From Transition to Transformation. A child’s education, like life itself, is a journey. At Pilot School, everything we do is to help
our students overcome their learning challenges so that they may engage in their own educational path — however and wherever it takes them. Our goal is to transition students into a traditional
academic environment when they are ready — preparing them with the tools of self-advocacy and skills, as well as the confidence and motivation to embrace and enjoy the learning experience as they move through the journeys of their lives.
This brochure is the story of Pilot School’s own recent journey. When the previous school building
was constructed in 1965, it was at the forefront of facilities designed to help children with learning
differences. In the five decades since, exponential growth in technology that provided new insights into the learning process created the need for a 21st century learning environment. The new Pilot School seamlessly combines the natural wonders of the surrounding 50-acre campus with the design elements of the building itself.
At last, the final vision for this new learning environment has been more than just realized. It has been transcended.
The new Pilot School is indeed a compelling, child-centered environment that integrates out-of-
doors learning experiences in a building that itself encourages students to incorporate awareness
of everything around them, from groundwater systems to woodlands and from movement to calm. Thinking, reasoning, observational and problem-solving skills are flourishing in the living,
breathing classrooms of woods, terraces, hills, and streams. Sensory experiences are vital to the interconnection of brain and body — they build engagement, connectedness, and a sense of belonging.
Having moved from a school building constructed decades ago to an innovative facility in the
midst of 50 acres of nature and woodlands, we weave together nature and nurture, flora and fauna, the natural wonder of children with the wisdom gleaned from leading research in maximizing learning effectiveness. Welcome to the Pilot School of today — and tomorrow.

From Our Director On a recent spring afternoon when all was quiet after school, I donned my boots and set out on one of the trails behind the school. The day’s busy events were soon crowded out by thoughts of the exciting challenges ahead. The first thing to jolt me out of my work mindset was the smell of the forest — not the visual awareness of being in the woods, but the sweet organic smell of leaves, sticks, and the dark humid earth. Inspired, I paused to allow all of my senses to be engaged. I looked around at the trees and vegetation that were the source of those forest smells. I heard birds chirping and felt breezes that caused plants and trees to sway. I reached the ridge connecting two incredibly different rock formations where Rocky Run and Hurricane Run streams converge. This ridge, created thousands of years ago during the Ice Age, is a natural phenomenon and teaching tool — a place where history, geography, and geology intersect. Deep breaths brought peaceful feelings and a reminder about the importance of nature in our lives. Today, recalling that calming late afternoon experience, I think about the research that establishes our genetic connection to nature, as shared by journalist, author, and nature advocate Richard Louv. A featured guest and speaker at our School Opening in November, he emphasized how stress and poor health can result if our connection to nature becomes disrupted. Exposure to nature encourages the release of hormones that improve outlook and the availability to learn by lowering levels of stress and fear. With such magnificent opportunities for integrative learning throughout our campus, I am excited to see Pilot’s teachers creating experiences that reflect the wealth of new ways to learn and teach discovered through 21st century technology and research. Now that the dream of this new campus has been realized, my excitement is tinged with a mix of emotions as I realize that it’s time for a personal transition. I am leaving my role as director as of August 1 and passing the torch to Alix Kokkoris, who has been part of the Pilot family for 15 years, first as teacher and most recently as Head of the Lower Division. I am thrilled that Alix has accepted this position, and I look forward to working with her as a volunteer. Pilot has been part of my life for 40 years, and it will remain so as I concentrate my focus on strategic initiatives and fundraising. How thankful all of us at Pilot are to the many people and foundations who provided financial support to make our vision a reality. Because of your belief in our mission and your generous support, children who benefit from the specialized education at Pilot School have endless opportunities for independence and success. Thank you, from the depths of all of our hearts,
Kathleen B. Craven, Director 2
From Our Board President I can’t tell you how proud I am to be a part of this “new” school. Proud of not just the new physical plant and environs but of the new spirit that permeates the school. Students, teachers, staff, and the board have been invigorated by the long-anticipated move. You can sense it when walking in the door. I equate the feeling to receiving an unexpectedly high estimate on Antiques Road Show — you just want to say, “Wow!” And, you want to keep saying it as you walk around watching the kids trying not to run (for joy) through the halls and gazing out at the always new panorama of nature and light that surrounds them. The changes won’t cease with the move. As everyone is adapting to our new environment so, too, the board and staff will be looking at expanded programming and opportunities that this platform offers, all imbued with that unique Pilot spirit and approach. Enjoy reading this tribute to our new school and future,
H. Rodney Scott, President, Pilot School Board of Trustees

Every Detail Drives Our Purpose Every detail of the new building and campus was intentionally designed based upon 21st century insights into how the brain learns.
Every member of the team — from architects to builders to site engineers and landscape professionals — understood, accepted, and exceeded the challenge to create an interactive, multi-sensory learning environment that integrates what is happening inside and outside the building.
Lesson plans link content learned in the classroom with the virtually boundless information available through the Internet and other technologies with experiential, hands-on learning in nearby fields and streams.
4
Wings were built with different size hallways to better fit the children using them. Furniture was selected to move naturally with children, to improve focus and attention rather than detract from it.
Even details such as angling exterior windows to optimize natural light and direct the eye towards the most inspirational views were carefully thought out and implemented.
Rooms were designed for optimum flexibility to engage children with novelty and to adapt to new uses and configurations as needs change and evolve.

After so many years of planning, evaluation, fundraising, design, and construction, the official first school day in our new home took place on November 14, 2016. And the transformation of our learning experience, and our students’ lives, continues to take place...every day.
With its innovative, child-centered design, Pilot School offers many new opportunities, including the benefit of increased flexibility and new connections to nature and the surrounding world. Students can experience lessons with new opportunities to touch, feel, and see ideas that were not previously available to them! Excitement seems to course through their veins as they approach each and every new experience. Students beam with pride, eager to show off their school and the great and unique qualities that the facilities and campus have to offer. It truly is a place like no other. –Casey Cline, Teacher

We can say when one door closed, another glorious door opened. It feels as though our new doors and vast windows are operating as openings for unlimited ideas and possibilities in both teaching and learning. Pilot School has always been about unlocking the potential, but the new surroundings give the sense that the potential has expanded and may just be unlimited. The Pilot Way continues to be a wondrous way of learning and growing. –Susan Stewart, Teacher
Historically, Pilot has always had the mission and faculty skill set to ensure a fabulous education to learning challenged students. With this new facility and campus, the school integrates cutting-edge technology, leading-edge teaching, and a holistic approach combining nature, nurture, and the findings of neuroscience to afford each individual student the best opportunity to excel and realize his or her potential. –Andy Jefferson, Board Member and Pilot Parent
Driving onto this amazing campus every morning is motivating, inspiring, and peaceful all at the same time. Driving up at night is, in a word, magical. In the Art Studio, a glass wall with shelving holds both works in progress and finished masterpieces. Spotlighting illuminates these shelves for a gallery-like viewing experience. Students and staff take pride in this amazing building in which every element was designed to alleviate distraction and aid in creating a peaceful learning environment. The new school building makes teaching here, and learning here, a true joy. –Ruth Sklut, Art Teacher
Light: Situated to capture maximum hours of daylight, the building features large windows in classrooms and hallways to bring calming views of nature and beneficial natural light from the outside in.
7
Water: Water is necessary for life and the school and campus were designed to integrate the various water systems inside and out, including the green roof, rain gardens, storm water management and pond-band ecosystem. By observing our water system cycles, students learn to respect and appreciate this vital resource.
This new school home has been transformative in the way teaching and learning take place at Pilot. As of August 1, my own role will be transformed as I transition into the position of director. I am both humbled and honored to be chosen for this position, and I will be guided by the legacy of the dedicated educators who filled this role before me, Kathy Craven and Doris LeStourgeon. I thank the Board of Trustees for their confidence and look forward to the ongoing support of the entire Pilot family as we move forward into the future. –Alexandra Kokkoris, Division Head, Lower Division
When my son John enters the building, he always does so at a run. He cannot wait to be greeted by all the staff waiting at the doors to wish him good morning by name. John says, “It’s awesome!” and “The pool is one of a kind. It makes you feel good. The OT and PT helps you feel better.” We are positive that this school is the place for John. –Kim Kuhl, Pilot Parent and John Kuhl, Pilot Student, Age 10
8
Energy: A key consideration was to significantly reduce the building footprint and energy consumption while maintaining a high degree of aesthetics and functionality. Highly insulated walls combined with energyefficient windows, heating, cooling and ventilation are expected to reduce energy usage by 30 percent.
When touring the new building and campus, we were struck by the way the environment envelops everyone who enters with a warm and welcoming feeling. The lobby’s enormous boulders and homey fireplace serve as a gathering space for the children before, during, and after school. It feels like an extension of home — a safe place to be yourself and be treated with kindness and understanding. Every single brick seems to echo Pilot’s mission of caring deeply for each child as an individual. As we left our tour, Brad mentioned how lucky the children were to have such a magical place. –Trina and Brad Hendrixson, Former Pilot Parent and Student.
As I move around the country, spreading the word about the importance of connecting children and ourselves to the natural world, I’ve visited countless schools. Now and then I walk into a school and have an almost visceral thought: “I wish my sons, now 29 and 34, could have gone to this school.” Pilot School is one of the best. While much of the education world has drifted away from nature, Pilot teaches not to the test, but to the whole child. –Richard Louv, author of “Last Child in the Woods,” “The Nature Principle,” and “Vitamin N”

A View of the Numbers: Financials from August 1, 2016 to July 31, 2017 At Pilot, we are proud that we are currently able to devote 83 percent of all revenues to academic programming. With energy savings and an anticipated boost in enrollment allowed by the larger school facility, we hope that we can increase that percentage in the very near future. As always, we recognize that our donors make it possible for our students to enjoy the very highest caliber of individualized education and attention, and our appreciation knows no bounds. Our sincere thanks to everyone who supports the vision and values of The Pilot School. We couldn’t do what we do — or be where we are — without you. We Appreciate Our Donors. Every Day.
Without the generosity of donors to our Annual Fund and our Capital Campaign, the view would be bleak indeed. n There would be no new school building nor campus to celebrate. There would be no way to compensate for the difference in tuition vs. actual cost to educate. n Thanks to you, our initial vision has become our daily view. And it is both inspirational and transformational.
