by Alexis Ann he 60th Anniversary of the New London NAACP 57th Annual Freedom Fund Dinner was held last month at Port ‘N’ Starboard, Ocean Beach, New London, with Ayzel Morales serving as Master of Ceremonies. The program opened with a dance presentation by Lion’s Den and Rev. Gwendolyn Montgomery gave the invocation.

Tessa Rock, New London High School, Grade 10 student was the distinguished winner of Amistad Essay Contest 2016. In her essay, How the Amistad Story Helps Shape Our Understanding of Human Rights, she wrote about “Freedom. Equality. Justice.”

And, she stressed that, “Moving forward, looking at the lessons of the past will inspire and inform us.”

Keynote speaker Allan V. Chaney, born and raised in East Baltimore, Maryland, played high school basketball at New London High School. He was a three-year letterman at NLHS, averaging 26.0 points and 15.0 rebounds per game as a senior. He was ranked No. 64 in the ESPN Top-100 and made a commitment to play at the University of Florida

As a motivational speaker and ambassador for individuals with heart conditions, Allan understands that he needs to continue to share his story with the world to change lives, raise awareness and to help others who may be going through a similar situation.

in 2008. Later he transferred to Virginia Tech graduating with a degree in Apparel, Housing and Resource Management. Allan told his story of having to undergo heart surgery and having to sit out basketball while at Virginia Tech.

In sports, as in any profession, a champion doesn’t stay down for long. Cleared by the doctor to play again, Allan enrolled in Norcross Graduate School at High Point University where he starred on the court. After earning his Master’s Degree, Allan went on to coach at the University of Mount Olive where he helped them finish Top 10 in the country, win the regional title and appear in the NCAA D2 Elite 8 in 2015.

As a motivational speaker and ambassador for individuals with heart conditions, Allan understands that he needs to continue to share his story with the world to change lives, raise awareness and to help others who may be going through a similar situation.

Awardees were honored and include: Representative Ernest Hewett, William Cornish, Mashantucket Tribal Councilor Kenneth Reels, Barbara Brown and Sara Chaney.

Representative Ernest Hewett is a State Representative serving the 39th Assembly District that covers the City of New London. Rep. Hewett grew up in a small town in North Carolina called Cedar Grove and spent his childhood during the Civil Rights Movement.

Rep. Hewett was one of a small group of kids to integrate in the all-white Shallotte High School.

Bill Cornish spent eight years serving in the US Air Force before becoming a Real Estate Investor and Owner/Operator of Copperwood Grill, Cornish Parking and WMC Real Estate.

Bill served two terms on the New London City Council. His son says of him, “My father is my hero.”

Native Americans Make History In 1956, three years after graduating New London High School, Sara Chaney and Barbara Brown collected 85 signatures to charter the New London NAACP, under the direction of Sara’s grandmother, Sarah Dobbins.

Sara worked for the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center since 1988.

Barbara Brown is a native of New London and a graduate of New London High School. Barbara is married to retired Senior Chief Patrick H. Brown for 57 years. In 1956, Barbara and Sara Chaney walked throughout New London to collect signatures to begin a charter Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) New London.

he Mystic River Mudheads held their annual Benefit Cup Regatta and MegaParty in support of Center for Hospice Care on July 15-16. Over 60 boats set sail in light wind on three different racing circles for a total of eleven classes.

Thanks to the dedication of these sailors plus many volunteers, sponsors and donors, this event raises much-needed funds for Center for Hospice Care.

Additionally, funds are used to provide quality end-of-life care to anyone who needs it and meets the qualifications even if they are uninsured or underinsured, and unable to pay.

The fundraising festivities aren’t done yet! On August 13, the Niantic Bay Yacht Club will host their annual fundraising party to benefit Center for Hospice Care.

Under her direction, the DPNC opened its restored Coogan Farm property, a 45-acre expansion that preserves wildlife while showcasing Mystic’s natural beauty to residents and tourists alike. USS Springfield Returns Home

The families on the pier waited anxiously to welcome home the USS Springfield after its six month deployment.

by Josie Kapral ome people might say that the first steps on the moon were the most important steps one may ever see. One family on the USS Springfield might disagree with those folks. The Caldwell family won the coveted First Hug at the USS Springfield’s homecoming on Thursday, July 14th. Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class, Chris Caldwell watched as his 18-month-old son, Oliver Caldwell and his wife, Alexandra Caldwell greeted him on the pier for the first hug. This would not be the only “first” for this day. It

would also be the first time Chris Caldwell would see his son walk all by himself!

Also on the pier was an excited Lauren Hunt. She was the winner of the First Kiss.

She stood behind the gate holding her sign which read “HERE I AM! JUST LIKE I PROMISED!”. She was waiting for her boyfriend, Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class Austin Kliphon to make his appearance.

“I am just trying to keep myself from crying!” she said moments before they opened the gates. And just like the movies, the gate opened and they met each other in front of the submarine for the long- awaited first kiss.

After the first hug and first kiss, the rest of the families joined their loved ones on the pier. The families had waited six months for

this moment. During the six month deployment, Springfield steamed approximately 35,000 nautical miles or 40,285 statute miles, equal to approximately 1.62 trips around the world at the equator or approximately seven round trips from New London to San Diego by car.

“Springfield upheld the highest standards of the U.S. Navy, and I am proud of the constant, unwavering dedication of my crew throughout the entire deployment,” said Commanding Officer Myer. “Springfield’s tenacity represented the spirit of our nation and our service to the American people ensures their continued pride in the Submarine Force.”

a variety of menu options, including an extensive dinner menu, a lobster lover’s dream menu, as well as a small plate and apertif menu.

The choices were plentiful so we asked our professional server, Julie Hankins from Greene, R.I. to help us order. Julie has enjoyed working as a server at Al Dente for twenty years, which was apparent from the outstanding service we received. Not only was Julie incredibly knowledgeable about the menus, she made sure we were taken care of nearly every moment of our time at the restaurant.

We began our dining experience with three selections from the small plate menu. The Capesante Arangio, a spice roasted scallop with basil and orange, which was absolutely delicious. The scallop was sweet, with just the right amount of orange and spice. The Agnello Alla Grigilia, a spicerubbed lamb chop with tomato jam, was without a doubt the best lamb chop I’ve ever tasted! It was incredibly tender and cooked to perfection. Lastly, the Burrata cheese

Foster is the Leading Petty Officer, Pressurized Submarine Escape Training (PSET) Facility, Engineering and High Risk Training Department.

commanding officer, Naval Submarine School, praised Foster’s “outstanding leadership (as he) continually set the standard for 23 divers in his charge, resulting in zero discrepancies in the 2016 Naval Safety Survey, and an unprecedented perfect score.”

Capt. Thieme added, “He qualified as control officer of the Submarine Escape Trainer, a qualification normally reserved for Chief Petty Officers and above. And showing exceptional technical knowledge and mentoring skills, he supervised six

personnel during three Master Training Specialist (MTS) Qualification Boards and an Instructor of the Quarter (IOQ) Board that resulted in the qualification of 15 MTS candidates and 2 IOQs.” Foster received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (Gold Star in lieu of Fifth Award) and was presented with a commemorative plaque honoring his accomplishment by George Hyland of the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 20.

left a deep impression, not just in the minds of fans in attendance, but also in the roof of Mystic Little League Commissioner Jeff LaLima’s Cadillac, which now sports a casaba melon sized dent.

But Jason wasn’t finished just yet, nor were the other “Bash Boys.” Both Mystic and perennial winner Waterford had breezed through their district tournament brackets undefeated, setting up a classic two-out-of-three championship series. In the penultimate contest, Mystic won a tense match that

carried into overtime, with Jeffrey LaLima’s seventh inning clutch two-run homer leading the team to victory. Then it was game, set, and match as Jason Erb delivered the coupe de grace in the finale with a dramatic walk-off home run.

And so it was off to their Section Championship series in Killingworth. In their first game Mystic easily handled an overmatched Hartford team, 141. In the second contest, against a tougher Coginchaug squad, Mystic was down a run in the fifth inning, when Ramiro Zavala provided the drama with an opposite field game-tying home run. This set the stage for more heroics in the final stanza as Ryan O’Connor and Cam McGugan delivered back-to-back ringing doubles for another exciting walk-off win.

Only a victory away from the state championship tournament next week in Manchester, there’s definitely something special about this team! The Resident is cheering for you, champions!

The second seeded Croat saved three match points in a tight win over Gilles Muller, claiming his seventh career title with a 6-7(2), 7-6(5), 7-6(12) win.

Each of Karlovic’s losses in the final concluded with a final set tiebreak, so it was fitting that he was finally able to claim the title in a dramatic 26 point tiebreak.

“After all these years when I was losing in the final…that makes it even nicer [now],” exclaimed Ivo after the match. “I was a little bit doubtful [early in the match],” he

admitted, with the nerves of his losses on his mind. “I’m really happy that I was able to [win the title] this year.”

On the other side of the net, Muller was appearing in his fifth career final, and his first in Newport. The 33 year old from Luxemburg is left still searching for his first career singles title, missing out on multiple opportunities to put the match away.

“Being so close to winning my first title and not winning, its tough,” Muller acknowledged after the

match. After fifteen years on the professional tour, Muller is optimistic about his chances, having reached a career high ranking of 34th earlier this year.

Karlovic and Muller were by far and away the two best servers in the tournament, so it came as no surprise that they combined for a total of 45 aces. The three tiebreaks were no surprise either, testing each man’s nerves as they went down the wire. It was an exciting finish to the only men’s tournament in New England and the only grass court tournament in the United States.

New London Notables and the Deutschland

Shortly after the completion of State Pier in 1916, the German Submarine Deutschland visited New London amidst tensions following the sinking of the Lusitania.

A

t their August meeting, The Friends of Fort Trumbull will present Deborah Donovan who will speak on New London Notables and the Deutschland. In 1916, right after the completion of State Pier, The Deutschland, a German merchant submarine, was the first ship to visit the new installation. Because of German Submarine warfare during World War I and the fairly recent sinking of the Lusitania, one can imagine the controversy such a visit would create.

However, a number of New London notables supported this visit- Former Congressman Bryan Mahan, the “Father” of State Pier, Mayor Ernest Rogers, Day Publisher Theodore Bodenwien, and Alton Miner, President of the Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Donovan will examine the attitudes within the community toward welcoming a ship flying the flag of an “Almost” enemy nation and the unintended consequences of that visit.

Ms. Donovan has an MA in American Studies from Trinity College.

She recently retired as Director of Economic Development and Marketing for the Southeastern CT Enterprise Region. She is the current Treasurer of the New London Landmarks and a member of the Thames River Heritage Park Transition Team.

She also serves as past President, Treasurer, and long-time board member of the New London County Historical Society.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, August 25, 2016, at the Fort Trumbull Conference Center, 90 Walbach Street, New London at 7 p.m.

The public is welcome to attend this free presentation. New members are always welcome.

A brilliant way to spend a day Participants line up to begin the 1500 meter Mystic Sharkfest Swim Saturday, July 9th.

he second annual Mystic Sharkfest Swim was held July 9, 2016. About 200 swimmers participated in the 1500 meter open water swim this year, starting at 8:30 am at Australia Beach next to the Mystic Seaport boat shed and proceeded upriver around the lighthouse to finish at the North Lawn at Latitude 41 Restaurant.

The swim is the second endurance event held in Mystic this year. The Hartford

Marathon Foundation and the Mystic Rotary Club conducted a half marathon and 10K race starting and finishing at Old Mystic Village on May 15.

The Mystic Sharkfest Swim was conducted by California-based Envirosports with the assistance of the Downtown Mystic Merchants Association, Seaport Marine, and Mystic Seaport.

Bait Abounds; Bass, Blues Biting

A

n abu ndance of baitfish is keeping the bass and bluefish bite popping as we approach the dog days of summer.

Schools of adult and small bunker have kept the bite active near Tom Meade the mouth of Author: the Connecticut “Essential Fly Fishing” River and nearby reefs, says Pat Abate of Rivers End Tackle in Old Saybrook. “There have been fish [bass] smashing bait along the shoreline from the Connecticut River to Cornfield Point if you can find them among all the choppers,” Pat says of all the bluefish out there. One angler told him there were “knots” of small bass off Black Point, “and they were suckers for well-presented diamond jigs.”

Reports of large stripers sent an armada of fishing boats to Southwest Ledge off Block Island recently, according to Matt Conti of Snug Harbor Marina, so he recommends less heavily pressured waters including the reefs and small rock piles off Point Judith, Matunuck, Green Hill and Charlestown as well as tight in to the southeast and southwest corners of Block Island.

Fluke fishing in Rhode Island is steady, Matt says.

He recommends the waters near the hooter buoy and the center wall at point, and the waters off Matunuck.

At Blo c k I sl a n d s e ve r a l large fluke have been taken near the wind mills.

In Connecticut, keeper fluke and many throwbacks have been biting off Black Point and Hatchetts Point, says Pat Abate.

Corey Blount of the Frances Fleet reports solid fluke fishing aboard party boats. On the weekend of July 17, about 120 fluke hit the decks of the Gail Frances, he reports, along with large black sea bass.

Sea bass and scup fishing is improving on the rock piles off Rhode Island’s south shore, says Matt Conti.

For shore fishers, it’s also improving at the West Wall of the Harbor of Refuge. In Connecticut, Pat Abate

recommends fishing for scup off Hatchetts, Black Point, Bartletts Reef and the Hens and Chickens.

Offshore fishing is beginning to pop. Matt Conti says the bluefin bite began on the weekend of July 17 for trollers at the Gully and Tuna Ridge. Blue sharks have been biting at the Mud Hole and Sharks Ledge.

Mako sharks and threshers have been in deeper water – near Tuna Ridge.

Not crazy about fishing but love being on the water? Try whale watching. It has been terrific, says the Frances Fleet’s Corey Blount.

Bob’s hearing suffered damage and when his four-year term of service was up, he was unable to continue his career in the Navy. “It was too bad,” he says, “I really enjoyed my time in the Navy.” When asked to name one of the highlights of his time in the service, he answers a bit sheepishly “Well, I met a lot of nice girls when I was in the Navy.” Bob enjoyed a career in electronics repair. He now lives in Canterbury.

124 Stonington children, 26 North Stonington and 85 Westerly children were enrolled in the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center’s Weekender Backpack Food Program for Children from July 1, 2015 – June 30, 2016. A larger number are income eligible. These are children whose parents have enrolled them in the federal “Free & Reduced Lunch Program” through their school system. From September to June, they are assured of a breakfast and lunch (free or reduced) at school, but not on the weekend. The PNC provides fresh, cold milk every Friday and enough food for over the weekend. We continue this program throughout the summer knowing that food insecurity increases for these vulnerable children when school is out.

nickerdoodle is and black and white medium long haired kitten currently fostered in Griswold.

He is approximately 14 weeks old. He has been neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. He also tested negative for FIV & feline leukemia. He currently weighs three pounds. At five weeks old, Snickerdoodle and the rest of his litter (and Mom) were trapped in Norwich, at a condominium development. He is very playful and loves to be held and pet. Snickerdoodle is good with other cats and is used to dogs. His adoption donation is $150.00.

We also have several other kittens from another litter trapped in Griswold available for adoption as well. Their names are: Wynken, Blynken, Nod and Herring.

My sister has been great, dropping in to feed and walk them, but her work hours are changing soon. I have to get a pet sitter, but I have no idea where to start. -- Sara in Dothan, Alabama DEAR SARA: Set aside some time and start doing research on pet sitters in your area, as well as reading up on common services they offer. And ask around at work and anywhere else you socialize: Word-of-mouth recommendations are valuable.

Pet sitters differ from dog walkers in that they go above and beyond a walk. They spend time in your home with the dogs -- from 30 minutes to overnight, if needed.

They give them food and water, their daily medication, monitor their well-being and provide any additional services that you agree upon. Some pet sitters offer longterm care in their home or facility if you’re away for several days.

Questions to ask your potential pet sitter include: How much does the service cost? Is the sitter bonded/insured? How many other pets does he/she sit for? Will the business owner be the sitter or will an employee or contractor do the job?

If so, how are they screened and trained? What happens if the sitter can’t make it? How does the sitter handle pet emergencies? You can find more extensive lists at Care. com and Pet Sitters International.

Contact at least three sitters and compare prices and their responses to your questions. That will go a long way toward finding the best sitter for your Corgis.

Speaking with Ray Uzanas

For Ray Uzanas, author of Faces and Places of the Deep South, “It is mostly the people of the Deep South that make the biggest and most lasting impressions.”

by Roger Zotti aymond Uzanas’ latest book, Faces and Places of the Deep South, was inspired in part by novelist and travel writer Paul Theroux and photographer Steve McCurry. “I sought to travel a mostly similar route and discover my impressions of the people and places of the region,” Ray told The Resident. “But I diverged appreciably from [them] as circumstances and opportunities arose, especially guided by people I met on route.”

Born in Hartford, Ray now resides in the Borough of Stonington.

“I was a chemist working in the industrial diamond industry before leaving the corporate world to pursue another world—writing, photography, and adventure travels,” he said. “Those travels have taken me to all parts of the world in search of interesting, scenic, and culturally diverse places.

My book, Faces and Places of the Deep South, combines my interest in people and places to present a modern view of America’s Deep South.”

Ray’s stories and photographs connect three interrelated themes, which are, he says, “The abject poverty of the deep South; its place as the cradle of the civil rights movement of a half century ago; and thirdly, the birth and legacy of blues music,

especially that emanated from the Mississippi Delta.”

His interviews, he stressed, with men and women, “black and white—and their stories—remain a testament to those turbulent times in America’s 20th Century history,” adding he hopes readers take from his book “at the very least a greater understanding of the people and places of this unique region of America.”

What was challenging about writing the book “was that the journey was taken exclusively on the backroads of the Deep South (South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas), and many of the towns are now a mere shadow of their earlier times.

Many are now decrepit, moribund places with little work for its residents and they seemed to represent a microcosm of the Deep South’s economic and social travails.

Being able to connect and speak with people whose stories were relevant to the past and present was a challenge, yet one that yielded extraordinary and interesting stories....it is mostly the people of the Deep South that make the biggest and most lasting impressions.”

Ray isn’t interested in making a profit from the book, “but to share its stories. good way to understand friendship is to review some characteristics of being a good friend. Before you can be a good friend to someone else, you have to be a good friend to yourself. Taking care of your own well being is a prerequisite to being able to assist others.

A good friend accepts others for who they are. There are people you like and those you dislike. Even the ones you like may have attributes you are not crazy about. No one is perfect.

You can’t change anyone else. If someone has enough positive traits, you should overlook minor imperfections.

Allow time for your friends.

Life gets cluttered with an endless stream of chores and obligations.

However, when you look back, you won’t remember all of the tasks you tended to. You will fondly recall those special moments spent with friends. Make your friends a priority. Most other things can wait.

Be there for your friends

when they need you. Take the initiative; don’t wait for them to ask.

Although it may be inconvenient for you, it’s worth the effort to assist friends in need.

Be a good listener. Ask how your friends are doing and then pay attention to their response. People will share both good and bad experiences. A friend might just need to vent. They may want to share exciting news. When facing problems, friends look for encouragement, a fresh perspective, or suggestions as to possible solutions.

Don’t be judgmental. Your friends are bound to do or say things you disagree with.

Everyone has their own perspectives which are shaped by their experiences. It’s impossible to fully understand where another person is coming from without being in their shoes. Sitting in judgment of others erodes friendships.

Seek to understand. Good listening skills help you do this. Your friends have different personalities and sensitivities. Knowing what to say and not to say is part of being a good friend. Conversely, antagonistic people look to say the wrong thing at the wrong time.

Have integrity. Your word should be your bond. As a good friend, others can depend on you.

You are there during good times and bad. It’s when times are tough that people know who their true friends are. There’s little value in being only a fair weather friend.

Seek to bring out the best in others. Be a source of encouragement rather than discouragement. Help people enhance their strengths while overcoming their weaknesses. Don’t be a constant

critic, it puts people off.

You are not in competition with your friends. You don’t need to impress them with what or how much you have. Friends are friends because of who they are.

People can be the best of friends across all social and economic demographics.

Don’t be jealous of what your friends have. Ironically, they may be jealous of you. The saying, “the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence,” definitely applies here. Jealousy arises from the positive aspects of someone else’s life. What we don’t see are the accompanying problems they have.

Although it’s important to be a good friend, you must still take care of your own needs and make sure you are OK. Assisting others to the detriment of your well being is self-destructive. You need a solid foundation in order to be a good friend.

Understanding what it takes to be a good friend enables you to recognize those who are good friends to you. Friendship is reciprocal. Both parties have to participate on a proactive basis. The quality of your friendships is more important than the quantity.
