A

s 2016 comes to a close, all I can say is, “What a Year!” So, before we look forward to 2017, let’s pause and take a look back at the Good News we reported in the past 12 months.

Let’s start with Scott Gladstone and Neil Ryan on page 4.

Besides being partners at Wireless Zone, these two community-minded leaders also shared the Citizens of the Year award from the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut.

Foxwoods celebrated the 30th anniversary of the first Bingo Hall on the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation. The Tribe’s Bingo success gave way to the building of Foxwoods Resort Mario Lopez visited Foxwoods Resort Casino Casino. Read about this milestone on page 8.

Mohegan Sun was awarded a license to build and develop to host their $1M Dream Slot Tournament and Project Inspire in South Korea. Talk about “A World at Play!” I enjoyed a photo op to celebrate the moment on Sept. 5, 2016.

Read it on page 5 and then check out page 8 for news about their agreement with the town of Preston to develop the Preston Riverwalk. All this, as Mohegan Sun celebrated its 20th Anniversary. Read about it on page 16.

Area youth really did us proud in 2016. Two Norwich Tech students took the top prize in the 2016 National Automotive Technology Competition, beating out 30 other teams from across the country, and Lyme teenager Braiden Sunshine wowed national audiences on “The Voice.” See page 6.

Economic development continued in Southeast Connecticut with construction of the 20,000-square foot Prototyping and System Integration facility at General Dynamics Electric Boat, recorded on page 10.

Groton welcomed First Lady Michelle Obama and a host of other dignitaries when the USS Illinois was commissioned into service, marking another achievement for Electric Boat, and an even stronger U.S. Navy Submarine Service. What a grand way to finish our year-long celebration of “Connecticut Submarine Century.” See page 22.

A southeast Connecticut team of Mudhead sailors headed to Galveston, Texas to compete in a Regatta to benefit hospice. Since the first Hospice Regatta in 1982, more than 20,000 sailors, sponsors and volunteers have raised more than $12 million to provide hospice care to terminal patients and their families without regard for the ability to pay.

A Woman’s Life-Long Tribute to Norwich’s Fallen Heroes

Bahria Hartman has generously donated her memoriam of Norwich’s fallen heroes to Otis Library in Norwich. She began the memorial book in 1941 at age 14 when two young Norwich sailors she knew were killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor. She continued to add pages in tribute to every Norwich member of the military who died while on duty, creating a personal and meaningful collection that is now available to library visitors.

Sherryl Marie “Sunflower” Martin Remembered

A

celebration of the life of Sherryl Marie “Sunflower” Martin Dec. 19 brought together many who loved her during life and who will cherish her memory now that she has passed.

Sherryl, 53, was many things to many people: A committed Christian, a loving daughter, a devoted wife and the mother of four boys, beloved grandmother, aunt and friend, and an involved leader of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation (MPTN). She passed away Dec. 10.

“My sister was a mover and a shaker,” shared her sister, Denise Porter-Anderson. “Her energy was just everlasting. Everyone that knew her loved her. Her laughter was infectious and she always made her presence known. She’s not here but I know her spirit will always be with me.”

More than 300 attended her Celebration of Life, held at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center. Among those who honored her were Tribal Chairman of the MPTN Rodney Butler, MPTN Vice Chairman Kenny Reels, Councilwoman

Porter. She graduated from Atlantic City High School in Atlantic City, New Jersey. After moving to Connecticut, she worked as a Special Assistant for Councilwoman Fatima Dames’ office, and also held a supervisory position in the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Lounge for several years. She served on numerous committees within her Tribal community, such as Education, Economic Development, Parks & Recreation, Pow Wow, Peacemakers, and more.

Sherryl was married to her husband, Lawrence, for 19 years.

They were devoted to each other.

“The day we said, ‘I do’ was the greatest day of my life,” Lawrence shared at Sherryl’s Celebration of Life.

A proud member of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, Sherryl valued and celebrated tribal history and cultural preservation. She participated in many cultural events, especially Schemitzun and traveling to local Pow Wows. She enjoyed traditional

native foods, dancing, drumming, singing and fellowshipping with old friends and family.

Her family and friends knew her as fun-loving and active. She tirelessly taught the native traditions to her grandchildren and family.

Sherryl was pre-deceased by her father, Leroy Porter. She is survived by her mother and Tribal Elder, Laura Porter, three siblings: Michael Porter, Sharon Porter, and Denise Porter-Anderson all

of Ledyard. Also surviving her are her husband, Lawrence, four sons, David Porter, Lamar Porter (Jennifer), Maurice Jackson (Sparrow), and Lawrence Martin Jr., and one daughter Charmaine Porter, three grandchildren, Anaya Porter, Jocelyn Porter and Conner Porter, and one godson, Trinity Payne. She also leaves a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.

She was greatly loved and will be missed by many.

Mohegan Sun Adds Final Glass to New Earth Tower The Mohegan Tribe celebrated a major milestone for its $130M Earth Hotel at the construction site on April 27th. In celebration, the final piece of glass was lifted by a heavy-lift crane and placed on the hotel symbolizing the completion of the hotel’s exterior.

May 18 – 31 John Whitman “Whit” Davis, 1924 – 2016, Remembered Beloved local farmer John Whitman “Whit” Davis passed away May 4 at the age of 91. He is remembered for his environmental stewardship, his outstanding service to agriculture, and for his community spirit. He was the Westerly Pawcatuck Chamber of Commerce 2015 “Citizen of the Year.” His Davis-Stanton Homestead farm was established in 1654.

aj. Gen. Thaddeus J. Martin, the Adjutant General and Commander of the Connecticut National Guard, was pleased that 65 members of the 1109th Theater Aviation Sustainment Maintenance Group were officially welcomed home in a formal Freedom Salute ceremony at the unit’s facility in Groton, Sunday, December 18, 2016 at 10:00am.

The 1109th TASM-G deployed to Afghanistan and Kuwait in support of NATO’s Resolute Support Mission. There are only four TASMG’s in the nation, and Connecticut’s is responsible for providing technical and mechanical support to the rotary-wing assets of 14 states.

During its 11-month deployment, the TASMG was responsible for maintenance and contract oversight that proved crucial, providing supported units with safe, reliable aircraft.

“A Freedom Salute ceremony to officially celebrate a unit’s overseas achievements is always made better knowing that these brave men and women will be with their families for the holidays,” Maj. Gen. Martin said. “With this, we focus our attention on the nearly 100 Connecticut National Guard Airmen currently deployed, and the 300 that will be joining them in the near future.”

“Hospice House will fill a critical gap in the continuum of end-of-life care here in Eastern Connecticut, by providing care to hospice patients who are too sick to be cared for at home.”

Center for Hospice Care will build Hospice House as part of its Norwich-based campus, on 7.5 acres of land that was donated to the organization in 2008 by Sts. Peter and Paul Church of Norwich. Hospice House will include a toy-filled children’s playroom, a chapel, a library, and a dining café with food service. All 12 patient suites will be fully private singles and will open onto a courtyard garden. When all 12 patient suites are in full operation, Hospice House will annually serve 700-800 patients.

• Preheat oven to 325 F. • In large pan, place ham flat-side down and score a diamond pattern about 1/8-inch deep into any fat.

Season with pepper and bake 1 1/2 hours.

• In small saucepan over medium heat, combine jelly, butter and thyme, whisking occasionally until start to boil, 1-2 min. Cover and set aside. In medium bowl, combine grapes and shallots.

Set aside.

• Baste ham with jelly mixture. Continue baking, basting with jelly mixture and pan juices about every 15 min. When ham’s internal temperature reaches 120F, add grapes and shallots to roasting pan, stirring to coat with pan juices. Continue baking until internal temperature reaches 140F, 15-18 min. per pound.

Remove ham from oven, transfer to cutting board and let rest for 15 min.

• Slice enough ham to serve and arrange on plates or platter. Season grapes and serve remaining grape mixture on side.

I

t started somewhat accidentally but in hindsight, it happened through a very fortuitous series of events. I enrolled at The University of Rhode Island in 1977 thinking I wanted to be a Naval Architect. I quickly realized that wasn’t for me, and ended up getting a degree in Economics, with no intention of applying it in the “real world”.

While at URI, I spent most of my free time at WRIU, the campus radio station, selling advertising among other things. My first post-college job was selling ads for a local arts publication. That led to a series of sales and marketing jobs that culminated in working for an advertising agency, which specialized in marketing for financial services companies. I serviced banks, insurance companies and mutual funds. When the head of marketing position with one of my clients – a bank – became available, I was offered, and accepted, the job.

It was 1991. The bank had six branches and about $300 million in assets. Over the next 19 years, the bank and I would grow together. I was fortunate to have fantastic bosses and great co-workers, and to lead my department through a lot of growth and change. We tripled the number of branches, added a call center, and got into online banking. I also had the opportunity to lead a number of corporate initiatives, including strategic planning and bank-wide sales.

In 2010, I was fortunate to be hired as President & CEO of Chelsea Groton Bank, replacing Duncan Stoddard, a legend in CT banking and our region. The five-plus years I’ve spent here have been the most rewarding of my career. It’s a very special place—both the Bank and the region. As a mutual bank, the connection to our customers and our communities is extraordinary. And the diversity of the area - demographically, geographically, economically - is really exciting. It’s an incredibly vibrant community with a rich history.

Finding time to serve Community involvement is one of my favorite aspects of working for a local bank. It’s a great way to meet people and feel the pulse of the world around you. Right now I serve on seven boards: L&M Healthcare System, Chamber of Commerce of Eastern CT, the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, the Norwich Free Academy Foundation, the Norwich

Communit y Development Corporation, URI Harrington School of Communication and Media, and the Providence Mutual Insurance Company.

Those are in addition to our Bank Board and Bank Foundation Board.

I’ve tried to be strategic about being involved in a wide variety of causes spread throughout our market area. I feel lucky to be involved in these organizations, and I learn so much from their talented management teams and my fellow board members. There are many common issues, regardless of size or organization type, and being involved in so many organizations allows for cross pollination of ideas.

Juggling a full time job, community involvement and family is definitely a challenge. Basic time management skills and constantly re-setting priorities allow me to keep up. I have to give a huge amount of credit to my assistant, Sue Olszewski, who works magic behind the scenes, and to my team at Chelsea Groton. They really do all of the heavy lifting at the Bank.

Chelsea Groton Bank history The Groton Savings Bank was founded in Mystic in 1854 and The Chelsea Savings Bank, named for a section of downtown Norwich, was founded in Norwich in 1857. The two banks merged in 1982 and became the bank we know today.

We have copies of the first bank charters, which list the original corporators, who were all community leaders at the time.

It’s humbling to drive around the

region and see their names on streets, buildings and businesses, and realize what an impact these folks had on the area. Each bank began as a “mutual” organization, formed for the good of their customers and the communities they served. I’m very proud that 162 years later, we are still true to that original mission.

We’re currently more than $1 billion in assets, have 15 locations, and offer customers all the modern conveniences. I know our founders would be proud that we still focus 100% of our attention on making our customers successful, and helping to make the communities we serve better through our contributions of time and money.

Besides a commitment to service, and investing in the technology that helps make banking more efficient, we place a huge emphasis on customer and community education. For our 150th anniversary, we created a full-time Community Education Officer position. We offer on-going, varied financial literacy curriculum for all age ranges, in our branches and at community centers, senior centers, schools and libraries.

Attracting the next generation of customers Millennials are certainly a hot topic and like many other companies, they’re a group that we’re interested in targeting. The average age of a Chelsea Groton customer today is 54, so getting younger for us is about more than just millennials. We think a lot about attracting Gen X, Gen Y and

younger “Boomers”, as well as small businesses.

From a product standpoint there are clearly some differences among the generations. In very broad terms, younger folks are interested in free checking with a debit card that has free access to ATMs. They’re also looking for “starter” products like credit cards and car loans. As they move through life, mortgages and money market accounts start to pique their interest and eventually, investment products.

In addition to offering a competitive set of products that spans the changing needs of our customers, we make personal connections with people, to help them find success at every life stage. We do a lot of “handshake” marketing in the community, sponsor programs, host seminars, attend events, and more. Advertising and marketing does a great job of creating awareness and building the brand, but the real business is won through the referrals we get from providing extraordinary service, and going above and beyond to help people Personnel training and how the bank selects its candidates The key to providing exceptional service is to start with great people, and then give them the tools they need to be successful. Knowledge is one of the most important tools we can provide. We are big believers in programs like the CT School, the National School, CFT, the local Chamber Leadership program, professional certifications and our own programs – Chelsea Groton

University and the Chelsea Professional Management Series.

Senior managers nominate employees for the CT School, the National School and the Leadership program. Together, we work to identify talented team members with potential for growth, and decide who we’re going to send. We think about it the way a professional baseball organization thinks about their farm system.

We have our own Chelsea Groton University that combines a host of in-person and online learning opportunities. We use an online portal to manage the program which includes all required annual employee training modules. It also offers specific curriculum based on job function, soft skills training, technical training, and certificate programs.

In addition, we launched the Chelsea Professional Management Series (CPMS) two years ago, and graduated our first class last fall. As part of the CPMS, managers attend 20 courses over an 18-month period, on topics such as leadership strategies, communication, management during change, and more.

We have a generous education reimbursement program. I’m always proud to attend the annual CFT dinners and see how many team members have earned certificates. There are also a number of employees working on their bachelor’s degrees part time while working for us, and we’re happy to make that financially possible for them.

At the end of the day, this is a service business. That means we are completely dependent on the members of our team to take care of our customers. Being able to provide the right guidance and advice requires knowledge.

Education and experience are the only ways to get there. There really aren’t any shortcuts, so we make the investment for the long-term good of our customers and our company.

Can I Make My Husband Help?

ear Neil: I need help. I find myself being frustrated and resentful toward my husband. I have been taking care of and providing for our family all of our married life (15 years), while he hops from one job to another, or doesn’t work at all. I am currently in debt, and I can’t just stop paying for our livelihood because my income is essential for our survival as a family. My children are also frustrated with him because they have to go without my time and attention when I work. Can you offer any advice? — Resentful in South Africa

Dear Resentful: I am unclear if your husband’s lack of full-time employment is because he isn’t motivated to work more, or if he hasn’t been successful in finding work. The difference is important, because a lack of motivation speaks to him not taking his employment (and your family’s financial situation) seriously, whereas not being able to find steady employment is frustrating and deflating, and could cause him to feel that getting a steady job is hopeless.

That being said, it sounds as if you wish to impress upon him that a greater contribution from him is needed so that you don’t feel overburdened and taken advantage of. This is a problem many families encounter, except traditional gender roles are flipped for you and your husband.

It used to be that it was more common for the man to work and for the woman to be in the supportive role. But in your case, if you have the burden of largely (or entirely) supporting the family, what can your husband do in order to contribute in other extremely valuable ways?

In addition to possibly getting more serious about working, you could discuss with your husband how he could be a better supporting spouse and parent. Perhaps more household duties (shopping, cleaning, dishes, cooking, driving the kids around and helping them with homework, etc.) need to fall to him—freeing you up to come home with way less domestic obligations and responsibilities.

If your husband is simply unmotivated to work or unwilling to carry a larger part of the tasks or household chores, that would indicate that he expects to be taken care of by you, and does not assume that he will have to offer an equal contribution back. You could simply raise this discussion with him, explain how you’re feeling and what you would like him to do differently, and see if he is willing to rise to the occasion. If he is unwilling, then you have to decide exactly what you’re willing to live with, and what’s in the best interests of your family.

I

s waiting an effective strategy for success? Have you heard people say they are waiting for things to get better? Or, that they are waiting for their luck to improve? Perhaps you’ve seen people waiting for the right time or waiting until they are in a proper frame of mind or waiting until they are motivated.

There’s a virtually endless list of things people are waiting for: other people, circumstances, attitude, Bryan Golden timing, the weather, the economy, Author “Dare To Live Without money, etc. The problem with waitLimits” ing is that it’s a passive activity. The things people wait for may or may not happen.

However, sometimes there are situations where it is prudent to wait.

Waiting to save up enough money for a discretionary purchase rather than accumulating debt that you can’t readily pay off. Waiting for a storm to end before going sailing. Waiting for a lake to freeze before walking on the ice. Waiting until you have the appropriate skills and knowledge before undertaking a new venture.

Even when waiting appears to be a prudent strategy, you can have contingency plans and alternative courses of action. So, you can be proactive even while waiting. Additionally, while you are waiting for one thing, you can be taking action on something else.

You can’t control the environment but you do have control over your response. Idle waiting leaves you at the whim of fate. You are then like a cork floating on the ocean waiting to see which way the waves, currents, and winds take you.

Waiting is passive. You put yourself in a position to accept whatever comes your way. You can hope all you want, but hope by itself is like playing the lottery. Things may work out in your favor but the odds are against you.

Paralysis by analysis keeps you waiting. Since you can’t decide on the best course of action, you do nothing. So not only are you waiting for things to change, you are now waiting to figure out what you should do, if anything.

It’s easy to slip into waiting mode when feeling overwhelmed or uncertain as to the appropriate path to take. Rather than waiting, get your mind into gear searching for possible strategies. The process of seeking options transforms you from passive mode to active. List everything you can think of. At this point, don’t evaluate any idea as being either good or bad. The longer your list, the better the chances of identifying the appropriate strategy.

Once you have your list, start to evaluate and prioritize each idea.

Coat Drives Help to Warm the Holidays for Adults and Children

uring D e c e m b e r, the United Way of Southeastern CT worked to bring warmth to anyone in New London County in need of a coat. Literally, thousands of coats poured into the Gemma E. Moran Food Center where they were made ready for distribution. Before being distributed to agencies, the coats were provided through coat drives from: City of New London Unions; Weight Watchers, Mohegan Sun; Pfizer, Inc.; Chelsea Groton Bank; and Applied Physical Sciences.

residents. School and city employees were moved to respond with open hearts. Coats were brought to the Fire Department which was the sorting-site, where 15 volunteers worked tirelessly for an entire day. Sorted and ready to go, the coats were distributed quickly to schools, agencies, and designated locations.

Coats from other community drives came into Food Center in bags which were later separated by volunteers into categories. No one was fully prepared for the numbers and variety of coats. Coats poured in, many of them new or freshly dry-cleaned, to be given away.

As temperatures dropped and the weather became chilly, there was growing recognition of what a warm coat can mean.

As the work continued into December to sort, catalog and

distribute coats, agencies picked them up on behalf of their clients.

People came directly to the Food Center to get coats for themselves and others. By mid-December, remaining coats were given to Tommy Toy to be given out at all their locations.

Whatever remains after the work is over, will be put on the Live United Way Van to be available at Mobile Food Pantry Sites across New London county Sharon Peccini, Campaign Lead at the United Way said, “We are very fortunate to live in a generous and caring community with a volunteer heart. So many of our neighbors will not go cold this winter because of the community.

Those who conducted these drives and those who gave are Living United.”

Veteran Kenneth Reels Honored for Giving

Kenneth Reels, 82nd Airborne Veteran, was inducted into the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame on Friday, Nov. 4. It is just the latest in a series of honors and awards he has received, but the humble Vice Chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation Gaming and Athletic Commission at Foxwoods Casino says that he feels good when he is helping people. “That’s just what I love doing.”

he Connecticut National Guard took pause and recognized centuries of achievement during a short celebration commemorating the National Guard’s 380th birthday, at the William A. O’Neill Armory, Dec. 13.

In keeping with tradition, the state’s oldest and youngest soldiers present joined together to slice the cake.

He will retire on Dec. 31 after 40 years of dedicated service to his state and nation.

Governor Dannel Malloy had designated Oct. 2015 - Oct 2016 as a year-long celebration of the Connecticut Submarine Century, honoring the success of America’s First and Finest Submarine Base and Naval Submarine School.

With Ruffles and flourishes, cannon salutes, and a call by First Lady Michelle Obama to “Man our ship and make her alive,” the nation’s newest nuclear powered submarine moved from ownership by its builder, General Dynamics Electric Boat, to ownership by the United States Navy. The First Lady Michelle Obama is the Ship Sponsor. The traditional commissioning ceremony was held Oct. 29 at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton.

Happy To Give! elix Rappaport, President & CEO, Foxwoods Resort Casino, and Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council Chairman Rodney Butler, spread holiday cheer in New London in support of the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut and the Tommy Toy Fund. Nearly 15,000 toys were collected and donated to local children and families as part of Foxwoods’ 3rd Annual Stuff the Bus Campaign.

here is no better Christmas than one spent in your own home, and that is exactly what Habitat for Humanity provided for new homeowner Brandishea Moses and her children.

A dedication ceremony at the new Stonington home Dec. 11 was truly a celebration of hard work as well as support by area businesses and individuals. Habitat for Humanity provides affordable, new housing to qualified applicants. The homeowner works with volunteers to build the home. Donations support the work of Habitat for Humanity.

Brandishea is a full time working single mother of two children. Her daughter Shya, is 9 years old. She loves to read books and is developing into a great poet. She was recently accepted into a school program that was designed for gifted and talented students who are mature enough to handle their school work at a higher level. Shya will be in the 5th grade this September and will be completing 6th grade work. Her son, TuQuan, is two years old, he has a tremendous amount of energy and loves music. Brandishea has been working at Dime Bank for four years and is a Commercial Servicing Representative. She also attends New England college of Business with a major in Business Administration with concentration in Banking and Finance. She graduated with an Associates Degree in April of 2014 and is currently enrolled in the bachelor’s degree program. Her career goal is to become a Commercial Loan Officer.
