And the Cancer Ran Away With the Spoon Many foods are touted as helping cancer survivors get – and stay – well. Here’s a guide to which foods really do help prevent disease and encourage recovery.

Foods that do the best job of nourishing our bodies may, at the same time, cause certain cancers to “starve” – at least in a figurative sense.

For example, fresh or frozen berries might inhibit a tumor’s ability to form blood vessels, and without a blood supply, the tumor cannot survive.

Other foods can help prevent cancer from forming in the first place.

“The relationship between food and cancer is complex,” says Dr. Mark Fesen, a Hutchinson, Kan.-based oncologist and author of “Surviving the Cancer System” (AMACOM, 2009). Scientific studies can be confusing or even contradictory, but the consensus among doctors and researchers is that a daily diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains can protect against a wide range of cancers.

However, “Your total amount of calories eaten is the most important factor in the risk of developing cancer,” Fesen says. “Obesity is linked to several cancers, including prostate, colon and breast cancers.”

Substitute fish, poultry and beans for red and processed meats whenever possible, advises epidemiologist Dr. Julia Greer, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

As for supplements, “The only one I recommend is vitamin D,” which reduces the risk of colorectal and breast cancer, says biochemist Richard Beliveau, chairholder in cancer prevention and treatment at the University of Quebec at Montreal.

Not all of the following cancerfighting foods are suitable for people undergoing treatment. Cancer patients have special dietary needs they should

discuss with their physicians. For example, “Your protein needs increase during treatment,” Greer says, “and because of side effects such as mouth and esophageal sores, eating acidic foods such as tomatoes and citrus fruit is a very bad idea.”

Berries Berries are bursting with compounds that can slow the growth and metabolism of cancerous cells. An antioxidant in raspberries has been shown to inhibit cervical cancer growth and may decrease pancreatic cancer risk and skin cancer cell division.

Citrus fruits Rich in vitamin C, which may fight breast cancer, citrus fruits may also reduce the risk of esophageal cancer.

The fruits’ pectin may lower the risk of ovarian cancer and delay the growth of cancerous cells in men diagnosed with recurrent prostate cancer. Peel and eat oranges and grapefruits in sections because spooning them out leaves behind a white membrane packed with cancer-fighting flavonoids, Greer says.

Tomatoes Tomatoes contain lycopene, which is linked to a decreased risk of pancreatic and prostate cancers. Go ahead and hit the sauce – heating tomatoes does not destroy lycopene; in fact, it enhances it. Ounce for ounce, tomato paste, spaghetti sauce and ketchup contain more lycopene than a raw tomato, Greer says.

Whole grains High intake levels of whole grains correlate with reduced pancreatic, colon, endometrial and ovarian cancer risks.

Grapes Red varieties contain high levels of resveratrol, which can decrease or stop the growth of breast, prostate, pancreatic, stomach, liver and colorectal cancers.

Tart cherries This fruit naturally depletes the body of cancer-causing substances. They can also slow the growth of cancerous cells, particularly in the case of colon and breast cancers.

Pomegranates Pomegranates contain four chemical components that have been shown to inhibit prostate cancer cell growth.

Antioxidants found in pomegranates and their juice may also help prevent breast and lung cancer cells from dividing and can even kill cancer cells.

Leafy greens Green is good – leafy greens, such as spinach, can decrease the risk of breast, colon, skin, lung, head, neck, ovarian and stomach cancers.

“Watercress intake, in particular, is associated with decreased ovarian cancer,” Greer says.

Cruciferous vegetables Studies suggest that broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and bok choy help ward off prostate, lung, breast, head, neck and pancreatic cancers. “The compounds in cruciferous vegetables have been shown to keep cancers from forming, as well as to slow the growth of tumors that are already present,” Greer says.

Garlic and onions Garlic may reduce stomach cancer and women’s risk of colon cancer.

Onions may play a role in fighting lung, colon, bladder, skin, prostate, stomach and endometrial cancers, as well as leukemia. Red and yellow see Cancer, page 8

Nuts and seeds Nuts and seeds contain healthy monounsaturated fat, which has been shown to protect against breast cancer.

The mineral selenium – found in certain kinds of nuts – may inhibit the development or growth of prostate, lung and bladder cancer cells, while also protecting against colon cancer.

Green tea “Tea is the best source of anti-cancer compounds called catechins, and green tea contains about three times as much as black tea,” Greer says. One study showed that drinking three or more cups of green tea each day reduced the recurrence rate of Stage I breast cancer.

Red wine Drinking moderate amounts of red wine may decrease the risk of kidney cancer and Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas. But beware:

Drinking moderate to heavy amounts of alcohol has been shown to increase the risk of cancers of the upper airway and digestive tract, as well as breast and colorectal cancers.

Even one glass of alcohol a day may increase a woman’s risk of getting breast cancer.

Beliveau recommends that women limit their intake to one alcoholic beverage per day, and men should have no more than two.

Dark chocolate Extracts of dark chocolate can inhibit the formation of breast, colon and prostate cancers, and can decrease the division rate of liver cancer cells. to Ask Your Doctor Before Starting a Weight Loss Program

Every fitness program and diet reminds users to talk to a doctor before starting use. So, what should you ask?

“Before beginning a weight loss program, talk to your doctor” seems to be the footnote of every plan. Find out what you should ask, and if it’s really necessary. Ask these questions to get your doctor – and yourself – more engaged in your weight loss.

1. How much weight do I need to lose?

You may have already decided – or been told – that you need to shed some pounds, but asking your doctor exactly how much you need to lose in order to reach a healthy body weight is essential. Using a patient’s body mass index, which takes both height and weight into consideration, doctors can tell someone “whether they fall in the overweight range or the obese range and really how much weight they need to lose to get out of an unhealthy situation,” says Dr. Salila Kurra, co-director of Columbia University’s Adrenal Center in New York City.

Then, you (or your doctor) can set realistic goals in terms of how long it should take to lose a certain amount of weight.

2. Do you have any concerns about me participating in a weight loss program, regarding my health and my medications?

“The most important thing is to make sure that whatever underlying conditions [the patient] may have are not going to be adversely affected by whatever weight program they decide to start,” Kurra says. Diet and activity may need to be tailored accordingly, as well as medication. If a patient has a medical condition such as diabetes or hypertension, it may be necessary to adjust their medication’s dosage so they don’t become overmedicated as they lose weight, says Dr. Robert Kushner, clinical director of

Northwestern’s Comprehensive Center on Obesity based in Chicago, Ill. Not every medicine will be affected by changes in weight, but it’s good to check.

3. Do you recommend a certain program, or know anything about the one I am interested in?

Asking you doctor for recommendations is “a good way to get an individualized approach to weight loss,” Kurra says.

Your doctor can offer suggestions for diet or weight loss programs that fit your specific medical conditions or lifestyle. Additionally, “the doctor may have experience with some other patients of how certain programs have performed, or the balanced nature of the program and the effectiveness of the program,” Kushner adds.

4. Are there any limitations as to what I can do?

Some patients may need to limit the nutrients they consume. “If somebody has diabetes [your doctor] may say ‘Make sure that you don’t eat as many simple carbohydrates,’ whereas somebody else may need to have less fat in their diet or less protein,” Kurra says. Also ask your doctor if the amount – or type – of activity you plan on starting is safe for you.

5. Do you need any information on my progress, or need to see me for follow-up visits?

“A lot of patients do like to be monitored by their doctor,” Kushner says, “which has to do with safety” and making sure progress is being made. Furthermore, your doctor may want to receive information from your weight loss program, or have you monitor your own health in order to alert him or her of any abnormalities.

“The more correspondence between the program and the doctor, I think the more they’ll be able to

monitor and evaluate how well that patient is doing,” Kushner says. “So for example, if they get ongoing correspondence and it’s now four months later and the patients lost two pounds, and the patient is 40 pounds overweight, that hopefully would trigger to the doctor ‘You know, I’d like to see you soon so we could talk about maybe some alternatives because that’s not working for you.” …and who else you should consult about your weight Not all doctors say that every patient needs to consult them before beginning a weight loss program. In some cases, maybe your general practitioner isn’t even the best person to talk to. “If a patient is in fairly good health, is not on a lot of medications that would be affected by weight loss, then I’m not sure the patient necessarily needs to check in with their doctor and ask questions before joining something like Weight Watchers,” says Kushner.

Typically, he adds, patients don’t talk to their doctors and just start a weight loss program on their own.

However, not everyone should jump right into a new program sans doctorapproval. Kushner says that if a patient has any medical problems, symptoms they’re unsure about or hasn’t seen a doctor in a while, they should set up a consultation. “We have probably over a hundred million people in this country who would benefit from an active weight loss program. The doctor is not in a position to treat every single one of those patients. However, if you’re seeing a doctor, that doctor should be part of the treatment plan,” Kushner adds.

Dr. Scott Kahan, director of the National Center for Weight and Wellness in Washington, D.C., says that many doctors aren’t well-versed in nutrition, weight loss and weight management.

“Unfortunately, so far in our medical system, it almost isn’t worth asking most doctors because they have no background in this,” Kahan says. “They don’t learn about weight management or nutrition or the like in medical school, and so usually they are just as uninformed and confused about it all as their patients are.” Kahan notes that it’s good to talk to your doctor, but often they won’t be able to give much advice.

Instead, he recommends going to a comprehensive weight management center, where doctors who specialize in weight management, nutrition and obesity, such as psychiatrists and endocrinologists, as well as psychologists, dieticians and exercise specialists can give insight and support.

“Now if you don’t have access to that, then you may be able to piece that together,” Kahan says. “You can go to your doctor and get a medical evaluation, you can go to a dietician and get a nutrition evaluation.

An exercise physiologist can help you with an exercise plan, and a psychologist who specializes in the behavioral aspects of diet and nutrition and behavior change can examine another aspect of your weight.

But Kurra says that talking to your general practitioner is a great place to start. From there, they can determine if you need to see a specialist.

Smart as a Social Butterfly Seniors with a jam-packed calendar could slow the progression of memory loss.

The key to retaining your memory as you age may lie in spreading your wings, social butterfly-style.

A new study by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health found evidence that elderly people in the U.S. who have an active social life may have a slower rate of memory decline.

“This study adds to our evidence that social interactions are important for health and well-being,” says Karen Ertel, lead author of the study and a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Society, Human Development and Health at HSPH. The study, which appeared in the July 2008 issue of the American Journal of Public Health, used data gathered from 1998 to 2004 from the Health and Retirement Study, a large, nationally representative population of U.S. adults 50 years and older.

Memory decline among the most integrated was less than half the rate among the least integrated, according to the study. These results were independent of sociodemographic factors and baseline health conditions.

“Interestingly, we found that social integration may be particularly important for individuals with low levels of education (fewer than 12 years of school completed),” Ertel says. “Elderly with low levels of education experienced, on average, more rapid decline in memory, but also a suggestion of a greater benefit due to social integration.”

Researchers assessed social integration according to marital status,

engaging in volunteer activities, and frequency of contact with parents, children, and neighbors, Ertel says.

Several hypotheses exist about why social interactions may protect against cognitive decline. Ertel highlighted three of them: 1. Social interactions present complex cognitive and memory challenges.

Memory loss and dementia pose a major public health burden among the elderly U.S. population. The results suggest that increasing social integration may help slow memory decline among older Americans and could help alleviate the public health burden, particularly because the aging population in the U.S. is expected to increase substantially.

2. Social connections may encourage elder folks to engage in more healthful behaviors, such as physical activity or using medications consistently and properly.

3. Finally, the good feelings, emotional validation, and greater sense of purpose that may be derived from

activities.

“When you get to be this age, a lot of people need social interaction, which stimulates your brain,” Carpenter says. “It also improves your physical fitness skills, since your brain tells your body what to do. It’s all tied in together.”

Deter Diabetes with Diet,

Exercise

As the rate of diabetes in the U.S. continues to rise, now more than ever, experts say, you are what you eat.

The headlines are true – the rate of diabetes in the United States is quickly escalating to epidemic proportions.

According to the American Diabetes Association, Alexandria, Va., 20.8 million Americans – 7 percent of the population – have diabetes, and Type 2 is the most common form of the disease. With Type 2, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the body’s cells ignore the insulin.

Glucose (sugar) is the basic fuel for cells, and insulin enables the body to transfer glucose from the blood to the cells. When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, the cells become starved for energy and, over time, high blood-glucose levels may damage your eyes, kidneys, feet, nerves or heart, and even lead to death.

However, while other factors – age, family history, impaired glucose tolerance and race/ethnicity – can influence the risk for Type 2 diabetes, experts say that changing your diet is one of the best ways to help keep the disease at bay.

According to a 12-year study of more than 25,000 people conducted

by Matthias B. Schulze, Ph.D., and colleagues at the German Institute of Human Nutrition, people who frequently eat whole grains have a lower risk of developing Type 2 than those who eat little or no whole grains.

“The mechanisms are not entirely clear,” says Schulze, “but might relate to the fiber and magnesium content of whole grains. Interestingly, people who regularly drink coffee are also at lower risk of getting Type 2.” On the contrary, he says, red meat and processed meats seem to increase diabetes risk, as does consuming large

amounts of alcohol.

Marilyn Tanner-Blasiar, a pediatric dietitian at the Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, and a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association, Chicago, recommends a more customized approach. “Reducing the risk of getting Type 2 is not about one food or food item; it’s about a combined overall healthy diet,” she says. “Each person has individual eating habits that can be fine-tuned to create a healthier diet. By working with a registered dietitian, you get a rundown on what would work best for you.”

But Tanner-Blasiar does have a few general guidelines that everyone

can benefit from. “Fruits and veggies are packed with wonderful vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and fiber,” she says, as well as being naturally fat free. She also recommends low-fat dairy products, which contain calcium and potassium – vitamins important for blood pressure control. Low-fat foods, in general, help with weight management (obesity is directly linked to diabetes) in addition to helping you to refocus on fueling your body rather than simply filling it.

According to background information included in Schulze’s study, the number of people diagnosed with diabetes worldwide may increase from 171 million in 2000 to 370

million by 2030. The associated health-care costs emphasize the need for effective prevention. “The most important modifiable risk factor for Type 2 diabetes is body fat,” says Schulze. “Diet, in combination with regular physical activity, plays an important part in maintaining a healthful body weight.”
