The Real Estate Source recently marked its one-year anniversary, a milestone we are thrilled to achieve. From a sole consultant, our company has grown into a network of exceptionally talented individuals.
I founded this company with the aim of supporting brokerages in establishing solid foundations for their businesses.
Earlier this year, my daughter Rose chose to dedicate her school speech to our company. This gesture was incredibly touching and stands as a highlight of my year. Her pride and admiration mean more to me than any professional accomplishment.
To commemorate our first year, Rose interviewed me, offering a unique perspective on the inaugural year of RES. I hope you enjoy reading about our successes and shared experiences.
Mama, you launched your company The Real Estate Source a year ago. Yay! How does it feel to be a business owner? ML
Thank you, sweetheart. It’s pretty cool being a business owner! It's been quite a journey! Launching The Real Estate Source has been a rollercoaster of emotions, but mostly, it's been incredibly rewarding. There's this mix of excitement, nerves, and pride all rolled into one big ball of energy. Every day feels like a new adventure, filled with possibilities and challenges to tackle
But you know what? I think anyone starting something new goes through ups and downs, and it’s important to keep on trying and not give up. Being a business owner has given me the freedom to pursue my passion, make a difference in people's lives, and create something that I can truly call my own. It's a feeling like no other, and I'm grateful for every moment of it.
What was the hardest part of starting your new company? What was the biggest challenge you faced?
e hardest part was overcoming the fear of failure Stepping into the unknown ng that leap of faith can be pretty scary But you know what they say, with great es come great opportunities
est challenge I faced was facing the unknown while having to juggle a lot of things. From being a mama to you and your brother to learning to understand us aspects of entrepreneurship – from setting up operations and managing to building a brand and attracting clients. It was like trying to solve a giant ithout knowing what the final picture would look like. But through ance, hard work, and a whole lot of trial and error, we found our way forward. ing back, I can honestly say that overcoming those challenges has made the all the more rewarding.
LLThat’s cool! Okay, so you always tell me to always keep trying. I guess you have to do that as an adult too. What do you like most about your work?
Absolutely, sweetheart Just like you, I believe in never giving up and always pushing forward, no matter what challenges come our way And you know what? That mindset has been so important in my work too.
What I like most about my work is the opportunity to make a difference. Every day, I get to help people turn their dreams into reality by finding the perfect home for them. There's something incredibly rewarding about seeing the joy on their faces when they walk into a house and know it's the one. And beyond that, I love the creative aspect of my job – finding new ways to showcase properties, connect with clients, and make the buying and selling process as smooth and enjoyable as possible. It's a job that's always changing and challenging, but it's also incredibly fulfilling. Not to mention,I have met some amazing people, reconnected with some old friends and colleagues, which is really nice!

Do you like your job?
Yes! I honestly love what I do. I think that is the key, to be honest Yes, there are days that can be tough, and you have to find ways to deal with those bad days What is really cool about what I do is that every day is different - one day I can be helping a client through tough time in their business, and on another day I am creating fun and cool marketing content for another client, the next writing a blog post or strategy. I love my role as a “fixer”, where I assist clients often when they are facing some tough challenges.
Like what? What do you mean by “fixer”?
Well, sometimes companies face challenges where someone quits unexpectedly or they need some help with marketing services like graphic design and planning for their companies. My team can help provide ongoing support for as long as our clients need the help I have a network of consultants or freelancers who I work with and trust, and we can help a client with whatever they need

That’s nice. I like that you get to help people. Okay, it’s been a year. What would you say is next for you and The Real Estate Source in the next year?
Oh, that’s a big question! So much can happen in year. I see endless possibilities for growth and evolution. Like I always say to you, the sky is the limit, Rose! As the needs of our clients change, so will our services to ensure we can provide them the best support and guidance. The company grew and changed so much this past year, and I learned a lot about how to support my clients We will continue to pivot and change, building custom solutions and hopefully keep helping people with their companies!

Every dollar saved can make a significant impact on your bottom line In today’s very visual, highly digital age, the need for high-quality visuals to market properties for your clients are undeniable Whether you're a seasoned agent, broker, or work in a real estate office, you are incredibly busy and may not have the time or resources to create them and it may make sense to outsource graphic design to alleviate the stress
The goal is to help you to streamline the process and help you get to where you need to be without breaking the bank Especially if you are looking for ongoing support, it’s important to find the right team or process to support your business
As a graphic designer with several years of experience, here are some invaluable tips to help you make the most out of your collaboration:
1
Before reaching out to your marketing team or graphic designer, gather all the necessary assets for your project This includes property images, logos, branding guidelines, and any specific text or content you want to include. By providing comprehensive materials upfront, you'll save time for both you and the designer, reducing the need for revisions and iterations.
2
Efficiency is key when working with graphic designers Instead of sending large files back and forth via email, consider using cloud-based file sharing platforms such as Google Drive Tools like these allow for seamless collaboration, enabling real-time updates and easy access to files from anywhere. Additionally, organizing consistently labeled files into clearly labeled folders will further streamline the process, making it easier for both parties to locate and reference assets.
3
While professional graphic designers bring expertise and creativity to the table, there are instances where you can leverage DIY design tools to save costs Platforms like Canva offer userfriendly interfaces and pre-designed templates that allow you to create visuals for your business. For simple tasks such as social media graphics or email newsletters, consider exploring these tools or working with a designer to create templates that you can leverage consistently.
4
Provide Clear Instructions
Communication is so important. To avoid misunderstandings and unnecessary revisions, provide clear and detailed instructions for each project. Clearly outline your expectations, preferred design style, and any specific guidelines or requirements. The more precise you are in your brief or request, the better equipped the designer will be to deliver results that align with your vision.
5
If you anticipate needing multiple design projects over time, consider negotiating a bulk rate. Bundling projects together not only saves money but also fosters a long-term partnership built on mutual trust and understanding. By establishing a consistent working relationship, you'll benefit from streamlined communication and a deeper understanding of your brand's design needs.
Timely feedback is essential for keeping projects on track and avoiding unnecessary delays When reviewing design drafts, provide constructive feedback that is specific and actionable. Go beyond “I Don't like it” and provide specific direction on what aspects you like and dislike, and offer suggestions for improvements. By providing clear guidance early in the process, you'll minimize the need for extensive revisions, ultimately saving time and money.
Consider investing in training or upskilling opportunities for your office staff to develop basic design skills. While not everyone needs to be a graphic design expert, having a basic understanding of design principles can empower your team to better manage an agency or outsourced graphic designer.

Whether you are a seasoned professional or just stepping into the world of real estate, understanding and adapting to the ever-changing seasonal trends of the real estate market will ensure your business remains resilient during the ups and downs. By recognizing the influences of various factors such as school schedules and understanding trends will help craft effective strategies that can mitigate risks and capitalize on opportunities
Weather plays a significant role in shaping the ebb and flow of the real estate market. As winter sets in, the colder temperatures often dissuade potential homebuyers from actively searching for properties. Moreover, the holiday season tends to distract buyers, with many prioritizing family gatherings and celebrations over property purchases Consequently, this period typically witnesses a decline in both demand and sales activity
Similarly, the summer months, particularly July and August, often experience a slowdown in real estate transactions. With children out of school and families embarking on vacations, the pool of potential buyers shrinks during this time. However, it's important to note that these seasonal fluctuations also present unique opportunities for astute real estate professionals
Despite the overall decrease in market activity, the winter season tends to attract more serious and committed buyers. With fewer casual browsers in the market, agents can focus their efforts on serving motivated clients, increasing the likelihood of closing deals. Moreover, reduced competition during the offseason can lead to better negotiation opportunities for both buyers and sellers. Sellers, aware of the seasonal downturn, may be more open to considering competitive offers, potentially resulting in cost savings for buyers.
To effectively navigate these seasonal trends, real estate agents must establish a realistic budget that accounts for seasonal fluctuations and aligns with their annual goals By strategically allocating resources to capitalize
on peak seasons and adjusting marketing strategies accordingly, agents can maximize their ROI and generate more leads.
What does this mean to how you market your business?
As markets fluctuate, it is important to spend wisely Data-driven decision-making is crucial in identifying and targeting peak seasons for specific demographics For instance, if data suggests that buyers interested in homes with pools are most active during certain months, agents can tailor their marketing efforts to capitalize on this trend. Similarly, diversifying one's portfolio by exploring different types of properties and geographical locations can help mitigate risks associated with seasonal market fluctuations.
It is essential to acknowledge that the real estate market can be filled with uncertainties. To help mitigate risks and avoid financial challenges, you can get ahead of the curve by setting up a strong foundation to your business
Here are some ways you can help stabilize your business to help weather tougher markets...
Diversification can involve working with different types of demographics such as Investors, Pre Construction and exploring different geographical locations Many investors will buy in almost any market cycle, time of year and location if the numbers work. They are a good source of consistent movement and can add stability to your business. Preconstruction properties are often in high demand, and by establishing relationships with developers, you can secure a steady flow of clients as well. Working in different areas not only expands your client base, but also allows you to gain a deeper understanding of different markets. This can be advantageous when advising clients, looking for shifting trends and identifying new opportunities.
also essential. This can be achieved by networking with other professionals, attending conferences and seminars, and regularly updating your knowledge through educational resources. Funds should be set aside each year to attend these events, I promise you, what you get out of them is far more valuable than the cost.
Tracking and understanding key metrics will help identify if a shift in activity is starting. While forecasting isn’t guaranteed, it does provide you a general idea of what to expect and plan accordingly.
Staying informed and keeping up with the latest industry news and market trends is
These are only a few of the ways you can help set your business to ride the always changing, always evolving real estate market. By taking these measures, you are setting your business up to prepare to anticipate market shifts and ride the wave of any storms because you will be ready to adjust your strategies and budget accordingly. This will help enable you to better serve your clients and maintain a strong business foundation, especially through seasonal market changes.

AI-based technology has undergone significant advancements in recent years, revolutionizing various industries, including real estate In today's market, time is the currency; time spent behind a desk versus time spent in front of a prospect or client really matters. AI-powered Customer
Relationship Management (CRM) systems have emerged as valuable tools, helping to streamline processes, provide insightful and predictive analytics, and to automate repetitive tasks.
Before delving into its benefits, it's essential to grasp how AI operates within CRM systems. AI algorithms analyze vast datasets, extracting valuable insights to enhance decisionmaking processes and automate repetitive tasks By leveraging existing data, AI streamlines processes, provides predictive analytics, and delivers personalized communication tailored to individual users or clients
Key Benefits of AI-based CRM Systems for Real Estate Professionals
1. Prospecting & Marketing
Crafting tailored marketing content and reaching out to potential leads can be time-consuming, especially if you need to create content that is tailored to a specific audience AI technology simplifies this process by utilizing existing client data to generate personalized emails and marketing materials that resonate with your target audience.
By filling in key fields such as contact information and sales data, AI creates professional content that resonates with your target audience. You can even direct the tone of voice you want to use, such as assertive or playful, ensuring consistency in brand messaging and saving time on content creation.
2. Data Analytics
AI empowers real estate professionals with robust data analytics capabilities. By analyzing large datasets, AI generates custom reports and identifies trends such as home prices and sales volume. For the reports and analytics to be successful, all required fields must be complete and accurate Consistency is key Updating your data on the same day each month is a great way to report on trends on a month-over-month and year-over-year basis. This function provides a snapshot of where your sales are now and a forecast of sales growth in your market.
One of the most practical features of AIbased CRM systems is streamlining repetitive processes through automation. Setting up recurring weekly or monthly tasks or triggering follow-up emails are just a couple of examples of how this feature proves to be extremely useful for busy professionals.
To maximize the benefits of AI in CRM systems, consider the following practical examples on how leveraging AI in CRMS can be useful to your business:
Creating follow-up email templates for prospective or existing clients not only streamlines your brand's messaging but saves you time from crafting an email with each scheduled follow-up.
By implementing recurring tasks, you remove the mental clutter of constantly updating your to-do list. For automation to be successful, some time will need to be spent on the initial set-up and auditing of your database for any duplicate accounts, outdated information, or missing data.
Several CRM systems integrate well with AI technology, including Pipedrive, Nutshell, Salesforce, and HubSpot. These platforms offer user-friendly interfaces and typically offer some great support features. If you ' re curious about diving into AI technology but feel a bit daunted, fear not! These CRM systems are designed to be user-friendly and intuitive. They're like your trusty sidekick, guiding you every step of the way. And if you ever hit a bump in the road, don't sweat it – there are helpful chatbots ready to assist you with any questions or concerns.
Even better, many of these systems offer free trials, allowing you to explore their features and see firsthand how they can supercharge your business. After all, not all CRMs are cut from the same cloth, so it's worth taking the time to find the perfect fit for your unique needs. So, embrace the opportunity to test drive these AI-powered tools and discover the possibilities they hold for your success!

THE PEOPLE WHO ARE CRAZY ENOUGH TO THINK THEY CAN CHANGE THE WORLD ARE THE ONES WHO DO.– Steve Jobs
Family owned and operated” – it’s a badge proudly worn by companies across all industries. While the allure of family-owned businesses is undeniable, the reality is that the dynamics of family relationships, combined with the complexities of running a business can create unique challenges that many are not prepared to navigate. Combine these factors with the uncertainties of the real estate industry, where competition is fierce and market conditions fluctuate regularly, and success can be even harder to achieve.
For aspiring entrepreneurs seeking to build a successful brokerage, there are valuable lessons to be taken from the story of Rob and JoAnn Landry at Royal LePage Burloak Real Estate Services Originally owned by JoAnn Landry and her father, David, and now by JoAnn and her brother, Rob, their journey as co-owners and as siblings not only underscores the importance of collaborative family dynamics but also sheds light on the challenges and opportunities inherent in working alongside family members.
If you are considering partnering with a family member, there are many pros and cons to working with someone you are related to. Here are some of the key benefits or tips learned from the established partnership of JoAnn and Rob.
At the core of Royal LePage Burloak's success lies a set of shared values deeply rooted in family principles. From the outset, JoAnn and Rob have prioritized integrity, honesty, and client-centric service. These values aren’t just buzzwords to them; they have formed the central focus of every decision made and every interaction with clients, agents, and colleagues alike.
By instilling these values into the fabric of their brokerage, the Landrys fostered a culture of trust, collaboration, and reliability Agents and their clients know they can rely on Royal LePage Burloak not just for successful transactions, but for genuine guidance and support throughout their real estate journey.
While Rob and JoAnn have managed Royal LePage Burloak for over 15 years together, a quick comment on this longevity is likely to result in Rob pointing out that their working relationship actually began in the Montreal restaurant industry in their teens. While he intends the story as an amusing anecdote, it was through these shared experiences that they learned the true meaning of teamwork, communication, and resilience – qualities that would later become cornerstones of their success
Creating a solid foundation is integral to the success of any brokerage. This entails defining a clear vision, outlining shared goals, and establishing a framework for effective communication and decision-making JoAnn and Rob's partnership exemplifies the significance of aligning values and leveraging each other's strengths to propel the brokerage forward.
One of the key advantages of a family-run brokerage is the ability to utilize each member's strengths and expertise. As brother and sister, Rob and JoAnn have a unique partnership, complementing each other in ways only siblings can. JoAnn’s previous experience in operations set her up for success in managing the day-to-day affairs of the brokerage with unwavering dedication and precision. Her attention to detail and problem-
solving skills have been instrumental in navigating the complexities of the real estate industry, ensuring smooth operations even in challenging situations.
On the other hand, Rob’s background in banking has ensured smooth company operations and a thorough understanding of the company's finances His financial acumen and innovative thinking have enabled the Brokerage to adapt to market trends and stay ahead of the curve in an ever-evolving industry
Their father’s many years in real estate provided a solid foundation of knowledge and a passion for the industry.
By delineating roles based on individual strengths, Royal LePage Burloak has been able to operate efficiently and effectively. Each family member brought something unique to the table, creating a synergy that has propelled the brokerage forward. JoAnn and Rob's collaborative efforts have resulted in a brokerage culture characterized by teamwork, integrity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. The results of which earned them Royal LePage Canada’s award for National Brokerage of the Year in 2018.
By capitalizing on each other's strengths and fostering a spirit of camaraderie among team members, they have cultivated an environment where everyone feels empowered to contribute their best
Like any business, Royal LePage Burloak has faced its fair share of challenges over its 20+ years of leadership under the Landry’s. Economic downturns, market fluctuations, and industry disruptions tested their resilience. However, their unique familial bond has proved to be their greatest asset during tough times.
While the prospect of working with family members can be met with some unique challenges, it can also be the glue that keeps everything together. Conflicting opinions, differing work styles, and personal dynamics can potentially impede progress if left unaddressed.
However, viewing these challenges as opportunities for growth and learning can pave the way for constructive dialogue and innovative solutions. Instead of crumbling under pressure during challenging times, JoAnn and Rob work together, drawing strength from their shared commitment, recognizing when to adapt their strategies, and innovating where necessary.
In an ever-evolving industry landscape, adaptability and innovation are essential for staying ahead of the curve. JoAnn and Rob's forward-thinking approach, paired with their willingness to embrace new technologies and trends, has enabled Royal LePage Burloak to thrive amidst change. By continuously exploring new strategies, encouraging their employees to innovate, and investing in professional development for their agents and employees, they have positioned the brokerage for sustained growth and success.
Beyond business success, aspiring brokerages have a unique opportunity to make a positive impact in their communities JoAnn and Rob's commitment to philanthropy and community outreach exemplifies the transformative

There persists a common misconception that branding revolves solely around logos and visual aesthetics While these elements are undoubtedly significant, branding is a multifaceted concept that extends far beyond the surface The truth is, brand is so much more than just the visual elements that represent a company A brand encompasses the overall perception and reputation associated with that entity in the minds of its target audience or customers A brand is not just a logo or a catchy tagline; it is the sum total of the experiences, emotions, and associations people have with a particular entity.
Having managed two of the largest real estate brands in Canada and globally, I believe it is critical to build a strong, cohesive brand for your business where you delve beyond the visuals. Rather, your brand should encompass storytelling, brand voice, and the true essence of your company’s identity, YOU.
What is a Brand?
A brand consists of many things: a brand promise, an image and identity, a brand position and a story How they all work together is what is key to making your brand stand out and work effectively to garner awareness where it matters most - with your clients or agents Let’s take a look at some of these key elements
The Foundation: Brand Identity
Brand identity serves as the foundation upon which all other branding elements are built It's more than just a catchy logo or stylish color palette; it's the visual and sensory representation of your brand's personality, values, and mission. Think of it as your brand's unique fingerprint –something instantly recognizable and memorable.
A robust brand identity involves careful consideration of typography, colour, and design elements that resonate with your target audience
It sets the stage for the story you want to tell and the emotions you aim to evoke. For example, there is a whole psychological reasoning behind colours. When choosing a colour to represent your company or business, keep these in mind:
Blue: Trust, security, and professionalism
Green: Health, growth, and nature
Red: Passion, energy, and urgency
Yellow: Happiness, optimism, and warmth
Purple: Luxury, sophistication, and creativity
Orange: Fun, excitement, and affordability.
Black: Elegance, sophistication, and power.
The Heartbeat: Storytelling
Branding isn't just about showing; it's also about telling Your brand's story is a powerful tool for creating emotional connections with your audience It humanizes your brand, making it relatable and authentic As real
estate professionals, your clients are looking to make a connection with a person who they can trust and help them make the right decisions when trying to buy or sell their homes
Effective storytelling goes beyond marketing slogans and quick posts on TikTok It's about narrating your brand's journey, its values, and the impact it seeks to make in the world through a variety of marketing channels using the same, cohesive voice. It invites your audience to be part of your narrative, creating a bond that extends beyond mere real estate transactions.
For example, sharing posts that show you at home with your family, taking your pet for a walk or perhaps taking volunteering at a local charity event exposes a more human side of you and your business
Brand voice is how your brand speaks and communicates with your audience. It's the tone, language, and style you use across all your messaging – from social media posts to how you manage your client’s calls and interactions. A consistent brand voice reinforces your brand's personality and values, making it instantly recognizable, even without visual cues
resonate with your target demographic. It's a crucial aspect of building trust and forging lasting relationships with your audience
Your brand identity is what sets you apart from others in the field. Building a real estate team wasn't part of my original business plan. It wasn't even on my radar initially. After seven fulfilling years as a Broker/Area Manager for two Royal LePage franchises in Ontario, coupled with previous success as a top-producing agent in new home sales and resort real estate, I felt the pull to dive into the world of resale. Returning to my hometown of Kingston, ON, to reconnect with my first passion of working directly with clients was both exhilarating and terrifying The thrill of achieving my clients' goals echoed the adrenaline rush of saving a penalty shot or clinching a win in overtime from my competitive ice hockey and soccer days.
Starting from scratch in 2015, after being away from my hometown for thirteen years and without an existing database, posed a significant challenge. Balancing this with the added responsibilities of parenting a oneyear-old made it even more daunting. Nevertheless, driven by a determination to
succeed, I embraced the journey wholeheartedly and am happy and excited by the success my team has achieved since its launch. Here are some of the strategies and lessons I learned from my journey.
From the outset, I recognized the importance of laying a solid foundation for my team When I hired an unlicensed Admin Coordinator during the first year of the pandemic, it was at a time of uncertainty and instability. However, having established a strong business plan and mitigating risks where I could, I seized the opportunity and started the Furter Real Estate Team. I knew it was critical to create a strong foundation that had a clear vision and were based on a strong set of values that would serve as our guiding principles. Integrity, dedication, and a relentless commitment to serving our clients became our foundation and shaped every decision and action we took.
Recruiting the right talent was crucial to our success. There are hundreds of agents in our market, but not everyone would fit on our team. Beyond mere skills and experience, I sought individuals who shared our vision and values Just as I recognized the potential in our unlicensed Administrative Coordinator, strategic recruitment paved the way for our team's growth and success. We implemented our effective hiring practices, sorted through every application, engaged in discussions with our coach and identified the ideal candidate for every person hired to the team.
I understood the power of mentorship and ongoing training in nurturing the potential of my team members. By investing in their professional development, I empowered them to reach new heights of excellence. The transformation of our Admin Coordinator into a licensed agent exemplifies the impact of mentorship on individual and team success And, as the team leader, I also understand the importance of having the right people to guide and mentor me and help me achieve the goals of the business.
Open communication and collaboration were fundamental to our team's dynamics. I fostered an environment where ideas flowed freely, and feedback was embraced Regular meetings and brainstorming sessions became catalysts for creativity and innovation, driving our collective growth and success.
I prioritized cultivating a positive and inclusive culture within our team. Celebrating achievements, recognizing contributions, and fostering a sense of belonging were paramount. Our team thrived in an environment where every member felt valued and supported, driving our collective success
Cultivating a team where everyone is aligned with the same values and vision encourages a more balanced lifestyle and elevates the level of support for each team member, something that cannot be achieved as an individual agent.
Leading by Example:
As a leader, I understood that my actions set the tone for the entire team. I led by example, demonstrating integrity, professionalism, and unwavering dedication in all aspects of my work. My leadership style inspired my team to strive for excellence, propelling us towards our shared goals
The journey of building a high-performance team has taken time and has had its challenges. There’s been a lot of heavy lifting, late nights, long hours and personal sacrifices along the way. Yet, the satisfaction gained from witnessing our team’s collective growth and impact far outweighs the challenges I encountered throughout this time. Our team is continuing to expand,
with an experienced agent joining us this spring. We are on track for continued growth and development, and happy to know that others are taking notice.
As my once one-year-old daughter approaches the age of ten, involving her in my real estate pursuits has given her invaluable lessons in perseverance, hard work and service. While the path to building a successful real estate team may be full of obstacles, if you have unwavering dedication and a genuine passion for the industry, you will succeed and thrive.
