You had to be proven to be a lady with style and manners.

This old reporter recently met a “lady, a volunteer with no use for the new ways of technology.” She is Pat Schneider of Old Saybrook, a member of the Board at the Estuary Council of Seniors and longtime volunteer from New York with no need for a car or other such amenities. She recruits in her quiet manner by what she calls “cold calls,” reaching out with written notes, phone calls and sometimes face-to-face encounters. There is always a thank you note, followed by a poem connecting the event and the person’s involvement.

Pat calls herself the Entertainment Program Coordinator of the Lunchtime Programs at the Estuary which she labels “Lunch with Pat.” There is no budget to pay the speakers, musicians, dancers and representatives from local organizations. To date though, she has hosted Channel 3 weatherman Scott Haney, Janet Peckinpaugh, former TV anchor, now real estate broker for historic homes, First Selectman Carl Fortuna Jr. and the Estuary’s own vocalist Kathy Clark. On the docket for Fall is Old Saybrook’s State Representative. Flyers are posted on bulletin boards at the front entrance. The day is always

The Estuary is a community recreational and wellness center serving individuals 50 years and older. There are exercise classes and a fully equipped gym. They offer day and out-of-state trips.

ark your calendar for 6:30 pm on August 3rd for the 38th Annual “Tribute to America” taking place at the Norwichtown Green in Norwich. The event, sponsored by the Richard E. Hourigan VFW Post 594 and Auxiliary, honors all U.S. military personnel, active duty and retired, and first responders-police, fire and medical.

J o h n Wa g g o n e r, V i c e President of the Norwich Area Veterans Council, will be the evening’s Master of Ceremonies.

The highlight of the speaking program will be the keynote provided by Dr. Linda Schwartz, the former Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs for Policy and Planning, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. She was nominated to this position by President Barack Obama.

Dr. Schwartz began her military career in the US Air Force Nurse Corps in 1968. She retired

or the first time in more than 20 years, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy will add a new academic program. Beginning with the Class of 2022, the Academy will offer an academic major in Cyber Systems that will allow a generation of young leaders to better meet the emerging operational and support needs of the service.

In Fall 2018, the Service Academy will open a new 2,000 sq. foot cyber lab that will house dedicated servers, a working laboratory and a uniquely designed classroom. In addition, a variety of cyber-related summer internships will be made available to

interested and qualified cadets.

The Academy Cyber Team is open to cadets with an interest in developing high-level defensive and offensive cyber skills, and practices during weekday sports periods and receives required sports credit for participation.

Veterans Wall Unveiled At Harbor Village story & photo

by Jon Persson ayne Rioux of Hartford Healthcare presents an American flag, folded into the triangle and stars of a military honor guard, to the Harbor Village Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. The flag, he explains to a gathering of veteran and active duty military personnel, is from the funeral services for a World War II veteran held the previous week, for whom no one was left to accept the flag. Wayne accepted this last tribute to long ago service with the promise to deliver it to a deserving veteran’s group, a promise kept this day.

The occasion is the dedication of a wall to the eleven veterans who reside at Harbor Village, made with a ceremony attended by uniformed officers and enlisted of the nation’s military. Wayne, himself a veteran, wears the dress uniform of his service years. They are joined by dignitaries and representatives, New London’s Mayor Passero, Senator Paul Formica among them, and the staff and nurses of Harbor Village.

At the center of the ceremonies are the ten veterans, from all branches of America’s military, plus the Royal Air Force of Great Britain. As the attending audience is seated, the veterans enter, lead by Cory Ann Armstrong playing bagpipe.

A medley of military anthems is provided by the Silvertone Chorus of the Groton Senior Center, followed by a solemn flag retirement ceremony. Finally, the ten veterans move to the lobby, where they unveil the new Veteran’s Wall in a moment of ref lection before the gathered audience joins them.

Combat Injured Veterans Tax Fairness Act of 2016

T

he Combat-Injured Veterans Tax Fairness Act of 2016, enacted December 2016, allows certain veterans who received lump sum disability severance payments additional time to file a claim for credit or refund of an overpayment attributable to the disability severance payment.

The law directed the Secretary of Defense to identify disability severance payments paid after January 17, 1991, that were included as taxable income on Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, but

were later determined to be nontaxable and to provide notice of the amount of that payment. The Department of Defense is mailing letters to affected veterans (letters 6060-A and 6060-D) in July 2018.

What you need to do You must complete and file IRS Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, for the tax year the disability severance payment was made carefully following the instructions in the notice mailed by the

Department of Defense in July 2018. You must mail the claim generally by the later of: • One year from the date of the Department of Defense notice, or • Three years after the due date for filing the original return for the year the disability severance payment was made, or • Two years after tax was paid for the year the disability severance payment was made.

If you did not receive the notice from the Department of

Defense and you received a disability severance payment after January 17, 1991, that you reported as taxable income, you can still file a claim as long as you attach the necessary documentation to your Form 1040X. You may contact the Defense Finance and Accounting Services to obtain your documentation for submission with the required Form 1040X. David Foster, Iconic Producer and Owner of the Former Willimantic Inn To Open Shaboo Stage Will Provide Endless Entertainment Possibilities

F

ormer quiet mill town Willimantic will receive a burst of entertainment energy once the new “Shaboo Stage” in Jilson Square opens during the first week of August.

The $820,00 cutting-edge entertainment venue with seating for up to 9,000 guests will open with spectacular artists José Feliciano and Peabo Bryson on Friday, August 3rd. American Led Zeppelin review band Get the Led Out and the Shaboo AllStars will follow with a concert on Saturday, August 4th.

David Foster, former owner and promoter of the legendary Willimantic Inn said, “We have brought the Hollywood Bowl to Willimantic.”

David and his partner Bruce John collaborated with local Willi mant ic a nd Wi ndham County officials to develop the new facility in the heart of town.

State and town grants in addition to a $100,000 private donation from the Lester and Phyllis Foster Family Foundation made this project possible.

The iconic Willimantic Inn, which opened in 1971, hosted a wealth of industry-leading artists including; Aerosmith, AC/ DC, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, BB King, Miles Davis, Journey, Keith Richards, The Marshall Tucker Band, Dr. John, Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker, Hound Dog Taylor and many others. The club became so popular during the 70s, Boston After Dark named the inn “New England’s biggest club not in Boston.”

The outdoor stage is part of Willimantic’s revitalization that will also include a new Senior and separate Community Center in this section of town. David added, “People really enjoy concerts but they absolutely love outdoor concerts.”

David has produced more than 3,000 concerts from 1971-82.

Foster originally started in the music industry at the age of 14.

The Arc Community Garden

T

he Arc New London County received $750 from the Ledyard Rotary Foundation to support its new Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) initiative on 1.5 acres of land donated by the Town of Ledyard. The CSA garden will be an expansion of The Arc NLC’s successful Farm Stand on Rt. 117 in Ledyard and will be able to provide fresh produce for up to 30 families. The Farm Stand grows and sells organic produce throughout the season and is run by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) as part of The Arc NLC’s Employment Transition program, which hires and trains people with IDD in a variety of fields that lead to competitive employment with area businesses.

Bluefish 5K 21st Annual

“And they’re off!” to a fast start at the Steward’s ACE Hardware Bluefish 5K. This year will be the 21st Annual run on Saturday, August 18.

he Clinton Chamber of Commerce and Shoreline Community Women, Inc. will host the 21th Annual Steward’s Ace Hardware 5K Road Race on Saturday, August 18.

The 5k (3.1-mile) race course begins and ends at the Jared Eliot Middle School, 69 Fairy Dell Road in Clinton. Start time is 9 am, with race day registrations beginning at 7:30 am. Mile markers will be measured as such from the course certification. There are several water stations along the route. Last year’s race drew over 300 entrants.

Registration is $25 per runner through August 15 and from August 16 to race day, registration will be $30. Registration is online at www.tinyurl.com/Register2018BF5K. Money raised through this race directly benefit Shoreline Community Women and the Clinton Chamber of Commerce. The money goes back into the community through free events, donations, and programs both organizations hold throughout the year.

iberty Bank has donated a total of $27,000 to local agencies providing emergency or transitional housing for homeless families and individuals in its market area. Agencies in New London County receiving funding included: Covenant Shelter of New London, Safe Futures, the New London Homeless Hospitality Center, the Bethsaida Community, Martin House, Thames River Community Services, and Always Home (formerly Mystic Area Shelter and Hospitality, Inc.).

Liberty’s Giving Circle program sets aside $100 for every mortgage application received by the bank during April and May, and then donates the accumulated funds.

With the distribution of $27,000 from this year’s Giving Circle, the total donated under the program since its inception in 1994 rose to almost $595,000.

“The Giving Circle makes a connection between the excitement of homeownership and the promise of better things to come for those needing a safe place to live,” said Shirley Theriault, senior vice president of Liberty Bank’s Retail Lending group.

Antique & Classic Boat Rendezvous

M

ystic Seaport Museum will hold its annual Antique & Classic Boat Rendezvous Saturday and Sunday, July 28-29.

T he event showcases high-quality antique vessels, including cruisers, sailboats, and runabouts. The classic vessels will create a colorful gathering along the Museum’s waterfront.

Visitors are invited to see the displayed vessels Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday 9 am to 12:30 pm. An award competition will recognize excellence in restoration, authenticity, and workmanship.

This year, the Museum will feature vessels designed by John G. Alden, one of the leading naval architects of the 20th century. After apprenticing under Starling Burgess and B.B. Crowninshield, he opened his own office in 1909 and he went on to design more than 900 vessels ranging from small dinghies to power vessels to famous racing schooners.

The Rendezvous concludes Sunday at Noon with a parade of the classic boats down the Mystic River. Each will be announced on the shore at Mystic River Park as it passes through the Mystic River Bascule Bridge. The boats then make their way down river to Fishers Island Sound in what has become a highlight of the Mystic summer season.

Bruce’s Bargains

INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup olive oil • 1/2 cup ranch dressing • 3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce • 1 tbsp minced fresh rosemary • 2 tsp salt • 1 tsp lemon juice • 1 tsp white vinegar • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper, or to taste • 1 tsp white sugar, or to taste (optional) • 5 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cut into 1 inch cubes

DIRECTIONS • In a medium bowl, stir together the olive oil, ranch dressing, Worcestershire sauce, rosemary, salt, lemon juice, white vinegar, pepper, and sugar. Let stand for 5 minutes. Place chicken in the bowl, and stir to coat with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

• Preheat the grill for medium-high heat. Thread chicken onto skewers and discard marinade.

• Lightly oil the grill grate.

Grill skewers for 8 to 12 minutes, or until the chicken is no longer pink in the center, and the juices run clear.

MPTN Tribal Chairman Rodney Butler Appointed Interim CEO For Foxwoods Resort Casino

T

he Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council announced the appointment of its Chairman, Rodney Butler, to assume the role of Interim CEO for Foxwoods® Resort Casino effective immediately, pending State Key License approval.

During the interim period, Rodney will continue serving as Tribal Council Chairman while leading Foxwoods’ executive team. A recruitment process is underway to select and appoint a permanent leadership candidate, and a new President and CEO for Foxwoods will be announced later this fall.

Rodney holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from the Un iversit y of Connect icut where he played Defensive Back for the UCONN Huskies’ football team. Pr ior to service on Tribal Council, Rodney worked in Finance at Foxwoods

Resort Casino. He later became C h a i r m a n o f t h e Tr i b a l Business Advisory Board; an executive body responsible for overseeing the Tribe’s non-gaming businesses and commercial properties. Rodney was actively involved in resor t expansion planning at Foxwoods as well as the Tribe’s Phase 7 housing development on the reservation and is a founding Trustee of the Mashantucket ( We s t e r n) P e q u o t Tr i b e Endowment Trust. he Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut announces an unprecedented level of college scholarships made possible through the generosity of donors who believe in the power of education to change lives. More than 260 students from its 42 communities in Eastern Connecticut were selected by The Foundation’s Scholarship Committees to receive over $700,000 in single and multi-year awards.

“We are very fortunate that our donors share with us a resolve to remove the financial barriers for area students as they pursue their educational dreams and to create opportunities where few to none exist,” said Maryam Elahi, President and CEO of the Community Foundation. “Every child is important and whether it is through the arts, sciences, humanities or technical/vocational training, education is the catalyst for a brighter future for them and for our society.”

Growing For Community

Emma Brunetti and Christian Weinrich from Eastern Connecticut Garden Association delivered the plants and talked to people about plant care.

T

he Connecticut Community Garden Association (CCGA) and Malerba’s Farm have again reached out to United Way of Southeastern Connecticut to provide food bearing plants for community use. Plants were delivered to the United Way office on the 11th of July. Youth volunteers and staff at the United Way began watering and caring for the plants as soon as they were delivered, having been trained last year. Malerbas Farm gave the plants through the Garden Association to distribute for the Mobile Food Pantry, the Food Center, the partner agencies and organizations that use them.

Virginia Mason The Eastern Connecticut Garden Association and President and CEO its members exist to “encourage and support commu- United Way of Southeastern CT nity gardens in Eastern Connecticut to create healthful food choices for all residents and to increase food security in the region.” They “believe that bountiful amounts of affordable, healthy food can and should be grown in and around Eastern Connecticut using simple, environmentally appropriate technology and renewable resources.” One of the CCGA values “is to support sustainable growing practices as essential to our responsible participation in the restoration and preservation of our ecosystem.”

The Eastern Connecticut Garden Association was started in 2008, by Dave Fairman, a well-known community activist. He learned from Homeland Security a few years ago, that residents of Eastern Connecticut had only a 3-day supply of food available to them at any time. The ECCGA was established to “continue the Community Garden movement and to work with existing organizations, schools, and neighborhoods to establish “new gardens to feed residents.” and “to glean unharvested produce for distribution to local food banks.” The Association has been the catalyst for more than 100 Community Gardens.

United Way of Southeastern Connecticut invites partner and funded organizations to drop by and take away all the remaining plants. They are going fast! The United Way of Southeastern Connecticut is noted for having started the local New London County Food Policy Council. It is the only United Way which operates a Food Center which was started 30 years ago by Gemma E. Moran. Food is a key feature of United Way’s impact in the Community. United Way staff note that CCGA and its partners are critical to the effort to sustain the supply of healthy food.

Learn by Teaching

O

ne of the best ways to learn is by teaching.

Teaching forces you to really understand the material in order to relay it. Learning only for yourself is not as effective as learning in order to help someone else.

The process of teaching forces you to really understand the material you are conveying.

You must first have a thorough comprehension yourself before you can share it with someone else. Teaching is a powerful learning technique when you first strive to thoroughly comprehend the information yourself. Effective teachers are those who know what they are talking about. The Bryan Golden best teachers teach by example because they have Author “Dare To Live Without Limits” already successfully used the material they are sharing.

Whenever you help another person solve a problem or overcome an obstacle, both of you learn and benefit. Be willing to even go out of your way to offer assistance.

Whenever you give, you also receive. Thinking only of yourself is shortsighted.

A teacher provides information. You can only offer solutions, ideas, and insight.

How someone reacts is up to them. Each student decides what to do with the knowledge. Some students pay attention while others don’t care.

A teacher cannot force someone to learn, nor should a teacher be offended by disinterested students. There is no point to arguing with someone who ignores what you offer or disagrees with you.

Poor teachers have trouble making their information easily understood.

Incompetent teachers provide misinformation. Successful teachers teach from experience so that their students benefit and are able to utilize what is being taught.

It’s possible for someone to feel teaching is an imposition or a waste of valuable time. This attitude harms you. Helping others is a great way to attract the things you want into your life. However the help you offer must not have any strings attached.

You want to provide assistance because of what it will do for the other person, not for what you can get out of it.

Make sure any information you give is accurate. If you don’t know an answer, either say so or find out what it is from a reliable source. Bad information is worse than no information. Teaching is a way to help others while helping yourself. It is not a strategy to show off.

As much as you may know something and be willing to teach others, not everyone is receptive to being helped. Some people don’t want help or don’t think they need it. As a teacher, you offer assistance. You never pressure someone into taking it. If your offer is declined, respect the other person’s wishes.

You can also learn from the people you help. Insight can be gained from the questions they ask, the problems they have, suggestions they make, or any confusion they experience. Their perspective may be different than yours. Seek to understand how and why they think the way they do. How have they been affected by their experiences?

Learning is an endless circle. At times, it may be impossible to differentiate between the student and the teacher. This is especially true when teaching children.

Your own spirit gets recharged through interaction with them. You should marvel at their unquenchable curiosity along with how they are constantly amazed by each new discovery.

Regardless of the student’s age, the best teachers teach by example. A powerful message is delivered when your words and actions reinforce each other. Be open to those who show a genuine desire for assistance. Be generous with your time.

he Adirondack style started with a chair in 1903. Many wealthy folks from the East Coast wanted a cool place to live for the summer, so they started building homes in the Adirondack mountain area.

Thomas Lee was vacationing in the Adirondack town of Westport, New York, and he wanted comfortable outdoor chairs for his house. He made the chair from 11 pieces of wood and finally decided on the reclining chair with wide armrests now known as the Adirondack or Westport chair. Lee had a local carpenter friend named Harry Bunnell, who made the chairs to sell. Harry patented the design in 1905. Lee never received any of the profits. The

houses in the Adirondacks led to other pieces of furniture that were made of local wood, twigs and carving as decoration. The style was very much like Western or Rustic style today.

It originally was all handmade of local wood by nearby carpenters. Sometimes there was added paint, or cut-out and applied figures like stars or animal profiles. Pieces are heavy-looking and since they are made of logs, they are heavy to move.

An Adirondack bookcase on chest was in a Skinner auction and sold for $6,150. It’s definitely homemade and one of a kind.

Connecticut’s Giants!

ric D. Lehman told the Resident what was most challenging about writing his book Connecticut Vanguards: Historic Trailblazers & Their Legacies (History Press) “was E r ic narrowing down the choices. D .

To do so, I had to really zero in on what effects these people had on their fields, on Connecticut, and on the world.” Eric’s book focuses on individuals who, despite their “seemingly radical differences in philosophy and personality…did trailblazing work within the confines of our small state.”

Eric was prompted to write his book because, he points out, “I have written many books about Connecticut, and I kept encountering these remarkable people, our neighbors in time and space, and wanted to gather them all together.” Ella T. Grasso, Marian Anderson, and Katharine Hepburn—all of whom “grew up among the little hills and winding rivers of Connecticut or spent a significant portion of their working lives here”—are three of the twenty-four people included in his book.

Bor n of im migrant parents who settled in Windsor Locks, Ella Tambussi married Thomas Grasso in 1942. Elected Governor of Connecticut in 1975, she served until 1980 and “was considered as a possible candidate for vice-president.,” Eric writes. “And then disaster.

She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and it was terminal.” She died on February 5, 1981.

The first woman to be elected as Governor of Connecticut, Ella T. Grasso, Eric writes, “[broke] a glass ceiling of a position that now seems natural for any woman to have.”

In 1940, Philadelphia born contralto Marian Anderson (1897-1993), of whom conductor Arturo Toscanini once said “‘a voice like hers is heard once in a hundred years,” married Orpheus Fisher and then

bought a one-hundred-acre farm in Danbury. Then on January 7, 1955, “She played Ulrica in Verdi’s opera Un Ballo in Maschera,” Eric writes, “becoming the first African-American to sing at this fabled [Metropolitan] opera house in sevent y-one years.”

Among her awards, and there were many, was receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President John F. Kennedy in 1963, “but it was a somber ceremony,” Eric says, “coming two weeks after Kennedy’s assassination.” Over the course of her long, distinguished career Marian A nderson shat tered nu merous racial barriers for AfricanAmerican singers.

Actor Katharine Hepbur n (1 9 0 7 -2 0 0 3) w a s b o r n i n Hartford. During a film career that began in 1932, she received twelve Best Actress nominations, winning four times. One of her most memorable movies was Howard Hawks’ 1938 Bringing Up Baby. Co-starring with Cary Grant and, yes, a tiger named Baby, “[h]er character [Susan] infuriated everyone,” Eric writes, “defeated every man she encountered and at the same time was completely lovable.” Her film characters proved “you could be feminine and yet brilliant and strong.”

ummer’s warming waters are changing fishing patterns. In saltwater, inshore anglers are focused on summer flounder and sea bass, and offshore anglers are pursuing sharks and tuna. Meanwhile, freshwater fly fishers are casting giant “Hex” flies for trout.

Giant bluefin tuna have been biting in the nearby waters just south of Block Island and on Cox Ledge. “This hasn’t happened in 40 years!” says Elisa Conti Cahill of Snug Harbor Marina. Sharks are biting, as well, she reports.

In Connecticut, f luke fishing has been very good off Black Point, with fish as large as six pounds, reports Pat Abate of Rivers End Tackle. Keepers have been biting at Long Sand Shoal and the mouth of the Connecticut River. The waters off Block Island have been producing some large fluke, too.

The sea bass have been stacked up, reports Capt. Matt Cox. Fishing off Montauk, anglers aboard Black Hawk II, out of Niantic, are catching lots of porgies, as well as f luke. Reliable porgie spots in Connecticut include Black Point, Hatchetts and Hens and Chickens reefs, says Pat Abate.

reefs. Pat reports that the largest bass are coming from Block Island, and the most numerous catches are coming from the waters off Montauk. Light-tackle anglers are catching keepers at dawn off Block Island, according to Chris Willi of Block Island FishWorks. Some large fish are still in the Race, Pat says. Boat anglers and shore fishers are finding that the best bite is at night.

Fly fishing for bass in Rhode Island’s rivers is tricky now, according to Rhode Island guide Ed Lombardo. The water flowing out of the salt ponds is so warm that bass are staying away on ebb tides. He recommends fishing on flood tides.

On freshwater streams, Ed says this year’s emergence of giant Michigan Mayf lies, or Hexagenia limbata, is bigger than it has been in a while on Rhode Island’s Wood River. Ed has been fishing emerger-style flies before 8 pm and “spinner” style flies after 8.

roton-Mystic 8-9-10 year old girls Softball Team won the District 10 Championship and are currently competing in the Section 3 Championship! If they win the Sectionals, they will advance to the State Championship.

The Mystic 10, 11 and 12 year old boys Little League team won their district this year. The team is managed by Jason Pollard, with Chris Chappel and Dave Watson coaching. Jeff Joyce (former Fitch manager) is also on the coaching staff, and has taught the boys a lot this summer, taking their games to the next level. As a coaching staff, we’ve had a blast working with these kids... It’s a huge time commitment for them and us, but we have enjoyed every minute of it.
