CT Sub Trail Models Arrive in Groton

T

he model submarines to be displayed this summer on CT Sub Trail arrived at Fitch Middle School in Groton on Monday April 25th.

CT Sub Trail is the public art project of Connecticut’s Submarine Century, the yearlong celebration of the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first submarines at the United States Naval Submarine Base New London. Local artists have been chosen to decorate 20 submarine sculptures honoring the men and women who design, build and serve on the best submarine service in the world. The submarines will be clear coated, then picked up by artists.

Each submarine is approximately five feet long and four feet high. Sponsors have paid $5,000.00 to have the fiberglass mini subs displayed at their locations after the subs are showcased in the Groton 4th of July Parade.

Proceeds from the CT Sub Trail will go to USS Groton Sail Foundation, which is committed to providing a public monument dedicated to the men and women who design, build and serve on submarines.

A unique aspect of the project is the CT Sub Trail App, which will guide users to the location of each submarine. The Android/ IOS app will also provide information and interactive opportunities for each sub, sponsor and location.

The App will be released in June and will be available on the App Store and on Google play.

RSVP Veterans’ Coffee House Celebrates Anniversary

Over a year ago veteran Greg Kline, of the Thames Valley Council for Community Action, was tasked with developing a program for veterans through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). A veterans’

coffee house was suggested; somewhere veterans could come to socialize with each other and discuss common issues. The success of the program quickly became evident, as more veterans and volunteers began attending the coffee house and the bimonthly meetings were increased to weekly Tuesday morning meetings and monthly Tuesday evening meetings. A variety of guest speakers were introduced to provide information and

assistance with a broad spectrum of veterans’ issues.

Vietnam veteran Ambrose Smurra is passionate about the difference the coffee house has made in his life “It has helped me out so much; it actually changed my life. I’m a disabled Vietnam veteran. I was over there during the Tet Offensive. I’ve been home for 40 some years, living with the effects of Agent Orange. No one is going to come tell you what’s

wrong and how to get help. You have to make that first step.

The coffee house set me up with a program that helped me get my disability benefits. I want the veterans out there to know that you can do it, you just can’t do it alone.”

According to director Greg Kline, the coffee house wouldn’t have happened without the work and dedication of its veteran and community volunteers. As a part of the inaugural anniversary, four of the veteran senior volunteers were honored with citations from the Connecticut General Assembly. State Senator Mae Flexer, D-Killingly, presented veteran volunteers Charles Milewski of Dayville, Jack Tucker of Canterbury, George Brown of Woodstock and Meredith Kertulla of Pomfret with citations and thanked them for their service

and continuing contributions to the coffee house. Two additional veteran volunteers, Richard Dvorin of Pomfret and Linda Lee of Danielson, were honored at the evening ceremony.

The RSVP Veterans’ Coffee House will be shifting its schedule for the upcoming summer months. The evening gatherings will continue to meet on the second Tuesday of the month through May, after which time they will take a brief hiatus for the summer months. The morning meetings will continue to meet on each Tuesday morning at 9 am through the month of June, after which they will also take a summer break. Both groups are invited to meet on two Thursdays in July and two Thursdays in August, when the RSVP Veterans’ Coffee House will have a tent at the Davis Park Summer Concert Series.

aj. Gen. Thaddeus J. Martin, the Adjutant General and Commander of the Connecticut National Guard, announced two Connecticut National Guard units were welcomed home in a formal Freedom Salute ceremony at the William A. O’Neill Armory, Hartford, Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at 4:30 p.m.

The 143rd Regional Support Group, based in Middletown and commanded by Col. John Wiltse of Berlin, deployed approximately 35 soldiers to Afghanistan. The unit was responsible for commanding a diverse, multi-coalition organization of over 500 soldiers and civilians on a base comprised of more than 2,500 NATO personnel from 38 nations.

The 192nd Military Police Battalion, based in Niantic and commanded by Lt. Col. Paul Deal of Hampton, deployed approximately 55 soldiers to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in support of detainee operations, responsible for administrative, operations and training support while also conducting detainee movement operations.

The deployment of the 143rd RSG was unprecedented. Traditionally, a National Guard unit has 18 to 24 months to prepare for a mission, but an immediate need placed the unit, its soldiers, families and employers on a truncated timetable.

“The paths that led to these two missions were drastically different, but the results were the same: success from professional Guardsmen,” said Maj. Gen. Martin. “It is a testament to the hard work of the men and women who, for nearly a year, left behind their families, friends and careers. The results speak for themselves, and I could not be prouder of their efforts.”

Over the next several months, the Connecticut National Guard is preparing to host another Freedom Salute Ceremony for the men and women of the 1-169 General Support Aviation Battalion, who returned from Kosovo in March and the return of the 1109th Theatre Aviation Sustainment Maintenance Group, currently deployed to southwest Asia.

he Historic Ship Nautilus and Submarine Force Museum cont i nued to highlight Connecticut’s Submarine Century with a special lecture on “submarine medicine” followed by the ribbon cutting of a new exhibit on the history of Naval Submarine Base New London (SUBASE), Wednesday, April 27.

Retired Capt. Ray Woolrich of the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory (NSMRL) led a presentation titled “Submarine Medicine.” Ray provided an understanding of the term “submarine medicine;” explored medical issues of concern to submariners in their daily life under the sea; discussed medical issues concerning to Submarine Force leaders; and, reviewed the history of NSMRL and the role its research has played in submariner health and well-being over the years.

Mayor Marian Galbraith of the City of Groton; retired Rear Admiral David Goebel,

President of the Submarine Force Library and Museum Association; and Capt. Paul Whitescarver, Commanding Officer of SUBASE, cut the ribbon on the museum’s new exhibit honoring “Connecticut Submarine Century” and the centennial of the base and its submarine school.

The exhibit begins with the creation of the New London Navy Yard in the 1860s and ends with the submarine base and school of present day.

Featuring photographs and objects from the museum’s collection that capture how personnel and families worked, played, learned, and lived throughout the history of the base, the exhibit also highlights major historic events that took place there.

The Historic Ship Nautilus and Submarine Force Museum are free and open to the public.

The Mohegan Tribe celebrated a major milestone for its $130M Earth Hotel at the construction site. In celebration, the final piece of glass was lifted by a heavy-lift crane and placed on the hotel symbolizing the completion of the hotel’s exterior.

Ray Pineault, President and General Manager, Mohegan Sun, welcomed all guests in attendance including Mohegan Tribal Council members, Council of Elders and Town Officials Montville Mayor Ronald McDaniel, Joe Jaskiewicz, Chair, Montville Town Council, and East Lyme First Selectman Mark Nickerson. “Once this piece of glass is placed on the tower today, we will only be six short months away from opening the much needed and much anticipated, 400 additional guest rooms here at Mohegan Sun. I can say on behalf of our executives, Tribal Councilors, Mohegan Sun Team members and so many others that have made this all possible, that it really is one of the most exciting projects we’ve undertaken and will allow for Mohegan Sun to plan further expansions in the future.”

Modeled after the existing Sky Hotel design, the Earth Hotel reflects the Tribe’s sensitivity to the natural landscape and it pays homage to the geological and natural forms present on the property’s riverfront site. The hotel will be connected to the existing property along a scenic walkway connector. A 2,800 square foot outdoor terrace, with canopy coverage of 1,130 square feet, featuring fire pits, a grill station and bar service is planned for the ground level of the tower as well.

The Earth Tower is projected to have created 1,000 construction and permanent jobs, as well as 1,200 indirect jobs.

Grease 9-by-9-inch baking dish.

Cube cinnamon bread and add half to prepared baking dish. Add fruit filling over bread. Cover fruit filling with rest of bread cubes.

In bowl, whisk together eggs, half-and-half and cinnamon. Pour evenly over bread.

Cover and chill overnight.

Heat oven to 325 F. Uncover and bake for 45-55 minutes. If it starts to brown too much, tent aluminum foil over casserole.

Let cool in pan for about 10 minutes.

Whisk together powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon milk, adding more as needed to make pourable glaze. Drizzle glaze over casserole just before serving.

The ARM Cuauhtémoc serves as a training ship for the Mexican Navy and will visit New London May 2-6.

he ARM Cuauhtémoc (kwawˈte.mok), tall ship of the Mexican Navy, will visit New London May 2-6. The ship will be open for tours, and its crew is expected to visit the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Mayor Michael Passero announced today.

A 270-foot barque built in 1982, the Cuauhtémoc serves as a training ship for the Mexican Navy.

The vessel, commanded by Capt. Pedro Mata Cervantes, is scheduled to arrive May 2 at 10 a.m. following a sail training trip that began March 12 in Acapulco Guerrero, Mexico, its homeport.

The ARM designation used before the name of the vessel refers to Armada Republica Mexicana.

The ship set out on a journey that will include stops in 13 countries, including the U.S., Canada and Europe.

Before entering the harbor, the Cuauhtémoc will exchange the traditional 21-gun salute with the mobile saluting battery from Submarine Base New London, which will be positioned at Fort Trumbull to render honors. An informal welcoming flotilla is expected to be on hand to greet the ship, followed by a welcoming ceremony at City Pier with a musical greeting from the Coast Guard Band.

The Mexican cadets will visit the Coast Guard Academy where a variety of athletic and social events are planned. The Mexican Navy will also host a reception for invited guests on board the tall ship Monday evening.

The Cuauhtémoc will be open for public tours at City Pier Monday, May 2 from noon to 4 p.m. and and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of that week.

“We’re starting our summer tourist season off with an international flair,” said the mayor. “It is an honor to host one of the world’s great tall ships, and I encourage all New Londoners and everyone, really, to come and tour the ship while she’s in port.”

Wait Until Spring

Carl H. Johnson’s latest book is a series of baseball articles to inform and enjoy.

by Roger Zotti ccording to baseball historian Carl H. Johnson, New York Yankee centerfielder Joe DiMaggio was “the best all-around ball player I ever saw play the game.” In his latest book, The Baseball Buff’s Bathroom Book (Volume One), in the piece titled “Joe DiMaggio,” Carl cites the Yankee Clipper’s 1941 fifty-six game hitting streak, calling it a record “which will probably never be broken.”

Also during that year DiMaggio struck out—brace yourself!—13 times in 617 times at bat. For his fabulous season, he was named the American League’s Most Valuable Player.

In another piece, titled “The Other DiMaggio’s Streak,” we

read that Joe’s younger brother Dom, a stellar centerfielder for the Boston Red Sox from 1940 to 1953, with a .298 lifetime batting average, owns an impressive consecutive game hitting streak. It began June 26, 1949, against the St. Louis Cardinals, ending 34 games later against the Yankees.

Carl quotes sports journalist Tom Clavin: In the eighth inning Dom “sent a screaming line drive to the outfield that Joe caught, preventing Dominic from coming closer to Joe’s record 56 game streak.”

(Those baseball gods have an ironic sense of humor, don’t they?)

Joe and Dom DiMaggio are two of the baseball players Carl writes about in his book. As he told The Resident in a recent interview, “[The book] is a series of 50 articles about major league players, games, and events in Major League baseball, both historical and contemporary. The articles, from 1,000 to 1,500 words, are designed to be enjoyed in short periods of down time.”

He added: “I write a column covering Major League Baseball for the Biddeford, Maine, Journal Tribune and also for the Insider Sports Network. I write about baseball because it has been my passion since I began to play it as a youngster. I am like the great Rogers Hornsby who, when

asked what he does during the winter when there is no baseball, responded, ‘I stare out the window and wait for Spring.’”

Another one of my favorite articles is “Sandy Koufax,” whom Carl praises for doing “it all in a very short career. If not for the arthritis that forced him to retire at age 30, in his prime and seemingly getting better and better, there is no telling how many games he would have won. No wonder at age 80, he is still a fixture in the Dodgers organization and still works with young pitchers in spring training.”

Other articles include “Satchel Paige,” “Why Catchers Become Managers,” “The 1975 World Series,” and “Tony Gwynn.” All are, of course, well researched and written in typical Carl H. Johnson fashion: perceptively, entertainingly, and informatively.

The “The Baseball Buff ’s Bathroom Book: Volume One” and Carl’s other books, From Beer to Beards and Wait ‘Till Next Year: 2016, are available on Amazon. com, Kindle, and at various New England independent bookstores.

There are also surprisingly CHILD SLAVES ON THE FARMS! That’s right,CHILD SLAVES! People in Mali see the children being trafficked to the farms every single day! The kids

who are dropped off the bus at Zegoua are only 10-15 years old.

Then are tricked into going with traffickers on motorbikes that bring the children to different farms and plantations. The heartbreaking tragedy is that most of these children never see their parents AGAIN! Imagine knowing that you might never see your child again! Imagine that you ARE the child knowing that you don’t have you loving parents there telling you that everything is going to be ok. Some kids try to escape, but very few get away with it. Most are killed while trying! That’s why some people are starting to save the children that are being trafficked. One person named Idrissa Kante saved over 150 children! All I am asking is for you

For those who dare – we have a super hot pepper – “Biker Billie” a large dark green 12 alarm flavor. Hot peppers are easy to grow, but wait until night temperatures are in the mid 50’s before they go in the ground. They like full sun, feeding once a week and cut the fruit with a knife. Keep soil a little dry. Think of Mexico.

The Garden Club Plant Sale also is selling heirloom tomatoes and hardy herb plants for your vegetable garden. Their numerous home grown perennials dug from members’ gardens are always a favorite… plus colorful annuals and hanging baskets for Mother’s Day. A celebrity hair stylist and beauty expert of 20 years, Pat gave beauty advice to the audience while styling the hair of 1st Class Senior Cadet Pat Eideniere during the show’s intermission.

Junior Cadet Nik k i Nottingham was having her hair done by Lindsay Harold of Hair Cuttery in Groton. Since female cadets are mandated to wear their hair in a bun, styling hair was hard for Nottingham. “It was nice getting advice on how to style hair, because the women in the academy do not style their hair often,” said Nikki.

Overall, the event was a success. This was the third year USO held the fashion show at the Coast Guard Academy. USO has held 14 shows over the past three years, and has touched over 25,000 service members and family members across the country, including in Las Vegas and New York.

Manager Matt explains, “The most important ShopRite Clinton part of the grocery business is giving the customers what they want, especially when it comes to sale items. As manager, Matt is also responsible for designing displays. This is the creative part of his job but it requires marketing knowledge of what locations are best for quick and easy shopping. Certainly, his 31+ years in the grocery biz, gives Matt a vast knowledge of grassroots grocery trends.

enine Zavala underwent a heart transplant on January 11th, 2016 at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. She battled for her health every day in ICU/CCU, facing many complications after the surgery (including a second open heart surgery.) uring May 3-5, Naval Security Force drills along the waterfront of Naval Submarine Base New London (SUBASE) will include live automatic weapons firing with blanks.

A regularly-scheduled exercise, this training opportunity is a continuation of SUBASE efforts to enhance the readiness of base Naval Security Forces to respond to threats to the base and its homeported submarines.

Drills will involve SUBASE Security boats, simulated aggressor boats, submarines, and waterfront facilities.

As in the past few years, the drills will also involve live automatic weapons firing with blanks.

“The blank fire adds a very realistic element and greatly enhances the scenarios that we’ve developed simulating attacks on

our waterfront,” said Dave Cruz, SUBASE Training Officer.

Cruz emphasizes that the base is only conducting the training exercises with the live firing during the work day; “so if our neighbors or base personnel hear gunfire or something of concern before 8 a.m. or after 4 p.m., then they should report it immediately for the proper authorities to investigate.”

The coordination and planning for these exercises have been extensive according to Cruz. “We’ve involved the Coast Guard and local law enforcement and we’re communicating with local officials, emergency managers, and the media,” said Cruz.

“We’re also involving a large team of training and safety observers to ensure we conduct these exercise scenarios in accordance with the strictest safety parameters.”

ou have to deal with many different types of people.

In work situations, you have little or no choice with who you interact with. There are bosses, coworkers, subordinates, and customers. Socially, you have much more discretion. There are those you like and get along with easily. There are also people you don’t care for and would rather not associate with.

Even strangers fall into one of these categories. Some are pleasant and easy to get along with while others can be rude and nasty. There may even be people who you don’t care for but can’t really identify a reason as to why.

It’s easy to get along with those you like. The challenge lies in getting along with people you don’t like or who are difficult. From a practical standpoint, you do have to get along with a wide variety of people. You can’t control how others behave, but you can control how you interact with them.

Your actions can make a

situation tolerable or turn it from bad to worse. When interacting with others, keep your objective in mind. You don’t need to prove that you are right or that the other person is wrong. Focusing on what you are trying to accomplish helps keep things in perspective and prevents you from getting sidetracked.

Recognize that each person’s reality is based on their perceptions. How someone else views the world has no connection to how you do. Someone might be totally wrong and unable to support their position logically and yet to them, they are right. It’s usually a waste of time to try to convince them otherwise.

Your goal is to accomplish your objective, not to exacerbate problems. Toward this end, you don’t want to make the other person’s problem yours. Don’t internalize their actions. Allowing yourself to become angry, bitter, or resentful causes you a great deal of harm and won’t help the situation.

Here are some techniques you can use to get along with others.

First, recognize and accept people for who they are. Don’t try to change them. You can’t, it’s a waste of your time, and it will be annoying to the other person.

Work with and around who they are.

Take an interest in the other person. Let your words and actions demonstrate respect. Each person wants to feel they are important. Treat them appropriately and you will get more accomplished than if you belittle someone.

Be polite. Use “please” and “thank you.” Ask rather than demand. Show your appreciation to those that assist you.

Unfortunately, too many people are rude or impersonal. When you are courteous, your actions will make a positive impression and cultivate cooperation.

Strive to understand the other person’s position. You don’t have to agree with them, but the more you know about their motivation, the easier it is to formulate an effective strategy to deal with them.

Be positive. Seek out solutions rather than placing blame.

Becoming defensive is an automatic response to being accused of being responsible for a problem.

Once someone is in this mode, they will fight you instead of being cooperative.

Be honest. People resent being misled. Word of your insincerity will spread and you will be avoided. Those people that have to deal with you will distrust you. It will be difficult, if not impossible to get others to cooperate with you.

It’s actually easier to get along with others than to continually be in conflict. Apply the techniques listed above and you will experience a noticeable improvement in your interaction with others.

Dear Neil: Some people decide to not have sex with their spouse. So why do these same people get upset when their husband or wife has sex with someone else?

–Not Sure I Understand Dear Not Sure: Some people have negative associations with sex. Although they desire to be married, they don’t desire sex, or they’ve given up on having a close erotic relationship. Other people may enjoy sex, but for a variety of reasons withhold it. They may be punishing their partner to make a point or to settle a score. Perhaps the relationship has grown distant and disconnected, and they no longer feel close enough to want sex. They may be married, but they’re no longer in an intimate relationship.

But add another sexual partner to this mix, and you have a potentially explosive situation. This is because your spouse most probably assumes you belong to him or her—and would feel that another lover would violate the relationship and would therefore be grounds to hang you for treason. (Maybe I’m exaggerating, maybe I’m not.)

If one person withdraws sex, very often his/her partner will not give up romance and sexual desire—he or she will simply go elsewhere to get it. If you wish to avoid this scenario, don’t let

–Fed Up in Florida Dear Fed Up: Some people use assistance to get on their feet or to jump-start their lives, and others just game the system. The bigger question is about how you can stop your sister-in-laws’ sense of entitlement. There are essentially two types of people who feel entitled: those that are embarrassed they’re on the take and are motivated to get back on their feet as soon as they can, and those who will take a free ride as long as they can. If your sister-in-law is in the first category, somebody in the family might help her explore how she might take control over her life. If she fits the second description, she will be resistant to any changes.

If your mother-in-law is giving money to her daughter, there is nothing you can do. But if the daughter is stealing, you could call social services and report her for elderly abuse.
