Dear Editor, I just read the Veterans issue of the Resident yesterday. Magnificent! What wonderful detail on those who served the Country. My active duty was during the "Cold War" between Korea and Vietnam followed by 18 years in the USN Ready Reserve. I flew as a bombardier-navigator on carrier-based Heavy Attack Squadrons and fortunately never saw combat. Thanks, again for all you do for our communities.

MPTN Inauguration Ceremony

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation held its annual Inauguration Ceremony January 2, officially commencing new terms of office for Chairman Rodney Butler, Councilor Richard E. Sebastian, and Councilor Daniel Menihan. Chairman Butler is serving his sixth consecutive term of office, which began in 2004. Mr. Butler, above being sworn in by Elders Council Vice Chairwoman Marjorie Colebut-Jackson and Laughing Woman, Spiritual Leader, previously served as Treasurer from 2005 through 2009, and has served as Chairman since 2010. In addition to his Chairman duties, Mr. Butler serves as Interim CEO for Foxwoods Resort Casino. A recipient of the Tribal Leader of the Year award from the Native American Finance Officers Association (2017), Chairman Butler is a founding trustee of the Mashantucket (Western) Pequot Tribe Endowment Trust.

USS North Dakota (SSN 784) Returns From Deployment

The Virginia-class, nuclear-powered, fast-attack submarine, USS North Dakota (SSN 784), returned to its homeport at Naval Submarine Base, New London, marking the successful completion of its deployment on Thursday, January 31, at 2:00 pm. Under the command of Cmdr. Mark Robinson, North Dakota is returning from the European Command Areas of Responsibility where they executed the Chief of Naval Operation’s Maritime Strategy. Boy Scout Troop 21 Fund-Raising Buffet

Work Vessels For Vets

e love it when a plan comes together,” exclaimed Cathy Cook, Executive Director of Work Vessels for Vets (WVFV), the Mystic based charity that awards equipment to injured veterans who are star ting a business. “We matched an in-kind donation of $5000 of unneeded landscape pavers for mosaics f rom Riverhead Building Supply (l-r) Annette Montoya and Mary of Niantic with the needs of Ballachino with Lulu. a Waterford veteran who is starting a unique business "Pieceful Connections." It is a landscape design company focusing on cognitive gardens.”

“I want to teach our children the importance of sustainability and stewardship. When I learned what nature does to help create more complex brain structures in young children, I realized that this is something that needs to be shared,” said Navy veteran Annette Montoya of Waterford.

The large donation to WVFV was delivered to Montoya this week.

This is a win-win-win transaction for the donor, the charity and the veteran awardee. The pavers were leftover from UBS when Riverhead bought the Niantic company. These items are not part of the Riverhead product line and they wanted to utilize the space where the pavers were stored.

Recently, Montoya was approached by the Chief of Staff with one of the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) hospitals and asked about creating a cognitive garden to help with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI), noting that the same principals she espouses to help children with cognitive development will also relate to those who have suffered cognitive impairment.

Rebate Check for Grasso Tech photo & story

The checkpresentation ceremony was held in the elegant lobby of Grasso Tech’s new 226,000-square-foot school building. The ceremony was attended by Mayor of the City of Groton Keith Hedrick, GU Director of Utilities Ron Gaudet, Grasso Tech Principal Patricia Feeney, CT State Senator Cathy Osten (D-Sprague), GU Key Accounts General Manager Len Mediavilla, GU Commissioner George Scully, and several additional administrators.

Groton Utilities provides their customers rebates for installing premium energy-efficient products.

The annual kilowatt hour (kW-h) savings over the baseline building code totals 184,580. (A kW-h is a unit of energy equal to 3.6 megajoules.) Estimated demand reduction was 265 kW-h, with an estimated lifetime kW-h savings of $2,768,700.

This will save the school a tremendous amount on its electric bill, noted Senator Osten, who is Co-chair of the CT State Appropriations Committee.

“This goes above and beyond the code for energy efficiency,” she remarked. “It’s important to be able to reallocate these savings to the students.”

U.S. Coast Guard Academy 138th Commencement Chelsea Groton Bank Boasts Community and Service

What is a mutual? Michael: A mutual is a form of governance. It has no shareholders. It's created purely for the good of its customers and the communities that it serves. Cardinal Moved Flagpole!

U.S. National Security Advisor, Ambassador John B. Bolton delivered the keynote address at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s 138th commencement exercise on Wednesday, May 22. Bolton has been President Donald Trump’s national security adviser since April of last year. He previously served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under President George W. Bush and has held a variety of other positions in the federal government. Ambassador Bolton assured, “You are well prepared to face the challenges of this century!”

Breaking Ground for $12M Westerly Art Center

On Friday, May 17, in downtown Westerly in front of the iconic United Theatre, history was in the making as Co-chairs Chuck and Deborah Royce, board members Senator Dennis Algiere and Maureen Fitzgerald with other officials and dignitaries dug in their shovels marking an official groundbreaking for the $12M new Westerly Arts Center. To date, $10.1M is raised and the purpose for extending an open invitation to this groundbreaking gathering was to seek more support from those who have the means to contribute.

Rob Simmons’ Infantry Officer Candidate Class Comes to Mystic to Celebrate Their 52nd Class Reunion

A dozen members of First Selectman Robert R. “Rob” Simmons Infantry Officer Candidate School [OCS] Class, 73rd Company, plan to come to Mystic with their wives in June to celebrate their 52nd class reunion. Graduating from a strenuous 23-week-long course at the US Army’s Infantry OCS at Fort Benning, GA, in January 1967, most of the newly graduated Second Lieutenants shipped off to Vietnam. While at Fort Benning, the “Home of the Infantry,” candidates were trained in leadership, Army ethics, military skills and company grade weapons and equipment. The drop-out rate from the strenuous course of instruction was almost 50%.

As you glance over to get a glimpse of the majestic American flag flying over the shining sea of new cars, you do a double-take. “Either that flag has moved or I seriously need a vacation,” you think, fretting a bit about your state-of-mind. Well, you may need a vacation but never fear, you’re not imagining things! The flag was, in fact, moved recently to make way for a major expansion of the dealership, explained Val Labrec, Cardinal’s Parts Manager, who runs Cardinal’s Flag Loaner program.

Mystic Pilot’s 50-Year Career Marked by Ups and Downs

It was a family trip to Bermuda when he was 12 that ignited Roy Parkinson’s interest in becoming a pilot. That life-changing event led to five decades spent flying a myriad of aircraft without a single accident! For his outstanding record, Roy was awarded the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award upon his retirement. Roy grew up near T.F. Green International Airport in Warwick, Rhode Island; his father was a Civil Service engineer for the Naval Air Station at Quonset Point. Despite his proximity to planes in his early years, Roy never actually flew until his family’s Bermuda vacation, which started with a quick hop from Warwick to Boston on an American Airlines DC-6.

That was fun, but young Roy was about to be truly dazzled!

Clean Up Sound and Harbors photo & story

by Sarah Smith lean Up Sound and Harbors (CUSH) hosted their annual Winter Gathering on December 5 at Cottrell Brewery in Pawcatuck. CUSH aims to keep our local water clean and safe by eliminating nitrogen pollution, bacterial contamination, and plastic waste.

University of Connecticut (UCONN) Avery Point students have also been researching the water quality and environmental health of Little Narraganset Bay, and they presented their research at the event. Narragansett Bay is a degraded estuary of the Pawcatuck River on the Rhode IslandConnecticut state line. CUSH President, Chris Freeman, presented an update that CUSH has been working with the Nature Conservancy to develop a nitrogen pollution plan for Stonington to help mitigate the poor water quality.

Freeman also introduced UCONN Avery Point Instructor Dr. Julie Granger and Co-instructor Dr. Claudia Koerting. Dr. Granger explained that the student’s research was conducted during their rigorous Field Methods course. Dr. Koerting explained how students derived their research topics by analyzing raw historical data collected by CUSH to look for patterns in the coastal ecosystem.

Students then collected measurements and samples to compare to CUSH historical data for analysis.

Their curious and catchy poster “How Long Should We Hold Our Breath?” analyzed CUSH data from the Summer of 2017 and found that during the early morning hours between 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM, there was very low to no oxygen concentration in the water. Lombardi explained, “We wanted people to understand that for aquatic life in this water, it is the equivalent of holding their breath for four hours every day.”

Greg Piccolo Looks Back on 55 Years of Making Music

On June 1, Pawcatuck native and blues saxophonist extraordinaire Greg Piccolo was honored by the Stonington Community Center (Como) in their Stars over Stonington celebration of local luminaries. Indeed Greg, now in the 55th year of his international music career and still “blowing strong,” is one of the brightest stars to come out of Southeastern Connecticut! Greg first played at the Como as a talented young man of only 13. He was into rock 'n' roll back then. “My first band was called 'The Rejects,'” recalled Greg, who recently returned from playing with blues guitarist Ronnie Earl at the Utah Blues Festival. he Mohegan Tribal Nation hosted the Wigwam, or Green Corn Festival on the weekend of August 20th at Fort Shantock, Uncasville. Thousands of participants and spectators joined in this annual tradition - a celebration of culture, including some from as far away as, South Dakota and Bermuda to those from as close as, Uncasville and Mystic.

“Nowadays, it gives us an opportunity to get together and share some aspects of our culture with the community at large,” states Bob Soper, Sr., Chairman, Council of Elders.

The name “Wigwam” comes from the word Wigwomun, meaning “welcome” or “come in the house.” In many ways, the Wigwam was a community open house and homecoming.

Both corn and home play central roles in the celebration.

In keeping with tradition, it includes crafts and food items for sale, plus traditional dance and storytelling. Saturday’s weather was picture-perfect and the generous breezes off the Thames River were much appreciated by the dancers.

Coach of the Year

George Crouse was “shocked” when he found out that he was named the 2019 National High School Coaches Association National Girls Tennis Coach of the Year.

Of course, nobody who knows George were surprised a bit, given his long, successful tenure coaching both boys' and girls' tennis at Stonington High School. He earned his 500th career win this spring. George started coaching boys' tennis in 1973. Ten years later, he began coaching the girls.

But his association with tennis started long before, when he was a young boy growing up on Church Street, on the Stonington side of Mystic. George played as much as possible, eventually becoming co-captain of the team. “The highest I got was three singles, but I was undefeated in five singles in junior year. I liked it so I kept working hard and didn't give up.”

1. Combine chicken with the last four ingredients and set it aside.

The chicken will marinate while you’re preparing the potatoes.

2. Bring salted water to a boil and parboil the potatoes for 8 minutes.

3. Add olive oil and butter to a large skillet and heat it over medium-high heat. When the butter is melted, add the drained potatoes and cook until the potatoes are golden and tender.

Set the potatoes aside in a plate.

4. With the same skillet over a medium heat, add butter, garlic, red chili pepper flakes, and herbs.

5. Place the chicken strips in the skillet in one layer. Keep the marinade. Cook for about 1 minute on each side or until the chicken pieces are nicely browned.

6. 1 minute before the chicken is done, add the reserved marinade and cook, stirring.

7. Add the potatoes and heat through. Add salt and pepper if needed. Remove the dish from heat and serve.

Carrying on Honored Tradition

On Sunday, July 28, Stonington held its annual Blessing of the Fleet, a venerable tradition in the Borough since 1954. The event honors fishermen who lost their lives at sea as well as blesses active fishing vessels and crews for the coming year, explained Georgia Roderick Crowley, who is co-chairing the event along with her husband Mike Crowley and niece Ellie Dunn. The Grand Marshall of this year's parade is Captain Alan Chaplaski, who was owner and master of the Neptune, the former flagship of the Stonington fleet.

Before Christopher Duncklee could even talk, he was creating art inspired by the fishing vessels of Stonington. Fishing was a way of life for many in the Borough and he grew up immersed in the rich seafaring culture. “My Portuguese grandfather on my mother's side was a shipwright at Stonington Boatworks, which was owned by Hank Palmer. He would take me around to the docks and show me the boats they were working on. I loved the boats in the boatyard at the town docks and Bindloss dock and started sketching them when I was preverbal,” Chris recalls. “I also became mesmerized by the oil paintings of Ellery Thompson, which were hanging everywhere in the Borough.”

Chelsea Groton Grant

On July 15, Easterseals Capital Region & Eastern CT received a grant in the amount of $5,000 from the Chelsea Groton Foundation to advance its Veterans Technology Center based out of the organizations’ Veterans Rally Point Center in Norwich. Lambert did not have an opening act; however, he immediately energized the theater with his charisma and vibrant personality. Lambert adorned the stage in a blue satin suit with silver stilettos; disco-ball lights shimmering on his silhouette.

Aug 21 ~ Sep 3 Rhode Island Celebrates Victory Day over Japan

Imperial Japan's surrender to the United States in 1945 is one of the most important events in modern history, for it brought an end to World War II. The day was August 15 in Japan, but due to time-zone differences, the surrender was announced on August 14 in the United States, so that became known as “Victory Over Japan Day,” or “V-J Day.” Incredibly, Rhode Island is the only U.S. state that recognizes this day as an official holiday; it is known as “Victory Day” and celebrated on the second Monday of August. At noon on August 12, under sunny blue skies, veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf Wars gathered at the Westerly War Memorial for a solemn Victory Day ceremony. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8955, the Disabled American Veterans Josiah F. Branford Chapter, and Project Outreach, a local organization dedicated to helping veterans obtain needed benefits, organized the event, led by Ed Liguori and Walter Kimball, Korean War Veterans who are Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively of the Westerly Veterans Memorial Committee. Local dignitaries were in attendance and the Resident owner and publisher Alexis Ann, herself an Army veteran, was the mistress of ceremonies. Westerly Town Council President Chris Duhamel welcomed all in attendance. “This is a time of reflection of what the sacrifices our World War II veterans did, and all the veterans who are part of the fabric of our town,” he said. Sep 4 ~ 17 Scarecrow Festival Returns

Scarecrows are making their way to the 14th annual Preston Scarecrow Festival, scheduled for Saturday, September 28.

The free, community-wide event has become a muchanticipated visit for families throughout Southeastern CT year after year. As the name suggests, scarecrows are a big draw for festival-goers as children, adults, and local businesses enter creative scarecrows into the contest. Displayed throughout the festival grounds, attendees get to vote on their favorites which range from Frankenstein to Mick Jagger.

Schemitzun Festival 2019

Schemitzun 2019 was held on August 24th and 25th on the Mashantucket Cultural Grounds. It was the perfect opportunity to experience Eastern Woodland culture first hand. The hyper-visual festival featured dance exhibitions, social dances, storytelling, authentic Native American cuisine, crafts, and more.

Schemitzun is a unique, two-day Native American powwow honoring the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe’s Mantoo (Creator), the provider of all things, and celebrates the Tribe’s Eastern Woodland Culture, traditions and heritage.

Equine Therapy Heals Heroes

New London resident Craig McCalister first witnessed the healing power of horses when he saw how they helped his brother-inlaw, an Afghanistan War veteran who was seriously wounded in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in 2009. Craig, a Navy and Coast Guard veteran himself, had been looking for a way to help other veterans, so he teamed up with two equine therapy specialists, Thor Torgerson and Christina Clark, and co-founded Veterans Equine Therapeutic Services (VETS) in North Stonington. The VETS board includes Gary Schmid, Scott Dilley, Adam Holzschuh, and Doug Capazzi, all military veterans.

Connecticut Army National Guard Aviation Unit Deploys

Maj. Gen. Francis Evon, the Adjutant General of the Connecticut National Guard announced that soldiers from the 2/104th Aviation Regiment of Windsor Locks have mobilized and have been deployed to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Freedom Sentinel. The departure for deploying soldiers and CH-47D Chinook helicopters from the Windsor Locks Readiness Center in Windsor Locks took place on Thursday, Sep. 5, at 8:00 AM. The 104th has deployed multiple times, its most recent deployment to Afghanistan in 2013, where the Chinooks transported supplies and personnel to firebases at altitudes beyond the reach of other helicopters.

Windsor Chair

T

he Windsor chair was introduced in England in the late 17th century, and it was about 50 years l a t e r, a r o u n d 1730, t hat t he f i r st A me r ica n Wi nd sor ch a i r s were made in Philadelphia. The A me r ica n m a ke r s created different styles of Windsors.

They all had a shaped wooden seat made of a single t h ick piece of wood, spindles used for a back and perhaps arms.

There were splayed legs that were inserted into holes in the seat. The Windsor gradually changed into a captain's chair with no spindles and a low back. Windsors were made of

several types of wood chosen for properties like strength for the legs, pliability for the top of the back, and easy carveability for the seat. Then they were painted a single dark color.

If there is a hole in the seat, the chair probably was converted to a potty chair. Rocking chairs can be early chairs with added rockers or 18t h c e nt u r y chairs made with original rockers.

You can tell by the way they are attached.

The chairs are named for the shape of the back. This is a birdcage Windsor with rockers that may have been added. It was made in the early 19th century in Massachusetts. The auction estimate at a James Julia sale was $500 to $700.

How do the pros do it? — Jim H., via email DEAR BEN: Pet photography really is a skill. I have the same problem myself—often I've seen my pets sitting in just the right pose, framed by the window with the set ting su n in the background. But before I can grab my smartphone to snap a photo, they've moved, the light has changed, and the magic is

gone.

He r e a r e a few t ip s on getting great, natural-looking photos of your pets, even with a smartphone camera: • Be patient: Getting the best shot takes practice. You may need to wait for your pet to sit or lie down in the right spot.

• Go to their level: Get down on the floor with your pets and bring the camera lens even with their eyes and nose. You will get some intriguing shots.

• Wait for pets to settle down, then surprise them: This works best with dogs who respond well to commands. Have

them sit or lie down, and once they're in place and relaxed, call their name just as you take the photo.

• Use natural light: Camera flashes reflect off the back of the eye to create the dreaded red-eye effect. Open the window shades to let in as much light as possible.

• Be prepared for more than one session: Take photos over the span of a few days—you'll get more practice, and your dogs may get more comfortable with the process.

Naval Submarine Support Center Command Change

Naval Submarine Support Center, New London (NSSC NLON) held a change of command ceremony at the Submarine Force Library and Museum, aboard the historic Richmond “Rock and Roll Rick” Crolius, US Navy veteran, of Groton Long Point, was ship USS Nautilus (SSN-571), on Friday, stunned when a crowd of hundreds cheered as Work Vessels for Vets President and Co- Sept. 20, at 1:00 PM. (l) Cmdr. Shawn founder John Niekrash presented the organization’s cherished “Patriot Star Award” to William will relieve Cmdr. Brian Nowak as honor Rick’s dedication and deep commitment to veterans. William E. Lewis Jr., 1932-2019

William E. Lewis, Jr., 87, lifelong resident of Mystic died Monday, September 9 at the Westerly Hospital. Born in New London, he was the son of the late William E. Lewis and Ellen (Watson) Lewis, and the husband of 28 years to Kathryn (Laffargue) Lewis. He was in military service of his country for 42 years, of which he spent three years with the CT Air National Guard and 39 years with the CT Army National Guard.

Mohegan, Yale Partnership

Christening of the USS Oregon

Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02), Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces, participated in the christening ceremony for the future USS Oregon, the U.S. Navy’s newest Virginia-class submarine which was constructed in part by the men and women of General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton.

The Mohegan Tribe, in conjunction with its flagship property Mohegan Sun, and Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) announced that they have entered into a partnership with YNHHS as the preferred provider partner to deliver high quality and more affordable health care for all Mohegan Tribal citizens, employees and their families. As part of this partnership, YNHHS will develop onsite facilities on the Mohegan Reservation to provide expert health care to employees and their families including primary care, walk-in care and specialty care services, including patient care navigators and a patient resource center to assist with navigating the health care system and promoting wellness. The health care center will also be open to the public, including Mohegan visitors and individuals in the surrounding communities.

John J. James, Foxwoods President and CEO, stands beside the Great Foxwoods Pumpkin. Weighing 2,294.5 pounds, it beat the old state record by over 300 pounds and is the fifth largest pumpkin ever weighed in North America.

Grown by Alex Noel of Pomfret in 94 days, the pumpkin is 19 feet in circumference and is on display at the Celebration Zone on the Great Cedar Retail Concourse.

Iwo Jima Veteran Teaches Painting

At 95, Harry Danos of Niantic calls himself a “graduate” of the Battle of Iwo Jima. He's one of the last surviving combatants from that bloody five-week battle, during which U.S. Marine Corps and Navy captured the island from the Imperial Japanese Army.

Today, he teaches watercolor painting to other veterans at Niantic Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5849, of which he is a member, and donating his instructor fees to the VFW.

Blessing of the Animals

There was a lot of happy barking in Avondale on November 30 when Kathy and Bill McKendree welcomed guests to their farm at Avondale preserve for a special Blessing of the Pets event. The Rev.
