Dear Editor

What a lovely surprise winning the Resident Post Cat Contest. Thank you so much. I have had many cats over the years, but never one that enjoyed laundry bags. Chloe (adopted 3 years ago from a rescue organization), commandeered this laundry bag about a year ago. Now the bag lives on my bed and humans are required to wiggle yarn or other cat toys on top while Chloe hides inside; then she attacks the toys through the bag--while remaining inside. To me it seems like a weird way of playing, but it’s what she prefers, so we simply obey.

ach year, Valenti Subaru in Westerly selects a local charity to receive a donation as part of the national Subaru Share the Love event, now in its eleventh year. From November 15, 2018 through January 2, 2019, each new vehicle buyer was invited to select a hometown charity or national charity to receive a $250 donation from Subaru of America, Inc. This year, Valenti’s worthy recipient was PACE Organization of Rhode Island’s Adult Day Care Center in Westerly.

“We love what the Adult Day Care Center does for the people in our community,” said Bruce Morrow, General Manager of Valenti Subaru, who promotes the Share the Love program at the Rhode Island dealership. “Our customers were very interested in helping this organization. All together, more than 100 vehicles were sold and we presented a check for $26,250 to the Adult Day Care Center. I’ve been getting so many emails from

Exciting Economic Development Plans in Groton City

he City of Groton’s Planning and Economic Development Commission is working on a number of exciting initiatives to enhance quality of life in Groton for residents and businesses alike. The plans include a placemaking/beautification initiative, a Tax Increment Financing District, and a Thames River Reconnection plan, reported Cierra Patrick, Economic Development Specialist.

“The placemaking/beautification plan is currently looking at the entire City of Groton to identify places in which we need to invest, such as improving walkability of sidewalks, bicycle lanes, and clear signage to help people find their way,” Cierra explained.

“We want to make it easier for people to navigate the city and get to our commercial areas as well as to UCONN Avery Point, Electric Boat, and Pfizer.”

Another important initiative, which involves the Cities of Groton and New London along with Thames River Innovation Places, is preparing an economic development implementation strategy for the Thames and Bridge Street corridors from near the I-95 ramps near Mitchell Street to Eastern Point Road. (The City of New London’s focus area is Hodges Square.) The goal is to find ways to economically link the two locations, making the neighborhoods more economically vibrant, Cierra explained.

The City is also exploring a Tax Increment Financing District to promote redevelopment of mixed-use neighborhoods. “Tax Increment Financing is basically a financing tool that helps offset development costs,” Cierra pointed out. “For example, Tax Increment Financing would benefit businesses or developers seeking to build or implement infrastructure improvements. There is a complete breakdown of what this is and how it works on the City of Groton website.”

To that end, part of Cierra’s job involves visiting Groton businesses to get feedback from the business community on what the city can do to improve the environment for them and help support their growth.

“I also do outreach for support services, educating business owners about what is available in the area to help them make connections. Business owners are invited to come to our public meetings and be part of the process.”

The next public meeting will be on Thursday, May 9, between 6:30 and 8:30 PM at the Municipal Building Auditorium, 295 Meridian Street, Groton. The meeting will focus on Thames Street development initiatives. Coast Guard Names Gym After Dr. Hallie Gregory

he Coast Guard hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony Saturday where the 5th Deck of Roland Hall Gym will forever be known as the Dr. Hallie Gregory Field House, named after the man that embodied the words “Strive to Excel, Foster Unity, Instill Respect”.

Gregory, a Rockford, Illinois-native, became the first AfricanAmerican head coach at any service academy when he became a head coach at the Coast Guard Academy in 1971.

In attendance at Saturday’s ceremony were his children Holly Gregory-MacDonald, Reverend Paula Haywood, and Hayes Gregory, his niece Valerie Miller, and friend JoAnne Miller. Gregory passed away in 2017.

Coach Gregory was a pioneer, the first African-American coach at the Boys Club of America in Rockford; first African-American teacher at Guilford High School in Rockford; and first African-American coach at Moorhead State College in Moorhead, Minnesota.

When Gregory accepted a faculty position, from then legendary sports figure Otto Graham, his legacy became inextricably linked to the Coast Guard Academy. This gathering on Saturday further cements that legacy and serves as a signal to all that the spirit of Gregory’s words and actions are part of our blueprint for future success.

One computer is already destined to assist an injured soldier, who is enrolled in a college program, to launch a business using drone technology to assess real estate properties in areas recovering from natural disasters. All the computers will assist a veteran in building a company, starting a job, or learning a trade. The only “price” the veteran is asked is to “pay it forward” by hiring other veterans as they grow.

26th Annual Regional Art Exhibit Westerly

n keeping with its 26-year deep-rooted ritual, the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly welcomes the public to enjoy the newest and best work of artists across the Northeast at the opening reception of its Regional Art Exhibit on Friday, May 3rd from 5-8 PM. Each year the galler y is pleased to invite artists to submit their best work for an opportunity to show in this well-known and prestigious exhibit. Fine art and craft in all mediums are eligible and over $2000 will be awarded for outstanding work in many areas including the $500 Louise Pittaway Award for Excellence in Oil Painting.

A highlight of the Regional Show for ACGOW artists is working alongside a guest juror who, each year, brings a fresh and energizing perspective to the gallery, creating a unique and exciting exhibit. This year ACGOW is honored to have Anthony Tomaselli as juror.

ails Up 4 Cancer (SU4C) is the recipient of a Chelsea Groton Foundation grant for 2019. The Chelsea Groton Foundation, Inc. was established in 1998 as a Section 501(c) (3) organization. Initially endowed with a $2 million dollar donation from Chelsea Groton Bank, and recently gifted an additional $5 million from the Bank, the Foundation has awarded over $3.2 million in grants to non-profit organizations in the Bank’s Connecticut and Rhode Island market areas.

Through grants such as this, Sails Up 4 Cancer is able to fulfill requests from many area families for financial assistance due to cancer related medical bills or loss of income due to illness. Additionally, SU4C fulfills requests from area organizations such as the L+M Cancer Center in Waterford. and Center for Hospice Care in Norwich.

Sails Up 4 Cancer is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization dedicated to funding research, education, care and prevention for all types of cancer.

he Lyman Allyn Art Museum is pleased to announce a new addition to its permanent Louis Comfort Tiffany in New London exhibition. Periodically, the exhibit will be refreshed with new and welcomed objects. This week, a stunning Tiffany Studios Apple Blossom Table Lamp (ca.

1900-1906) arrived at the Lyman Allyn, on loan from the New York Historical Society.

This lamp resembles a miniature apple tree in bloom with a canopy of leaves and springtime blossoms sitting atop a bronze tree trunk base.

It will be on view in the Tiffany in New London exhibit for just over one year.

October 2018 marked the opening of Lyman Allyn’s new Gilded Age permanent Apple Blossom Table Lamp, ca. 1900exhibition dedicated to the life and works of 1906, Tiffany Studios, New York (1902-32), American artist and designer, Louis Comfort leaded glass, bronze. New-York Historical Tiffany. With items both from the museum’s Society, Gift of Dr. Egon Neustadt, collection and on loan, the exhibit includes nearly 100 pieces of decorative arts and fine art objects including a range of windows, lamps, paintings, period photographs, furniture, metalworks, glass samples and finished Favrile glass vessels, as well as jewelry and adornments.

Tours of the exhibition are available for groups, and may be scheduled by contacting the Education Department at 860.443.2545, ext. 2110. Museum admission is always free for New London residents. Adults are $12, seniors $9, students $5, and children under 12 are free.

Oliver Hazard Perry Completes First Program 2019

I

n an exciting proof of concept, Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island (OHPRI) recently completed the first of what will be several innovative new programs this season aboard the Tall Ship Oliver Hazard Perry (OHP).

Working under a new operational model, which promises to utilize the ship in diverse and creative ways beyond long-distance voyaging, OHPRI provided six

days of hands-on experience to nine participants in the Rhode Island Marine Trade Association’s (RIMTA) PreApprenticeship Program while the ship was in winter layup.

“Partnering for the first time with OHPRI has allowed the RIMTA Marine Trades Core Training Program to introduce its participants to an array of industry-specific training topics

that will provide them with employable skills” said RIMTA Executive Director Brian Dursi.

“While the ship is undergoing mai ntenance du r i ng a yard period, the students are learning about marine coatings, propulsion systems, hydraulics, AC/DC wiring, rigging and safety. This has been a great opportunity to utilize the resources of Rhode Island’s Official Tall Ship to

introduce Rhode Islanders to the career opportunities in the marine industry within the state.”

Program participants were identified through Skills for Rhode Island’s Future and received training both aboard OHP and at the Community Col lege of R hode Island’s Newport Campus. Contributing greatly to the student experience was the opportunity to utilize

qualit y marine indust r y products generously donated by Jamestown Distributors.

“We are th rilled that we are not only piloting a new way forward for OHP but also contributing to the prosperity and successes of Rhode Islanders,” said OH PR I CEO Capt ai n Jonathan Kabak.

he anchor at Liberty Pole Square next to the Liberty Pole has been at Mystic Seaport where they have been fitting a new wooden stock (the transverse part at the top of the shank) since the old one had rotted, They have completed the installation and now bought it back with the assistance of Mystic Shipyard’s crane truck.

It was transported back to LPS from the Seaport.

The Anchor located at Liberty Pole Square was salvaged from a vessel that went down off Cape Cod in 1896. From the four-masted schooner Calvin B. Orcutt of Manasquan New Jersey. December 22 1896.

Westerly Armory Honors Four

t was a wonderful celebratory occasion inside the Westerly armory on the evening of April 13 when 200 attendees honored four local champions: Angela Smith; Joseph Cugini; Mary Jane Patriarca DiMaio and Stephen Macomber (posthumously).

Roberta Mudge Humble, head orchestrator of this joyous evening read summarized versions of biographies for each honoree.

Guests enjoyed a delicious dinner and featured entertainment provided by The Yale Spizzwinks (?),America’s first and oldest underclassman a cappella group. Since 1914, they’ve entertained audiences around the world with their unique blend of sweet harmony and tongue-in-cheek humor.

American Legion 100th Anniversary

M

onday evening, March 11, at a regular town hall meeting, the Town Council honored the American Legion, with a Proclamation stating the longevity and service of the American Legion since March of 1919. The Amerioan Legion was formed on March 15, 1919, and was chartered in September of the same year. The Proclamation was read by Councilwoman Sharon Ahern.

"In recognition of the 100th Anniversary of its founding on March 15, 1919, when members of the expeditionary force convened in Paris for the first American Legion Caucus and,on September 16, 1919, the American Legion was chartered by the United States Congress.

The legion, which evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I, focuses on service to veterans, service members and communities. Over the years the legion has influenced considerable social change in America, won hundreds of benefits for veterans, produced many important programs for children and youth, and sponsored legislation on behalf of veterans.

However, its most single and greatest legislative achievement was "The GI Bill of Rights", which was signed into law by president Franklin D. Roosevelt on June 22, 1944.

The Westerly Town Council pays tribute to the American Legion and its continuing events on behalf of veterans and their families."

After reading of the Proclamation the members of the H.W. Merrill Post # 16, in attendance were, Commander Melvin Jolly, Adjutant Brian Benoit, Finance Officer Ray Blanda, Chaplain Ken Burton, Sr., and Legionnaire Robert Montalbano. They were then congratulated by the town counsel members and counsel committee members.

It was a good evening for the American Legion to be awarded such a Proclamation by the Town of Westerly. The American Legion along with other veteran organizations stand fast to do its duty in providing health and care benefits to all veterans, also to provide assistance for various programs throughout the community, as well.

It is our hope that all men and women who have served in the military, and are no longer serving in uniform, to step forward and join such organizations, like the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliaries.

Strength is in the number of all that belong to these organizations. It is important to be able to lobby for the rights earned by all our veterans, they deserve nothing less for the sacrifices few have made for the many to enjoy freedoms of today and tomorrow, both in Washington, DC and each state.

am an eighty-two year-old African American female, born and raised on a farm in Longtown, South Carolina. I moved to Norwich, Connecticut in 1957, where I raised my son and call it my home.

I have been involved in Civil Rights and Civil Liberties as a Leader and Advocate for fifty-five years in the City of Norwich and State of Connecticut. I worked for the Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities (CHRO) for twenty-five years.

I currently serve as Vice Chair of the City of Norwich Ellis Walter Ruley Committee. Ellis Ruley was an African American Artist who was discovered and became nationally well known as “An Outsider Artist” in 1995. In addition, I serve on the City of Norwich Sachem Fund and Norwich Disabilities Committees.

I have been a Rotarian for over twenty years. I am a founding member, a past President and Life Member of the Norwich Branch NAACP and Norwich Arts Center. I am a Life Member of the Norwich Historical Society as well as serve on a special committee of the Otis Library Board of Directors, An Evening with an Author and a member of The Bulletin Diversity Committee.

In 2017, I was the recipient of the Wi l lard M . McR ae Commun it y Diversity Award and a Writer’s Block

Lottie B.Scott Ink Humanitarian ACE Award. In 2014, I was honored by the Norwich Arts Center with the naming of the “Miss Lottie’s Jazz Café” their first Jazz Concert Series.

In addition, I have been the recipient and honoree of numerous awards including the first Lottie B. Scott Diversity Award, a N LNCN W Trai lblazer Award, the NAACP Robertsine Duncan Youth Council Pioneer Award, the University of Connecticut Presidential Humanitarian Award, Connecticut State Conference NAACP Branch W. E. B. Dubois “Lifetime Achievement Award” and the Eastern Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award.

Laraine C. Cellucci

L

araine C. Cellucci, 67, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2019 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. As she wished, she passed peacefully in her home surrounded by her family. Laraine was loved and respected by all who knew her, and she will be forever missed. She was a mom, sister, aunt (Cici), Nonni, niece, cousin and friend.

Laraine was born on October 14, 1951, the thi rd of fou r daughters bor n to John and Rita (Beauregard) Cellucci of Taf t v i l le. She at t e nded Norwich schools, graduating from Norwich Free Academy in 1969. Laraine attended Endicott College before marrying and raising her family. She started

her career in banking at Home Bank & Trust in 1983 and remained through many mergers, moving up the ranks from teller to customer service to branch manager. She retired from Bank of America in 2009 and officially retired from Dime Bank in 2016.

She was a hard worker, always givi ng 100% i n ever y thi ng she did. She was loved by her co-workers and customers alike.

Laraine was a remarkable person who maintained lasting f r ie n d s h ip s w it h s o m a ny t h roug hout he r l ife. Of t e n described as a “spitfire”, the “life of the party” and a “hot ticket”, laughter sur rounded her: a big personality in a small package. To know her was to love her. She always worked hard

the British Virgin Islands, Italy, Hawaii, California, Florida and Jamaica many times over.

However, nothing brought her greater joy than spending time with her grandchildren. From spending summers together in Groton Long Point, traveling to various locations or just texting silly messages to each other, “Nonni” was always there for them.

Laraine is survived by many loving family members, including her two daughters: Amy and her husband Gerry Leger of Noank and Ali and her husband Chris Lacey of Norwich. She leaves her three grandchildren: Jack, Matthew and Megan Lacey of Norwich. She is survived by her two sisters: Christine and her

husband Vic Estelle and Carolyn Cellucci, all of Groton Long Point. She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends. Laraine was predeceased by her younger sister Paula Cellucci in 1967 and by her parents.

Laraine’s family will receive friends on Sunday, April 28th f rom 4 -7pm at t he Myst ic Funeral Home, located on Route 1 in Mystic. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Monday, April 29th at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church, 69 Groton Long Point Road, Groton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Smilow Cancer Hospital www.ynhh.org.

Mystic Seaport Presents Comprehensive Exhibition

I

n partnership with Tate, London, from October 5, 2019, to February 23, 2020, Mystic Seaport Museum presents J.M.W. Turner: Watercolors from Tate, a major exhibition drawn from the renowned Turner Bequest of 1856, the vast legacy of art donated to Great Britain by J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), which resides today in Tate Britain.

Mystic Seaport Museum is the only North American venue for the exhibition.

The exhibition spans the entirety of Turner’s long career and, by focusing on the artist’s watercolors, provides insight into the private visionary behind the public figure. The viewer will see Turner’s watercolor practice evolve from aide to memory to a way of thinking with his brush–`for his own pleasure,’ to borrow a phrase from a contemporary admirer, the critic John Ruskin.

“Joseph Mallord William Turner is one of the great artists of the Western Canon,” notes Stephen C. White, president, Mystic Seaport Museum, the preeminent maritime museum in the United States. “In building our new exhibition center, the Thompson Building, which opened in 2016, we prepared for loans of this caliber. Now we are thrilled to be able to bring Turner’s watercolors here for visitors throughout the region and country.”

Watercolors from Tate brings together 91 watercolors, four oil paintings and one of the artist’s last sketchbooks. “Not one of these watercolors or the sketchbook would have survived had Turner had anything to do with it,” notes exhibition curator David Blayley Brown, the Tate’s Manton Senior Curator of British Art 1790-1850. Before his death, Turner sought to cement his place in history by bequeathing the contents of his studio to the British nation. He envisioned that the finished oil pictures would hang in rotation in a Turner Gallery inside the National Gallery at Trafalgar Square.

But that dream never came to pass and, in 1856, the Chancery Court overruled the artist’s wishes, saving the entire contents of the studio, including more than 30,000 watercolors and sketches stashed haphazardly in cupboards, crammed in drawers, and rolled between canvases.

he mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing, handmade quilts of valor. The awarded quilts, called QOVs, serve as tangible reminders of appreciation and gratitude to service members.

Over time the mission has expanded to include military service members and veterans regardless of the conflict, war or otherwise, in which they served.

They are lifetime awards stitched with love, prayer and healing thoughts.

The ceremony held at the Senior Center in Old Saybrook on March 29, 2019, was to honor five men. Paul Kennedy, Robert Kyhn, Ron Dangona, Jack Smith and Jim Brown.

After the ceremony the organizers were driving to Benjamin Bourn’s home to repeat the ceremony. Benjamin is homebound, but will receive the same honors.

The honored men, all from the Connecticut area, were lined up in their walkers and chairs to face the audience. They appeared to be a humble group, not used to attention.

Audience admired the many patterned military displays being worn as capes by the honorees.

The women then blessed their quilts, five quilts of the two hundred and 14 thousand gone before them. They placed their hands on the layered display and were led

by Nancy Burns, Old Saybrook Piecemakers Coordinator. As they were taken from their pillowcase-style carriers, the quilts were held up to the audience and turned to display the patterned backs.

The men were led to the front and center to be wrapped in their quilt and then to be grouped for

pictures. The men were instructed to use their quilts, not put them away in a drawer.

One man whispered quietly as he passed my chair. “I’m a crier, so don’t be alarmed by my tears.”

Punch and homemade chocolate chip cookies were served as the audience admired the many patterned military displays being worn as capes by the honorees.

The short ceremony gave family members an opportunity for their own celebrating and pictures.

Dear Paws: I’m thoroughly confused by all the «health advice» for pets that I read online. One site tells me my cats should eat only organic meats and chicken (and nothing else!), while a Facebook page tells me that my pets will do fine on a vegan diet.

And children made nests for the colored eggs. In America, the bunny arrived in the early 1700s with German immigrants in Pennsylvania. The idea of eggs at Easter was universal, but instead of a bunny, countries had foxes, cuckoo birds, hares and more. The rabbit symbolizing Easter is now a fluffy, young bunny, even though it was an adult rabbit in earlier years.

A doorstop shaped like a rabbit probably was not originally made as a symbol of Easter, but it could have been. The iron figure of a sitting rabbit was made in the early 1900s

Hooking The Reader!

ane Herr Desrosiers told the Resident she hopes readers of her novel, the absorbing Gone Fishing The Hook (Fulton Books), will become “immersed in the characters and all that is the fictional fishing town of Piney Bluffs, Maine, where the novel is set [from 1973 to 1980]. Piney Bluffs is an inland community of approximately 1,500. Its look is typical New England. The town’s reason to be is fishing.”

A masterful storyteller, Jane said her novel takes place “before cell phones and computers, and the characters have time to visit with one another and to enjoy the ride through life. This book should make my readers feel good about life again through these caring individuals.”

Born in 1950, Ethel Koontz O’Connor is the book’s main character. “Her mother passed away soon after she was born,”

Jane Herr Desrosiers Jane explained. Ethel, a reporter for The Bugle, the town’s newspaper, “grew up with her father and the surrogate mothers of Piney Bluffs.” Jumping to 1973: “Ethel has graduated from college, and, moving to 1980, we find that life and love have found her.”

Asked what she learned while writing her novel, Jane said: “I

initially thought I could write this book in a few months and learned four years later all things take time. With my writing style, I learned I cannot rush to finish a scene just because I know the ending.”

Jane continued: “I can’t say, ‘He walked through the room and sat down.’ Instead, I’ve learned my characters beg me to give my readers a vision. For example: ‘The old man shuffled as he walked into his living room. He pulled his sweater around his shoulders chasing the ghost of a chill. The overstuffed chair was tattered and today the old man’s tabby cat had claimed it for its napping place. Reaching his chair, the old man gently picked up his old friend and sat down, cradling the thin creature’s frame in his hands.”

Undiscussed But Serious Side Effects of Sleep Apnea

I

t’s estimated that 22 million Americans have sleep apnea, and that 80 percent of moderate to severe cases are undiagnosed. Also known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS), the condition affects between 5 and 20 percent of adults and 10-20 percent of children. While many are familiar with some side effects – loud snoring, disturbed sleep, and daytime sleepiness – other related issues are talked about less, but can be quite severe.

“The disruption of nasal breathing can affect digestion, brain function, mood, attention, growth, heart health, head pain, metabolism and much more,” says Dr. Edmund Lipskis, director of the Centre For Integrative Orthodontics and co-author with his wife, Dr. Lynn Lipskis, of Breathe, Sleep, Live, Smile: Integrative Treatments for TMJ/ TMD, Sleep Apnea, Orthodontics.

“But sleep apnea in children can be treated at a young age. The symptoms include irritability, lack of concentration, poor school performance, pseudo ADHD, and nighttime bed wetting.”

Breathing can stop for several seconds numerous times during the night. “This causes the brain to wake up so the sleeper can breathe,” Dr. Lipskis says. “People with OSA usually don’t remember every instance of waking up, but the result is fragmented sleep.” Dr. Lynn Lipskis adds that proper diagnosis, combined with advanced technology, can lead to successful treatment. She says there are more than 100 FDA-approved appliances for treating sleep apnea and proper selection is key to addressing the individual’s special needs. “For adults, that can mean therapy using an oral appliance,” she says. “For children, it can mean orthopedic orthodontics for airway development and correction.”

The Lipskis team points out four of the less-discussed but serious side effects of sleep apnea:

• Depression. Depression is linked with OSA and works both ways. “That is, people who are depressed are more likely to develop OSA, and people with OSA are more likely to develop depression,” Dr. Lynn Lipskis says. “One study found that slightly less than half of people with OSA showed depressive symptoms. This is not so surprising, considering that restful sleep is so important for physical and mental health.”

• Chronic pain. As with depression, chronic pain may be a cause of, or may be caused by, OSA. A study found that over half the people with OSA had chronic widespread pain and that the risk was higher in women than in men.

• Hormone disruption. Sleep is a critical time for the body to regulate hormones.

“A n impor tant one to note is the growth hormone HGH, which is produced during Stage three sleep,” Lipskis says. “It helps with cell reproduction, cell regeneration, and metabolism. If Stage III sleep is cut short, or never reached, HGH can’t perform its job. So rather than repairing itself during sleep, the body conD r. is k s tinues to break down.”

Ed mund Lip • Nocturia. This is the frequent need to urinate at night. “People with OSA are more likely to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom,” Dr. Edmund Lipskis says. “That’s because it affects the release of antidiuretic hormone (ADH), which prevents fluid from filling the bladder and prevents the need to urinate during the night. When ADH can’t do what it’s supposed to, the bladder fills and the urge to urinate appears. This is yet another way that OSA disturbs proper bodily functions and compounds disordered sleep.”

“If you suffer from OSA or suspect you do, have a sleep study done, which includes a diagnosis by a medical physician,” Dr. Lynn Lipskis says. “This is the only way to correctly diagnose OSA or other sleep disorders. OSA should be treated as a serious medical condition because the consequences go far beyond daytime fatigue.”

Perhaps You Don’t Need Divorce to Create a New Marriage

once had a colleague who did what I do: he was a marriage therapist. But this gentleman was in his early 90’s, and he had been married 70 years. He talked about his five marriages—and his four divorces—to his wife of 70 years, all with the same woman, and never with an actual divorce.

But he talked about five different marriages and four distinct divorces in a lifelong relationship.

As an example, in the beginning of their relationship, they

traveled to hostels around Europe together, learned to scuba dive together—and could never get out of the bedroom. The first of their five babies came, and he described it as like a divorce, where they had to completely reevaluate what they wanted from their marriage when the focus shifted from them to a bunch of little ones. He described empty nest as like another divorce, where they had to again completely re-negotiate what they wanted from each other and from the relationship at that station of their lives. In total, he figured there were five separate marriages and four distinct divorces in their lifelong marriage.

If you are in a conflicted and disconnected relationship or marriage, just possibly instead of repairing your relationship, maybe what you really wish for is a new marriage. And perhaps you don’t need an actual divorce in order to create that new marriage—like my colleague once

did.

Think about it for a moment. If you and your spouse/partner were to create a new marriage together, without an actual divorce, what would that new marriage consist of? Here are some suggestions about what you might consider: Permit your partner to talk without getting angry, defensive or reactive. If you fail to do this, you will make it much harder for your partner to communicate with you. But then you’re no longer in an intimate relationship, because intimacy demands that your partner talk freely to you. How do you avoid being defensive or angry?

Listen when your partner speaks, and then paraphrase back what s/he says. Continue doing this until s/he has finished. No interruptions, explanations or arguments. If you do this, your partner will feel heard. After your partner finishes, you could then speak, but do it respectfully and with no zingers, or you’ll trigger the same reluctance to talk openly

around you.

Be physically affectionate every day. Holding hands, touching, kissing, hugging and cuddling are actions that demonstrate closeness, warmth and connection. Affectionate touch is the aphrodisiac that will keep the fires burning.

Choose peace over irritation.

You have the power to respond kindly and peacefully whenever your partner irritates or angers you. Making a kind and peaceful choice instead of an angry or judgmental choice will go a long way in your partner feeling less judged, criticized or belittled by you. Consequently s/he will feel closer to you.

Make important to you that which your partner says is important to him or her. That means you value being on time, personal hygiene, managing your anger and being more polite to other people if your partner tells you that’s what s/he wants or needs.

To refuse to do this is tantamount

to telling your partner that his/her wishes, desires or needs just don’t matter to you.

Be true to your word, and tell the truth. Say what you mean, and mean what you say. Trust is one of the sacred tenets of a loving relationship, and no one can afford the price it costs to mess with it.

Make your relationship a top priority in your life. Don’t spend your “prime time” consistently occupied with other concerns, too tired, inebriated, on your devices or watching TV. Staying connected requires you to offer your undivided time, attention and presence.

Make it important to acknowledge what you like, love, admire, respect and appreciate about your partner, and say it out loud, frequently. Let your partner know what s/he does right. You’ve no doubt been brilliant at letting your mate know what s/he does wrong.

This is just a reminder that you don’t need an actual divorce in order to create a new marriage.

astern Connecticut State University student Shawn Dousis ‘19 of East Lyme was the student recipient of Eastern’s annual Ella T. Grasso Distinguished Service Award on March 27.

Among her on-campus involvements, Dousis manages the men’s ice hockey team, serves as the public relations officer for People Helping People, is the president of the Campus Ministry, and has had an integral role in running Shawn’s Cupboard, Eastern’s food pantry for students who experience food insecurity. Dousis majors in Elementary Education and liberal studies.

“Our efforts with Shawn’s Cupboard have made food insecurity at Eastern less of a problem today than it was in the past,” said Dousis, who was inspired to get the food pantry up and running after her “Geography of Food” class. Her research in the class provided insight into the prevalence of food insecurity among college students. After learning that nearly one-third of Eastern students occasionally go an entire day without eating, Dousis took it upon herself to develop the pantry.

“Little did I know so many people would become part of the team.”
