INSPIRATION

OWNERSHIP

Thoughts. A group of thoughts that have arisen during my latest meditation. And, the one word that that emerged from all of that is “ownership”.

Ownership is something that we all aspire to, and I'm certain it's a key focus for people in the real estate profession. They aspire to ownership in virtually every aspect of their lives, and promote it to their clients as they search for their perfect home.

Ownership in everything that they do from, from "this is my car" to "this is my home," "this is my spouse," "this is my deal," "this is my client," and even "these are my mistakes.". You know, ownership of everything. I wonder how many of us, joyously and purposely and boldly take ownership of our mistakes. When we own the things that didn't work out, not with regret or guilt, but by simply acknowledging that some details went awry. We learn from it, we adapt, and we move forward.

However, it's not an “either-or” scenario, as that essentially negates everything that comes before it. It doesn't have to be an utter negation, just because it didn't work out in your favour that time.

It can be an “and” because it adds to your story. Some of the greatest breakthroughs I've had in my life occurred after did not go as planned.

For instance, I got married four years or so after a failed & abusive relationship. I met someone new,and a year later, we got married. I wouldn't have had such clarity about my ideal partner, my divine partner, and the characteristics I value in a partner. I gained both clarity and peace.

I think owning our mistakes, past failures, and difficulties is just as important as owning our wins These decisions get you to where you are and help shape our journeys, spark ideas and thoughts, and guide us on paths.

Ownership exists in many other countless ways as well. It involves owning your life choices, recognizing that you are making the decisions and the author of your life story.

It's up to you to shape the narrative and decide what you do with the story.

None of us chose the circumstances of our birth, the colour of our skin, our sexuality, or the many other aspects that make up our identity. Life happened to us, and it's the basis of who we are. However, the story that unfolds from here is up to us.

Insight comes from those who have experienced darkness and made their way out.

I broke my neck and the story that I chose to believe was vastly different from what others expected, especially from the medical community. I took ownership of my life story in a way that was not expected of those surrounding me at the time. My spine was broken. My body felt broken. Seeing me that way, in a broken physical state, it was not in their minds to think: Oh, this guy is going to be just fine. He's gonna get up any second now, run 5k's and be super successful with multiple businesses on the horizon, and be happier than ever. An inspiration to everyone, even himself.

No one thought that. They could not see that and honestly, I couldn't see it either.I took ownership of my life story for the first time.

Prior to my accident and the years that followed,, I was living the default version influenced by external suggestions and societal norms.

Hey, people that look like us, do this. People that look like us, do that. People like us, do not do this and people like us, do not do that.

These were the default suggestions of the people around me who believed they were helping me with the circumstances I found myself. However, I soon realized that I wanted more and wanted to live on my own terms. I would not be defined by what everyone believed I should be. Rather, I reached a point where my life story became a source of inspiration. I'm proud of myself, and I take full ownership of all my choices.

Many of us ponder the purpose of our lives.

For me, the purpose is to live intentionally, to tell my story with purpose, and to make decisions without concerning myself with others' versions of my story. It's about embracing your freedom to shape your narrative.To tell my story on purpose. To make decisions. At the same time I'm not concerned with the possible version that other people are telling about me. While I have the liberty to shape my own story, I must also grant others the freedom to interpret it as they wish too.

The freedom to focus on certain parts, moments, chapters, or words in my story, and that's okay.

This approach lightens the load, freeing us from living someone else's life and making decisions based on others' expectations. It truly frees you. It's a lot less heavy when you're only living your life and not someone else's.

When you're not living and making decisions from the possible reaction of other people, you're freer to make the decisions that feel right. You need to listen to your own intuition.

Your own spiritual centre, that voice that guides us on our path.

By taking ownership, you become the loudest voice in your head, and your life becomes clearer than ever. You intentionally own your life, disregarding others' opinions, making your decisions based on what feels right. This is your story, and you have complete ownership.

We’ve all had those moments where we didn't feel we had real ownership in our life. Someone else was making us do things we did not want to do. Someone else was dictating our moves, our choices and our options leaving us feel powerless.

You have the opportunity to never let this happen to you again. Even the unexpected difficulties have value, waiting to be harnessed. I wanted my life to be remembered through the ages, and then I broke my neck. I took full ownership of my entire story, even the seemingly insurmountable challenges, and considered them as opportunities for growth.

Because like I said in the beginning, if I cant look at my problems as opportunities that have lessons and are building blocks, then there's a part of my life story that I don't want, that I can't take ownership of.

Ownership is the ultimate power because it puts you in the driver seat.

“Don’t bury the lede!” – this is a common phrase used in journalism that urges the writer not to hide the most critical component they want to share within other less important information.

When prospecting, for example, stave away from long-winded introductions and start strong with facts and figures. You can say “throughout my career I have sold x number of houses at or above asking and seamlessly relocated hundreds of families into their new homes. How did I do this? With my experience of more than 15 years in real estate, etc.” Once you have their attention, add some color with the next point.

Define your brand – Your branding should have unique and easily identifiable qualities, and these go beyond the visual aspects, such as logo and imagery. For starters, be clear as to the type of agent you are or looking to become. Once you have this clearly defined, use it to add character to your writing. Exhibit consistent branding in your communication through your tone, verbiage, and even the amount of text used.

Do you prefer to be seen as an aggressive go-getter or an expert who lets their work speak for itself? Are there words you always use or others you stay away from? This is all part of your unique brand, whether you realize it or not. It is critical to polish your brand to highlight the desired traits you’d like potential clients to notice the most about you and your business so you can stand out in your own way. Standing out is also closely tied to location.

Choose your channels wisely – in 2023, the record number of social media users increased to 4.9 billion across the world, with the average user now using a mix of six to seven different platforms per month, according to Forbes. What does this mean for you? Not only do you have transactions to complete, clients to meet, and a personal life to fulfill but in between all of this, your marketing requires your attention.

Familiarize yourself with just a handful of social channels that you can quickly and easily navigate and share content to without missing a beat.

Why limit yourself? There are tools and programs available that can help replicate your content in additional channels. If you don’t know how to properly use a social site you can end up with haphazard posts.

Taking on too many accounts and platforms could also lead to you having an abundance of forgotten social profiles with nothing but a blank canvas, making you look like you have no business to show. This also applies to products you’ve enrolled in that you may be paying for on subscription and not utilizing effectively, if at all. Streamlining leads to maximizing.

These are just a few of the steps you can take to enhance your brand through your marketing communications. But always remember that the key to your brand is you.
