Dear Friends:
With the pandemic clearly in our rearview, 2023 put TSP back in the fast lane.
Early in the year, a man from Turkey traveled to Samburu with a dream of riding a camel and was transformed into an angel donor, enabling us to construct our most ambitious project to date Together with our friends at Sasaab Lodge and Davis & Shirtliff, we completed our first solar powered well allowing the people of Konyek to enjoy clean water for the first time in generations
We secured our first Kenyan financial partner in Kapa Oil who, after donating soap to our menstrual hygiene event for 5 years, sponsored the drilling of a new well at Sulubei Village
Over the summer, I spent two months in Kenya. I visited new well communities, met partners, and explored new projects I even danced with 1,500 girls and Samburu pop star Laiso Boy at our monumental menstrual hygiene event. Experiencing life changing moments alongside the communities we serve is the highlight of my job
Here in the US, our team was selected to attend the United Nations 2023 Water Conference in NYC As a small nonprofit, having the opportunity to represent an indigenous population and collaborate with big name players in the water industry was incredible.
We accomplished all of this while continuing to grow our existing programs: drilling 10 new wells, repairing 33 water projects, conducting 3 Samburu Sisters workshops, sponsoring 7 students’ education, and bringing Splash Bash back to Los Angeles, and sharing stories from Samburu with all our supporters.
To all our friends who continue to aid our efforts in this small, beautiful part of the world, thank you. We could not do this work without each and every one of you.
With gratitude,
Linda Hooper, Executive Director
In 2023, The Samburu Project funded the drilling and installation of 9 new wells in the Samburu region of Kenya, providing nearly 8,000 people with life-changing access to clean, safe water We once again engaged the services of Kariuki Wambugu of Ground Water Max Ltd, to conduct our hydrogeology surveys and determine the best sites for drilling. After the sites were identified, OSB Africa was contractedtodrilltheboreholes, capthewells, andbuildtheanimaltroughs

Three people from each community were elected to a well committee and trained by our well maintenance staff. In addition to helping mobilize the community to help with well drill, they serve as the main point of contact to ensure the well is properly maintained Finally, a Hygiene and Sanitation workshop was conducted by a county health representative to ensurethecleanwaterstaysclean!
In May, The Samburu Project and PadMad Kenya set off for Wamba to host a Menstrual Hygiene Day event celebrating the power of periods Thanks to the support of AirKenya, Kapa Oil Refineries, Family Bank, and our amazing donors, we were able to raise over $20,000 to facilitate a workshop for 1,441 girls from 12 differentlocalschools.TheeventclosedwithaperformancebyKenyapopstarLaiso Boy! In addition to the school event, our Kenya team travelled to the remote village of Tintil, where we drilled a well in 2018. There, we facilitated a workshop for 75 women, many of whom had little to no education on menstrual hygiene and reproductivehealth Wedistributedunderwear, soap, andreusablepads
With access to clean water, more students can attend school. That is why, in 2023, we continued our partnership with The Thorn Tree Project, sponsoring the education of five secondary school students We also partnered with Africa Digna to sponsor previous TSP scholarship recipient, Zeitun Deraso’s nursing school fees and worked with The Heartsteps Foundation to support TSP Intern Sandra Lelemoyog’s University education Finally, to continue to support schools in Samburu, we installed a new water point at Seiya Boys School and funded the expansionoftheboreholeatNkaroniGirlsSecondarySchool!
In 2023, the TSP team conducted three Samburu Sisters Workshops. The first was held for Leminjiria Village in April and the second two were held for the members of Nairisha and Sionta Villages in December Each workshop was two days and aimed to inform women about HIV/AIDS, women’s rights under the Kenyan law, the dangers of cultural practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM) and beading, the downsides of early marriage, and the importance of educating their children In total,theprogramsreached198womenand75men.
In June, we began drilling a deep well at Konyek Village. Shortly after the well was solarized, and a kiosk installed, the women asked if we could help them start a garden TSP staff worked with Francis Leshakwet from the Department of Agriculture to facilitate a workshop for the women of Konyek. Today, the garden is thriving, providing much needed nutrition and income for the community. We also focused our 2023 Giving Tuesday campaign on agricultural growth in Samburu schools.Thankstoouramazingglobalcommunity,weraisedover$20,000tolaunch small gardens at three of our partner schools and mend the fence of the garden at oolpartners
In 2023 we kicked off our Kids Helping Kids campaign, partnering with Woodside, Seely, and Christ Schools to teach students about the importance of clean water In March, we returned to Woodside, CA for our annual Hike for Water at Runnymede Farmwhereguestsjoinedusforadayfilledwithart, tacos, andcleanwater.Laterin the year, on #GivingTuesday, we invited our Los Angeles community to join us at Helms Bakery District to toast the season of giving at our 2023 holiday party The eventincludedwine, art, andabeautifulKenyanmarketplace.
In October, we were thrilled to invite supporters to once again join us in person for Splash Bash 2023 The night kicked off with a garden lit happy hour, as our guests enjoyed shopping at our Kenyan market and perusing the silent auction African drumming led guests from the courtyard to the dining room and where we premiere our three-part movie, “A Water Story.” Impassioned speeches were deliveredbytheTSPBoard, remindingtheroomofthetransformativeimpactofour work. The evening concluded with our Fund-a-Need, where paddle after paddle raised in support of clean water, ultimately funding three new wells in Samburu. Altogether,youhelpedusraiseanincredible$230,000forcleanwater
Throughout the year, several donors launched #DoitForWater campaigns to raise funds for The Samburu Project On April 1, Mamen Saura and Calvin Darling hosted a day of yoga in Palo Alto, CA In May, TSP Board member Simon Wasserberger hosted a concert with the Water of Love band in New York City. In June, Sydney Maimon donated her bat mitzvah, and raised funds selling home-made bracelets. In the fall, the Sotua Odede yoga group raised over $55,000 to drill a solar powered well, and, in December, the Allen family held a bake sale and sold bracelets to raise over$24,000tofundanewwellinSamburu!
