I always feel more positive when it looks like winter is behind us and spring is slowly arriving. The dark mornings and nights make me feel sluggish and gloomy, whilst the lighter evenings make me feel encouraged to tackle some of those long-awaited household tasks. Whether I do them or not is another question, but at least I feel more encouraged!

The Easter school holidays are looming in the not-toodistant future so now could be a good time to plan some places to go to for getting Out & About in the fresh air.

I have featured Quarry Bank Mill, Styal, Cheshire – it will involve paying, but most definitely worth a day trip out; and Wycoller Country Park, Colne. Also featured in this issue are various groups and initiatives that we think might be of interest to you.

As always, please remember that without the support of advertisers this magazine could never be distributed free of charge, so whilst browsing please take note of their input, too.

Finally from me: a heart-felt ‘Thank you’ to you, the readers and contributors of The Scallywag. I just can’t believe that this is our fortieth issue! Play, Learn and Grow…with Julie!

Julie’s Childcare is based in Rawtenstall, Rossendale in a secure, safe family home.

Our highly successful programme of junior Karate sessions makes the art accessible to children from the ages of 4-7.

Our “Tiger Cubs” training sessions have been specifically developed for the very young, who may find the atmosphere of the main club classes a touch too intimidating.

Our instructors have developed training specifically for young children which improves and develops fitness, co-ordination and concentration, in a safe and controlled environment which encourages respect, self- discipline and self – confidence.

Classes are challenging and fun, with the basics of Karate being taught by experienced instructors, interspersed with plenty of exciting fun and games, specifically designed to help those physical skills which will support the training in Karate – balance, speed, strength and agility.

Our instructors are all experienced karateka in their own right and all are DRB checked and certificated.

The programme is based on a progression system which will lead children to the day they can join the main club and start working towards their black belt! Within the programme achievements are measured through a merit badge system, with badges regularly awarded as the basics of karate are mastered. easter festival fun The annual Bacup Easter Festival takes place on Easter Saturday the 26th March. To celebrate the Britannia Coconut Dancers doing their Boundary to Boundary dance the town will be alive with attractions.

Bacup market will host a local products and gifts market together with retro vintage stalls, so alongside the regular retail stalls there will be a range of local traders selling goods from handcrafted hand bags and fudge to home accessories.

There will also be free face painting and balloon modelling from Trinity Baptist Church and a wildlife table and children’s activities from Lancashire Wildlife Trust A classic car display will be appearing on Irwell Terrace with an exciting range of cars and Limitless Cheerleaders will be performing.

Bacup Royal Court Theatre will be holding an Easter Extravaganza with egg painting, bunny hunt, Easter bonnet competition, theatre tours and much more.

So come along to Bacup town centre on Easter Saturday to enjoy Bacup town centre at its best.

Event takes place 10am to 3pm. Britannia Coconut Dancers will be performing on Irwell Terrace at approximately 12.15pm and Bacup Market 2.15pm.

eciding where to go for a full day-trip out is becoming increasingly difficult. As a family of five we try to pick a destination that caters for all interests, all walking abilities and all levels of concentration. Sometimes trying to please all parties can be a tricky task.

Now the children are older, we opted for a revisit to Quarry Bank Mill and Styal Estate, a National Trust property and working museum.

Quarry Bank Mill set in Cheshire, not far from Manchester Airport, is one of the best-preserved textile mills of the Industrial Revolution.

Founded by Samuel Greg in 1784 the factory was created for the spinning of cotton and, by the time of Samuel Greg’s retirement in 1832, was the largest such business in the UK. The company was notable, if not notorious for its use of unpaid child apprentices who

lived in a separate building near the factory known as the Apprentice House.

Both the Mill and House are open to the public for exploring. The mill is set in a picturesque country estate you can wander around at your leisure. As an added highlight the Mill is powered

by Europe’s most powerful working waterwheel – most definitely a ‘don’t miss’.

We arrived early on a clear, crisp winter’s day to begin our tour. I should mention at this point that

We began by visiting the Cotton Mill, where ‘traditional’ museum displays detailing the social and industrial history of the property are sited alongside working machines. It’s not just a question of being told how noisy spinning mules are; but actually experiencing it!

(Please note; those who are sensitive to loud noises!). The Mill is huge, with 12 galleries in all, each covering a different aspect of the mills working life. You may wish to linger longer in some than others, and some are more interactive than others, but we found most of them very interesting. More importantly for the children, the exhibits are not all behind glass cases, with people speaking in hushed tones- it’s all very hands on and mostly loud. In fact, on the day of our visit there were National Trust representatives on hand to show the children the principles of how a waterwheel worked, helping them create their own, with a pencil, a paperclip, string, a circular piece of card – and of course water! Engineers were on hand to discuss the finer points of running the machines, as well as costumed experts demonstrating spinning, weaving and dying. It was a clever mix of adult and child-friendly learning!

visiting the Apprentice house- a fantastic experience. Children’s tours are held throughout the day, although there is limited availability and they are very popular, so early arrival is advised. However, they are very well presented by the National Trust staff. It really brought the Victorian childhood period alive for our youngsters, being told off by a teacher and allowed to touch real leeches was one of the many experiences.

Quarry Bank Mill has a licensed restaurant that sells meals, snacks and drinks. Other facilities include toilets, wheelchairs for visitors to borrow, baby-changing rooms and cycle racks.

In fine weather a taking picnic would be a lovely option; there are quite a few picnic tables and you’ll be able to sit and admire the splendid grounds whilst having your lunch. There is also a nearby play area.

This is a worthwhile day-trip, although not a cheap one if you are paying admission prices. A family ticket will cost around £40.00; there are various prices per adult and child depending on what you want to see and do; and whether or not you want to pay the voluntary Gift Aid donation. Plus there’s a £5.00 parking charge.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day out, well worth a visit even on a cold and wet day and we’ll be back again!

2015-2016 Diamond Jubilee Year Celebration for Staghills!

Where children lead the learning and the celebrations!

t was on 2nd May 1955 that Staghills Nursery School, funded by Lancashire County Council, opened its doors to invite the first 15 youngsters aged between two and five years old to begin their learning journey. In total 80 children were nursery schooled that year, in two classes supervised by Headteacher Miss Muriel Taylor, assisted by three Teachers and three Nursery Assistants.

To give you a sense of what was happening at the time, in 1955 Winston Churchill and Anthony Eden were Prime Ministers, the film The Dam Busters was released, Andy Pandy was the most popular children’s show on TV and Bill Hailey and the Comets had topped the charts with Rock around the Clock! How things have changed!

From those humble beginnings of two classrooms, Staghills has grown and developed with and within the surrounding community. Linda Connelly, current Headteacher believes the success of the nursery school has been a well-balanced and on-going transition between being at the fore-front of new developments and curriculum initiatives, whilst holding at the centre of their work the care and well-being of the 220 children who attend there.

Another important piece to the success story of Staghills is the commitment of staff, some of whom have been with the school for 30 years or more. Without their drive and positive enthusiasm over the years to face the many challenges asked of them from the government and local authority, Linda believes that they would not be thriving and flourishing as they are now.

The School has proudly participated in national projects and research groups; they have consistently represented the interest of young children on local and national committees and bodies.

They have been active lobbyists for the nursery and early year’s sector; they have become a Teaching School, a Forest School and have many, many more accreditations to their name.

Changes have included extensive alterations to the building and becoming a Children’s Centre in 2006, providing not just quality day-care but working closely with the local community and offering extended facilities, such as baby massage, a midwife service, a local support group for parents of children with special needs, toddler groups, computer and first aid training courses.

Staghills Nursery School has always prioritised the safe-guarding of children and supported so many young children with special and additional educational needs. Over the past 60 years Linda believes this deep-rooted philosophy of inclusion has led to their success with working with children and families, particularly those in the greatest need.

She is extremely proud of their history and achievements so far, Staghills has uniformly and regularly received high recognition and praise in Ofsted Inspections; they are currently rated as being ‘Outstanding’ for the fourth consecutive time.

Linda realises that looking back over the past 60 years the “Children and their families have always been at the heart of all that we do and that what Staghills is about, that the staff who have come

and gone over the years have all been committed to ensuring that our children have had the best possible start in life”.

Who knows what the future holds for Staghills Nursery School, as this brilliant and valuable resource is a state-maintained nursery? In 2017-18 the Government is introducing a new National Funding formula for Early Years and there are concerns as to the extent of its application.

So where are we now early on in 2016? David Cameron is Prime Minister, Justin Bieber has so far had the most single chart sales and The Clangers is the top TV show for pre-schoolers!

To celebrate this milestone birthday year, Staghills Nursery School are planning various events throughout the spring and summer, including a vintage tea party and family fun days, with lots of entertainment, stalls and games to enjoy.

The 350 acre Park is steeped in history; the small hamlet of Wycoller was an agricultural settlement back in the early 18th century, when the manufacture of woollens on handlooms became an important industry. Perhaps more famously Wycoller is associated with the Bronte sisters who referred to many of the landmarks set within the Park, such as Wycoller Beck, Bank House and Wycoller Hall.

The Country Park and Wycoller itself can be approached from two different car parks (as traffic is excluded from the hamlet). At both sites there is a £1.00 daily parking charge; both are within walking distance from the hamlet centre. Although the Trawden Road site is closer and is easier on the legs, it just depends on how much exercise you want and how old your legs are! Plus: the path in from Trawden Road is pram and push-chair friendly.

We chose to park at the Trawden Road site and it was a beautiful stroll to Wycoller, with wonderful views of the countryside and nearby Pendle Hill; the enjoyment is enhanced, as

the footpaths are away from traffic and you can just let the children ‘go’.

The hamlet has many well-preserved, attractive buildings; it is so pretty in that ‘chocolate box’ way. Again, without the noise and worry of traffic, it just felt so special, tranquil and well…….old!

The ruins of Wycoller Hall (believed to be the model for Charlotte Bronte’s Ferndean Hall in Jane Eyre) still stand and the children loved exploring this place, it’s a fascinating ruin. Then there are the seven ancient bridges that the cross the nearby Wycoller Beck, are requiring practical investigation: some dating back to Roman times.

On warmer days I’m sure the children would enjoy paddling here.

Close by in the converted Aisle Barn, there is a visitor and information centre, as well as toilet facilities. The centre is open every day except Monday, from 10.00am and during holiday times childfriendly activities are planned (at least for the time being). Let’s also not forget to mention the duck pond. (Duck food can be purchased from the centre).

There are picnic benches and seats

dotted all around, although beware of ducks; they seem to enjoy pecking legs of nearby picnickers in order to ‘persuade’ people to share their lunch.

This could be a bit frightening for younger ones!

There are lots of well sign-posted footpaths to follow, of varying lengths and difficulty, many of which can be downloaded from the internet. We chose the one that took us uphill to visit the ‘Atom’ Panopticon: it is a great viewpoint here (it’s also where the other car park is situated); on the sunny day we went the country views were fantastic.

This was a charming place to visit and experience, a definite ‘tick’ in the ‘stretch our legs’ box and a place we would like to visit again. I can confirm that a fun time was had in the fresh air!

Although with the children growing up as fast as they are doing, I think my legs were stretched more than theirs! *(Lancashire County Council recently announced that, due to the UK Government cut in their funding, they were ceasing the Countryside Service from 2018 and cuts are to start this April).

Still HAPPI at Haslingden Baths

n our Autumn issue we ran an article about the amazing community work Selina McConnell and her merry band of volunteers are doing to refurbish and re-open Haslingden Swimming Baths. We approached Selina for a progress update and to see if we could help further. This is the news from HAPPI… In order to take the project forward, last September Haslingden Baths volunteers set up a Community Interest Company; Haslingden Baths CIC. A CIC (Community Interest Company) is a new type of entity designed for people who want to set up a business to benefit the community, rather than the owners, directors or employees; so it’s a social enterprise. To clarify further, Haslingden Baths CIC is a not-for-profit organisation, meaning that any assets or surpluses made from the business will be used principally to benefit the surrounding community.

Selina is eager to reassure people that HAPPI is still in existence, and is striving hard to raise funds to provide practical help and support to assist with the renovation project.

In order to raise these much-needed funds; the HAPPI team have devised a new and exciting method to do this and so far have raised around £3000 with their ‘Sponsor a Tile’ scheme! In a nutshell, everyone in the Haslingden

and Rossendale area is being welcomed to sponsor a ceramic pool tile. There is no fixed price on donation, but £5 minimum per tile sponsorship will go a long way to help the cause. Selina revealed, “When the pool opens, there will be a diagram on the wall listing each person who donated; and where their tile is in the pool area”. If you would like your name written on a tile for the life of the building and receive an official certificate to commemorate your sponsorship, then please get in touch.

The team are looking forward to the day when Haslingden Baths CIC will be creating both full and part-time jobs and even more volunteering posts in their office and planned Community Café; this will be to support the swimming pool. When that time comes, Haslingden Baths CIC will advertise these posts to give as many people as possible the opportunity to join the fabulous project. The message from the HAPPI team is very clear, “We would

focus on: Exam time is looming coping with stress

T

hese days’ tests and exams are an everyday part of school life for both children and parents.

It’s a challenging time for all, especially with the new demanding curriculum that is currently being taught at primary and secondary schools. We thought we would look at the ways to ease and cope with this type of stress – that could benefit the whole family.

Watch out for exam stress

Children, who experience stress may be irritable, not sleep well, lose interest in food, worry a lot, and appear depressed or negative. Headaches and stomach pains can also be stress-related.

Having someone to talk to about their work can help; support from you as a parent, tutor or study buddy can help children share their worries and keep things in perspective. The advice is - If you feel your child isn’t coping, talk to their teachers at school.

Make sure your child eats well

A balanced diet is vital for your child’s health, and can help them to feel well during exam periods.

Some parents find that too many high-fat, high-sugar and high-caffeine foods and drinks (such as cola, sweets, chocolate, burgers and chips) make their children hyperactive, irritable and moody. That comes with personal knowledge of your child.

Help your child get enough sleep

Good sleep will improve thinking and concentration. Most children attending primary school will benefit from between 9 and a half to 11 hours’ sleep a night, teenagers at least 8 to 10. Allow half an hour or so for children to wind down between studying, watching TV or using a computer and going to bed to help them get a good night’s sleep.

Be flexible during exams

It’s not easy living in a household around exam time; so the advice is, where reasonable, parents are flexible.

If your child is revising all day, don’t worry about household jobs that are left undone or untidy bedrooms. You staying calm can help. Remember, exams don’t last forever.

Help them to study

Help your child revise by making sure they have somewhere comfortable to study. Help them draw up a revision schedule or ask the school for one.

Talk about exam nerves

Remind your child that feeling anxious is normal. Nervousness is a natural reaction to exams.

The key is to put these nerves to positive use. Being reminded of what they do know and the time they have put into study can help them feel confident.

Encourage exercise during exams

Make sure your children are active.

Exercise can help boost energy levels, clear the mind and relieve stress.

Walking, cycling, swimming, football and dancing are all effective.

Don’t add to the pressure

The support group ChildLine says that many of the children who contact them feel that the greatest pressure at exam time comes from their family.

“Keep things in perspective,” says Rosanne Pearce, a senior supervisor.

“Listen to them, give support and avoid criticism.”

Before they go in for a test or exam, be reassuring and positive. Make sure they know that failing isn’t the end of the world, and that if things don’t go well they may be able to take the exam again.

After each exam, encourage your child to talk it through with you. Then move on and focus on the next test, rather than dwelling on things that can’t be changed.

And finally a very important point…

Make time for treats

When the exams are over, help your child celebrate by organising an end-of-exams treat.

Don’t use rewards as bribes. Instead, encourage your child to work for their own satisfaction, offering small, frequent treats.

Building a bright future

Rossendale Sixth Form has been encouraging students to ‘Design, Engineer, Construct!’.

A successful pilot scheme, ‘Design, Engineer, Construct!’, helps students to build skills in the specific areas, architecture, engineering and construction.

Working with Bardsley’s Construction Ltd in Dukinfield, Alder Grange gives students the chance to gain valuable work experience, particularly in senior management roles.

Students design and develop buildings from the starting sketches to the finishing brickwork. They even get the opportunity to use industry software to create sustainable buildings like ‘eco classrooms’.

Making this course available is the schools’ response to the national skills shortage in industries such as engineering and construction. Analysis by the Royal Academy of Engineering earlier last year suggested Britain will need more than a million new engineers and technicians by 2020.

Jo Griffiths, Head of School, said:

“We wanted to offer this course as it went further than the Architecture enrichment course we were already running. After we heard the training body, Construction Skills, estimate the industry needs 35,000 new apprentices just to survive, it hit home that there was an impending skills gap in these industries.

We added it to the timetable as it allows our students to gain valuable experience, important relationships and essential practical skills as building blocks for their potential career paths,” Historically, young people have little opportunity to gain this depth of work experience and so there is little

understanding of these professions. We have already seen the positive impact of the course as current students have gained places on much sought after Architecture courses.”

Abubakar Ahmed, Year 13 ag6 student, said: “Being able to work with businesses in these specific areas has taught me skills and given me experiences that I wouldn’t have if I had simply worked in the classroom. These skills have encouraged me to apply for university courses in architecture, so they really have become building blocks for my future career!”

The ‘Design, Engineer, Construct!’ course is unique, and important given the upcoming need for these skills that, as a student, I am constantly reminded of by older generations and teachers. All of this, plus my goal of becoming an architect, makes me value the skills I’m gaining, that much more.”

175g butter 1 tbsp golden syrup 150g sugar 250g porridge oats

Grease and line a shallow baking tin.

Place the butter, golden syrup and sugar in a saucepan and heat gently, stirring often, until the butter has just melted.

Remove from the heat and pour in the porridge oats. Mix until combined.

Turn the mixture into the prepared tin, spread evenly and press down well with the back of a spoon.

Bake at 180 C / Gas 4 for 20 minutes. This will produce soft and chewy flapjacks. Bake for a few minutes longer if you prefer crispy well-cooked flapjacks.

Allow to cool; then turn out and cut into pieces.

This is a very quick and easy recipe where children will enjoy the stirring, spreading and pressing down of the mixture. If you like you can add 50g of desiccated coconut and / or 75g of chopped glace cherries. Alternatively dip a corner of the finished flapjack pieces into melted chocolate.
