OVER THE BACK FENCE

This weekend, families will pull out all the stops to celebrate Mother’s Day. That one day a year set aside to recognize the contributions of one of the most important women in our lives. My Mom has been gone now for almost 12 years, and not a day goes by when I don’t look heavenward and ask for her advice. I look in the mirror and see her face staring back at me and sometimes, I hear her words coming out of my mouth. Funny how that happens! She taught me to be independent, strong and resilient. She got knocked down a lot throughout her life but she always found her feet and carried on. She was the glue that held our family together for many years while my Dad chased his dreams around the world. I was blessed to have her in my life and

will stand quietly outside on Sunday to thank her for being my Mom. Stepping into today, in this age of diversity and inclusion, the concept of Mother’s Day (or for that matter, Father’s Day) is going through an evolution. It’s important that we talk about all kinds of families because not everyone has one mom and one dad. Today’s blended families, LGBTQ+ families and families led by one parent or caregiver should also be included in the celebrations for Mom. While a “Mother” by definition is a “woman in relation to her child or children,” the authority figure and, far more importantly, role model of a Mother is what deserves to be celebrated. No matter how you celebrate -- dinner out, flowers, a nice walk through the woods, checking out the local market or just listening to stories -- hug this person close to you. It’s never the same when you’re without them. Stay safe and remember, above all, be kind. editor@thepromoter.ca

ELMSLIE JUMPS INTO MAYORAL RACE Councillor Doug Elmslie has announced his candidacy for Mayor of the City of Kawartha Lakes. He says, “The intention of my campaign is to improve the services that comprise our Public Services. The key areas of concern are: waste management, roads and infrastructure, and the landfill crisis. It is also time that we prioritize the completion of our secondary plans, so that our housing targets can be achieved. We will continue the downtown improvements in our urban areas, and while focusing on these issues, we will also strengthen our collaboration with our citizen and volunteer groups to help them achieve their goals.” Now Councillor for Ward 3, Elmslie represented residents of Ward 6 for 16 years. He moved to Kawartha Lakes in 2001 and was first elected to council in 2006.

COMMUNITY PARAMEDIC PROGRAM CONTINUES

With the support of the Ontario government, more Kawartha Lakes seniors are being supported to stay safely in their homes while awaiting Long Term Care. Since 2019, Kawartha Lakes has been providing care to seniors through the Community Paramedic Program. Beginning with one Paramedic in 2019, today there are four full time Community Paramedics and plans are in place to increase that number to eight within two years. In early 2022, Kawartha Lakes

received confirmation of $5 million over the next three years to expand the program with fleet, equipment and staffing. The program is funded entirely by the Province and operated by Kawartha Lakes Paramedic Service. The program is based out of the former Oakwood Fire Station and services all of Kawartha Lakes. Sara Johnston, Deputy Chief, Professional Standards, commented, “This program is unique because it allows us to wrap services around the patient. We’re currently serving an average of 160 patients a week, from Coboconk to Omemee and all points throughout the municipality. We work closely with partners in primary care, home care and Community Care to provide a safety net for patients.” Johnston extended appreciation to members of Kawartha Lakes Council, noting they were strong believers in the program since 2019 and provided bridge funding until permanent provincial funding was announced in the fall of 2021. “After decades of neglect, our government has and is continuing to take action to fix Ontario’s long-term care sector,” said Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. “The expansion of the Community Paramedicine for Long Term Care program to Kawartha Lakes will support our local seniors by providing them high-quality care when and where they need in their own homes, while they wait for a bed in Long Term Care.” The program works alongside primary, home and community care to provide the following services to eligible seniors: • Access to health services 24-7, through in-home and remote methods, such as online supports • Non-emergency home visits and in-home testing procedures • Ongoing monitoring of vital signs to prevent escalation of chronic medical conditions: assessments, referrals, diagnostic procedures and point-of care testing. “We’ve seen the unquestionable value that Community Paramedics provide in the few short years the program has been in place. Our seniors, their families and caregivers have the peace of mind they deserve while potentially delaying the need for LongTerm Care,” said Randy Mellow, CMM III - EMS Exec/ EMP Chief of Paramedics, City of Kawartha Lakes.

PROVINCE INVESTS IN OMEMEE ROADS

The Ontario government is investing up to $3 million to help the City of Kawartha Lakes in the reconstruction and resurfacing of King Street in Omemee. The funding is being delivered through the Connecting Links program and is part of the government’s plan to build Ontario by getting shovels in the ground on roads and bridges that support the movement of goods, connect people to jobs and spur economic growth. “This funding is great news for the community and businesses in Omemee and will provide much needed improvements to local transportation and the streetscape downtown to keep people and goods moving,” said Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-

Kawartha Lakes-Brock. This year, the government will provide $30 million to support 16 Connecting Links projects across the province. The funding covers up to 90 per cent of eligible project costs up to a maximum of $3 million for road projects and up to $5 million for bridge projects. “Today’s announcement is exciting as it continues the momentum we’ve built around our downtowns. From Lindsay to Fenelon Falls and now Omemee, we’re making our community hubs more accessible and enjoyable to visit. We couldn’t have moved ahead in Omemee without the generous support of the Province and our local MPP, Laurie Scott,” said Mayor Letham. “This project means a lot to the people of Omemee. It will make walking, driving and parking along the Main Street easier and safer. It will also make it more enticing for those who pass through on Highway 7 to stop, stay a while and support our local businesses. I’m thrilled that the Province has assisted Council to move forward with the project,” said Ron Ashmore, Councillor, Ward 6.

SCHOOL BOARD LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE

Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) has launched a new Board website and is inviting visitors to explore it. In June of 2021, the TLDSB community was asked to provide feedback on the Board website, as well as their school websites. With approximately 2,000 respondents, valuable feedback was provided, which was beneficial in the redesign of the new website. “We are pleased to have launched a site that reflects the input from the communities we serve to provide a more accessible, engaging, modern site,” says Director of Education, Wes Hahn. Created with the user in mind, the new site features: • Built-in accessibility – look for the blue accessibility circle in the bottom left-hand corner of any page on the site to access the accessibility tool that will make any required adjustments based on the accessibility profile of the user. • Find it Fast – found in the top navigation area of the site, this area is where the most commonly visited pages are displayed for quick “find it fast” access. • Calendar – a new calendar that includes TLDSB events, days of significance, professional activity days, statutory holidays, and more. • Board Directory – this directory provides an interactive map and filters to search by a location, program, and/or school name. • Translation – found in the top navigation area of the site, this button allows users to translate the site into 108 different languages. • Responsive design – the fully responsive site optimizes content for the screen size that the visitor is using.

Superintendent of Learning, Paul Goldring, said, “Many members of our community commented on the navigation being one of the most important elements of the redesign and so it was imperative that we created a site that was easy to navigate.” TLDSB encourages visitors to explore the site and welcomes feedback from its communities and the public by completing the Website Feedback Form when they visit the site at www.tldsb.ca. New school websites will be launched in the 2022/2023 school year.

MUSEUM ACQUIRES RECORDS

Kawartha Lakes Museum & Archives has acquired the records from The Thursday Club of Fenelon Falls. The collection of records consists of the programs of the Club dating back to their first meeting in April of 1931. Photographs, as well as their minute books from every meeting, detail the evolution of the Fenelon Falls women’s only book club. “We are so excited to form this partnership with The Thursday Club of Fenelon Falls to preserve this important part of Kawartha Lakes history,” says Zac Miller, archivist at Kawartha Lakes Museum & Archives. Marking the Club’s 91st anniversary this year, shifting through the many programs and minutes, one can see the names of women who have been underrepresented in the history books and institutional archives around Kawartha Lakes. Names including Helena and Nyhl Graham, Peggy Long, and Mary McLaughlin appear often throughout the records. “Our records have been passed from one executive to the next, and stored under someone’s bed, or in a closet,” said Ginny Colling, current secretary for the Club. “We really thought it was time to find them a more permanent home where they could be safely preserved and more easily shared. We’re grateful that KLMA could be that home. With our archives preserved and digitized through the museum, they will be much more easily shared, not just with our members, but with the community at large and we can feel confident that they will remain intact for the next 91 years.” Kawartha Lakes Museum & Archives encourages other community organizations or individuals to preserve their records with KLMA to share with the public a history that is of Kawartha Lakes, not simply about Kawartha Lakes. For inquiries, you can contact Zac Miller at zmiller@klmuseumarchives.ca.

PINECREST TO ADD BEDS

The Ontario government is building 63 new and 65 upgraded beds at Pinecrest Nursing Home in Bobcaygeon. This is part of the government’s $6.4 billion commitment to build more than 30,000 net new beds by 2028 and 28,000 upgraded long-term care beds across the province. This brings the total of new long-term care beds in development or under construction to 300 and the total of upgraded long-term care beds to 436 for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock under our government’s commitment. This investment in Pinecrest Nursing Home is part of the provincial government’s plan to fix longterm care. Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock, said, “We saw how remarkable the local healthcare staff were at Pinecrest during the pandemic and this funding is another part of our plan to improve staffing and care, accountability, enforcement, and transparency by building modern, safe, comfortable homes for seniors.” “Our government has a plan to fix long-term care and a key part of that plan is building modern, safe, and comfortable homes for our seniors,” said Paul Calandra, Minister of Long-Term Care. “When the construction at this home is complete, it will be a place for local seniors to call home, near their family and friends.”

help people upgrade their skills and get connected with good, local jobs that are in-demand now and in the future.” The City of Kawartha Lakes, Trent University and PKED have been awarded $822,392 from the Skills Development Fund for a new Community Concierge project. This innovative project strives to ensure a resilient workforce by supporting the entry of recent graduates into the labour market, and supporting local and rural employers to fill skilled job vacancies. “This coordinated effort between government and education is a great thing for students in Kawartha Lakes,” said Andy Letham, Mayor of the City if Kawartha Lakes. “It will help us strengthen our local workforce and help graduates build their careers right in their own community. It gives a boost to workers looking to upskill in the agriculture and forestry sectors, which are among our strongest sectors.” The 12-month Community Concierge project will create new staff positions to lead to the creation of 60 multi-year partnership agreements between Trent University and local employers, leading to employment opportunities for 100 recent graduates. A portion of this funding will allow the University to provide training subsidies and support to eligible job seekers to support their involvement during training and upskilling opportunities and the transition to rural employment. Partnership agreements will also address future work integrated learning placements for emerging graduates to better transition them to full-time employment in the region upon graduation. Fleming College has utilized this funding for two projects that are up and running including the procurement of simulators for the heavy equipment, forestry, public works and agricultural sectors as well as the creation of micro-credentials for agriculture and forestry.

JOB TRAINING SUPPORTED BY PROVINCE

The Ontario government is working for workers by investing $1,607,925 in three local projects that will be delivered by Fleming College and Trent University through The City of Kawartha Lakes. These projects will offer local workers and job seekers with the training they need to pursue the in-demand and well-paying jobs within our community. “This is incredible news for local jobs seekers and employers in Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough County,” said Laurie Scott, MPP for HaliburtonKawartha Lakes-Brock. “These three local programs delivered by Fleming College and Trent University will 6

LINDSAY MANUFACTURER GETS BOOST

The Ontario government is supporting an investment of $5,067,300 by TS Manufacturing with $750,000 from the new Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation Competitiveness (AMIC) stream of the Regional Development Program. Through this project, TS Manufacturing will support local advanced manufacturing, invest in new equipment and create 10

new jobs, upskill 15 jobs and retain 106 jobs. “Our government is committed to ensuring Ontario is open for business and open for jobs,” said Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha LakesBrock. “This funding will help TS Manufacturing invest in the local talent and equipment they need to thrive and be global leaders in innovation.” TS Manufacturing designs, manufactures, and installs production systems for the sawmill and mining industries globally. “We are making a $5 million investment in advanced manufacturing equipment and supporting infrastructure to enable us to increase productivity, capacity and manufacturing flexibility so that we can offer our automated solutions to smaller and medium sized customers,” said Ev Smith - Owner. “We are pleased to have the Province’s support on this project with funding from the AMIC program.”

LITTER PICKUP PROJECT

The Kawartha Lakes chapter of 100 Kids Who Care kicked off a 2-week campaign on Earth Day to rally 100 kids to clean up litter in Kawartha Lakes. Children were encouraged to pick up litter on their own, or join a group cleanup project. 100 Kids Who Care Kawartha Lakes is an organization for school-age (Kindergarten-Grade 12) kids in the Kawartha Lakes. Before the pandemic, the organization held meetings three times per year to allow kids to vote on and donate to local charities they believed in. “We knew it wasn’t an ideal time to bring back our in-person meetings, however we wanted to find a way to keep the momentum going with youth in Kawartha Lakes, so we came up with the idea to do a 2-week litter pick-up campaign” says Jill Zigomanis, one of the parent organizers of 100 Kids Who Care Kawartha Lakes. “This project is both impactful and communitybased, which are two key reasons why our young members choose to be part of our organization.” 100 Kids Who Care Kawartha Lakes is a local organization that gives children the opportunity to learn about their community, empowers them to become advocates for organizations and issues that matter to them, learn the importance of giving back and how they can use their time, treasure and talent to make a difference, and see the impact they can have right here at home in the City of Kawartha Lakes. ONTARIO CONTRIBUTES TO RMH

Ross Memorial Hospital is receiving an additional $1.9 million in operating funding from the Ontario government, representing a 2.4 percent increase over last year. In addition, as part of its plan to stay open, the Ontario government is investing $2,628,000 to add 12 patient beds to Ross Memorial Hospital. These new beds are part of a capital plan expansion with more than 50 major projects that will add 3,000 new beds over 10 years and support the continuation of over 3,100 acute and post-acute beds in hospitals and alternate health care facilities, and hundreds of new adult, paediatric and neonatal critical care beds. Since the outset of the pandemic, the government has added 777 more intensive-care unit hospital beds with

the capacity to now handle 2,448 critical care patients. The increased annual investment is part of the Ontario government’s $827 million additional investment to hospitals across the province, representing a four per cent increase from last year. This will ensure all publicly funded hospitals receive a minimum two per cent increase to their operating budgets to help them better meet patient needs, while building a stronger, more resilient health care system. “This additional investment and annual commitment for 12 patient beds is fantastic news for community members here in Kawartha Lakes,” said Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha LakesBrock. “Ross Memorial Hospital has gone above and beyond to support patients and families during the pandemic and this funding will help address increased pressure on the healthcare system and help more local residents get the care they need, when they need it.” “Ross Memorial Hospital is extremely grateful for the Ministry of Health’s investment into patient care at our hospital,” said Kelly Isfan, President and CEO of Ross Memorial Hospital. “The increase in operational funding will help the hospital address infrastructure needs and support our team of dedicated health care professionals. Our 12 new patient beds increase the hospital’s capacity to be flexible and ensure the delivery of exceptional care to members of our community.”

SUPPORT RMH’S NEW MRI

There are moments from Kate Winn’s breast cancer experience that she will never forget. Thanks to the exceptional care she received at the Ross Memorial Hospital, including an MRI to guide her surgery, Kate is cancer free. “As a teacher, I know that the best stories are the ones with the most colourful detail. As a cancer survivor, I have no doubt: the more details our doctors have, the better our stories end,” said Kate Winn. “With cancer behind me, I can picture a healthier future ahead. And by donating funds for the community’s new MRI, we can all make sure our community hospital continues to offer the best care possible.” MRI was among the technology that helped to

pinpoint Kate’s tumour and ensure there were no others. When Kate learned that the community’s aging MRI must be replaced and that government funding doesn’t cover the cost, she wanted to help fundraise the $2.5 million cost of the MRI and encourage others to give, too. Kate’s experience is featured in the “Every Picture Tells A Story” spring appeal letter, which is being mailed throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes. The letter includes an expert testimonial from Dr. Mario Voros, Ross Memorial’s Chief of Radiology. “I want to thank the donors who keep the Ross at the forefront of exceptional care with support for essential acquisitions like our community’s MRI,” said Dr. Voros. “Better imaging helps us detect problems earlier, treat patients sooner, and improve your outcomes. Your support for MRI has a far-reaching impact.” Magnetic Resonance Imaging helps physicians confidently diagnose disease and injury in the brain,

spine, joints, breasts and organs. It’s a vital tool for detecting herniated or bulging disks, arthritic changes, and cancer. More than 500 patient exams are scanned at the Ross every month. “It’s been just over a decade that local donors funded our community’s MRI, changing the nature of patient care at the Ross, and reducing the need for patients to travel to other areas for imaging. That might not feel like a long time, but it’s already impossible to imagine our hospital care without access to MRI technology,” said Ryan O’Neill, RMH Foundation Board Chair. “By giving together, we can ensure our hospital has vital equipment it needs, not otherwise funded by the government.” For more information or to make an online donation, please visit the RMH Foundation’s website, www.rmh.org/foundation.

HEALTH UNITS ASK FOR MORE MASKING

Dr. Thomas Piggott from Peterborough Public Health has united with two other Ontario public health agencies to send a letter to Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health sharing concern with continued high disease activity, for a temporary province-wide masking mandate to bring down sixth wave transmission. Dr. Piggott said, “COVID-19 risk continues, and masking remains a key strategy to protect yourself and others.” Meanwhile, Peterborough Public Health has launched a new dashboard, the Peterborough Region COVID-19 Tracker. This interactive dashboard will merge the COVID-19 Community Risk Index and the previous case and status data from the COVID-19 tracker. Dr. Piggott reminds residents that it is still very important to follow the Risk Index recommendations. “Transmission in our community has moved to the high level. While this is hopeful that we are seeing

transmission start to slow down, we are still seeing high rates of transmission in the ongoing pandemic and precautions continue to be critical.”
