Nova Scotians navigate climate risks

Nova Scotia home buyers and coastal property owners now have stronger tools to make informed decisions about coastal living. Thanks to new government resources created in collaboration with the Nova Scotia Association of REALTORS® (NSAR).

NSAR partnered with the Department of Environment and Climate Change to create tools for their members, including a checklist for working with coastal properties and an educational video tailored to real estate professionals. These resources ensure REALTORS® can confidently advise clients on the realities of coastal ownership in a changing climate.

The province also has new resources for Nova Scotians, including updated coastal hazard maps, a coastal hazard assessment report, and a practical guide to using natural shoreline protection techniques.

“This collaboration shows the value REALTORS® bring when they work alongside government, not just for the benefit of our industry, but for the communities we serve,” said NSAR Vice-President Cheryl Vickers during an announcement of the resources in April.

With rising sea levels and increased storm activity, these resources help prospective buyers understand long-term risks while empowering current owners to take protective action. This work reinforces NSAR’s commitment to supporting safe, sustainable homeownership and protecting coastal communities for generations to come.
