Edison High Football Why he Won The Edison High football coach orchestrated a historic run for the Vikings in the 2018-2019 season. With the help of a super-sized coaching staff and a talented roster, Guyton’s squad won a San Joaquin Athletic Association title, Edison’s first league title since 1977. The team finished with a 9-3 overall record, and an unblemished 5-0 record in the SJAA.

It was like a lot of hard work paid off. It’s not me winning the award. It’s our coaching staffing winning the award. This is an awesome event for these kids, it’s a way to show the city we do have positive things going on in the community and it shows Stockton is someplace special.”

In the fall, Hoornaert served as the head coach that led the St. Mary’s boys water polo team to a Sac-Joaquin Section Division I title, with the Rams defeating Jesuit 10-7 in the championship game. Then, in the spring, the Hoornaert-led boys swim team won a section Division III crown. Both the water polo and swim teams won Tri-City Athletic League titles this season as well.

From the outset of the Weston Ranch boys basketball team’s season, head coach Chris Teevan maintained that the Cougars’ goal was to make the State Open Division, and it would likely take winning out to make that happen. Under his guidance, Weston Ranch did exactly that, winning 30 straight games and a section championship to punch its ticket to the Open Division.

Matthews’ Bruins went on to make a deep state playoff run, getting to within a game of the state championship.

Pires, the only girls soccer coach in the 22-year history of Sierra High, led the Timberwolves to their third consecutive Valley Oak League Championship, and 14th overall. Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa Brookside christian Why he Won Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa came to Brookside Christian High as a freshman, having left his home and family in the Dominican Republic to pursue an education and his basketball dream. He spent his first year at the school learning English, getting accustomed to his new surroundings and spending time on the basketball court. This year, Geronimo’s work paid off in a big way. The sophomore became one of the top scorers in the Sac-Joaquin Section, leading the Knights to a 12-0 record in the Central California Athletic Alliance. Brookside Christian reached the Division V section championship, where they trailed Argonaut by double digits late in the game. But the Knights came roaring back to tie the game as the clock ticked down. Then, after a steal and a foul, Geronimo stood at the free throw line with .3 seconds left in the championship and a chance to win it all for his team. He sunk both. Geromino was at a basketball camp Thursday night, and Brookside coach Luke Williams accepted the award on his behalf. “To leave his family and come here to play basketball is amazing,” Williams said. “He’s an amazing kid, a very hard working young man, polite, caring. He’s the type of kid to put in the work to get exactly what he wants.”

Keannu Linnell

lathrop

Why he Won At 10 years old, Keannu Linnell was determined to be a quarterback, and didn’t let his size get in the way. By the time he was a sophomore at Lathrop High School, he was a starting QB. It was towards the end of that same season that he began to experience double vision every time he dropped back. But he was determined not to let his team down. Now, Keannu’s determination has shown as strong as ever. After his sophomore year, Keannu was diagnosed with a germ cell tumor. He spent nearly half a year in the hospital in a long fight that included other complications, including a stroke and struggles with waking from an induced coma. Keannu battled his way through all of it. The 17-year-old returned to Lathrop High to continue his studies. And, with the help of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, he got his shot at returning to football. With the help of a virtual reality company and the Lathrop community, the Make-AWish Foundation recreated an entire game, with Keannu experiencing it all through the lenses of the quarterback position. For the game-winning two-point conversion, Keannu made a triumphant sprint into the end zone. When Keannu removed his headset, his entire team swarmed him. Once again, Keannu had led his team, and it was his determination that made it possible.

BEAR CREEK BASKETBALL

Why they Won The Bruins’ young, talented roster had a season for the ages in 2018-2019, starting with their second straight 10-0 run through the San Joaquin Athletic Association. Bear Creek came up short in search of a section championship, but rebounded for a huge run at the state level. The Bruins won three times in the

state tournament, highlighted by a 57-47 overtime victory over Antelope in the Northern California semifinal. Bear Creek’s season ended with a loss to Bishop O’Dowd in the regional final, coming up just short of playing for a state title.

RIPON VOLLEYBALL

SIERRA SOCCER

The Indians finished second in the Trans Valley League with a 10-2 record in the regular season, but their year was just getting started. Ripon made the Sac-Joaquin Section’s Division IV semifinals, losing to TVL champ Hilmar. But that’s still not where Ripon’s story ends. The Indians qualified for the state playoffs, winning three straight matches to make the Northern California final, one win away from playing for a state championship.

Regarded as one of the powerhouse programs in the area for years, the Timberwolves turned it up a notch this year. Not only did they win their third straight Valley Oak League title, and 14th overall, but Sierra made its way to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III championship. Once there, the Timberwolves played an overtime battle with Vista del Lago, finally claiming the title on a game-winning score by senior Jadyn Shinn. Sierra won a first-round game in the state playoffs before concluding its year in the regional semifinals.

RIPON SOFTBALL Ripon had a truly impressive 2019 season, going 24-2 overall and winning the Trans Valley League title with a 11-1 record. The Indians won twice to advance through the winner’s bracket of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV championships, then beat Calaveras not once, but twice to earn their section crown. It’s Ripon’s second section title in four years, having won the 2016 Division V championship.

WESTON RANCH BASKETBALL

Why they Won Winning 30 straight games and a Sac-Joaquin Section title may have come as a surprise to some, but not to the Weston Ranch boys basketball team. The Cougars were dead set on making the State Open Division, and rose through both the

28

section and state rankings on the way to a championship season. The Cougars got their wish, beating Central Catholic in the Division III championship before going on to play a tough De La Salle team in the opening round of the state playoffs.

ST. MARY’S WATER POLO

The Rams lost their season opener and the fourth game of the season, then never lost again. St. Mary’s swept play in the Tri-City Athletic League with a 10-0 record, and won its first two playoff games by a combined margin of 26 goals. In the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Championship game, the Rams outscored Jesuit 6-3 in the second half to come away with a 10-7 title-clinching victory, capping off a 28-2 season.

BROOKSIDE CHRISTIAN BASKETBALL

Winning came early and often for Brookside Christian, which won the first five games of the season and went on to go 12-0 in the Central California Athletic Alliance. The Knights won twice to advance to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V championship. They trailed to last year’s state runner-up Argonaut by double digits at one point in the game, but came all the way back to win in the last second of the game. Brookside Christian went on to win a state playoff game before the end of its season.

CALAVERAS WRESTLING Calaveras opened the season as the defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division V team champion, armed with a talented roster and a first-year head coach in Ryan Upchurch. The squad went on to do it again, beating Hilmar 51-25 for Calaveras’ second consecutive team title. Wrestlers Elliot Houghten and Donivan Giangregorio were among the leaders for Calaveras, going on to place in the top six in their respective divisions at the section masters tournament.

Numbers. accolades. achievements. By Nick Woodard Record Staff Writer

STOCKTON — From the court to the classroom and everywhere in between, a calm, consistent concentration has been Taylor Low’s specialty. The numbers, accolades and achievements have spoken for themselves. The latest for the recent Lincoln High graduate embodies all of it. Low, the longtime leader and point guard for the Trojans girls basketball team, has been named the recipient of the 2019 Charles Washington Award. The honor is given annually to the senior student-athlete who best exhibits athletic and academic achievement and a dedication to community service. Low is the 15th winner of the award, which was established in 2005. It’s named in honor of Charles Washington, who was the first African-American high school varsity coach in Northern California. Washington also served as an administrator and counselor. He died in February 2009 at age 76. Objectively, Low exemplified the traits of a Charles Washington Award winner. In her four years as a varsity player for Lincoln, Low was a three-year captain, two-time Lincoln MVP and two-time Tri-City Athletic League MVP among a number of other accomplishments. That said, Low was the Trojans’ leading scorer just once. It was her presence on the court that made her a captain starting in her sophomore season, and her pivotal role for Lincoln that was widely recognized across the league “She just had the respect of everyone,” Lincoln head coach Chris Roemer said. “They knew she was the most diligent. It seemed

only right to have her be the captain. She set precedence.” All the while, Low was excelling in the classroom. She maintained a 4.59 gradepoint average throughout high school, earned the Pinnacle Award for finishing in the top one percent of her class, and was a Distinguished Senior Scholar. Beyond that, Low made the Principal’s Honor Roll all four years, was a California Scholarship Federation Lifetime Member, and was a National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists Award winner. Off the basketball court and outside

the classroom, Low spent her time giving back to the community. She was a tutor, an assistant youth basketball coach and a volunteer at spaghetti feeds and rummage sales. Low also gave her time to events for the California Dental Association, Give Kids a Smile, Habitat for Humanity and more. Asked about the motivation to get involved, Low said she wanted to do her part to make an impact in the area she’s grown up in. “My parents have always pushed me to give back to the community,” Low said. “I think it’s very important, and I hope to

continue it in the future.” Low plans to attend the University of San Diego. In the future, she said, she’d like to return to the area as a medical professional and continue her efforts in making an impact in this community. “Going forward, I think the community service and all the things I’ve done will make me a more empathetic person,” Low said, “and someone who will give back in the future.” Contact reporter Nick Woodard at (209) 546-8272 or nwoodard@recordnet.com.
