Our costs are in the region of £1,400 a day. This is a staggering amount which we have to raise to run your local RSPCA animal home.

By donating just £5 per month you are helping us to raise funds for the care of animals in the York and Harrogate district areas.

In return we give you the chance to win your year’s donations each month. This is payable by

standing order on the 1st of each month. If you prefer to pay £60 for 12 months in advance, the cheque should be made payable to RSPCA York, Harrogate & District Branch (Lottery Account).

The draw takes place on the last Sunday of each month at the RSPCA Animal Home, Landing Lane, York Y026 4RH. Winners will receive a cheque by post.

We will send you a standing order mandate for signing and forwarding to your bank.

400g pork fillet 4 tbsp light muscovado sugar 60ml cider vinegar 1 tsp fish sauce ½ small pineapple, peeled, cored and cut into chunks 1 green pepper, deseeded and cut into squares (optional) 4 spring onions , trimmed and cut into 4 equal lengths small bunch coriander, chopped (optional) cooked rice or pitta, to serve

1. Cut the pork into cubes. Heat the sugar and vinegar in a pan over a low heat until the sugar melts. Add the fish sauce and cool. Tip in the pork and mix well so that all the cubes are covered in sauce.

2. Heat the barbecue. If you are indoors, heat a griddle pan. Thread the pork and pineapple onto skewers, alternating pieces with the pepper and spring onion.

3. Barbecue or griddle the skewers for 3-4 mins each side (you may need to cook them for longer if griddling).

4. Sprinkle with coriander, if you like, then serve with rice or slide into pitta breads.

Barbecued Corn on the Cob

An easy method for barbecued corn on the cob. Upgrade this classic barbecue staple with a simple, brush-on chilli butter flavouring 100g butter, at room temperature 1 tbsp runny honey 1 tbsp tomato ketchup 2 fat garlic cloves, crushed 2 tbsp harissa 6 corn cobs

1. Mash together the butter, honey, ketchup, garlic and some seasoning, beating until quite smooth. At this point, if you are also cooking for children, split the mix into two serving bowls, before stirring the harissa into just one bowl.

Add a pastry brush to each butter mix.

2. Wrap each corn cob in a double layer of foil. Barbecue, turning, for 30-35 mins until tender and a little charred.

3. If you want them more blackened, simply unwrap and throw directly on the barbecue for a few more mins.

4. Pile onto plates and let everyone butter their own!
