Allied – Kyiv Biennial 2021 Amidst the turbulence of the COVID-19 pandemic, a grave recoil of the war on terror, and growing pressure from the neo-feudal corporatism of modern communication technologies, the current global as well as regional geopolitical alliances have been undergoing a great reshuffle. Former power consensuses and international agreements have fallen apart, right-wing populism and waging war have become common substitutes for national politics, and the fortification of borders and the criminalization of migration, underpinned by pandemic restrictions, now appear at the very center of the political mainstream. The utter failure of humanitarian militarism marks the twilight of the neoliberal era, and a new worldwide model is gradually taking shape with a general shift towards authoritarian capitalism. How can new international alliances be formed and exercised today under the circumstances of the strengthening of the repressive apparatuses of the nation-state and the rise of isolationism and autocratic types of governance across the globe?

A l l i e d – Ky i v B i e n n i a l 2 0 2 1, curated by the East Europe Biennial Alliance, aims to explore various historical forms and contemporary examples of cultural and political alliances in Eastern Europe and beyond and their ability to create new social formats. The biennial hosts a series of art projects and public program events focusing in particular on the current conditions, political factors, and institutional actors that foster new alliances in the twenty-first century. As we are confronted with the most pressing questions of our time by the ongoing war conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, Kyiv Biennial 2021 brings together the curatorial approaches of partner institutions from Prague, Warsaw, Budapest, and Riga, establishing a model of an inter-institutional alliance for multilateral activity in the region as a sustainable network for collaboration and a space for support that is sorely missing in the field of politics today.

The conceptual foundations of A l l i e d – Ky i v B i e n n i a l 2 0 2 1 relate to the phenomena of (de)colonialism, authoritarianism, and the politics of memory in the conditions of postsocialist capitalism in Europe’s East. The biennial questions the notion of (semi-)periphery and its traditional geopolitical and cultural divisions with metropoles from the perspective of the transnational history of Eastern Europe. This year’s edition also seeks to map the authoritarian landscape of the region, tracing its political genealogy, shaped by the extensive extractivism of natural resources, new data colonialism, and surveillance capitalism. The analysis of current authoritarian tendencies is interconnected with the study of an ideologically motivated memory politics, which determines the historical image of Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall, as well as with the latest revolutionary transformations and military conflicts that have redefined the post-Soviet space thirty years after the collapse of the USSR. A l l i e d – Ky i v B i e n n i a l 2 0 2 1 is the fourth edition of an international forum for art, knowledge, and politics that integrates exhibitions and discussion platforms organized by the Visual Culture Research Center. Jointly curated by the East Europe Biennial Alliance, this year’s biennial presents a thematic continuation and conceptual development of an inter-institutional collaboration among its members, Biennale Matter of Art Prague, Biennale Warszawa, Kyiv Biennial, OFFBiennale Budapest, and Survival Kit Festival Riga, structurally involving the network of perennial events in its organization.

East Europe Biennial Alliance was established in 2019 in order to propose new forms of international solidarity, expanding socio-political imagination and alternative cultural solutions.

Through connecting aesthetics and politics, the Alliance constructs a different narrative of the Eastern European region and redefines the way cultural institutions collaborate.

The Insubmersibility of Toasters and Kobzars Theory: Or They Tried to Sink Us but We Float Out of Sight at the Bottom Performance by Quinsy and Jörgen Gario

For the Kyiv Biennial 2021 the brothers Quinsy and Jörgen Gario will share a tale of resistance. Through music and poetry they will speak of survival despite all the odds. A moment where ‘post’ becomes a message of solidarity beyond being a conceptual fixture. Thinking through slave revolts, labor strikes and independence struggles in the Caribbean a link is made with Ukraine and post-socialism. The work speaks in the tradition of Calypso, Soca, Reggae, Tambu and steelpan music that presents political standpoints through oblique references and sly humor. Born through constant surveillance and the need to speak in coded languages, even inventing new ones, the performance will remain as an audio piece at the biennial exhibition. Through the work, the brothers extend a hand in solidarity.

Divided/Shared Solidarity: Political Mobilization and Visual Agency in Belarusian Protest Movement 2020–2021 Lecture by Almira Ousmanova

In 2020, Belarusians have awakened to political life, and two key words returned from political oblivion, namely revolution and solidarity. In their revolt against the authoritarian regime, Belarusian people have made a huge step forward from interpassivity to a common cause, from negative collectivity to a sense of genuine community, from social atomization to new practices of solidarity and collective action in the name of a common goal – freedom and democracy. The Belarusian revolution has not yet ended, the crisis has not been overcome, the repressions against ordinary people and civil society continue, and the authoritarian regime still persists in holding on to power with unprecedented physical and symbolic violence, but the experience of solidarity manifested and continuing in various forms has already created conditions for a different political future.

In her talk, Almira Ousmanova will consider two interrelated issues: firstly, how the theoretical analysis of the very concept of “solidarity” and its political history in the 20th century helps us understand the grounds, peculiarities and forms of solidarity among Belarusians in 2020; and secondly, what role the manifestations of solidarity in visually mediated forms in the public sphere played in mass involvement of Belarusians in the protest movement. The second issue is particularly important, because it includes not only the analysis of why visual images may become catalysts for social change, but also to see how abstract concepts of solidarity, sense of community and multitude become visualized and communicated. And last but not least, there is also a question of why political cleavages always engender distinct forms of aesthetical resistance.

Artistic Utopias and Activist Aesthetics After ’89 Lecture by Julia Ramírez-Blanco

After 1989, Western Europe experienced a new explosion of grassroots social movements. Throughout the 1990s, various groups with different worldviews experimented with possible forms of alliances that did not imply unification or the erasure of difference. Converging in enormous transnational protests, they conceived of their demonstrations as a peculiar form of spectacle.

Their idea of militant variety was expressed through the exhibition of a multiplicity of aesthetics, each corresponding to a different collective. This notion of encounter would eventually converge on the metaphor of the carnival.

Understanding this as a foundational moment in Western activism, this presentation explores the aesthetic forms of what was called the anti-globalization movement, inquiring into the political role played by its performative and symbolic forms. It also reads this plethora of creative processes through the lens of utopia. In its most common sense, utopia usually represents a kind of respite in the face of the upheavals and risks of political struggle, the invention of a society in which confrontation is not necessary. However, in these social movements, the dream world is inserted into the struggle itself and becomes a weapon in the conflict. We can thus speak of “utopias of revolt.”

To Whom It May Concern

Film program presented by Oleksiy Kuchansky “To whom it may concern” – a formula, which describes collective assemblies of humans, technologies and organic life as invented by new post-cinematic moving image genres that emerge in the digital era of highly-developed information technologies, immaterial labour and climate crisis. The formula was originally developed by Nobert Wiener and later rearticulated by the media and film theorist Ute Holl. To-whom-it-may-concern-ness is a radical alternative to the previous historical forms of moving images, which are widely known as “cinema”. Despite them, To-Whom-It-May-Concern films and videos explore and invent the ways of making artworks beyond limitations and borders of classical aesthetic – between the ethics of film production and that of image, object and its representation, human and other species, technologies and organics, just as between author and spectator. Concerned ones are humans, machines, organic and non-organic creatures, who take part in production of a film as well as its screening and further causal distribution. In the focus of critical ecologically oriented approaches this new status of concern may become a reason to dream of non-unifying communality based on situational solidarities, diversity, flexible individuations, shimmering autonomies, hospitality and care. After all, to put it simply, everything is concerned with everything; however each thing is concerned in its own unique way.

Charting the development of computer animation through video games, Farocki explores a new operational realm of digital moving image to uncover the unseen labor invisibly rendered into these on-screen digital worlds.

Making of Earths 2021

The Making of Earths explores the longue durée of the modern trope that the future is manageable. Following a year-long documentary-led research, the film traces current efforts made across China and Southeast Asia to predict the future of Earth’s increasingly strange climates in the shadow of ever more control on land.

A chasm widens between the lived experience of overwhelming uncertainty on the ground and the mass of data collected to profit off this instability. The film picks up on these themes and subverts the idea of knowing, instead opening up spaces of disorientation within the paranoid structure of totality.

Armed and Happy is preoccupied with common emotional accents in virtual practices – from unpacking goods, sports and political events to weapons training – in an attempt to notice the patterns of behavior that become part of everyday life, although were unacceptable before.

It is an episode of Armed and Dangerous, a project bringing together a group of Ukrainian artists who work at the intersection of contemporary art and experimental cinema to explore the militarization of society and, in particular, the attitude of Ukrainian youth to violence and weapons.

The project is curated by Mykola Ridnyi.

F-Word refers to the current protests in Belarus, political struggle and state violence through the discourse of fascism.

The topic of fascism and victory over it has for a long time been central to the contemporary state ideology of Belarus.

Since the start of the uprising after the 2020 presidential elections, both the state and the protestors have been accusing each other of fascism. In turn, these positions have been criticized by the academic community for historical untruths. The video traces this symbolic Anna Engelhardt struggle and the political, social, affective symbolic effects it produces. K-object from LL Group aims to explore the possibilities of an alternative view on a superterrestrial object, revealing the limitations of our perception of nature.

K-object is a working title of the Knyahynya meteorite that fell near the same named village in Zakarpattia in June 1866. It was included in the collection of the Natural History Museum in Vienna, came to the attention of Jules Verne and Charles Darwin, made an impact on the panspermia hypothesis, and later was recognized as the biggest meteorite in Europe.

The film essay Mined Soil revisits the work of the Guinean agronomist Amílcar Cabral, who studied soil erosion in the Alentejo region of Portugal through the lens of his political engagement as a leader of the African Liberation Movement of the 1950s.

This line of thought intertwines with documentation of an experimental gold mining site, now operated by a Canadian company located in the same Portuguese region once studied by Cabral. In Mined Soil, the voiceover dialogue explores the space, surface, and textures of the images presented, proposing past and present definitions of soil as a repository of memory, exploitation, crisis, and treasure.

While an encrusted EU tastes more and more stale, a new Europe emerges from its periphery. In these outer spaces, the global wind of change is moving fast. New orders are emerging quickly, in Albania, Syria, Turkey, Ukraine, or Melilla. All these places are not only establishing new European alliances but also questioning the narratives of the European heartland. The Conference on the Future of Europe is the EU’s first broad participatory endeavour

engaging directly with European citizens. This is the way the EU has to follow as Europe is about uniting people; not about integrating states. Just as the Kyiv Biennial theme “Allied’’ is dwelling upon the idea of interconnecting citizens of the European East. Kyiv Biennial is exploring the role of modern technologies, culture and arts in shaping political systems and social order.

Nothing is more important for Europe after the pandemic. We need to make sure that modern technologies are compatible with European social theory – not disruptive. The oldest, most noble and comprehensive concept in European social theory is the republic. Thinking a digital European Republic is the task for the 21st century to which Ukrainians belong.

The Age of Unsettlement: Possible Paths towards a New Political Imagination Lecture by Madina Tlostanova

In spite of the growing inequalities and new forms of dehumanization and dispensability of lives, most living beings on Earth are marked today by an overarching sense of unsettlement. Unsettlement is an existential condition that is paradoxically shared by the most and least privileged, it embraces not only the lives of migrants and refugees, the former “second world” inhabitants left in the void, but also multiple beings, human and other, whose lives are destroyed by climate change and broader, by what is myopically referred to as the Anthropocene. The leitmotif of unsettlement is a pervasive chronophobic sense of defuturing, of temporality that is literally “out of joint”.

However, unsettlement does not have to be only negative as it can also open possibilities and most importantly trigger an evolvement of a new political imagination that would make refuturing possible. Most probably this new political imagination and agency will not come from defunct international organizations and outdated institutions and regimes such as the nation state or democracy. But it can arrive from regional and even local communities of survival, change and re-existence that could enter into a complex relationality and form deep coalitions grounded in difference rather than sameness.

These coalitions can build on the forgotten and erased cultural, historical, religious, linguistic, cosmological, cosmotechnical, geopolitical and corpopolitical links that do not necessarily coincide with normalized modern/ colonial ideological binaries and borders. This does not mean going back to some constructed archaic tradition, but rather exploring the paths of alliances and collaborations that were indeed discarded and disqualified by modernity thus dooming many nations to forever remain in the semi-peripheral catching-up mode. Before it can arrive as a communal effort, a new political imagination and a new agency needs to do critical memory work for refuturing. One of the most promising and interesting regions in this sense is undoubtedly Eastern Europe.

Endnotes to Alterglobalist Art History

Talk by Agata Jakubowska and Magdalena Radomska In his last unfinished book (Globalizing the Art of East-Central Europe, to be published by the Igor Zabel Association for Culture and Theory in 2021) Piotr Piotrowski proposed to rework the analytic paradigm in the alterglobalist direction that would lead to constitution of what he called “alterglobalist art history”. The core of the project of alterglobalist art history lies in its attempt to determine the relationship between global art history and postcolonial studies and the impact of the latter on the issue of East European artistic peripheries.

In our talk we will present two possible ways in which alterglobalist art history can be approached critically and practiced. Magdalena Radomska will focus on its tensions with Marxism and thus will approach the problem of possible overcoming of post-colonial studies – both from Piotrowski’s perspective and the Marxist one. Agata Jakubowska will talk about rethinking feminist art from Eastern Europe in a global perspective by challenging the dominant conceptual framework.

Concert: Decolonize Your Mind Society, Kurws, Le Cru, Dolgiy & Sidorkin Allied – Kyiv Biennial 2021 presents a concert of avant-garde, free jazz and improvisation music – the direction which was developed undercover in the former Eastern Bloc. This experimental approach to jazz is aimed to break with musical conventions, such as regular tempos, tones, and chord changes as well as to deconstruct and transgress the architecture of modern American and European music. A combination of genres the participating collectives work with are pointed against the genre as such – their works create a polygonal ritual, becoming a sonic expression of decompressed complexity of being in the contemporary world.

Revisiting Yugoslav Memorial Production from the Socialist Period Talk by Beti Žerovc and Sanja Horvatinčić

Monuments which were built in former socialist Yugoslavia to mark and honour the events related to World War II have been catching the attention of Western scholars and the wider public for at least a decade. This interest has been manifested on various levels, from individuals who are “hunting” the ruins that appear to be forgotten and neglected, local and international contemporary artists who evolve their work around topics of memory and politics, to survey exhibitions in high-brow institutions such as MoMA. Still, in the context from which they originate, this vast body of public art has been caught between political restruction, disinheritance, and historical revisionism on the one side, and the lack of systematic research and informed analysis that would situate various aspects relevant for their understanding in specific context(s) of their production, on the other.

In our talk we will present the questions, approaches, and perspectives that our edited volume on the Yugoslav memorial production aims to encompass, among others: What monumental practices and traditions preceded the development of public commemorative art in socialist period; Who commissioned those monuments and what was the influence of Yugoslav politics of culture and memory on their production; Who were their authors, and what are the formal and typological features of those memorial structures; What is their relation to the comparative memorial production in Europe; How did the commemorative practices frame and direct their social use; What are the challenges of the popular exploitation of images depicting this heritage today. The characteristics and specificities of this production will be discussed in relation to the Yugoslav version of socialism.

Presentation by Marta Cillero, Beral Madra, Katarzyna Hertz and Magdalena Siemaszko Room to Bloom is a new feminist platform that brings together emerging artists from across the world who create ecological and postcolonial narratives for Europe and beyond. In this public event, members of Room to Bloom come together to present the newly established platform and discuss the most urgent feminist challenges in the international art scene. The event will also present Hybrids and humans/She-Wolf, the artistic project by Katarzyna Hertz and Magdalena Siemaszko (Kultura Kresu Collective & Room to Bloom

artists). With this project, Kultura Kresu Collective wants to unveil the threads of reproduction, gender and race – that becomes important not only for humans, as the ecofeminist theorists remind us, but also for animals and elements of our environmental surroundings. Who has the right to live, reproduce and why? We refer to the discourses of modern environmentalism, as well as asking what care, protection and sharing mean in the posthuman age. In an open discussion with the public, the event will pose questions on the possibility of coexistence, nonhuman agency and interspecies ethics, post-scientific position in the human-nature bonding, as well as the sources of fear and control, stability, coherence and responsibility.

On the Interception of Modern Culture by Post-Socialist Governments Lecture by Keti Chukhrov

There is a common belief that post-socialist authoritarian regimes obstruct the public representation of modern cultural practices in every possible way: they ban exhibitions, persecute artists, exert control over museum and educational programs, and prevent films and literary works from being released. Thus, they supposedly act as adherents of traditional values.

However, it becomes more and more clear that things, in fact, are much more complicated. The purpose for the governments’ intrusion into experimental practices is not to establish traditional values. Many representatives of the governing elites have no idea about traditions, be it in cultural, or sociohistorical, context. The technology of dealing with modernity is not a rejection of it in favor of traditional values, but, on the contrary, the appropriation of the right to be called modern; only supplemented by the right of the “sovereign” to invent the meaning for it in correspondence with the background and the political interests of a particular government elite. During the last decade, Russian cultural policy has been built in exactly this way. The lecture will analyze three stages of the appropriation of modern culture by post-Soviet governments taking into account the political-economic consequences.

Dreams for Sisterhood

Presentation of the discussion platform by Asia Bazdyrieva, Ivan Melnychuk, Lada Nakonechna, Ramona Schacht, Uliana Bychenkova, Yulia Kosterieva In the Soviet paradigm of friendly city arrangements, there was a distinction between “sister cities” and “twinned cities.” The first option was possible only for cities from the Socialist Republics. The network of sister cities also included some united cities, lower by status. The gap between “sister cities” and “twinned cities” facilitated a coherent image of friendly relations. The sister city program organically fitted into the myth about the “big family” of fraternal nations which, in turn, fuelled formal similarities between these cities. After the disintegration of the USSR, all “twinned cities” became “sister cities.” In the new reality, city twinning lost its selective nature, as well as the similarities that those cities shared. The number of Kyiv’s sister cities has increased from three to several dozens, with their relations becoming abstractly duplicated. The cultural components of these arrangements became routine, something for a municipal official to handle during a regular day. It’s hard to understand where this sisterhood comes from and in what direction it goes in this archaic ceremony. Is the dialogue between the community-driven initiatives and self-organized institutions able to find new “common places” within the infrastructure of sister cities? The discussion platform Dreams for Sisterhood seeks answers for this and other questions.

The realist movement in the nineteenth century begins with an image of work, while in the twentieth century the social realist artist takes up the portrayal of labor as a central theme, either under the patronage of the socialist state/ welfare state or in opposition to the ruling ideologies. Social realist painters or social documentary photographers celebrated the worker and positioned him/her as a revolutionary driver of history. Given the precarious and radically shifting nature of working life at the beginning of the twenty-first century, most recently accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is not surprising that the subject of work has returned as a central preoccupation of contemporary artists and that many have been working on re-actualization of the aesthetic conventions and formal traditions of realism. Moreover, many are returning, in various ways, to the quintessentially realist form of the worker portrait. To what extent do they engage knowingly with the realist conventions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries? What kind of labor and class or group is central to today’s realism? And how do contemporary artists think about the confrontation of the middle-class audience of art institutions and the people depicted in the artworks?

The Suits That We Have in Our Country Are Not Suitable for the Tropical Climate Performative lecture by Bartosz Frąckowiak and Max Cegielski

This performative lecture juxtaposes two narratives based on the studies which Biennale Warszawa was carrying out within a long-term artistic and research programme devoted to the relations between Central and Eastern Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The first of the two, based on the ethnographic interviews carried out in Lebanon in 2018 and 2019 by Inga Hajdarowicz (in cooperation with Prof.

Beata Kowalska), collects the stories of Palestinians and Lebanese who in the 1970s and ’80s lived, studied and worked in Poland and later for various reasons decided to leave for Lebanon. In their narratives, memories from the

period of the Polish political transformation are interlaced with the civil war in Lebanon. We hear them comparing the living situation in Poland of the early ’90s with the socio-economic reality of the Middle East.

The second narrative line reflects the fascinating archival research carried out in collaboration with the well-known reporter Max Cegielski.

From visual footage and articles from magazines such as The Polish Review (1962-1972), Poland, to the archive of Micha Kalecki and ‘Polish school of development’, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, LOT, Orbis, Budimex, Polservice, and other international trade companies, we tell the story of colourful social situations taking place behind the scenes of the official politics and trade.

In this situation, it becomes critical to create new alliances and coalitions as well as support networks that would have the power to oppose authoritarian tendencies and create an alternative world. What is Global East and Where to Find It? Rethinking the Universal Lecture by Jan Sowa

The category of Global East has recently emerged in academic circles as an alternative to thinking about Eastern Europe in terms of its post-Soviet legacy.

It is also supposed to complement and complicate the binary division of Global North and South. This conceptual turn, although somehow interesting in its merits, is intriguing first of all as a symptom referring us to the Real that

remains hidden under the symbolic constructions and imaginary representations of public debate. This Real attests to the fact that, despite what many believed three decades ago at the end of the Cold War, Eastern Europe has proven to be basically different from the West while at the same time not fitting easily into the North-South divide. For this reason it has been neglected in most contemporary academic and theoretical endeavors, as illustrated by the almost complete lack of interest in it within the realm of Western, Northern or Southern postcolonial theory. At the same time, the very concept of Global East seems to create just another identitarian label that may provide some consolation to those in Eastern Europe who feel neglected by history, however it can hardly achieve more than that and especially it does not look interesting as a tool of political struggle beyond the liberal horizon of recognition. Thus departing from the concept of Global East, we should rather search for conceptualization that would allow us to both grasp the specificity of the European East and create a common front of political struggle that could go beyond the geographical confines of the region. In other words, we need to rethink the universal.

An artistic analysis of historical episodes when the voice of power fails and loses its articulation is one of the directions of Karabinovych’s practice. Alo, Alo! appeals to the phenomenon of an event of authoritarian power loss. The extreme moment of Romanian history when Nicolae Ceausescu was ousted is depicted only through an object and documentary sound, while the audience becomes a bystander of the revolutionary flow choreography seen through the figure of a diminishing dictator.

From the depths of a black fur cap we hear the voice belonging to Ceausescu – this is a lopped fragment of his last public speech.

Rambling talk, ragged scream “Alo!,” slipping into mumbling. The cry of revolution is concentrated in the pauses of this speech and is about to burst through.

The only thing that reminds of the former greatness is the luxurious black fur cap.

How and in which moment exactly this metaphorical hat falls down from the head of power?

Thank You For Ruling Us 2020

“As I look at my mother today, her body stiffened and in pain as a result of the harsh tasks she performed for nearly fifteen years, standing on an assembly line attaching tops to glass jars, with only one ten-minute bathroom break each morning and another in the afternoon, I can’t but be struck by what social inequality means concretely, physically,” the French intellectual Didier Eribon writes about his mother in his book of memoirs Returning to Reims.

The photographs of Jiří Skála do not show any specific faces, and so the protagonists of his works remain anonymous. But they are real people who make a living through manual labor. Like Eribon, Skála is interested in their bodies, especially how they are affected by the repetitive tasks that they engage in every day. The photographs are blurry and hazy, and feel unreal, dreamlike.

They seem out of place at an exhibition; after all, galleries are traditionally a place for the upper middle class. In his work, Skála has long explored the relationship between labor and the socio-economic order. Above all, he is interested in the social status of precarious artistic work, which he often explores against the backdrop of the relationship his parents – former blue-collar workers – have had with art.

The Culture States – Exposition des arts et techniques appliquées à la vie moderne project takes its subtitle from the historical Exposition internationale des arts et techniques appliquées à la vie moderne, held in 1937 in Paris. This fair has been one of the most spectacular examples of the relation between Culture and Nation, from the confrontation between the Nazi and Soviet pavilions to the display of the imperialist cultural conceptions of France or the UK through their colonial pavilions.

Seven decades after this key moment, what is the relation between the political and cultural entities in Europe? In its ability to inquire about the politics of space, Ministère de l’Architecture (MA) has commissioned a research and production study in the field of territorial ergonomy.

This study focuses on the multi-layered principle of spatial re-qualification that continues to affect any cultural zone.

Intending to curate a world exhibition on the model of the 1937 one, Culture States is dedicated to the disappeared states of the European peninsula, and examines the state as a constructed level of space representation, and thus as a deconstructable one. A scale of control in itself, the state obstructs territorial observation and restricts cultural patterns. Culture States designs devices of analysis aspiring to disclose the nocuous dependence of cultural constructions on the logic of states. This logic vitally calculates the extension, maintenance and lengthening of the state’s exercise of inclusive power.

The instrumentalization of cultural forms is plainly part of this exercise. This instrumentalization is the core theme of Culture States. During the Kyiv Biennial, Société Réaliste presents a selection of maps from the Culture States corpus.

Lavish Issue 2020 The video Lavish Issue presents the Romany political scientist and human rights activist Edita Stejskalová through a staged visit to the Müller Villa in Prague in which the filmmaker creates a dialogue between her protagonist and Adolf Loos’s famous modernist house – today a national cultural monument. The building’s interior and exterior design offer the possibility of a symbolic interpretation. The subdued facade, contrasted with its richly decorated interior, forms an excellent foundation for exploring the relationship between the public and the private. The villa and its luxury interior thus represent a high standard of living, while the fact that this originally private space is open to the public opens up questions regarding the accumulation or redistribution of cultural and other forms of wealth. The building’s status as a monument of cultural heritage forces us to consider questions related to the sharing of goods and societal values.

Visitors cannot touch anything or move it.

The fact that the house cannot be used functionally because of its status as a museum only further encourages the imagination. The staged video presents its protagonist in a ceremonial role. She is given an opportunity to give a short speech inside the villa in which she explores issues of social status, forms of social inequality, and the individual experience of moving through spaces with different cultures and languages.

The project documents the sluices on the Dnieper river, masterpieces of Soviet architecture and engineering built on the ancient trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks, one of the most important trade arteries of medieval Europe. The route which united Northern and Southern Europe through centuries has nowadays been blocked by corruption and lack of state financing, showing the inability to incorporate the Soviet economic and industrial legacy or restore the continental historical connections.

No Gods No Masters reproduces Ghost Tape No. 10, played as part of Operation Wandering Soul, which appealed to the Vietnamese belief that if correct burial rituals are not followed, then the soul of the deceased is displaced and doomed to wander in limbo. The Ghost Tape is part of an ambient soundtrack that stitches together a montage of edited and visually manipulated footage that at times distorts and blurs perceptual definition. But those haunting and unearthly sounds are counterbalanced by moments of sonic respite in the form of silence, Buddhist chanting, bird calls, or synthetic ambient noise.

Shifts in location (Mo Cay and Black Virgin Mountain in the rural South, Hai Duong in the North), that include tropical landscape, riverine journey, private home, and ritual performance, ground the artistic rendering of each filmic segment (e.g. high-contrast negative images, panning vertical panels, blurring and partial pixelization). These locales hold significance in personal and public geographies, whether as strategic sites for the deployment of Operation Wandering Soul during the Vietnam War or as the artist’s hometown where domestic rituals are performed as a matter of course. As a whole, the film lends itself to perceptual distortion and cognitive uncertainty, a dreamlike experience moving through the photographic, painterly, cinematic, and digital image. The artist here is a wanderer in terms of her research into military history and present-day ethnography, but the film itself performs both a processional and oneiric navigation of images and soundscapes. No Gods No Masters thus elicits subjective association, recall, and curiosity through its visual and sonic texturing of the abstract and the archival.

Flower Smuggler When Things 2017–2019 Occur 2016 This is a story about Tamane’s grandmother, who once became a ‘flower smuggler.’ The project consists of flowers photographed by her grandmother – flowers are the main subject of her grandmother’s photo albums – and documents that her grandmother received from the Federal Customs Service of Russia, as well as photographs taken by the artist of the cemetery in Abrene – the resting place of her ancestors. The artist’s grandmother was accused of contraband when she crossed the border between Latvia and Russia with two flower pots that she had planned to bring to the cemetery of her grandfather in Abrene. Once part of Latvia, in 1945, the city of Abrene was incorporated into the USSR, and today it is part of the Russian Federation. Through uncovering the personal experience of one individual, the project demonstrates that historical events and transfers of power can leave lasting consequences and can continue to affect contemporary society.

When Things Occur is based on Skype conversations with Gaza-based photographers, fixers and drivers who were behind specific images that were transmitted from screen to screen in the summer of 2014.

The film probes the face of mourning and grief: its digital embodiment, transmission, and representation. It asks how the gaze gets channeled within the digital realm and how empathy travels digitally. Equally, how the documentary signifier – and its abstraction – operate when viewing suffering. What exactly is viewing suffering ‘at a distance’ – and how many meters or kilometers is that? What is the behavior and political economy of the image of war?

And who is the ‘local’ in the representation of war? What is the daily routine of those who represent war?

This work thematizes the European-wide deforestation that is being driven by Ikea and other globally active firms, and focuses in particular on Romanian old-growth forests, in order to heighten the awareness of the interdependency between rapid (furniture) consumption and the clearing of the forests. The point of departure was a research carried out in September 2020 in the image archive of Mihai Oroveanu, which contains photographs of Romanian industrial and natural landscapes of the 20th century. Susanne Kriemann conceived a ballad that ‘weaves together’ the facts concerning the destruction of the virgin forest, industrial production, as well as forms of labor under the conditions of climate change. Used for the silkscreen were pigments from discarded articles of Ikea furniture, with recycled paper as a support material. Landscape elements such as valleys and trees, found in the archive of Oroveanu, serve as sources of inspiration for the visual shaping of the text.

The history of Romanian forestry, in particular the long-standing illegal logging of Europe’s last remaining primeval forest, highlights the urgency of the topic: the trees themselves, some of them centuries old, their processing by the furniture industry and their reprocessing, serve as a living archive.

origin were killed by the Nazis during the Holocaust. In general, there were several Jewish cemeteries in Kolomyia, each of which has now been either repurposed or destroyed. The oldest cemetery of the 18th century used to be next to the town hall. The disciples of the founder of Hasidism Baal Shem Tov, a frequent visitor of Kolomyia, are buried there. Another cemetery was transformed by the Soviet authorities into a park in 1967. The matzevahs from the latter were taken to a backyard, which was later documented by the artists in their video. As a nightmarish baton passed by the Nazis to the Soviets, the responsibility for forgetting the Jewish population of Kolomyia has now reached the residents of a housing co-op. The range of those responsible narrows to a specific community. The residents annually order the services of cleaners and painters to tidy up the private area before the spring holidays. Unaware that their choreography resembles a commemorative ritual, they use brooms and knives to clean the tombstones (matzevahs) placed in front of Khrushchev era apartment blocks.

A tombstone from the Jewish cemetery vibrates underfoot and, regardless of the area of its relocation, still retains its original meaning. Decolonized Kolomyia comes out of someone else’s dream into its own “castle of power hopes.”

Jiří Žák

Jiří Žák’s video installation is a poetic tale of a man who we get to know as a sensitive individual with artistic interests and ambitions, and also as someone with an interest in weapons. A combination of family ties and the social and political context in which he lives lead him to decide to commit a violent act. The installation is inspired by actual events, but it nevertheless blends fact with fiction. It is thus a distinctive reflection on our country’s post-communist transformation, with a focus on its wilder, more criminal side.

In the main role are the Musela brothers, weapons manufacturers. The younger Pavel, nicknamed the “king of the weapons industry,” was involved in the controversial privatization of the Most Coal Company in the 1990s. In 2008, he was found in the woods near Zlín under suspicious circumstances, with serious, permanent brain injuries. His older brother Karel, among other things a passionate landscape painter, was convinced that Pavel was attacked by people from a rival weapons company, and so he decided to avenge him.

Special material. These two words somewhat euphemistically refer to weapons and military technology in the archival documents of former Czechoslovakia. These were important Czechoslovak commodities, which were exported to various parts of the world during the 20th century. With the rise of the Communist Party government in Czechoslovakia in 1948, there was a turn in this area towards cooperation with fraternal socialist regimes. The Syrian Arab Republic stood out of a long line of these friendly states in the framework of trade cooperation. The first contract with Czechoslovakia was signed in the second half of the forties and mutual trade and cultural dialogue lasted until 1991. The Debt situates us in the early nineties when we witness the negotiation between government representatives of the two countries.

The subject of their negotiations is the debt that Syria has gradually increased over the years. Through fictional dialogue, Žák deals with the reality of the Czechoslovak arms industry and the end of one long friendship.

Transperiphery Movement: Global Eastern Europe and Global South Curated by Eszter Szakács and Zoltán Ginelli

Can Hungarian settlers in Latin America, Cuban migrant workers in Hungary, and Afro-Asian students in Eastern Europe have a common history?

Is there a shared colonial history of Eastern Europe and the Global South?

The exhibition looks at the historical relationships and parallels between the global periphery (the Global South) and semiperiphery (Eastern Europe) in the 20th century through the concepts of coloniality, peripherality, and migration.

How did people in these regions, seemingly divided by various differences, perceive, interact with, and shape each other? The exhibition puts forth a global and multi-focal perspective that not only demonstrates the importance of unearthing the now forgotten relations between Eastern Europe and the Global South, but also probes what these relations meant from the perspective of the Global South.

The exhibition combines archival materials, personal memories, and contemporary art. Its critical question is how to de-center the history dominated by the global center from the perspective of the global peripheries and by re-centering peripheral positions.

The Transperiphery Movement seeks to counter the center-dominated, hierarchical view of history by re-telling the histories of resistance strategies and emancipative possibilities of interperipherality. Visitors may embark on this transperipheral travel at the exhibition, which seeks to explore the shared, transnational history of Eastern Europe and the Global South.

Curated by Marta Cillero, Marcela Caldas and Ségolène Pruvot (European Alternatives and Studio Rizoma) Room to Bloom is a new transfeminist platform that brings together emerging artists from all across the world to examine and create ecological and postcolonial narratives for Europe and beyond. By associating artists and creators who – too often – occupy a peripheral place in the world of arts and backgrounds often considered to be geographically peripheral, Room to Bloom aims at building a collective transnational feminist discourse on art and culture that can be fully informed by the experience and knowledge of the peripheries and bring its relevance to the center. Whereas migrants and women, from Tamara de Lempicka to Sonia Delaunay, may famously have contributed to the making of European Arts, their access to the world of arts remains extremely limited today. Beyond a few famous faces, women and migrants struggle to effectively contribute to the making of European cultural and artistic discourse.

With the Room to Bloom exhibition in Kyiv, we aim to showcase artists’ views and valuable perspectives to convey that it is more than time to shift the rules of power to favor commoning within the art world institutions and to co-create new practices that subvert patriarchalism and racism and offer challenging visions for a fertile ground for multiplicity and coexistence.

The Blue Continuum 2021 The Blue Continuum – part 1 by Magali Dougoud connects together all the womxn whose paths and bodies crossed the rivers and canals of the city of Berlin. They died and were killed there but their bodies and minds have risen together to form an original memory that joins distant pasts and potential futures. A new population has emerged from these losses and the violence they carry: the Womxn Waves.

By reclaiming the sounds, textures and intervals of their voices they started to rebel. Once the water contained in their bodies merged with the one that contained them, they were ready to build a common body for the uprising. In a poetic approach and a narrative aesthetic close to speculative fiction, the video questions the intrinsic

violence of societies and mostly the one directed against womxn and correlates it with the domination exercised by humans over nature. What will we reconstruct together from all our losses?

In this work, a sudden climatic change brings a group of migrants that face survival in Europe to live in subterranean environments. In the underground, they learn essential living lessons from soils and a multitude of earth beings, and they pay attention to the survival skills of roots and the routines and cycles of other species.

Impacted by deceleration, they learn to enjoy the vibrancy of stillness. And they plant histories with others that counter the excess of light, speed and production through chaos, persistence and chance.

This story is woven around the notion that we are set to enter into deeper crises and thus could be anytime thrown into utterly unknown conditions, such that our senses of self and reality would no longer be recognizable to us or would mean the wreckage of our species. Having grown up in Peru in the ‘80s, in the absence of basic covered needs and in the dark of frequent blackouts, we dug on these lived memories to extrapolate the learnings that generation made then. The story hints at how a disconnection from productivity and efficacy creates an opportunity for trans-species ancestral knowledge to come to the fore. As a chance to introduce ourselves to the rhythm of other songs beyond accumulation and progress.

As uncanny as a body 2021 As uncanny as a body is a video work which documents the constant transition of a dancing body from an abled human state into a glitched, injured, nonhuman one.

Based on the development and use of a GAN model, the visual data of the dancer is processed, and figures that manifest this in-between state are produced. What happens when AI is not used in order to optimize the performance of the dancer but rather to generate body types and movements lying beyond fixed standards and classifications? How does a poorly trained AI model affect dancing bodies? Do they seem injured, distorted or in constant transformation? Dance as a practice that entails an act of change offers a ground to study a body’s possible becoming thanks to the application of machine learning. As uncanny as a body speculates upon AI-induced injuries in order to discuss trauma, connect familiarity to uncanniness, and raise questions about the witnessing and acknowledgment of our gaze.

“Sing in me, Muse, ...” is a visual collage of algorithmic epic prose, using screen records of Google’s instant translator.

The app operates by accessing a phone’s camera input image and is (for some languages) surprisingly dysfunctional. In the 2019 version, the model recognized words, phrases and titles of so-called masterpieces in surfaces: structures and patterns of tiles, wood, buildings’ skeletons, pavements, brick walls, branches, beer glasses strung in a line and fish scales. This defect allows us to assume what kinds of datasets the tool’s model has been trained with – predominantly religious, medical, and gastronomic vocabulary such as insults and nationalities.

“Bitch”, for instance, such as “judas”, “jesus”, “belarus” and “ashes” recurred in each ›field detection‹. This gathered, quite precarious subject matter was woven into the formal framework of the Odyssey’s invoking the muse. The prosaic textual layer is presented by Lemer, an avatar, whose roles as author and actress blur reciprocally.

Parliament’s Square pulls from the Parliament Square in London and converts it into a giant chess board with statues of Winston Churchill and Mahatma Gandhi as chess pieces, but are they kings or are they pawns? Parliament Square Park in London has a statue of Mahatma Gandhi right opposite the statue of Winston Churchill.

The two shared an epic rivalry that sealed the fate of the British Empire. Both universally recognizable icons of the Empire.

The game of chess was born out of the Indian game called Chaturanga before the 600s AD. Through constant invasions and conquests in an attempt to expand land control, the game of Chaturanga spread to the East and eventually to Europe as chess.

The game embodies war and conquests in its play and in its history.

The Density of a Walk 2021 A spatial exercise to understand the embodied experience of two cities: Mexico City and Weimar. The short film, The Density of a Walk, is the resulting documentation of an immersive reading between Denise Lee and Valeria Montoya where they exchanged perspectives during an online, live-streamed walk through their respective cities, reflecting on the one hand on the spatial atmospheres of these places, their bodies and rhythms, and on the other hand the complexities of occupying urban space in a foreign, feminine body.

750 is a video installation based on a miniDV archive shot in the Ukrainian city of Lviv during the celebration of 750 years since its founding. The video speaks of herd instinct, mass behavior and crowd control and is constructed as a multiscreen centered on the idea of surveillance cameras, movement tracking and facial recognition of people who are gathering in places of historical memory urged by a need for entertainment, wanting to be among strangers and following them with no particular goal. This is a project about loss of liberty in the times when people are treated as objects for machine learning: everyone is a target and everything is recorded. It questions the possibility of perception of other humans as mysterious and unpredictable beings without calculating their emotions algorithmically but following senses and intuition.

Mixed media installation by Aleksei Taruts, 2021 Splish splash. Sip. Dip. Hold your breath and plunge into the bathe of Πόντος Ἄξενος. Its undertow leads inland and further, delving into the Earth’s crust, drilling through the geological formations. How would this invisible flow shift the European currents?

The hose segments wound off in the exhibition space serve as a reservoir for a cursed geopolitical liquid: sea water collected from the strait of Kerch that washes against the Crimean peninsula. The resource is renewable as long as the piece is part of the exhibition complex. Historical events are ecological objects that appear in the framework of global industrialization processes – straits turned into military interfaces, rivers into autobahns, sea beds into transcontinental streaming platforms. Fossils are dead. Phantoms are gas. Have phantoms ever been more decorative?

Unlike a generic express delivery item that has an added phantasmal value that forces it to exist and to be “suggested” online – “Undertow” is aware that it feeds upon geopolitical nightmares. The European borders happened to be washed out by a flux, creating a leak in a thalassocratic pax.

Would an inflated dragon scare the ephemeral forces of the past charged with an ever-growing blast of technological might?

Її підводний потік прямує в напрямку суші й далі, проникаючи вглиб земної кори, просочуючись крізь геологічні формування. Як цей невидимий наплив змінить європейські течії? Розмотані у виставковому просторі сегменти шлангу слугують резервуаром для проклятої рідини — морської води, набраної у Керченській протоці, що омиває Кримський півострів. Ресурс відновлюється за умови, що твір є частиною виставкового комплексу. Історичні події — це екологічні об’єкти, що постають в рамках процесу глобальної індустріалізації: протоки перетворилися на військові інтерфейси, річки — в автобани, морське дно — в трансконтинентальну стрімінгову платформу. Копалини мертві. Примари газоподібні. Чи бували примари коли-небудь більш декоративні? Гра в шахи походить від індійської в лусці риби. Завдяки цьому дефекту ми гри під назвою чатуранґа, що з’явилася в можемо припустити, якими наборами 600-х роках нашої ери. Моторошне, наче тіло 2021 «Моторошне, наче тіло» — це відеоробота, що документує постійний перехід танцюючого тіла зі здорового людського стану в ушкоджений і травмований нелюдський. На основі розробки та використання моделі GAN обробляються візуальні дані танцюристки й продукуються фігури, що виражають цей проміжний стан. Що відбувається, коли штучний інтелект (ШІ) застосовується не для оптимізації виступу танцюристки, а радше для створення тілесних пропорцій та рухів, що не вписуються у традиційні стандарти й класифікації? Як недосконалий ШІ впливає на танцюючі тіла? Чи вони травмовані та спотворені, чи радше у процесі постійної трансформації? Танець як практика, що передбачає акт зміни, може слугувати основою для вивчення ймовірного становлення тіла завдяки застосуванню машинного навчання. «Моторошне, наче тіло» осмислює спричинені штучним інтелектом ушкодження, спонукаючи до дискусії про травму, поєднуючи знайоме з моторошним та порушуючи питання про присутність та роль нашого погляду.

Кураторки: Марта Чіллеро, Марсела Кальдас та Сеґолен Прюво (European Alternatives та Studio Rizoma) «Простір процвітання» — це нова трансфеміністична платформа, що об’єднує молодих художниць з усього світу задля вивчення та створення екологічних постколоніальних наративів для Європи і не тільки. Об’єднуючи художниць та авторок, які часто займають периферійну позицію у світі мистецтва і походять з місцевостей, що вважаються географічно периферійними, «Простір процвітання» спрямований на побудову колективного транснаціонального феміністичного дискурсу про мистецтво й культуру, що міг би ґрунтуватися на досвіді та знанні периферій і донести свою релевантність до центру. Хоча мігрантки та жінки – від Тамари Лемпицької до Соні Делоне — зробили важливий внесок у становлення європейського мистецтва, їхній доступ до світу мистецтва сьогодні є надзвичайно обмеженим. Більшості жінок та мігранток, за винятком кількох відомих фігур, досі доводиться виборювати можливість долучитися до створення європейського культурного та мистецького дискурсу. Блакитний континуум 2021 «Блакитний континуум, частина 1» Маґалі Дуґу об’єднує усіх жінок, чиї шляхи та тіла коли-небудь перетинали річки та канали Берліна. Там вони померли або були вбиті, однак їхні тіла й думки зібралися разом, щоб сформувати унікальний спогад, здатний поєднати далеке минуле з потенційним майбутнім. З усіх цих втрачених життів і насильства, якого вони зазнали, постала нова спільнота — Жіночий фронт. Повернувши собі звучання, текстури й інтервали власних голосів, вони почали бунтувати. Як тільки вода, що міститься у їхніх тілах, змішалася з водою, що містила їх, вони були

готові сформувати спільне тіло для повстання. Чи можуть угорські поселенці в Латинській Америці, кубинські трудові мігранти в Угорщині та афро-азійські студенти у Східній Європі мати спільну історію? Чи існує спільна колоніальна історія Східної Європи та Глобального Півдня? Виставка розглядає історичні взаємозв’язки та паралелі між глобальною периферією (Глобальний Південь) та напівпериферією (Східна Європа) у ХХ столітті через концепції колоніальності, периферійності та міграції. Як люди у цих на перший погляд роз’єднаних різними відмінностями регіонах сприймали, взаємодіяли та впливали одне на одного? Виставка пропонує глобальну та різносторонню перспективу, що не лише демонструє важливість актуалізації забутих відносин між Східною Європою та Глобальним Півднем, але й досліджує, що ці відносини означали з точки зору Глобального Півдня. У виставці поєднуються архівні матеріали, особисті спогади та сучасне мистецтво. Її ключове питання у тому, як децентрувати історію, в якій домінує глобальний центр, з точки зору глобальних периферій та рецентрувати периферійні позиції. «Транспериферійний рух» протистоїть домінуванню центру та ієрархічному погляду на історію, переповідаючи історію спротиву та емансипативних можливостей міжпериферійності. Здається, це Борг: був наш Карел, — епілог довгої сказала вона 2020 дружби 2020 Відеоінсталяція Їржи Жака — це поетична легенда про чоловіка, якого ми пізнаємо як чутливу людину з мистецькими інтересами та амбіціями, а також з особливим інтересом до зброї. Інсталяція базується на реальних подіях, однак у ній змішуються факт і фікція. Це своєрідна рефлексія над посткомуністичною трансформацією Чехії з акцентом на її кримінальних аспектах. В головній ролі — виробники зброї брати Мусела. Молодший Павел, якого прозвали «королем збройної індустрії», був причетний до контроверсійної приватизації Мостівської вугільної компанії у 1990-х роках. 2008 року його за підозрілих обставин знайшли у лісі біля Зліна з серйозними й невиліковними травмами мозку. Його старший брат Карел, завзятий художник-пейзажист, був упевнений, що Павла атакували люди з конкурентної компанії, тож він вирішує за нього помститися.

Матеріали спеціального призначення. Ці три слова слугують евфемізмом для збройних та військових технологій в архівних документах колишньої Чехословаччини. Це були важливі чехословацькі товари, які у ХХ столітті експортували у різні частини світу. З приходом до влади комуністичного уряду 1948 року в цій сфері відбувся поворот до співпраці із братськими соціалістичними режимами. Сирійська Арабська Республіка вирізнялася серед численних дружніх держав у рамках торгової співпраці. Перший контракт з Чехословаччиною підписали у другій половині 40-х, і взаємна торгівля та культурний діалог тривали до 1991 року. «Борг» переносить нас на початок 90-х, де ми стаємо свідками переговорів між представниками урядів двох держав. Темою переговорів є борг, який Сирія поступово наростила протягом років. Через вигаданий діалог Жак зображує реалії чехословацької збройної індустрії та кінець тривалої дружби.

«Коли щось стається» базується на розмовах по скайпу з фотографами, фіксерами та водіями з Ґази — авторами зображень, що влітку 2014 року мігрували з екрану на екран. Фільм вивчає обличчя скорботи і горя, його цифрове втілення, передачу та репрезентацію. Він проблематизує спрямування погляду та переміщення емпатії у цифровому просторі, а також те, як документальний означник і його абстракція діють під час споглядання страждань. Що означає споглядати страждання «на відстані» й скільки це метрів чи кілометрів? Якою є поведінка та політекономія образу війни? Ким є «місцеві» у репрезентації війни? Яким є повсякдення тих, хто представляє війну?

Це історія про бабусю Діани Тамане, котра колись була «квітковою контрабандисткою». Проєкт складається з фотографій квітів, які робила її бабуся (зображення квітів переважають у фотоальбомах бабусі), документів, які вона отримала від Федеральної митної служби Росії, а також фотографій, які художниця зробила на цвинтарі в Абрене — місці, де спочивають її предки. Бабусю художниці звинуватили в контрабанді, коли вона перетинала кордон між Латвією та Росією з двома горщиками квітів, які планувала принести на цвинтар її діда в Абрене. Місто Абрене, що колись належало Латвії, у 1945 році стало частиною СРСР, а зараз знаходиться в Російській Федерації. Ці місця мають значення з точки зору особистої та політичної географії: як стратегічні об’єкти для здійснення операції «Блудні душі» під час В’єтнамської війни та як рідне місто художниці, де побутові ритуали виконуються як щось само собою зрозуміле. В цілому фільм слугує викривленню сприйняття та когнітивній непевності, відображаючи сомнамбулічний досвід блукання серед фотографічних, живописних, кінематографічних та цифрових зображень. Художниця тут наче мандрівниця з точки зору її дослідження військової історії та сучасної етнографії, однак і сам фільм здійснює процесуальну та оніричну навігацію серед образів та звукових ландшафтів. Таким чином, за допомогою візуальної та звукової текстури абстрактного та архівного, «Ні Бога, ні пана» викликає суб’єктивні асоціації, спогади та допитливість.

Відео «Питання розкоші» представляє ромську політологиню та правозахисницю Едіту Стейскалову під час постановочного візиту до Вілли Мюллера у Празі, де авторка фільмів створює діалог між героїнею та відомим модерністським будинком Адольфа Лооса — національною пам’яткою культури. Дизайн інтер’єру та екстер’єру будівлі слугують об’єктами символічної інтерпретації. Стриманий фасад, що контрастує з багато оздобленим інтер’єром, є вдалою основою для дослідження відносин між приватним і публічним. Вілла та її розкішний інтер’єр, таким чином, репрезентують високий рівень життя; водночас те, що її початково приватний простір відкритий для громадськості, піднімає питання щодо накопичення та перерозподілу культурного та інших форм достатку. Статус будівлі як культурної спадщини спонукає нас замислитися над питаннями розподілу благ та соціальних цінностей. Відвідувачам заборонено до будь-чого торкатися чи пересувати. Той факт, що будинок не використовується функціонально через його музейний статус, ще більше підживлює уяву. Постановочне відео представляє героїню у церемоніальній ролі. Їй дають можливість виголосити коротку промову всередині вілли, у якій вона порушує питання соціального статусу, форм соціальної нерівності та індивідуального досвіду перебування у просторах з іншими культурами та мовами.

Проєкт «Культурні держави — Exposition des arts et techniques appliquées à la vie moderne» запозичує підзаголовок у Всесвітньої виставки 1937 року, що проходила в Парижі під гаслом «Мистецтво й техніка в сучасному житті». Цей ярмарок став однією з найбільш вражаючих репрезентацій відносин між культурою та нацією: від конфронтації між нацистським та радянським павільйонами до демонстрації імперіалістичних культурних концепцій Франції та Британії у їхніх колоніальних павільйонах. Яким є відношення між політичними та культурними інститутами в Європі через 70 років після цієї ключової події? У зв’язку зі своєю зацікавленістю політикою простору Міністерство архітектури (МА) замовило дослідження та аналіз виробництва у сфері територіальної ергономії. Аналіз ґрунтується на багаторівневому принципі перекваліфікації простору, що продовжує впливати на всі сфери культури. Як намір курувати Всесвітню виставку на кшталт паризької 1937 року, проєкт «Культурні держави» присвячений зниклим державам Європейського півострова та досліджує державу як сконструйований (а отже, такий, що може бути деконструйований) рівень просторової репрезентації. Як мірило контролю, держава перешкоджає дотриманню територіальних звичаїв та накладає обмеження на культурні моделі. За допомогою графіки у «Культурних державах» аналізуються механізми, здатні виявити злоякісну залежність культурних конструктів від логіки держав. Суть цієї логіки у розширенні, збереженні та продовженні застосування державою всеохопної влади. Інструменталізація культурних форм — це лише частина цієї влади. Ця інструменталізація є головною темою «Культурних держав». На Київській бієнале Société Réaliste представлять добірку мап із корпусу «Культурних держав».

Aлo, Aлo! 2018 Одним із напрямків практики Карабіновича є аналіз моментів історії, коли голос влади зазнає поразки та втрачає свою артикуляцію. «Ало! Ало!» апелює до моменту втрати авторитарної влади. Епізод з румунської історії, коли Ніколае Чаушеску був відсторонений, зображається лише через об’єкт і документацію звуку, проте глядачі стають свідками потоку революційної хореографії, яка проглядається у фігурі диктатора, що згасає. З глибини чорної хутряної шапки ми чуємо голос Чаушеску: це фрагмент його останньої публічної промови. Хаотичне мовлення, перерваний вигук «Ало!», що перетворюється у нерозбірливе бурмотіння. Революційний гамір концентрується в паузах його промови і от-от вибухне. Єдине, що нагадує про колишню велич — це розкішна чорна хутряна шапка. Як і коли саме цей метафоричний капелюх спаде з влади?

Дякую, що керуєте нами 2020 «Коли я дивлюся на свою матір, на її завмерле від болю тіло внаслідок важких завдань, які вона виконувала протягом п’ятнадцяти років, стоячи на конвеєрі та прикручуючи кришки до скляних банок з одною десятихвилинною перервою на туалет вранці, а другою — в обід, мене не може не вражати, чим конкретно, на фізичному рівні, є соціальна нерівність», — пише про свою маму французький інтелектуал Дідьє Ерібон у мемуарах «Повернення в Реймс». На фотографіях Їржи Скали не видно облич, тож герої його робіт залишаються анонімними. Утім, це реальні люди, які заробляють на життя ручною працею. Як і Ерібона, Скалу цікавлять їхні тіла, особливо те, як на них впливає щоденна монотонна робота. Зображення на фотографіях розмиті й туманні, тому здаються примарними, наче уві сні. На виставці вони виглядають недоречними; зрештою, галереї зазвичай — місце для вищого середнього класу. У своїй роботі Скала тривалий час досліджує відношення між працею та соціально-економічним порядком. Насамперед його цікавить соціальний статус прекарної художньої роботи, яку він часто зіставляє з відношенням до мистецтва його батьків — колишніх робітників заводу.

Що таке Глобальний Схід і де його шукати? Переосмислюючи універсальне Лекція Яна Сови

Категорія Глобального Сходу нещодавно з’явилась в академічних колах як альтернатива уявленням про Східну Європу з точки зору її пострадянської спадщини. Вона також має на меті доповнити та ускладнити бінарний поділ на Глобальну Північ і Глобальний Південь. Цей концептуальний поворот, хоч і цікавий сам по собі, інтригує насамперед як симптом, що повертає нас до Реального, прихованого під символічними конструкціями та уявними репрезентаціями публічних дебатів. Це Реальне свідчить про той факт, що всупереч уявленням, які були поширені три десятиліття тому наприкінці Холодної війни, Східна Європа виявилась засадничо відмінною від Заходу і водночас не змогла легко вписатись у розподіл на Північ і Південь. З цієї причини у переважній більшості сучасних академічних і теоретичних проєктів Східною Європою нехтують, що підтверджується майже повною відсутністю інтересу до неї у полі західної, північної та південної постколоніальної теорії. З іншого боку, можливо, сама концепція Глобального Сходу просто створює черговий ідентитарний ярлик, що може в кращому випадку втішити деяких східноєвропейців, які почуваються знехтуваними історією, проте не є дієвим інструментом політичної боротьби поза ліберальним горизонтом визнання. Тож відштовхуючись від поняття Глобального Сходу, ми шукатимемо концептуалізації, яка дозволить нам схопити специфічність європейського Сходу та водночас створити спільний фронт політичної боротьби, що долатиме географічні межі регіону. Костюми в нашій країні не підходять для тропічного клімату Перформативна лекція Бартоша Фронцков’яка та Макса Цеґєльського

Ця перформативна лекція зіставляє два наративи, що базуються на дослідженнях, які Бієнале Варшава проводила в рамках тривалої мистецької та дослідницької програми, присвяченої відносинам між Центральною та Східною Європою і регіоном Близького Сходу та Північної Африки (БСПА). Перший, заснований на етнографічних інтерв’ю, які у 2018 і 2019 роках проводила Інґа Гайдаровіч (у співпраці з професоркою Беатою Ковальською), — це збірка історій палестинців та ліванців, котрі у 1970 – 80-х роках жили, навчалися і працювали у Польщі, а згодом з різних причин вирішили виїхати у Ліван. У їхніх розповідях спогади з часу польської політичної трансформації переплітаються з громадянською війною в Лівані. Ми чуємо їхні порівняння польського життя на початку 90-х із соціально-економічною реальністю Близького Сходу. Другий наратив відображає вражаюче архівне дослідження, що проводилося у співпраці з відомим репортером Максом Цеґєльським. На основі візуальних матеріалів та статей з таких журналів як The Polish Review (1962–1972), Polska, а також архівів Міхала Калецького та Польської школи розвитку, Міністерства закордонних справ, LOT, Orbis, Budimex, Polservice та інших міжнародних торгових компаній, ми розповідаємо про незвичайні соціальні ситуації, що відбувалися за лаштунками офіційної політики та торгівлі. Реалізм ХІХ століття починається із зображення праці; у ХХ столітті ця тема є ключовою для художників-соцреалістів, які творять під покровительством соціалістичної держави / держави загального добробуту чи протестують проти панівної ідеології. Художники-соцреалісти й фотографи, які працювали в жанрі соціальної документальної фотографії, звеличували трудівників і зображували їх як революційну силу, що рухає історію вперед. Трудове життя початку ХХІ століття є нестабільним і надзвичайно мінливим; нещодавно це додатково увиразнила пандемія COVID-19. Недивно, отже, що тема роботи знову посіла важливе місце у творчості сучасних художників. Багато з них зацікавилися реактуалізацією естетичних умовностей і формальних традицій реалізму. Навіть більше, чимало митців і мисткинь різними шляхами повертаються до принципово реалістичного зображення робітництва. Чи можна говорити про свідому взаємодію художників із реалістичними умовностями ХІХ і ХХ століть? Який вид праці, клас чи група перебувають в центрі уваги сучасного реалізму? дження з сучасністю є не відмова від неї на користь традиційних цінностей, а навпаки — присвоєння права називатися сучасним; однак з правом «суверена» вигадувати для неї саме те наповнення, яке відповідає бекґраунду та політичним інтересам відповідної владної еліти. Саме таким чином в останні десятиліття будувалася російська культурна політика. Мрії про братерство

Презентація дискусійної платформи за участі Асі Баздирєвої, Івана Мельничука, Лади Наконечної, Рамони Шахт, Уляни Биченкової, Юлії Костерєвої У радянській програмі міст-побратимів існувало розрізнення між «братерством» і «спорідненістю». Братання було можливим лише з містами соціалістичних республік. Мережа міст-побратимів включала в себе також нижчі за статусом споріднені міста. Прозір між «братерством» і «спорідненням» підсилював гармонійний образ побратимських відносин. Програма міст-побратимів органічно вписувалася в міф про «велику родину» братніх народів, який підживлював формальну подібність між цими містами. Після розпаду СРСР усі «споріднені» міста стали «братніми». У змінених реаліях була втрачена вибірковість братання, а з нею і близькість між містами-побратимами. Кількість братніх міст Києва зросла від трьох до декількох десятків, а поріднення між ними набуло характеру абстрактного подвоєння. Його культурна компонента перетворилася на рутину, яка урізноманітнює день чиновника муніципалітету. Звідки і куди це побратимство прямує в цьому архаїчному церемоніалі, важко зрозуміти. Чи може діалог між низовими ініціативами та самоорганізованими інституціями віднайти нові «спільні місця» в межах інфраструктури міст-побратимів? Презентація Марти Чіллеро, Берал Мадри, Катажини Герц та Маґдалени Сємашко «Простір процвітання» — це нова феміністична платформа, що об’єднує молодих художниць з усього світу, які створюють екологічні й постколоніальні наративи для Європи і не тільки. В рамках цієї публічної події учасниці «Простору процвітання» представлять новостворену платформу та обговорять найактуальніші феміністичні виклики на міжнародній арт-сцені. На події також буде представлено мистецький проєкт Катажини Герц і Маґдалени Сємашко (художниць із «Простору процвітання» та колективу Kultura Kresu) під назвою «Гібриди і люди / Вовчиця». У цьому проєкті колектив Kultura Kresu прагне виявити ланцюжки розмноження, гендеру та раси — що стає важливим не лише для людей, як нагадують нам екофеміністичні теоретики_ні, але й для тварин та елементів нашого довкілля. Вважається, що постсоціалістичні авторитарні режими всіляко перешкоджають публічній репрезентації сучасних культурних практик — забороняють виставки, переслідують художників, контролюють музейні та освітні програми, не допускають прокат фільмів та публікацію літературних творів. У такий спосіб вони начебто постають прибічниками традиційних цінностей. Утім, дедалі частіше доводиться переконуватися, що насправді все складніше. Метою вторгнення урядів у сучасні експериментальні практики аж ніяк не є запровадження традиційних цінностей. Цей експериментальний підхід був покликаний порвати з музичними конвенціями тональності, темпу, гармонії і деконструювати архітектуру сучасної американської та європейської музики. Комбінація жанрів, з якими працюють запрошені гурти, направлена проти жанру як такого — їхні композиції утворюють полігональний ритуал, що стає звуковим вираженням нередукованої складності сучасного світоустрою.

До питання про меморіальне виробництво в Югославії періоду соціалізму Розмова Беті Жеровц та Сані Хорватінчіч

Протягом принаймні останнього десятиліття увагу дослідників та широкої громадськості привертають монументи, що будувалися у колишній соціалістичній Югославії для вшанування подій, пов’язаних із Другою світовою війною. Цей інтерес проявляється на різних рівнях — від осіб, які «полюють» на забуті та занедбані руїни, місцевих та міжнародних художників, зосереджених у своїй роботі на темах пам’яті та політики, до оглядових виставок в елітних інституціях на кшталт МоМА. Втім, у контексті, з якого він походить, цей великий масив публічного мистецтва потрапив у пастку, з одного боку, політичної реструктурації, руйнування спадщини та історичного ревізіонізму, а з іншого — нестачі систематичного дослідження та ґрунтовного аналізу, що помістив би різні аспекти, важливі для його розуміння, у специфічні контексти їхнього виникнення. Під час розмови ми представимо питання, підходи та погляди, які охоплює наше видання про югославське меморіальне виробництво. Які монументальні практики та традиції передували розвитку публічного комеморативного мистецтва у період соціалізму? Хто замовляв ці пам’ятники, і як впливала югославська політика культури та пам’яті на їхнє виробництво? Ким були їхні автори і якими є формальні й типологічні характеристики цих меморіальних структур? Яким є їхнє порівняльне відношення до меморіального виробництва в Європі? Яким чином практики комеморації обмежували та спрямовували їхнє соціальне використання? Які виклики постають у зв’язку з популярною експлуатацією образів цієї спадщини? організації й застарілі інституції та режими на зразок національної держави чи демократії. Але їй під силу породити регіональним і навіть локальним спільнотам, націленим на виживання, зміни й ре-екзистенцію; вони могли б вступити у складні взаємовідносини й сформувати міцні коаліції, базовані на відмінностях, а не однаковості. Такі коаліції могли б засновуватися на забутих і знищених культурних, історичних, релігійних, мовних, космологічних, космотехнічних, геополітичних і корпополітичних зв’язках, які не обов’язково збігаються з унормованими модерними/колоніальними ідеологічними бінарностями й кордонами. Це не означає повернення до сконструйованої архаїчної традиції; радше, ідеться про дослідження того, як могли б розвиватися союзницькі стосунки й відносини співпраці, які модерність відкинула й оголосила небажаними, чим прирекла низку націй на існування в постійному напівпериферійному модусі наздоганяння інших. Перед тим, як нова політична уява й нова суб’єктність стануть колективним проєктом, на них чекає критична робота з пам’яттю, необхідна для того, щоб відновити майбутнє. Примітки до альтерглобалістської історії мистецтва Розмова Аґати Якубовської та Маґдалени Радомської

У своїй останній незавершеній книзі («Глобальний підхід до мистецтва Центрально-Східної Європи», буде видана Асоціацією культури та теорії ім. Іґора Цабеля у 2021 році) Пьотр Пьотровський запропонував переорієнтувати аналітичну парадигму в напрямку альтерглобалізму. Це, на думку дослідника, призведе до виникнення того, що він назвав альтерглобалістською історією мистецтва. В основі проєкту альтерглобалістської історії мистецтва — спроба визначити, у якому взаємозв’язку перебувають світова історія мистецтва й постколоніальні студії, а також — яким чином постколоніальні студії впливають на східноєвропейські художні периферії. У своєму виступі ми поговоримо про два можливі підходи до критичного розгляду й практичного втілення альтерглобалістської історії мистецтва. Маґдалена Радомська зосередиться на напружених стосунках альтерглобалістської історії мистецтва з марксизмом і відтак розгляне питання про можливий вихід за рамки постколоніальних студій — як з перспективи Пьотровського, так і з марксистської перспективи. Аґата Якубовська розповість про те, як можна переосмислити феміністичне мистецтво Східної Європи в глобальному контексті, якщо підважити панівну концептуальну структуру. Від зашкарублого ЄС дедалі більше віє втомою, а тим часом на його периферії виникає нова Європа. У цьому просторі за межами ЄС віє рвучкий вітер глобальних змін. В Албанії, Сирії, Туреччині, Україні й Мелільї стрімко постають нові устрої. Такі місця не лише створюють нові європейські альянси, а й підривають наративи про центр Європи. Конференція про майбутнє Європи — перша масштабна партиципативна ініціатива ЄС, яка передбачає безпосередню взаємодію з жителями Європи. Саме цим шляхом і має йти ЄС: мета Європи — об’єднання людей, а не інтеграція держав. Зі свого боку, Київська бієнале, присвячена темі союзництва, розглядає взаємозв’язки між мешканцями європейського Сходу. Бієнале також аналізує роль сучасних технологій, культури й мистецтва у формуванні політичних систем і суспільного ладу. Для постпандемійної Європи це питання безумовно є надважливим. Ми повинні пересвідчитися, що сучасні технології вписуються в європейську соціальну теорію, а не підточують її. Найдавніша, найблагородніша й найбільш всеосяжна концепція європейської соціальної теорії — концепція республіки. Епоха тривог: можливі шляхи до нової політичної уяви Лекція Мадіни Тлостанової

В умовах зростання нерівності, появи нових форм дегуманізації й знецінення людських життів більшість живих істот на нашій планеті відчувають сьогодні всеосяжне почуття тривоги. Тривога — екзистенційний стан, який парадоксальним чином об’єднує найбільш і найменш привілейованих; нею позначено не лише життя мігрантів і біженців, колишніх мешканців «другого світу», покинутих у порожнечі, але й численних істот, людських і не тільки, чиє життя руйнується під впливом кліматичних змін і, загальніше кажучи, того, що короткозоро називають антропоценом. Лейтмотив тривоги – це всепроникне хронофобне відчуття того, що майбутнє нищиться; це буквально «звихнута» темпоральність. Але в тривоги є не лише негативна сторона: вона також здатна відкрити нам нові перспективи й, найголовніше, стимулювати розвиток нової політичної уяви, яка уможливила б відновлення майбутнього. Після 1989 року Західна Європа пережила новий сплеск низових соціальних рухів. Упродовж 1990-х численні групи з різними світоглядами експериментували з можливими формами альянсів, що не передбачали уніфікації чи стирання відмінностей. Об’єднуючись у величезних транснаціональних протестах, вони представляли свої демонстрації як особливу форму спектаклю. Їхня ідея войовничого розмаїття виражалась через представлення множинності естетик, кожна з яких відповідала окремому колективу. Ця концепція зустрічі зрештою втілилась у метафорі карнавалу. Вбачаючи в цьому засадничий момент західного активізму, лекторка розглядає естетичні форми так званого антиглобалізаційного руху та досліджує політичну роль його перформативних і символічних форм. Також вона прочитує це розмаїття творчих процесів крізь лінзу утопії. У своєму найпоширенішому розумінні утопія зазвичай позначає своєрідний перепочинок від потрясінь і ризиків політичної боротьби, винайдення суспільства, в якому немає потреби у конфронтації. Однак у цих соціальних рухах омріяний світ включається в саму боротьбу та стає зброєю в конфлікті. Таким чином, ми можемо говорити про «утопії повстання». У 2020 році білоруси пробудилися до політичного життя, і з політичного забуття повернулося два ключових слова — революція та солідарність. Повставши проти авторитарного режиму, білоруський народ зробив величезний крок від інтерпасивності до спільної справи, від негативної колективності до відчуття істинної спільноти, від соціальної атомізації до нових практик солідарності та колективної дії заради спільної мети — свободи й демократії. Білоруська революція ще не скінчилась, кризу не подолано, тривають репресії проти звичайних людей і громадянського суспільства, а авторитарний режим досі тримається за владу із безпрецедентним застосуванням фізичного й символічного насильства. Але досвід солідарності, що проявився і продовжує існувати в різних формах, вже створив умови для нового політичного майбутнього. Альміра Усманова у своєму виступі розгляне два взаємопов’язаних питання: по-перше, як теоретичний аналіз самої концепції «солідарності» та її політичної історії у ХХ столітті може допомогти нам зрозуміти підґрунтя, особливості й форми солідарності серед білорусів у 2020 році; по-друге, яку роль грали візуально опосередковані прояви солідарності у публічному просторі для масового залучення білорусів у протестний рух. Друге питання особливо важливе, бо не лише включає аналіз того, чому візуальні образи можуть ставати каталізаторами соціальних змін, а й дає змогу побачити, як візуалізуються й комунікуються абстрактні концепції солідарності, відчуття спільноти та множинності. Цього року на Київській бієнале брати Квінсі та Йорґен Ґаріо розкажуть історію опору. Використовуючи музику й поезію, вони говоритимуть про виживання наперекір усьому. В їхньому перформансі «пост-» перетворюється із суто теоретичної концепції на послання солідарності. Брати Ґаріо осмислюють повстання рабів, трудові страйки та боротьбу за незалежність у Карибському регіоні й проводять аналогії з Україною та постсоціалізмом, звертаючись при цьому до музичних традицій каліпсо, соки, реґі, тамбу й гри на сталевих барабанах – жанрів, у яких політична позиція висловлюється через натяки й прихований гумор. Перформанс, породжений умовами постійного стеження, що зумовило потребу в закодованій мові чи навіть винайденні нових мов, набуде тривкої форми й стане аудіотвором, доступним відвідувачам бієнальної виставки. Концептуальні засади Київської бієнале 2021 «С о ю з н и к и» стосуються феноменів (де)колоніалізму, авторитаризму та політики пам’яті в умовах постсоціалістичного капіталізму на сході Європи. Бієнале пропонує критичний погляд на поняття (напів)периферії та її традиційну геополітичну й культурну відмежованість від метрополій з перспективи транснаціональної історії Східної Європи. Цьогорічний форум також спрямований на картографування авторитарного ландшафту регіону шляхом вивчення його політичної генеалогії, сформованої екстенсивним видобутком природних ресурсів, новим колоніалізмом даних та капіталізмом стеження. Аналіз сучасних авторитарних тенденцій пов’язаний з дослідженням ідеологічно мотивованої політики пам’яті, що визначає історичний образ Східної Європи після падіння Берлінського муру, а також недавніх революційних трансформацій та військових конфліктів, що перевизначили пострадянський простір через тридцять років після розпаду СРСР. Київська бієнале 2021 «С о ю з н и к и» — це четвертий міжнародний форум мистецтва, знання і політики, що інтегрує виставки й дискусійні платформи, організований Центром візуальної культури. Як спільний кураторський проєкт Альянсу східноєвропейських бієнале, цьогорічний форум представить тематичне продовження та концептуальний розвиток міжінституційної співпраці між учасниками Альянсу — Бієнале Matter of Art у Празі, Бієнале Варшава, Київською бієнале, OFF-Бієнале в Будапешті та фестивалем Survival Kit у Ризі. Альянс східноєвропейських бієнале був створений у 2019 році, щоб запропонувати нові форми міжнародної солідарності, розширюючи суспільно-політичну уяву та альтернативні культурні підходи. Поєднуючи естетику та політику, Альянс вибудовує інший наратив східноєвропейського регіону й перевизначає існуючі способи співпраці культурних інституцій.

Союзники – Київська бієнале 2021 На тлі турбулентної пандемії COVID-19, смертоносного відголосу війни з терором та дедалі більшого тиску неофеодального корпоративізму сучасних комунікаційних технологій наявні глобальні та регіональні геополітичні альянси зазнали значних перетворень. Колишні владні консенсуси та міжнародні договори розпалися, правий популізм та ведення війни стали звичними замінниками національної політики, а фортифікація кордонів та криміналізація міграції, підсилені пандемічними обмеженнями, сьогодні опинилися в самому центрі політичного мейнстриму. Остаточний крах гуманітарного мілітаризму знаменує сутінки неоліберальної епохи, а нова світова політична модель поступово набуває обрисів авторитарного капіталізму. Як сьогодні, в умовах посилення репресивних апаратів національних держав та росту ізоляціонізму й автократичних форм правління у всьому світі, можна створювати і реалізовувати нові міжнародні альянси? Київська бієнале 2021 «С о ю з н и к и», курована Альянсом східноєвропейських бієнале, прагне дослідити різні історичні форми та сучасні приклади культурних і політичних союзів у Східній Європі та за її межами, а також їхню здатність створювати нові соціальні формати. Серія мистецьких проєктів та публічна програма бієнале присвячені, зокрема, сучасним умовам, політичним чинникам та інституціям, що сприяють створенню нових альянсів у ХХІ столітті. Переймаючись найнагальнішими проблемами сучасності, що зумовили нинішні військові конфлікти у Східній Європі та на Близькому Сході, Київська бієнале 2021 поєднує кураторські підходи партнерських інституцій з Праги, Варшави, Будапешту та Риги, щоб створити модель міжінституційного альянсу для багатосторонньої діяльності в регіоні у вигляді стійкої мережі співпраці та простору підтримки, яких сьогодні так не вистачає у політичному полі.
