Yet another year has flown past, autumn is upon us, winter and (dare I mention) Christmas are just around the corner! So quickly moving on; welcome to this autumn issue.

In this Out & About section we have a feature on The Crocky Trail at Chester and one about the Roman Museum at Ribchester. Both were completely different days out, but still very enjoyable and worthwhile.

Back by popular demand is our feature about primary school admissions in Lancashire, aimed at parents of threeto-four year olds, focussing on applying for a place on-line using the Lancashire County Council website. This article explains about the online procedure, but, more importantly, gives the key dates for submission of forms - don’t miss the deadline! It is supported by adverts from some of our local schools in Rossendale, please take note of their input; without their contribution The Scallywag magazine could not be distributed free of charge.

Karate Kicking for 20 years!

t’s been twenty years since Sensei Neil Holroyd established the popular Valley Shorai Karate Club based at Ewood Bridge. Over that time he has successfully trained both children and adults alike under the authority of the Shorai Martial Arts International Association.

Sensei Neil’s hard work, dedication and persistence has paid off and the Club’s dojo now accommodates sixty-five licensed and registered members who are proud to train at and compete on behalf of Valley Shorai in many national and international competitions.

With a number of different lesson options catering for a broad range of age and ability, Valley Shorai has a loyal following of members, ranging from boys and girls as young as 4, up to men and women training in their 50’s. Their skill ability

is also wide ranging from Novice level up to National Championship medallists and World Championship competitors. Sensei Neil himself has competed in two World Karate and Kickboxing Championships.

Sensei Neil’s ethos of creating a fun, safe and inclusive training environment where members can make friends, learn self-defence and valuable life skills has ensured that the club continues to grow.

Membership has increased year on year with many

students going on to earn their black belts. One such member is Claire Rhodes who has been an instructor at the club since earning her Dan grade five years ago.

Just this year two of the club’s longest serving members earned their very own black belts : Samuel and Max, now aged 16 and 15, joined the club aged just 4 and 5 respectively. They both achieved their black belt Dan grade through many years of focused training and expert teaching.

The young black belts now take an active role as junior instructors.

Sensei Neil commented, “The twenty years of continued success of Valley Shorai is not down to me, but is testament and credit to all the hard work, enthusiasm and sheer determination of every single member of the Club.

It’s been such a pleasure to train, teach and just watch them all grow; most of them are now taller than me!”

That was now ten years ago, and Mini Me Time has gone from strength to strength. The classes that Mini Me Time provides is an open door into your baby’s world as you learn his or her cues and likes and dislikes. Charlotte relocated to Rossendale and launched her first classes in Summer 2016, working closely with Staghills Childrens Centre prior to its closure.

Charlotte is very excited to be expanding rapidly in the area, so much so that she has recently recruited a new instructor to work with her in the Rossendale area to ensure she is meeting demand for classes from local families. Vicki Mann will be joining the Mini Me Time team and is very much looking forward to this new opportunity and the chance to be working with parents and babies in Rossendale. Charlotte believes that the success of Mini Me is because ”Each class is carefully developed and child led, so we are able to focus on the needs and enjoyment of the children and parents that attend.”

news Disneyland Dream Come True

L

ocal dance school, The McCaw School of Dance and its pupils have had a busy summer! After going through a rigorous audition process, the pupils of the school were offered the opportunity to perform at Disneyland Paris!

Principle of the School, Charlotte said, “It was a truly magical experience, one that the children, parents and myself will never forget! Watching the children perform in the parade down Main Street in front of thousands of people was the proudest moment of my teaching career so far.“ The trip was such a huge success Charlotte is already thinking of future trips to give her pupils further opportunities to showcase their talents.

The McCaw School of Dance first opened its doors in Haslingden back in 1984 and has been providing high quality dance training for the last thirty three years. This latest success story is one in a long line of many, with past pupils gaining places to train at schools such as the Royal Ballet School, The Hammond School, Chester and Arts Educational School to name a few! The School has celebrated success in Ballet, Tap and Modern exams with a 100% pass rate and students gaining grades of Distinction and Merit in all subjects.

Charlotte is a fully qualified Royal Academy of Dance Ballet Teacher as well as a fully qualified Tap and Modern Teacher with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance.

When asked how she felt about the achievements of the school over the last thirty three years Charlotte said, “I am extremely proud of how far the school and its pupils have progressed but what I am most proud of is the ethos of the school. We are a fully inclusive school, we accept pupils of all abilities, everyone is valued and their successes celebrated, but most of all, we are a family, something in the dance world that is hard to find!”

The Crocky Trail

I The Crocky Trail is an activity or adventure park and playground divided into two halves. There is the actual Trail, which is a mile and a half long adventure route that encourages you to scramble and swing through trees, climb over crooked or narrow bridges; and clamber through and tackle various obstacles. The other half is a park area with adventure rides, some of which are not for the faint-hearted; an opportunity to test the children’s nerve, as well as your own.

Located in Cheshire, it’s a place to go when you have the complete day free and the weather is dry. It’s open all year round, weekdays during the school holidays and weekends throughout term time. They only close when the weather is particularly bad, so check their website for details. Be warned, some of the rides close when it rains as they become too slippery. This is a very popular school holiday destination, so pick the day you go carefully and aim to arrive early.

We were there for at least four hours, longer if the children had had their way.

Booking and payment can be done online, so as soon you arrive, get your receipt checked and wristband attached, the fun can begin. It’s not the cheapest day out, (£14.00 per child, £9.00 per adult) but this is a one off charge. Apart from food and drink, there are no extra costs involved.

We visited the park rides and slides first as it was early and not many visitors had arrived. So there was little or no queuing and the children (and you) can go on them again and again and again.

The rides themselves look like they have been built in someone’s garage, but don’t let this put you off. The Park is nothing like a fairground, there is no piped music and no fibreglass characters.

However, there is dirt, mud and a certain amount of risk involved.

After a couple of hours of the children enjoying the Park, we started our trek around the Trail itself. This route winds through fields and over a stream, broken at intervals by swings, mazes, bridges and walkways to cross. The Trail has been devised with varying degrees of participation in mind, that is to say, if you don’t want to do a challenge like walk across a stream using a 5cm wide iron beam with two slack chains to hang on to; you don’t have to. There is a path aside of each task that avoids these obstacles. To complete the circular Trail and tackle the various challenges, took

us about an hour and a half. However, there were lots of places to stop on the way and sit and relax; you go at your own speed. There were also lots of quirky picnic spots dotted all the way round.

Luckily, the large (free) carpark is close by, so you can easily nip back for picnics (only snacks and drinks are served during off-peak times) and a change of clothing (which I didn’t take)!

Please do not wear your best clothes, you will get dirty. Footwear with a good grip is necessary, like walking boots or trainers. Wearing fashion footwear is not advisable, whereas taking a large pack of wet wipes is (I forgot these too).

Although The Crocky Trail is promoted as being fun for the whole family, some of the rides are clearly not suitable for young children, however, there a variety of attractions that they can enjoy. This is reflected in their pricing policy where under 5’s go free.

This is a full-on fun day out, so be prepared to get dirty and laugh a lot. In reality, you have to be sensible and do your own risk assessments regarding the rides and challenges. However, it’s a fantastic place to let children be children and burn off some energy. We will visit again in the spring, this time with the essential change of clothes, a big pack of wet wipes and a couple of plasters.

was recommended to try this place out as somewhere completely different, where entertainment and fun is aimed at children in a truly back-to-basics sort of way. So still being outdoors, still getting fresh air and exercise but with added excitement and layers of mud. And where you can join in too! A true whole family experience.

Ribchester Roman Museum and Baths

W

hen you have an hour or two free, it’s relatively dry outside and you need a ‘something for everyone’ afternoon, then a visit to Ribchester Village and the Roman Museum is a good way to spend the time.

The Roman site and fort at Ribchester (Bremetennacum Veteranorum) was believed to be established in the early 70s AD and was built as part of a network of defensive forts across northern Britannia. The area accommodated a garrison of cavalry troops whose purpose it was to patrol the surrounding area and keep the local inhabitants under control. Later in the second century the settlement gained a high level of importance and so the civilian site outside the fort became extensive and where many craftsmen worked and plied their trade. A bath house and at least two temples were also built outside. The fort is believed to have been occupied well into the fourth century.

It was only about one hundred years ago that the area became a recognised site of special historical interest, as a means to stem the flow of Roman artefacts leaving the village. So in 1915 the Ribchester Museum of Roman Antiquities was opened, directly on the site of the fort. Since then many developments have been taken place and it is now a registered charity : The Friends of Ribchester Roman Museum Trust.

Now an afternoon learning about Roman history may not be to everyone’s liking. However a trip out to Ribchester village incorporating a circular walk that takes in the remains of Roman baths, a riverside amble to feed the ducks, a small museum, a picturesque church and churchyard and a visit to a children’s park could be a winner. (Not to mention a couple of lovely pubs and ice cream shop).

The village has a large pay and display carpark, which is reasonably priced and is beside a large playing field and children’s play area; behind that is St Wilfred’s Church and the Museum, so it’s not a long walk and good for little legs that tire easily. We went to see remains of the Roman bath house and granary first, where there are a few information boards helping us to understand what the layout was like. This is free. From there we walked alongside the river to the Museum ; the park we left to last (my decision).

The Museum is only small and is all on one level, with a charge of £3.00 per adult and £1.50 for children over 5.

Under 5’s and OAP’s are free. It’s well laid out and easy to follow. For what is, essentially, a small village museum there is a lot of information here and some interesting artefacts on display, such as a cavalry tombstone, lots of coins and pieces of pottery, many of which were found during the excavation of St Wilfred’s graveyard, which is adjacent to the Museum. The most striking item is a fine copy of the famous Ribchester Helmet which is currently

on display at the British Museum. There are also opportunities to handle items and dress up. My children especially enjoyed an interactive 3D model, which allowed them to virtually explore the reconstructed fort, bath house and neighbouring settlement by means of an Xbox app. The staff were very approachable and knowledgeable and the man who spoke to the children about Roman history had them all inspired, especially my youngest when talking about the 3D model Xbox app!

After that we meandered back through St Wilfred’s churchyard to the park and play area, obviously! There is a small gift shop on site and there are public toilets next to the car park.

This was not the most action packed of afternoons, but a fascinating place to visit and everyone enjoyed it. Result!

Choosing a primary school for your child

ell, the first and most obvious place to start (assuming you have decided not to home-educate your child) is to get a list of schools you may consider.

In Rossendale this can be obtained from the County Council website at www.lancashire.gov.uk or from the Area Education Office based in Accrington telephone 01706 220711 or 01706 220614.

You can then begin to shorten your list by reading the school brochures (contact the school and ask if they have one available) or, if you are able, researching them on-line. You can also speak to other parents, check recent Ofsted reports (www.ofsted.gov.uk), or look at the national schools league table, though it is advised that reports and tables are read with care!

From here you can move onto the finer details of choosing the right school for your child, it really is never too soon to start!

Does your child need special attention? Are they particularly bright or have particular behaviour patterns? Will the school offer support for Special Needs?

Does your child have specific areas of interest or are they particularly keen on sport? Does your chosen school have the equipment or structure to support these interests, such as bands, choirs, sports teams, computer suites or out-of-school activities?

Do you require wrap-around care?

Does your chosen school provide breakfast clubs or after-school care? How much do they cost?

How big is the school? How big are the classes and what age range is taught in each class?

Does the school suit your family’s religious beliefs? How do they handle religious education?

How would your child get to school? Is there a safe walking route or are school buses available?

Does the school have an active PTA? Would you like to be involved in this side of school life?

Does your child have a preference? Would they be happier if they stayed with their friends?

Open Days and Visiting Most primary schools have open days or will be happy to arrange for you to visit.

Go prepared with an idea of what you are looking for. Some suggestions are: • A happy school with high morale • A warm and welcoming atmosphere • Cheerful and friendly children (and staff) • High quality and varied work, displayed with pride

Relaxed staff Enthusiastic children who ask, as well as answer questions An air of concentration and hard work, but don’t expect silence Any other resources you or your child consider important, such as a good library, computer suite, sports facilities, arts and science equipment.

schools Applying for a primary school place in Rossendale

T

he age your child will start school depends when their birthday is. Children can start school from the September after their fourth birthday. However, by law children don’t have to start school until the beginning of the term after their fifth birthday. If your child was born between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014 they will usually start primary school in September 2018.

Each year around this time we try to outline the important information to help guide you along the way. Although the closing date for the process is Monday 15th January 2018, it’s a good idea to start thinking about it now.

Lancashire has an on-line admission application system. Full versions of the prospectus and application form are viewable and downloadable via both the on-line application system and the County Council website.

First things first:

You will need to enter three different schools : your first, second and third school preferences. Think carefully about your preferences, if you need advice, contact our local Area Education Office situated in Accrington on 01254 220711 or 01254 220614.

Before you apply, research the schools in your local area.

It is always best to include a school near to where you live as one of your preferred options. Demand for school places in some parts of Rossendale is high and this could help towards you being offered a local school. Your nearest school for admission purposes is measured by a straight line.

Find out more details about the admission criteria and process in the Information for Parents 2018 to 2019 on-line document. You also need to read the admissions policy booklet relevant to our area.

Fill in the application form:

If you registered online in previous years (before 1 September 2017) you will need to re-register as Lancashire County Council is using a new system.

To complete the form you will need the following information: • A valid email address - this is the address they will use to confirm your application and the school place you will be offered in April 2018.

• Your name, address and telephone number.

• The forename, surname and date of birth of the child.

• The child’s permanent address (if different from the parent/guardian applying).

• The names of your first, second and third school preferences.

• Details of brothers or sisters who will be attending one or more of the schools you are applying to when the younger child starts in September.

• If the child receives care, you need the name of the Local Care Authority that is respon-sible for this care and the child’s social worker.

• You will need to choose your own user ID, this must be must be 6-16 characters long and contain letters and numbers only • You will also need to choose a password of at least 8 characters, one uppercase, one lowercase, one of the following special characters: ! @ # % ^ & * () and one number.

Please be aware you need to apply for a place at a primary school, even if it’s linked to your child’s nursery, or your child’s brother or sister is already at the school.

When you have completed your form fully it will show as complete. You can log back in to your application form to check the information you’ve already given and to add more if you need to. If you do change it, just make sure you re-submit. You can change your completed online application at any point before the closing date on Monday 15 January 2018.

If any of your preferences are for a voluntary aided (church) school, a foundation school, an academy or a free school they may require you to complete a Supplementary Information Form (SIF). Please contact the school directly to find out about the admission criteria.

When you’ll find out

If you apply online, you will be informed of your official offer of a primary school place by email on 16 April 2018. You will also be able to check yourself online from this date too.

Enterprising Rossendale schools ready for Hospice challenge

ive Rossendale schools face a challenge of their entrepreneurial skills in a contest to raise money for a local charity.

The Youth Enterprise Challenge will see teams from Alder Grange, All Saints, Fearns, Haslingden High and Whitworth High come up with enterprising initiatives, with all the proceeds going to Rossendale Hospice.

The Year 10 school teams will link up with a mentor from a

local business, who have each kick-started their project with a £50 donation. The ultimate aim for each team will be to use the investment to generate as much income as they can to benefit local people but there are other prizes for presentation skills, innovation and community involvement.

The businesses that will mentor the schools are solicitors Mulderrigs (All Saints), accountants Cassons (Haslingden High), estate agents Farrow and Farrow (Alder Grange), Rossendale Leisure Trust (Fearns) and marketing agency D and M Creative (Whitworth High School).

The challenge is organised jointly by Rossendale Hospice, the Hospice’s Corporate Ambassadors Group and Alder Grange School where the launch event was held, with school groups and mentors meeting for the first time.

Clare Richards, Head of Fundraising at Rossendale Hospice said: “We rely heavily on funds raised by the public to operate our services and since the Challenge started two years ago, it has raised more than £14,000 for the Hospice.

“The Youth Enterprise Challenge also represents a fantastic opportunity for the young people taking part. They’ll work together in a team to organise their enterprising ideas, gain practical advice from their mentors and learn new skills including; budgeting, time management, report writing, public speaking, all relevant to their future careers.

“We’re grateful to all the businesses who are taking time out to support the teams and the event.”

Cassons’ Managing Partner Les Nutter, who heads up the Hospice’s Corporate Ambassadors Group, said: “Each year the students come up with some great fundraising ideas and it will be great to see how this new group of students rise to the challenge. I’m confident this year’s contest will be a great success too.”

The challenge will climax with a ‘Celebration Event’ in February at Alder Grange when each school will present their efforts to the judges: Mayor of Rossendale, Councillor Colin Crawforth, Stephen Greenhalgh, Managing Director of JJO, Anita Kenyon MD of Arthouse and Irene Chambers, Fundraising Trustee of Rossendale Hospice, and the six winners will be revealed along with the grand total raised.

This app is designed to help you quit smoking over 28 days. It provides daily tips, advice and support, and you’ll be rewarded for meeting goals. If you stay smoke free for the 28-day programme you’re up to five times more likely to quit for good. This app is available free to download from the NHS website.

With up to four million downloads to date, the NHS weight loss plan is trying to help thousands of people with their weight loss goals. The 12-week plan combines calorie counting and exercise to help you lose weight safely and sustainably. The NHS plan is delivered through, what they say is, ‘12 fun and motivating weight loss packs’, these include a colourful food and activity log sheet. You can also get free advice and support from the Health Unlocked online Weight Loss community.

It is claimed that regularly drinking more than 14 units a week risks harming your health. Alcohol apps or unit calculators will help you check how much alcohol you’re drinking and the number of calories you’re putting away too. A free app is available to download from NHS.uk called ‘One You Drinks Tracker’. Or useful unit calculators are available from alcoholconcern.org. uk/unit-calculator or drinkaware.co.uk.

Many of us eat and drink too much sugar without realising it. The Change4Life Sugar Smart app lets you scan the bar code and food and drink labels to see how much total sugar they contain. That way you can make healthier choices when shopping for food and cut your sugar intake. It’s free to download from Googleplay or ITunes

Wearable fitness gadgets

Wearable fitness devices are designed to automatically track, for example, your physical activity, sleep patterns, mood, and calorie intake.

These gadgets, which come in the form of wristbands, watches and earphones, can be a good option if you need a nudge and want information about your wellbeing – but they do come at a cost.

Many other online tools and apps are free, easy to use and can be accessed on a smartphone, such as an Android or iPhone, or a desktop computer.

Improve your fitness

The NHS Couch to 5K plan is designed to get you off the sofa and running 5km in just nine weeks. This gradual running plan is a free and easy way of getting fitter and healthier and has helped tens of thousands of people so far. The plan is delivered through a series of podcasts that can be downloaded to any mobile device, and is supported by the Health Unlocked.

Healthy eating

The One You Easy Meals recipes app claims to be a great way of enabling everybody to eat tastier and healthier meals. It can be used to search for easy calorie-counted recipes for breakfast, lunch, evening meals and puddings.

Also, it allows you to keep track with a handy shopping list that will help organise the ingredients you need by supermarket aisle. This app will try to help the user learn about being more ‘food smart’ and thus assist in making healthier diet choices. Free to download from NHS.uk
