Victories for People and Pets

O

n Monday, August 12, Rhode Island celebrated Victory Day– the day Japan surrendered to the United States, bringing an end to World War II. As a veteran and patriot, I was honored to be asked by the Westerly War Memorial Committee to emcee their ceremony and help pay tribute to the WWII vets still living in Westerly and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

I enjoyed sitting down with Nicholas Fortson, the President and CEO of CorePlus, and learning the history of the credit union and Nick’s fascinating history, too! Read all about it on page 5.

Stand Up for Animals (SUFA) in Westerly opened its shelter on Larry Hirsch Lane 10 years ago; that’s a decade of rescuing thousands of homeless dogs and cats, giving them a roof over their heads, food, and medical treatment, and helping them find good homes. Of course, this victory for animals would never have been possible without longtime Westerly resident Larry Hirsch, who was more than happy to talk with us about SUFA, page 4.

“We're members of the chamber and Lisa Konicki, the Executive Director, is a real dynamo and raised the funds. I helped by getting $5,000 from the Rhode Island Foundation,” he said. The book's artist is Rhode Island native Frankie Galasso.

by Anna Trusky tand Up for Animals (SUFA) in Westerly is celebrating 10 years since its wonderful shelter opened on Larry Hirsch Lane, in 2009. The independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization was founded in 2002 and works collaboratively with the Town of Westerly to take in unwanted or surrendered pets in the community.

SUFA co-founder Larry J. Hirsch, an attorney and longtime Westerly resident, quipped about the naming of the street.

“The road led to the town dump. They said, 'you can either have a road named after you that leads to the town dump or leads to an animal shelter. So I made sure the shelter was built!” he said. “Joe Turo, the Westerly Town Manager, and I sat down and formulated a plan whereby the town would give us Neighbors Neighbors a 99-yearHelping lease on the property if we would build a no-kill, FEMA-approved shelter.

Earlier this year, CorePlus merged with the Connecticut Community Credit Union Inc., increasing it s member sh ip a nd a sset s substantially. Recently, Alexis Ann sat down with President and CEO Nicholas Fortson to get some good news about this growing community financial institution.

A l e x i s An n: W h e n w a s CorePlus Credit Union founded and by whom?

Nicholas Fortson: CorePlus star ted on March 30, 1936.

Tw e n t y - s e v e n p e o p l e g o t together at the Wauregan Hotel in Norwich and decided to form a credit union. They raised 15 dollars and started the Norwich Connecticut Teachers Federal Credit Union. A teacher named El i zabeth Beck ley was the president. So CorePlus started as a teachers' credit union, only two years after president Franklin Delano Roosevelt created the Federal Credit Union Act. It was a tough time for teachers because their pay was very low at the time. The average person couldn't get credit. Credit unions were designed to help people get credit and to help people save money for the future.

requirements for becoming a member?

Nicholas: To be a member, you must live, work, or worship in New London or Windham counties.

Alexis: What’s the difference between the credit union and a bank?

Nicholas: The main difference is a credit union is not for profit and is owned by its members, designed specifically for its members. On the other hand, a bank is owned by the shareholders.

Alexis: What are the benefits of joining CorePlus?

Ni c h ol a s: C o m p a r e d t o other institutions, credit unions typically have lower rates on loans. We do thousand-dollar loans every day. Some people can't pay their oil bill in the winter and might need a loan for that. Or they might need to get new brakes on their car.

On the other hand, commercial banks are more interested in big loans, like for a $5-million apartment building. We deal with individuals. We do mortgages and car loans. We did lots of car loans last year. We changed our software so that we have a new pipeline with dealers.

Alexis: How many members do you have currently?

Nicholas: We now have about 26,000 members. The credit union we recently merged with had 3,000 members and $2 million in assets. Our assets are $235 million today.

Alexis: Are savings federally insured?

Nicholas: Yes. Al e x i s: W h a t i s y o u r background?

Nichol a s: I g r e w u p i n B u f f a l o , N Y a n d we nt t o college in Valparaiso, Indiana, majoring in accounting. My wife was from Michigan and went to law school. We moved to Detroit and I worked in a bank there. I got my CPA and went back to the bank to work as an auditor.

I became the Chief Financial Officer and President. I later spent four years in the restaurant business in South Africa. I didn't know anything about the restaurant business but I'm an entrepreneur and like to take risks! If it works it works and if it doesn't, you change it. I'm glad to be back with a financial institution. I like business and I also like the community.

Alexis: What do you like best about your job?

Nicholas: I'm a people person!

I like providing job opportunities for young people. A young person comes in, we train them, nurture them, and provide a healthy environment to come to work. I love to see them stay because they like the environment and move up through the ranks. If our team members feel good about coming here, they're going to treat our customers like gold. I tell them when they do a good job. I have a very entrepreneurial spirit, so I like to motivate people. If they are happy, my business will be successful!

Hog Wild for PNC Benefit

by Anna Trusky n Sunday, September 22, the first “Hog Wild for PNC” f undraiser will be held at Stone Acres Farm in Stonington to benefit the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center. The family-friendly event will include a pig roast, hamburgers, hot dogs, side dishes provided by local restaurants and supermarkets, farm tours, cooking classes, music, games, and lots of old-fashioned fun!

“Stone Acres has a mission of educating people on how to grow food and eat healthfully,” explained Susan Sedensky, Exe cut ive Di re c tor of t he Pawcat uck Neig hborhood Center. “They hold cooking classes and have done some classes here.”

One of the PNC's primary missions is to provide food for people who are homeless or residing in Stonington, North Stonington, and Westerly. “We have more than 1,400 people who regularly use our food pantry,” Susan explained. “We have a food van that goes out to local supermarkets every day to collect foods such as produce and bread that they no longer need. We also have our own garden and receive food from other people's gardens.”

“We decided to have a pig roast because it's a type of food not many people have had,” she explained. “It will be a real traditional, backyard family event. We want all our clients and the community to come!

Rhode Island Celebrates Victory Day over Japan

by Anna Trusky mperial Japan's surrender to the United States in 1945 is one of the most important events in modern history, for it brought an end to World War II. The day was August 15 in Japan, but due to time-zone differences, the surrender was announced on August 14 in the United States, so that became known as “Victory Over Japan Day,” or “V-J Day.” Incredibly, Rhode Island is the only U.S. state that recognizes this day as an official holiday; it is known as “Victory Day” and celebrated on the second Monday of August.

At noon on August 12, under sunny blue skies, veterans from World War I I, Korea, Viet nam, a nd t he Gul f Wars gathered at the Westerly War Memorial for a solemn Victory Day ceremony. The Veterans of Foreign Wa r s P o s t 8 9 5 5 , t h e D i s a b l e d American Veterans Josiah F. Branford Chapter, and Project Outreach, a local organization dedicated to helping ve t e r a n s o b t a i n n e e d e d b e n ef it s , organized the event, led by Ed Liguori and Walter K imbal l, Korean War Veterans who are Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively of the Westerly Veterans Memorial Committee. Local dignitaries were in attendance and the Resident owner and publisher Alexis Ann, herself an Army veteran, was the mistress of ceremonies.

Westerly Town Council President C h r i s D u h a m e l welc o m e d a l l i n attendance. “This is a time of reflection of what the sacrifices our World War II veterans did, and all the veterans who are part of the fabric of our town. The town council wants to give you extreme gratitude for the freedoms you have guaranteed for us,” he said.

Walter Kimball, Korean War veteran and member of the Westerly Veterans War Memorial Committee, attended the ceremony. who led the assemblage in a heartfelt “Pledge of Allegiance,” surrounded by f lags waving in the gentle breeze.

Ray Blanda, Past State Commander of the Department of RI VFWs, gave the invocation; Alexis then requested a reverent moment of silence and gave a special salute to the Westerly veterans of World War II, our Greatest Generation.

“You here today who served know well that World War II was a transitional time requiring sacrifice and communal effort rooted in patriotism. This was a battle for survival,” Alexis said.

She ack nowledged the invaluable contributions of the Navajo Code Talkers, who were responsible for many of our victories in the Pacific, pointed out the role of women in the war effort, and described how the official signing of Japanese surrender took place aboard the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945.

Al Almeida, a Westerly resident and Korean War veteran, spoke eloquently about the significance of the day. “The Pacific War involved land, air, and sea battles with very high casualty rates. The war was brutal and the war was savage,” he said. “The highest award for bravery in combat is the Medal of Honor; there were a total of 27 awarded for the Battle of Iwo Jima. That was the highest for any battle in World War II. “They were victorious because they gave their all for the nation they loved,” Al continued. “A total of 108,500 made the supreme sacrifice in the Pacific. We stand tall that Rhode Island is the only state that saw fit to declare this holiday.

Let us never forget that freedom isn't free. God bless America!”

he East Lyme Public Tr u s t Fo u n d a t i o n recently recognized Dr. Robert DeSanto for his 25 years of service in working to create the Niantic Bay Boardwalk and Beach at a celebration and band concert hosted by the Foundation at McCook Park Pavilion on July 26. Officials from the town of East Lyme, the Connecticut State Legislature, and the US Senate awarded cer tif icates highlighting his contributions to the community in achieving this incomparable community attraction.

In 1994, Dr. DeSanto was the Foundation’s first president, and then served again from 2003 to 2014. Dr. Joseph Legg, former President of the Foundation, described him as the “Godfather” of the Boardwalk based on his long-term devotion to completing the project, which first opened in 2005, closed in 2006 after storm damage, re-opened partly in 2013, and finally was completed and re-opened in 2016.

Battle Remembrance

T

he Friends of Fort Gr iswold will hold a candlelight ceremony commemorating the 1781 Battle of Groton H e i g h t s o n S u n d a y, September 1, at Fort Griswold in Groton. The ceremony will be held Col. William Ledyard died on this spot inside the Fort at 6:00 PM. on September 9, 1781.

The Friends will place 88 luminaria on the Fort grounds, each representing a casualty from the Battle of Groton Heights. As the name of each slain defender is read, a candle will be extinguished. The Sons of the American Revolution will lay a wreath on the spot where Col. William Ledyard was killed with his own sword, and fire a three-volley musket salute.

The ceremony will be free of charge and the public is encouraged to attend. In the event of rain, the event will be cancelled. If you plan to attend, please bring your lawn chairs.

This will be the 24th Commemoration and Memorial Wreath Laying since the 19th century custom was revived by the Friends of Fort Griswold in 1995.

Seinfeld Returned to Foxwoods Local Author Signs New Book photo & story

by Anna Trusky ystic resident Jean Lazar is thrilled to be having a signing of her new novel The Spa Conspiracy at Bank Square Books in Mystic on Saturday, August 31, from 1:00 until 3:00 PM. Jean, a massage therapist who also works as a hospice complimentary therapist, was inspired to write the book when she learned about what life is like for her colleagues who, unlike Jean, work for large, corporate-owned spas.

“The most compelling aspect of the book is the close friendships that arise among the three protagonists, who are massage therapists working in luxurious spas on the East and Mystic resident Jean Lazar will sign copies of her novel West Coasts,” Jean explained.

The Spa Conspiracy at Bank Square books in Mystic on “They take the reader behind Saturday, August 31. the scenes to see how the corporate spa world really works—the good, the bad, and the ugly. They become like sisters. The book is really about the strong bonds that form between women.”

One aspect of the book readers will find fascinating is Jean's account of the history of massage therapy—from the “rubbers” of the 1600s who did hands-on therapy to help people recover from surgery to the advent of Swedish massage in the late 1800s, on to today.

“For the first few hundred years massage was all done for health benefits. In the 1960s and 1970s, however, massage was demonized. Massage schools were closed down,” Jean pointed out.

This was due to the proliferation of businesses that opened ostensibly as massage parlors but offered “other” services.

“Then in the late 1980s and 90s, massage came back as a practice for healing.

More schools opened again. Massage therapists study for years, learning anatomy and physiology,” she said.

“Reading this book will take you into an alternate reality where your mind and spirit will open up to a different perspective. This tale will make you laugh, cry, and wonder if any of this could really happen,” Jean said. “At the very least, you will be entertained!”

Jean is also an artist/painter, teacher, and Reiki practitioner. She worked for 30 years as an industrial designer and illustrator. dynamics that the entire audience related to. His monologue touched on "the life and death" dependence we have with our phones, texting instead of talking to our friends and coworkers and an overwhelming reliance on the power remaining on our phones. At one point, he fell to the stage floor simulating his cell phone power dying.

He continued the monologue with how everyone doesn't really want to be anywhere, they always want to be somewhere else. This included an excerpt about travelling to illustrate his point, "Does everyone have their tickets, How are we getting to the airport? What time should we leave? Where should we eat? How much longer is the flight? When are we going home?"

Seinfeld, who lives in New York City, said he doesn't care about the weather, it doesn't matter to him since he lives in the nation's largest city. He then went onto explain how "dangerous" the married and family life is.

"I talk to my single friends, of which I only have very few, and compare their dating lives to playing wiffle ball, while married life is complicated like war in Afganistan."

He explained how he truly does not say how he really feels about things, realizes no one really misses him when he's out golfing, and lightens his tone on everything he says at home. He of course, is happily married to his wife with three children.

His u n ique deliver y included an incredible flow of material, one hilarious comment after another that had the audience continously laughing.

he 18th A nnual Red Lobdel l Regat ta was held on Saturday, July 2 7 t h . Tw e n t y- e i g h t b o a t s competed across six classes on a beautiful day with an SSE wind at 5-7 knots. There were three racing circles; Big Boats– around Fishers Island (ECSA points race), Medium Boats (which included the Watch Hill 15s) outside the outer breakwater and Small Boats which competed inside the Stonington Harbor. The race was held at t he Ston i ng ton Harbor Yacht Club and organized by a committee consisting of Kevin Bowdler, Tom O’Connell, and Spi ke Lobdel l. PROs were Sarah Starkweather, Wayne Buchanan, and Joe Williams.

Af ter the race, par ticipants joined friends and competitors at the Clubhouse for a traditional pig roast. Joe Williams, SHYC Commodore commented that ‘this event continues to grow. A great time was had by all on and off the water. We look forward to

A Month of “Peace, Remembrance, Hope”

W

esterly-Pawcatuck is proud to be counted as an International City of Peace. In September, the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly (ACGOW ), the Westerly Library and the Savoy Bookshop and Café will host a number of events in celebration of peace and in honor of those who fought, died in, and survived WWII. The events are collectively called “Peace, Remembrance, Hope.”

September 1 marks the 80th commemoration of the beginning of WWII, an event that changed the world, and the memory of which remains a stark reminder of the fragile nature of peace and freedom.

All are invited to the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly (at The Westerly Train Station) to workshops on September 1st and September 21st (International Day of Peace) from 11AM-1PM in which the public will participate in making Peace Cranes and Peace Flags.

During the month of September, gallery members and visitors will endeavor to make 1000 peace cranes as a wish for world peace. The project ref lects the Japanese tradition, which holds that whoever makes 1000 cranes will have their wish granted. The 1000 Peace Cranes will become an installation exhibit in the Gallery. Concurrently, the public is also invited to make peace flags, a tradition

that finds its roots in the 2000-year-old Tibetan Prayer Flag custom. Supplies and instructions will be available for cranes and flags and participants are asked to make one for the gallery and one to take home. These workshops are free and open to the public.

With i n the Galler y, a r t ist and adjunct members will present a special peace-themed show with works created specifically for the month’s events.

On September 24th at 7 PM, Savoy Bookshop & Café will present a World War II historical f iction discussion featuring James R. Benn and Beatriz Williams. ward-winning actress Christine Baranski will receive the 4th annual Spirit of Katharine Hepburn Award on Saturday, August 24, at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center’s 10th anniversary Gala.

Affectionately known as The Kate, the Center presents the award each year to an individual who embodies the spirit, independence, and character of the legendary actress.

One of the entertainment industry’s most honored actresses, Christine Baranski is an Emmy, two-time Tony, Screen Actors Guild, Drama Desk, and American Comedy Award winner. A graduate of the Christine Baranski will receive the 4th Juilliard School, Baranski received her annual Spirit of Katharine Hepburn big break in Tom Stoppard’s hit Broadway Award on Saturday, August 24, 2019 comedy The Real Thing, directed by Mike Nichols, for which she won a Tony Award and Drama Desk Award.

Baranski went on to earn a second Tony Award for her performance in Neil Simon’s Rumors. She also won an Emmy, American Comedy and SAG Award for her role in the hit series Cybill, in addition to three subsequent Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. She received a total of five Emmy nominations for her guest roles on Frasier and The Big Bang Theory. As the formidable “Dian Lockhart,” Baranski received six Emmy nominations and two Critics’ Choice Television Award nominations on CBS’s The Good Wife. She currently stars as the main character in the critically acclaimed spinoff The Good Fight on CBS. 1. Heat 1 teaspoon of the oil in a wok over high heat until shimmering. Add the carrots and celery and stir-fry for 3 minutes.

Add another 1 teaspoon oil, then add the chicken. Stir-fry for 5 more minutes.

by Michael Rouleau ith headphones pressed over her ears, the one-person audience peers in through a slot in a box and waits for the show to start. Music buzzes through the headset, the curtain rises, and a miniature set is revealed. A cast of puppet characters comes to life and takes the audience on a journey. Two minutes later, the curtain closes, the show is over.

This is Lambe Lambe, a form of miniature theatre that took place at Eastern Connecticut State University during the month of July.

Puentes al Futuro (Bridges to the Future) is the Center for Community Engagement's (CCE) annual summer camp for local middle school kids. In recognition of Willimantic's Hispanic community, the educational program spotlights Latin American culture.

This year's theme was Lambe Lambe.

N YC-based puppeteer and actor Harrison Greene demonstrated the art form and led the group of 27 middle schoolers through workshops on the Eastern campus. Greene participated in an international festival with the group Payasos con Ropa de Calle (Clowns with Street Clothes), a group of performers based in Puerto Montt, Chile, dedicated to spreading Lambe Lambe storytelling.

South America," explained Greene. "The whole show is contained in a small box with a peephole. It's a very personal, fully intimate experience."

CCE Program Coordinator Rose Hernandez explained that dreaming is a theme of Puentes al Futuro. "We want the kids to dream beyond their current circumstance and visualize their futures," said Hernandez, who helped establish the Puentes program eight years ago at Windham Middle School. "This is

why we hold the program every year on Eastern's campus."

The middle schoolers were asked to tap into their dreams. The result was a rainbow of colorful boxes and storylines.

"Everyone contributed something different to the project," said CCE volunteer Katelyn Root '19. "Some kids loved writing stories, others specialized in art. Every talent was used to create the puppet shows."

"Every day is a new opportunity to

teach an important lesson to the campers," said Forest Rappe '20, "and to relate to them my own experiences from middle school. Our campers are going through a difficult transitioning period in their lives, so I want to give them as much support as possible so they're happier and more successful in school this year."

After f inalizing the scripts, Communication Professor John Murphy helped the middle schoolers record the audio in Eastern's radio station. "A universal constant was how surprised they were to hear a high-quality recording of their voice - to hear what they sound like to other people." He added, "I loved seeing their spontaneity, their fearlessness and ability to act and play different parts."

The month-long camp culminated on July 25 with final performances on campus.

Dozens of family and community members gathered into a crowded and unexpectedly silent room in Mead Hall. Careful to not disturb their audiences–six performances happening simultaneously–the children intently worked their puppets as others shifted backdrops in and out of boxes.

"I'm blown away," said Greene with a tear in his eye. "My expectations are exceeded. It's exciting that Lambe Lambe is being exposed up here, especially in this community."

Jo-Jo was taken from his family due to an untimely death on Oct. 30, 2018 at the age of 42. At an early age he demonstrated a love and great passion for art and at the age of 10, he won the Town of Montville

Art Award and his skills progressed and were perfected through time. He was a self-taught artist and part of the Norwich art community and a Norwich postman.

His infectious smile and kindhearted personality warmed the hearts of those he came in contact with.

On May 11, 2011 Jo-Jo won first prize for his Abraham Lincoln pencil etching in “Enable06360” exhibit in Norwich. He received the People’s Choice Prize of $300 (given in all five-dollar bills) On July 19, 2013, The Gilded Edge presented “Portraits of the Animal Soul” at a fine arts exhibit of original works. “The innate beauty, grace and power of wild creatures come to life in a new summer exhibit at The Gilded Edge Gallery through the vibrant paintings and delicate drawings of self-taught artist Jo-Jo-Kolodnicki Jr.” On Friday, September 6, 2013, Jo-Jo was named Visual Language Magazine’s Artist of the Day. “I try to just focus on the beauty of the creatures who share the planet with us. They live a truly wild life and have no voice of complaint. They live a simple life, not planning ahead, but day to day. A picture is worth a thousand words. I prefer to just paint the picture and

“The images of Mr. Ruley are not very clear. So, I kept the style vague, choosing to give as accurate of an impression of the artist, as well as the feeling of the outdoors, sunlight, and vegetation. It’s very important that the focus be on the artist himself, and not get lost in the rest of the picture, so there is a large contrast of the background compared to him.

“Lastly, I chose the color blue, because on seeing it, the first response of many is to stop and ask ʻWhy is he blue?ʼ Hopefully, people will remember seeing Mr. Ruley’s portrait, because it was not what they were expecting, thus remembering the artist himself.”

The portrait of Ruley hung in the Norwich Arts Center Gallery during NAC’s Ce l e br a t i n g t h e A f r i c a n American Experience in 2018 and later in The Slater Memorial Museum when the City of Norwich Ellis Walter Ruley Commemoration Committee presented “Brought to Light: Ellis Ruley in Norwich.”

On ponds, former f ishing guide Ed Hughes suggests wet wading along the shore. When the water suddenly feels cooler on your legs, you probably have found a spring. Stop wading and start casting there.

Saltwater fishing is holding up pretty well, too.

“There were some bass mixed with bluefish at Valiant Shoal during night tides,” says Pat Abate of Rivers End Tackle, noting that anglers have been finding “a few bass on either side of the mouth of the Connecticut River, chasing small bait during periods of low light.”

Cod fishing has been very good, according to the skippers of the Frances Fleet. On one marathon trip, Frances Fleet anglers caught f ish up to 20 pou nds, along with several 15-pounders.

Bonito are biting, says Pat Abate : ”We have several reports of bonito at the Point Judith breakwalls and around Niantic Bay, Black Point, and Jordan Cove.”

Changing Your Landscape

Many gardeners missed or limited spring planting due to the weather. You can still add vegetables to your garden, mixed borders and containers. Just check the seed packets for the number of days from planting to harvest. Then calculate the number of days left in the growing season and plant those veggies that have enough time to reach maturity before the first fall frost. Leaf lettuce, radishes, spinach and peas are just a few to consider.

Late August is a good time to patch bare spots, overseed, or start a new lawn.

The soil is warm, air temperatures are starting to cool, and rain showers are often less intense. This means the grass seed will germinate more rapidly and the young seedlings will thrive in the cooler temperatures.

Fill voids in the garden with fall blooming annuals. These add color to the late summer and fall landscape. Many provide needed nectar for the pollinators, h el pi n g t h e m p r e p a r e fo r w i n t e r hibernation or their long migration home.

Look for nemesias, pansies, stocks, dianthus and other plants that thrive in cooler weather.

Plant perennials to add color and texture to your landscape throughout the year. Get the most out of every inch of your landscape by selecting plants

Interplanting bright yellow Swiss chard, parsley & imperial antique shades pansy creates a garden that provides both food and ornamental appeal. with multiple seasons of interest. Select perennials with colorful flowers, attractive foliage and seed heads that provide winter interest and food for the birds. Make sure you include a variety of plants to provide spring, summer, and fall blossoms for you, the bees, butterflies and hummingbirds to enjoy.

Survey your landscape and look for opportunities to use plants to screen unwanted views, maintain desirable lines of sight or create the perfect space for relaxing and entertaining. Remember to look up as you begin this process. Avoid planting trees and large shrubs under overhead utilities.

When these small transplants reach their mature size they can create a hazardous situation and require removal or severe pruning that leaves you with an unattractive plant.

residentAdopt-A-Pet American Staffordshire Terrier Adult • Male • Large • White/Cream Champion (Champ) is a 6-year-old boy who was recently rescued from an awful life. He spent his entire life in a small yard in Hartford. Never leaving the yard–he would come out early in the morning and then not go back inside until 9PM. He sat day after day alone in the yard. His only friend was the neighbor downstairs who would let him in and feed Meet Champion! him. When his "owners" said they were moving they said they were leaving him. So a concerned person worked to help Champ–she got them to surrender him and agreed to foster him.

Champ has been vaccinated for the 1st time in his life and he has been neutered and microchipped. He is heartworm / 4DX negative and has begun taking preventatives. He loves kids and would do well with a non-dominant/ submissive dog. He has a pep in his step–showing his love for his new life and that he knows he is safe.

Champion has really blossomed in his foster home–he is a clown–a goofball. He had never ridden in a car before and is now doing much better. He would make a great running partner and he loves to cuddle.

Don't let his "look" fool you–he is a big baby.

ver wonder who invented the first watering can?

W hen were small gardens numerous enough to have customers willing to pay for a better way to carry water to their plants? Historic records s ay t he f i r st was a watering pot made in about 1580. It was a container with a ha nd le a nd small holes in the bottom for the water to f low out. It was another 50 to 100 years before someone thought of adding a spout.

The earliest mention in print was in 1692 in Timothy Keeble's diary. Early watering cans were made of pottery, then zinc, brass, copper, tin and other metals. They were

bucket-shaped, then milk-can shaped and then funnel-shaped.

More recently, there were small watering cans that hold liquid in a round ball shape with a spout.

Twentieth-century watering cans can be plastic, tin or even canvas.

Eve r y sh a p e includes a round hollow part that empties through a spout with tiny holes.

It is called a "rose." It was the early 1900s before sprinkling cans were mass-produced and had a metal company's logo included on a tag or impression.

And small collectible children's tin sprinkling cans with colorful decorations were first popular in the 1930s.

• Put an LED pendant on her collar in case you need to take her out at night.

• Prepare her carrier ahead of time: Make sure it has a comfy cushion in the base (one that doesn't slide around), a favorite toy and a no-spill water dispenser.

• If your cat gets super-anxious

during car trips, talk to the veterinarian about giving her medication.

• Staying overnight in a hotel?

Search for pet-friendly hotels online.

• Never leave Frederica alone in the car—take her with you during stops and breaks.

• Call your parents and ask them to prepare a space for Frederica's bed and a spot for her litter box.

She'll settle in much faster when you put those two items in place as soon as you get there.

by Katie Clark Ingredients: 2 cups all purpose flour 2 cups Davis Farm cornmeal 1 cup granulated sugar 2 teaspoons fine sea salt 4 teaspoons baking powder 4 each eggs, whole 2 1/2 cups whole milk 3 ounces butter, melted Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Butter a 9x13” pan well.

3. Melt butter and set aside.

4. In a seperate bowl, whisk the eggs and milk together.

5. In another bowl, mix all the dry ingredients together.

6. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and whisk until combined.

7. Lastly, whisk in the melted butter until fully incorporated.

8. Pour into the prepared pan and bake for about 40 mins (rotating halfway through) until golden brow n and a skewer comes out clean.

Values to Live by!

by Roger Zotti sked by the Resident why he wrote his book, It’s Just (Dor rance), Norwich’s Rick Stewart said, “When my son was in second grade, he was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. I would see his struggles every day, so I decided to put what I saw into words. I wanted people to see what kids like my son go t h r ou g h eve r y d ay a nd hopefully I can make others understand better. Also, I want kids with Asperger's to know they are not alone and they can show people the book and say, ‘This is what it's like being me.’”

His book, Rick said, “began as a poem. Then I decided to make a book out of it and I wanted my

daughter Shannon, who's is a fine arts major at UConn, to do the illustrations.” (And her terrific artwork perfectly mirrors the mood of the book!)

W h a t R ic k fo u n d m o s t challenging about writing it was “how to put what I saw and how [my son] felt into words,” and that “sometimes I forget that he has Asperger's, then I remember what I wrote and step back and practice what I wrote. Every day is a struggle, but it does get better.”

Rick’s pur pose in writing “It’s Just” was “to reach out and help a few people, and then I’d feel the book did some good.”

And he succeeded because in a sincere and direct voice he captured the way a youngster w it h A s p e rge r’s Sy nd rome

“…I want kids with Asperger’s to know they are not alone” — Rick Stewart feels, understands, and thinks, because, for example, “I see things differently than you. / I see things that you don’t u n d e r s t a n d , a n d I d o. / I

remember the little things. / It’s just the Asperger’s in me.”

Reaction to the book “has been amazing,” he said. “I got a message from someone in Ok l ahoma who pu r ch a se d the book for her godson, and he cried when he got the book and said: ‘This describes me.’

Someone in Salem, CT bought the book for their son and said he reads it over and over again. My brother showed a lady he works with the book because her son has Asperger’s. She read it and immediately bought it for her son.”

Perhaps the key lines in Rick’s book, which is available at amazon.com are the last ones: “I’m just wired differently than you,/ I don’t want to be cured./ I just want you to accept me for me.

It’s just the Asperger’s in ME.” (Those words are echoed in the book’s sage Afterword: “Children with Asperger’s a re sma r t, sensitive, witty, and funny in their own way. esearch was repor ted that identif ied several differences in the progression and risk of Alzheimer’s disease between women and men, including newly identified sex-specific risk genes and contrasting presentation of Alzheimer’s biology in the brain. Two-thirds of people living with Alzheimer’s disease in the U.S. are women. The long-held view has been that this is due to women living longer than men, on average, but new evidence suggests that may not be the whole story.

Findings from Vanderbilt University Medical Center found sex-specif ic differences in the spread of abnormal tau protein, a toxic substance association with cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s.

The University Of California San Diego School Of Medicine found sex differences in levels of energy usage in the form of brain glucose metabolism. The University of Miami found sex-specific genes that are associated with risk and resilience for Alzheimer’s disease. Finally, in a large study of women, researchers from UCLA Fielding School of Public

Research has been revealed at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference Health found a faster rate of memory decline among women who never engaged in waged employment compared to women who participated in the work force.

Significant advances in the global search for blood test technologies for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias

were reported. New information describes methods for measuring abnormal versions of amyloid protein, which is the building block of one of the hallmark brain lesions of Alzheimer’s disease, in blood and correlating it with established Alzheimer’s markers. Two additional reports describe new blood-based methods for assessing alpha synuclein, which contributes to the brain changes of Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy Bodies, and neurofilament light, which may turn out to be the most reliable indicator of general brain cell damage.

"We are so excited about the new blood tests announced at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference that will help doctors diagnose Alzheimer’s disease early and pave the way for research to prevent memory loss," said Dr. Stephen Salloway, M.D., M.S., Director of Neurology and the Memory and Aging Program at Butler Hospital and Professor of Clinical Neurosciences and Psychiatry at Brown University. "This is a major advance we have been eagerly anticipating for many years."

ictoria O'Brien of Lebanon, a member of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's (GCSOM) MD Class of 2020, has been selected to present a poster at the 2019 Gold Humanism Summit describing their work creating, developing and publishing the newsletter, Grateful at Geisinger.

Grateful at Geisinger is a monthly studentrun publication celebrating acts of kindness and encouragement that occur within the GCSOM community. Students, faculty and staff may submit "grateful" messages that are shared in the newsletter to promote camaraderie and positivity. The purpose of the newsletter is to help students battle burnout. Research, including a study published by the American Psychological Association, finds that people who tend a list of things for which they are grateful exhibit increased well-being compared to participants who dwell on things that irritate them or even neutral things.

The researchers concluded that "a conscious focus on blessings may have emotional and interpersonal benefits."

The inaugural 2019 Gold Humanism Summitis an event of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, whose mission is to"infuse the human connection into healthcare" by engaging "schools, health systems, companies and individual clinicians in the joy and meaning of humanistic healthcare."
