Back to School Held every October, Grandparents Day – where students invite their grandmas, grandpas, and special friends – is one of the smiliest, most anticipated days of the school year.
From the Head of School —
Dear Prairie Families, Collaboration is a key component of any successful endeavor. Here at Prairie, working together to pursue greatness is at the core of everything we do. Classmates, lab partners, reading groups, cast members, and teammates cooperate to strive for and often achieve excellence. Faculty visit each other’s classes to improve instruction. Parents and alumni also pitch in to organize the Prairie Fund, the Golf Classic, and Prairie Premiere, as well as dozens of other events to make our community stronger. As a school, our strength comes from relationships. We are better together, and it is participation that helps us improve.
“As a school, our strength comes from relationships. We are better together, and it is participation that helps us improve. “
As you’ll read in this issue, members of the Prairie family joined forces to move the needle from good to great in many ways over the past year. Our collective efforts in fundraising led to a record-setting year for the Prairie Fund: double the number of parents made a gift this year, fresh off the heels of a fifth consecutive year of 100 percent participation by full-time faculty. Our school is doing great things, but getting to the next level will take our whole community working together to support the mission. We need your help in the coming year. Every contribution, big or small, moves us forward. Volunteer an hour or two in the concessions booth for a volleyball game or soccer match. Sign up to be a Buddy and help a new-to-Prairie family settle into their experience. Make your contribution to the 2019-20 Prairie Fund and encourage your friends to do the same. People make Prairie great, and we are an aspirational school for aspirational families. Thank you for choosing to be a part of “Team Prairie.” Thank you for dedicating your time, talents, and treasure to helping our students and faculty have everything they need to be their best selves. Sincerely,
Nathaniel W. Coffman, Ed.D. Head of School & President

From the Board Chair —
Dear Friends, Prairie’s legacy is rooted in the strength of its community and a unique spirit of giving. We are united by a shared belief in and a commitment to our mission, and a willingness to tirelessly give in so many ways. This is our foundational strength and the reason Prairie is the great school it is today. My mother, Gene Johnson, envisioned Prairie as a school that would provide academic excellence to expand young minds; athletic opportunities to strengthen the body and build self-confidence; and artistic enrichment to inspire creativity. A school dedicated to bringing out the best in all students by celebrating and nurturing the unique talents and qualities of each and every one. Most importantly, a special place imbued with kindness, where children care about each other and the world around them. Mom’s vision for Prairie continues to inspire and propel us forward into the future. Thanks to the generosity of our Prairie family and friends, her vision – our vision – comes to life every single day. My deepest appreciation to all for your ongoing support! Sincerely,
Helen Johnson-Leipold ‘74 Chairman, Board of Trustees

Primary School
Dear Prairie Families, Prairie has long been a powerhouse of academics, athletics, and the arts, even before I was a student here myself. Our students’ successes speak volumes to our collective strength as a community, and to the spirit of collaboration that serves as the foundation for everything we do. This year, we saw that spirit propel us to new heights in philanthropy. Last fall, I reached out to ask for your partnership in growing the Prairie Fund, the annual fundraising drive that supports everything from curricular resources to faculty enrichment to athletic uniforms. We agreed that every contribution matters, regardless of size, and most importantly that our strength lies in numbers. Your commitment produced a record-setting year, doubling parent participation in the Prairie Fund over just eight weeks! Our efforts are already taking root. That award-winning musical production I mentioned earlier? Students built the sets using tools paid for by your donations. Those funds also covered materials for Science Olympiad participants to practice for their competitions, and the equipment Primary School students used to record their first-ever podcast. What’s more, our community ties are stronger because of the work we have done together. Our volunteers, our faculty, and our donors grew relationships as they grew the Prairie Fund, and that is an accomplishment of which we can all be proud. I am grateful to be part of this school community, and look forward to seeing what we can achieve together in the years ahead.

A COMMITMENT TO CULTURE — By Brendan J. O’Brien It is not uncommon for students at Prairie to learn about world culture in their coursework. To truly understand culture, however, one must go outside the classroom. Perspective is honed, appreciation shaped, not so much by words on a page, but by people in motion. For the fourth consecutive year, A Taste of Prairie and the Multicultural Fair, brought together students, parents, and 14 | prairieschool.com

faculty in celebration of our community’s many cultures and customs.A student bagpiper. Islamic artists. Sushi makers. Paper crane creators. All of them convened in the Student Research Center beneath an impressive array of colorful flags from around the world as attendees enjoyed the food, dance, and traditions of 30+ countries. The fair, organized by the Upper School’s Multicultural Club with help from Pat Badger, Advisor to the Head of School for Arts and Equity, welcomed 700+ attendees this spring and continues to be a highly-anticipated way for the TPS community to celebrate – and set in motion – a culture of interaction and inclusivity.
The Prairie Fund
The Prairie Fund is our most critical fundraising endeavor, as it supports every facet of school life. Our entire community is grateful to the donors who contributed to the Prairie Fund in the 2018-19 year.

The More Things Change… Under the direction of Theater Director Dena Roncone, Prairie’s Drama Department continues to produce the kind of mesmerizing shows for which the school has long been known. For the second consecutive year, the Upper School Players received ample recognition for their spring musical. This year’s production of Mamma Mia! was a vibrant, rollicking affair filled with familiar ballads and brilliant performances. The cast and crew followed up their eleven Jerry Award nominations for 2018’s The Drowsy Chaperone with another eleven this time around. Ben Wagner, Technical Theatre Director, and Melissa Flynn, an Upper School Math Teacher who regularly assists on the set, both won a Jerry for Outstanding Scenic Design. The Jerry Awards are the preeminent High School Music Awards organization in Southeastern Wisconsin. While the performers at Prairie continue to change, the performances remain as epic as ever. ~ Brendan J. O’Brien 20 | prairieschool.com

IN THEIR OWN WORDS
Karen Gorton ’82
Associate Professor, School of Nursing and Health Studies, University of Missouri (Kansas City) “As one of two girls in AP Physics at Prairie, I have been grateful for the mentoring of Mr. Buck. Additionally, Mr. Corsica and Mr. T. were so supportive of the girls in the AP courses. Mr. D. allowed me to explore and discover art in new ways in the glass studio. The time in the glass studio was powerful in that I could be creative, forming and shaping the glass. This creativity along with the sense of ‘I can do this’ has served me well since graduation as I have taken on new roles in nursing and nursing academia.” Karen Gorton earned her Ph.D. in Nursing Education from the University of Northern Colorado. She is a member of the Board of Directors for Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing, which has over 130,000 active members in over 90 countries.
The 21st Annual Golf Classic & Dinner Prairie’s Golf Classic & Dinner is a long-standing tradition that, over the past two decades, has raised over $1.5 million for the school’s financial aid
program. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers and donors, the 2018 event netted $124,000 in support of deserving students who would otherwise be unable to afford the cost of full tuition.

A STORY FOR THE AGES
And yet, if you focus on the fact fairytales often revolve around fantastic forces and heroic exploits, you could reason this season was filled with plenty of both.
— By Brendan J. O’Brien
While it was freshman Jill Decker twice finding the back of the net in the title game, this team was propelled toward greatness all year long by its dynamic group of seniors. Libby Antonneau, Gloriana Campos, Claire Coffman, Emma Fleming, Brooke Foster, Jordanne Orlowski, Cate Patterson, Laney Peterson, Maddy Yde, and Lauren Zenisek were a talented and spirited group of leaders, a contingent continually offering underclassmen important lessons in trying new things, staying the course, selflessness, goal-setting – soccer pun intended – and having fun.
On one hand, it is a misnomer to say the Prairie Girls’ Soccer team – which won their second WIAA State Championship in four years – experienced a fairytale season in 2019. Fairytales are filled with unreal luck and improbable events culminating in farfetched endings. Once this group began tournament play, one thing was obvious: there was nothing improbable about what they were bound to accomplish. When the final whistle blew on the Hawks’ 2-0 victory over Oostburg in the Division 4 title game, the girls had outscored their postseason opponents 37-1. There is nothing lucky about that.
And so, by this measure, maybe the Girls’ Soccer team did experience a fairytale in 2019. Congratulations, girls. Here’s to the next chapter.
Prairie Premiere 2019
First as a rummage sale and now as a gala auction, the Prairie Premiere has always raised significant funds for student scholarships and financial aid. Forever a
labor of love, Premiere’s success has always been tied to its extraordinary volunteers, donors, and all of the guests that make each event so unique. In 2019, over 420 attendees raised their paddles to bring home $293,000 to afford even more students access to a Prairie education.

RITES OF A WIND POINT SPRING Very few spectacles on campus are as impressive, or anticipated, as the majestic ballroom that magically appears in the Johnson Athletic Center every April. Each spring, before the signature, tomato-red tulips push through the berm just outside the building, the Prairie Premiere Steering Committee utilizes everything from custom lighting to handcrafted chandeliers in the hope of wowing even the most seasoned of attendees. And they haven’t failed yet. Held April 27th, with a theme of Illuminate, Premiere 2019 was yet another unforgettable gala in support of Prairie’s scholarship and financial aid program. The beauty and impact inherent in the school’s signature event continue to be found in the ways Premiere brings our community together.
Case in point, one need only visit the JAC on the eve of Premiere, when the building is bustling with people preparing for the big night, to understand what Prairie Pride really means. Student musicians practicing and readying their instruments. Parent volunteers carrying silent auction items and hanging signs. Art teachers installing the student creations – one from every grade – that will soon be auctioned off. Steering Committee members decorating tables and carrying flowers. This, more than anything, is why Premiere warms so many hearts every spring: when the Prairie community comes together in support of our mission, anything is possible.

THE PERFECT
FORMULA One could argue the truest example of teamwork on campus is found in a pair of science labs located in the winding hallway leading to the Upper School. By day, these are the classrooms of Jean Weaver and Arooj Mukarram; however, come each afternoon at 3:45, this is where Science Olympiad team members report to practice for events such as Water Quality, Code Busters, and Designer Genes. Another sensational year for the Science Olympiad team – or SciOly if you’re hip to industry lingo – concluded in March with Prairie’s best-ever State Competition finish. at the UW-Milwaukee Regional in January, Prairie placed 5th at State, bringing home medals in fourteen of twenty-three events. The school’s 2019 State Champions included Seniors Chase Giles — who finished top three in all six events he took part in — Nithya Attipetty, Pranav Bajaj, Anna Milonas, and Anna Peterson, as well as Junior Nancy Wang. However, the success of SciOly is deeper than just top-podium recognition. A closer examination of the program’s inner workings reveals teamwork and collaboration in the truest sense. Not only are practices typically student-run, but in the weeks leading up to State, the labs were packed with students helping their teammates prepare, despite the fact most were not participating in State themselves.
“I am tremendously proud of these students and their accomplishments this year,” said Weaver, SciOly Club Advisor and Director of Math, Science, and Engineering. “Many of them prepared for their events all by themselves with no help from teachers, while others who could not go to State selflessly contributed to the success of the team by helping to build various devices.” When it comes to Prairie’s mission of “Nurturing the creativity, interests and abilities of every student, inspiring each to explore, thrive, and add value individually and in collaboration with others”, no one does it better than Science Olympiad. — By Brendan J. TEACHERS SPEND THEIR SUMMER PUTTING IN THE WORK
—
Institute at the Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs, CO. The weeklong workshop focused on how to listen deeply and to respond in ways that promote learning, meaningful relationships, and responsible behavior.
A For a week this summer, J OY ARAGONES, Middle School Science Teacher, participated in the 2019 MIT Science and Engineering Program for Teachers (SEPT). Joy was one of only fifty STEM educators worldwide to have earned this distinguished opportunity. As part of the cohort, Joy spent her mornings in sessions with MIT professors discussing their research, and her afternoons in a project-based learning course. Joy says the program was “Hands-down, the best experience of my professional life so far.” [A]

Research Center (SRC), has been selected to the 2020 Teens’ Top Ten Committee, a national panel assembled by the Young Adult Library Services Association, a division of the American Library Association. As part of the committee, McKenzie will represent TPS among a few dozen school and public libraries around the country in selecting the best YA literature of the year. 3rd Grade Teacher and Math Department Co-Chair
KATHRYN LALONDE spent a week in June attending a
course on “Chairing Your Department,” hosted by Independent School Management (ISM) in Minneapolis. The course focused on teaching and leading to deliver the school’s mission with excellence. Along with other members of her cohort, Kathryn wrote professional goals, discussed what makes effective and comprehensive faculty development as well as how to create an environment that inspires both students and teachers, and developed growth-focused activities.
In June, The Prairie School hosted a one-week ASM Materials Camp for teachers, led by Upper School Mathematics Teacher
BERNOLI BAELLO, along with Jeffery Webb, a high
school teacher from Springfield, OH. The program aims to help educators strengthen their STEM curriculum from the middle school to the high school level by giving them ideas for engaging and empowering students through materials science education. Participants learned about a different type of material each day by learning scientific principles, conducting experiments with them, and discovering the everyday applications of these materials. Bernoli also taught the camp at North Central College in Naperville, IL, and at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, IL. ___

“Prairie was a place that let you be yourself.”
Donor Profile: Tom Rogers ’99 A GREAT PLACE TO GROW
— By Aliya Pitts, Assistant Head of School
For Community Relations
Our roots keep us grounded and give us a place for us to return, whether that place is the house we grew up in or somewhere else that feels like home. For alumnus Tom Rodgers ’99, his roots are firmly planted in Wisconsin, evidenced not only by his love of the Brewers, but also by his deep connection with Prairie and its people. Although Tom has created a home in suburban Deerfield, Illinois, he remains closely linked to his alma mater. Tom arrived at Prairie when he was just two years old, beginning as a student in his mother Mary Lynn Rodgers’ Early School classroom, which eventually became known 36 | prairieschool.com

as the Shining Stars. As a lifer, his co-curricular activities -- and off-the-record shenanigans -- ran the gamut, from glassblowing to jazz band to basketball. What Tom remembers the most about Prairie, though, are its people; people like Hazel Campbell, his 4th Grade teacher, who provided unending support when his father passed away that year. “It’s pretty unique that this is a place where you can get a world-class education from teachers who actually care about you as a whole person,” he muses. “Whether you were a high flyer or needed some extra help, Prairie was a place that let you be yourself.” Today, Tom lives and works as an Information Security System & Network Administrator south of the state line, but remains a frequent fixture at Prairie events. In tribute
to his roots, he also continues to give back to the school with an unrestricted annual gift to the Prairie Fund, and he does so to ensure that students now and in the future “Have all of the same opportunities my generation did -and more.” Thanks to support from Prairie Fund donors like Tom and his family, Prairie has indeed been able to expand and grow its programs. Just in the past year, the school was able to finish its all-new Wonder Lab & Robotics Workshop and reinstitute a Video Production department in Middle and Upper School. Philanthropy from Prairie alumni, parents, and families allows Prairie to continue to deepen its roots in the community, ensuring it will be a place for alumni to call “home” for decades to come.

As the old adage goes, hindsight is 20/20. Our view of the past tends to be sharper than our perspective in the moment, which makes the ability to reflect so critical in evaluating our experiences. In reflecting on the adventure of their time at Prairie, the Class of 2019 can clearly see the impact this school has had on their lives. For many of them, the biggest takeaways exist in lessons that have changed their point of view. Senior class president Pranav Bajaj remembers the first time he set foot on campus. At just six years old, he had already been in and out of four other schools before his family settled in Racine. “I remember first seeing this huge brick building thinking, ‘Oh no, not another school!’” he recalls. Bajaj quickly learned that there was much more in store for him in ‘this huge brick building’ than just reading, writing, and arithmetic.
Beyond books and tests, Prairie’s Class of 2019 relied on bonds and experiences to guide their time on campus.
He and his classmates received plenty of instruction in those subjects and more. But twelve years later, what does he remember most? The warm smile from his First Grade teacher, Susan Holum, as he entered the classroom on day one. Learning the importance of being kind to his classmates, something that earned him extra recess time in Middle School. The phrase “Carpe diem” (seize the day), which Bajaj learned during his first trip to Camp Manito-Wish as a timid freshman.
The Class of 2019 included fifteen students who attended Prairie from 1st Grade or earlier all the way through 12th grade – or as they’re commonly referred to at TPS, Lifers.
“I’ve come to understand the special thing about Prairie is that learning always goes beyond academics,” he says. “I think the most important thing we’ll be taking from Prairie is intangible: the experiences and relationships that we’ve built within our close-knit, collaborative environment have helped transform us into the leaders we are today.” “We have learned how to look out for one another, we have learned how to respect one another, and we have learned how to become good people.”

Bajaj and his fellow graduates will carry those lessons with them, as they set off for the next leg of their adventure. Graduates of the Class of 2019 received offers of admission from 135 of the finest colleges and universities across the country. This fall, they’ll begin classes at the likes of Washington University in St. Louis, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the University of Michigan, Tulane University, Northwestern University, Syracuse University, the University of WisconsinMadison, and the University of Notre Dame.
Head of School Nat Coffman and his daughter, Claire ‘19, share an embrace during the ceremony.
Altogether, this group garnered offers for merit-based scholarships totaling more than $13 million from numerous colleges, corporations, and local organizations. Fifteen of this class’s sixty-eight graduates are considered “Lifers,” having attended Prairie since First Grade or earlier. Whether they attended Prairie for fifteen years or one year, these graduates have left their mark on the school community. Dr. Coffman thanked the group for their leadership in his message at their Commencement ceremony in May, and reiterated the importance of their relationships as they look ahead to the future. “While the buildings here at Prairie are awesome, what makes us the school [that we are] is the people,” he said. “As we all know, life is not a destination...moments of joy and tragedy, boredom and reflection that intertwine to weave the fabric of our lives. And what makes both the trials and celebrations worth it and meaningful are the people with whom we experience them.” “Your parents and siblings, your friends, your teachers, your colleagues, your teammates and your extended family, all share your adventure and are what make it interesting and valuable.” What’s coming next may appear blurry from where they’re standing now, but for this year’s graduates, lessons learned here at Prairie will help guide them as their bright and limitless futures start coming into focus.

Donor Profile: John ’83 and Jane Batten BEHIND THE SCENES
From loyal philanthropic support to phenomenal baked goods, John ’83 and Jane Batten continually shine in their support of Prairie.
— By Ellie Batten ’20 When John Batten ’83 – or as I like to call him, ‘Dad’ – first became a student at Prairie, he was completely unaware of the impact the school and its community would have on his life. From a young age, Dad knew what he wanted to do. He would become an engineer and eventually work for our family’s company, Twin Disc, Inc., in Racine. As he entered Upper School, and his plans were inching towards reality, he found himself trying to answer the question of what becoming an engineer would really entail. He found his answer in Gerry Buck’s Physics class his senior year. “He got me interested in what math was all about and helped realize why I was taking math classes,” Dad says. “That got me really interested in engineering. He was the last step that put it all together on what I knew I would be doing.” After graduating from Yale University in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts in History, Dad went on to study at the University of Colorado where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Surprisingly, Dad’s favorite Prairie memory is not one that has to do with math at all. In fact, his favorite memory is one that pushed him outside his comfort zone…a lot.
“Mrs. [ Joan] Spinks, the Drama teacher, called me to be in Twelfth Night,” he remembers. “I thought that was the only favor she was asking, but she told me I had to convince five other guys to be in it too. I did, and we had a ton of fun. I wish I’d done it earlier.” My Dad is a man of many talents and acting is not one of them. He preferred to work behind the scenes in hopes of being the Technical Manager his senior year. Performing in front of an audience was foreign to Dad, but the experience allowed him to see that Prairie was truly a place of limitless opportunity. Both my parents pride themselves on being involved with the Prairie community. As Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dad is passionate about ensuring kids from Racine get a chance to experience the same possibilities that he was fortunate enough to have during his time at Prairie. “Giving kids in this area access to a great place and making sure that it’s still the same outstanding school that I remember is what I enjoy most about giving back,” he says. Although my Mom, Jane, did not attend Prairie, she takes advantage of almost every volunteer opportunity she can. Whether it be making costumes for the Theater Department, decorating for
Prairie Premiere, or bringing delicious food to after-school activities, Jane Batten is always there. “I love being able to give back to the school, even in non-monetary ways,” she says. “I like giving my time. I also love getting to know the parents, kids, and staff on a personal basis. I just enjoy the overall good vibe of the school.” As donors, volunteers, and parents, my Mom and Dad give back in the hopes that Prairie will continue providing kids with amazing educational opportunities. Mom perfectly sums up why she and my Dad are so passionate about supporting the school: “My hope is that Prairie always remains child-centered. The kids should be the most important thing. Keep the focus on the students and giving them a great education.” — Having attended TPS since Early School, Ellie Batten ’20 is a true Prairie lifer. She plays volleyball and is an accomplished actress. In the spring of 2019, her performance as Sophie in the US Players’ production of Mamma Mia! earned her a Jerry Award nomination from the preeminent High School Music Awards organization in Southeastern Wisconsin. Unlike her Dad, acting is one of her many talents.

Expert Analysis Whether being asked for their opinions or tasked with giving tours, Prairie’s new Student Leadership Society plays a critical role in the admission process. — By Callie Atanasoff

while we are a creative, dynamic group that tries to stay
