by Indigo Eve Cohen harles Hislop was born in Washington D.C. in 1941. He grew up in Connecticut and attended Mitchell College in New London before finishing his bachelor’s degree at Drew University in New Jersey. It was 1962, when during his senior year, Charlie joined the U.S. Navy. He attended four months of officer candidate school in Newport, RI and six months of supply school in Athens, GA. He received such high marks, he was assigned to the destroyer, the U.S.S. Compton in Newport, RI, as the ship’s only supply officer. While serving on the U.S.S. Compton, Charlie did a three month stint in the Mediterranean.

He was then assigned back to supply school, this time to teach personnel administration. It wasn’t long before he would become a student again; Charlie applied and was selected for Transportation Management School in Oakland, CA. After graduating first in his class, Charlie was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to the U.S. Naval Base at Supic Bay in the Philippines. There he supervised roughly 1000 people loading and unloading cargo ships, some of which came from the war in Vietnam to get fresh supplies and troops. After two years Charlie was transferred to the Boston Naval Shipyard in MA to outfit newly built ships, where he received his first command as the officer in charge of the Supply Overhaul Assistance Team.

The next step in his naval career would find Charlie assigned to Port Hueneme, CA, as the supply officer for a construction battalion. He joined the battalion

in Puerto Rico where they were building communication stations, among other things. From Puerto Rico they sailed to Diego Garcia, a small atoll in the Indian Ocean, where they built communication stations and a runway. Charlie spent two years with the construction battalion, during which time he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander. For his next assignment Charlie was appointed Chief of Naval Technical Training at the Naval Air Station in Millington, TN. There he

coordinated all supply training in the navy, including eight schools, approximately 50 courses and about 10,000 students per year.

It was 1976 when Charlie was reassigned as supply officer to the Trident Training Facility in Silverdale, WA. For two years he served as supply officer, fiscal officer and security officer.

It was during this time Charlie started working on his master’s degree in systems management at the University of Southern CA. He was then assigned to the

U.S.S. San Jose with a homeport in Guam. It was while on the ship that he was promoted to commander. Charlie’s next assignment was in Seoul, Korea, where he provided logistical support to the Joint U.S. Military Assistance Group.

For the second portion of his time in Seoul, he worked under a twostar admiral, providing logistical support for visiting naval units.

In 1985 Charlie was due to start a new assignment in Williamsburg, VA, when he and his family were called to the White House for a special ceremony. They were honored by first lady Nancy Reagan, as one of seven great American families. The Hislops were honored as the greatest military family. In Williamsburg Charles was selected to command the navy’s Cargo Handling and Port Group. With 300 sailors and six reserve battalions in his command, he would send teams all over the world to load and unload Navy and Marine Corps air planes and ships.

After three years, Charles was reassigned to Naval Support Antarctica, at the McMurdo Station. When asked what service there was like he slyly remarked “Cool. Pun intended.” For a six month deployment Charlie and his party would fly out in August and change planes in New Zealand,

where they would stock up on cold weather clothing and other supplies. McMurdo Station supports research done by scientists from the National Science Foundation, Polar Division. Charlie chuckles when he describes their interaction with the local penguin population “One of the penguins came tobogganing over on his belly and for some reason he took a dislike to one of our officers. He grabbed him by his khaki pants and started beating him with his flippers!

We got a lot of laughs out of that.

Somebody filmed it and it ended up on the local news.”

Charlie retired in 1989 but he wouldn’t stay retired for long. Two years later the navy was calling again. The man who had taken his position on McMurdo Station had been in a serious car accident and Charlie was offered the job again.

He had been supervising students at the New Mexico Military Institute but he was happy to return to the Antarctic for two more years. Eventually he was offered command of McMurdo Station, however he declined when he was denied permission to bring his dog.

Charlie Hislop is retired from the navy and works as a captain for the Stonewall Fire Prevention District in CO, where he also serves on its board of directors.

Groton Utilities will present the award to the winner of the thirteenth annual Jacqueline B. Nixon Community Service Award during City of Groton Day 2016 on August 5th at Washington Park.

Groton Utilities named the award The Jacqueline B. Nixon Community Service Award to commemorate Mrs. Nixon’s service to her community. Jackie, as she was known to most, operated a food pantry in her residence for 24 years. She distributed food on a regular basis to many needy families. Jackie passed away July 6, 2004 after a brief battle with cancer.

Like Jackie, the nominee’s contributions to the community should make other citizens describe the nominee as generous, committed, and other similar admirable qualities, which exemplify “service.”

The closing date for nominations is July 1, 2016. Applications may be obtained at the Groton Utilities Customer Care Center at the City of Groton Municipal Building at 295 Meridian Street.

roton Utilities announced that it is accepting nominations for the thirteenth annual Jacqueline B. Nixon Community Service Award.

The purpose of the award is to honor a member of the community who has contributed his or her time, energy and resources to make the community a better place in which to live and work.

Persons eligible for the award must live in Greater Groton, which encompasses the City, the Town, and any of the subdivisions or fire districts. The person should exemplify all the qualities suggested by Groton Utilities’ slogan of “Giving back to the community.”

tate Representative John Scott (R-40) applauded the State Bond Commission for approving a ten-year loan to Doncasters Precision Castings for a planned expansion of operations in Groton.

According to the Bond Commission agenda, the $4 million loan will be used to “assist with renovations, machinery and equipment for expansion of its operations in Groton. The company will retain 136 jobs and create 120 new jobs.

The loan will be provided at an interest rate of 2% for ten years.

The company will be eligible for loan forgiveness of $2 million if it

retains and creates the jobs within five years and maintains them for two years.”

“Doncasters is a good corporate citizen with strong roots in our community and this loan will allow them to expand further and increase their workforce substantially which is good news for Southeastern Connecticut,” Rep. Scott said.

Clock & Watch Museum Open House

T

he American Clock & Watch Museum will open for the 2016 season on Saturday, April 2nd. Special activities that include clock repair demonstrations in the clock shop and the opening of the exhibit, “Trains, Planes, and Automobiles: Timepieces in the Tr a n s p o r t a t i o n Industr y,” are planned for the day.

Free admission will be offered to all visitors on this special day. The museum will be open seven days a week 10-5 from April 2nd through November 23rd and Friday-Sunday from Thanksgiving through Easter.

The museum holds one of the largest collections of American clocks and watches in the world

with approximately 6,000 timepieces in its collection. As visitors travel through the museum’s eight galleries, many timekeeping devices chime and strike upon the hour.

Located in the historic “Federal Hill” district of Bristol, the museum boasts 10,000sq. ft. of exhibit space housed in an 1801 Federal-style home and two modern additions. It has a beautiful sundial garden that is meticulously maintained by the members of the Bristol Garden Club.

Kim Brian Bushey brings 35 years of commercial lending experience to Putnam Bank.

State University, Kim worked the first 25 years of his commercial banking career with Bank of America and predecessor banks. His experience included time in Credit Analysis and Underwriting, Commercial Real Estate, Special Finance, AssetBased Lending and Business Finance. He worked the last 9 years at Santander (formerly Sovereign Bank) in management positions in Underwriting, AssetBased Lending and Business Banking which included managing the Business Banking team at Santander covering Connecticut and Western Massachusetts.

In recent years, Kim has been actively devoted to helping raise money and awareness in the fight against both ovarian and brain cancer and is looking forward to getting actively involved in all of the communities that Putnam Bank serves.

Kim has lived in eastern Connecticut his entire life and resides in Hebron with his wife Susan and their five children.

Seaman Ashley Smith is a logistics specialist with the beach group operating out of Virginia Beach, Virginia.

A Navy logistics specialist is responsible for supporting the teams and procuring the supplies that the command needs.

“I like feeling like I make a difference,” said Ashley. “I have a real sense of accomplishment working at this command.”

Commissioned in 1948, NBG 2 is designed to organize, man, train and equip forces to execute, combat support, and combat service support missions.

NBG 2 is made of four commands, Assault Craft Unit TWO (ACU 2), Assault Craft Unit FOUR (ACU 4), Amphibious Construction Battalion TWO (PHIBCB 2), and Beach Master Unit TWO (BMU 2); who have their own individual missions that assist to ensure the overall mission of NBG 2 is complete.

Seaman Smith serves with BMU 2 who provides Naval Beach Party Teams (BPTs) for deployment in conjunction with Expeditionary Forces in order to provide beach and surf zone salvage and to facilitate the landing and movement over the beach of troops, equipment, supplies, and the evacuation of casualties, prisoners-of-war, and non-combatants.

“I like the people that I work with,” said Ashley. “They are a great group and the leadership has

been really good.”

Approximately 30 officers and 300 enlisted men and women make up the beach group. Their jobs are highly specialized and keep each part of the command running smoothly. The jobs range from operating boats to maintaining engines and handling weaponry.

“The Sailors here never cease to impress me with the effort they put into their daily work,” said Capt. Jeffrey Hayhurst, commodore commander of NBG 2. “Their dedication and hard work make me proud to be in command of Naval Beach Group Two.” Although NBG 2 is made up of four separate commands, they all work together to complete their mission of providing the Navy personnel and equipment to support an amphibious operation or exercise.

These exercises can include evacuation of American citizens from a hostile territory, delivery of food and medical supplies after a natural disaster, the bulk delivery of fuel or fresh water from a ship anchored off the coast through a pipeline to a shore facility, and nearly any other task that involves moving from ships offshore to the beach.

“I am a lot more self-aware since joining the Navy,” said Ashley. “Even though I joined a little later in life, it has still made me grow up.”

As a member of the one of the U.S. Navy’s most unique commands, Seaman Smith and other NBG 2 Sailors understand that they need to have the ability to complete a variety of missions to help keep America safe from enemies foreign and domestic.

Nautilus and Sub Force Museum Reopens April 9

istoric Ship Nautilus (SSN 571), the world’s first nuclear powered submarine, and the U.S. Navy Submarine Force Museum, the Navy’s official submarine museum, will close to conduct regularly scheduled, semi-annual maintenance beginning Monday, April 4.

The museum and submarine are currently scheduled to re-open Saturday, April 9. Patrons are

encouraged to visit www.ussnautilus.org or www. facebook.com/SubmarineMuseum for announcements of any changes to the anticipated schedule.

Historic Ship Nautilus (SSN 571) and the Submarine Force Museum are free to the public. The museum and ship are open Wednesday – Monday (closed Tuesdays). Winter hours (November – April) are from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM; Summer hours (May – October) are from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The museum and ship typically closes for 1-2 weeks in early April and early November for maintenance. The Nautilus and Sub Force Museum are located at One Crystal Lake Road, Groton.

ouise Clark has been doing her job 30 years... Louise was there on the first day of the current Cardinal Honda building. She is a “Plank Owner”, first to work at the dealership. She was there to welcome the owners on day one, then their children and grandchildren. Once, when

Louise was asked to connect to Kim Cardinal’s voice mail, Louise said, “I am the voice mail”.

Louise has been seeing the view from her window, her place, for 30 years. In the beginning it was just deer, grass and trees.

Cardinal Honda has now named the hill after Louise, “CLARK

HILL” in her honor. To commemorate the special day Louise was presented with a plaque showing “Clark Hill.”

Louise exclaimed, “It has been nice watching the Cadinal family growing up. I have enjoyed my place.”

And that’s just what Managing Partner Eric Pivco likes to see, as he aspires to create a true destination that offers value to the community and attracts neighbors and visitors alike.

“We are very busy on the weekends here, but I would love The Velvet Mill to be active and bustling all the time,” he said.

“Development is an ongoing process. We are so grateful to the local community for their support.

Among just a sampling of the businesses at The Velvet Mill are Cheese Boro Whey, which offers fresh, handcrafted cheeses made from local milk; Beer’d, an award-winning craft brewery; and Zest, a gourmet bakery.

There is also a hair salon, yoga studio, body care, scanning services, and a screen printer, as well as a diverse array of artists with studios, including painters, fiber artists, photographers, jewelers, sculptors, printmakers, graphic designers, and furniture designers.

The mill even has its own convenience store.

New arrivals this spring will be The Velvet Vine, a wine bar and bistro operated by the owners of The Twisted Vine in Westerly, and The Flower Belle, a floral design company that will celebrate its grand opening on April 2 from 1:00 to 4:00 with a champagne toast and small bites, and dancing

starting at 5:00 PM. The Velvet Mill hosts many events throughout the year, including a popular farmer’s market on Saturdays through May. On May 22 the mill will host the fifth annual Fusion fund-raiser for the Ocean Community and Greater Mystic chambers of commerce, with live music and other activities. The Velvet Mill is also available for weddings, live performances, and other events.

“Come visit us—there is a lot to do here every day! We want to keep this great building viable and occupied for many more years,” Eric said.

by Indigo Eve Cohen very Thursday, from 9 am to 12 noon a group of women meet in the basement of the Westville Congregational Church in Danielson. They’re a boisterous group, so laughter and good natured teasing reverberate around the room but underneath lies the steady hum of sewing machines working at full speed. This group of women are known as the Interfaith Stitchers and for over a decade they’ve been providing hand sewn items to a wide variety of people in need to provide comfort and warmth during difficult times.

The group was started 16 years ago by Cecile Cloutier, who with a small group began making hand crafted sleeping bags for the homeless. Over the years the group has grown to 50 members who provide a wide variety of handmade items

to a long list of hospitals, organizations and facilities. In October of 2015 Cecile was ready to pass on leadership of the group to a new coordinator, Blanche Carpenter.

Blanche is a reluctant front woman. Shying away from the spotlight, she is far more comfortable with the sizable amount of behind the scenes work required to keep the operation running smoothly.

The Interfaith Stitchers make a wide variety of items, including lap blankets, scarves, baby blankets, shawls, slippers, pillows, quilts, bibs, changing pads, aprons and so much more. Member Bonnie Morin just completed a delicate, old-fashioned christening cap and gown. Another member, Sally Lockwood, sews lovely dresses with small matching purses which are sent to an orphanage in Haiti. The Stitchers send their one-of-a-kind items to be distributed at Day Kimball Hospital,

Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Backus Hospital, Saint Francis Hospital and Hartford Hospital, as well as several other hospice centers and convalescent homes. A subset of the group, the Busy Bees, is still making sleeping bags for the homeless. The Stitchers even have items set aside for emergency requests.

Since January 2016 they have produced over 2585 individual pieces. The Stitchers most difficult challenge is raising money for the more costly supplies, such as quilt batting to line the quilts and sleeping bags for warmth. Catalyst Challenge Kick-Off

T

he Community Coalition for Children…helping children thrive® has taken its 20th anniversary as an opportunity to establish a new initiative designed to promote on-going community action by participants in their programs. The Catalyst Challenge will encourage students and adults to take what they learn at the annual intergenerational workshop and form an action plan for their school or community.

Recent years’ programs have focused on helping youth become more resilient, healthier eaters, and more involved in physical fitness and creative play.

When the coalition was founded by moms around a kitchen table in Norwich in 1996, the focus

was on parents and other adults, including educators and community leaders. The coalition is a partnership of public, independent, and alternative K-12 schools, colleges, community social service agencies, learning consortia, hospitals, tribal entities, military-related entities, youth services bureaus, corporations, and individuals.

Over the years, the attendance by parents and educators at the adult-focused program segments has diminished, but the student-focused (albeit “intergenerational”) segments have remained vibrant and productive. For example, when David L. Katz, M.D. engaged more than 300 students two years ago, he asked them what kind of fuel they would put in

their car. When it became clear that they would choose the best fuel, he challenged them to do the same with their own bodies – because they are in charge of what they consume. The outgrowth of that dynamic morning was that middle school and high school students around the region went back to their own schools and said they wanted to have a salad bar that would enable them to choose what they wanted to eat. Another recent initiative has been the development of small culinary programs in some of the traditional high schools where students are involved even in the planting of some of their food at local farms; they plan and execute their weekly healthy menus, and draw upon the

Everett Flagg, Class of 1958 Everett Flagg participated in football, basketball, track, and baseball, earning nine varsity letters. He earned First Team All-Eastern Connecticut Conference honors in baseball as a sophomore, junior, and senior, in football as a junior, and in basketball as a senior, and was captain of both the basketball and baseball teams in his senior year. He was the 1958 recipient of the Tuite Cup, awarded annually to the top male athlete in the class.

Robert E. Thibdeau, Sr., Class of 1960 Robert Thibdeau lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and track, earning All-Eastern Connecticut Conference honors in baseball, and he helped lead SHS to the 1960 Connecticut Class B Baseball championship. He was a member of ECC champion teams in baseball and track as a freshman, in basketball and baseball as a junior, and baseball as a senior.

David Weber, Class of 1971 David Weber participated in football and track.

He earned All-Eastern Connecticut Conference and Second Team All-State honors in football, leading the Bears in scoring as a senior, when the Bears had a 9-1 record and received the CIAC Merit Award.

As a member of the track team, he ran the 100, 200, and 4 x 200, earning All-ECC honors and serving a co-captain in his senior year, when the Bears were ECC champions.

Karen Kluttz Lariviere, Class of 1976 Karen Kluttz Lariviere participated in tennis, basketball, track, and softball. She was captain of the basketball team in her senior year, and was named All-Eastern Connecticut Conference as a junior and senior and First Team All-State as a senior. She also earned All-ECC honors in softball in her senior year.

A member of the National Honor Society, she was named female Scholar-Athlete in 1976.

Cherryl A. Hobart, Class of 1977 Cherryl Hobart participated in tennis, field hockey, basketball, and softball, earning letters in all four sports and serving as co-captain of the basketball team in her senior year. She was the recipient of the 1977 Athletic Achievement Cup, awarded annually to the top female athlete in the class. She earned AllEastern Connecticut Conference honors in basketball as a junior and senior and in softball as a senior, and was named Honorable Mention All-State in basketball as a sophomore and junior.

Jeanne Berthasavage Lucey, Class of 1982 Jeanne Berthasavage Lucey participated in field hockey, basketball, and track, earning numerous AllECC and All-State honors in track. She was a member of the Class M State Champion 4x100 meter relay team as a sophomore, and was the Class M State Champion in the 100 meters as a junior and senior, equaling the state record of 12.5 seconds as a junior.

Karen E. Colwell, Class of 2004 Karen Colwell participated in basketball and crew, playing on an ECC champion team as a sophomore and serving as a captain as a senior in basketball, and is the most accomplished rower to graduate from SHS. Dr. Stephen H. Murphy, Contributor Steve Murphy, retired principal, was instrumental in the formation and success of the SHS Athletic Hall of Fame. He served as principal from 19962014, and during his tenure was involved in numerous improvement projects, including the renovation of SHS that was completed in 2005. He facilitated the formation of the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee and oversaw the planning for each induction, with the first held in 2005.

1956 Boys Basketball Team The 1956 Boys Basketball team were Eastern Connecticut Conference and Class B State Champions. They defeated Farmington, Seymour, Darien, and East Haven in the state tournament, ending East Haven’s 77-game winning streak with the 62-60 victory.

by Anna Maria Trusky hanks to a recent partnership between the Avalonia Land Conservancy, Inc. and the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut (CFECT), a $50,000 endowment will support the regional land trust’s mission into perpetuity. Avalonia Land Conservancy, which is dedicated to conservation through the acquisition of natural areas, holds more than 3,400 acres of land, preserved as natural open space in Griswold, Groton, Ledyard, North Stonington, Preston, and Stonington.

“One member, Adele Erisman from North Stonington, left us a bequest,” explained Heather Milardo, Executive Director of the Avalonia Land Conservancy.

The board decided to set aside $50,000 from this bequest to create a sustainable fund for the land conservancy.

The Avalon ia Land Conservancy Fund joins more than 40 other agency endowments managed by CFECT, which has more than 460 individual funds

overall. In addition to investment management, CFECT will provide accounting and recordkeeping, periodic reporting, distributions of the funds, and guidance and training regarding the cultivation and solicitation of endowment gifts. CFECT will also help grow the funds and make mission-supporting annual distributions to Avalonia.

“Having this kind of endowment says ‘permanence.’ It fosters trust from donors, demonstrating to them to that we’ve taken steps to ensure that we’ll be around for a long time, and we will have a source of revenue,” Heather said.

T he Ava lon ia L a nd Conservancy’s recent projects include restoring habitat for the New England cottontail rabbit and restoring the Dodge Paddock property in Stonington Borough, which suffered severe damage during Superstorm Sandy.

“We want people to realize that we’re out in their community, working to create an environment that is beneficial to people’s health and well-being,” Heather

said. “Our mission is about more than just conserving space but also about maintaining a healthy environment we have healthier communities.”

Avalonia Land Conservancy is in the process of applying for national accreditation through the Land Trust Alliance, and hopes to have the accreditation in place for its 50th anniversary, in spring of 2018.

“The Community Foundation is glad to manage funds created by local people and organizations for the benefit of the region,” said Alison Woods, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of CFECT. “Avalonia is a great land trust that works very hard to accomplish their mission of preserving open space. This endowment will support that mission for years to come.”

A Resounding Literary Success from Mary-Louise Parker

by Roger Zotti s evidenced in her first book, a memoir titled Dear Mr. You (Scribners/ 2015), actress Mary-Louise Parker is a deep thinker, a poet, an occasional philosopher, and an excellent writer. A collection of letters written to various men who have been part of or have influenced her life, her debut work is never gossipy. In fact, she doesn’t even name names. More: Parker uses the epistolary form and a stream-of-consciousness technique that pulls the reader into her mind and soul—especially the latter—in each of the book’s thirty-four observant pieces.

An award winning actress,

having won an Emmy, a Tony, a Golden Globe, and an Obie, Parker is best known for her roles in “Weeds,” “Proof,” “Angels in America,” “The West Wing,” “Bullets over Broadway,” and “Legalese,” an overlooked stinging satire of the legal profession.

One of the most affecting letters is “Dear Man Out of Time.”

In it, Parker is at a party in New York and attracted to a man diagnosed with terminal cancer. In turn, he’s attracted to her. But their “attraction came with boundaries” because she has a boyfriend, he a girlfriend. Nevertheless, Parker writes, “I just liked you so much.”

She leaves with his telephone number and “an appreciable

A month passes and one day Parker travels uptown to visit him: “Your girlfriend opened the

You looked pale and a bit thinner but still dashing.” His weakened condition doesn’t stop them from going on what Parker calls “our unique nondate” for lunch at a local bistro.

The missive’s close is both heart-wrenching and heart-warming. Home from a month long trip, Parker receives a card from the man’s girlfriend: “She told me I’d mattered to you and given you a kind of boost. I held the card to my face, covering my eyes, and saw us walking down the street.” She

continues: “Thank you for giving me your arm and those four hours that I now understand you did not have an endless supply of... It was short but I loved our little trip. We fell in love, but the way you love a view that comes along once or twice in life. You don’t want to leave because it feels like . . . this is the perfect spot.”

Parker emerges from the book’s pages as courageous and sensitive, intelligent and honest.

And, no, she isn’t self-indulgent, a big reason why this uniquely written memoir is unlike most books celebrities write. A literary work of depth, “Dear Mr. You” is available at amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, and area bookstores.

She also remembers trolley cars traveling along Thames Street and a ferry that transported Groton residents across the river to New London for only five cents. “You can still see the big posts that held up the dock for the ferry down by Paul’s Pasta,” she said.

Speaking of pasta, there was plenty of that on the table in Nettie’s cheerful Italian childhood home! “My parents were very happy people. I remember my father singing all the time. We had wonderful gatherings on Sundays and holidays. Many relatives would come to the house. We loved to sit around the table and we enjoyed big dinners with all the traditional Italian foods.” Nettie still makes her own meatballs, chicken cutlets, and lasagna from scratch, as well as delicious anise-flavored biscotti.

he Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Virtu Art Festival May 28 & 29, 2016. One of the unique aspects of this year’s event will be a community “yarn bombing” project. Artists who knit or crochet are asked to consider joining this effort to help bring a fresh, creative flair to downtown

I purchased a collection of 1,750 78-rpm recordings from an estate sale. The records are all songs issued on the Tops label and originally belonged to a distributor.

They are still in their cardboard mailing cartons from the 1950s. The problem is that most of the artists that recorded for Tops are unknown, the arrangements lackluster and the discs of little or no interest to collectors. According to two dealers I contacted, Tops generally sell for less than 25 cents each, even in mint condition. Since the records are worth only a fraction of what you paid, selling this collection and recovering the $2,000 you invested will be virtually impossible.

DEAR PAW’S: We adopted a friend’s cat sight unseen. “Tara” is a beautiful young tiger-striped cat, but she claws at every furniture leg in the house. My sofa, for example, is pretty much ruined. How can I get this behavior to stop? -Patricia, via email DEAR PATRICIA: Almost all cats claw at handy chair legs, and often prefer the corners of sofas -- the more expensive, the better, it seems. However, you shouldn’t have to sacrifice your furniture for a friend’s cat.

There are a few things you can do to minimize the scratching. I can’t guarantee that it will go away,

The Things You Didn’t Do

ooking back on their lives, people tend to regret the things they didn’t do, rather than those things they did do. It’s the chances they didn’t take or the opportunities they allowed to go by that they lament.

Human nature makes us risk avoidant. We prefer that which we perceive as safe instead of anything risky. The known is much more appealing than the unknown.

So your innate tendency will be to avoid those opportunities where success isn’t guaranteed.

Put things off until later and you wind up never doing them at all. Time goes by too fast and its speed increases every year. Your age doesn’t matter. You’re never going to be as young as you are today. So get started today working on those things you want to accomplish.

Here are some common regrets expressed by people in surveys. Use them as a guide to assess where you are and make any adjustments needed. You may see

things you haven’t done up to this point. If there are things you really want to do, get started.

Not finishing your education.

An education is an investment in yourself that pays off your entire life. It’s easier to complete your schooling while you are young and free from the obligations and responsibilities of later life.

However, you can continue your education at any point in your life.

There are numerous examples of people getting degrees well into their retirement years.

Not spending more time with your children. When your kids are young, you are working hard to support your family. This process holds true whether one or both parents are working. You are striving to keep your family comfortable and providing for all of their needs.

Your kids will grow up quickly. Before you know it, they will be starting families of their own.

Spending time with your children when they are young should be at the top of your priority list. They need you and you need them. It’s never too late to start spending more time with your kids. If they live a distance away from you, keep in contact via phone and internet.

Not spending enough time with your parents. You only have one set of parents. You are uniquely connected to them in a way that is different from everyone else. Your parents won’t be around forever. When you have a busy life, you tend to put off spending time with family. This is especially true when they live far

away. When your parents are no longer with you, you don’t want to feel bad that you didn’t appreciate them more and spend additional time with them.

Not living life your way. There is always a lot of pressure to conform. You worry about what other people say, think, and do. You don’t want to disappoint those closest to you or make them unhappy. It’s your life and you are responsible for your happiness.

Achieving someone else’s goals results in frustration. Follow your own path and pursue your own dreams.

Not trying something because of fear. Fear of failure can prevent you from pursuing your interests.

Allowing fear to dictate your actions inhibits success. You feel it’s safer to avoid risky behavior rather than attempting something that may not work out as planned.

However, the only way to attain goals is by moving out of your comfort zone. Something that doesn’t work out as planned isn’t failure, it’s a learning experience.

Live your life to its fullest. Do things and try things. When you look back on what you have done, you don’t want to regret those things you didn’t do.

ear Neil: I would like to know whether my husband is having a midlife crisis. He keeps saying he loves me but is not in love with me anymore, and that I am not the person he married. Can you help?

–Lost in Sacramento Dear Lost: It sounds like your husband is saying he no longer loves you. That is hard to hear, but it does not mean he is in a midlife crisis. People sometimes fall out of love with each other, but they can also fall back in love as well, and that’s what I would recommend you focus on.

How would you do this? First, ask your husband for specifics.

How long has he felt this way? Do these emotions come from some particular incident or memory?

When he says you’re not the person he married, what specifically is he referring to? Do not explain or defend yourself, even if you’re hurt by his answers. You want to know how he feels, so if he begins telling you, don’t stop him.

Then ask him what he would like you to do differently. What could you do that would help him to feel closer, warmer and more affectionate toward you? What could

you do—or quit doing—that would make a difference to him? Then, if you can, do what he asks. One month later—and every month after that--review with him whether he feels things are better. And then inquire about what else you can do that would help him feel closer and more connected to you.

For your information, recent research is questioning whether such a thing as a midlife crisis actually exists at all, even though the popular culture often talks about it.

Most critical junctures we face in life—losing a job, falling behind financially, being passed by for a promotion, the death of a loved one, the breakup of a relationship, feeling disillusioned regarding our unfulfilled goals—are not unique to midlife at all, but can occur multiple times during our lives and at every age. A midlife crisis is more accurately defined as inner turmoil, anxiety, fear, apprehension and worry about growing older, and I cannot tell if that fits him.

But whether your husband’s feelings are related to growing older, or just that he is questioning his love for you, your most important task is to begin a conversation with him about what is missing in your marriage, and what the two of you can do to repair that.
