Downton Abbey Comes to Stonington

T

he Stonington Historical Society Board of Directors and event organizers were at your service on Saturday night, June 25, from 6-11 p.m. What began as a bright idea of creative board member Vivie von Walstrom, became a very successful reality, raising over $60,000. The gala was sold out for weeks before the giant tent went up on the graceful grounds of Stone Acres Farm on North Main Street in Stonington. Stone Acres Farm was recently acquired and will open soon as a working farm-to-table source and venue open to the public and the new owners generously provided the site for event.

The Preview Cocktail Party was held the night before inside the Stone Acres home to honor benefactors of the Society. Dr. and Mrs. Robert Hayden set the stage for that party and acted as “upstairs service.” In their role they fashionably received guests in the gravel driveway as the 60 guests entered the elegant 19th century manse. Auction items for the next

evening were previewed in the parlor that included Viking Cruises in Europe, a penultimate tour of London by the former Lord Mayor of London,

other travel experiences, and art and photography by artists including Gray Park, George Savic, Tim Love, and Michael Melford.

At the gala the next evening, elegant guests arrived in costume reflecting the popular series Downton Abbey. True to the period, feather boas, white tie and tails, Scottish kilts, 20’s Dr. and Mrs. Robert Hayden set the stage for jazz club garb, and the Preview Cocktail party and acted as fashion–for ward “upstairs service.” “fascinator” hats decked the gala patrons. The costumes not only mimicked the production design of the series, they also reflected the elegant early 20th century history of the Stonington region. Her Majesty Queen Mary from England (circa 1924) arrived as a special guest to Stonington. Tiaras, white gloves, fancy footmen and butlers played their part. The evening began with a sophisticated demeanor and ended, as most good parties do, with a jam-packed dance floor with live music performed by the popular local band Rock ‘n Soul Revue. A ShopRite Baby!

yle Pierce, a resident of Salem, grew up in Norwich and graduated from Norwich Free Academy. Kyle began his career with ShopRite eleven years ago, working part-time as a high school student. With a scholarship from West Point in hand, his future seemed well-planned… but not-so-fast! After suffering a major shoulder injury, the scholarship was cancelled so that’s when Kyle turned his part-time ShopRite job into a career.

Today, Kyle manages the Produce Kyle Pierce Department at ShopRite Clinton and Produce Manager he’s just as enthusiastic as he was on his ShopRite Clinton first day of work at the Norwich store.

“I love working produce and I love working with customers!” exclaims Kyle. And, he especially likes the different seasons which our New England weather brings because it means stocking different produce. “I’m never bored in this job—what’s growing in the gardens is what I’m stocking my department with.”

“Quality is the major factor when stocking,” he says. Our warehouses send us top quality produce and we only stock the best!”

What does Kyle like best about his job? “I like working with the community and the happy atmosphere at ShopRite—a happy team makes for happy customers!” He attributes this positive work environment to the Capano Family, owners of ShopRite. “I love the family!” He explains, “If needed, they would give you the shirt off their back!”

Tanger Outlets At Foxwoods Awards TangerKIDS Grants

T

anger Outlets at Foxwoods announces three schools as this year’s recipients of a TangerKIDS Grant.

In keeping with their charitable mission to support the future of our children, this program is designed to award grant money to local schools in the communities where Tanger Outlet Centers are located.

Grants awarded this month will benefit local schools for the 2016-2017 school years. Two of the recipients are schools in New London County: Voluntown Elementary School and Griswold High School.

Andrew Meislitzer, a physics teacher at Griswold High School, wrote and submitted the grant application to update 20+ year old equipment in order to purchase all new digital equipment “that would allow students to achieve the knowledge in hands-on, engaged learning that would be relevant to skill sets much needed today.”

The Voluntown Elementary School strives to have a balanced literacy program in all classrooms. Alycia Trakas wrote

he Board of Directors of the newly established Thames River Heritage Park Foundation (TRHPF) hosted a ceremony to celebrate the launch of Water Taxi Service on the Thames River, Sunday, July 3 at Pier 7, Fort Trumbull State Park, from 3:00 to 4:00 PM. The taxi service will be operated by The Thames River Water Taxi LLC of Voluntown using two surplus US Navy launches acquired by the City of Groton, with structural and cosmetic work provided

by Crocker’s Boat Yard in New London. The boats underwent testing by the US Coast Guard in preparation for the start of service.

The planned daily schedule will begin with a 10am departure of the water taxi from Fort Trumbull State Park. The taxi will operate on an hourly loop schedule, Friday through Sunday, until mid-September, from Fort Trumbull, with

The basic charge for a round trip ticket (allowing disembarkation at each stop) will be $10 for adults and $5 for children 4-12 years of age and active Military members with ID. All day and season passes are also available. Children three and under will ride for free.

The July 3 ceremony celebrated the inauguration of long-anticipated water taxi service uniting the historic waterfronts of Groton and New London. The party also celebrated the “Opening” of the Thames River Heritage Park, the first heritage park in Connecticut, which connects, via the river, the many historic sites and museums in both cities. Fort Trumbull and Fort Griswold and the smaller museums, including

the Custom House Maritime Museum, Shaw Mansion, Nathan Hale Schoolhouse, Avery-Copp House, Ebenezer Avery House and Hempstead Houses are all encompassed by the Thames River Heritage Park, and together tell residents and visitors the stories of the past, present and future that link these historic communities.

The water taxi will provide visitors and residents an easy car-less opportunity, not only to visit historic sites and museums, but also to dine and shop on both sides of the river. Planned expansion of the service includes a stop at the USS Nautilus and Submarine Force Museum in Groton where a new dock will be installed. The landing at City Pier in New London will provide direct access to the National Coast Guard Museum scheduled to open in 2020.

‘Caddies Only’ Golf Tournament at Mohegan Sun

ohegan Sun Golf Club announced that it will be the site for the inaugural World Caddie Matches presented by Beckmen Law. This one-of-kind event will take place on Monday, August 29th, when more than 40 PGA Tour caddies from around the world compete in a one day, two-round “Ryder Cup-style” format matches. The morning will feature modified alternate shot matches, followed by singles in the afternoon. This unique, first-ever World Caddie tournament will be open for the public to watch, and some of the PGA pro golfers are also expected to attend to support their caddies!

Proceeds from the event will benefit K9s for Warriors, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing service canines to military veterans.

fans were treated to “Apple Pie”, (myself in the Kayem hot dog line) and the anticipation of a great game and a post-game fireworks show awaited all!

CT played well, coming off a weekend four-game winning streak road trip with the Brooklyn Cyclone (Mets) and were ready to put on a show. Game time arrived, 7:05, and the fastballs of Locke St. John, pitching for the Tigers, were trailing smoke! CT finally broke a 0-0 game open in the bottom of the third with the bats coming alive of Sam Machonis, Joey Havrilak, and Cole Baumi reaching base and scoring. St. John pitched six strong shut-out innings and the “red hot” Tigers held off Williamsport 3-1, for its fifth win in six games.

The post-game fireworks show was grand to watch, sitting on the tailgate of my trusty “ole” Chevrolet pickup, getting us to the game and back on such a fabulous 4th of July Day!

The only time there were sounds in this humongous room was when someone yelled ‘bingo’!

Black seabass and fluke have been biting along Rhode Island’s beaches, according to the skippers of the Frances Fleet. The day before Independence Day, anglers aboard the Frances Fleet boats caught seabass as large as 4 pounds and fluke in the 5-pound class.

For shore-bound anglers, Matt Conti recommends fishing for fluke at the Jerusalem State Pier.

The scup- and seabass-bite continues to improve at the West Wall on the Harbor of Refuge, he says.

If you have the mobility to get a boat up to Narragansett Bay, some very large scup and black seabass are awaiting. During a three-day fishing camp, organized by the Rhode Island Saltwater Anglers Association, several children caught large scup and seabass. Elise Beland, a thirdgrade student, caught doubles of scup and seabass, and her older brother, Reid, caught and released a 19-inch seabass. They were fishing with Roger Tellier about 400 yards off the lawn of the Aldrich Mansion in Warwick. The water was about 20 feet deep. The kids were using squid strips for the bottom fish; later, they trolled swimming plugs and caught small bluefish in Greenwich Bay. The waters off Buttonwoods Beach were the most productive.

Big-game anglers started to catch tuna during Independence Day weekend, according to Matt Conti. They were trolling at the 30 Fathom Line, the CIA Grounds and near the southeast corner of Cox Ledge. Matt says. Tuna Ridge and The Horns have been holding blue and mako sharks.

by Indigo Eve Cohen oe Anderson, originally from El Paso, TX, came to the Coast Guard Academy in New London in 1957. His father had served in the Coast Guard during WWII and he encouraged Joe to join. “I had always wanted to be a member of the military but I wasn’t really sure about the Coast Guard. I had never seen a body of water bigger than a swimming pool but I learned to love the sea” says Joe. “It turned out to be the right decision.”

After graduating from the Coast Guard Academy in 1961, Joe was assigned to a buoy tender, the USCGC Gentian (WLB-290),

out of Galveston, TX. As an ensign, he patrolled the Gulf of Mexico, tending to aids in navigation and performing search and rescue missions. After two years, he was assigned as commanding officer of the USCGC Cape Hedge (WPB95311), a patrol boat out of San Francisco, CA. He spent a year performing search and rescue duties in the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

“Paint-by-Number” pictures were originally produced by Max Klein, an engineer and owner of the Detroit-based Palmer Paint Company, and Dan Roberts, a commercial artist. The first examples issued in 1951 under the Craft Masters brand were an immediate success. Each kit had a picture board with light blue or gray-lined areas that were numbered to match certain colors.

In recent years, many of these paintings have popped up in shops and at antique malls, mostly priced in the $25-$35 range. During the 1950s and ‘60s, more than 12 million of the kits were sold..

More Landmarks You Must Visit

by Roger Zotti esearching local history isn’t a chore for author and illustrator Constant Waterman aka Matthew Goldman, and he clearly did a huge amount for his latest book, More Landmarks You Must Visit in Southeast Connecticut (Ingram Spark). “I enjoy research—even when I can’t find what I’m looking for,” he told The Resident. “Then it means making time to visit local historical society archives or contacting some ancient citizen who remembers.”

His hope is, he added, that “More Landmarks” “will inspire its readers’ curiosity about and admiration for our lovely region.”

What prompted Constant to write “More Landmarks”—for

which, of course, he did the richly detailed and excellent art work—was “owing to all the feedback I received after the first ‘Landmarks’ book, such as ‘Why didn’t you include our church, or library, or sawmill, or town hall, or . . . .’ Also there are certain landmarks that posed a challenge to illustrate, such as the ‘Slater Museum’ (1854) in Norwich and ‘St. Clements Castle’ (1902) in Portland.”

One of my favorite pieces is “Uncas Leap” aka “Indian Leap.”

In it Constant writes: “Uncas, Sachem of the Mohegans, led his outnumbered warriors against 900 of the Narragansetts at ‘The Battle of the Great Plain’ in 1643.” The Mohegans chased the Narragansets, most of whom were

the precipitous gorge below the falls,” they didn’t surrender but tried “[leaping] the chasm.” With one exception they all fell to their deaths. Miantonomo, the exception, survived, though injured, and Uncas, who “made the terrific leap, pursued and captured his injured enemy.”

Asked by The Resident why he writes and what advice he has for aspiring writers, Constant replied, “I write probably because I’m not bright enough to pursue some career that’s more remunerative. Also, I like to see pages piling up. It’s similar to stacking firewood. My woodpile is now so high my house is no longer visible from the road.”

-Hanging On Dear Hanging On: This is the dilemma with dating someone who has recently broken up or divorced.

They are typically in a great deal of emotional upheaval, and even if they do commit right after they break up or divorce, they may not be emotionally ready to fully offer their heart to someone new.

The only way you’re going to know the answer to your question is to verbalize this dilemma to your boyfriend, and see if he can offer you any clarity regarding his readiness and interest in committing to you. That being said, he may not know how he feels about entering into another committed relationship right now, because he may have most of his emotional energy tied up in this divorce battle with his ex-wife.

So here’s my advice: Put your efforts into deepening the connection with him, and give him a full year to deal with what’s on his plate, how he feels and what he wants. After that time, if he can’t address the future with you, then you’ll have to decide if you’re willing to wait longer, or whether it’s then time to fish or cut bait.

However, if you need an answer about his future commitment right now, and you’re unwilling to wait a year, perhaps you choose the right guy—but the wrong timing. Then you’re going to have to determine how much you value a real, honest and strong relationship.

Ticks Loom In Our Favorite Outdoor Haunts

he year 2016 has been bad for terrorists and ticks, which is not too good for the human species. While the terrorists try to make us fear our transportation hubs and public gatherings, the ticks loom in our favorite outdoor haunts. Ticks generally are not involved in lethal attacks, but are quite able to inflict serious illness and general misery.

Ticks live on grasses and bushes and periodically hitch a ride on a warm blooded mammal who happens by, often us or our

pets. Once on the skin they find an area where they can get a meal, which involves a bite through the skin so the tick can draw out some blood for their nourishment.

Unfortunately, they are sloppy diners mixing their saliva with our blood, allowing the transmission of any germs they may be carrying.

Ticks can carry bacteria which cause human diseases. In our region the main illnesses are Lyme Disease, Babesiosis, Anaplasmosis, and rarely Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

(RMSF). In other areas of the U.S. ticks transmit Erlichiosis, Tularemia and STARI (a mimic of Lyme Disease). The symptoms of these diseases all overlap, and infection with more than one disease from the same tick is not uncommon. Most patients report headaches, neck stiffness, body aches, weakness, and fevers.

Rashes are characteristic for Lyme and RMSF and help early diagnosis, which means likely treatment success and cure.

The treatments for these infections requires proper diagnosis as well as completion of the recommended antibiotic. Prevention clearly is a priority action worth the effort. Proper clothing, repellants, and routine skin surveillance and pet treatments are straightforward and proven. Eliminate havens for rodents, who bring the ticks into the backyard. If you have a flu in our area in the summer, it often is not the flu, but a tick terrorist act.
