Fire Prevention Month

I

n 1922, the National Fire Protection Association named the second week of October Fire Prevention Week (6–12) and the entire month of October. The goal is to raise awareness about fire safety and help ensure your home and family is prepared in the event of an emergency. In the early evening of October 18, a fire broke out in an abandoned truck on Willow Street, Mystic and the Hoxie Fire Department quickly responded and stopped the fire from spreading. Meet some of Hoxie’s finest firefighters in action including Chief Fritz Herbert on page 11.

Norwich Area Veterans Council conducted a 75th Anniversary Memorial Program in memory of the two Ensigns at the Preston Public Library on Saturday, October 19. The honor was open to the public and a U.S. Navy performed a flyover of three F-18s with a missing man formation during the program. Join in on page 11.

Six soldiers from the 256th Engineer Detachment, East Lyme returned home after a nine-month deployment to Romania. Maj. General Francis Evon, Adjutant General, welcomed home the National Guardsmen on page 6.

Sullivan VFW Post 2212 Taftville will recall the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, with a ceremony commemorating the 101st Anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. Local citizens, civic groups and veterans are urged to gather at Memorial Park on the corner of South Second Ave. and South B St. in Taftville to honor and recognize the service of veterans from the area who have served to ensure the freedom of this great nation. Guests should be in place early as the ceremony will start promptly at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 11.

Guest speakers will be the Honorable Peter Nystrom, Mayor of Norwich. He will be followed by Commander Eric McDermott, U.S. Naval Reserves, who was called to active duty for a year, and deployed to the Republic of Djibouti, Africa, where he was responsible for Task

Group 68-6. He is best known to those of us in Norwich as Electric Operations Integrity Manager for Norwich Public Utilities.

Commander McDermott will share his personal experience of leaving his young family, and the profession he loves in serving the families of Norwich while answering the call of duty to his country.

The risks of duty that would lie ahead were unknown, and how he would later transition back to his civilian career was of equal concern as well. It is a story worthy of being shared with us all.

In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony location will be moved to American Legion Post 104, located at 22 Merchants Avenue, Taftville. The change in venue will be announced on the radio stations of Hall Communications, Inc. on the morning of the event. ix soldiers assigned to the 256th Engineer Detachment, based out of East Lyme are back in Connecticut following a ninemonth deployment to Romania.

The unit was deployed in December 2018 in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel with the mission of providing airfield structural firefighting and emergency response services.

Senior military leaders from the Connecticut National Guard were at Bradley International Airport to greet the soldiers. “ I’m p r ou d t o welc ome home the soldiers of the 256th,” said Maj. Gen. Francis J. Evon, Adjutant General of the Connecticut National Guard. “We are glad to have them reunited with their families and thank them as they are an integral part of their soldiers’ success. These soldiers performed their mission admirably and should be proud of all they’ve accomplished over the past nine months in support of our federal mission.”

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont also shared a few words to welcome home these soldiers. “ T he 256th spent ma ny months away from their families and loved ones in support of this

Operation Freedom’s Sentinel is part of the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission which began in January 2015. The mission is focused on working with foreign allies and partners to continue counterterrorism operations against Al-Qaeda and working by, with, and through the Afghan Security Forces to build and maintain

stability throughout the region.

The Connecticut National Guard is a unique dual-status agency, having both federal and state missions. The federal mission is to maintain properly trained and equipped National Guard u nits for prompt federalization in the event of war, domestic emergencies or other emergencies. The state mission is to coordinate, support and augment federal, state and local authorities in emergency response, to provide emergency response planning and to conduct community service programs.

Opening Ceremony Vets Rock 2019 will begin with an opening ceremony hosted

The 5th annual Vets Rock event benefitting veterans and active duty military will take place in the Earth Expo & Convention Center. during the National Anthem and a performance by the Voices of the Sun choir.

Vets Rock Expo From 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM, guests are invited to partake in the free Vets Rock Expo in the Earth Expo & Convention Center. The expo features over 50 veteran services organizations and a career fair presented by Hiring Our Heroes. Save-A-Suit, presented by Bozzuto’s, will also be on-hand, outfitting up to 150 veterans with professional attire.

Agent Orange Bill Endorsement

C

ongressman Joe C o u r t n e y ( C T- 0 2 ) an nounced that the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) organization has endorsed his bill, the bipartisan Agent Orange Exposure Fairness Act (H.R. 566). The Agent Orange Exposure Fairness Act wou ld re move bu rde n some manifestation requirements from certain diseases that the VA has linked to Agent Orange exposure.

Rep. Courtney first introduced the bill in July 2018 after working with Gerry Wright, a Vietnam veteran from Andover who has raised awareness on Agent Orange exposure throughout the country, and has gathered thousands of signatures in support of making changes to these requirements.

Rep. Courtney reintroduced the Agent Orange Exposure Fairness Act in January, at the outset of the 116th Congress – it was the first bill he introduced to this Congress as a member of the new majority.

Since then, the list of bipartisan co-sponsors for H.R. 566 has more than doubled in size. Today’s announcement of support from the VVA represents the third National Veterans’ Service Organization

Chef Pépin and his family attended the event, along with hundreds of friends, fans, and well-wishers. The event included the unveiling of a bronze bust of Chef Pépin, installed next to the Yellow Farmhouse Education Center and created by worldr e n ow n e d s c u l p t o r Z e n o s Frudakis.

“I am delighted to be here and also flabbergasted,” Chef Pépin said. About the bust itself, he quipped that he was “jealous of him because he will be here long after I’m dead!”

On a serious note, Chef Pépin said, “I have been very lucky.

I’ve been in the kitchen 70 years this year. I left home, which was a restaurant, in 1949, and came to the U.S. in 1959 after my apprenticeship.”

The restaurant to which Chef Pépin referred was Le Pélican in Bourg-en-Bresse, owned by his parents, where he began to develop his love for food and cooking. His apprenticeship was in Paris; young Jacques also joined the military and worked as the personal chef to Charles de Gaulle and other heads of state.

Works Begins on Iconic Lighthouse and Museum The f loors will be refinished, and new elect r ical wi r i ng will be i nst alled.

Visitors to the restored lighthouse next year will see several new exhibits.

Stonington Historical Society Board President Michael Schefers said the renewal of the lighthouse will help guarantee this important piece of local history will have a future.

“It’s time to undertake the rebuilding of the lighthouse to ensure it enjoys a long life,” said Schefers.

To facilitate these upg rades, all artifacts and collections currently within the Lighthouse Museum will be moved offsite. That work was scheduled to

he Stonington Historical Society is thrilled to announce that restoration work at the Old Lighthouse Museum began in October, and in celebration of this milestone, a groundbreaking event was held at the museum at on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Much of the work at the site will t a ke pl a c e w i t h i n t h e l ig h t h o u s e building and is scheduled to conclude in the spring of 2020, at which time the museum will reopen to the public.

The work includes installing an HVAC system to create a climate-controlled envi ron ment to bet ter preser ve the ar tifacts displayed there. Str uct ural damage caused by insects and water inf ilt ration will also be add ressed.

Restoration work at the Old Lighthouse Museum began in October. conclude in mid October.

Several state and local officials were in attendance for the groundbreaking, along

with donors to the project, and members of the Stonington Historical Society Board of Directors. Annually, the lighthouse draws some 6,000 visitors during the spring, summer and early fall when it is open for tours.

The lighthouse was built in 1840 and purchased in 1925 by the Stonington Historical Society for use as a museum. It was the very first lighthouse in America to be converted to a museum and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Oudens Ello Architecture, a Bostonbased firm, is working with the Stonington Historical Society to design the project.

On-site construction is managed by the Consigli company.

Tons of Trash Removed

A

n estimated 3,500 volunteers gathered at more than 125 locations along the Connecticut River and tributary streams in NH, VT, MA, and CT for Connecticut River Conservancy’s (CRC) 23rd annual Source to Sea Cleanup. Volunteers with work gloves and trash bags got dirty and some got wet in their effort to remove nearly 50 tons of trash from in and along our rivers.

This massive effort for cleaner rivers included nearly 40 groups from the Connecticut region of the four-state Connecticut River basin. Groups included local river and conservation groups; elementary, high school, and college students; Girl and Boy Scouts; and many employee volunteer groups from local businesses.

Notably, CRC worked with The Metropol itan District ( M DC), Great Meadows Conservation Trust, and many com mu n it y g roups — nea rly 100 volunteers in total—to fill a dumpster with trash from Wethersfield Cove, including an abandoned dock. Much of the trash lands in the Cove from nearby Interstate-91 highway due to lit ter f rom vehicles, improperly secured loads on large trucks, and even from car wrecks.

Now, focus shifts to preventing trash in the first place. “Source to Sea Cleanup volunteers’ hard work and dedication is inspiring and makes a real difference for our rivers,” says Andrew Fisk,

In the early evening on Friday, October 18, a fire broke out in an abandoned truck on Willow Street, Mystic, close to the park. The Hoxie Fire Department quickly showed up and stopped the fire from spreading. Above Capt. Jeff Chandler forces the door open as Riley Middleton operates the hose. At the far left, Kyle Smith and Fire Chief Fritz Herbert look on at the progress. Firechief Hilbert said that the cause was accidental but undetermined as to what failed. The fuel tank, which was full (about 25 gallons) ruptured and the gasoline was the bulk of the fire. The storm drains nearby had to be dammed to prevent runoff from entering the storm drain. Both Mystic Fire Dept Companies responded—the Mystic Hook and Ladder and the B. F. Hoxie Engine Company. The fire was extinguished in approximately 10 minutes and the Fire Dept. remained on scene until CT DEEP arrived to clean up runoff and prevent it from reaching a waterway.

Put Fall Leaves to Work in Your Landscape photo & story

by Melinda Myers aking fall leaves can seem like a chore and a neverending one, at that. Reduce time and effort spent managing fall leaves by putting this valuable resource to work in your landscape.

Use your mower to recycle leaves right where they fall.

As you mow the grass, you’ll shred the leaves into smaller pieces. If they are the size of a quarter or smaller, your lawn will be fine. As these leaf pieces decompose, they add organic matter and nutrients to the soil.

Another option is to attach a bagger to shred and collect the leaves with every pass of the mower. Only use grass clippings collected from lawns that have not been treated with a weed killer this fall. Or burn a few extra calories and rake the leaves into a pile.

Bag shredded leaves you want to save for next season.

Tuck them out of sight for winter under trees or around the foundation of your house for added insulation.

Shred and collect fall leaves with every pass of the mower.

Then place a layer in flower beds to insulate perennial plant roots, conserve moisture, suppress weeds and improve the soil as it breaks down.

Dig extra shredded leaves into vacant annual flower and vegetable gardens or incorporate them into the soil as you prepare new planting beds. They will break down over winter, improving the drainage in heavy clay soils and the water-holding ability in fast-draining soils.

Create compost with shredded leaves and other landscape trimmings. Do not use meat, bones or dairy that can attract rodents. Avoid diseased, insect-infested trimmings and weeds that can survive in compost piles that don’t produce enough heat to kill these unwanted pests.Start with a compost pile that’s at least three feet high and wide for efficient decomposition. Place a mixture of shredded fall leaves, grass clippings free of herbicides, vegetable scraps and other landscape trimmings in an 8to 10-inch layer. Cover with compost and sprinkle with a low nitrogen, slow release fertilizer.

As you begin putting fall leaves to work in your landscape, you’ll start considering them a gift as you see the results of your efforts – a more beautiful landscape.

Providing Thanksgiving Meals

Liberty Bank and over 40 local Rotary Clubs plus the East Haddam Community Lions Club are teaming up to make sure that everyone can enjoy a bountiful Thanksgiving meal.

A

s the Thank sg iv i ng hol id ay approa ches, many Connect icut families will need food assistance to serve a traditional holiday feast. Liberty Bank and over 40 local Rotary Clubs plus the East Haddam Community Lions Club are teaming up to make sure that everyone in central, eastern, and shoreline Connecticut can enjoy a bountiful Thanksgiving meal.

From now until November 23, Liberty’s 60 branch offices will accept donations to local Rotary Clubs for the purpose of providing T h a n k sg iv i n g fo o d . ( T h i s includes the bank’s new locations

in Avon, Bloomfield, Granby, Simsbury, and West Hartford.)

Every dollar donated at a Liberty office will be matched with 25 cents from the Liberty Bank Foundation. On November 25, the Rotary Clubs will withdraw the funds and either purchase and deliver food for local needy families, or donate the funds to a local human services agency that provides Thanksgiving food.

Since it began in 2004, the Liberty Bank /Rotary Club Thanksgiving Dinner Drive has raised over $2.5 million to supply holiday meals to residents of the towns served by the bank.

Last year’s drive raised a record

$426,607. More than $88,000 of that total came from matching funds from the Liberty Bank Foundation. This year, the total fundraising goal is $450,000.

“Food insecurity affects one in six children in Connecticut. Our goal is to make sure they and their families can enjoy the traditional Thanksgiving feast this year,” said Sue Murphy, executive director of the Liberty Bank Foundation. Each Liberty Bank office will collect contributions for its local Rotary.

The Liberty Bank /Rotary Club T ha n k sg iv i ng Di n ner Drive was first conceived by the Middletown Rotary; then in 2004, Liberty Bank partnered with other Rotaries to expand it to the bank’s entire service area.

Since its inception in 1997, the Liberty Bank Foundation has awarded over $12 million in grants to nonprofit organizations.

It seeks to improve the quality of life for people of low or moderate income by investing in: education to promote economic success; affordable housing; and nonprofit capacity building.

The FDA ultimately approves only 12 percent of experimental medicines that enter clinical trials. It took 242 unsuccessful attempts between 1998 and 2014 to create just 13 drugs to treat

brain cancer and lung cancer.

But st ronger intellect ual property protections, like those in the USMCA, would encourage future investment in biologics, spurring new research, clinical trials, and even first-in-class cures. These safeguards give them a chance to earn back their upfront costs and earn a return should their biologic product make it to market.

Specif ically, the USMCA expands regulator y data protection. Right now, the U.S. offers 12 years of regulatory data protection for biologic drugs.

During this time, competitors can't access innovators' lab or clinical trial data. This means rival firms can't get a head start on manufacturing knockoffs, which gives innovators a better chance of recouping their upfront research costs.

Canada offers innovators just eight years of regulatory data protection. Mexico, meanwhile, has no data protection laws for biologics on the books. Therefore, the USMCA would raise Canada's and Mexico's protections closer to U.S. standards by requiring both nations offer drug makers a full decade of regulatory data protection for biologics. But the current 12-year standard would remain the same for the United States.

Put simply: The new trade deal won't impact U.S. dr ug pr ices at all. T he USMCA could ultimately spur medical breakthroughs, and in doing so, spare thousands of families from the pain of watching loved ones suffer from an incurable disease.

Hershey, was “doing research on Milton Hershey [1857-1945], taking arduous notes, and then putting everything together to make an interesting book for children and adults to read and enjoy.” Clearly, her hard work paid off: Chocolate and the Children is an unqualified success!

A retired elementary school teacher who lives York, PA, Judy says she has had “20 books published, as well as 9 children’s plays and over 300 magazine articles, short stories and poems.

“Eight years ago I formed a reader’s theatre troupe in York,” she explained, “and we perform at a variety of venues, including senior centers, churches, schools and for private affairs. Performing is my second love, after writing, which is why I love being in my Reader’s Theatre troupe.”

Hershey, and how he became the wealthy man of the Hershey Chocolate Company. “You could say I am a ‘chocoholic,’” who is “someone who has always loved chocolate. I am especially fond of Hershey’s chocolate” and “Milton’s childhood and background intrigued me. I was amazed at how he never wavered from his desire to make the best chocolate in the world.”

Especially relevant for our times Is the message Judy’s book delivers, which is “it’s not how you were raised, or how much wealth you came from, but rather [how] important it is to have a goal and work hard to reach that goal. Never lose sight of your goal, no matter how many obstacles get in your way.” (On a personal level, she says that as she was writing her book “I learned— through Milton’s experience—not to give up when writing became tiresome or difficult.”)

— Judy Wolfman One of the most telling pieces of information about Milton is found in the “Chocolate, Only Chocolate” chapter. T hat’s where we lear n because his chocolate business had become so successf ul, Judy w r ites, he “knew he’d have to build a bigger factory.” And he did! “He bought more than 1,000 acres of a cornfield,” Judy continues, “and in 1903 broke ground for the new factory.”

Milton went on to build “a community, with houses for his workers, schools, stores, banks, and everything a town needed, including trolley lines for his workers and visitors….”

A contest was held to name the new town, and the winning name was Hersheykoko but “the government didn’t approve,” Judy w r ites, “so it became Hershey.” This is just a sampling of what he did for Hershey: “[He] developed a trolley system that connected the new town to close communities and provided inexpensive transportation for the workers.” Also “Milton added an amusement park, golf courses, zoo, dancing pavilion, outdoor theater, and railroad station to his town.”

veryday life was often depicted in paintings or f ig u r i ne s i n t he days when photographs were unknown. Familiar workers like firemen, soldiers, farmers or royalty were made from porcelain or metal.

Several important factories, includi ng the Royal Worcester company of England, Royal D u x , Z s o l n a y, Gold scheider, Hummel, Lladro and KPM, made wat e r- c a r r ie r f igures of porcelain. Others created bronze figures. They must have had a very important, very familiar job to have been subjects for so many makers.

Most people today do not

realize that the water carrier was an important person. Water had to be scooped from a well, then walked to the center of the city or perhaps carried in a cart, where it was ladled into containers held by cu stome r s. T he re were no wells or piped-in water supplies.

The figures were very similar — usually a pair, a man and a woman, each holding a pouring jug and a large container of water. They were wearing the common clothes of the country. The woman often carried the water bottle on her head. Each figure was 10 to 15 inches tall, most glazed in appropriate colors.

Dressing Up Pooch for Halloween DEAR PAWS: My 2-yearold pooch "Sookie" and I have been invited to three separate Halloween-themed play dates, plus we are walking in a doggy parade to raise funds for the local shelter. Naturally, costumes are expected at all these events.

Problem is, Sookie cannot stand to wear anything heavier than a doggie jumper. What kind of costume would work for this type of dog? — Geraldine, via email DE A R F RUST R AT E D: Halloween-themed play dates with costumes are pretty much for the guests' entertainment— the dogs could care less. They just

want to socialize with the other dogs. Wearing a costume that your dog is clearly uncomfortable in is no fun for Sookie.

Look for practical costuming ideas that Sookie won't notice. If she is OK with doggie sweaters, how about a sweater with a superhero emblem printed on it? What about a Halloween-themed bandanna, if she's comfortable wearing one?

A decorated collar or leash also is fine. If you don't want to design the costume yourself, pet stores stock a range of ready-made costumes, or you can order one online. Order four, if you want her to wear a different outfit to each party.

You don't have to go all out, even if the Instagram photos of elaborately costumed pups tempt you to do so. Put Sookie's comfort and safety first.

If you really want her to walk into the parties wearing some creative headgear, try it out at home first. If Sookie can wear a tiara or devil horns for a few minutes without discomfort, you can take it off after showing her to the other guests. If she shakes the headgear off, whines or otherwise seems distressed, don't use it.

A Novel of Two Worlds

W

by Roger Zotti hile w r iting his latest book, the hugely imaginative, masterfully written A Boomer’s Tale (Cros s Dove), Darr yl Nyznyk learned two things. First, he said, “Aging doesn’t make one old. Only loss of dreams and creativity can do that.” Second: “Life’s ultimate truth is there is no need to seek adventure and romance elsewhere. A life welllived in devotion to people and issues beyond our selfish needs creates the fantastic. All we have to do is to open [our] hearts and minds to the real wonder of the world in which we live.”

His novel, he said, “Is the story of Jack Darrow, lawyer, husband, and father, who longs for the passions and adventure of youth over his life’s mundane realities. On a camping trip to

find himself, Jack is abducted by murderous vagrants. His escape through a mysterious cave thrusts him into a medieval world of Trogs, Dark Riders, masochistic rulers, and the arms of a strong-willed gypsy beauty.

Torn between devotion to the family he left behind and the youthful passion of newfound love, Jack struggles to find his life’s truth, hoping against all hope he is not too late.”

Because he relishes using his imagination, Darryl explained, he had no problem “leaving the present moment to daydream about the mysteries of other worlds, fantastic adventures, and romance: I had no difficulty m ov i n g i nt o t h e wo rld of Estandor. Likewise, I had no problem with the modern world in which we live our daily lives.

The biggest challenge I faced

“Jack can’t make sense of what has happened to him.” — Darryl Nyznyk was in creating a complete world outside the one in which we live, and somehow making it real in the context of our current world, so that neither I nor my reader

would devolve into car toon fantasy.”

I look for moments in novels and one of the most telling in Darryl’s occurs when Jack and his friend Paul, while on a camping trip, have a deadly encounter with the Clayton brothers.

It was attached to the head that held the eyes through which he was seeing, but the attachment was different. It was muscled differently than the body Jack knew.”

Later: “Jack saw [his] face….

It was not the face he viewed with disdain in the mirror the morning that he’d left for his camping trip, however.” It was a younger face.

Put plainly, his “lawyerly mind” can’t make sense of what has

happened to him!

Another key moment takes pla ce bet wee n Ja ck , who’s called Jzchack by the people of Estandor, the medieval world where he f inds himself, and t he crone Nal ia, descr ibed wonde r f u l ly a s p os se s si ng “clear blue eyes that sparkled amidst the folds and creases of her ancient face.” His memories of another life, Jack tells her, in another world, are real. He has a family and friends in that world and “’I don’t know what to do.’” (No spoilers here, reader, except the crone’s sage advice is, “‘Listen to your heart.’”)

Some journeys can’t be rushed. Asking someone to marry you on the first date is rarely successful. You may have a desire for financial independence. But unless you win the lottery or receive a sizeable inheritance, it won’t happen overnight.

Putting an unreasonable time limit on reaching your goal leads to frustration.

Success takes patience.

Attaining your goal is what matters.

The exact time needed is irrelevant.

When something is taking longer than anticipated, you have to adjust. Patience is essential for success.

It’s wonderful when things go exactly as expected. But if things don’t go as

planned, strengthen your determination.

Success is only possible by persisting in the face of adversity. Remember that failure only occurs when you give up. “When the going gets tough, the tough get going,” is the way dreams are turned into reality.

Keep adjusting your attitude to keep it positive. A negative attitude only worsens a situation. Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that being negative is being realistic. A positive attitude is essential for overcoming adversity.

Life requires effort. Ironically, it takes as much effort, if not more, to suffer as it does to succeed. Putting extra effort into preparation is much more effective than the effort required to fix things later. “If you don’t have time to do it right the first time, where will you find the time to do it over?” is a good question to ask yourself before cutting corners. Prepare first. Then adapt and adjust as needed to stay on your course.

It works tirelessly at the local level to eradicate food insecurity in New London

County. An organization of the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut, it provides pantries, mobile food pantries, a building at 374 Board Street in New London, and programs housed in many organizations across the county.

The United Way is helped by the community to reach out and serve those who know hunger. United Way applauds those who have a CROP Walk every year and help the solidarity of all – Living United on behalf of impact, help, and hope.

Junior Geralson Withrow (Mystic) paced the Laser men, placing eighth out of 129 runners on the 8K course in a career-fastest 28 minutes, 34 seconds. His time would have been good for 73rd out of 206 runners in the varsity race. Senior Matt Holden (Methuen, MA) was next across the line for Lasell, placing 45th in a career-best time of 30:43. Junior David Jean (Malden, MA) and freshman Zach Kirsch (Winsted) came in 64th and 66th, respectively, with career-best times of 31:52 and 31:55, followed by sophomore Joan Guzman (Nantucket, MA), 71st in a career-best 32:20, senior Kyle Mullen (West Newbury, MA), 79th in a careerbest 32:56, and senior Kevin Wallin (Billerica, MA), 120th in 39:38.

Junior Amanda Miller (New Bedford, MA) was the top finisher for the Laser women, finishing the 5K race in 44th place in 22 minutes, 41 seconds.

Sophomore Shakira Henriquez (Methuen, MA) was the second-highest Laser finisher, placing 56th in a season-best time of 23:31, followed by freshman Devin McCarthy (West Bridgewater, MA), 68th in 24:12, and sophomore Emma Vierling (Monmouth, ME), 70th in a season-best 24:24.

arah Rudker of Salem, a member of the Lasell University class of 2020, was part of a cohort of students, faculty, and alumni to present and produce work at Boston Fashion Week.

The French Cultural Center in Boston partnered with the Lasell University Fashion Collection (LFC) to present a pop-up exhibit (pictured above), "100 Years of French Fashion," which included 19 garments and artifacts from the Lasell collection. The collaboration marked the public launch of the LFC's online catalogue, and served as a way to highlight student work through the installation's written research and mounted artifacts.

Fashion Merchandising and Management students Deanna Plaisted '21, Kendra Sperry '20, and Matthew Searth '21, as well as Fashion Design and Production students Elizabeth Witherell '20 and Sarah Reese '20, worked with LFC faculty to curate and present their work at the exhibit.

"This was a significantly positive and upbeat evening that celebrated not only the sagacious power of research regarding dress and appearance, but also the facilitation of our identity as a strong and vital university," said Lynn Blake, program chair of fashion design.

The partnership was fostered by Jill Carey, professor and curator of the LFC. Carey and Stephanie Hebert, collections manager, are eager to move forward with additional partnerships that highlight the historical and scholarly opportunities available through the LFC. "Without a doubt, the exhibit at the French Cultural Center represented Lasell University as a leader in community culture," said Anne Trevenen, dean of the School of Fashion and associate professor of fashion design.

he women's cross country team at Eastern Connecticut State University began its fall 2019 season with six new runners and nine returning runners. Among the student athletes is Samara Johnson '20 of Lebanon, who majors in Social Work.

Head Coach Kathy Mani zza commented on the difficult preseason and developing mental toughness.

"Preseason is rough, but I make it hard purposefully so the athletes know what is to come the first five days of the season. On the first day the women run eight miles. On the second day they run on Mount Greylock in Massachusetts, which is eight miles uphill and 4 miles downhill."
