Selfie in Stockton – April 2016 Eat an Apple – July 2016 Local artist Jimi La Rock was commissioned to create the cover for the first edition of The Current. His artwork perfectly captured the vision our team had in mind for the publication.

“Selfie in Stockton” became the face (no pun intended) of The Current. Jimi’s art was not only featured on the April 2016 ARTBEAT edition, but it was also used for our entire marketing campaign and could be seen all over Stockton on billboards, mugs, T-shirts, banners, posters and more.

We turned to Jimi once again for the July 2016 EAT edition cover. “Eat an Apple” was an existing piece of art in LaRock’s collection. We had to have it and he graciously obliged.

It seemed only fitting that the cover for the FILM edition should be created using the medium it was named for. Lucky for us local artist Rich Turner’s tool of choice has always been a camera, and we could think of no one that has mastered the art of photography like Rich has. We knew Rich had captured some amazing shots from the set of Bound for Glory, a film that was shot here in Stockton in 1976. Rich granted us the honor of using one of them for our cover.

The photo represented a photographer, using film, to capture a movie being filmed. How’s that for tying up an entire theme in one shot?

That particular cover was magical.

Shaun Supnet Life’s Spectrum – August 2017 Local artist Shaun Supnet’s perfect and colorful design made a beautiful statement on our PRIDE edition. The abstract beauty of Shaun’s art leaves its interpretation up to the viewer. Shaun’s work becomes whatever the beholder happens to see in it. There is also something very hypnotizing and calming about Shaun’s designs.

he premiere edition of The Current, published March 20, 2016, featured the article “City on the Verge” by Jennifer Torres. It was an early peek into the very promising revitalization of downtown Stockton and the local people hell bent on making it happen.

At the time, the Downtown Stockton Alliance had been tasked with…“advancing the vision of an 18-hour downtown. A place where people can browse a boutique, enjoy a meal, see a play, order a drink – and not just from 9 to 5, Monday through Friday.”

Fast forward to today, and it is easy to see that their mission has not fallen by the wayside. The list of new businesses that have opened their doors since the article appeared is nothing short of impressive.

While most would agree that we still have a long way to go before we can enjoy the vibrant and thriving downtown Stockton that we all dream about, one cannot deny that if the momentum of the past 2 years continues to build as it has, our humble downtown may just become a true destination city center in no time.
