Alex Breen Runs A Club By Empowering Members story & photo

by Eva Bunnel alking into the Essex Veterans Memorial Hall (EVMH) at 3 Westbrook Road, Essex, you are immediately struck by the open, airy, and welcoming club environment. That’s intentional.

Alex Breen, EVMH club President for the last four plus years, seems to have an instinct for understanding what brings good people together to do good things and have fun in the doing of it.

The handsome and wellcared-for interior of the club belies its age. It’s been in the former schoolhouse since it was first established right after World War II in 1946.

The walls are punctuated with military insignias and photos of those who have proudly served.

These photos take visual precedent over a room that includes those more typical club appointments such as a bar, tables, and a pool table. It is clear, given the priority they take in the club’s rooms, the individuals in these photos, and the sacrifices they made for our country, are never forgotten.

Look over the club’s monthly newsletter and you see listed events, such as “Thirsty

Camaraderie, a true sense of belonging, supporting our veterans and community, being a part of something greater than ourselves, and plain old fun; In a nutshell, that’s what being a part of the Essex Veterans Memorial Hall successfully strives to provide to the members of its club.

“We are a family organization,” explains Alex. Becoming that, was “one of our biggest wins,” he says with a broad smile.

While club membership is primarily for military veterans, it is also open to those who have someone in their family who has

served, or is presently serving, in our Armed Forces. Of the club’s 178 members, 80% are military veterans. Still, Alex shares that anyone can come into the club and enjoy a drink at the bar or one of its scheduled events.

The club at EVMH is the only stand-alone veteran’s organization on the East Coast. Because the club operates according to its own established by-laws, Alex feels this allows the “freedom to serve and support veterans and the surrounding communities in a realtime manner.” Without getting caught up in the delays that seeking the permission of the traditional Veterans organizations may

require, “We can turn requests for support around quickly.”

Utilizing a “whatever is needed” mentality, Alex explains the club’s charitable efforts are focused primarily on “keeping it local.”

“We are fortunate to have a close relationship with Essex government officials,” explains Alex.

The club also works closely with social service agencies to identify those in need of assistance.

Support can take the form of the purchase of a wheelchair for a veteran, or educational grants to high school seniors. Other forms of support include providing meeting space-at no charge- to community organizations such as the Lions Club, the Rotary and other non-profits. EVMH has also proudly chartered and hosted Essex Boy Scout Troop 12 for more than 50 years.

Together with the Town of Essex, the club helps to organize and execute the Essex Memorial Day parade in May of each year.

As EVMH President, Alex clearly enjoys working with people and seems to have an instinct for how to keep members engaged in keeping the club relevant. His two Masters degrees, one in Organizational Behavior Management and the other in

Unit Resource Management, only strengthen his foundation for believing in the empowerment of people. He explains, “Empowering club committee members to bring our mission to life is how I operate. No decision is made alone. If someone comes to me or the full board of directors with an idea, whether it be for fundraising, or an idea for a new club activity, I step out of the way, and simply provide support and encouragement. That’s how we get things done.”

Clearly, it’s working. The EVMH is busy enough to be open seven days a week. Monday through Friday the club opens at 2pm. Saturdays and Sundays have 11am openings. Breen hopes the club “maintains that success.”

One has little doubt the club will ever have to close its doors. You will want to join and be a part of this great organization after one visit.

Work Vessels for Vets Give $39,000 Quilting System to Florida Army Veteran of colors by local veterans, a quilt display, and nearly 20 Gammill employees, 12 of them from the Missouri headquarters, as well as the Statler family, whose matriarch Mildred, 84, had helped solder Daniel’s computer.

Michelle Weaver, general manager of Gammill, said the

donation is a way for the company to give back.

“It fits with why we do what we do,” she said, “empowering people, especially quilters, to achieve their dreams.”

The local Gammill dealer, Itching for Stitching out of Dade City, will help Burgess learn to

work the machine.

He hopes to finish quilts for the Quilts of Valor project, as well as palliative care quilts once he gets the machine up and running. “I can’t wait to figure it out,” he said.

MOHEGAN SUN ARENA Veteran Daniel Burgess, US Army Staff Sgt. (Ret.) finds quilting helps with PTSD and gives him a sense of purpose.

ith each stitch, retired US Army Staff Sgt. Daniel Burgess is piecing together his life, shattered by an explosion when he served in Afghanistan. Friday, the Cape Coral resident received a $39,000 state-of-the-art quilting system adapted for his injuries by non-profit Work Vessels for Vets, Inc. and Gammill, a West Plains, Missouri-based manufacturer of quilting equipment.

“It’s the Cadillac of all machines,” said John Niekrash, chairman and founder of Work Vessels. The Mystic-based agency equips veterans with the tools they need to start a business or pursue a career. It has helped more than 1,600 veterans in the past decade. “Our belief is if you put your life on the line, you deserve more,” he said. With the machine and upgraded computer system by Statler, Daniel will launch his business, One Foot Quilting. He will soon set up a Facebook page by that name for people to contact him.

Daniel joined the Army and was deployed to Afghanistan in August 2011, leaving his wife, Genette, and daughters, Gracie, then 9, and Kaylee, then 8, in Garfield Heights, Ohio.

Months later, he was in the Helmand Province aiding a bomb-clearing mission. “I was the one gathering the intel from the locals and trying to find the IEDs,” he said. “I was approached by an Afghani who wanted to show me where an IED was located. I turned so I could follow him and as I did, I stepped on an IED.” He lost his right leg below the knee, sustained damage to his left leg, fractured his right hand and had a traumatic brain injury. Genette took the call from the Army, she remembers, at 5:28 pm. Nov. 20 telling her Dan was an amputee and in critical condition. It took a week to move him from Afghanistan to Germany, and longer to Fort Sam Houston in Texas.

He spent the next three years recovering at Fort Sam Houston military medical center, medically retiring in 2014.

One day, while joking with Genette, Dan said they should join a beginning quilting class. They did, and it launched a new passion.

“He found it calmed his PTSD and gave him purpose in life,” said Catherine W. Cook, Executive Director of Connecticut-based Work Vessels for Vets, Inc, in discussing his application for aid. “[With this machine,]He could support his family by finishing other people’s quilts.”

Daniel has been piecing his own quilt tops but had to send the projects to a longarm quilter for finishing. A longarm quilting machine allows the user to quilt together the back, batting and quilt top, either by guiding the machine by hand or using computerized software.

Quilting relaxes him, Daniel said. “It allows me to see something that I can easily produce, especially on days I am wheelchair bound,” he said. He has won numerous awards at county fairs and other venues for his quilt designs.

Reginald N. Preston as Officer-in-Charge of Historic Ship Nautilus (SSN 571) and Director of the Submarine Force Museum (HSN/SFLM) Tuesday, Jan. 16 during a ceremony at the museum.

For Reginald, a native of Ly man, Neb., t he ceremo ny marks the end of a remarkable two-year tour leading the Submarine Force’s historical narrative. That included a number of important achievements.

During his tenure, Reginald led a team of experts in rewriting the technical requirements for Nautilus which previously necessitated the ship to be maintained at a level nearly commensurate with operational submarines.

Reginald’s revised requirements not only allowed for cost-wise upkeep and maintenance at a level that preserves Nautilus for future generations, but did so with the expectation the ship would continue to host more than 150,000 visitors annually. This approach saves the taxpayers more than $100 million over the next 30 plus years and allows the Navy to continue to responsibly operate

VCCA’s RSVP Veterans’ Coffeehouse is partnering with Town of Groton Human Services and New London Senior Center adding two new venues for local veterans. The Veterans’ Coffeehouse is a comfortable location for ALL veterans and their spouses to socialize and receive information regarding veterans’ benefits and services.

The Coffeehouse is open to all veterans at no cost. The Coffeehouse relies on local donations and the commitment of RSVP volunteers to serve the veteran community. The established Coffeehouses draw as many as 50 veterans who enjoy the comradery and speakers including authors, historians and representatives from the VA. The Corporation for National and Community Service funds Senior Corps RSVP programs to serve local community needs. RSVP volunteers are instrumental in meeting this and other community needs in our area.

Senior Corps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency for volunteering, service, and civic engagement. During her commissioned service, Nautilus was the world’s first nuclear powered submarine and the first submarine to reach the North Pole as President Eisenhower’s response to the USSR Sputnik program. She served 25 years before conversion to a museum ship and designation as the State Ship of Connecticut, the only nuclear powered warship open to the public.

Working closely with local political and business leaders, Reginald was instrumental in laying the groundwork to establish a future water taxi dock at the museum. As one of almost 20 historic and cultural sites on the banks of the Thames River, the Submarine Force Museum is one of four anchor sites in

the Thames River Heritage Park. When fully operational, the Thames River Heritage Park water taxi will transport visitors to ‘anchor sites’ down river where the taxi is already running during summer months. Additionally, he oversaw the complete ‘revisioning’ of the museum built on feedback from the community and retired submariners to take the museum into its second 30 years of operation. His efforts will help highlight the ‘Submarine Capital of the World’ and the region’s long contribution to national defense.

Reginald’s next tour will be as the Director of Submarine On-Board Training at Naval Submarine Base New London, overseeing production and development of training provided to the entire U.S. Navy submarine fleet.

Happy 15th Anniversary to the Mystic Irish Parade

T

he Mystic Irish Parade, an honored annual tradition in our community, is proud to be celebrating its 15th year! The 2018 parade will be held on Sunday, March 25, beginning at 1 pm. As in past years, participants will gather at the Mystic Seaport parking, march through downtown Mystic, and head down Water Street, ending up at the Mystic Arts Center.

On Thursday, January 25 at Mystic Depot Roasters, members and officers of the Mystic Irish Parade Foundation gathered to kick off the festivities by presenting a sash to the 2018 co-Grand Marshal Rob Valenti, whose dad Bob Valenti will share the honors.

“I am very excited to be the Grand Marshal of the Mystic Irish Parade this year,” Rob said. Bob was unable to attend the gathering because he was out of town but he is also thrilled!

“I attend the parade every year,” Rob said. “It is a tremendous event in our community and has grown and grown over the years. It is so much fun for families. I am so proud to be a part of this.”

The parade is always a huge crowd-pleaser, attracting more than 2,200 participants and

Appreciative visitors of all ages flock to Mystic to delight at the sights and sounds of pipe bands, fife and drum units, high school marching bands, and creative floats designed and operated by local residents and businesses.

“We’ll have some surprises in the parade as usual!” noted Neil Ryan, Vice President, Mystic Irish Parade Foundation. “We’ll also be having an Irish dinner on March 9 at Mystic Arts Center, which will be open to the public.”

The Mystic Irish Parade is funded by proceeds from events,

the generosity of business sponsorships, and individual sales of raffle tickets. Surplus funds collected are donated to local charities.

Kidz Konnection Shoreline Theater Academy Opens

idz Konnection Shoreline Theater Academy celebrated the grand opening of its new Academy building, 61 East Main Street, Clinton with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony generously sponsored by the Clinton Insurance Center and the Clinton Chamber of Commerce. Kidz Konnection was housed in the basement of the Clinton Parkade, where Chips Pub is located for over seven years but due to exponential growth and success, the space became too small for the kids to continue its performance work and leadership training productively.

Kidz Konnection also hopes to collaborate with the members of the First Church of Christ offering programming that centers on the Christian principles and teachings of the church.

Stonington Men Start 2018 With a Bang by Breaking Fireworks Guinness World Record

Gary Weale, club president, presented the donation to Jonathan Grossman, Groton Little League president.

The lights at the field were installed recently at a cost of $80,000.

There are four 60-foot lighting poles with a cluster of 18 LED lights atop each pole. There are poles behind the two dugouts and two in the outfield. The electrical connections are expected to be completed soon.

The Groton Little League is growing and realized that they needed additional space for practices and games. The installation of lights at Calvin Burrows Field will allow the league to schedule both practices and games at the field on any given day.

The addition of the lights will better position the Groton Little League to host District All-Star baseball tournaments.

The Groton Little League has an enrollment of 300 children ballplayers both boys and girls, ranging in age from five to 12 years old.

The league has served the youth sports community in Groton for more than 60 years.

But little do many know that the mild-mannered duo have pretty flashy side careers as pyrotechnicians for the internationally famous Grucci Fireworks family! Recently they broke their third Guinness Record for World’s Largest Aerial Firework Shell by helping to build and launch a one-tonplus firecracker on New Year’s Eve off Al Marjan Island, UAE. More than 100,000 spectators came to see the fantastic display which, at 2,397 pounds, more than doubled the previous record of 1,024 pounds. The shell contained 390 comet stars that burst into the colors of the UAE flag—red, white, and green.

It took Phil Grucci, CEO and Creative Director of Fireworks by Grucci, more than 600 hours to design the show and it required another 70,000 man-hours to build the fireworks, with a team of programmers, producers, pyrotechnicians, and documentarians all working on the project.

“I’ve been work ing for the Gruccis for almost 40 years and helped originate the annual fireworks over the Thames River for the Fourth of July,” Jeff explains. “Ed and I are given the shows on paper and we take it from the schematics and make it happen on the

Watching the shell go up on New Year’s Eve was quite an experience, Ed and Jeff said. “When the shell went up, it roared! It was phenomenal,” Jeff recalled. “None of us had ever seen anything so large being fired! The shell was so big our safety zone was one mile but we actually fired it from beyond the safety zone so everything was fine.”

“It was amazing and a fantastic experience,” said Ed. “To see it up in the sky, there is nothing I can compare it to. It was just so magnificent—not just to see it but to feel it in your body! It was fun to be part of the whole thing. I’ve been doing this for more than 20 years and every experience is different!”

orwich resident and dedicated volunteer Sofee Noblick was named grand marshal for the city’s 5th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival.

Noblick was born in 1960 in Newport, Rhode Island into a Military family.

She grew up and lived in Pawcatuck.

In 1997 she married Rob Noblick, a United States Marine and they literally lived all over the world. They moved to Norwich in 1992 and Sofee immediately fell in love with her new home town. Restoring Anna Warner Bailey Historic Groton Home

A

t the January 21 meeting of the Groton Bank Historical Association at Groton Congregational Church’s Dutton Hall, Dr. Susan Archer, President of the Friends of the Anna Warner Bailey House, related tidbits about Bailey’s colorful life and shared plans for her historic home at the corner of Broad and Thames Streets in the City of Groton.

One of Groton’s most prominent heroines, Anna Warner Bailey was born on October 11, 1758. Her many “claims to fame” included tending to wounded soldiers in 1781 during the Battle of Groton Heights and publicly removing her petticoat to give to the militia stationed in Fort Griswold during the War of 1812 to use as cannon wadding.

“Anna Warner used some quite colorf ul lang uage to express what she hoped her petticoat would do to the British,” Dr. Archer remarked. “The Fort Griswold militia was so impressed with what she did that they used her petticoat as a flag instead. Word of her deed spread and she gained the reputation for being a great patriot.”

A n n a Wa r n e r m a r r ie d Captain Elijah Bailey in 1783 and moved into the home at 108 Thames Street in 1805, when Elijah was appointed the first postmaster of Groton.

Over the years, Anna was visited by many luminaries, including the Marquis de Lafayette and Presidents James Monroe and Andrew Jackson. President

Jackson presented her with the cast-iron fence that still surrounds the house, which has a well-earned spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

“Anna was a staunch Democrat and very anti-Whig,” Dr. Archer related. “She had portraits of all the presidents in her home. If she believed in their politics, the portraits were hung right-side-up. If not, they were upside down!”

Mother Bailey was in excellent health well into her 80s and was determined to live to 100. However, her life sadly ended when she was 93. “She was asleep in front of the fire and an ember caused her petticoat to catch fire. She probably succumbed to smoke inhalation,” Dr. Archer said.

The house has gone through several renovations, including being divided into apartments. Today the structure, which belongs to the City of Groton, is in need of some “tender loving care.” Just over a year ago, the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, named for Anna Warner Bailey, decided to get involved.

In June 2017, a committee of “daughters” joined with several historically minded members of the community to form the Friends of the Anna Warner Bailey House.

The Friends are actively raising funds and hope to gain ownership of the property, after which they would restore the house and maintain it as a community resource. “This house is an important part of Groton’s history,” stressed Dr. Archer, who is a direct descent of Groton’s Revolutionary War Lieutenant Colonel Ebenezer Avery and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Ms. Kathie Cassidy is the chairperson who has organized the project to install mats on the beach. Kathie has reported, “It is the desire of the E.L. Public Trust Foundation to make Niantic Bay Beach and Hole in the Wall Beach a wheelchair accessible friendly place. We want to allow people with mobility impairment to visit and enjoy these beaches.” She is continuing to solicit grants from other entities for this project. The Public Trust Foundation is hoping to have the mats installed this spring.

Mohegan Sun Wine And Food Fest

undreds of wine connoisseurs crowded Uncas Ballroom for the 15th Annual The Sun Wine & Food Fest held January 26 – 28 at Mohegan Sun Casino. On Saturday, attendees were there to sample over 1000 varieties of wine and beer. The festival featured a selection of specialty spirits and sumptuous food offered by an array of restaurants including a food truck. Atendees watched cooking demonstrations by nationally-renowned chefs including Rocco DiSpirito and Alex Guarnaschelli.

The Grand Tasting began at noon and guests converged into the ballroom after obtaining a wine glass for the fest. Some of the exhibitors were Barefoot Wine & Bubbly, Preston Ridge Vineyard, and Brescome Barton, Inc, distributor. Spirits included Fishers Island Lemonade, Jameson, which offered their Caskmates line, and Michter’s Distillery f rom Louisville, Kentucky.

The cooking demos began on the Main Culinary Stage with Michele Ragussis. Michele prepared fried cauliflower with a triple coating of bread crumbs that provided a crunchy outside and a tender inside. Rocco DiSpirito cooked risotto with participation from the audience. Rocco compared risotto to a baby. “If you leave it alone, something bad will happen,” he said referring to the fact that risotto needs continuous stirring.

Maneet Chauhan, a judge f r o m C h o p p e d , o n Fo o d Network, owns three restaurants in Nashville: Tánsuŏ, Chauhan Ale & Masala House, and The Mock ingbird. Maneet used her culinar y expertise to prepare crab cakes that included cilantro, coconut, and curry.

Todd English, assisted by two audience members and the executive chef from his restaurant, Tuscany at Mohegan Sun, made a spaghetti-stuffed meatball that took six hours to cook but with the “magic of television,” it cooked within 30 minutes. The spaghetti was mixed with ricotta, mozzarella, and tomatoes. The audience members rushed the stage to grab a delicious sample. And they disappeared ever so quickly!

Chef Alex Guarnaschelli, arrived to a resounding applause from the audience. Alex, a regular judge on Chopped, prepared braised short ribs and crispy potato cake while taking questions from the audience. Her most frequently asked question? What is the worst thing you ever ate on Chopped? The answer - blueberry scone mashed potatoes.

Food samplings required a ticket purchase of a dollar for each with prices ranging between 2 to 8 dollars. Proceeds benefitted Channel 3 WFSB Kids Camp, an inclusive camping experience for all children and youth throughout Connecticut and the New England region and from a variety of backgrounds.

There were over a dozen specialty restaurants including Bear’s BBQ, Hartford; Nora Cupcake Co, M iddletown, and the New London Munchies Food Truck.

ominion Energy has awarded $2,500 to The Jonnycake Center of Westerly for its Emergency Food Assistance programs. The Jonnycake Center of Westerly’s emergency food assistance programs fight hunger in our community with a fourpronged approach.

1. The Monthly Food Assistance Program provides a week’s worth of food to local residents every thirty days in order to supplement other government programs such as SNAP. Over 3000 residents of Westerly, Charlestown, Hopkinton and Richmond, Rhode Island seek this monthly food assistance on a regular basis. In the past year we have distributed over 206,644 equivalent meals—a 5% increase over the previous year.

2. During school vacations, The SPLASH Program (Summer Program Looking to Alleviate Student Hunger) provides additional breakfast and lunch meals to any child in our service area who qualifies for free or reduced school meal programs.

3. Our weekly Farmers’ Market, made possible during summer months thanks to our collaboration with the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, the University of Rhode Island’s Master Gardener Program, local municipal community gardens, and a host of local farmers who share their produce with us. The result is we can offer free fresh, locally grown produce to all members of the community each Wednesday from July to October.

4. Our Power Pak Program, which feeds schoolchildren on the weekends during the school year.

Dropkick Murphys Coming to Mohegan Sun February 24

D

ropkick Murphys have announced the dates for their headlining St. Patrick’s Day Tour 2018.

Marking their first U.S. tour of the year, the run will kick off on February 24th at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville and culminate with the band’s annual hometown run of Boston shows St. Patrick’s Day Week (March 15th - 18th). The band will perform live in the Arena at 7:30pm.

Tour openers include New York Hardcore icons Agnostic Front and Boston Ska pioneers

Dropkick Murphys St. Patrick’s Day Tour 2018 with openers Agnostic Front & Bim Skala Bim kicks off at Mohegan Sun Arena on February 24th.

Bim Skala Bim, who both have a long history with Dropkick Murphys and have shared bills with the band since the early days of DKM. Bim Skala Bim was a co-opener for The Mighty Mighty Bosstones’ “Boston On The Road” tour in 1997, which introduced Dropkick Murphys to a national audience. Dropkick Murphys and Agnostic Front last toured the U.S. together in 1998, which was followed by the DKM/AF 7” split Unity in 1999.

he Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation held its annual Inauguration Ceremony January 2, officially commencing the first term of office for two new Tribal Council Elects: Matthew Pearson and Latoya Cluff. Crystal Whipple also took oath this morning as Vice Chairwoman, replacing Richard E. Sebastian, who completed a fifth term of office. Also outgoing was Councilor Roy Colebut-Ingram, completing two terms of office and did not seek a third.

The Tribal Council consists of seven elected officials serving three-year staggered terms of office. The Tribal Council has full management authority over the properties, funds, and affairs of the Mashantucket (Western) Pequot Tribe, overseeing the tribe’s government and business enterprises.

Vice Chairwoman Crystal is serving her third term of office.

During her previous tenure, she served two years as Vice Chairwoman, and was a member of the Board of Directors for United South and Eastern Tribes (USET). Beyond her tribal obligations, Crystal serves as Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors for Community Speaks Out; a local agency that advocates for education and assistance in combatting opioid addiction. She holds an Associates Degree in Business Administration from University of New Haven, and is a Ledyard High School alumnus.

Newcomer Matthew Pearson was recently appointed by the Tribal Council as its

Secretar y. Mat thew holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Media and Communications f rom Muhlenberg Col lege in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and a certificate in Publishing from the Universit y of Denver’s Publishing Institute. Prior to his election, Matthew served as director of the Tribe’s High Five Project, a grant funded initiative designed to improve the physical, social, emotional, and cultural well-being of tribal adolescents.

He also served as a board member for the Mashantucket Business Development Company, LLC. Beyond his tribal obligations, Matthew serves as secretary of the Board of Directors for the Eastern Area Health Education Center, based at University of Connecticut’s School of Medicine in Farmington.

Newcomer Latoya Cluff is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of University of New Haven, Latoya holds a master’s degree in labor relations with a concentration in human resources management, and a bachelor of science in business management from Johnson & Wales University.

Latoya was an active member of the tribe’s Fox Dance Troupe for

many years, proudly representing Mashantucket during the 1996 Olympic Games opening ceremonies in Atlanta. Prior to that, Latoya represented Mashantucket at the 1995 Indigenous Games as a basketball athlete.

Elders Council Vice Chairwoman Marjorie ColebutJackson was also swor n in, beginning her first full 3-year term as Elders Council Vice Chairwoman. Marjorie completed the final year of Gary Carter Sr.’s term when he was elected to the Chairman position, vacating his seat as Vice Chairman after completing two years of a three-year term. Both Gary Carter Sr. and Marjorie Colebut-Jackson had served previously as Tribal Council Secretary.

Also sworn in was the tribe’s Youth Council, consisting of five Tribal Members under the age of 25 driven to serve Mashantucket by lending their voices in tribal government matters, serving as liaisons to youth from other tribes, and strengthening relationships between tribal youth, the Tribal Council, and Tribal Elders. They are: Shaquanna Sebast ian, Chairwoman; Leyanna Minnis, Vice Chairwoman; Lanette Hernandez, Secretary; Phyllip Thomas, Treasurer; Fatia Rickerson, Youth Ambassador.

by Reverend John Eliot in the mid-1600’s, the Eliot Bible is the first bible published in North America (Cambridge, Mass; 1663), and is written in a Native American Algonquin language similar in dialect to the Pequot Mohegan language.

“We were fortunate enough to obtain two copies of these precious books about twenty years ago,” says Chairman Rodney

Butler. “One was published in the first edition printing in 1663, and the other was published in 1685 after all but nine of the first edition copies were destroyed during conflict. We used the second edition book in today’s ceremony. Not only was it a very special experience for everyone to witness, it was also a great way to kick off a special anniversary year for our museum.”

To Divorce or Not To Divorce?

I

f you are seriously contemplating divorce, here are some questions for you to explore beforehand: • Is there something you’re wanting your spouse to do (or quit doing) in order for you to stay? If so, have you clearly articulated what it is? If you haven’t, it is vital you do so, because nobody is a good mind reader.

• Are there non-negotiable issues that the two of you cannot agree on, such as having a baby?

Most issues and conflicts are negotiable. Are yours?

• How high a priority do you think you are to your spouse?

What priorities do you think come before you?

• How high a priority is your spouse to you? What comes ahead of him/her?

• Do you have major trust issues with your spouse? If so, what specifically would need to happen in order for your spouse to repair that trust? What would be a good beginning?

• Have you given your very best to this relationship? Be honest. What could you have done much better?

• Are you still physically attracted to your partner? Are there any requests you have in this regard that would matter to you?

• What would you guess a divorce will cost you monetarily, emotionally, socially, spiritually and personally?

• Is this a well-known pattern in your life? Do you have a history of leaving a relationship, or did you grow up with a parent leaving you through death or abandonment?

• What would you need to do in order to save this relationship? List everything.

• What would your spouse need to do in order to save this relationship? Again, list everything.

• What did you do right in this relationship?

• What did you do wrong, and how have you contributed to the problems, issues or conflicts in the relationship?

• How could you be a far better partner in the future?

• How hard will it be for you to be single again?

After you thoroughly answer these questions, give this to your spouse to deliberate on, and then see if the two of you can talk about these issues without escalating, getting hostile, or withdrawing. At the very best, the two of you may be able to negotiate a way to remain together and be happier with each other. At the worst, this is called “conscious uncoupling.” It’s a way for a couple to separate while still being civil and honest with each other.

Turning Things Around

A

s much as you strive to stay on your desired path, there are times where you will veer off course, sometimes even going in the opposite direction. When you have lost your way you have to turn things around.

Your initial step is to recognize and acknowledge that you are going in the wrong direction. You must Bryan take full responsibility for the road Golden you are currently on. If you blame Author “Dare To Live other people or circumstances, you will not get back on track.

You chose the direction you are traveling. Turning things around involves reassessing and reordering your priorities. Taking for granted all you have to be thankful for is all too common. When this happens, losing your way is all too easy.

Before you can begin turning things around, you must immediately stop doing whatever caused you to wind up where you don’t want to be. Nothing will get better until you do this.

When you are going the wrong way, or have made a mistake, there are four important questions to answer.

• What happened? In order to begin taking corrective action you must identify exactly what went awry. To do this, you need an awareness of what’s happening in your life. You will not be able to get back on the road unless you are looking out the windshield.

• Why did it happen? You must understand the cause and effect relationship that brought you to your current position. The key to this is what you did and the role you played. Since the only thing you have control over is yourself, it’s a complete waste of time to fault others or make excuses.

• What did you learn? There is more to be learned from mistakes and problems than when everything goes right. If you don’t learn anything, you are destined to constantly repeat the same errors.

• What do you have to do to prevent it from happening again?

Accurately answering this question is vital to avoiding the same mistakes that brought you off course. People who don’t honestly answer this question are destined to find themselves stuck in an endless cycle of frustration. Blaming others for you circumstances puts you in this position.

In order to turn things around, you need to determine your new direction. This decision is based on your goals. Without a clear destination, there is no way to alter your course. Formulating well defined goals is paramount.

Let go of the past. Learn from your mistakes rather than fixating on failures. Life moves forward. Concentrate on taking the action today necessary for making tomorrow better. Nothing happens without action.

Displace the bad habits that drove you off course, with good ones. Bad habits sabotage your success. As soon as you catch yourself behaving in an old pattern, change what you are doing. This is a repetitive process that takes time to become engrained. Persistent bad habits inhibit your turning things around.

If you are on the wrong path, there’s no reason for you to keep suffering. You have the power to make changes. The longer you continue in the wrong direction, the more time it takes for your return trip. Act today to take the first step. Recognize the need for change and then formulate a plan.

Believe in yourself. If you have the desire and determination, you can turn things around. Your mind believes whatever you tell it. If you believe you can, you are right. If you believe you can’t, you are also right. So tell your mind that you can and will turn things around.

A

s fashions change in clothing, so do fashions in furniture and design. Norman Rockwell was considered a commercial artist of little value for many years, but now his original paintings for magazine covers can sell for millions of dollars.

A strange table made by John Scott Bradstreet (18451 914 ) r e c e n t l y w a s of fe r e d a t a Cowan auction in Cincinnati.

Bradstreet wa s a le a d i n g i nt e r io r designer, decorator and tastemaker in Minneapolis for many years before he died in a car crash in 1914. The wooden center table sold in the auction was covered with shallow carvings that followed the grain.

The technique, called by the Japanese name jin-di-sugi, used cypress, a soft wood that, after a long time in water or mud, develops raised lines in the grain. The wood was then scorched, brushed, carved and waxed, a process that was modernized and patented by Bradstreet.

Few pieces like this are known, and many of these are in museums.

The auctioned table had side panels that f lipped down to make small display shelves on each side.

We looked for mor e i n forma tion about this table and the maker, and found that it had sold in 2005 for an estimated price of $50,000 to $75,000. This time, the table brought $24,000.

Pet Hospice Care DEAR PAWS: A few months ago, I lost one of my cats, “Enos,” to a lengthy illness. He was a senior cat and had a number of issues, like diabetes, that caused him to go downhill fairly quickly. When it became apparent that he was only going to get worse, not better, his veterinarian suggested that we go ahead with euthanasia.

Enos wasn’t ready to go, however. He was tired and barely able to walk, but his eyes were still bright and he still responded to us. I asked if there was any other way to ease his pain without putting him to sleep, and the

veterinarian suggested hospice care specifically for pets.

This turned out to be a wonderful option. The vet recommended another veterinarian who specialized in pet hospice. There was some additional expense and more time needed to properly care for Enos, but he lived like a king, largely free from pain, for almost six months before passing quietly.

I highly recommend that owners of senior pets consider hospice as an option to euthanasia.

he Little East Conference (LEC) All-Academic Team for the fall 2017 semester has been announced, and Eastern Connecticut State University is well represented. With 35 student athletes named to the team this semester, including a record 13 members of the women’s soccer team (the most by any institution in any sport), Eastern ranks second among conference institutions in honorees.

Among the student-athletes named to the team are Alyson Clarke ‘19 of Mystic and Michelle Valliere ‘18 of Lebanon. Alyson, who played soccer, majors in Early Childhood Education and Psychology.

Michelle, who played volleyball, majors in Health Sciences.

To qualify for a spot on the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore and have earned at a cumulative gradepoint average of 3.30 or higher.

The Little East Conference (LEC) was established in 1986 as a single-sport league by six public institutions throughout New England.

The LEC has since become a multi-sport league with eight primary members, six affiliate members and 19 championships.

“The Will O’ The Wisp” And Sugar Ray

I

n his interview for Once They Heard the Cheers (1979), W.C. Heinz’s compilation of interviews with nineteen athletes, Middletown’s Willie Pep talked about the time he was fighting “a tall black guy from the Salem AC named Ray Roberts.” The place was, yes, Norwich, the year 1937, and both Willie and his opponent were amateurs at the time.

Weighing twenty-plus pounds less than his opponent, Willie lost the three-round decision, Later nicknamed the Will o’ the Wisp, Pep turned pro in 1940, and in 1944 won the National Boxing Association featherweight championship by defeating Chalky Wright. During that decade Roberts, now fighting as Sugar Ray Robinson, won the world welterweight championship from Tommy Bell. At the Chicago Stadium, in 1951,

Sugar Ray wrested the middleweight title from Jake LaMotta by TKO. It isn’t an exaggeration to say Sugar Ray is regarded by boxing historians and fans as one of the greatest fighters of all time, and one of the interviews in “Once They Heard the Cheers” is with him. Titled “The Greatest Pound for Pound,” W.C. wrote: “While Willie Pep was the greatest creative artist I ever saw in a ring, Sugar Ray Robinson remains the greatest fighter, poundfor-pound and punch-for-punch… since Benny Leonard retired in 1924.”

Considered one of the best defensive fighters of all time, Willie held the featherweight champ for nine years, compiling an amazing record of 229-11-1. Three of his

losses were to Sandy Saddler, one of the featherweight division’s greatest champions ever.

Their historic battles are regarded by many fans and boxing experts as “dirty,” but in Willie’s excellent book, Willie Pep remembers: Friday’s Heroes, he said Sandy wasn’t a dirty fighter. Rough, yes—but not dirty!

Willie wrote that their fourth fight, on September 26, 195l,

“was one of the roughest, toughest bouts of all time, and in some ways the most controversial. Not that there was any doubt about who won…. [It was a brawl] like the oldtime bare-knuckle days, with wrestling, heeling, tripping, thumbing….

A lot of writers thought that we should have both thrown out.” (After Willie and Sandy retired, they became friends. “I have nothing but respect for Sandy,” Willie wrote.)

W.C. regards Willie’s second fight against Sandy, the one he won by decision in 1949, at Madison Square Garden, “as the greatest boxing exhibition I ever saw, for Saddler knocked him out in their first fight, and had the height and reach and punch on him. He hurt him the second

time, too, cut him…and rocked him time and again, but it was Willie’s fight from the first round on when he jabbed Saddler thirty-seven times in succession without a return.”

he Annual Meeting of United Way of Southeastern CT, on January 26, celebrated a year of leadership which comes from the community. Brian Orenstein, outgoing Board Chairman, thanked all present for their support for two years. He thanked staff and Board for efforts to wage a continuous battle against food insecurity in New London County and to assure the future for partner programs and collaborations. He noted the unique qualities of UW, its officers, and board members.

Rodney Butler, Chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council since 2010, was elected as the Chairman of the Board of the United Way. He has been Leadership Giving Chairman for United Way and Co-Chair of the annual Campaign.

He has a degree in finance from the University of Connecticut and is a member of the Board of Directors for the Mystic Aquarium and is a Trustee for

Roger Williams University.

Chairman-Elect of the Board is William Louis, President of MDA (UAW) Local 571.

This is William’s second year as Co-Chair for the United Way Campaign, a member of the Governance Committee and outgoing secretary of the Board.

Nadine McBride, Publisher of the Bulletin, is continuing with Bill Louis as the Co-Chair of the Campaign. Nikki Gullickson was elected Secretary. She is a member of the Food Center Oversight Committee, and the Governance Committee.

Brian passed the gavel to Rodney Butler and pledged his support to the organization and Rodney Butler’s leadership of a “fully engaged board of 23 members.”

Long Distance Voyagers: The Story of the Moody Blues by Marc Cushman takes an in-depth look at the group’s extraordinarily successful career.

T

he first biography about the Moody Blues, the founders of symphonic rock, has been published by Jacobs/ Brown Press. Long Distance Voyagers: The Story of the Moody Blues takes an in-depth look at the group’s extraordinarily successful career, over which they have sold roughly 80 million records, scoring Top 20 hits in four different decades, including several No. 1s. The book’s release is perfectly timed: the Moodies are touring America throughout January, 2018, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of their innovative album, Days of Future Passed, and its chart-topping single, “Nights in White Satin.” Both were issued in North America in early 1968. And, this April, the Moodies will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Author Marc Cushman related, “The Moody Blues first topped the charts in 1965 in the U.K., with the single ‘Go Now!’ But their true breakthrough came in early 1968, with Days of Future Passed – the first LP to combine rock with orchestral music, creating the ‘symphonic rock’ genre. Days was also the first rock concept album, followed by other Moodies concept albums such as In Search of the Lost Chord and To Our Children’s Children’s Children. The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper, released only months before Days, didn’t have a central theme throughout, as the Moodies’ albums did.”

The Moody Blues also pioneered the Mellotron, a keyboard instrument which could emulate an orchestra, enabling them to reproduce their symphonic rock on stage. Moodies’ member Mike Pinder introduced the Mellotron to the Beatles, which was featured on the classic single, “Strawberry Fields Forever.”

Prior to that, the two groups had toured together.

Marc, who received a Saturn Award in 2014 for his threebook series, These Are the Voyages – Star Trek: The Original Series, spent all of 2017 researching and writing the two-volume Moody Blues biography. Volume 1 is 800 pages in length, covering the band’s history through the 1960s and ‘70s. Volume 2, scheduled for later in 2018, focuses on the 1980s and beyond.

Both volumes feature hundreds of photos, and contain new interviews with Moody Blues founding members Mike Pinder and Ray Thomas. Sadly, Thomas died on January 4, after a heart attack.

Marc says, “The Moodies were the first rock group to regularly feature the flute – played by Ray Thomas. Like the other Moodies, he was a gifted songwriter and a consummate performer. This book documents the Moodies’ role as one of the most significant rock bands of the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s. Their influence is still being felt; the introduction of the Mellotron alone changed the course of rock music. Bands such as Yes, the Electric Light Orchestra, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, and Genesis are in debt to the Moody Blues for this and other musical innovations.”
