunch plates. on the sunny stage was B.c. with a new rig and new gig. a decade ago when i first appeared on the scene, carrion and his band, the crisis, was a leading edge group, producing albums and videos with heart, emotion and intellect. as do many Brian carrion (Bc) @ Barge 295 in their seasons of life, carrion took his game to where the action is in Nashville, with its thriving ecosystem of music industry-minded people. it wasn’t long when he entered the jetstreams, which would take his music action worldwide. often times, we go see musical acts that have toured the world. in this case, one of our locals took the ride out. Fast forward to now, carrion is back in the clear Lake area. Wordly richer and wiser, he totes only a guitar and gear bag (a necessity he learned while touring in asia and europe) with enough gig to occupy the duties of (by my count) 15 musicians. if this guy was in front of an orchestra, he’d be called a Maestro. Notable passages that afternoon had him creating (all on the fly) four-part vocal harmonies, epic drum solos and a wide variety of sonic inventions. i’m thinking todd rundgren or alan Parsons... During his rendition of graceland (trick lyrics in itself), carrion tastefully folds in every sound available his ableton rig can offer, expanding the sonics in directions way beyond what Paul Simon presented. aside from the technical, carrion’s vocals presented modern-day tales, and entertains with healthy heart and sincere emotion.
these days, carrion is not with a band, soloing across the greater houston Metroplex, teaches not only guitar, keyboards, and ableton (better sounds) but also, perhaps more valuable, Promotional Management for musicians. i highly recommend if you’re able to catch his show to be sure and stick around for his jamming set. Better yet if you can and when he’s ready, join him as a band. We chatted about how members of yesterday’s music village are slowly returning to clear Lake, and what it would take to arrange a reunion festival, rekindle the camaraderie, and how getting out these days requires arranging for sitters for many… to be continued...
The LANdiNG - at Marais, is a pirate-style hangout overlooking a picture frame view of the Dickinson Bayou. this place is a jewel with its multiple theme, multi-event setting. on this day, we observed a wedding, Sunday brunchers, wine tasters, a packed deck of crawfish feasters, and Mark Lum serenading all on this peaceful foggy spring-like day. Lum was excellent this afternoon playing endless medleys with his typical stories and wit throughout. on this day, he was sporting a new taylor Mini that sounded exceptionally crisp and bright, ringing through the air nicely. he told me, “the smaller body suits my frame much better than the full size instruments.” My thoughts were that Lum was able to attack the strings on this instrument much like he does when he’s wearing his Stratocaster. an aggressive acoustic style, which i’ve only seen one other musician play on a Mini by Michael taylor of two Fifths. i Sancho like! Lum is “always” reinventing a cover making it uniquely his own. Striking this afternoon was his Smith @ Bruce Springsteen done up reggae-style, Steve Miller’s Joker song and Led zeppelin’s going to califor- Jackie’s nia… Describing his way of blending music is difficult. i simply highly recommend if he’s playing, and Brickhouse you're nearby, hang out and give him an hour or three of your ear time. You’ll be able to have intelligent conversations with your friends or date and where your tip will get you lots of good returns. Better yet would be originals from the man himself. as for Marais, the crawfish were endless as were the buckets of beer. Never fear, Spring is near!!!
JACKie’s BRiCKhOuse - We wrapped up February catching Sancho Smith on the patio deck playing beer songs, galveston county country music, and easy listening covers. the sound was set up on the big arena settings and carried well. Smith is a professional musician, raised down the road in texas city and keeps busy. he also plays with SPX and Listen Like thieves (an iNXS tribute band and a polar opposite of what we heard today). March is a busy month at Jackie’s Brickhouse. this will be a place to be. See you here! - Continued on Page 33

LooSe noteS: cont. From page 34 Vhs 2020 - this was my 2018 New cover Band of the Year while in 2019, i was not able to connect my schedule with their shows. My loss. this changed in February when we converged at t-Bone tom’s Landshark Stage. Man, was it a “party!” if people weren’t dancing their tails off, they were glued to their seats enjoying concert quality dinner theatre live music entertainment.
the band includes front man erik Fannon (who, in my opinion, possesses some of the hottest vocal chops on the beat), along with charlie Lair is amongst the most accurate guitarist happening. the rest of the band: Mike “Bonsko” Mccollough on keys, Jeremy Walton on bass, and todd Fulks on the kit brings special mention. these three are a central trio of band mates providing groove, hammer, pad and accents not only for VhS, but their resumes include that ’70s thing, Sister Mary tarantula, School of rock, the Jet Pac, astronaut Spacesuits and Madigan – a nice reach into local live music, the arts, and exploration.
i spotted Melissa and eric Wolfe from the Madigan family in the audience. it was Party “oN.” Many of you recall the good times when Madigan was instigating local fun. i saw you and was there, too. Since those days, members have gone onto other projects: rat ranch, Diamond Jack, Shotgun road, that ’70s thing, and VhS – such a proliferation indeed. Doodling in my head, a reunion festival with the Madigan extended family would be super cool. League city Music Festival seems pretty well booked. Perhaps a Seabrook Music Festival. even better would be at an inaugural clear Lake Music Festival where the location would be….
The YARd - With every change, Seabrook pirate Fest @ the yard at Barge 295 we hope for the right owner to come along which has been the case at Barge 295, the site of the former turtle club, where they’ve built a doozy splendid music venue, the Yard. Sitting on a view overlooking clear Lake, you can arrive here by land or sea. i’m really pumped about this up-and-coming music venue in the days ahead, and in February, we gave the place a shakedown with the inaugural Seabrook Pirate Fest. this event had a picture perfect setting in so many ways: waterfront location, fabulous soundstage and awesome staging area, a beautifully sunny texas winter day…
there was axe throwing, vendors, ballads, turkey legs, and the entire village you would expect to see at the renaissance Festival, a place where time stands still. i recall christian Weigand shouting out once in october about this event and in February, they all came. as for the music, the opening sound check song provided a big clue. the song was not so much pirate but more grateful Dead

Born in galveston and settled in austin in the ’70s, Van has an amazing career spanning an easy 40 years! he has been voted into the austin chronicle texas Music hall of Fame, as well as winning many awards for the best guitarist in both electric and acoustic and Best Blues-rock band four years in a row!
his career has spanned through europe as well as the U.S. touring with bands that included zz top, heart, Van halen, aerosmith, and many more. he was also featured on one of zz tops albums “Live at Montreux Jazz festival,” and co-wrote with Billy gibbons “Drive by Lover” featured on Vans latest album, “21st century Blues” which was a labor of love, years in the making. Nothing like hanging out at the hacienda with Billy gibbons writing songs! right? When this band is on stage you know you’re in for some quality music and a concert style show. Jordan was mesmerizing on his collection of guitars as he alternated slide and electric with intense energy! this band was tight with adam Johnson on bass, and corey tice on drums, they kept the dance floor full and club packed as their songs flowed one after the other including many originals as well as some great favorites. Jordan Young has shared the stage with some of the great Blues and rock artist, including tinsley ellis, zz top, Samantha fish and many more around the country. his awards include album of the Year and Best rock Band at the 2016 Utah Music awards. he has lead the band since 2009, originating in tennessee. he has released four cDs , all with that southern hard rock. this band “brings it on” with their Southern grit and bluesy rock, and leaves nothing to be desired! JusT MY iMAGiNATiON - it was a misty Wednesday evening in February and to Scout Bar for rhodessia’s Purple reign Party. enter… Smooth instrumental jazz from the ’60s and ’70s playing on the house Muzak. candlelit tables with linen tablecloths and golden flower petals arranged over the mosh pit. i wandered over to the sound and light booth and asked rueben, alex and andy what’s going on tonight? reuben looks me in the eye and says “i’ve No idea….” and with that, we enjoyed a relaxing evening of cool smooth tunes. the good stuff that lowers blood pressure, enjoy intelligent conversation, and spend the evening (like perhaps they do inside the 610 loop). Kudos to thomas Wilson for giving this show a go. totally uncharacteristic of typical Scout Bar music, but good r&B Pop music for the soul, appreciated by my ears, and a music style i’ve heard by many in the area say, they wish we had here. and for the rest of 2020, i’ll be looking forward to the usual famed national and international acts for my tour Stop, clear Lake column, but will now be keeping an eye out for acts i’ve never heard of before at Scout Bar. chances are good i’ll see you there, too…
Bandella @ the Boldthouse
ReuNiON shOW - Which is what i would call it at the Boldthouse with the band Bandella, “a houston based folk-rock and world acoustic group made up of retired astronauts rocking out in celebration of the 1969 apollo 11 moon landing.” Familiar faces from over the decade were in the room including george abbey for this up close and personal show – a reunion of sorts of colleagues and friends from the shuttle era of human space flight. as for the Band Bandella, the group is lead by chris hadfield (acoustic & vocals), “Micki” Michelle racheff Pettit (vocals), cady coleman (flute), Steve robinson (upright bass), and Dan Burband (electric guitar). this was the largest crowd i’ve ever seen at the Boldthouse location over the years with the upstairs listening room completely packed with standing room only. tapers were in the house to capture the event audio, these days using laptops. i asked hadfield and Burbank how this band manages to stay together now that everybody has moved on and their means for keeping the dots connected was interesting. “We were together just recently at an educators conference before this show. We are playing now more than ever where the people live, in california and the east coast.” Musically, Bandella’s easy going folk music style appears better suited keeping things together compared to the other astronaut music group, Max Q. i would love to be proven wrong.
sMAshiNG GOOd TiMe - the season of Mardi gras locally has continued to grow stronger each and every year with participation growing each and every year. this year’s Kemah Parade was over the top for the community and the Yachty gras crowd enjoyed fabulous weather. From a live music sense, the zydeco was sizzling at t-Bone tom’s. Jackie Powell brought along the David Joel Band (Jackie’s Brickhouse & crazy alan Swamp Shack circuit) to the Krewe du Lac royal Ball at the Kemah Boardwalk aquarium, where they proceeded to rock the house with golden triangle live music. open mic specialist Danny taylor rolled a trio in the family float parade and traditional Mardi gras music was provided by Ben Lesaicherre of the local Mustang club making for the perfect event atmosphere. this year’s season was epic!

MeN WhO COOK - this annual event is one of my favorites each year, and i’ve good company. icYMi, according to Seabrook rotary President edna rice, “this is the 26th anniversary of the Men Who cook event. We are very thankful to our residents and businessmen who serve as our celebrity chefs. We are also very grateful to our many volunteers who work behind the scenes who make this event so successful every year.” Money raised from the Men Who cook event supports the many activities of the Seabrook rotary Foundation including educational grants and initiatives, the annual “clothes for Kids” project, post-disaster relief, and other community and international projects. Not only did the event include a wonderful variety of food prepared by Bay area celebrity chefs, this year, the Men Who cook event featured the musical talents of cross road refugees, a super cool rock, Motown & Blues hits from the ’60s, ’70s & ’80s from out of houston. We are looking to make lunch an affordable meal again. and if we become someone’s day drinking spot along with lunch, we are happy to accommodate them as well.”
New expansion: the biggest news at Barge 295 is the development of the land in front of the floating tavern (between the north shore of clear Lake and NaSa road 1) into an outdoor music venue and entertainment area overlooking the lake named ‘the Yard at Barge 295.’
complete with a huge stage, sand volleyball courts, corn hole, fullservice bar and plenty of seating and space to host large events, festivals and live music showcases, the Yard at Barge 295 was broken in early last month with the massive Seabrook Pirate Fest, a go texan Day Live Music concert and has since hosted two weeks of the Battle of the Band Prelims with the finals taking place Friday, March 6. the following day on Saturday, March 7, the Yard will be the setting for the Support Local Music Showcase featuring seven bands and hosted by outlaw Dave, Paul crosby of Saliva and Kris harding of Punkstar radio. other shows and events scheduled to come to the Yard at Barge 295 include the Spazmatics, Nick and the groove, an ambitious 420 Festival featuring multiple musical acts and Midget Wrestling and more.
“the Yard is something we are very excited to roll out,” Schafer said. “With the incredible views of clear Lake in the background and the acoustics it offers, there is no venue like it in this area. We will be having crawfish boils with a new bounce house for the kids and music (weather permitting) every weekend during crawfish season. We plan to host cornhole leagues and tournaments as well sand volleyball. along with competitive cooking contest and themed festivals, we will also feature live music from local favorites to a few national acts.”
Schafer, who joined the Barge 295 management team late last year after successful runs at t-bone tom’s and tookie’s Seafood, is really going out of his way to focus on the customer experience.
“the staff and i are making a push to bring customer service to the next level,” he explained. “We care about every concern and work to make sure everyone’s time with us is as enjoyable as it can be.”

TOuR sTOP CLeAR LAKe - one indicator i use at Scout Bar is to see if roland Belmarez is in the house. he’s really up on the big picture houston live music SceNe. Belmarez is usually a calm and cool collected chap. this evening, he was “extremely” pumped and hyped, “tonight’s going to be a good night! We’ve got aggrolite, Las Skarnales, the Skatastrophics and the heights Funk collective in the house! this will be a different night as this is not the usual Scout Bar music. there are a lot of new faces in the crowd here tonight,” Belmarez was spot on… according to google: “Ska (/skɑː/; Jamaican: [skjæ]) is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s and was the precursor to rocksteady and reggae. it combined elements of caribbean mento and calypso with american jazz and rhythm and blues. Ska is characterized by a walking bass line accented with rhythms on the off beat.”
Kudos to Scout Bar for bringing this show to the clear Lake area! the bands brought in lots of fans, were lots of fun, had good energy and in my mind, good for the soul. there were four bands on the lineup this evening and the sets had to be shorted heavily concentrated with the good stuff. Unfortunately, i arrived late wanting to catch local act, the heights Funk collective open so they’re still on my watch list.
Los Skarnales, of houston, was the Skatastropics a gem of a find and possibly @ Scout Bar houston’s answer to zydeco Festive and gritty. Nestor “el tiburon” & Felipe (vocals) had me thinking Metalachi Blues Brother and able to sing at a sustained 480 BPM. Salvador “chavo” Velazquez & aaron houzvicka (horns) were key making the band’s sound unique. Marcelo Luna’s bass groove was incredibly smooth and funky while Brian “chopper” Shoppell (drummer) was playing the kit as well as the entire Santana percussion line. chris ranew (keyboards) was sizzling slick and Nicco Martinez and Jose rodriguez (guitar) was setting off sparks. these guys instigate the crowd into a fun frenzy and the crowd responds. great show for the local team! aggrolite @ Scout Bar

Lakewood yacht club Honored with national one-Design award
Lakewood Yacht club was recently honored by the United States Sailing association (US Sailing) with the National one-Design award recognizing administrative excellence, fleet growth, creative programming, regatta support, and member contributions. LYc Waterfront Director terry Flynn was at the 2020 Sailing Leadership Forum in San Diego last month to receive the award on behalf of the club.

Lakewood purchased a fleet of 12 rS21 keelboats in 2019 for members to use for various purposes. the UKbased rS21s are designed for versatility that LYc hopes will attract new and younger members by allowing the club to offer numerous sailing activities. Programs being developed include adult Learn to Sail, adult racing clinics, women's sailing clinics, junior keelboat racing, and team and match racing clinics and events. LYc also plans to recruit national and regional events for which the boats will be available for charter.
"a lot of folks have pulled together to make this happen, and the members are excited about the programs being developed," says rS21 Fleet committee chair Marie Wise. "We've hosted several rS21 certification classes with more available in the coming weeks, and many members have already earned their certifications."
Lakewood member and Past commodore ashley Walker expressed in an earlier interview that having these rS21s at the club for members to access for daily or weekend use will allow sailors to experience a new way to enjoy sailing and the related social events without the costs associated with purchasing, storing, insuring and maintaining a boat.

Schmidt is a La Porte product who is finishing her degree at the University of houston and works as a trainer at JetSurf houston in Seabrook.
Weekends on the Water radio show /podcast has launched!! a new weekly radio show and podcast titled “Weekends on the Water” (WoW) hosted by Professional extreme Watersports competitors Jordan Davlin and alyssa Schmidt of JetSurf houston, and SceNe Publisher John ennis officially launched on the first tuesday of 2020 with a remote broadcast from the country’s largest indoor boat and travel show at houston’s Nrg center for episode 1. Belle Lees Boutique is a clothing, jewelry, and gift shop located off the beaten path (355 columbia Memorial Parkway) in League city. in more ways than one, this premiere boutique is not your typical women’s clothing store. First of all, at Belle Lees, they carry stylish and affordable clothing in all sizes from XS to 3XL throughout the store, no need to segregate the larger sizes in a section for women with more curves. Secondly, their storefront is not your typical storefront. it is nestled in an area on the border of Kemah and League city that is more warehouse than shopping center.
“our amazing shop is considered a hidden gem in the area! once we are discovered, we become a new favorite for many of our customers. our goal is to provide excellent customer service on top of our amazing prices, high-quality standards, and style options in all sizes,” said owner Jennifer Pruett.
Pruett never had an intention of opening a boutique. She was an elementary school teacher for eight years, and she worked hard for several multi-level marketing companies on the side. one day she decided to do something on her own. She started small by selling just one brand of jewelry, Kinsley armelle, inviting her friends and family to parties at her house. the parties got bigger and bigger and Pruett branched out into women’s clothing and accessories and started selling online and on Facebook. Within a year, Pruett wanted a space for women to be able to try on the clothes she was so successfully selling; and her husband, although very supportive, wanted the space in their house back. Due to the popularity of the boutique, over the past two years, the storefront has undergone two major expansions as Pruett has increased the inventory by adding more brands of clothing and accessories as well as tchotchkes and unique gift items. the name Belle Lees is homage to her grandmother who has been a huge influence on Pruett, “the word ‘Belle’ means beautiful and Lee is my grandmother’s middle name,” Pruett said. “i’ve always wanted to be just like her when i grow up. My grandmother dresses to the nines, whether she’s going to the grocery store or out on the town or even just at home. Whenever we come over, she has always dressed so stylishly and is still doing so today in her 80s.”
Pruett goes to market in Dallas three times a year and Las Vegas once a year to keep up with the latest trends and to find unique items customers can’t get enough of. items such as the glamorous Wash laundry detergent and PinkyUp teas fly off the shelves. other customer favorites include Peepers reading glasses, bracelets and necklaces made from tagua nuts in ecuador, and the candles from tyler candle company. (“Bless Your heart” is the best selling scent and personal favorite).

introducing eL peScaDo cieGo (tHe BLinD FiSH)
on February 21, el Pescado ciego opened its doors in San Leon. Serving authentic Mexican seafood, the restaurant’s décor certainly suits the overall theme. With colorful papel picado (the traditional Mexican paper garland with decorative cutouts), painted crab traps and fishnets hanging throughout the large dining room and the oversized hammerhead shark hanging above, not to mention the “pirates” protecting their booty in the corner of the room, the Mexican and seafood influences can be felt upon entering the space. there is a large main dining room with three other areas available for private events; one of the rooms has the capacity to accommodate up to 300 guests. the space upstairs has a large stage for live music, an additional bar area, restrooms and a large open space with booths along the sides so guests can listen to bands and dance the night away on Friday and Saturday nights. el Pescado ciego offers daily specials and are open for lunch tuesday through Sunday.
Menu examples: appetizers include traditional Mexican favorites like chips and queso, nachos and shrimp cocktail as well as unique items such as fried octopus, crab cakes and Molcajete el Pescado (fried fish rinds served with guacamole, pico de gallo & salsa). the oyster section of the menu includes raw oysters as well as several unique variations such as the Sanchos oysters (topped with buttery garlic sautéed shrimp and crab in a parmesan cheese sauce) and the oysters a el estilo Bolita (grilled oysters topped with fresh squeezed lime, parmesan cheese and salsa Valentina). the ceviches & cocktails section of the menu includes traditional fish and shrimp ceviches as well as a Shrimp tower (a tower of layered shrimp, fresh tuna, fish, cucumber, tomato and onion smothered in a homemade avocado sauce). their entrees are listed under Mexican Plates and include traditional dishes such as enchiladas, quesadillas and flautas as well as unique items such as the Pescado Sorpresa (steamed tilapia fillet wrapped in banana leaf topped with vegetables) and the huachinango Frito (fried red snapper – with head attached).

What’s your Background/experience: i started off working as a front of house manager at Pappasito’s. i quickly moved into the kitchen manager position after that for about 4 years. then moved onto an italian restaurant in downtown houston, again as a front of house manager for a couple years. then i got a phone call from Jim Molina to take the lead kitchen manager position at red river cantina. Your specialty: Prior to culinary school, i didn’t like seafood. While in school, i was taught the different ways of cooking. Since then, seafood has been my favorite protein to cook with.
signature dish: When i was younger i grew up around an italian restaurant. i was introduced to chicken Parmesan. ever since then, i loved preparing and learning how to pan fry the chicken keeping the inside moist but still crispy on the outside. this is a dish i enjoy to eat and prepare myself.
