But, one event that is held before we welcome in our beloved summer season is Sails Up 4 Cancer Regatta and Wellness Expo set for June 18. The Regatta is open to all sailors and all classes. In tandem with the regatta is the Wellness Expo at Mystic Shipyard from noon – 5, featuring local healers from reiki to reflexology. Get the scoop on page 4.

NL Rehab and Care Honors Vets story & photo Indigo Eve Cohen n Wednesday May 25th New London Rehab and Care (NLRC) of Waterford held a ceremony to honor its resident veterans and unveil a veteran’s wall. Through a special Veterans Initiative Program the staff of NLRC has trained and worked painstakingly on identifying and meeting veteran’s needs, as well as assisting with veteran’s benefits and medal recovery. As a unique tribute they have created a veteran’s wall filled with photos, memorabilia and awards.

NLRC Administrator Mike Pescatello announced each of the center’s 12 resident veterans, whose service time ranged from WWII to the Vietnam War era. Representatives of the local Knights of Columbus, Elks, VFW and American Legion stood at attention as the Waterford High School Chamber Chorus sang the National Anthem. Proclamations and citations were awarded to the veterans by representatives from the offices of Representative Joe Courtney, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy and U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal. State Senator Paul Formica, New London Mayor Michael Passero and 1st Selectman for the Town of Waterford, Daniel Steward, also handed out citations, as

historic vessels and beautiful boats, visitors can find everything they need to outfit their own watercraft and learn new skills at demonstrations and workshops throughout the weekend. A variety of exhibitors will offer items for sale including maritime art, antiques, tools, books, nautical gear, and much more.

Throughout the weekend, Mystic Seaport staff and guest experts will be conducting demonstrations of a variety of boat-building skills, including rigging, caulking, steam-bending and laminating wood, lofting, plywood-epoxy boat building, and Japanese boat planking.

Other popular features are the “I Built It Myself” display of home-built boats and “Family Boatbuilding,” where families and teams work to build their own pre-purchased kits during the weekend. The kits are opened at 9 a.m. Friday morning and tools are put down around 3 p.m. Sunday, leaving, in most cases, a boat awaiting only final finish work.

A highlight of the 2016 show will be Hōkūle‘a, a Polynesian voyaging canoe from Hawaii which will make a port stop at the Museum June 23-28. The 62-foot catamaran is in the midst of a multi-year circumnavigation of the globe to raise awareness of Polynesian maritime culture and ocean conservation.

Hōkūle‘a is scheduled to arrive at Mystic Seaport mid-morning Thursday, June 23. Upon tying up, there will be a traditional welcoming ceremony involving the vessel’s crew and representatives of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal

Nation.

During her stay, she will be open for visitors to board during designated periods and crew members will be available to answer questions and discuss the voyage. In addition, crew members will be offering two technical talks on Saturday, June 25. Kaleo Wong will lecture on the science and art of traditional Pacific canoe navigation at 10 a.m. and Bruce Blankenfeld will present a demonstration on canoe lashing at 2:30 p.m. The crew will also team up with the Museum’s Planetarium staff to offer special shows on Polynesian navigation and the skies of the Pacific during their stay.

Roundtable Discussion Highlights Manufacturing Pipeline

n June 3, 2016, Cong re s sman Joe Courtney (CT- 02), Senator Richard Blumenthal (D – Conn.), and Senator Chris Murphy (D – Conn.) participated in a roundtable discussion at Grasso Technical High School in Groton to highlight the need for a well-trained manufacturing workforce, the importance of working together to secure future funding, and maintaining institutions to meet workforce needs. Welcoming remarks for the roundtable discussion were delivered by Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman. The congressional delegation members then joined the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Grasso Technical High School welding shop, which through a partnership provides hands-on training to students to prepare them for the workforce demands in the region.

“The roundtable at Grasso Tech this morning was a great opportunity to once again get all of the key stakeholders for the manufacturing pipeline into one place,” said the delegation members. “The discussion was focused on how we build upon the success of the first graduating class in order to make sure that we are training enough skilled workers to meet the growing need in high-tech manufacturing. discussion, leaders heard from Monica Bonner, 29, from New London who was a part of the first graduating class of the manufacturing pipeline program located at Grasso Technical High School. Bonner recently relocated from Arizona to Connecticut, and wanted to begin a new career after previously working as a truck driver, home health care aide, and in retail. She spoke about the benefits of this program for people who are looking to transition into a second, well-paying career in manufacturing.

Giving Back, Changing the World

(Andres & Blanton Publishing), begins this way: “One day in Africa, just after sunrise, / a boy and his mama were making their tracks. / Down through the simmering, hazy savanna, / they trudged with the sun on their giant-sized backs.” It ends with a query to the reader: “How will you change the world?”

Between those opening and closing lines the young boy elephant learns a priceless lesson.

After he complains, “I’m awfully hot! / Walking is boring, my trunk is too heavy, / my ears are for cooling, but guess what? They’re not,” Mama Elephant realizes it’s time for her boy to “look at life differently— / think of the ways that you’d like to give back.” Using her storytelling skills “to share examples of truly remarkable worth,” she tells him about how wild horses in Europe, pandas in Asia, squirrels in North America, and other animals “through this planet” go about changing the world. The lesson works! Her boy realizes that, yes, he can make a

and change the world.” Linda adds her first book “was an homage of sorts to my pets. The way they interacted inspired the story. In some respects writing the second book was easier because of the collaborative effort. Once we had the concept and the rhyme scheme, the book came together fairly quickly.

We thoroughly enjoyed working together on the project Asked both what she hopes readers will take from “How Will You Change the World?” and the age level it’s intended for, Linda says she hopes it encourages readers to “spread the word that each and every one of us has the power to give back and change the world.

Though it’s aimed at elementary-aged students, its picture-book format is appealing to young readers, as well. The subject matter and more complicated rhyme scheme make it interesting to adults who read it to them, and the charge to ‘give back’ is for readers of all ages.”

A Marriage Made in Heaven, Twice

by Indigo Eve Cohen t was 1965 when James Grider, along with his best friend Roger Schilling, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Jim did his basic training in San Diego and did a 13 month tour of duty in Vietnam during 1967-1968. Jim and Roger both survived the war and Jim was a Lance Corporal when he was honorably discharged in 1970.

After his service Jim returned to the St. Louis area. He had been home for about a month when Roger introduced him to a young woman named Mary Happel. Mary and Jim really hit it off and two months later they were married in a Baptist church in Edwardsville, Illinois. Soon Jim, Mary and Bill, Mary’s son from a previous relationship, were joined by new son James Robert. A third son, Ben, arrived in March of 1973. After a move to Kansas, the family welcomed a baby girl, Jennifer, in 1975. Jim had found work as a switchman with the Santa Fe Railroad and Mary started a dog grooming business.

Life was blossoming for the young family but unfortunately Jim, like many other combat veterans, had returned from Vietnam with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Many Vietnam veterans did not return to the honor and respect befitting war heroes, due to the political upheaval in the country and the acknowledgement and treatment of PTSD was still in its infancy. Like many of his fellow veterans coping with the distressing effects of PTSD, Jim began to self-medicate and eventually he succumbed to alcoholism.

The illness took its toll on the marriage and Mary and Jim separated in the late 1970’s, eventually divorcing. Jim moved to New Mexico. Mary moved to Killingly, and she took a job at Foxwoods Resort Casino, not long after its opening. Jim and Mary stayed in touch as friends and he would visit Connecticut for important occasions in the children’s lives, finally relocating to Connecticut himself.

In the meantime Jim was receiving treatment for his PTSD and his health was improving. As fate would have it, after many years of friendship and support, their romance was rekindled and for the second time, it was Jim’s best friend who brought it about. This time it wasn’t Roger. It was T-Bone, Jim’s beloved Chihuahua. In his move from New Mexico, Jim had been separated from T-Bone. A friend traveled with T-Bone under his airplane seat as far as Harrisburg, PA and it was the trip Mary and Jim took to rendezvous with him that Mary says marks the beginning of their new chapter as a couple.

It was St. Valentine’s Day 2016 when Jim proposed to Mary again and for the second time, she happily accepted. Oldest son Bill, an ordained minister, presided over their Easter Sunday nuptials. It takes a couple with a good sense of humor to make it through trials such as these and be able to find the joy in each other again. Perhaps this good humor is best evidenced by their latest wedding vows. “We said our vows in ’71, had three kids and thought we were done. Now it’s time to have some fun!” pledges Jim. Mary’s brief but eloquent response “Ditto!”

The product line has expanded into Mystic Market, eight Big Y supermarkets in Southeastern Connecticut, and several Whole Foods Stores in Massachusetts, where Elisa also has a home. The Mystic Marriott is now serving Livey’s Lavender Tea to its guests and restaurant patrons at Octagon. The products are also available online at www. noanknibbles.com.

Elisa is a “people person” with experience in the hospitality business, a dynamic combination that makes her a promotional wiz for Noank Nibbles (although one nibble and the products sell themselves). “Six months after the Mystic Hilton Hotel opened, I was hired as Director of Sales.

After serving in that position for several years, I decided it was time to raise a family and move back to Massachusetts,” she explained. “As my daughters were growing up, I created the lavender tea and several herb/spice blends. Over the years my products made their way into several local Whole Foods stores.

“Eight years ago, we decided to find a home in the Mystic/Noank area and settled in the quaint village of Noank. When I heard that a farmers market was being started in Noank, I applied to be a vendor. I named my business ‘Noank Nibbles’ and sold seven dried herb and spice blends, which people loved. Realizing she had quite a strong product line, Elisa talked with Sue Main, manager of the Big Y in Groton, and spoke with folks at the supermarket chain’s corporate office. Soon, Noank Nibbles products were on Big Y’s shelves.

“Our herbs and spices are sourced worldwide and are blended by hand to deliver fresh, enticing flavors without preservatives,” Elisa points out. “The blending and packaging are done by local students who are enrolled in the Life Skills program at Fitch High School in Groton.”

Motivated by a desire to give back to the community, Elisa worked with Groton Public Schools to create a Life Skills culinary program. Now students are producing, as well as helping

to sell, the products at various Big Y demonstrations and will be representing Noank Nibbles at the Westerly Farmers Market this summer. Recently, Elisa also established a Noank Nibbles/Groton Public Schools monetary award, the first of which was just awarded to a dedicated and deserving Fitch High School Life Skills graduating student.

“When you mean to do well, good things happen,” Elisa said.

“I’ve been blessed by the community and the community has given me a wonderful way to give back!”

Noank Nibbles will be at the Noank Village Farmers Market every Friday, 4:00 to 7:00 PM, July and August. The market will be in the village park area at 57 Main St. Noank Nibbles products will also be sold at several Fields of Green Farmers Markets in Groton and New London.

erra Firma Farm in Stonington, which has been feeding and educating local families in southeastern CT since 2004, hosted the grand opening of its on-farm creamery from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday June 4 at the new dairy house, 564 Norwich Westerly Rd, North Stonington.

Last fall, Terra Firma owner Brie Casadei launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the project that will bring her locavore philosophy to the next level opening an on-farm creamery that will produce bottled, 100% grassfed milk. More than 320 backers pledged $50,842 to make the project a reality. She launched the dairy plan with her partner Aaron Bulger.

All of the milk will be made exclusively from Terra Firma Farm’s Jersey cows’ milk and processed in their State certified processing room on the farm. All permits for the dairy are in place.

The first milk was made May 22.

In 2007, Jennifer meeting, Thursday, July was hired by the New London County Historical Society to research and portray Miss Jane Perkins, the last owner of 28, 2016.

Jennifer will be dressed in replica 1876 period-attire.

She will begin the talk in character, having “Miss Janey” talk a bit about her life and family. Then, she will switch to 3rd person to discuss her research on Miss Perkins, the costumes of the period, and the Shaw Mansion.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, July 28, 2016, at the Fort Trumbull Conference Center, 90 Walbach Street, New London, at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend this free presentation. by Anna Maria Trusky hen John Meers of Mystic saw that Forgotten Angels Sanctuary in Griswold needed some TLC, he knew he’d found the perfect subject for his Eagle Scout project. Now the 16-yearold Grasso Tech sophomore is earning the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America and a foster family of felines has a purrectly wonderful new space to call their temporary home!

It all started when John accompanied his mother Marlene and fourteen-year-old brother James, a Life Scout, to the shelter, where they volunteer once a week, helping to feed the cats and clean. “Forgotten Angels is a nokill shelter. They have a very low budget and really needed some repairs and improvements,” said John, who’s a member of Mystic Troop 2 and has been in the Boy

Scouts since first grade.

Forgotten Angels opened in May 2007 with the mission to care for residents, socialize and rehabilitate felines in need, and seek out forever, loving homes for them.

Over the last nine years, paint on the railings had peeled, the deck needed repairs, and the shelter for tabbies was looking pretty shabby.

“Our Eagle Scout project has to consist of more than just repairs,” John explained. “So I decided to repair what they needed and then add lots of new features to make life better for the cats.”

John’s final plan, for which he had to submit a highly detailed proposal to the Boy Scouts of America’s Three Rivers Council of CT for approval, included scraping and repainting the railings, fixing the deck, as well as adding indoor walkways, ramps, and hideaway caves, and birdhouses outside the “catio” to help keep

the felines entertained and happy.

Once John got the go-ahead, he approached local stores to purchase the supplies he needed. He was surprised and thankful when Johnson’s Hardware and Mystic Paint & Decorating Center gave him discounts on supplies. John, with the help of some scouts from his troop, completed the project during the second week in June.

“I’m really glad I was able to help Forgotten Angels and am happy to earn the rank of Eagle Scout,” John said.

Cathy Ordiway, who started up Forgotten Angels and still runs the shelter, is extremely grateful for John’s help. “Eagle Scouts have to do a service project and I am so glad he chose us,” she said. “John did a lot of work for us that has been needed for years. We appreciate it so much—and so do the cats!”

GRILLED WATERMELON STEAKS WITH WALNUT GREMOLATA

Cut 4 (1-inch thick) halfmoon slices of watermelon.

Mix vinegar, oil, lemon juice, rosemary, salt and pepper in small bowl. Reserve 2 tablespoons for drizzling grilled watermelon.

Place watermelon steaks in glass dish. Add remaining marinade. Refrigerate 20 minutes, turning watermelon after ten minutes For the Gremolata, mix walnuts, parsley and lemon peel in small bowl. Set aside.

Remove watermelon steaks from marinade. Reserve leftover marinade for brushing watermelon during grilling.

Grill watermelon steaks over high heat 2 to 4 minutes per side or until grill marks appear, brushing with leftover marinade.

To serve, cut watermelon steaks in half. Drizzle with remaining marinade.

Sprinkle with Walnut Gremolata.

ucks filled the Pawcatuck River on April 30, 2005 for the Greater-Westerly-Pawcatuck Chamber of Commerce’s Seventh Annual Duck Race. The winner of the corporate race was the Resident’s own Duck #71. John Stratton, reporter for the Resident, said, “Just look at the hard data: Duck 71 trained hard all winter, perfecting curves, dives and dips; glided more gracefully in the difficult downwind runs; and was just a bit more savvy than the other ducks.” The Lucky Duck brought a prize of $1500, $1000 of which the Resident donated back to the Chamber’s Trust for the Athena Scholarship Fund, $250 was donated to USET and the remainder was used to throw an employee party.

they’ve seen a lot of pressure. We heard of guys finding fish simply by avoiding other fishermen. Some of the reefs have had some fish, too. Plum Gut had some bass as did Bartletts and various reefs in Branford where there seems to be a fresh slug of small bait.”

Off Block Island, bass have begun to hit top-water baits beneath flocks of gulls and terns, says Chis Willi of Block Island FishWorks.

Elisa Conti Cahill of Snug Harbor Marina says trollers have been taking large stripers on umbrella rigs near Southwest Ledge.

The North Rip is productive, too, but the bass are not as large there, according to Elisa.

Fluke are biting off Black Point and Isabella Beach, but Pat reports, “If you’re serious, it still sounds like Montauk and Block Island are better bets.”

A bachelor party aboard the charter boat Harley caught lots of fluke, as large as 24 inches, says Chris Willi.

The first bluefish arrived before Memorial Day, and their numbers keep increasing. “They’re frustrating bass fishermen in the Connecticut River,” Pat Abate reports, “and they’re in Plum Gut, as well as a slug of smaller blues in the Millstone outflow.”

Sea bass fishing is very good in Connecticut waters, particularly in the western end of the Sound, near Guilford and Six Mile Reef. He cautions anglers that New York’s sea-bass season “doesn’t open until July 15 and Rhode Island doesn’t open until June 24.”

Because state boundaries can be confusing on the Sound, it’s vital to know where you’re fishing.

Before the game started, The Lady Schooners (Softball players ages 12 and under) escorted the Mystic Schooner Players to their positions. Kristin Hartnett, Manager of Sales & Membership, GMCC, and Facilitator, Laughworks: School of Improv sang the National Anthem.

The Mystic Schooners are a Non-Profit Organization and member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL). The NECBL consists of twelve teams located throughout New England with top players coming from the (l-r) Lady Schooner Finella Smith, (13) colleges all over the United States. Shakespeare on the Beach: Twelfth Night

The June 25th and 26th production of William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” will be set in a New England seaside town in the 1930s.

T

he Stonington Community Center is excited to again partner with The Glass Eye, a New York City production company, to present the 2nd Annual Shakespeare on the Beach events this June.

On Saturday, June 25th and Sunday, June 26th at 6pm join them on duBois Beach in the Stonington Borough for the event of the summer. The Glass Eye is led by Stonington-native and former COMO Kid, Kyle Metzger, who is eager to share his passion for theater with the locals of his

beloved hometown. This year will be the premiere of his new take on Twelfth Night, with music by Tim Duncheon. The take is quite fitting for our quaint little village, as the production will be set in a New England seaside town in the 1930’s. The production harkens back to the era of musical comedy, á la Cole Porter’s Anything Goes. With gorgeous nautical inspired costume design by Rivkah Spolin, and jazz age music by Tim Duncheon, this production pops with exuberance. A shipwreck, love triangles, mistaken identities, and a piano. The Glass Eye’s production of Twelfth Night has all of these and more!

Enjoy a picnic on the beach as you’re transported back to the era of the musical comedy in this inspired take on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. The event is donation based, with suggested donation of $10 for individuals, or $20 for couples and families the night of the event. All proceeds benefit The Glass Eye and the Stonington COMO. END LOCAL CHILDHOOD HUNGER 2016 For many children school vacation is not a welcome event.

Their breakfast and lunch are gone.

Eleven years ago, we began the Weekender Backpack Food Program for Children. This program provides fresh, cold milk, sliced bread, peanut butter and jelly, cereal, soup, pasta, tuna fish and fresh fruit and vegetables every Friday yearround, so that the weekend isn’t a time of increased food insecurity. We do this only with your help.

In FY 14-15, this program fed 288 children in Stonington, North Stonington and Westerly, from 147 families through the Weekender Backpack Food Program.

30,458 meals were given out. Milk alone costs over $6,600 per year. We greatly appreciate your help!

Renters have fairly extensive rights in most states. A new landlord usually cannot simply walk in and demand you get rid of your pet. The existing lease typically cannot be changed suddenly, either. And even if you don’t have a signed lease (some apartments are still “handshake” agreements) the landlord typically must still give

reasonable notice of a change in the terms.

You also might try offering your landlord a non-refundable pet deposit. These are sometimes required in rentals that accept pets.

There’s much more information out there than I have room to write about here. But basically, you have more rights than you think.

he New England Revolution honored Navy Officer Michael Adamson, f rom Naval Submarine School in Groton as the Hero of the Match at the team’s home game on May 28 against Seattle Sounders FC. Adamson was recognized for his service in the Navy, ranked as MMn1(SS), during a pregame ceremony. He has trained as a Nuclear Machinist Mate and has served on the Fast Attack Submarine, USS Toledo, for four and a half years during which he had two deployments. Today, he is passing on his knowledge as an instructor at the Naval Submarine School, Groton. He had a sideline view of the Revs pregame warmups and enjoyed the game from the Putnam Club.

Field of Greens Kicks off Season

T

he Field of Greens Farmers’ Market will kick-off its 2016 season this year on: Friday, July 1, 3-6pm at William’s Park at the corner of Williams and Broad St. in New London; Tuesday, July 5, 3-6pm at Washington Park in the City of Groton (NEW! - with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony); and Wednesday, July 6, 3-6pm at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital on Montauk Ave. One great market, three perfect locations.

The market will include a delicious harvest of locally grown, farm fresh fruits and vegetables and a variety of plants, cheeses, artisan breads and bake goods, eggs and meats, jams and pickles, honey and syrups, and much more! Local farms participating in this year’s market include Cold

Spring Farm, Smith’s Acres, Collins Farm, Deep Roots Farm, Whepittituck Farm, Sun Stone Farm, Farmstead Herbs and Goods Farm and Whittle’s Willow Spring Farm. The Market will also feature local artists, food vendors, musicians and authors.

Cooking demonstrations and samplings will be offered by a variety of local chefs and dieticians.

“Farmers markets provide a great place to taste and buy the freshest fruits and vegetables in New London County and our internship program, farm to fork program, Latino Ambassador and bus for seniors make us unique,” says Cindy Barry, Market Promotion Coordinator, Ledge Light Health District. “It’s also a place that everyone can access farm fresh fruits and vegetables, as we take WIC and Senior Coupons and

EBT/SNAP – we’re very proud of that!”

Ledge Light Health District in partnership with Thames Valley Sustainable Connections will also offer two special events at this summer’s markets: Family Day – July 26th at Washington Park in Groton and July 29th at Williams Park in New London, both 3-6pm, with special puppet shows, books, seed planting activities, and lots of activities for children and their families.

Senior Day – August 23rd at Washington Park in Groton and August 26th at Williams Park in New London, both 3-6pm, with demonstrations of fun leisure activities, such as basket weaving, tai chi, photography, and information on services for seniors.

Crazy Behavior

D

ear Neil: I am dating a man who has major trust issues and erratic mood swings. He’s bought me things that I warmly accepted, and then has accused me of being a user and thinking of him like he was an ATM machine. He’s thrown hurtful insults at me that will never go away. Although he has low self-esteem, he has tried to convince me that he’s the best man out there. When I moved in Neil Rosenthal with him, he told me he felt like Marriage and my prisoner, but every time I left Family Therapist (lic.) our condo, he wanted to tag along.

Recently he left me, and I stopped communicating with him because his angry words hurt me. But my retorts hurt him back, so now he says he can’t forgive me. I want him back. I want to believe it takes someone like me to love someone like him.

–What Do I Do? Dear What Do I Do: You are with a man giving you double messages. He wants you, but he can’t be close with you. He can hurt you, but he can’t tolerate being hurt by you. He can freely give to you, but if you take what he offers, he will accuse you of using him or of being a leach. He can’t stand being your “prisoner,” but he can’t let you out of his sight. He wants to live with you, and he equally wants to get away from you because he doesn’t trust you or your motives.

This is a man who indeed has very low self-esteem, and he is sabotaging what he also wants very badly. Nobody can succeed in having a close relationship with him this way. He won’t let anyone get terribly close before he pushes her away. So how intimate, attached and devoted a relationship do you think you can have with him the way things are right now?

So what do you do? If the two of you decide to get together and talk things out, confront him with these double messages, and set some ground rules and boundaries regarding what’s acceptable to you and what isn’t. How about if the two of you agree to stop leveling hurtful, angry words at each other? What if you questioned his invitation for you to move in with him, yet he felt like a captive when you did? How about his message that he’s the best man out there for you, but he thinks that gives him license to insult and demean you? How about asking for an apology for his hurtful words and alienating behavior—and an ironclad agreement about how future disagreements will be handled differently?

If he won’t agree to these basic rules of civil, respectful behavior—or if he agrees but fails to follow through--you will keep getting this “crazy making” behavior until you cut the relationship off with him completely. And then you will have learned that someone like you cannot love someone like him without completely losing yourself.
