The Fellows family are the children of the late Capt. Charles D. and Betty Fellows.

Charles D. was a founder and lifelong member of the Southern New England Fishermen and Lobstermen’s Association. Betty kept the household running while her husband was at sea. Their children, Catherine J. Fellows, Jacqueline Malagrino, Chuckie G. Fellows, Jeanne Fellows Grills, and Keith A. Fellows, assembled information honoring their parents for the booklet that commemorates the 2017 Blessing of the Fleet.

Jeanne noted that her brother, Chuckie, was born in 1954, the same year as the first Blessing of the Fleet. A statue of St. Peter, the Patron Saint of Fishermen, will hold an important spot in the parade. Other features will include the Junior Colonial Fife and Drum Corps of Westbrook, bagpipe players The Westerly Band and more. Bishop Cote will board the Stonington Fleet’s flagship, The Neptune, and the procession will continue past the breakwater in Long Island Sound where Peggy Krupinski, widow of Fisherman Walter Krupinski who died at sea in 2015 will toss a wreath in the shape of a broken anchor overboard. This is the tradition of honoring those lost at sea. “There have been so many fishermen who have lost their lives,” Georgia reflected.

The Bishop will then bless the vessels and crews of the Stonington fleet, which Michael Crowley, Georgia’s husband and also a planning committee member, described as, “the last fishing fleet in the State of Connecticut.”

A family-oriented celebration will cap the day from noon to 4pm, reinforcing the fact that the fisherman’s lifestyle is really a family lifestyle. Georgia said the celebration will include music by The Country Misfits, maritime activities for children by the New England Science and Sailing Foundation (NESS), traditional Portuguese foods, and other activities.

“The main focus is never to forget the Fishermen who lost their lives,” Georgia said.

The 64th Annual Blessing of the Fleet in Stonington Sunday, July 30 will honor that sacrifice with a Mass at St. Mary’s Church, a parade, blessing of the fleet and wreath ceremony to honor fishermen who died at sea, in a family-oriented celebration at the Stonington Town Dock with food, music, activities for children, and more.

A fundraising event, the Third Annual Blessing of the Fleet 5K Road Race and Walk, kicks off this year’s effort Thursday, July 27.

The timed 5K race offers trophies and prizes in many age categories. Those who want a more leisurely pace can register for the two-mile walk.

Register online through July 26 at www.runreg. com/blessingofthefleet5K for $20 or register at the race site at the Stonington Town Dock from 4pm to 5:45pm July 27 for $25. The race begins at 6pm and winds through the streets of Stonington Borough.

“This is the third year they’ve done the race,” said Georgia Roderick Crowley, one of the planners of the Blessing of the Fleet. “They attract runners from around the state. The Borough is a really beautiful place.” The Blessing of the Fleet is organized by St. Mary’s Catholic Church in coordination with the Southern New England Fishermen and Lobstermen’s Association.

His Excellency Bishop Michael R. Cote from the Diocese of Norwich, will celebrate the traditional Fishermen’s Mass at 10:30am July 30 at St. Mary’s Church in Stonington.

After Mass, a parade will begin from the Town Dock, led by Grand Marshal Capt. Charles G. “Chuckie” Fellows. The Fellows Family have a long tradition working on the Stonington Fishermen’s Fleet. Georgia, daughter of a career fisherman herself, explained that the committee wanted to emphasize the family commitment to fishing as a life calling, and so selected the Fellows Family represented by Chuckie as the Grand Marshal this year.

They were honored at a reception at the M.G. Maurice Rose Armed Force Reserve Center, Middleton, June 11.

“He would raise a company of Indians and raise a company of whites and he told the whites, ‘you watch what they do,’” Guy explained.

The weekend’s events included a guided tour of the remains of a Pequot Fort from the King Philip’s War era. Dr. Kevin McBride, Director of Research at the Museum, led the tour of the Monhantic Fort site, which he discovered in 1992. It is the most pristine remains of a Native fort from the period. Kevin offered insights

into the factions of Europeans and Tribes that allied and fought against each other during the Pequot War (1636-1637) and Philip’s War (1675-1677) period.

From demonstrations on spit roasting meat over an open fire, to the difference between matchlock and flintlock guns, to lessons on how Native Americans made wooden bowls and fishing nets, the Encampment offered educational fun for the many families that attended.

by Karen Koerner e-enactors created a 17th Century Encampment at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum And Resource Center June 24 and 25 that depicted how Native Americans and Europeans interacted with each other in New England some 300 years ago.

Enthusiastic history buffs gathered in wigwams, tents, and shelters made of branches, to demonstrate how people lived, worked and fought in the 1600s and early 1700s.

Gail Usher, dressed in a long skirt and a prim, white cap, demonstrated how herbalists used native plants and methods to heal ailments. She is a member of the Society of the 17th Century, and learned about herbs from fellow member, the late June Cook. “I hung on her every word and took over for her,” Gail said.

Next to Gail’s table of fragrant herbs were Guy Morin, Auburn, MA, and Steven Eames, North Berwick, ME, who demonstrated flintlock guns and talked about the legacy of early local leader Benjamin Church, the first European to realize they could learn much from the way native peoples fought.

Megan Bugg Teams With Ivory Ella to Fight Childhood Cancer

by Karen Koerner egan Bugg and her family are traveling a journey that began with the worst words a parent can hear: “Your child has cancer.” The journey continued in late June when leaders from Ivory Ella, a Westerly, RI T-shirt and clothing business, flew 16-year-old Megan and her mother, Debbie, from their small Illinois hometown to New England where Megan and her friend Lauren Clements helped design a T-shirt that will raise money to fight childhood cancer.

Megan’s journey includes pain, but also uplifting moments and a commitment to help others. “When I was first diagnosed it was definitely very hard,” said Megan. She was diagnosed with cancer on Dec. 26, 2014.

Megan has Stage Four Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare childhood cancer. Her family’s life changed from a typically active household where teenaged sisters Megan and Mackenzie participated in school sports, music and other activities, to an all-consuming regimen of doctor appointments, hospitalizations, painful treatments and debilitating side-effects. Yet, despite the pain, Megan and Debbie point to blessings. A world of friendships opened to Megan and other children with cancer. “We just have a connection no one else can understand,” Megan said.

“It’s made our family stronger,” Debbie added. Perhaps most importantly, Megan is now an advocate for better funding for research and treatment of childhood cancers. That is where Ivory Ella comes in.

Robin Vinson, Charitable Giving Manager for Ivory Ella, said the company learned about Megan’s story and her love for Ivory Ella products from Megan’s friend Lauren Clements from

Franklin, TN. Ivory Ella invited Megan and Lauren to design a T-shirt that will raise funds for childhood cancer. Shirts will go on sale Aug. 25. The company also will make a $30,000 donation to the Boston Children’s Hospital in honor of Megan.

Robin, with help from area businesses and individuals, arranged a whirlwind tour of regional activities for Megan, Debbie and Lauren to enjoy when they weren’t creating the top-secret shirt design.

“I’m so proud of Megan,” Debbie said. “It has empowered her to become an advocate. We are absolutely making the most of every single day.”

Welch will oversee the clinical portion of the agency which includes nursing, counseling services, clinical outreach, quality/compliance and volunteer services. Welch brings years of experience in hospice and palliative care, most recently as Director of Hospice and Palliative Care at Visiting Nurse and Health Services of Connecticut.

orwich is welcoming visitors in a multicultural way with the posting of two new signs that proclaim, “Welcome” in six foreign languages.

The signs are the brainchild of Swaranjit Singh Khalsa, a Norwich resident and business owner who emigrated from India and was educated in New Jersey. This is his latest effort to encourage the people of Norwich to embrace diversity. Earlier this year Swaranjit was honored by the FBI, the U.S Attorney of Connecticut and by City of Norwich for his community work that promotes religious understanding.

Languages included on the new signs proclaim welcome in Punjabi, which is the Sikh national language, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Italian and German. The signs can be seen at the entrance to Norwich from Exit 29 of RT-2 near Backus Hospital, and at Exit 80 (New Exit 11) at West Main Street.

Millennials: Plan For Retirement When One Partner Now Or Pay The Price Later Withholds Sex

by David Rosell illennials are a stressed out generation.

A study by the A mer ican Psycholog ical Association reported that the group of Americans in their early 20s to late 30s came in at a 5.4 stress level on a scale of 1-10, higher than the American average of 4.9.

Among the things keeping them up at night are predictions of being the first generation that will be less well off than their parents – and that includes retirements that potentially will be less secure. No longer do millennials have the pensions to look forward to in retirement like their parents and grandparents before them, and no longer do they have the confidence that Social Security will help at least supplement some of their retirement income.

“Every generation has had its own set of trials and adversaries to conquer,” says David Rosell, financial professional and author of Keep Climbing: A Millennial’s Guide to Financial Planning (w w w . D a v i d R o s e l l . c o m) .

“However, today’s generation of young adults faces a uniquely challenging environment. And saving money for retirement is a luxury that many just can’t afford.”

Millenials who start investing now in their retirement have the advantage of time to make their savings grow.

He offers some tips to millennials for improving the odds their retirements will be stress free: • Start saving and investing early. If you start investing $2,000 a year for seven years in an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) at the age of 19, you could be a millionaire by age 65. While it might not be practical for most 19 year olds to invest $2,000 a year, Rosell says, the point is that making sacrifices and saving early makes life easier down the road.

• Be patient, it’s a long road ahead. If you are working your first or second full-time job, and beginning to put money into investment accounts, you need to remember that retirement is a long

way down the road. “The current stock market volatility can be a very emotional time for investors,” Rosell says. “But the worst move one can make in the middle of such turbulence is to bail.

• Don’t be your own worst enemy. Obtain guidance from a financial advisor. The economy will go through ups and downs during your lifetime, but having a financial professional to guide you can improve your financial future and keep you from making some common, costly mistakes.

Rosell says, “The time for millennials to start thinking long term is now before they get too far along in their career and realize they are going to have to start playing catch-up.”

Preliminary plans for fundraising include applying for

historic preservation grants, sale of a booklet on Anna Warner Bailey by Groton Historian Jim Streeter and a performance of a play about her. In addition, Hali Keeler is donating the royalties of the book she wrote with Leslie Evans and David Rose, The Ghosts of Groton Bank, to the Anna Warner Bailey house.

I thought divorce might be the solution here, but he refused to go and still pressures me for sex. — Am I Guilty in California Dear Guilty: No one—and I mean no one—should be pressured to have sex unless it’s something they want to do, and are willing to offer freely. So no, you are not being abusive by withholding or withdrawing sex from your husband.

The larger question, however, is about what you are going to do about the intolerable living conditions in your marriage. Living the way you’re describing sounds unendurable, and I do not recommend you stay in this arrangement.

This spontaneous gesture sparked a wave of patriotism throughout our young country.

On June 16, a group spearheaded by members of the Anna Warner Bailey Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), stepped up and formed Friends of the Anna Warner Bailey House, with the goal of restoring her home, believed to have been constructed in 1782.

This sounds as if your husband is withholding warmth and affection from you, either to force you to give in to him, or because he is no longer wanting a close relationship with you. It would appear that he is retreating from and/or rejecting the relationship with you. That is why I’m urging you to have a serious discussion with him about how he is feeling about you and about the marriage.

Local Filmmaker Seeks Producer Fort Trumbull For Mystic Murder Mystery Series Celebrates WWI Songs

by Anna Trusky ho killed Bridget Ashling, a prominent member of an Irish family from Mystic and left her body to burn on a boat? That is the question, and there are plenty of potential answers in the juicy pilot for Mystic: A Murder Mystery, a new project written

by Massachusetts native Frank Durant a.k.a. Victor Franko (his SAG “stage name”). In addition to the pilot, Frank has written 30 episodes and is seeking producers and distributors willing to help him and co-producer John Duke Logan advance the series to a fullfledged production for TV or Web. “The pilot is essentially a promotional video to showcase the storyline and the cast of characters,” Frank explained. “We hope to remake the pilot with a bigger budget and production.”

The pilot was, appropriately, filmed in and around the Mystic area using digital cameras and local talent. Sharp-eyed viewers will recognize such local sites as Angie’s restaurant, Mystic Depot Roasters, and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Pearl Street. As news of the Ashling murder spreads like wildfire throughout the sleepy New England fishing village, suspicious characters are revealed, including Bridget’s mysterious and perhaps even evil sister; a crooked town politician; a rugged fisherman; the proprietor of a local pub; a super creepy Irish priest; a seemingly deranged woman (a psychic or witch); a tormented artist who compulsively paints the very

Frank Durant is excited about the prospect of turning his pilot project -- Mystic: A Murder Mystery -- into a fullfledged TV or Web series. burning boat in which Bridget’s charred corpse was found; and even her daughter Aidan, who was found at the scene of the murder and is in a mute, semicatatonic state. As the closing credits to the pilot roll, a strange man in a hooded cloak is seen wandering the misty Mystic streets carrying an old-fashioned lantern; a chilling touch.

Frank got the idea for a series in Mystic through many years of visiting the area. His wife Maura’s family, originally from Boston, has had a year-round home there for more than a dozen years. “We are both born, raised, and currently living in Massachusetts, but we escape to Mystic every weekend,” Frank said. “I liked the idea of having a series based in Mystic and

like the fact that the name of the town equals ‘mystery.’

“I enjoyed creating these interesting characters. We want to showcase the concept of the show in hopes of finding a studio or network that wants to produce Mystic as a full Web or television series.

We have submitted to 10 pilot festivals and are scheduling meetings with agents and showrunners who are looking for good projects.”

Judging by the pilot, this is a very good project indeed; a well-crafted “whodunit” whose setting, like David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, hides many unsettling secrets under its sleepy, small-town surface.

s the Friends of Fort Trumbull commemorate 100 years since the United States’ entry into World War I, they welcome back popular folk musician Rick Spencer to perform, Songs of the First World War, 7pm, July 27 at the Fort Trumbull Conference Center, 90 Walbach St., New London.

There is no better way to bring the history of this period to life than to listen to these songs. For the families at home and the men on the battlefield, these inspirational songs expressed patriotism, tragedy, grief, hope, and even some humor. They were a way of uniting and inspiring the combatants and the general citizenry.

Rick is known internationally for his work as a historian, researcher, singer, songwriter and performer of music in the American Folk Tradition. He served as Site Administrator of the Hempsted Houses in New London and as the Executive Director of the Dr. Ashbel Woodward Museum in Franklin. He is presently Secretary for the Board of Directors of the New London County Historical Society.

In 1986, Rick was hired as a staff musician, researcher, and historical interpreter at Mystic Seaport, the Museum of America and the Sea, where he became a member of “Forebitter,” an internationally renowned sea-music group. For the past 20 years he worked aboard tall ships from the days of sail and was an instructor on sailing ships in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

Harper (Krause Publications, $18.99), and discovered there was a modification of this coin during the year of its issue. The motto “In God We Trust” was changed, resulting in a small motto and a larger motto. The coin with the small motto appears to be much more valuable.

I recommend you contact a reputable coin dealer, since value will depend on various factors, including condition and demand.

I’m excited to go with her, but the problem is that we can’t take our two cats. I don’t want to give them up to a shelter, and I’ve asked relatives nearby if they can take them, but they can’t. From my research, pets are allowed to accompany military families to Germany when transferring to a new assignment, or what’s known

as a permanent change of station (PCS). The article “PCS and Your Pet” in military.com explains many of the details involved in moving to an overseas base with your pet.

If your cats are too sick or old to handle the trip, then you should look at finding them a new home.

However, if they’re healthy, several resources are available to help you plan and bring them along.

Get a certificate of health from your veterinarian as soon as possible to avoid any problems with bringing them to a new country.

Coordinate with the military offices that handle the details of

PCS — you likely must contact several — to make travel arrangements for you, your wife and the cats. Find out if more documentation is needed for the cats. You may need to pay for the cats’ transportation, and you’ll have to buy airline-rated pet carriers.

Contact the agency helping you complete the move to Germany.

Also contact the base veterinarian, who may have additional advice in helping you and your cats move smoothly overseas.

eddy is a three-year-old (6/2016) tree walking coonhound. His story is a sad one. He was found abandoned in the woods. We think it was because he just didn’t have it in him to hunt so he was discarded. Teddy was emaciated and terrified.

Teddy gained some weight and he loves people and other dogs.

Teddy was never an inside dog so he is working on house training and he is doing very well. He is a quick learner and will be completely trained very soon so we really do consider him trained.

Teddy loves to snuggle with people and loves his foster brothers too.

He has been neutered, microchipped and is current on vaccinations and he is also on preventatives. Teddy is fostered in Griswold and his adoption donation is $400.

eople notice when Yobany Vargas, Head Cashier and Manager in Training at the Norwich ShopRite is on the job. Customers greet her by name, and co-workers ask her questions about schedules and assignments. When you ask Yobany what she likes most about the job she has had for nearly 10 years, she replies, “The people. Seeing the same customers when they say, ‘hi.’ All the co-workers are friendly.”

Yobany Vargas Born in New Jersey, Yobany moved to Head Cashier & Manager Norwich in 2002 and has lived there ever ShopRite Norwich since. She started as a part-time cashier at ShopRite when she was only 15. “It was my first job,” she says. She was promoted to Head Cashier about three years ago. “I started training as Manager about a year ago.”

Staffing the cash registers at the busy store requires that a person be the friendly face of ShopRite, work quickly and efficiently on the touch screen stations to keep the line moving, and to know the many different kinds of produce, and efficient bagging techniques. “It’s not as easy as it looks. It’s not just scanning items,” Yobany said.

As Head Cashier, she has the additional responsibility of scheduling cashiers, managing staffing if a cashier calls to say they cannot make it, monitoring the stations for problems or questions, and making sure cashiers get regular breaks. She is responsible for how customers flow through the lines and on their way.

Now that she is in Manager Training she is getting additional responsibilities, like learning to close the store. Yobany is a dedicated employee and takes her work and her schedule seriously. She looks forward to a continuing future with ShopRite.

“I love my job,” she says. “I really enjoy it.”

On And Off The Ice With Robbie Baillargeon

A

key point to take away from Robbie Baillargeon’s interview with The Resident is when he said his “biggest goal right now is to try and secure a spot to play hockey somewhere next year. I don’t know where yet, but I’m excited to see where I end up.”

Of course, his long range goal is to play in the National Hockey League.

Regarding Robbie’s hockey career, during his standout 2013-14 season, as a freshman for Boston University, he tallied 10 goals and recorded 17 assists, which placed him fourth among league rookies. Also, he was named to the Hockey East AllRookie team. Then there was the 2016-17 season when, playing for Arizona State University, he scored 9 goals and had 12 assists in 28 games.

Asked by The Resident about the most valuable lessons he has learned from playing hockey, the Enfield resident said, “It’s dedication, perseverance, and hard work. All these things go in the make-up of trying to play professional hockey. There will be times where things don’t go your way, so you just have to keep chipping away at getting better and getting to the point where you want to be as a player. It may not come as quickly as you want, but I guess that’s where character is built.”

Several people have influenced Robbie’s hockey career, one being his father. “He was my coach for many years and has taught me a lot of things that have gotten me where I am today,” Robbie said. He is the one who got me into hockey and is still constantly pushing me to get

Robbie Baillargeon better and helping me with things off the ice.” Another influence, Robbie said, “is Lincoln Flagg, my coach for my bantam major year. He taught me so many things about the game of hockey. He increased my hockey-sense and playing ability.”

The Resident learned that if Robbie, 23, were to interview three hockey players, one of them would be Mike Modano (The other two are Nick Bonino of Pittsburgh and retired Nicklas Lidstrom of Detroit.) A member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Mike began his NHL career in 1989-90 with the Minnesota North Stars; in 1993 the franchise moved to Dallas, Texas. His NHL career lasted 21 years, and he had 561 goals and 813 assists, retiring after the 2009-10 season as the highest scoring NHL player born in the United States.

Off the ice Robbie recently graduated from Arizona State University with a Master’s degree in Sports Law and Business. He also has a Bachelor’s degree in history from Boston University.

Of his college experience, Robbie

said, “The most valuable life lesson I learned in college was time management. Playing hockey and going to school is almost like having two full time jobs.” He added, “Hockey is the longest college season for any sport, almost yearround, so you’re constantly trying to manage your time to make sure you complete all work for your classes along with hockey practice, workouts, and travel. If you traveled as much as we did this year, it was pretty challenging.”

Final point: For dog lovers and football fans, Robbie just purchased a dog “in Arizona that I named Brady, after Tom Brady,” and “I’ll be bringing him home in August.”

Jack Aylmer Resident Sports Commentator big fourth inning from the offense, along with some solid pitching gave the Mystic Schooners a 5-1 win over the Danbury Westerners at the Shipyard during a July 4 matchup between the in-state rivals.

The University of Alabama’s Sonny Potter started for Mystic, threw his best game of the year while setting a season high in innings pitched for himself. Sonny went 5.1 innings, allowed just one run on two hits while striking out two batters. The Schooner bullpen then provided some excellent innings of relief for their starter to help earn him the victory. Kellen Croce, Logan Lessard, and last week’s NECBL Pitcher of the Week Kevin Chandler, threw the final 3.2 innings and only gave up three hits between them.

Mystic’s offense was able to secure a lead for the team in the fourth inning from which they never looked back. Shortstop John Trousdale and left fielder Tommy Jew started it off with back-toback singles to get the Schooners rolling. John eventually scored on a wild pitch, while designated hitter Phil Capra simultaneously earned his first hit and RBI of the NECBL season on a single up the middle which allowed Tommy to score. After first basemen Andruw Gazzola singled, center fielder Cam Johnson drove in both Phil and Andruw with a single to make it a 4-0 Schooners lead after four.

Danbury got a solo homerun in the top of the fifth, but Mystic tacked on one more run in the bottom of the same inning. Jew singled in Trousdale who had singled

earlier in the inning to give the game its final score of 5-1.

The win comes on the heels of a loss to the Westerners two days prior. On July 2, Danbury defeated the Schooners 7-4, with all seven of the Westerners’ runs coming in the first two innings. Mystic rebounded on July 3 with a big win over the Newport Gulls, another NECBL Southern Division foe. The Schooners beat the Gulls 8-5 on their home field and carried that momentum over into their Independence Day contest against Danbury.

Mystic now sits at second place in the NECBL Southern Division with a 13-7 mark on the year. They trail the 15-5 first place Ocean State Waves by just two games.

However, third place Danbury is not far behind the Schooners with a 13-10 record.

The Best Time To Catch Fluke

F

luke fishing exploded during Independence Day weekend, and some skippers and anglers are saying that this may be the best fluke season in years, according to Pat Abate of Rivers End Tackle.

“One angler, fishing in Rhode Island waters, weighed in a 10.90-pound fish to take over second place in our fluke contest,” Pat said. “He also reported a nice limit of other big fluke weighing between 6 and 8 pounds in addition to the 10.90 pounder.”

Skippers of the Frances Fleet are reporting fine fluke fishing, too.

Over the Fourth of July weekend, one angler caught and released a doormat fluke that measured 30.5 inches long, said Capt. Matt Cox. He said anglers aboard caught and kept many more large fluke.

The waters off Rhode Island’s beaches are holding good numbers of fluke, but the best bite has been around Block Island. Fish near the windmills or off the Southeast corner of the island, advised Matt Conti of Snug Harbor Marina.

The waters off Isabella Beach on Fishers Island should be holding flatfish, too.

Please remember to check regulations in the state where you’re fishing for fluke.

Striper fishing in Connecticut waters has slowed a bit, but the bite around Block Island remains pretty steady. “There are tons of bunker in the Connecticut River with not a whole lot of fish under them,” said Pat Abate. “Experienced anglers in a mile of the river mouth have been averaging between two and eight fish per trip on live bunker...with a few fish in the 30-pound-plus class mixed in. One local charter captain reported that just [before Independence Day], a fresh slug of

bass moved in off some of the reefs west of the river.

“We hear of very good fishing around Block Island for bass right now with a lot of sand eels around. We also heard Montauk has picked up as well.”

The black sea bass bite continues to improve everywhere, according to several sources. Capt.

Rich DeLuca of the Frances Fleet reported that many anglers caught limits of sea bass, including several jumbo fish, over the Independence Day weekend. Just before the weekend, many of the kids fishing aboard the Seven Bs caught some large sea bass during the Rhode Island Saltwater Anglers annual three-day fishing camp. They fished Nebraska Shoals.

In Connecticut, sea bass have been biting in the waters off Clinton, Pat Abate said.

Scup fishing continues to improve in CT and Rhode Island, according to several sources.

Bluefish have been feeding on menhaden in the lower Connecticut River, and they have been preying on schools of squid off Rhode Island’s beaches.

Active Over 55

ow many times have you heard someone who is over 55 say I just had a Senior Moment? Well it usually means they have had a lapse in memory. Let’s look at aging from a different angle: a Boomer Angle. This new column is about how those over 55 can be active, invigorating and just plain young, interesting, creative individuals.

The body might be a little on the worn side, gray sometimes colored over but the spirit that made them a favorite relative, a close and personal friend is still there. All their unique and vibrant thoughts just operate at a slower and more deliberate pace.

Yes, I speak from experience.

No, I am not sharing my age… it isn’t significant. But I want to share some of the exciting happenings in the area so you will finally get to realize how productive one can be after the first and second acts of your life. Even romance can be possible if you open yourself to discovering new friends and do not fall into thinking life is over.

For example, the Groton Senior Citizens “Club 55” does some amazing things for the

community and they are ambitious enough to take on a huge project to replace and upgrade to a LED Sign at the entrance of the municipal buildings which house the library, senior center and youth sport complex. They donated the startup funds for the design which will require thousands of dollars.

Being aware that this will be a community effort, they are reaching out to the community to participate through a donation solicitation both on the Town of Groton website and through fundraising efforts.

Groton’s “Club 55” recently had a Sunday afternoon Line Dancing event which had a fun loving group standing side by side, performing a series of complex steps to various popular tunes. Plans are in the works to follow up with another dance fundraiser.

Keep moving is their mantra.

Remember age is just a number…there is lots of living to be done. Enjoy the summer and look for another Boomer Angle in the Fall.
