Progress! Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange

As we begin this new fiscal year, let us take the opportunity to commend our citizens, our City Council, our managers and our employees for the amazing progress we have made, even in the face of declining spending. In the previous fiscal year, our overall expenditures were less than budgeted by about $5 million, enabling us to shore up Internal Service funds, fill funding gaps for MATS and add to critical reserves. In spite of decreased expenditures, substantial progress was made in maintaining and improving services for our citizens and visitors alike. This year, we’ll tighten our belts again, and we’ll continue to flourish economically, socially and culturally. From the boom in travel and tourism in America’s Best Historic City to the ongoing explosion in retail and residential developments, we are making strides for the future. Investments in our athletic infrastructure continue paying dividends as we are now one of the premier cities in the Southeast for sporting events, like the ESPN Raycom Camellia Bowl this December. We’ll also host the MLB Futures Southern League All-Star game next year – earlier than scheduled – and the World Horseshoe Tournament in 2016. Thanks to the impact of these and numerous other events, we continue leading the state in increased lodging occupancy rates. Our community continues thriving in a time when many cities have experience setbacks. Fewer than five months ago, we celebrated the first day of operation for the most technologically advanced solid waste recycling facility in the nation, which has put Montgomery on the list of premier green cities in the U.S. Commercial retailers are following the residential boom, as stores like Gander Mountain and Whole Foods invest in Montgomery. Likewise, our corporate citizens are also confident in Montgomery’s future, which is why Montgomery’s Business Confidence Index has led the state in 12 of the last 16 quarters. Even as we tighten the budget, we will continue taking care of our hardworking employees. The FY 2015 budget includes a $1.9 million market adjustment to our compensation structure to ensure our employees pay is in line with that of similar cities. In addition, the budget provides for the use of the operational resources needed for the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Selma to Montgomery March and the 60th Anniversary of the Bus Boycott, as we ready Montgomery for the thousands of visitors to these events. In closing, we are grateful for the contributions of citizens, community leaders, businesses and employees who walk with us as we bring our vision for Montgomery’s future to fruition. Although the effects can be felt right now, we are even more excited about the coming years! -Mayor Todd Strange 4

On The Cover

When Supercuts first opened doors in July, customers would continually ask, “So what exactly is it that you do?” In the majority of the country, Supercuts is a household name, synonymous with quality and affordable haircare for the whole family. But in Montgomery and Millbrook, we were forging new ground when we introduced the national brand to the area. Our mission was simple from the beginning. With every customer who walked in, we set out to establish ourselves as unique. Not only have we set the brand standard for the highest quality in family haircare, but we are first and foremost a local salon, filled with the very best stylists from the area. In fact, Supercuts has set the bar for having the best trained stylists, locally and nationally. Already Alabama licensed and educated hair stylists, every one of our stylists went through additional rigorous Supercuts stylist training just to be a Supercuts stylist. They love to talk about their rite of passage, so to speak, called Supercuts Hairstylist Academy. During that week, our staff of stylists truly became a team.

Cheri Smartt, Supercuts area store manager and a professional Paul Mitchell trainer and master colorist, said, “I have worked at several salons and have even owned my own, but I have never seen a team come together like I’ve seen at these two salons. It’s as if both salons have been here for years.” That’s the way our customers feel as well. Dottie Younge, local mother of three, said, “My husband first dropped by the store on Zelda Rd for a haircut. He was so impressed with the quality, friendliness and customer service that now all five of us are customers. I just had my hair cut and colored and I was amazed! It was like being in a full service, expensive salon but without those ridiculous prices. And my hair looks amazing!”

Meet the Stylists in our First Annual Supercuts Octoberfest! Giveaways and Prizes all Month! In October, the stores are inviting everyone to come meet the stylists in a month long Supercuts style Octoberfest. All month, every customer can play Spin the Wheel for a chance to win prizes. All kids receive a free toy with every haircut all month. Anyone who brings in a product from a grocery store can trade it in for 15% off one of our professional products. Plus, everyone gets entered to win in a raffle for a gift basket.   Giving Back to the Community With Charity Donations And most importantly, Supercuts is partnering with Easter Seals Central Alabama. We will donate a portion of sales from both stores to Easter Seals of Central Alabama. Every haircut or product purchase will directly benefit the local chapter, which helps folks with disabilities gain greater independence. Drop by your local Supercuts for haircuts for the whole family, color or highlighting ($5 off all color this month), facial waxing, shampoos, deep conditioning, blow outs, flat irons and our patented men’s color camo, which turns salt and pepper hair into pepper and salt. Stores are located in the Publix Shopping Center on Zelda Rd and in the Winn Dixie Shopping Center in Millbrook.

Jeff Breland -Author of Ghost Train-

By George Singleton He's called Montgomery home for the last 22 years; he's originally from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Jeff started writing novels about 7 years ago. When he was younger, he enjoyed writing short stories. He has written 5 novels so far, including his most recent work, Ghost Train. His latest novel was inspired by his wife's hometown in Louisiana which there was an infirmary where an old doctor once practiced. Ghost Train is a book that takes readers on a journey through the life of voodooist Marie Laveau. The Story and thereby the book is set in the 19th century, which in itself offers a wonderful backdrop and dynamic to the story that is further enhanced by the author's mastery over story telling techniques. In fact, it uses visual imagery so vividly that readers are boud to be mesmerized instantly.

The Pride of Montgomery

Excerpt from Ghost Train "The girls elected to enter the cemetery off Conti Street. Waiting until darkness, a hazy fog had begun to drift over the graveyard. Overhead, through the smoky mass, was a full moon. Not only was it full, but it also had a yellowish hue. At times it was hard to discern with the shifting mass of low clouds. Not a time or place for the faint at heart. The fact that this graveyard sat in the middle of a bustling metropolitan area didn't make it any less frightening. Had either of the girls known or cared anything about directions, they might have been aware that the facility sat in a southwest to northeast angle. They didn't. They only knew which bus would take them nearby and how to find it from where they had to walk. " "On the northwest side of the cemetery was N. Claiborne Street. One could possibly have heard cars traveling on that through-fare if not for the constant stream of white noise created by the never-ending flow of traffic on Interstate 10, which was just on the other side of Claiborne. The southwest end was bordered by N. Robertson. On all these streets, traffic was still moving. In fact, the cemetery, bordered by st. Louis and Iberville Streets on either end, was bisected by Conti and Bienville Streets to form three separate sections. Back in the day when Marie's ancestor was interred here, most of these smaller streets likely didn't exist. If they did, they were mere dirt trails or paths. Adjacent to the cemetery was a public housing project. Most of the inhabitants here were even poorer than those in the row houses of the girls' neighborhood. It was definitely a more crime ridden area. The mothers of all three would have had a conniption had they known where their teenagers were at this moment."

At one time, Landmarks Foundation was one of the most recognizable organizations in Montgomery. Somewhere between its inception and today, the organization has been pushed aside and the name Old Alabama Town is better known. But how many people understand that these are actually two different organizations and Landmarks is the organization which began and runs Old Alabama Town? How many people realize the number of buildings Landmarks Foundation, not Old Alabama Town, has been responsible for saving? Probably not very many, if I had to guess. As it has been said, “somewhere along the way the child swallowed the parent.” Landmarks Foundation of Montgomery began in 1967-1968 at the request of the City Attorney for the purposes of “fostering, encouraging, and leading the preservation movement in the city.” In other words, Landmarks was into renovating buildings before it became the “in” thing to do. Today there is much going on downtown with the development of the Riverfront and buildings being purchased in earnest to be turned into commercial and residential use; however, would this momentum be the same if Landmarks Foundation had never been formed, restored so many structures, and created Old Alabama Town? Maybe and maybe not, but that is a conversation for another day. The point is, Landmarks Foundation has been at the core of downtown preservation and restoration since before many of those involved in today’s restoration effort were born. A few of the more recognizable buildings Landmarks has helped restore, other than Old Alabama Town, are the following: the Train shed, the Confederate Post Office (Washington and Perry Streets), Knox

b y G e o f f S to u g h

Hall (419 South Perry), the House of Mayors (532 South Perry), the Greil Mansion (Lawrence and Scott Streets), and the Carnegie Library (South Perry). These are just a few examples of the influence Landmarks has had over the years. In 1968 Landmarks purchased the OrdemanShaw complex from Miss Maude Shaw. That purchase helped launch what has become Old Alabama Town which includes the rescue and restoration of more than fifty buildings, spanning more than six city blocks. As part of the initial and subsequent agreements with the city, Landmarks Foundation acts as the governing arm for Old Alabama Town. Over time, Old Alabama Town has taken the forefront and people have forgotten it was Landmarks Foundation who brought Old Alabama Town into being. Did you know Landmarks rents buildings to businesses? How unique would it be to be able to welcome your clients into a historically significant building with more character than anything new? In order to keep the preservation movement going, Landmarks Foundation needs your support. By becoming a member of Landmarks, you are becoming a part of restoring downtown, at a very minimal cost. Currently, the largest project managed by Landmarks is Old Alabama Town; however, Landmarks Foundation is not out of the restoration movement. A tour of the new downtown lofts was recently held in conjunction with Landmarks Foundation and Foshee Management, who has done a wonderful job of creating new lofts. Landmarks Foundation is still at the forefront of the preservation movement and I encourage individuals and businesses to help fund this very significant organization.

Candy Season... By Dr. Frank Rho It’s that time of year again. Yellow leaves, cooler nights and little kids (and adult kids) running around door to door trading non trickery for a sweet treat. Afterwards, there’s the loot. Big buckets of CANDY!!! Sweet, chewy, crunchy, gooey. The American Dental Association recoils in shock and terror. Hygienists everywhere are gnashing their teeth, while dentists scream in horror, running around in circles pulling clumps of hair out of their own heads. Last Halloween, I wrote about some of the effects of candy beyond just the sugar and how to negotiate around it so that your kids can enjoy their sweets.

This year I got out the resources to find a topic about Halloween and your teeth. They all say the same thing… Don’t eat candy. How incredibly boring is that?? Ideally it sounds perfect, but in the real world, who doesn’t eat candy every once in a while? I eat candy. All the dentists I know eat candy. My hygienists eat candy. My assistants eat candy. My dog LOVES candy. EVERYONE eats candy. Then Halloween comes and your kids (and you, admit it) look at that candy with big wide happy anticipating eyes and drooling mouths. I’m going to make a guess that nobody who is in the tenacious grip of a late night sugar craving will look at that candy and say to themselves “The American Dental Association suggests that I don’t eat candy”, then put the plastic pumpkin basket full of treats back on the shelf and eat a celery stick.

My message to you this year is the same. Happy Halloween. Eat your candy. Enjoy the candy. Just don’t graze on the candy all day. Give your kids a half hour each day and let them go crazy with it for that half hour. After they’re finished, have them brush and floss their teeth. Sugar, by itself, doesn’t cause cavities. But the bacteria that causes cavities loves sugar. When it gets a lot of it, it multiplies and, like anything that is living, has waste products. Poop. Bacterial poop is extremely acidic, which lowers the pH levels in your mouth, and, like battery acid, starts to eat away at the enamel on your teeth. So bacterial poop, not sugar, actually directly causes cavities. Our saliva naturally neutralizes the acid to a healthy level. After you eat something sweet, your acidity level spikes and the bacteria proliferates. Your saliva will neutralize the acidity in your mouth in about 20 minutes. If you eat your Halloween candy a little at a time, all through the day, your saliva does not get a chance to neutralize the acidity and your teeth are actively being attacked in the acid bath all day. However, on a special occasion, like Halloween, if your kids go crazy on candy for a half hour a day, their acidity level will spike, but then neutralize 20 minutes after your kids are done. A great compromise that allows your kids to enjoy the spoils of their labor and still be kinder to their teeth.

I hope you all have a wonderful fall and a Happy Halloween. DR. RHO KNOWS... GUMS & TEETH

The Disciplined Dreamer: Finding Your Place By Tasha M. Scott, Personal Development Coach What must Eve have felt like when she heard God’s voice in the Garden of Eden, asking her “Where Are You?” The regret, grief, and desperation that come after a mistake are part of life, and just as Eve was granted a reprieve and given another chance at life, so are we. Mistakes do not define our lives, rather they grant us the opportunity to discern and define our purpose in life. Becoming a disciplined dreamer requires that we understand that there is life in the garden, as well as in the desert, and that we must acknowledge God is our source of strength, work past our mistakes, and pursue our God-given dream. Every aspect of life prepares you to be the container of your God-given dream; a dream that can only come through YOU. You are the perfect, imperfect woman (or man) for the purpose. How many times have you talked yourself out of pursuing a dream, filling your mind with doubts, excuses, and apologies for perceived inadequacies? How many times have you asked yourself “Where is God?” To become a disciplined dreamer and succeed, you must ask yourself “Where am I?” and “Where do I want to be?” as God is ever-present in good times and bad. You must accept that God made you for a reason, chose you for a reason. It is up to you to move past the pain and fear and reach the Unlimited life that is yours for the taking. What Your Eyes Reveal About Your Health

It's been said that the eyes are the window to the soul. While the saying has more of a spiritual context, it carries weight when your doctor looks into your eyes. The eye reflects what is happening in the body. In other words, eye problems are usually manifestations of systemic problems. Thanks to clues the eye provides, eye doctors can be the first ones to detect medical conditions and refer patients to specialists for further evaluation. This often leads to life-saving treatment. Eye doctors regularly alert patients to potentially dangerous auto-immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, lupus and type I diabetes. Because the body's organs and systems are interconnected, eye problems can be the first sign of a vascular, nerve or immune problem. The pupil of the eye is an open window allowing a unique glimpse into the body. Blood vessels, nerves and tissue can be viewed directly through the pupil, with specialized instruments, to reveal remarkable data about the body. Swollen eye muscles and bulging eyes can be a sign of hyperthyroidism. Optic nerve inflammation in an otherwise healthy person can indicate multiple sclerosis. Retinal hemorrhages can signal a myriad of diseases, with diabetes being the most common. Diabetic eye disease is one of the leading causes of blindness and can be diagnosed and treated, as long as the patient is seen and returns for timely care. 18

The Pride of Montgomery

b y D r. Fre d r i c k J a c k s o n

The eyes can help predict risk of stroke, which is particularly important to people with heart disease and diabetes. This is because blood clots in the arteries of the head and neck that might lead to stroke are often visible as retinal emboli in the small blood vessels of the eye. The patient can then be seen by a vascular surgeon for appropriate treatment. Brain tumors are another serious disorder that can be found with an eye test called the visual field analysis, which is a ten-minute, non-invasive test. The bottom line is when something changes about your vision, it's best to get it checked to determine if any serious problem has caused the symptom. Children and adults should have their eyes examined at least every two years, and if they have health problems, they should have this check up annually. For answers about eye-related questions, call Dr. Fredrick Jackson at 334-271-3900. Primary Eyecare Associates is located at 8436 Vaughn Road in Montgomery.

Dr. Fredrick Jackson received his undergraduate degree from Huntingdon College, and earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of AL-Birmingham 1984. He has practiced in the Montgomery area for over 27 years and his areas of specialty includes treatment of dry eye syndrome and nutritional eye care, and management of refractive surgery patients.

Dr. Rachelle Janush, D.O. Dr. Rachelle Janush, D.O. is the proprietor and the neuro muscle skeletal pain specialist of The Center for Physical Medicine & Pain Management. She was recruited to Montgomery in 1996 from The University of Texas-San Antonio for her expertise as an outpatient pain management physician in physical medicine and rehabilitation. At that time, she was the only one in her specialty for outpatient pain management from south of Birmingham to Mobile. Currently, she is still the only clinical physiatrist in the area performing multidisciplinary pain care. Dr. Janush frequently tells her patients that, "I am a Southerner by choice," since she grew up in Michigan and had elected to establish her practice and family here in The River Region. Dr. Janush has been a physician for over 22 years. She still has her zest because she is truly doing what she loves. Since the 3rd grade, she knew that she wanted to be a doctor. Her parents told her that she could be anything she wanted to be, and she felt her calling to be one to save lives by becoming a physician. Dr. Janush could have held a career at large corporations or in major metropolitan cities. Instead, she decided to bring her expertise to Montgomery to assist a population that needed her particular capabilities. Dr. Janush enjoys a well-run, efficient and pleasant office. Her husband, Henry Hernandez, had been essential to establishing the foundation of her practice. The clinical evaluation and interaction with her patients still enthralls her. Correctly diagnosing, treating patients without surgery, and restoring them to as functional of a life as possible, is critical to her work. Getting to know her patients and their life stories facinates her daily. Her offices have recently moved to their newest location at 2227 Taylor Road, Montgomery. In the new facility, Dr. Janush offers several methods including nonsurgical back and neck pain treatments, state of the art ultrasound guided pain procedure injections that do not expose any radiation to the patient, migraine neurological assessment and treatment, and much more. Dr. Janush ensures that her patients are fully diagnosed, analyzed, and treated through compassionate care in the treatment of chronic pain.

JT & Leanne - Fall & Football & Diamond Studded eyeglasses! Whether you're screaming "Roll Tide", "War Eagle" or something completely different, you've got to be excited about the start of the SEC Football Season! Leanne & I are a divided household (Leanne is Auburn, JT is Alabama) and we each try and recruit the girls and even the doggies to our side throughout the season. I think I have an Alabama fan in Bam-Bam (oldest of the crew) & Ashlee and Beccah - although they seem to change based on who is winning each season! Kimberlee I do believe is Auburn (like her mom). One thing our family can all agree on is the fact that the absolute best in eye care is available exclusively at Montgomery Lasik & Eye Care Center in Montgomery! We recently featured Dr. Michael Mull on the River Region TV Show to discuss his affiliation with one of his favorite teams, the Miami Dolphins! Dr. Mull has been in the optometry field for over 23 years now and has literally been everything from a clinic technician to an Optician. He was offered a position with the eye care team for the Dolphins 10 years ago when his wife, Melissa, was in management for the office of Dr. Robert Davis in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. Over the years, he has been able to meet celebrated Miami Dolphins like Dan Marino, Coach Don Shula, and even modern day players like Cameron Wake, Zach Thomas, Jason Taylor, Ricky Williams, Auburn's Ronnie Brown, Karlos Dansby, and Sidney Lanier's Jeno James. Of course, Dr. Mull has roots right here in Montgomery having attended Capital Heights Jr. High, graduated from the LAMP Program at Sidney Lanier, and spent 2 years at AUM before transferring to UCF. Dr. Mull started his career with Wes & Dr. Lisa Daniel back in 1991, and he has found his home at Montgomery Lasik & Eye Care Center. Interestingly, he says that the relationships made on a daily basis continue to be his favorite part of being a doctor. Dr. Mull says one of the biggest events of his career was while doing an eye exam on a young patient and finding a large melanoma (cancer) inside the eye. This patient was referred to a retina specialist, and treated by oncology. Thanks to Dr. Mull and a routine eye exam their life was most likely saved.. This is why we feel Montgomery Lasik & Eye Care is the best and trust them with our family. Leanne had Lasik surgery about 6 years ago and since then all 3 of our daughters have either had glasses or contacts done here. Recently, our oldest, Kimberlee, who is now 18, had Lasik as well and is seeing perfectly with no glasses! Want more info on eye health? A few tips from Dr. Mull - UV Protection is key, a diet and nutrition high in antioxidants, visual breaks every 20 to 30 minutes from computer work, and an eye exam every 1 - 2 years is recommended. If you're considering Lasik surgery, Dr. Mull would love to answer any questions you have and is always willing to set up a free consultation with Wendy or Wes to see if you're a candidate! They offer All Laser Lasik, and this technology has reduced the risk factors significantly. Recovery time is fast, as most patients are feeling great and seeing fantastic the very next day. In fact, most patients are back to work following a relaxing weekend, and enjoying freedom from the frustration of glasses and contacts. Even more exciting is that they can wear ANY sunglasses they desire! You can call for your free consultation at (334) 387-2020! Ask Dr. Mull about the Miami Dolphins, or any football for that matter and you'll surely have a great conversation starter! Sometimes I think he made Leanne's vision TOO clear - she sees EVERYTHING I do and I don't get away with much these days. On the flip side, I know we can trust the staff at Montgomery Lasik & Eye Care Center with all of our eyecare needs.Having recently hit the "40" mark, it may be time for my first set of reading glasses (I'm tired of borrowing Leanne's "blingy" frames). I hear they have some more manly Ray-Ban frames available for guys like me! Trust your family's eye care to Dr Mull with Montgomery Lasik & Eye Care Center, and be sure to take advantage of end of the year savings on Lasik surgery procedures. Also, don't miss the opportunity to use your Flex-Money if you're a First Responder and have it available - visit MontgomeryLasik.net !

Don’t confuse looking after yourself with being selfish

Y

by Kalai Mugilan

Yes, you are right, the world is full of confusing affirmations. At one level, we are encouraged to look after ourselves, and at another, we are accused of being selfish when we do eventually make time to look after ourselves. So, when we finally make time for ourselves, especially the type of time that we take off ensure longevity in caring for others, for example, going to the gym or making time to take an afternoon off to let steam off the pressure cooker we are sitting in, we feel guilty. Well, stop, do not feel guilty. Remember, when you care for yourself, and you know, that self-care ensures that you care for your loved ones longer and with a greater peace of mind and presence, you are on the right track. Remember, when the air steward gives us instructions, they always ask us to put on the oxygen mask on ourselves before, let me say it again, before we put the mask on our most precious cargo, our children we must wear the mask first. There is a certain logic in this, the survival of the child is increased if we ensure the oxygen mask is on ourselves first. In ambulances, paramedics are informed, if and when there is a patient that is too delirious and is potentially harmful to the paramedic or disruptive to the paramedic, they are instructed to knock the patient out, yes, knock them out, by which the survival of the patient is ensured. There are many situations in life that warrants us making sure we look after ourselves first, by which we are able to give the best of ourselves. Therefore, stop feeling guilty, and look after yourself. Dr. Kalai Mugilan received his Doctorate of Health Promotion/Medical Sociology. What's

THE

LESSON?

by Rev. Dr. Wendy R. Coleman

A

A few weeks ago, a very dear friend transitioned from time to eternity. In a moment she slipped away and left a void in the lives of all who knew her. The beautiful smile she flashed whenever she saw you was pure joy. The way she would tell you the absolute, unfiltered truth (whether you were ready for it or not) was refreshing – if sometimes quite painful! The sound of her belly laugh that she would try to stifle in the quietest moments was contagious. Regardless of how hard you tried to keep from cracking up, seeing Venicia honestly struggle not to laugh out loud was funnier than anything. Resistance was futile . . . So when God called her from among us, as He often does His angels, it was hard to wrap my mind around the fact that she would never walk through the door again. She would never infect us again with her laughter in the natural.

Although the truths she shared with us will always remain, her unique & beautiful voice will now be heard only in the videos we will replay over and over again. Now that her transition has settled into a place where my spirit can accept it, I find myself asking God the question that often comes up when the unexpected, unexplained, unimaginable happens: WHAT’S THE LESSON? Most people might say that death doesn’t carry a lesson. It just happens. We’ll all have to face it eventually, won’t we? That might be the lesson: be ready to go when it’s your time. But that doesn’t set right in my soul. I don’t believe God intends for us to live our lives being preoccupied with death and dying. Instead, I believe the most important lesson that the passing of friends like Venicia and loved ones we hold so close to our hearts is much simpler and absolutely more uplifting.

Here’s the lesson: LIVE. That’s all. LIVE. Death will invariably affect all of us at some point. But just a sure as I’m writing this and you’re reading it, I believe the chief lesson of death is that we’re supposed to LIVE every moment until it’s time to go. I believe that as much as it hurts, God uses even death to remind us how important it is for us to LIVE. Live honestly. Live wholly. Live passionately. Live rightly. Live truthfully. Live lovingly. Live joyfully. Live meticulously. Live carefully. Live fully. Live gratefully. Live selflessly. Live gladly. Live realistically. Live purposefully. Live abundantly. Learn the lesson and LIVE. LIVE. LIVE.

Rev. Dr. Wendy R. Coleman serves as Pastor of First Congregational Christian Church, UCC, and as Chair for the Department of Theatre Arts at Alabama State University.

Spotlight on...Filet & Vine

Filet & Vine Filet & Vine Market, Deli, and Bottleshoppe started in 1997 with partners Derk Lyerly and Jud Blount in Old Cloverdale, Montgomery, Alabama. After six months of renovations, the doors were opened to the public in March of 1998.

When asked the inspiration behind opening Filet and Vine, Derk responds, “My passion and love for beef and steaks.” Derk Lylery grew up working with German chefs preparing beef and went on to work in the beef department of Winn Dixie for 20 years. His vision was to open a facility that not only provided the best cuts of beef available, but also a deli featuring gourmet sandwiches, soup and salad bar, grocery store, meals to go and catering for all events. In addition, it contains a Bottleshoppe that has central Alabama's largest selection of wine and beer, with over 10,000 bottles of wine and 150 types of beers. If they don't have it, they can order it! Longtime friend Jud Blount recognized Derk’s vision and wanted to partner with him to turn the one-stop shop idea into a reality. Over the years they have expanded twice, now occupying over 6500 square feet, and have seating for 140 people.

college preparatory curriculum. Our accelerated elementary classes are supplemented with offerings for all ages in music, Spanish, technology, and both visual and performing arts. Throughout upper school, students have the opportunity to choose from a variety of Honors, Advanced Placement, and Elective offerings. Since 2012, Macon East offers a 1:1 Apple iPad program. Every student in grades 1-12 is issued an Apple iPad for use during the school year, and all K3K5 students have access to iPod Touch devices for daily use in the classroom. Founded in 1995 in Cecil, Alabama, Macon East was birthed of Macon Academy upon the closing of its Tuskegee campus. The original school, established over 50 years ago in Macon County, was built on the belief in a family environment and small school atmosphere and that remains a part of the framework that sets Macon East apart today. It’s a place where students feel at home and know that every faculty member has a genuine interest in their education and personal achievement on and off campus. Recognizing that each student is a valued individual with unique physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs, our teachers provide the guidance needed to encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning. Athletics is a big part of life on campus at Macon East with over 80% of upper school students participating in one or more interscholastic sports.

Team sports at MEA include baseball, basketball, cheerleading, football, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. Beginning in 3rd grade, elementary boys may participate in interscholastic football, and all elementary girls K3-6 may participate in cheerleading. The Knights have won 25 regional/ area championships and 12 state championships. Most recently in girls’ athletics, MEA is the reigning back-toback state champions in both volleyball and softball. Extracurricular activities include many opportunities for student leadership and community service through various clubs and organizations. At Macon East Academy, students are held to high standards in all areas of student life, and Christian values are reinforced throughout all school programs, policies, and practices. The administration and faculty believe that the best schools have a “small town” feel where honesty, integrity, respect, and gratitude are the qualities most admired.

Meow, Woof & Chirp

Fa l l, a s e a s o n f u ll of “ T ICKS” and Trea t s by Dr. Phillip V. Mitchell Fall is finally here! Cooler weather, football, tail gating, and many hours of outside fun for your family and pets. But many of us forget fall is still an opportune time for parasites. We all fear the dreadful fleabites that cause aggravation to our pets, as well as the pet owner. However, we often forget the one parasite that can cause the most damage, the tick. Interestingly, ticks are not insects. These blood-sucking parasites actually have 8 legs instead of six making them more closely related to spiders. Although tick bites are painless, their bite wound can cause infection. More importantly, ticks -unlike fleas, carry and spread a variety of infectious organisms. For example, ticks can carry blood parasites that cause feline infectious anemia and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Blacklegged tics often referred to as “deer ticks” carry Lyme disease, a common disease in the southern area that can cause arthritis and several other chronic conditions in both pets and people. Ticks can also carry a neurotoxin produced in their salivary gland that can cause “tick paralysis”. Living in one of the “tick regions” of the country, I have treated numerous cases of tick paralysis. And, recently, had one of my “own” pets contract the condition. Tick paralysis is far more common in pets than Lyme disease, or Rocky Mountain spotted fever. For this reason, pet owners need to be aware of its causes, symptoms, treatments, and prevention.

Causes: As mentioned previously, tick paralysis is caused by a toxin produced in the salivary gland of certain species of female ticks. The toxin is injected into the blood stream when the tick attaches and bites the dog.

Dr. Mitchell is a 1988 graduate of the Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine. He is an active member of the American Animal Hospital Association, Alabama Veterinary Medical Association and American Veterinary Medical Association. 48

Insurance 101

Do You Really Need Life Insurance? by Henry Hernandez, State Farm™ Insurance Agent

Life insurance isn’t just for married couples with children. The need for life insurance is much broader. “Anybody who would experience a financial loss or an emotional loss after a death will need some type of life insurance,” says Marvin Feldman, president and CEO of the Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education.

Who is Life Insurance For?

What Can My Life Insurance Cover?

Having dependents of any kind necessitates life insurance. Here are examples:

Beyond paying for final expenses, loved ones can put these death benefits toward:

• Unmarried couples. Unmarried individuals may have a significant other who relies on their support. Life insurance can help provide for them.

• Paying off debt

• Stay-at-home spouses. Life insurance isn’t just for breadwinners. It can help cover the cost of replacing the services of stay-at-home parents. • Single parents. These individuals are typically the sole source of support for their children. Life insurance can help provide for children financially should their parent die. • Singles. Single individuals could be responsible for aging parents or may have significant debt. “Life insurance helps make sure those debts are paid,” Feldman says. • Retirees. Insurance can help replace income from parttime work, Social Security benefits, pensions or other employer benefits. It helps spouses continue living as they’re accustomed. • Empty nesters. Older adults may have custody of a grandchild or provide support for other family members. Life insurance may help this care to continue. • Business owners. Life insurance has many benefits for business owners, such as helping protect family members from taking on a person’s professional debt, or providing funds for survivors to buy out the deceased’s interest.

• Financing an education • Settling estate taxes • Contributing to charity • Creating an inheritance • Replacing income • Replacing employer benefits Are there additional benefits? Some policies also offer living benefits. Whole policies and universal life policies accumulate value that can be tapped as retirement income or used to help cover unexpected expenses. Universal life policies also may have riders allowing chronically ill policyholders to withdraw the face amount during their lifetimes to help cover long-term care costs or to prepare loved ones financially before passing. To get an idea of how much life insurance you might need, contact State Farm® agent Henry Hernandez.

1 Unpaid loans and withdrawals will reduce the guaranteed death benefit and policy cash value. Loans also accrue interest.

Chocolate Diamonds by Geri Cronier Graduate Gemologist, Jewelry Designer, and VP Croniers Fine Jewelry

When mixing color into a jewelry wardrobe, chocolate diamonds, also known as cognac or brown diamonds, are a fabulous tool. They add depth to design, and just like your man’s khaki pants, brown goes with everything! The dark golden brown color also bridges and connects yellow gold and white or platinum pieces, so if you have both white gold and yellow gold pieces, these diamonds can make these pieces of differing gold colors make more sense together. Cognac diamonds are usually less costly than their white cousins and have much more sparkle and brilliance than smoky quartz (the only other brown stone you see in fine jewelry). So consider a pair of chocolate diamond studs or dangles with a chocolate diamond as the centerpiece, or perhaps surrounding diamond halo for an artistic yet heirloom feel. The use of these brown beauties is not new in jewelry design. Most people simply did not know that they were diamonds. In the last few years, all colors of diamonds have been in the news, in celebrity engagement rings, and in design more than ever. Rose gold is an incredible backdrop for the brown and white diamonds. The copper colored metal is used in design with white and yellow metals as well. These are all fun elements to mix in design with fine pieces and can help your “fancy” or “cocktail” pieces to seem more up to date and relevant when mixed and worn together.

Art Journaling... With A Twist! by Kasey Hope

My new favorite art trend... and it's oh-so-easy and inexpensive... Art Journaling on old books!! I've seen this on several artsy blogs lately sooo.. I went to the Dollar Tree and bought a ton of their $1 hardback books. We took the cover off, added some cool duck tape to the cover, and started doodling! This is a great alternative to the more expensive sketchbook, plus art over words is oh-so-interesting! The easiest way is to start with a sharpie marker and then simply fill in with crayon or watercolor. That's it! You could even do this on old sheet music. Believe me... your kids will love it and the pieces will be frameworthy! Take a look at a few of the pieces that inspired me! Kasey Hope is an Auburn University graduate and the owner of P'zazz Art Studio in Prattville, where she has been teaching art lessons to adults and children for 7 years.

osting two consignment sales a year led Lynda J a c k s o n - Ta y lor, the owner of The Shoppes of My Kids Attic, to start her business in the spring of 2004. On August 1, 2006, she opened the current location of The Shoppes of My Kids Attic. With her father’s encouragement, she was able to achieve her goal of hosting the annual consignment sales, as well as following her dream of owning a boutique. The Shoppes of My Kids Attic is no ordinary boutique. It is a variety of individual shops whose products are sold through Lynda’s store catering to newborns all the way up to those young at heart. It gives these individuals an outlet without total full time commitment. Over the 8 years, The Shoppes of My Kids Attic has been in their current

location, the store has increased from twenty-seven individual shops to about fifty-five shops. Lynda loves her shop, says it is a dream, and is thankful for all of the relationships it has built. The Shoppes of My Kids Attic currently hosts three consignment sales a year. The annual consignment sale in February has a variety of children’s spring and summer clothes. The sale in September contains a variety of fall and winter clothes for children. This year, the store will host the 3rd annual women’s and home decor consign-

ment sale in March. Check for more information on the consignment sales in our upcoming issues! Call The Shoppes of My Kids Attic today at 334270-1456 or better yet stop by at their store located at 401 Coliseum Boulevard.

Why we should SCARE our children! by Boyd Saunders & Yvonna Richardson

From ghoulies and ghosties And long-leggedy beasties And things that go bump in the night, Good Lord, deliver us! A Scottish Tale BOO! The season to be frightened, Halloween, is just around the corner and many parents cringe at children's request to read spooky books and scary stories, or even worse, watch them on television and in movies. Many parents worry that exposure to evil characters can send the wrong message, so they steer clear of these tales altogether - hoping children will sleep nightmare-free and happily ever after. But psychologists say scary tales serve an important purpose in a child's development. Experts believe frightening stories provide great nail-biting entertainment, spine-tingling scary adventures and actually help kids face the fears they already have - and vanquish them. Building new found confidence. Scary stories allow children to experience a full range of emotions concerning topics like abandonment, while at the same time experience the vicarious thrill of fending for themselves and emerging victorious. Other tales help kids wrestle with their negative impulses, such as greed and envy, and sibling rivalry. Every time the monster, witch, or bad guy dies or goes away, it magically restores children's faith in their ability to conquer their own troublesome emotions. An open door allowed a gigantic lizard (3 inch) to crawl into Boyd's classroom at Green Gate from the playground, and most of his fellow students screamed with fear. This made Boyd curious. He was studying percentages and he wanted to know what percent of his fellow students were scared of spiders. His next thought was . . . if not spiders, what fears lay under their bed? Boyd's quest led him on a mission of discovery, and he too lost some of his fears in talking to others about theirs. Finding such random fears as bugs, closets, and certain foods made the usual "monster under the bed" seem silly. I guess the experts were right, Boyd overcame his own fears of what lies under the bed . . . . As an educator, I know if you can get a child to become an avid reader you have accomplished something huge. One of my favorite authors, R. L. Stein, who has been sending shivers down children's spines for 20 years, is certainly one of the best. Each year, I attend the National Book Fair sponsored by the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. Stein was a guest author this year. Stein, having sold 3 million "Goosebumps" in 32 languages, a television show, and related merchandise, did not disappoint me or my 25 year old daughter who read his first book in 1992 "Welcome to Dead House. He signed books for 2 hours and spoke twice to a standing room only crowd that thoroughly enjoyed his reading aloud from past books as well as a glimpse into his new book. Boyd and I agree if you want a good spine tingling, hair-raising, belly laugh read any "Goosebump" book with your child this Halloween!
