• Removing the GST on homes under $1 million for first-time home buyers.
• Lowering the GST on homes priced between $1 million and $1.5 million to promote the goal of affordable homeownership.
• Doubling the rate of homebuilding by embracing Canadian technology, lumber, and skilled workers; and
• Cutting development charges in half for all multi-unit housing to increase supply and lower costs.
The government also announced it would create a new industry in modular and prefabricated housing, solutions supported by REALTORS® to help address labour shortages and speed up development timelines.
The speech signalled that the federal government will prioritize faster home construction, reduction of red tape, and investment in infrastructure that supports new housing. Commitments to build thousands more homes, help first-time buyers access financing, and expand affordable housing options show a clear recognition of the housing challenges many Canadians face.
