THEYEARINREVIEW FROM THE DIRECTOR
DearFriends:
Despite the hardships that extreme drought brought to Samburu in 2022, I am happy to report that The Samburu Project continued to see growth in our community programs as wecelebratedthe"YearoftheGirl."
Early in the year, we launched a partnership with The Thorn Tree Project to sponsor the educationalfeesforfiveprimaryschoolstudents, givingthemextrasupporttonavigatethe transition from village to classroom. We also continued to support previous scholarship recipient Zeitun Doraso. After she graduated in the spring and secured a spot at the Wamba Nursing School, we worked with Spanish charity Africa Digna to ensure she could continuetoaffordhernewschoolfees.
In May, we brought together over 1,200 girls at Ewaso Girls Secondary School in Archer's Post to celebrate Menstrual Health Day. The event included inspirational speeches from local female leaders, a workshop by PadMad founder Madhvi Dalal, and the distribution of reusablemenstrualproducts, soapandunderwear.Weevenmadethenationalnews!
Throughout the summer, we conducted a pilot program for the Journalism Club at Wamba Girls Secondary School, distributed food to over 500 households, and conducted a Samburu Sisters Workshop for the women of Ntemparani Village. Finally, in December, you helped us fund a dormitory for Nkaroni Girls Secondary School. The building opened this summertomuchsinginganddancing.

THEYEARINREVIEW
In 2022, The Samburu Project funded the drilling and installation of 9 new wells in the Samburu region of Kenya, providing nearly 10,000 people with life-changing access to clean, safe water. We once again engaged the services of Kariuki Wambugu of Ground Water Max Ltd, to conduct our hydrogeology surveys and determine the best sitesfor drilling. After the siteswere identified

AquaMax, Ltd of Nairobi was contracted to drill the new boreholes Three people from each community were elected to a well committee and trained by our well maintenance staff. In addition to helping mobilize the community to help with well drill, they ensure the well is properly maintained. Finally, a Hygiene and Sanitation workshop was conducted by a county health representative to ensurethecleanwaterstaysclean!

You raised almost $50,000 to aid us in the construction of a new dormitory and outfitteditwithbeds, linens, sheets, and pillows to further support these young students.
GIVINGWOMENTHETIMETOLEARN WATERISEMPOWERMENT
In December, the TSP team conducted our eleventh Samburu Sisters Workshop at Ntaparani Village Since we first drilled a well at Ntaparani in 2021, the women of this community have been actively requesting more programming on literacy, empowerment, micro-finance, poultry keeping, and more. We were happy we were able to conduct this two day workshop to inform women about HIV/AIDS, women’s rights under the Kenyan law, harmful cultural practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM), beading, the risks of early marriage, and the importance of educating their children. We hope that in the future we will be able to build on this foundationbyfacilitatingothereducationalopportunitiesfortheNtaparaniwomen!
