A Shared Passion for Floral Storytelling

Christy McCoy: Elegance & Artistic Expression

With two decades of experience, Christy McCoy has mastered the art of transforming weddings into dreamlike celebrations. Beginning her career as a wedding photographer, she transitioned into florals and decor, earning her reputation by designing stunning bridal bouquets—pieces she believes are the heart of wedding florals, destined to be cherished for generations.

McCoy specializes in all aspects of wedding design, including decor, ceremony, reception, and bridal flowers. Each arrangement is tailored to the bride’s vision, theme, and season, ensuring it enhances rather than overwhelms the bride’s presence. While roses remain timeless, McCoy loves working with Dahlias, Anemones, Juliet Roses, and Peonies, appreciating their distinct beauty.

She stays current with bridal trends through magazines, Pinterest, and social media, noting a shift from rustic styles to elegant English garden aesthetics. To help brides refine their floral choices, she recommends creating a Pinterest board, allowing her to personalize designs through artistic color pairing. McCoy’s work blends love, beauty, and artistry, ensuring each wedding is as unforgettable as the blooms she creates.

Kim

Personal & Family-Centered Florals

Bainbridge native Kim Jeter crafts floral arrangements rich in family history and cherished memories. Her inspiration stems from her grandmother, Hazel Gainous, who uniquely incorporated heirlooms and sentimental objects into floral designs. Witnessing the joy these arrangements brought, Jeter was inspired to weave personal touches into wedding florals, ensuring each bouquet represents beauty and family unity.

Jeter believes marriage is more than just a celebration—it is the blending of families. She explains, “Marriage and weddings shouldn’t be just an event, and it’s more than spending money. Marriage should be about joining families.”

Her process begins by understanding a couple’s ability to afford floral arrangements. While purchasing flowers is straightforward for some, Jeter is committed to creating meaningful designs for couples with limited means. To achieve this, she asks the bride, groom, family members, and in-laws about sentimental items that can be incorporated into bouquets.

Jeter fondly recalls designing wedding bouquets with memorable and special objects and items from both

families, placing them at the center of the table so each family member could recognize their origins. She reflects on hearing the aunties of the bride or groom’s family members say, “My grandmother gave me that flower” or “My husband bought me that for Valentine’s Day,” turning simple florals into lasting treasures.

Exploring back roads and fields, Jeter finds wildflowers and hidden botanical gems—florals that many overlook but hold natural beauty and sentimental value. Her dedication to creating one-ofa-kind arrangements reflects each couple’s love, family, and personal journey. For her, Genesis 2:24 captures the essence of marriage: “And the two shall become one.”

Bill Cooper: Elegance and Timeless Blooms

With 43 years of experience and over 1,000 weddings, Bill Cooper has perfected the art of floral design, crafting breathtaking arrangements that embody love and elegance. His approach transcends simple flower arranging—his hands speak in blooms, creating memorable and meaningful designs.

Cooper observes a shift from traditional cascade bouquets to modern clutch bouquets, while roses remain the ultimate symbol of love. Drawing inspiration from magazines and bridal preferences, he meticulously matches each floral arrangement to the venue’s atmosphere, ensuring harmony between setting and design.

One of his most frequently styled locations is Mablewood Farm, a wedding venue where his floral artistry enhances the space. Whether designing for a rustic barn or an elegant garden, Cooper’s dedication ensures that each wedding is adorned with beauty, meaning, and creative precision.

Capturing the perfect day through the lens with photographer, Kendi Austinson

Kendi Austinson is a Bainbridge native with exceptional skills as a wedding photographer, renowned for capturing enduring moments that beautifully narrates a couple’s love story. Austinson’s love for photography came from having a deep appreciation for meaningful connections, and the beauty found in everyday moments,” She shares. “Photography became a way for me to blend that love with creativity–capturing genuine emotion and preserving memories through an artistic lens.”

Austinson has eight years of photography experience and documented 150 weddings and elopements. Her work has taken her to breathtaking locations such as the lush landscapes of Hawaii, the dramatic Taft Point cliffs in Yosemite, and the stunning red rock terrain of Arches National Park in Utah. While she enjoys the beauty of destination weddings, Austinson stated, "I also have a deep appreciation for South Georgia weddings, where the charm of moss-draped oaks and Southern hospitality creates the most beautiful, heartfelt celebrations.”

Austinson’s unique photography style is described as a “blend of light and storytelling that captures both the artistry and emotion of each moment.” Her ability to manipulate light and texture—whether golden hour glow, dramatic shadows, or soft, diffused tones— adds depth and mood to her images, creating a sense of timeless elegance. She thrives on the fast-paced nature of weddings, crafting detailed timelines for her couples to ensure that every critical moment is anticipated and seamlessly captured. “My experience allows me to capture the best images and create a stress-free, enjoyable experience. My goal is to be a photographer and someone they can rely on throughout the day,” Austinson explains.

For Austinson, lighting is the cornerstone of wedding photography. She strives to utilize natural light to enhance the beauty of each setting, be it “soft window light during a ceremony or ambient lighting at the reception.” Austinson particularly enjoys using direct flash for dancing photos during receptions, adding energy and vibrancy to her images. “It adds a fun, dynamic vibe that captures the energy of the moment and brings a sense of excitement to the images. Direct flash also freezes motion, giving her photos a playful and high-energy feel,” she stated.

To ensure every wedding is tailored to a couple’s unique vision, Austinson begins her process well before the big day. She sends detailed questionnaires to her clients, asking about specific requests and priorities, which allows her to align her photography with their vision. Austinson encourages couples to share all their ideas, big or small, and dives into their love story to truly understand their

dynamic. On the wedding day, she works tirelessly to capture the unfolding magic, adapting to the day’s pace while keeping her focus on the couple’s special moments.

SEW IN LOVE

Weaving Dreams into Fabric: Deborah James, is THE Stitching Queen

With every delicate stitch, Deborah James weaves dreams, love, and promises into stunning wedding gowns, ensuring each bride’s special day is nothing short of magical. A proud resident of Bainbridge, James discovered her passion for sewing at the tender age of five. Her mother, Alberta Flanders, passed down an extraordinary gift—the ability to transform simple fabric into meaningful, breathtaking creations.

Flanders possessed a rare talent—a photographic memory for fabric. Reflecting on her childhood, James recalls, “My mom was the type of seamstress who could look at items displayed in a store window and recreate them perfectly. If we wanted something, she’d go home, cut the pattern out using newspaper, and we’d have it within a day or two.” Inspired by her mother’s ingenuity and skill, James began sewing for others at just nine years old, crafting her first men's suit by sixteen.

James pursued an education in Design, Merchandising, and Business at The American College of London – Atlanta on Peachtree Dunwoody. However, a family emergency led her back to Bainbridge, where she contemplated finding a job. Seeing her hesitation, her husband, Bruce James, encouraged her, asking, “Why don’t you just sew?”

Though excited by the idea, James lacked a dedicated workspace—so Bruce took the initiative to add an additional room to their home, giving her th perfect space to reignite her passion. She credits as her “push” to restart her sewing career.

A Seamstress in High Demand

Without advertising, James built her reputation sol through word of mouth, earning the trust of clients delivering exceptional craftsmanship. Her first maj request came from Shirley and Shirelle Clark in 200 when Shirley reached out at midnight, needing a pageant dress altered by 6:00 AM. James worked tirelessly through the night, delivering the perfec altered gown by 5:00 AM.

Another unforgettable moment came when Carla Smith of Southwind Plantation reached out at midnight on a Friday, needing an urgent dress repai for her daughter’s pageant the following morning. B 8:00 AM, James had flawlessly completed the alteration, earning admiration and further establis her growing clientele.

James' talents also caught the attention of Cathy Bridges, a former classmate and mother of Maggie Bridges, Miss Georgia 2014. Their collaboration began when Cathy sought help with a pageant dress, leading James to alter Maggie’s gowns throughout her pageant career and even Cathy’s wedding dress. James has remained a trusted seamstress for Maggie, continuing to serve individuals from both t past and present while solidifying her name in the community.

Mastering the Art of Perfection

Known for her speed and precision, James explains, “What might take a typical seamstress days or weeks to complete, I can finish in much less time. On a good day, I can complete wedding dress alterations in a day—or even less—if I work consistently.”

Her perfectionist approach sets her apart. “If something doesn’t look right, I won’t let it leave hands. Either you’ll look like what you envisioned better—never anything less.” She prioritizes a single fitting, ensuring that garments are wearable, press and ready to go immediately.

The Meaning Behind Wedding Dresses

Through her work, James has developed a deep appreciation for wedding gowns, describing them as “significant pieces of fabric that embody artistry, craftsmanship, and personal meaning.” One of her most remarkable projects was for Abigail Smith, whose gown incorporated elements from three generations of wedding dresses belonging to her mother and grandmother. “Altering a dress from three different generations involves adjusting the design fabric, and fit while respecting the original aesth James explains.

Having crafted and transformed countless wedding dresses, James believes each gown tells its own unique story. Reflecting on her own wedding day, sh recalls the rush of emotions she felt.

A Seamstress Beyond the Fabric

James’ dedication goes beyond sewing—she personally assists brides in putting on their weddi dresses, ensuring that each gown transforms into a symbol of love, new beginnings, and commitment. To her, the craft is not merely a profession—it is a profound privilege to be part of a bride’s most cherished moment.

“I love creating fully customized items that become the bride and groom’s wedding “brand” – things that show not only their personalities as individuals but their life together as a couple.”
ALLISON POWELL

THE ART OF CELEBRATION

Crafting

Invitations and Party Goods That Wow with Allison Powell

Bring Elegance to Personalized Weddings

Bainbridge resident Allison Powell specializes in creating customized wedding designs, crafting everything from personalized invitations to elegant decor that reflects each couple’s unique style.

Her passion for art and design started early participating in art lessons as a child and throughout her teenage years. In college, Powell designed t shirts and banners for sorority events and campus activities, later using her creativity in the marketing field. “I found a true love for graphic design— anything from promotional materials to logos, helping customers bring their vision to life,” she shared.

Powell had long been the go-to friend for planning baby showers and weddings. “I’m always the host who offers to handle invitations, decorations, and party goods. I’m the queen of ‘I can make that’—and most of the time, that’s exactly what I did,” she said. When COVID and social distancing emphasized the importance of meaningful gatherings, she was inspired to launch Social Studio, LLC in May 2021. “Social Studio, LLC was created to help others celebrate any and every social occasion—big or small. It’s been a wonderful creative outlet that I truly love!”

Initially, Powell focused on party goods for holidays, birthdays, wedding showers, and baby showers. Her first wedding project came in Spring 2022 when she designed wedding items for a friend’s ceremony in Alys Beach, Florida. From there, she expanded her work, collaborating with numerous couples.

A Thoughtful Design Process

Powell’s approach to wedding design begins with gathering key details. She asks couples about their vision—whether they have a wedding monogram, crest, dog portrait, or other personalized

elements they’d like to include. She also collects details such as flower colors, venue, bridesmaids’ dress colors, inspiration photos, and more.

With this information, Powell creates a digital style guide that outlines the color palette, fonts, and design motifs, describing it as her “north star” throughout the process. If couples purchase wedding-related products elsewhere, she requests images to ensure consistency. Once the designs are completed, she shares them for approval and feedback before finalizing orders with a trusted supplier. Depending on the couple’s location, items are shipped directly to them, their wedding planner, or Powell herself. For couples who need guidance, she enjoys the freedom to explore multiple creative directions.

Wedding Trends & Personalization

As weddings evolve, Powell has noticed a shift toward personalization and bold colors. “Couples are thinking outside the box, creating authentic elements that reflect their love story,” she explains. Some of her favorite recent trends include custom watercolor envelope liners, full-color floral crests featuring the couple’s monogram, and uniquely shaped invitations and detail cards.

Powell’s favorite part of her work is getting to know the couple and designing wedding elements that reflect their personalities and journey together. “I love creating fully customized items that become the bride and groom’s wedding ‘brand’—things that showcase their individuality as well as their life together,” she shares. These personal touches range from koozies featuring the alma mater where they met, to monogrammed welcome boxes or drink stir sticks adorned with a sketch of their pet—small details that enhance the guest experience and create lasting memories.

LOVE, LAUGHTER, AND A MIC DROP

Crafting the Perfect Wedding Speech |

A wedding speech is a beautiful way to celebrate love, share heartfelt memories, and honor the newlyweds. Whether you’re the father of the bride, a bridesmaid, a groomsman, or one of the newlyweds, here’s how to write a memorable and meaningful speech for this special occasion.

When preparing your speech, consider weaving in fond memories and personal experiences that highlight the connection you share with the couple. Adding meaningful scripture, poems, or quotes can offer heartfelt inspiration and depth to your message. Don’t hesitate to include personal advice drawn from your own life—it’s these moments of sincerity that resonate most deeply with the audience. For additional guidance, you can explore online resources or even tap into AI assistance for creative ideas and structure.

FATHER OF THE BRIDE

As the father of the bride, your speech should be a mix of sentiment, pride, and a touch of humor. Share heartfelt memories of your daughter, perhaps reflecting on milestones in her life or her character. Welcome her partner into the family and speak warmly about their relationship. Conclude with words of wisdom and a toast to the couple’s future.

Tip: Keep the tone loving and supportive—it’s your chance to shine as a proud dad.

BEST MAN SPEECH

Your role as a groomsman involves balancing humor with sincerity. Open with a lighthearted story about the groom, sharing a memorable or funny moment. Compliment the bride and their relationship before wrapping up with well-wishes and a toast to their happiness.

Tip: Aim for tasteful humor that suits the celebratory atmosphere.

INSPIRTATION: The Union by Robert

BRIDESMAID SPEECH

As a bridesmaid, celebrate your bond with the bride Start with a fun or touching anecdote that showcases your friendship or sisterhood. Highlight the love and partnership between the couple, expressing admiration for their connection. End with encouraging words for their journey ahead and a celebratory toast.

Tip: Keep it upbeat, personal, and focused on the happiness of the day.

NEWLYWED SPEECH

Your speech as newlyweds is a heartfelt opportunity to thank your guests and each other. Share a brief version of your love story, highlighting special moments that brought you to this day. Take time to express gratitude to family, friends, and one another, ending with a toast to everyone who made your celebration possible.

Tip: Let your emotions shine through—this is your moment to celebrate your love and commitment.

You have known each other from the first glance of acquaintance to this point of commitment. At some point, you decided to marry. From that moment of yes, to this moment of yes, indeed, you have been making commitments in an informal way. All of those conversations that were held in a car, or over a meal, or during long walks – all those conversations that began with, “When we’re married”, and continued with “I will” and “you will” and “we will” – all those late-night talks that included “someday” and “somehow” and “maybe” – and all those promises that are unspoken matters of the heart. All these common things, and more, are the real process of a wedding. The symbolic vows that you are about to make are a way of saying to one another, “You know all those things that we’ve promised, and hoped, and dreamed – well, I meant it all, every word.” Look at one another and remember this moment in time. Before this moment you have been many things to one another – acquaintance, friend, companion, lover, dancing partner, even teacher, for you have learned much from one another these past few years. Shortly you shall say a few words that will take you across a threshold of life, and things between you will never quite be the same. For after today you shall say to the world – This is my husband. This is my wife.

You have etiquette questions. She has answers.

Invitations, flowers, dresses and menus and other decisions characterize wedding planning. Some choose simple and small and others prefer grand parties. But all of these seemingly small myriad decisions can muddle the real end goal. Challenges abound when engaged couples must make decisions regarding details both small and large. As an etiquette consultant, I teach both students and business professionals that simple consideration lies at the heart of good manners.

The first set of hurdles engaged couples encounter can be directly after the engagement itself. It’s important to notify immediate family of the engagement first. The couple should carefully consider whether to tell immediate family together or separately, keeping in mind that some family members might have doubts or questions. If this is the case, listen to their concerns, stay calm and try to answer in the best way possible. Remember that it’s natural for families to have different perspectives Pushback is normal and natural. Stay calm and stay kind.

After families have been notified, the couple should take time to sit down and consider when they’d like to marry. Communicate with each other and both sets of parents on who will pay for what. Set a budget. Make sure to communicate to one another any parts of the ceremony or reception for which one might have ideas or preferences. For example, one person might want to splurge on the food instead of lots of flowers. Decide which decisions merit financial priority and which do not.

In our modern society couples now have the freedom to plan and execute a wedding day that reflects their own style. Budget and chosen venue might help define one’s parameters a bit, but it is possible to put on a wedding that reflects your individuality while staying within a budget. Couples should, however, keep guests in mind when choosing venue and attire. Guests and members of the wedding party will be spending their own money to attend the wedding, so considering them is kind.

Those invited to the wedding in turn should do their best to be good guests. An invitation to a wedding whether it’s a mailed, emailed, or open invitation in the local newspaper is an honor. A wedding marks a milestone in a family’s history and should be viewed with respect and reverence. Dress appropriately for the time of the wedding and factor in time needed to park and walk to the venue. Remember that most couples hire professional photographers to document the ceremony. Please turn phones off or on silent so as not to distract. Gifts can be sent before or after the ceremony, but avoid bringing a gift to the event. Newly married couples tend to leave straightaway for the honeymoon. Gifts at the ceremony could prove a complication, albeit well-meant.

Whether you find yourself on the planning side or attending side, most etiquette questions can be answered by asking oneself what action would put others’ needs above oneself. Good manners are after all just that: considering the feelings of others above one’s own. In a society that tends to encourage the selfish and petty always strive for love and consideration.

A Southern wedding shower is not just a celebration—it's an expression of warmth, love, and creativity. From playful themes to cost-effective solutions, planning a memorable event requires a mix of thoughtful touches and savvy decision-making. Here’s your guide to throwing a fabulous wedding shower that’s as charming as it is practical.

Overcoming Oversized Expectations

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the pressure to host a grand, over-the-top celebration. But take heart—the days of intimate and tasteful wedding showers with close friends and family are not lost. In fact, there’s a certain nostalgia in embracing simplicity and charm, where heartfelt moments and meaningful conversations take center stage. Sometimes, less truly is more.

Choosing Fun Themes

Themed showers are a staple in the South, and choosing one that resonates with the couple's personality adds a layer of intimacy to the celebration. Popular ideas include “Southern Charm” with monogrammed décor and sweet tea stations, “Backyard Barbecue” for a casual vibe, or even “Around the Clock,” where guests bring gifts based on assigned times of day. Remember, Pinterest and Etsy are treasure troves for inspiration—think custom invites, unique décor, or handmade party favors to bring your vision to life.

Staying on Budget

While Southern hospitality is known for its grandeur, a wedding shower doesn’t have to break the bank. Start with a clear budget and prioritize must-haves For invitations, consider digital options like Evite or beautifully designed email templates, which save on both cost and postage. When it comes to décor, DIY centerpieces like mason jar flowers or rustic burlap accents can evoke Southern charm without draining your wallet.

Representing the Couple

The best wedding showers are those that reflect the couple's interests and personalities. Is the bride a book lover? Host a “Literary Love” shower with vintage books as decorations. Do they love traveling? Create a “Jet-Setters Shower” with travel-themed games and food from their favorite destinations. The goal is to make the day uniquely theirs while allowing the guests to enjoy the experience.

Managing Guest Count

Keeping the guest list reasonable not only makes the event more intimate but also more manageable. Start by consulting the bride and groom to ensure close friends and family are prioritized. A smaller gathering fosters meaningful connections and allows the host to focus on creating an unforgettable experience.

Cost-Affordable Ideas

Getting more bang for your buck is all about creativity. Host the shower at a free or low-cost .

location like your backyard, a local park, or someone’s living room. Instead of hiring a caterer, organize a potluck where guests bring a favorite dish. This saves money while adding a personal touchFor favors, think simple yet meaningful: homemade jam, mini succulents, or personalized candles are all affordable crowd-pleasers.

Expectations of the Host

As the host, your role goes beyond planning—you’re the conductor of this joyful orchestra. Ensure the invitations are sent out well in advance, communicate any special instructions (like themed attire), and coordinate with the couple to make sure the event feels authentic to them. On the day of the shower, greet guests warmly, keep the schedule running smoothly, and be prepared to assist with any lastminute hiccups.

Host Etiquette and Splitting Costs

As a host, it’s important to embody the gracious and generous spirit that makes Southern hospitality so beloved. This means keeping the couple’s preferences front and center while ensuring guests feel welcome. Hosting can also come with financial responsibilities, but sharing costs with co-hosts or friends can help lighten the load. Simple apps like Splitwise make it easy to divide and track expenses, ensuring everyone contributes their fair share without awkwardness. Clear communication about shared costs ahead of time keeps the planning process smooth and stress-free.

Food Ideas with a Southern Twist

No Southern wedding shower is complete without a delectable spread. Consider serving finger foods like mini chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits bites, or pimento cheese sliders. Sweet treats like pecan pie bars, red velvet cupcakes, and sweet tea or lemonade are a must. A grazing table with local cheeses, fruits, and crackers is another elegant yet simple option.

Invitations That Set the Tone

Your invitations are the first impression of the shower. Whether you opt for traditional paper invitations or digital ones, make sure they match the theme and clearly convey important details, such as the date, time, location, and any special instructions (like bringing a favorite recipe to share). Sites like Canva or Etsy offer customizable templates that can be tailored to your event.

Adding the Final Touches

Don’t forget the little extras that make a big impact, like a photo booth with props for fun memories or personalized thank-you notes for guests. Games like Southern trivia or “Guess the Love Story” provide entertainment and keep the atmosphere lively. With a mix of thoughtful planning, budget-friendly creativity, and a splash of Southern charm, your wedding shower is sure to leave guests—and the happy couple—smiling. Let love and laughter rain down, y’all!

BUILDING A STRONG FINANCIAL FOUNDATION

FINANCIAL HARMONY

Building a strong financial foundation as newlyweds isn’t just about balancing the numbers— it’s about creating a life of shared dreams and stability. From merging incomes and expenses to aligning priorities, thoughtful financial planning allows couples to strengthen their bond while preparing for the future. A financial advisor can provide valuable insights, helping newlyweds navigate challenges such as debt management, long-term investments, and goal setting. By developing a cohesive financial strategy, couples can empower each other, turning their partnership into a confident journey toward financial independence and success.

Keith Lyle Jr., a Bainbridge local and Financial Advisor with Brannen and Lyle Investment Company, shared his expert insights and actionable strategies, offering newlyweds a dynamic roadmap to confidently navigate their financial future together.

Set Clear Financial Goals

“One of the best things newlyweds can do is sit down and talk about what they want life to actually look like—5, 10, 20 years from now,” says Lyle. “It’s not always an easy conversation, especially when you come from different financial backgrounds, but getting on the same page early helps turn your goals into a shared roadmap instead of a guessing game.”

Develop a Budget and Manage Debt

Every couple starts with unique financial histories. “A good budget isn’t just about balancing expenses—it’s about learning each other’s habits and priorities as well,” explains Lyle. “The goal isn’t to control each other, but to create a plan that reflects the life you want to build together.”

Save for Emergencies and the Future

Lyle emphasizes the importance of an emergency fund. “It’s a small step that makes a big difference. Knowing you have a financial safety net in place brings peace of mind and takes pressure off the relationship when life presents something unexpected.”

Financial Guidance for the Journey Ahead

“Marriage changes more than your name and address —it shifts how you plan, save, and make decisions together,” Lyle says. “A good advisor brings clarity to those changes, helps you focus on what matters most, and gives you the space to start asking the kinds of questions that help you feel more certain about what’s ahead.”

Keith Lyle Jr. is a Financial Advisor and Vice President at Brannen & Lyle Investment Company, a privately held advisory firm in Bainbridge, GA. With deep roots across the Southeast, Brannen & Lyle has a long history of guiding families, business owners, and communities with trusted financial expertise.

WHAT COMES AFTER, ‘I DO?’

Marriage is more than a ceremony — it’s a union of families and finances. When you and your partner are honest with each other about money and financial goals, it can help build trust, leverage your strengths and help pave the way for a financial happily ever after.

Since talking about money can be difficult, begin with conversations not so much about money itself but about the things that matter to you. You’ll find these are also your financial priorities and a good way to see if you’re on the same page, or how far apart you might be.

Here are a few conversation starters:

Make a list of short- and long-term goals — from buying a house to retiring early. Do you want children? Will one of you change careers or go back to school? See where your lists overlap and where some goals may be more important to one partner.

Ease into the financial implications. If you plan to grow your family, would one of you like to stop working or reduce your hours to provide child care? If more schooling is a priority, what kinds of changes might that require?

Share your feelings about money. How did your family treat money while you were growing up? What does money mean to you — security, freedom, stress or something else? Are you both spenders or savers, or is there one of each?

Before your big day, or early in your marriage, decide how you’ll blend your financial lives.

Fully disclose your current financial situation. Discuss each partner’s assets and debts and how, or if, you’ll combine them. There’s no one right answer — the key is for you both to agree. In nine community property states, all assets and debts are shared 50/50 after marriage regardless of individual or joint account status. Check to see whether yours is one of them.

Align on your budget and spending. This can empower you to spend within your means while moving toward your financial goals. Determine who will handle the various tasks of managing money. Who is responsible for which bills, who files the taxes and when will you consult each other on financial decisions like major purchases — a car, perhaps, or a major household appliance?

Once you're married, there are a few things to address right away. You may want to consult with financial, tax and legal professionals to help avoid pitfalls and identify opportunities.

Employer benefits. Newly married employees usually have a 30-day special enrollment period to update certain benefit elections — such as health and life insurance.

Adjust the W-4 tax withholding on your employee forms to reflect your marital status and ask your tax professional which tax-filing status makes sense for you.

Insurance policies. Combine and update policies and beneficiaries, including adding each other to auto insurance policies if you drive each other’s cars.

Estate documents. Now with a family, prepare for the unexpected. Create or update a will, medical directive, and financial and health care powers of attorney, and you may want to explore whether a revocable trust is appropriate.

Getting married is perhaps one of the most exciting times of your life. As you commit to a lifetime together, make sure that includes a financial commitment. By starting a habit of financial discussions now and returning to them periodically, you can help set yourselves up for a lifetime of financial compatibility, stability and freedom.

Buying a home as newlyweds is an exciting milestone, but it can also be a complex and overwhelming process. Misti Kelley of ERA Simpson, Lacey Shepherd of First & Main Real Estate Group, and Tyler Inlow of Premier Group Realty offer expert guidance to help couples make informed decisions and approach the journey with confidence. Laying the Foundation for a Smooth Home-Buying Process.

Guiding Newlyweds to Their Dream Home: Misti Kelley's Expert Advice

Lacey Shepherd emphasizes that securing preapproval from a lender is the critical first step in the process, giving buyers clear expectations about their purchasing power. Equally important is choosing a trusted realtor who provides informed advice and personalized assistance. Once the right professional is on board, they help clients navigate financial preparations, connect them with mortgage lenders, and conduct market research to identify properties within their target price range. With professional support and financial planning, Shepherd reassures buyers that purchasing a home can be stress-free and rewarding. "Building Love and Laying

Misti Kelley advises newlyweds to begin by finding the right realtor, someone they trust to guide them through financial preparations and ensure they get pre-approved for a mortgage. Once pre-approval is secured, couples should prioritize their needs and wants, creating a must-have list to help their realtor narrow down properties that align with their budget and lifestyle. A thorough evaluation of finances— including income, expenses, and debt—will clarify how much couples can comfortably spend on a home. With these foundational steps in place, a realtor can help identify suitable areas, negotiate offers, coordinate inspections, and manage paperwork to make the journey seamless.

Home Buying for Newlyweds: Tyler Inlow’s Expert Insights

Key Considerations for Newlyweds Buying a Home

Tyler Inlow highlights the importance of discussing whether to purchase a starter home or a forever home, a decision that shapes long-term financial and lifestyle goals. Newlyweds must also balance preferences with financial limitations, prioritizing what truly matters while staying within budget. Inlow outlines several factors to consider when selecting a home:

Location: Proximity to work, family, and amenities

Future Growth: Adequate space for children, pets, and evolving lifestyle changes

Resale Value: Long-term investment potential in a desirable area

Home Condition: The importance of inspections to avoid costly repairs

Additionally, Inlow warns against common mistakes such as skipping pre-approval, overlooking additional costs, rushing the process, and waiving inspections. He also highlights various loan options, including FHA, VA, USDA, and conventional loans, helping newlyweds make informed financial decisions.

The home-buying process includes several essential steps:

Get pre-approved for a mortgage

Find a trusted real estate agent

Search for homes within budget

Make an offer on a suitable property

Conduct a home inspection and appraisal

Finalize financing

Close on the home

With stabilizing mortgage rates and a wider selection of homes available, 2025 presents a great opportunity for newlyweds to invest in homeownership. However, strategic planning is crucial to ensure affordability and long-term financial stability. By carefully considering each step and working with a knowledgeable realtor, couples can navigate the process with ease and excitement.

While the home-buying journey may have its challenges, having a trusted guide makes all the difference. With thoughtful preparation and expert support, newlyweds can turn their dream home into a reality.

The Introduction

Ryan and I met at UGA! He was a passionate Tennessee fan, and I was equally devoted to FSU. Our shared love for college sports quickly became a fun connection.

The Proposal

Seaside is our favorite place, full of cherished memories. After a perfect day of running, strolling to lunch, visiting the farmers market, and enjoying happy hour, we walked back along the beach. At our usual stairs, a surprise awaited—champagne, flowers, and photos. He proposed, and our families, who had been hiding, joined us to celebrate. We ended the day with dinner surrounded by loved ones.

Setting the Date and Location

We debated between Bainbridge, St. Simons (Ryan's hometown), and ultimately chose the beach! The location played a key role in determining the date, and we decided on our favorite time to visit—during the off-season.

Favorite Details

The flowers were absolutely breathtaking, surpassing all expectations and perfectly complementing the intimate and comfortable atmosphere. Ryan's uncle officiated the ceremony, making it incredibly personal and heartfelt—an especially meaningful touch. From start to finish, the entire day was beyond anything I could have imagined.

Favorite Moments

Having a first look with my dad and then with Ryan was such a special experience. Both moments were incredibly sweet and emotional, and I’m so grateful I got to share those private, meaningful moments with them before the festivities began.

Advice for Other Brides

Try not to get bogged down in the tiny details. As cliché as it sounds, focus on enjoying the process and trust that everything will turn out beautifully Easier said than done, I know—haha!

The Introduction

Kyle and I grew up members of First Baptist Church in Bainbridge. We both went off to college and moved back home over time. Our paths crossed one Sunday leaving church in late 2023, and we instantly reconnected.

The Proposal

Kyle proposed in the most magical setting—my mother’s blooming backyard, where I had always loved to stroll among the camellias and azaleas. As we walked under the jasmine-covered arbor, I turned to find him on one knee with a ring, creating a surreal and unforgettable moment that felt like a dream come true.

Setting the Date and Location

After getting engaged in March, I decided on a ninemonth engagement, knowing a Christmas-time wedding would be lovely and provide just enough time for planning. Being from Bainbridge, we chose to marry at First Baptist Church, with the reception at The Simmons House, a new venue that perfectly fit our December vision.

Favorite Details

Some of my favorite wedding details included the beautiful Christmas trees, poinsettias, and bows decorating the venue, alongside touches of blue and white. From my grandmother's hand-painted wedding crest and invitations to Ashley Long live-painting our wedding portrait, and the mayhaw jelly favors made from my great-grandmother’s recipe, each element felt incredibly special and meaningful.

Favorite Moments

My favorite moment of our wedding day was right after the ceremony, when the photographer captured us outside the church at sunset. Kyle and I, now officially Mr. and Mrs. Wilkinson, took a quiet moment to soak it all in before heading to The Simmons House on the trolley.

The Proposal

Joe proposed to me after my first Turkey Trot. We were spending the rest of the Thanksgiving weekend at Santa Rosa Beach or as joe calls it “Beachgivin’s”. He proposed during sunset.

I wanted the date to be an angel number...222 signifies balance, harmony, and trust in God’s plan, encouraging you to focus on relationships and your inner voice.

Favorite Details

I wanted something different that truly reflected my personality. Everything about my day was perfect. I loved the colors, the disco balls, the second line, and food!

Favorite Moments

My wedding day began with a yoga class led by Patty Hamilton. I wore my veil and we sipped mimosas—a perfect way to start the day and remind myself to be mindful. Instead of a traditional exit, we embraced a New Orleans-inspired welcome second line. Members of the BHS band guided our guests around the circle driveway in front of the Simmons House, and my partner and I led them to the reception in the back. To add a fun twist, I ordered a gladiator sword for cutting the cake.
