Welcome

Welcome To

The Winter ‘19 edition of The Scallywag magazine for Rossendale

H

appy New Year!

Yes! I can still say that as we have one or two mince pies left over from the festive holidays. Hoping your new year is going well and your resolutions are still intact. Welcome to the winter issue of the magazine, the first of 2019. In this issue’s Out & About we have included a Mersey Ferry Explorer Cruise : a great way to visit Spaceport, the U-Boat story and take a ride across the Mersey on a ferry called Dazzle. (There’s a song in there somewhere…) We feature an article about Jo Jingles, taking their popular music and movement sessions into a Valley care home and the

wonderful, heart-warming experience it is for all concerned. The feedback from residents and Jinglers alike has been so positive. Also included is a feature from Rossendale Chess Club, a lovely friendly group that gladly welcome new members, both juniors and adults. They are even willing to go into local schools to help coach chess clubs. Again, it’s a brilliant way to encourage interaction between the generations. Once again, we say many thanks to friends, readers, contributors and advertisers alike for your support and loyalty.

Tracey A huge ‘Thank You’ to Whitewell Bottom Pre School for holding the competition to create the front cover of our Winter issue. Thank you for all your hard work.

All-weather Fun

D

on’t waste time waiting for the weather to be perfect. There are so many opportunities to have fun in and around Rossendale, come rain or shine.

Grab a warm hat, some toasty socks and a family member or two. Take some time out together, brave a new challenge or learn a new skill…and remember: you’ll never meet a rusty person! Here’s a few ideas. 1. Tell a story Finding a way to keep things interesting is the best way to get children excited about being outdoors. Research an interesting story about a location and tell the story while you’re out and about. 2. Get creative with nature Create a ‘big’ artwork. Write messages and draw pictures in the sand. Or collect sticks, leaves and pine cones and create a masterpiece in your local park! 3. Build a nature home There are loads of ideas on the RSPB website (https://www. rspb.org.uk/get-involved/activities/give-nature-a-home-in-yourgarden/) for how you can help to build a nature home in your back garden. From insects and frogs to hedgehogs and birds, children will love building a home for these small animals. They can also keep an eye on the place for signs of animals moving in!

T

4. Take a Walk on the Wild(life) Side Children have a natural intrigue when it comes to animals and wildlife. Grab a pad and pen and head out on a nature walk and see how many different species they can find. You could even find out more about each animal when you get home. We hope you find these ideas helpful! Christopher Saint Director of Projects, Academy of FUN!

Out with the old!

here is no better time to beat those January blues than by having a good clear out of your wardrobe. And it could be your most

One peek into your wardrobe will no doubt reveal something you haven’t worn in a while. Why leave it there when it could be worth some money? You may just want to clear out your own home. It doesn’t matter how small or large the amount you bring along to recycle at Cash for Clothes. Vanessa adds; “We recycle everything we buy. So when you sell your clothes to us you are helping to reduce landfill and aiding people in less fortunate situations access affordable clothing.” Cash for Clothes is also a great way of fundraising for your school, nursery, sports club, church or any charitable event just by bringing your unwanted clothing to the shop. Environmentally friendly and financially rewarding – Cash for Clothes will help kick-start your mood, your finances and recycle all in one simple service.

lucrative one yet. If your wardrobe is bulging with clothes you don’t wear anymore, items that don’t fit, or are just out of season or fashion, Cash for Clothes can help. Company owner, Vanessa, explains; “We offer a simple and professional service, guaranteed to put cash in your pockets. We don’t complicate things; you bring in unwanted clothes, shoes and handbags in good, clean condition. We then check and weigh them and we give you a printed receipt with your cash. Or if you are busy, you can leave your bags and come back later to collect your payment. It’s as easy as that!”

T

Family

here is an abundance of research now available supporting the claim that providing activities involving different age groups has significant health benefits for all involved. Growing older doesn’t necessarily mean having to lose an interest in activities enjoyed as a child and hearing music can often stimulate very strong and meaningful memories. For many young children, exposure and familiarity with the older generation may, for a variety of reasons, be infrequent or non-existent. The same applies to the older generation who may not have regular contact with grandchildren or families.

SongTime with Jo Jingles

At Jo Jingles they care about the community and the spirit of the community. So much so that they have taken their already successful music and movement sessions into two elderly care homes – including maracas, the parachute, the bag of sleeping bunnies and obviously ‘Little Jo’! And it’s been an enormous, pleasurable success for all concerned. Proving that music can provide positive mental stimulation for both young and older generations, but enjoying the experience together in a simple format of just ‘making music’ means that heaps of fun are had as well. Jo Corbett, session leader and Manager of Jo Jingles Rossendale enthused, “The older generation who raised us with love and passed on their wisdom, enabled us to do the same with our children, the younger generation. So, when we can bring them both together, we get very excited. I am lucky enough to experience this ‘meeting’ every week and it is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. Three generations coming together and sharing their love of music and movement.” Jo was unsure of what the response was going to be when she first approached care homes with her idea. Would they be interested in introducing their residents to sharing her music and movement sessions with pre-schoolers? Two care homes, one

in the Valley, immediately jumped at the opportunity once she approached them and it’s fair to say, no-one has looked back. The sessions have been judged to be amazing and the impact on so many levels is clearly evident by all those present. As Jo goes onto to say, “First, we have the residents themselves – they love seeing something different, and they can join in with the children and have a good laugh with them. Myself and Gwen, my lovely teacher, can see residents coming out of their shells and becoming re-energised as each week goes by. Also the staff – they enjoy it too! As the weeks have gone by residents’ relations: sisters, brothers, daughters, and partners, are coming in, visiting when we are there to see for themselves what is happening. One daughter told us that the difference to her dad was amazing. He had become very reclusive after having had a stroke, but now he has made good friends with a couple of the children and he looks forward to their visit, taking an active part in the sessions. Then there are our super ‘Jingling’ children and their parents. They come for so many different reasons, many are current Jo Jingles customers who just love to bring joy into the care homes. What’s wonderful is that we also have parents who are now visiting their relations in the home every week, and bringing with them their children, so

that they all ‘Jingle’ together. Whatever the reason – it is making an immense difference!” One parent is quoted as saying, “It’s so heart-warming to watch the children and residents interact with each other.” Louise Testa, Registered Manager at Cherry Tree Care Home, comments, “Jo Jingles has enhanced our home immeasurably; the joy of bringing the old and young together has created an overwhelming sense of excitement and purpose for our residents. You may reach an age where playfulness and childlike freedom is forgotten, but it only takes a spark to re- ignite that flame of childhood laughter. Jo Jingles has brought that to Cherry Tree in abundance and long may it continue.” Perfect. The good news is you can be a part of it as well. Jo Jingles sessions are currently running in two care homes: • every Monday afternoon at 1.45pm they visit Cherry Tree Care Home in Rawtenstall • alternate Wednesday afternoons at 2.15pm at Carders Court Care Home in Castleton. These are Pay as You Go sessions at £2.50 per child, however there are only 10 places, so booking is essential.

“My Activity Passport”

P

A way to inspire schoolchildren and boost resilience

rimary school children will be challenged to go on a nature trail, visit a local landmark or make a treasure map through a new “passport” of activities launched by the Department of Education later this month. It is hoped this will encourage more family time and help build children’s character and resilience. Endorsed by organisations including the Scouts, Girl Guiding and the National Trust, as well as children’s charity Action for

Children, the list of activities is intended to support parents and schools in introducing children to a wide variety of experiences and fulfilling activities like flying a kite, learning something new about the local area or putting on a performance. The activities are designed to be accessible so that every child and family can get involved and include milestones for each primary school year group. Tasks that schools and families can set children include: • painting a self portrait • posting a letter

• • • • • •

looking at the stars on a clear night playing a board game writing and performing a poem going hiking planning and cooking a meal interviewing someone Among the list of activities will be opportunities for children to engage in social action that helps them make positive changes for themselves and others. Schools will also be able to adapt the list to meet the needs of its pupils and local communities. More info at www.gov.uk

Out & About

Mersey Ferry Explorer Cruise

Mersey Ferry Explorer Cruise fter years of taking three children ‘out & about’, one of the secrets of a successful day out is keeping the children constantly moving and then they are hopefully interested (or at least distracted), by what and where you are visiting. Taking a trip on a Mersey Ferry Explorer Cruise is an excellent example of keeping them constantly moving and interested. And with half-term soon to be upon us, if you choose a fair-weather day, this could be one of those successful days out!

Liverpool’s Mersey Ferries operate various Explorer Cruises all year round and they are reasonably priced. I chose this particular cruise as it runs between three terminal locations on both sides of the river and the price includes free entrance to two riverside attractions : Spaceport and the U-boat Story. The total journey time is fifty minutes and you can hop off and on the ferry at any terminal throughout the day and they run frequently. So you have flexibility. I ordered the tickets on-line (which were discounted) and chose to join the ferry at Liverpool’s famous Pier Head. In hindsight, for better ease of parking, I maybe should have joined the ferry at another terminal. It depends on the time you have available. Once aboard the ferry there is lots to see on both sides. Viewing Liverpool’s waterfront and the river ride itself were really enjoyable. We were lucky enough to be sailing on the stunning Dazzle ferry, created by Sir Peter Blake as part of the 2018 First World War commemorations; the eye-catching dazzle design is in honour of the patterns that were first used on vessels in WW1. They worked by ‘baffling the eye’ and making the ships difficult to target. Our first stop at Seacombe Terminal was to Spaceport, a great place to get interactive with fascinating information about the solar system and beyond. The 360 degree space dome and observatory were really interesting. The Space Ride and Space Dome show are a must for a visitor of any age – I had as much fun as the children! The sizeable Star Wars exhibition was an added bonus especially as we have young SW fans in our family. We stayed at Spaceport for at least a couple of hours. From Seacombe we hopped back on the

boat and took the short ride to Woodside Terminal, where we visited the U-boat Story. We were able to learn about and see an actual German U-boat that had been sunk off the coat of Denmark and then found many years later, before being homed in Birkenhead. This provided a wonderful insight into the role of the Uboat during WW2. Undercover, there are lots of interesting historical information and artefacts to read about (including an enigma machine). Once outside, you see the salvaged U-boat which has been dissected into four sections. You can look into the various compartments of the boat through glass panels which allow you to see its structure and loads of detail. It was amazing to think that this vessel housed fifty four men plus their equipment; it must have been a very claustrophobic atmosphere. We spent about an hour or so here before getting re-boarding the Dazzle and heading back over to Pier Head. There are lots of cafes close by to stop for lunch or snacks and refreshments are also available on the ferry. Personally, I found this was a perfect place to enjoy our picnic! I picked a dry day for this trip out as it would not have been be so enjoyable had it been rainy and windy. Plus it can be cold on the river ride, whatever time of the year you go. So please remember to take extra layers for warmth as the ride is best enjoyed sitting outside on the deck. This was a great day out which we enjoyed as we were either kept moving (at quite a pace) or distracted by a lot of things (I mean interested). And yes, you do get to hear THAT sixties song by Gerry and the Pacemakers again, and again and again. But please do not let that put you off. By Tracey Sunderland

o you play chess? Would you like to join a chess club and meet other chess players? Chess players of all abilities join our club. Some are experts who play for Lancashire and take part in competitions all over the country. Mainly we play for fun.

Play the best board game in the world with Rossendale Chess Club

We are affiliated to the Lancashire Chess Association (LCA) which encourages and promotes chess for a wide range of abilities, from beginners in primary schools right up to major contests for the very best players in England. Lancashire is one of the strongest chess playing counties in the country and are currently English county champions. This great success has come from the encouragement and development of junior talent in and around the county. Indeed, two Valley schools already benefit from support and resources provided by the LCA. So why teach our children to play chess? As teachers and parents battle with the distractions of electronic games and social media among younger generations, the supporters of chess education argue that it is a great way for children to learn about fair competition, mental discipline, planning and perseverance. In the world of chess two famous names, Tigran Petrosyan and Levon Aronian, have more in common than only

the game ; they are both Armenians. This is a country where all six year old children learn chess in schools thus becoming the first country to do so. Armenia introduced mandatory chess education for students in 2011 and children are taught chess two hours a week for two years. Now whilst that is not the case in this country, here at Rossendale Chess Club we are enthusiastic about helping teachers organise chess within their schools. In fact some of our members are actively coaching in two local primaries. Any school that feels its pupils or chess club would benefit from our assistance or coaching should contact the Club secretary, Peter Barlass. Schools running or organising chess clubs could benefit from the free loan of tournament quality equipment. Our aim is to foster school chess in Rossendale, and who knows, one of today’s youngsters could be a future Lancashire county or British champion. For example, young Joe Birks from Burnley, is British Under 8 champion and represented England at the World Cadets Championship in Georgia in 2016.

And for you? Chess can help improve mental wellbeing. As the brain works like a muscle, it needs regular exercises for being healthy. Playing chess reduces the risk of having Alzheimer’s disease, anxiety, and depression. So why not come and join our friendly club who meet in the function room at the Riverside Inn, near the centre of Rawtenstall, on Wednesday evenings. Any young player familiar with the rules will be welcome at the club. Indeed chess playing mums and dads, uncles and aunts, granddads and grandmas would also be equally welcome. Becoming a member or a junior member of a proper chess club is the very best way to develop your talent, but most importantly it’s the very best way of enjoying the best board game in the world. Interested in knowing more about Rossendale Chess Club or how we can help you in the running of your school chess club, then contact Peter Barlass, Club Secretary on 0781 706 8427 or at barlassofredwood@msn.com.
