Kalawi Farms You Say ‘Allman’, We say ‘Auman.’ For 80 years, “Eat a peach” meant a visit to the Auman orchards in West End. The family closed it all down this year — the end of an era — but there’s plenty of places to pull over for the reddish golden orbs, especially Kalawi Farms off NC 211 in Eagle Springs. At Kalawi, you can eat a peach in a freshly crafted waffle cone when you give their homemade peach ice cream a whirl. Get your cone to

Vito’s Ristorante & Pizzeria Vito and Frank Gironda are two of four brothers who over the years have been wowing Moore County with traditional dishes as well as specialties from their home in Calabria. Vito works the front of the house, while Frank makes the magic happen in the kitchen, whether that’s prosciutto-wrapped cantaloupe wedges, rigatoni with zucchini and tomatoes picked fresh that day from the backyard garden or penne all’ inferno. Careful, because this dish has native Calabrian peppers spicier than a roster of young Italian dudes in a Martin Scorsese film. At Vito’s you’re famiglia. In addition to full sized cakes, specialty cakes and wedding cakes, the Brunners also make nine different special individual desserts. Beefeater’s A locally owned and operated favorite, Beefeaters has been serving beef eaters for more than 20 years. It’s also a favorite retreat for local groups and golfers because of the menu. Owner Tammy Waterbury has kept all the signature dishes, the incredible salad bar and desserts, while answering the perennial question, “Where’s the beef?”. They have choices for other tastes (try fried catfish bites) as well, all at reasonable prices. So, you can afford to go back! 672 SW Broad St., Southern Pines (910) 692-5550 www.beefeatersofsouthernpines.com

The Jefferson Inn There is such a cool factor with The Jefferson Inn. It’s old and new, blended together with a great touch. It’s old because the building has been there for a long time, new because it got a retro fit a few years back. The bar area is old wood, the floors are wood. There are nice decorative touches throughout. Then there is the patio, which is one of the coolest little spots in town to listen to live music. It’s open and airy, but a privacy fence around it makes a great backdrop for some really solid bands that come through Thursday through Saturday nights. 150 W New Hampshire Ave., Southern Pines (910) 692-9911 www.jeffersoninnsouthernpines.com
