I

t is with extreme honor that we present this issue of the Resident Good News, which includes the 3rd Annual Lest We Forget Commemorative Insert honoring our local veterans from the past and present. Many towns across America will salute these brave men and women who fought for the freedoms that we enjoy today.

You who served know too well that World War II (1939-1945) was a transformational time, demanding sacrifice and communal effort rooted in patriotism AND the very sense that this was a battle for survival. It is important to note that women, too were working for the common good, going to work in the factories, government offices, munition plants and even military service for some. Veterans Find Fun and Service on Amateur Radio Team story & photo

by Anna Trusky ilitar y veterans are often imbued with a commitment to serving that stays with them long after their formal service to the country is done. One way some local vets are continuing to give back is by volunteering on the Westerly Amateur Radio Team (WART).

WART works with Westerly Emergency Management and the Rhode Island Amateur Radio Emergency Services, a group of licensed amateurs who voluntarily register their qualifications and equipment for communications duty in public service when disaster strikes. WART also provides communications support for public service events in the community, such as walks and runs for charity, to help make sure participants are safe and to provide assistance when needed.

to join WART, explains Jim Creamer, a former Quarter Master in the U.S. Navy, who ove r sees WA RT. “ We also welcome non-hams who would like to get their amateur radio license and want to serve their community. It’s not necessary to have equipment to join, although most hams do have their own equipment,” Jim said. “For example, I have a station at my house and keep radios in my truck and walkie-talkies I can use while walking around. We also have equipment we can use provided by the town at the Westerly Emergency Operations Center.”

Jim, who was born in New Haven but moved to Westerly as a young child so his parents could work at Westerly Hospital, served in the Navy from 1972 till 1981. He did boot camp in the Great Lakes. “After boot camp I went to Newport, RI, learned how to navigate, and became a quartermaster. Then I attended submarine school in New London, and in early 1973 I reported to my ship in Newport News, VA,”

Vietnam Veteran Mike Brankert enjoys using the radio skills he learned in the Army as part of the Westerly Amateur Radio Team, which supports Westerly Emergency Management.

Jim recalled. He served aboard the U.S.S. Alexander Hamilton for more than five years and then was assigned to shore duty at the SUBASE in Groton.

“That was the most memorable time for me. I got to work on the East Coast flyaway of a deepsubmergence rescue vessel,

the Mystic, and coordinated everything on this end of the country. It was very interesting and I really enjoyed it!”

Jim got his first radio license in 2005, through a class he attended in Waterford. Soon thereafter, he got involved with amateur radio emergency services in Rhode Island and is now the amateur radio Emergency Services Coordinator for Westerly and Washington County and Assistant Section Emergency Coordinator of Operations for the whole state.

Among the other vets on the team is Mike Brankert of Westerly, who was a radioman in the Army Air Corps in Vietnam.

After his basic training in Fort Dix, Mike received advanced radio training and was half of a two-man team that set up mobile communications for the First Aviation Brigade in a two-ton Army truck in South Vietnam.

“We monitored communications using a doublet antenna, which we built out of two tripods with an antenna in the middle that leads to the radio. I felt honored that they

picked me to do that,” Mike said.

Mike enjoys being able to utilize his radio skills on WART. “WART is a ver y necessar y part of communications during good times and bad,” he said.

“That’s what ham radio is for.

We help provide emergency com mu nications in case of a n e q u i p m e nt b r e a kd ow n .

We’ve actually talked to the International Space Station!”

“It’s fun and it supports the community locally, statewide, and nationally,” Jim agreed.

“Amateur radio is great resource for emergencies. It allows us to give back to the community.”

WART meets at 6:00 PM on the fourth Wednesday of the month at the Emergency Operations Center at the Westerly Police Station, 60 Airport Road.

“Normally the meeting is just our team, but we also occasionally have someone from police come in and give a talk,” Jim said. “We go over upcoming events, past events, and equipment issues.” For more information, please contact Jim Creamer at kb1mao@verizon.net.

Iwo Jima Veteran Teaches Painting at Niantic VFW story & photo

by Anna Trusky t 95, Harry Danos of Niantic calls himself a “graduate” of the Battle of Iwo Jima. One of the last surviving combatants from that bloody five-week battle, during which U.S. Marine Corps and Navy captured the island from the Imperial Japanese Army, Harry still recalls the carnage well. “I was lucky to get out of there alive,” he said.

A s pa r t of t he 34 8th Ser vice Operations and Communications group, Harry helped monitor the Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber Enola Gay as it f lew from Iwo Jima and dropped the atomic bomb nick named “Little Boy” on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.

Fortune smiled upon him when he was tossed off the military plane he had just boarded to fly from the Philippines to Guam on his way home. An Army officer commandeered the aircraft so he could go to Japan and survey the damage in Hiroshima and

Nagasaki. The plane crashed into the side of a mountain in dense fog; all aboard were killed.

As his four-year stint in the service came to an end, Harry thought about career options. He’d previously worked for General Electric but wasn’t sure he wanted to go back to his old job. One of his captains in Japan had suggested that Harry try architecture, since he liked both engineering and art. He took the captain’s advice, graduating from Syracuse and

Rice universities and becoming a highly successful, national awardwinning architect.

“I have had the joy of being able to design 50 percent of Niantic,” Harry said. He designed everything from schools and houses to the East Lyme Town Hall. One of his houses was featured in Good Housekeeping magazine.

Harry married his sweetheart Catherine “Kitty” from his hometown of Springfield, MA,

and had one son, Michael, who was a Coast Guard f lotilla c om m a nde r a nd t r ag ica l ly passed away at 32. In 2009 Harry designed the Michael P. Danos Memorial Park at Lookout Point at the Coast Guard Station in New London to honor his son.

Kitty passed in 2015. “She was my right hand and my left hand,” Harry said.

Despite his family and full career, Harry managed to find time for watercolor painting, a pastime with which he has enjoyed “a love affair” for the last 50 years.

Among his works are a replica of Joe Rosenthal’s iconic Associated Press photograph of the raising of the U.S. flag by six U.S. Marines on top of Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. Harry specializes in shoreline scenes but paints just about any subject you can imagine.

His work has been exhibited at many galleries throughout Connecticut and New England and featured in American Artist magazine.

Har r y taught painting regionally and nationally, and

for many years he took groups to Greece to paint the breathtaking scenery in the land of his parents’ birth. He taught at the Mystic Ar t Associat ion, Gui lford Handcrafts and Art Center, and was president of the East Lyme Art League.

“The joy in teaching, for me, was not t he monet a r y compensation but watching people wake up to their own capabilities and hearing them say, ‘I didn't know I could do that!’”

Harry said. Today, he is teaching watercolor painting to other veterans at Niantic Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5849, of which he is a member, and donating his instructor fees to the VFW. “This gives me an opportunity to give something back,” Harry said. “A lot of people will benefit from this.”

prisoners of war, or have serviceconnected disability along with their caregivers will be permitted to use the commissary, military excha nge a nd ma ny M W R facilities per the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act. “We are excited and looking for ward to serving this new pat ron g roup at ou r M W R facilities throughout the shore enterprise,” said James Baker,

with obtaining base access.

“As we continue to focus on our number one priority of ensuring the safety of our people and the security of our installations, we are dedicated to providing top-notch customer service to our veterans as they come into the Visitors Control Centers (VCC) to process their base access,” said Wi l l iam Holdren, deputy director for CNIC’s force protection program.

The event took place prior to the start of Bellator 231 (Mir vs. Nelson), as Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment’s Sr. VP of Sports & Entertainment, Tom Cantone, presented Bellator President, Scott Coker, with the honor. In accepting the recognition on behalf of Bellator MMA, Coker said, “This is quite an achievement, it’s a milestone Tom Cantone, Senior Vice President of Sports and Entertainment Mohegan for the company, and it all started Sun; Scott Coker, President Bellator MMA; and Drew M. With confidence enough a nation is invincible.”

Our nation prior to World War II years was burdened with complacency and indifference. We chose to keep our shores hidden and to live with an air of ambivalence towards the problems our neighbors across the ocean were having.

The Nazi War Machine was flourishing.

Great Britain, in its darkest moments of the onslaught in Europe, determined that the Nazis attempt to deprive the people of their freedom was totally wrong and that they were ready to stand up and fight for that freedom.

After a setback in and with their leader the British recognized that there was a critical need for a strong public servant who they felt possessed unusual strength and, more importantly, was seen as someone who had earned the respect of the people. The person who exemplified all of these desired qualities was none other than Winston Churchill.

Churchill, as England’s new prime minister spoke words of encouragement and these words resonated like lethal weapons which were translated into the people’s determination to stand up to the crisis which they believed was threatening their God given right to freedom. Churchill becomes the symbol of strength and with this new found strength builds confidence in his citizenry to the point where they believed they were, indeed, invincible and unbeatable. The feeling of unity of purpose brought ultimate victory to the British.

America today is faced with the image of becoming a “third world country.” Our economy is flexible, our military has been lowered and somewhat depleted and many of our people are discouraged. Our leader is struggling with the task of gaining back

the confidence we once enjoyed.

Countries around the world are looking to see how we are planning to cope with this problem. The challenge of mediocrity is before us.

First and foremost it became apparent that after the few “down years” we were in need of a leader who exemplified the leadership qualities of Winston Churchill.

The 2016 election gave us such a man. Here was an individual who showed a strong desire to become America’s public servant and at a high cost of personal sacrifice.

On assuming the presidency of the United States he called upon all people in the country to help him make America the best possible “mirror of democracy.” The president’s words were forceful: “We must make America great again.” Through and with his efforts we are striving to attain this stature of invincibility. This, in fact, is an acknowledged effort and a positive response to our veterans who have fervently called upon all Americans: “On this Veterans Day hear and support us. Republicans, Democrats, Federal, State and local officials strive to gain back your self-respect.

Be ever mindful of the fact that without your self-respect you will never achieve respect for each other. Until your leaders in Washington put together “an agreement that will encompass respect for one another our hope for our nation to become invincible will never come to fruition.”

At the risk of being redundant I myself, on behalf of all veterans, ask this of all our leaders: “Pick up the gauntlet of our freedom base and together bring back all Americans to the point where we can proudly say we are Americans together again.”

As a concerned American can you really refuse this request?

I want all readers to know that I am neither Republican nor Democrat and that in 1941 when my president called for help I responded immediately. The fact that the president needed help superseded the fact that he was a Democrat. My president asked for help and I responded. Any duly elected president Democrat or Republican needs and deserves our support.

early 60 airmen and their aircraft assigned to the 103rd Airlift Wing, based out of East Granby are returning home following a four-month deployment to Kuwait. They will be rejoining the 69 Airmen from the unit that returned on Tuesday.

The unit was deployed in support of Operation Spartan Shield and Operation Inherent Resolve with the mission of providing tactical airlift capability.

Senior military leaders from the Connecticut National Guard will be at Bradley Air National Guard base to greet the airmen.

"We're incredibly happy to welcome back our airmen to Connecticut and to see them rejoin their loved ones in time for the holiday season," said Maj. Gen. Francis J. Evon, Adjutant General of the Connecticut National Guard. "Their mission has been vital to national security interests and we are thankful for their service to our state and nation."

This one-day observance lets us focus on an awesome debt of gratitude that deserves to be acknowledged every day of every year.

More than just saying how grateful we are to the millions of military men and women who have served with exceptional skill, leadership and vitality, we should all choose to celebrate their continued service to others. While we all know the accomplishments our military has achieved overseas and in stateside posts far from home, we may not be as in tune to the legacies being created in our own communities.

We all remember great leaders who have served in the military.

Challenges created by these injuries threatened his personal life and career, leading Corey to medical treatment as well as transcendental meditation, which taught him new ways to treat and heal himself. Today, he’s an award-winning schoolteacher in Ohio and well-known national advocate for the power of transcendental meditation. There are so many others like him, veterans who are leaving a legacy of hope and healing behind them.

Dr. Chrisanne Gordon, author of Turn the Lights On!, is a physician who has personally struggled to recover from a brain injury, an experience that inspired her to create the Resurrecting Lives Foundation to help military veterans recover from TBI.

To get some insights into this growing trend and find out what employers can do to help keep younger people on board, the Resident interviewed Paul Lavella, M.A., L.P.C., L.C.A.D.C., A.C.S., a mental health professional at Delphi Behavioral Health Group.

“With the millennial and Gen Z generations, we’re seeing a shift from previous generations. More members of these populations are taking a break from work for mental health reasons or changing careers when they are unhappy with their jobs. They are viewing their mental health as more of a priority,” Paul explained. “They are taking a closer look at what drives them, what they value, and what they want to dedicate their attention to.”

Paul Lavella has good advice for employers who hire young people just entering the workforce. at work is the rise of mental health challenges, Paul suggested. “Year over year we’ve been seeing rates of anxiety, depressive disorders, and suicidality increase in people in the young adult demographic, age 12 to 24,” he said. “One likely contributing factor is that it’s difficult for young people to escape stressors because of the increased interconnectedness from social media.”

Paul explained that many cu r rent teenagers have less resiliency skills than the previous generations; this means a lower

abilit y to tolerate st ressf ul situations and regulate emotions.

Fortunately, some states are starting to incorporate mental wellness into school curricula to help better prepare teens for adult life and the workforce. He advises parents to give their kids greater age-appropriate responsibilities at home; this will help in preparing them to deal with responsibilities at work.

How can employers help alleviate the issues young adults face at work? Paul has some suggestions: “We k now that less structure and more options increases anxiety, so it can be helpful to provide structure.

Lay out job and work place expectations very clearly during orientation. Give new hires material they can reference if they have questions. Offer support and tell them about employee assistance programs and other resources that are available.

Give reviews more frequently and provide plenty of feedback.

If possible, shift an employee into another position where they have a better chance of achieving success.”

n a busy hallway at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London are a series of memorials known as the Hall of Heroes. Every year near Veteran’s Day the entire Corps of Cadets and Academy community gather to induct alums into the hall’s Wall of Gallantry memorial.

This year, six graduates and their families were welcomed back to the Academy to commemorate those who have demonstrated courage in the face of danger and upheld the Coast Guard’s Core Values.

Here are the inductees and their stories: • As an HC-144 First pilot, Lt. Ronaqua Russell distinguished herself as part of the Coast Guard’s response to Hurricane Harvey.

• During the Vietnam War, Lt. Jay Creech was assigned to Explosive Loading Detachment #1 in Cat Lai, Vietman.

• As a member of U.S. Navy's Underwater Demolition Teams, Lt. Cmdr. Brian Naughton deployed in 2012 in direct support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S. led combat mission in Afghanistan that targeted Al Qaeda and Taliban forces.

• In the fall of 1996, the commanding officer of the 378-foot high endurance class cutter Morgenthau, Capt. Stephen Harvey, became the first U.S. Coast Guard Cutter to deploy to the Persian Gulf.

• When Lt. Carl Josephson was a cadet with the class of 1965, a frequent sight in the waters around New London was the Point White, an 82-foot Coast Guard law enforcement and search and rescue patrol boat.

• On the evening of Dec. 7, 1990, an aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Sitka, AK, responded to a distress call from three people aboard a fishing vessel awash in heavy seas. One member of the aircrew, Lt. Matthew Thomas, navigated more than 300 nautical miles from Sitka to Hecate, British Columbia, Canada, at night, in weather deteriorating to zero visibility with severe turbulence and winds up to 50 knots.

“Snail” Inkwell

I

n ancient Egypt, a rich man would not write his own letters but would travel with a scribe who wrote his letters for him. The scribe used a crude pen that had to be dipped in ink; he carried it on a stone with a slight hollow. As more learned to write, the ink holders became fancier, a nd carved stones like jade or marble were used. Liquid ink, a mixture of the blackening and liquid, made a different type of inkwell necessary. A traveling man had a pen and ink in a leakproof container made of ceramic, glass, shells, or later, metal or plastic.

The era of the inkwells that interests most collectors began

in the 18th century. Elaborate ceramic containers to hold ink on a desk as part of a set in an inkstand were important accessories. Soon all inkwells were glass set in metal or other leakproof containers that could screw or clamp shut.

One of the most u nusual is the porcelain "snail," a r evolv i ng, t i lt i ng inkwell. It looks like a snail shell on a metal frame standing on a saucer. The bottle revolves so the snail's head tilts up, exposing the opening for the pen. There are even twin snail holders. When the fountain pen was invented by Lewis Waterman in 1880, the need for inkwells vanished.

Is CBD Safe for Pets?

DEAR PAWS: More and more of my friends who have pets say they are giving them CBD oil, saying it has health benefits.

Isn't this derived from marijuana?

What benefit does this oil have on pets? Does it make them high? — Concerned Neighbor in Sarasota DEAR CONCERNED: It's tr ue that CBD (cannabidiol) is de r ive d f rom he mp a nd marijuana plants. However, it does not make them high. That's the role of the other notable component in marijuana, THC, which is a psychoactive. CBD oil does not contain THC, so people and animals taking it don't get

high.

It's important to know that CBD has not been approved as a treatment for any condition by the U.S. Food and Dr ug Administration (except for one drug that is used to treat epilepsy in humans). But pet owners who regularly give CBD oil to their pets -- usually added to their food -Ð say it calms them down, eases aggression and helps arthritic pets move more easily.

If you're worried about your friends giving CBD to their pets, worry more about whether the product itself is safe. Because the FDA hasn't approved any pet

Al Hirshen Isnʼt Ordinary

A

by Roger Zotti l Hirshen has had many jobs in his life, i ncludi ng bei ng a waiter, a Civil Rights and antipoverty lawyer, a consultant in Russia, Ukraine, and Albania for the United States Agency for International Development, and a Hollywood producer. Now he’s a writer. His book, a memoir, is titled The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man. Because of his hard work, his tenacity, and especially his deep concern for others, however, I believe he’s too modest when he calls himself an ordinary man!

One of the many persuasive chapters in his book is about the time, in 1961, he went on the road (like Jack Kerouac did) with two friends: Oliver, “a Queens black man,” and Walter, “a Polish

Catholic from the Manhattan.”

As for Al, his parents were Jewish immigrants from the Bronx. For the three young men, recent City College of New York graduates, the trip was an awakening. When it was over, the threesome had experienced bigotry. Firsthand!

I n M ississippi, yes, but in Wyoming—no way.” (Af ter graduating from the University of Chicago Law School, the country’s racism he witnessed that caused so much anguish to his friends and to society convinced him to take a job with the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department.)

“…mine is not a Jewish memoir, but it is about a Jewish man.” — Al Hirshen Al says he wrote his memoir so his “four grandchildren would know their history. But my ego kicked in when I realized the general public would appreciate

a front row seat to the history of the major changes of our times.

Also, I thought they would be interested in the lessons I learned from looking inward and from living, working and traveling abroad.”

Regarding his biggest challenge in writing his book, Al says it was keeping it interesting “to the general public. Instead of a list of facts, I had to learn how to create texture and context. It was essential I create a story line that would hold my readers’ interest.”

Growing up in the Bronx taught Al about life, and how he applied those lessons as an adult is his concern in the book’s first chapter. The streets taught him “being on the winning side was,” he writes, “often a matter of being chosen by or choosing the best athlete. This was a lesson I

applied years later in choosing staff in the Carter administration and as director of an anti-poverty law center (the National Housing Law Project).”

Learning “about the world and its history” is what Al hopes readers take from his memoir, but equally important is “if the book shows readers there is much to laugh at, to be positive about, and to enjoy in the limited time we all have in life—and, too, if readers see in it a path to make the world a better place—then I will be a happy writer.”
