Designing Effective Pilates Programs For Athletes
ASK YOURSELF IF WHAT YOU ARE TRAINING YOUR ATHLETES ON WILL HAVE A POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THEIR PERFORMANCE
by Jamie Isacc
The simple answer to approaching designing Pilates programs for training athletes is to begin with the simple task to “give them Pilates” And yes, I know that feels like we’re over simplifying, but if in doubt, don’t be surprised on how effective keeping it simple can be
One of the things I have noticed when working with athletes over the years, has been that simplicity is often the key to success They may be strong, agile and healthy on first impressions, but a more detailed look will reveal that they are often strong yet lacking in connection to their core or powerhouse Therefore, an initial focus on powerhouse engagement and connecting their movement from their core is a great place to begin This is the start of many aspects needed for elite performance such as injury prevention/ recovery, efficient and effective motor patterns, and this all leads to improved performance
The next observation is how they often are compensating in
movement and motor patterning from years of one-sided actions For example just take a moment to look at their throwing technique, fighting stance, board riding stance (my favourite!), or predominant sides with racquets, bats, or even preferred legs for kicking balls of all varieties and shapes They all create compensatory movement patterns and imbalanced muscle development which increases the likelihood of injury and certainly future issues post competitive career
That being said, our role as Pilates teachers, with our overly tuned eye for hawkish detail does also need addressing When training athletes it’s important to stop and ask ourselves if what we are training will have a positive or negative impact on their performance. It’s not as simple as just following our usual protocols and developing well balanced humans We should ask ourselves if the imbalance is a needed element of skill execution for the actions in their field of sport
Photography Pilates Anytime
“It’s not as following ou and developi humans. W ourselves if th needed el execution fo their fie
Photography Pilates Anytime
With this in mind, I would suggest that our focus is on making the imbalanced movement as safe as possible and maximizing our athlete’s longevity For this having some rehab or prehab (injury prevention exercises) in our tool box can be useful
Much of this will also depend on where our athlete is on their career Are we building a powerful and agile performer in the early stages of their pursuit, or are we supporting an established athlete towards career longevity? As always, considering our athletes with regard to their individual and unique journey and goals will determine the program we design
With so much to consider, this article can only scratch the surface of all we can discuss, so for now, I’d like to share a few exercises that I use with a variety of athletes for a variety of reasons and then encourage you all to explore and research in relation to your own athletes
Skill Acquisition & Execution
An area that can be a whole lot of fun, is to review our athlete’s specific movement patterns and train them towards better skill acquisition or execution
I love looking at traditional exercises and playing with the rhythm or timing to make the muscles fire in a more relative way, or even playing with direction and load to get the same effect. Check this exercise out for an example: Here I’m considering a fighter By introducing this push and pull action we can work towards either a rolling motion (push) working contra to a pull action to develop power in throwing opponents. This can also be changed slightly to build oppositional force when throwing a punch
Rehab/ Prehab
Each athlete is unique, but there are commonalities It’s often Knees, hips, shoulders and backs that are first to ask for attention Yes, they can all be from different causes, such as impact trauma (think most often contact or extreme sports), or simply over/misuse Either way, great ways to build back stronger or prevent in the first place can be found in these gems
Lower back support through Glute engagement and Shoulder Stability
Life is rarely even
Often our athletes are not performing on a level playing field Even sports like gymnastics can leave our performers needing to adapt to a previous error that changes a take off from a different part of the mat, trampoline or springboard. So, building a body that can adapt in the moment can be as simple as training muscles to react
A great way to play with balance whilst maintaining stability throughout can be this version of leg circles Here we’re only placing load on one leg. You can use either the reformer, or experiment on the Cadillac
Finally Feet
Often overlooked but an absolute gamechanger is to begin with the feet Whatever your sport, our feet are often the first point of contact with the playing field, apparatus or board we are riding They are the first to react to the change in the playing surface, and therefore by training these and showing our feet some love, we
can better prepare ourselves for success Strong articulate arches and agile toes are a great way to begin Here’s my go to foot favourite
In conclusion, designing Pilates programs for athletes is a nuanced and dynamic process that begins with simplicity but evolves through careful observation and thoughtful adjustments By focusing on core connection, addressing compensatory patterns, and tailoring exercises to both the athlete’s current career stage and unique needs, we can empower them to perform at their best while minimizing injury risk With a mindful approach and a willingness to adapt, we not only help our athletes excel in their sport but also contribute to their longevity and overall wellbeing, proving the incredible value of Pilates in athletic training

Dust Off Your Pilates Barrels
DISCOVER THE VERSATILITY OF PILATES BARRELS AND HOW THEY UNLOCK SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR TOUGHEST EXERCISES WITH EASE, CONNECTION, AND CREATIVITY
byLesleyLogan, NCPT,Co-FounderofOPC
When I first started teaching I noticed most Spine Correctors were under a Cadillac or resting against a wall gathering some dust From time to time they'd get pulled out to use for an Arm Series or even as a prop for someone who needed help curling up Yet in my training manuals there were so many exercises you could do! In fact, the more I nerded out on my Spine Corrector and other Barrels, the more I realized that many exercises we struggle with there was a Barrel for that!
Struggling with extension? The Arm Series on the Spine Corrector should be your best friend!
Pelvis tipping back and forth when you move your legs? The Leg Series on the Spine Corrector or Small Barrel has plenty of variations to help you figure out where to move from
Short Box on the Reformer gripping your hip flexors? The Ladder Barrel wants to help!
What exercises are you struggling with? There really is a Barrel exercise or three that can set you up for the exercises you want to do
Add to that the fun story Jay Grimes, my teacher and one of Joe Pilates students, told me: When a client comes in flustered or stressed, the Arm Series on the Spine Corrector was a great place to start Why? Because it's a breathing exercise that helps connect a client's mind, body, and breath By the time they're done with the Hug then they're ready to hit their Mat or Reformer!
It's so easy in Pilates to lean into one apparatus more than another I mean, when's the last time you did an exercise you didn't like? I tell my clients, “If you don't like an exercise, it's because you need it.” Jay would tell us, “If someone doesn't like an exercise, they should do it twice ”
When I set out to create the Barrels Flashcards as the 5th deck in the OnlinePilatesClasses com series (there will be 6 decks total), I wanted to make sure that every exercise was represented And, that every Pilates level could explore the exercises right for them
Most people are told exercises can be done on a Spine Corrector or Small Barrel but not always shown, so it was important to me that the Spine Corrector and Small Barrel had their own separate cards. The Ladder Barrel is most known for its Stretches series, but there are so many ways to use it! And, if you know the proper way to measure the Ladder Barrel for your body, then you can get the most out of it Which is why we were intentional on the "How to Use this Deck" card. You'll see the way to measure for any body
The C-Shaper is also included in the Barrels deck I know it's not a common piece of Pilates equipment. But if the Spine Corrector, Small Barrel, and Ladder Barrel teach extension the best, the C Shaper teaches flexion the best After all, it's literally the inverse curve of the Ladder Barrel!
But, really, when we encounter exercises we aren't loving or are struggling with, it is because we are missing a connection We don't yet have the strength And, so it's not really another cue that we need… It's often that we need to train our body with another exercise If you're constantly using your neck for Swan instead of your upper back, having the barrel behind your spine helps you understand where to articulate You get feedback!
The thing about all the Barrels is that they can be what you need them to be They can teach you or challenge you They can be the workout or part of the workout And the more you play with the exercises on them, leaving out what you're not ready for, the more the rest of your practice will benefit!
Now, I know it is easy to look at the Barrels included in this deck and think they're not like yours Or that they're classical and so they won't work for you But, every OPC flashcard deck is edited by a non-classical teacher and a non-Pilates practitioner. In fact, the non-Pilates editor reached out to buy her own Spine Corrector after reviewing the cards!
Got an Arc? You'll be able to use this deck! You'll see you can use the step or remove it Don't have a C-Shaper? That's ok! It's only a dozen of the 114+ cards in the deck and someday you'll come across someone's dusty C-Shaper and you'll be able to use it!
This deck is designed to help you use the Pilates system to support your practice and your clients’ practice It’s designed to move you around your Pilates studio and warm up or cool down on the Barrel apparatus with ease and curiosity
Other fun features to check out are that each card has a QR code that takes you to the video of the exercise. Then, on the other side of the card, you've got the Set Up, Action and other complementary Barrel exercises You also have related Mat and Reformer exercises so you don't have to guess at how all the exercises can work together. Plus a quick tip from me!
Put cards out in different stations for clients to enjoy a circuit class Or, pull them out to plan a client session, or even yours! Take a picture of the cards and you've got a visual of the planned workout!
Get this beast of a deck (it really is the largest we'll ever make) at OnlinePilatesClasses.com or in Australia @PilatesNerdDownUnder or in Canada @b.pilatesandfitness where you will find all 5 of our Flashcard decks (Mat, Reformer, Cadillac/Tower, Chairs and Barrels).

Harmony in Motion: Integrating Pilates and the GYROTONIC® Method
EXPLORE THE TRANSFORMATIVE GYROTONIC® METHOD A FUSION OF DANCE, YOGA, AND FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT THAT REVITALIZES THE BODY AND MIND
by Suzanne McCarty
Ever heard of the GYROTONIC® method? In the world of movement and exercise, the Gyrotonic Method stands out as a unique and transformative system that offers a fresh approach to physical well-being Developed by Romanian-born Hungarian Juliu Horvath, a former principal ballet dancer, this method combines the fluidity and grace of dance with principles from yoga, gymnastics, swimming, and other disciplines The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®, which includes the Gyrotonic Method and GYROKINESIS® movement methods, is designed to address the entire body, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, and increasing the range of motion Rhythmic, flowing movement sequences create functional strength without jarring or compressing the joints
As someone who has spent my lifetime deeply immersed in the world of movement, I have found a profound connection with the Gyrotonic Method Before moving back to Australia, I lived for 20 years in Vienna, Austria, where I was a professional ballet
dancer for 12 years and a movement trainer for eight years My journey into the world of Pilates began there, where I became a second-generation Classical Pilates Teacher under the tutelage of Romana Kryzanoswka a transformative experience that not only rehabilitated my injured knee but also provided me with a new career path and the courage to step away from ballet, a career I had left behind just six months prior.
My journey with the Gyrotonic Method began serendipitously In 2001, I was introduced to it by Michelle Cross, the owner of a Pilates and Gyrotonic Method studio in Vienna, where I worked as a Pilates instructor While I loved Pilates, I missed the joy, freedom, and flow that dance brought to my life Practising the Gyrotonic Method filled that void, and I eagerly completed my first GYROKINESIS® teacher training with Juliu Horvath himself in 2002
Now, as a Gyrotonic Method and GYROKINESIS® Master Trainer and the owner of Hara Beyond Movement Studio in Northern NSW
Australia, I've seen firsthand the transformative power of this method For me, the Gyrotonic Method is not just another form of exercise but a complementary practice that enhances and enriches my Pilates teaching.
While Pilates provides a grounded, straightforward, and precise movement system that aligns the skeleton through push-and-pull dynamics, the Gyrotonic Method delves deeper into the body layers It requires more concentration and patience, allowing practitioners to feel and sense the technique fully before advancing to more complex exercises The Gyrotonic Method emphasises holistic, whole-body motion, encouraging connectivity throughout the body and limbs The method's spirals and intricacies create space in the joints, allowing motion to pass through the entire chain and enhancing fluid core movement through integrated motion. This, in turn, increases strength, flexibility, energy, vitality, and a general sense of calm and wellbeing
Many clients describe their experiences with the Gyrotonic Method as remarkably profound They often express surprise at how something that feels so relaxing can significantly impact their posture and movement My clients frequently tell me that you must experience it to understand the power of what it does to your body
I believe Pilates and the Gyrotonic Method can be seen as the yin and yang of movement for the body. Pilates offers structure and efficiency, with its straightforward exercises providing quick results It is accessible to most people, making it an excellent starting point for anyone looking to improve their
“While I loved Pilates, I missed the joy, freedom, and flow that dance brought to my life. Practising the GYROTONIC® method filled that void,”
physical health On the other hand, the Gyrotonic Method offers a more intricate and exploratory approach It challenges the body in new ways, encouraging a deeper energetic connection and awareness of one's physical form.
One of the key benefits of the Gyrotonic Method is its adaptability The method's specialised equipment, such as the Pulley Tower Handle Unit, GYROTONER®, Jumping Stretching Board, Leg Extension Unit, and ARCHWAY™, all move the body in different ways and can be customised to suit any person's unique physique and ability The equipment feels more like a support system, allowing you to find the motion rather than pushing and over-tensing This versatility makes the Gyrotonic Method accessible to everyone, from elite athletes to individuals recovering from injury or living with a disability The GYROKINESIS® Method, which can be practised without equipment, further enhances this adaptability, as it relies on the practitioner's proprioception to explore the movement sequences
My teaching is a mosaic, where each method adds a unique colour, creating a rich and vibrant whole Just as a mosaic is more beautiful with distinct colours, my teaching shines when I acknowledge and celebrate the unique contributions of Pilates and the Gyrotonic Method, each complementing the other
I encourage Pilates instructors to explore the Gyrotonic Method and consider adding this modality to their toolkit. The Gyrotonic Method offers a unique opportunity to expand one's movement practice, providing a competitive edge and the chance to reach new audiences The method's emphasis on holistic movement,
alignment, and the creation of space within the body offers profound benefits that can enhance any teaching practice The system has intricate hands-on and movement principles that can take you and your clients to new experiences and can help to reengage clients for the long term
In conclusion, the Gyrotonic Method has enriched my own life and teaching practice in countless ways It complements my Pilates practice, offering a different yet harmonious approach to movement Whether you are a Pilates instructor, a student, a physio, an osteopath, a massage therapist, or simply someone interested in exploring new ways of moving, I invite you to experience the Gyrotonic Method for yourself. It is a journey worth taking that promises to expand your horizons and deepen your connection to your body
Suzanne offers Pilates training, Classical Pilates training and GYROKINESIS® and GYROTONIC® teacher trainings yearly For more information on upcoming teacher training courses, visit Hara Beyond Movement Studio.

Pilates for Tension Headaches
In 2023, a group of researchers conducted a series of case studies to look at the effect of Pilates on tension-type headaches (TTH). TTH and migraine, according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders, are the third and sixth most common diseases in the world TTH is most common in adults, affecting 30 to 78% of the population over a lifetime, but this percentage varies worldwide. It can be said that this disorder is a public health problem due to the high prevalence and the fact that there is a high impact on one’s quality of life, as the unpredictable pain causes functional limitations and a decrease in productivity. Thus, the aim of this study was to verify the impact of clinical Pilates exercises on pain intensity, impact headaches, neck disability, state of anxiety, depression, stress, and quality of sleep The specific goals of the clinical Pilates program designed by the researchers were: improve the movement pattern, particularly of the cervical spine and shoulder girdle; raise awareness of good posture to prevent further TTH episodes; and promote muscular and psychological relaxation
The subjects of this study were 9 university students in Portugal (80% female) between the ages of 21 and 27 who suffered from TTH Each subject did only four 30-minute sessions of mat Pilates for over 2 weeks. Upon completion of the Pilates program, pain intensity decreased in only 2 of the 9 subjects However, all subjects improved regarding the impact of TTH on normal daily life and the ability to function; and only one did not show improvement in functional disability caused by pain in the cervical region Six subjects reported improvement in psychological state (in regard to stress, anxiety, and depression), and only one reported a lower quality of sleep
Based on these results, the authors concluded that a clinical Pilates exercise program can induce positive effects on disorders associated with TTH They propose that clinical Pilates is a good
option for a therapeutic approach that focuses on increasing the strength and stability of the deep muscles, particularly in the cervical region. As we have seen in other studies (Moffet and McLean 2006, Jull et al 2002, Mahmood et al 2022) increased strength and stability of these deep cervical muscles ensures that the superficial muscles are not used as compensation This creates better muscle balance, which reorganizes motor control strategies thereby protecting the cervical spine and helping one adapt to pain

Changing the way the world works out
INSIDE STUDIO PILATES: THE FOUNDERS' MISSION TO TRANSFORM A MILLION LIVES
by CJ Zarb
With more than two decades in the Pilates industry, Studio Pilates founders Jade and Tanya Winter have carved out their niche in the world of Pilates What began as a single Brisbane studio, where they worked tirelessly together often clocking 70-80 hours a week instructing private and semi-private classes has grown into one of the largest Pilates franchises in Australia and beyond “We started like every other independent operator,” Jade shares “We were in business for seven years before we even thought about scaling But when we did, we realised the importance of creating a scalable model that could be easily replicated ”
With a deep commitment to Pilates and ambitions to grow, Jade and Tanya realised that the traditional semi-private model they operated wasn’t sustainable long-term for them “In semi-privates, if two clients cancel, you lose the revenue for that class so we knew there had to be a better way,” Jade explains. They both admired the level of personalisation the semi-private format allowed, but they also recognised how demanding it was for
instructors and the difficulty in achieving consistent revenue. “We have often seen that the burnout rate for independent operators is high It’s tough when you’re delivering most of the classes on your schedule,” he notes
Their turning point came in 2009, when the couple travelled to fitness hubs like Los Angeles, London, and New York Inspired by the potential of group reformer classes, they knew it was time to reinvent their delivery methods. Jade and Tanya worked tirelessly to develop Studio Pilates TV (SPTV), a groundbreaking tool that supports instructors while enhancing client experiences “We spent years creating manuals, just on the craft of instructing,” Jade explains. “With television screens and an audio guide helping deliver reformer workouts, our instructors don’t have to cue every move They can focus on tailoring the experience to the clients in front of them,” Jade adds This system freed instructors from repetitive cueing, allowing them to make classes more engaging and personal
As they grew Studio Pilates, Jade and Tanya learned that crafting effective workouts involved thoughtful choices about what exercises to include and exclude. “Our secret sauce is about the exercises we leave out,” Jade explains “We’ve taught all the exercises, but about 1 percent of our clients could handle the advanced ones For us, it’s about ensuring the majority can stick with the practice, see results, and keep coming back. At a granular level, it means we focus on modifying and advancing exercises by use of the spring tension, again keeping it simple for our clients and instructors ” This selective approach reflects the founders’ commitment to accessibility and client retention, allowing for safe, progressive development for clients of all fitness levels
Building on this commitment, Jade and Tanya’s vision expanded as they recognised the potential to make the Studio Pilates model accessible to people outside the fitness industry “We’re passionate about Pilates We believe more people should be able to access it,” Jade shares Their mission was not only to bring Pilates to more clients but also to empower people from diverse backgrounds to own their studios “For someone from a corporate background, we give them the skills to break into the industry and have ownership of a business,” he explains
This mission of inclusivity has driven Studio Pilates’ impressive growth Their role in onboarding and supporting franchisees has been crucial, with their hands-on guidance ensuring that new owners feel equipped to succeed After three years of rigorous testing and refinement, they were ready to share the Studio Pilates model more broadly “We didn’t franchise it straight away we did three years of road testing because we wanted it to be the best it could be,” Jade recalls Today, with 110+ studios and over 60 more in the pipeline, they’re expanding across Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Canada, and the U S , with Switzerland and Ireland to follow in 2025
Central to their vision is what Jade and Tanya call the “million people plan ” “We have our million people plan it’s our vision for our business Our goal is to have a million people per week changing their lives through the Studio Pilates service,” Jade explains Reaching this ambitious milestone will require us to develop a global network of 2,000 studios Jade who has been instrumental in designing the centralised systems that make Studio Pilates franchise-friendly, emphasises the importance of simplicity in scaling “To do that, we need to keep things simple,” he says “We streamlined the teaching, training, and operations so our franchisees can focus on delivering the best client experience ” This simplicity extends to centralised marketing efforts, which allow franchisees to focus on their studios while Studio Pilates handles much of the promotional work Their plan is bold, but Jade and Tanya are confident that, with their streamlined model, they’re setting a foundation that can reach millions of clients worldwide
The founders emphasise the importance of preparing and supporting instructors as a core part of their business. “Our best instructors are our customers,” Jade notes, explaining that many of the franchisees were once loyal clients And it’s our ability to train world-class instructors and provide them with support is central to our success,” he says.
As Studio Pilates continues to grow, Jade and Tanya have crafted a model that combines innovation, accessibility, and community impact. “We’re here to change the way the world works out,” Jade reflects From a single studio to a thriving global network, their journey reflects a dedication to the transformative power of Pilates
“Our secret sauce is about the exercises we leave out... [we] make the Studio Pilates model accessible to people outside the fitness industry”
At its’ core – Pilates and P heal
HOW PILATES
by Louise Ta
How often do y teach a pelvic fl usually towards lift and relax inc those that have
At its’ core, we referred to as th including the ab we talk about th floor The Pelvic decrease in intr create a better functioning pelvic floor, especially if there is stress incontinence (leaking with a cough or a sneeze) For someone who has a weakened pelvic floor we must choose exercises that create less intra-abdominal pressure until pelvic floor strength and control is gained In this article we discuss why the Pelvic floor is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly.
Pilates offers several benefits for pelvic floor health, primarily through its focus on core strength and body awareness Here’s how Pilates can positively impact the pelvic floor:
1.
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles located at the base of the pelvis, forming a supportive sling that stretches from the pubic bone to the tailbone These muscles play a crucial role in various bodily functions, including supporting pelvic organs, controlling urinary and bowel functions, and contributing to sexual health. The pelvic floor is all that is holding up all the contents of the trunk, so it needs to be in good working order
Maintaining a strong and functional pelvic floor that is also able to relax (as required during childbirth, defecating, and urinating) as well as lift (when busting to go to the toilet but the door is locked, when sneezing or coughing and not wanting to leak or gas off) A well-functioning pelvic floor is essential for overall health and wellbeing, and some may even say happiness Weakness or dysfunction in these muscles can lead to issues such as urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapses, sexual dysfunction and low self-esteem. Conversely, overactive pelvic floor muscles can also cause discomfort and other complications such as painful sex, and being unable to enjoy activities such as cycling, horse riding or even sitting Therefore, achieving a balanced, functional pelvic floor is key to preventing and addressing these concerns.
Pilates emphasises the importance of a strong core, which includes the muscles of the transversus abdominis, multifidus, and pelvic floor Strengthening these muscles can provide better support for the pelvic organs and enhance overall stability Exercises like the knee drops, knee floats, and knee stirs are excellent for building core strength at a beginner level, which indirectly benefits the pelvic floor
Pelvic floor activation can be cued with these exercises Remember like any muscle, the pelvic floor can get tired, so do not cue a pelvic floor lift for every exercise[cz1] [MOU2] We should not over cue to the point that the pelvic floor is tired So cueing only a few times during a session and not with every exercise. If you were to work the biceps in every single exercise very quickly the biceps will tire The same with the pelvic floor So do not cue in every single exercise but perhaps at the start, middle and end of the session If you notice your client running to the toilet every session after doing a series of abdominals such as the abdominal series on the Ladder Barrel then you know that there is pelvic floor weakness and perhaps these exercises are too strong for this client, or their pelvic floor muscles are too weak for this series of exercises. So intensity and repetitions of this exercise should be reduced so that the client does not need to rush to the toilet after doing these exercises
The Pelvic Floor: Why It Matters
How Pilates Benefits Pelvic Floor Health
Strengthening the Core
Pilates teaches precise muscle control and awareness, helping individuals better engage their pelvic floor muscles By practicing exercises that involve both contraction and relaxation of the pelvic floor, individuals can develop greater control and coordination of these muscles This improved control can help with issues such as incontinence and pelvic pain A great way to gain more awareness of pelvic floor is to practice lifting and relaxing the pelvic floor while sitting on a fit ball, or a rolled-up towel. Here is a short video of this exercise here
I recommend to my clients to practice pelvic floor lifts three times a day. So just a set of 10 lifts to remind them of their pelvic floor muscles A great way to start a Pilates session is to incorporate this exercise as part of the warmup I don’t always use a rolled up towel or fit ball for pelvic floor awareness, but it is great to do to allow clients to become more aware of their pelvic floor muscles. Lately I have been showing my clients this video from the Continence Foundation of Australia on how to lift and release the Pelvic floor
Proper posture and alignment are fundamental principles of Pilates What might surprise you is that misalignment and poor posture can contribute to pelvic floor dysfunction by placing undue pressure on the pelvic organs and muscles Pilates exercises focus on correcting alignment and promoting proper posture, which can relieve unnecessary pressure on the pelvic floor and support its function It’s important to understand that a slouched posture may create more pressure on pelvic floor, so by lengthening through the spine, it can take some downward pressure off the pelvic floor and allow more space for the internal organs A great cue is to lift out of the waist and to lengthen through the crown of the skull to achieve more axial elongation and take downward pressure off the pelvic floor
Flexibility and mobility are essential for maintaining a healthy pelvic floor Pilates includes a range of stretching and mobility exercises that can help improve flexibility in the pelvic region and surrounding muscles For instance, exercises like the cat stretch on the Cadillac, Wunda Chair or Reformer can help release tension and improve flexibility in the pelvic floor, especially in the spinal extension phase of the exercise

Breath control is a key component of Pilates practice Proper breathing techniques can support pelvic floor function by promoting relaxation and reducing tension Breathing can help engage the pelvic floor muscles naturally and can be particularly beneficial for those dealing with pelvic floor tension or discomfort You can cue a lift of pelvic floor with an exhale and relax with an inhale. It’s also important that you cue to relax the belly to assist with relaxing the pelvic floor
Version 8.25 from the Textbook OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology - Published May 18, 2016
There are also many exercises that may be too strong for a weak pelvic floor These include the full hundred, double leg lowers, abdominal exercises with legs in an open kinetic chain, and abdominal curls For people with weak pelvic floor we also need to include exercises to gain awareness of how to relax the pelvic floor, as often a weak pelvic floor may also be unable to relax The best positions for exercise to assist with relaxing the pelvic floor are those that are in a 4 point kneeling position where the pelvic outlet is in a more open position Doing a cat/cow, lifting with the cat phase of the exercise and then relaxing with the extension phase of the exercise. It is a tricky progression, for we eventually want our clients to be able to progress with the Pilates technique, but not at the expense of weakening the pelvic floor
Here is an example of 4 point kneeling for Pelvic floor relaxation here
Incorporating Pelvic floor into Your Pilates Routine
Don’t underestimate that incorporating pelvic floor awareness, activation and relaxation can be a valuable step toward enhancing pelvic floor health For those new to Pilates, I recommend starting with a few foundational exercises incorporating the pelvic floor and gradually progressing to more advanced movements overtime
3. Enhancing Posture and Alignment
Increasing Flexibility and Mobility
It’s also important to note that if someone does have pelvic floor issues, Pilates should be complemented with education on how to go to the toilet without straining, maintaining a balanced diet with lots of fibre, staying hydrated, and seeing a pelvic health Physiotherapist
Pilates is a powerful exercise method that offers numerous benefits for overall health, with an opportunity to gain awareness of the pelvic floor muscles By improving core strength, muscle control, posture, flexibility, and breath awareness, Pilates can play a significant role in enhancing pelvic floor health and addressing related issues Whether you’re new to Pilates or looking to deepen your practice, incorporating pelvic floor awareness activation and relaxation can support a healthier, more balanced pelvic floor and contribute to overall well-being, self-esteem and happiness.
If there was one piece of advice I wish I had known about when first working with clients with a weak pelvic floor would be that you can refer to a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist. Once clients have worked with a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist, they will have much better technique and awareness of how to lift and relax their pelvic floor correctly when you are working with them
In my experience the length of time it takes to strengthen a weakened PF varies depending on several factors from age, gender, and pelvic floor stressor, injury or trauma, but no matter what, exercising the pelvic floor can make a difference. Weather it is a new mum, a man who is recovering from prostate surgery or a post-menopausal woman, pelvic floor exercises will make a difference

THE ETHOS BEHIND THE BODY ORGANICS EDUCATION WAY
by Carla Mullins
“Oh by the way I have (insert a variety of weird conditions)”, these are the words Pilates teachers hear on a regular basis As a teacher we often hear this phrase and start to panic thinking "I am not able to help this person - I don’t know enough” For many years I have lived with this sense of “surely there is someone better who can help this person” Eventually, I realised that the reason why these people land on our doorsteps is because they have a regular team of medical professionals but need movement practitioners able to support them in their functional day to day activities
Unpacking and understanding how to manage clients who are not always healthy and fit, but wanting to take control of that beyond a diet culture is my focus, and I know it is that of many teachers of the Pilates method.

The Strength Behind Vibe Pilates
AIME VAUGHAN ON WHY MERRITHEW EQUIPMENT POWERS HER STUDIOS
by CJ Zarb
For Aime Vaughan, fitness isn’t just a career it’s a way of life After 30 years in the fitness industry, her passion remains unwavering Inspired by her mother, a group aerobics instructor, Aime followed in her footsteps, becoming a group fitness teacher and managing gyms and health clubs before embarking on her own business journey. In 2019, Aime and her ex-business partner opened Vibe Pilates Studios, starting with their first location in Bowen Hills, Queensland, Australia
“I’ve seen it all in the fitness industry,” Aime says. “I knew I couldn’t keep up with high-energy workouts forever, so I turned to Reformer Pilates It’s a form of exercise I could do long-term, and I’ve seen it work wonders for our clients The turning point for them is when they stop dragging their heels and start seeing results that truly resonate with their bodies and lifestyles ”
Vibe Pilates is built on Aime’s vision “I want to help as many people feel better and more comfortable in their own skin.” Her studios, located within YMCA facilities in Bowen Hills, Victoria Point, and Jamboree Heights, have quickly grown into thriving communities
With approximately 14 Merrithew SPX Max reformers per location, the studios offer a diverse range of classes, including Foundation, Total Body Tone, Fit Reformer, Abs Butts and Thighs, Restore and Regain, and the increasingly popular Cardio Tramp classes “We just started offering cardio tramp classes at Victoria Point, and they’ve taken off,” Aime shares. “People are fighting for spots. I even had to purchase two more reformers to meet demand!”
Choosing Merrithew: A Decision That Sets Vibe Apart
From the beginning, Aime knew she wouldn’t compromise on equipment “I chose Merrithew because of the exceptional quality,” she says “I knew we needed premium equipment that would last. I like to say we own the latest and greatest the SPX Max Reformer bundle with the cardio tramp attachment ” The choice has paid off in spades, as the equipment stands up to the demands of Vibe’s high-energy environment “Our reformers are constantly under the pump, especially at Victoria Point. The machines I’ve had for two and half years are just as good as the ones I got two weeks ago They’re built to last,” Aime explains
The Merrithew reformers are more than just durable; they enhance the overall experience for both clients and instructors “The smooth and seamless functionality allows us to focus on the movement, not distractions The straps also lock into place, so we don’t deal with uneven straps mid-class, which is such a gamechanger And we can do planks on the footbar confidently, knowing the machine is sturdy underneath.”
I also believe one of the standout features of the Merrithew reformers is the cardio tramp attachment “It’s great because of its softness,” Aime notes. “The slight give compared to other jump boards provides extra support The feedback from clients and teachers has been amazing They love how it feels, and it’s easy on the joints ”
The versatility of the reformers allows Vibe to cater to a wide range of clients, from teenagers to seniors in their 80s While highenergy classes like Cardio Tramp are popular, there’s also demand for slower-paced sessions like Restore & Regain. “People want to come and stretch on the reformer It’s a great way to relax and reset,” Aime says
True to its name, Vibe Pilates is all about energy and positivity. Neon lights and music add to the welcoming atmosphere, and there’s plenty of laughter during classes “One of the things I love about our studio is the diversity,” Aime says
At the end of the day, Aime believes part of her success is attributed to the equipment she’s chosen to use “You cannot skimp on quality,” she insists “These machines allow us to deliver the best experience to our clients, and that’s what matters most.
The whole Leisure Concepts team were amazing, it was easy to order, and everything was on point Mark and the crew who set up the equipment were fantastic, so approachable and professional. It was a great customer experience ”
As Vibe Pilates continues to grow, Aime’s passion for reformer Pilates and her commitment to quality shine through, creating a space where clients feel supported, challenged, and ready to thrive

Understanding our role in reciprocity
EMBRACE YOUR AUTHENTICITY BY TURNING INWARD AND HONING THE 'SOFT SKILLS' THAT TRULY CONNECT
by Jen Day
y p j y, a teaching background, I think many of us don't Today, fifteen years of teaching later, I am super interested in what I wasn't taught on teacher training programs The 'soft skills' I picked up along the way over years of trial and error. The skills that shaped me as a teacher and helped me navigate my world as a human being The qualities of how to connect, inspire and teach from a grounded, assured place, from the heart
I believe there are some key elements that should be taught alongside teacher training programs that inspire you to teach from a place of authenticity This involves self reflection, a pause from external validation, sourcing and searching, a turn inwards. Pilates teachers love a training program, or is it just me? We are constantly learning, externally sourcing My teaching evolved greatly when I turned my attention inward, understanding myself, my beliefs, traits and imprints.
This inspired me to write a holistic coaching program called The Platinum Crucible A fully supported container to guide a process of self reflection, learning valuable strategies, developing a deeper understanding of connection, creativity and flow To elevate your teaching, understanding your own unique pathway,
y g , pp p us Connection is much needed in our community My aim is to encourage a more collective awareness, more a world of support, care and kindness
I decided to call the Program The Platinum Crucible for many reasons, but second to my story (see below) I like to think that we as Pilates teachers resemble a container, a Platinum (very strong) Crucible. We hold space for others, our studios are a safe space, a place for truth and vulnerability Spaces for learning, exploring, growth and expansion
We all have a unique teaching thumbprint, all from one body of work by the man himself Mr J H Pilates So much has been derived and transcribed since the 1920's when Joseph and Clara opened their "Body Conditioning Gym" in New York City
There are so many variations out there today, so many thumbprints, all valid, all expressions and interpretations welcome What we teach shouldn't be fancy or elitist, just honest, authentic connection.
We hold space for lost connections, to restore balance and
reignite freedom and expression to move well, mind, body and spirit It reaches beyond this, we form deep connections and communities The method is our framework and the depths found within this are expansive beyond words
It’s incredible to think that we can change the collective timeline just by working on ourselves as individuals The one thing that each of us can control in this human experience is ourselves and our own behavior This allows us to truly shine and further our light to others
Why The Platinum Crucible?
A platinum crucible is used to melt other compounds in It has an extremely high melting point, making it super resistant to chemical corrosion The melting point is 1768 degrees C so it can be heated to extremely high temperatures without having to worry about the crucible melting
A Platinum Crucible was given to me by my Father back in 2009 when I had hit rock bottom, I had a breakdown I lost my way The details of which is a story for another day, but it led me to pivot my design career to a holistic Pilates one
One hopeful spring day, my Father 'gifts' me a beaten, tarnished looking bowl in a plastic zip lock bag (it was his way of showing love) He explained it was Platinum and that it was worth a bit of money I remember thinking, is he joking? it looked totally worthless Turns out he was right
I took it to Hatton Gardens I nervously approached a buyer and I accepted his first offer, I probably should have shopped around a bit I was very nervous carrying a large sum of cash through the streets of London I walked from Hatton Gardens to Great Russell Street, to Body Control Pilates and handed over almost the EXACT amount in cash for my first ever pilates training program
Details.
Holding space for others is an extension of you It’s a privileged position that equally allowed me to grow as a teacher and human being, as I progressed through my own teaching journey Each and everyone of us takes responsibility for our own corners, inner activists, tending and befriending, nurturing and supporting Quiet warriors It takes small powerful corners to impact big societal change That is the power of our studios and our work.
Maybe this is what true power is? The Platinum Crucible is designed to support your teaching, it's primarily a self development program, a container where I hope to inspire and support you, to share some tools of transformation, elevating your teaching so that you can give the very best to others It's about reciprocity, who supports you as you hold space for the healing of your community?
Pilates put me back together on so many levels Becoming a teacher helped heal me from the outside in and still to this day it enriches my life beyond words. The connections I have made, the deep Passion and Joy that it provides I do what I do because I believe in the method, in its power, in its inner and outer transformation capabilities, in its history and in its present I could have just honored all of those things by being a student but thanks to my Father and The Platinum Crucible I chose to become a teacher
“My teaching evolved greatly when I turned my attention inward, understanding myself, my beliefs, traits and imprints.”
Today I am inspired to be shaping, supporting and giving back to teachers. Understanding the role of reciprocity, we can create a life filled with deeper connections, growth and success It is the life force that connects us all and I feel privileged to be weaving a part of it
Jen’s training began in 2009 with Body Control Pilates. She has worked with many world-renowned teachers over the last fifteen years. She has supported thousands of people back to health She empowers, inspires and supports movement teachers in finding their unique voice and expression, at whatever stage they’re at on their teaching pathway, to become fully resourced, confident and assured.

In this article, we delve into how Pilates, when integr principles, can empower individuals to move better, about mobility, and improve overall quality of life
What is Mobility?
So, what is mobility? Mobility is defined as flexibility throughout the entire range of motion
Debunking Common Myths
Myth 1: Mobility is the Same as Flexibility
Most people think mobility is just a fancy word for fle internet typically teaches us that mobility is passive with a sprinkle of dynamic flows But mobility is more becoming more bendy - it’s about strength & contro your full range of motion While flexibility refers to passive range of motion - m far you can go when you’re supported - mobility is th control of your joints, muscles, and soft tissue withou of any external force
Pilates teaches us the importance of control and precision, and mobility training takes that one step further by strengthening the muscles at the edges of your movement It’s not just about being flexible it’s about being strong and stable in those end ranges, which improves both performance and injury prevention.
Myth 2: Stretching Alone Reduces Your Risk of Injury
Surprisingly, the latest research has shown that stretching alone will not prevent injury and may even make you more susceptible to it While passive stretching increases flexibility, it doesn’t build the strength and stability needed to protect your joints during movement
To truly reduce injury risk, you need to strengthen your joints and muscles at the edges of their range Functional Range
Conditioning (FRC) does this by combining isometric contractions and progressive overload, preparing your body to handle the demands of extended positions like those frequently required in Pilates
Myth 3: Mobility Only Increases Range of Motion, Not Performance
Mobility training enhances performance by strengthening the brain-to-body connection, improving accuracy and precision in movement patterns FRC mobility training is widely used in professional sports for its ability to integrate the muscles, joints, and nervous system for optimal control and power
In Pilates, this connection is crucial for mastering the intricate, controlled movements that require both strength and precision, elevating your practice to new heights
3 Surprising Ways That Mobility Will Impact Your Pilates Practice: Unlocking More Strength Gains
The greater range of motion that we have, the more muscle fibers we have access to When we push to the edges of our range of motion, we are able to access those often neglected areas of the body that end up leveling up our strength and shaping our muscles in the way we desire For example, leveling up your mobility may allow you to go deeper in the scooter position due to increased muscle strength and range of motion.
Activate The Right Muscles
We’ve all had the experience of knowing an exercise is meant to be targeting the upper back, but only feeling it in the neck and upper traps I have had countless people complain to me that in Pilates they know they're meant to feel their abs working, but half the time they just feel their lower back A primary benefit of mobility training is building neurological connections, or as I like to say, we are building telephone lines from the brain to the body (mobility will teach you how to relax muscles that don’t need to be activated) Once you develop that neurological connection, you have the ability to engage what you'd like to engage and relax what you'd like to relax This aids in injury prevention, fixing imbalance, and development of the correct muscles
Increasing Your Confidence
Building strength throughout your entire range of motion creates a deeper level of self trust in your body You realise your limits and with more neurological control, you're able to perform exercises that you may have previously shied away from. We all want to step into Pilates with absolute confidence that we can handle anything the trainer gives us Mobility training is your secret ingredient to doing just that

Building Community Through Movement
HOW VENNU YOGA STUDIOS GREW INTO A THRIVING WELLNESS COMMUNITY BY PRIORITIZING INCLUSIVITY, AFFORDABILITY, AND A STRONG SENSE OF CONNECTION
by CJ Zarb
In the heart of Millbrae, California, a transformative journey has unfolded over the past few years, spearheaded by a woman whose vision was as ambitious as it was inclusive Leila Kirsch, the CEO of Vennu Yoga Studios, embarked on a path not as a Pilates teacher, but as a passionate advocate for community wellness Today, Vennu Yoga Studios stands as a beacon of health, diversity, and connection, with three thriving locations offering a wide range of fitness classes, including a dedicated Pilates Reformer studio
A Vision Rooted in Community
Leila’s journey into the Pilates industry is unique Unlike many studio owners who start as instructors, Leila's approach has always been from a leadership and community-building perspective "You might be surprised to know I’m not a Pilates teacher," she says "I’m the CEO of the Studio My vision is to build a community studio for everyone to enjoy and develop a safe space for students to practice " This vision has been the cornerstone of her success, guiding every decision she has made since opening her first studio Leila was initially inspired to venture into the Pilates industry after witnessing the benefits of Pilates Reformer exercises She saw firsthand how Pilates could aid in injury recovery by strengthening core muscles, improving flexibility, and offering low-impact rehabilitation Recognising these benefits, she knew she wanted to create a space where people could experience the transformative power of Pilates in a supportive, communityfocused environment
Establishing Core Values and Expanding Horizons
When Leila established her first studio in Millbrae, her guiding principles were clear: promote health and wellness, help others achieve their fitness goals, and create a welcoming, supportive community for all She also wanted to ensure that her studio was accessible to everyone, particularly in terms of affordability. "The core values and vision that guided me were promoting health and wellness, helping others achieve their fitness goals, and
creating a welcoming and supportive community for all," she explains "I wanted to build a place that was affordable for the community as well "
These values have remained steadfast even as Leila expanded Vennu Yoga Studios to three locations within two years. The rapid growth was a testament to the strength of her vision and the community she had cultivated To manage this growth while maintaining the quality and ethos of her brand, Leila made it a priority to be present for her students and offer a variety of class styles to meet their diverse needs and preferences
Fostering Diversity, Inclusion, and Affordability
One of the key goals for Leila was to create a studio environment that was not only diverse and inclusive but also affordable She implemented strategies to make her offerings accessible to a broader audience, including lowering membership costs to ensure sustainability and providing free community classes to attract a wide range of participants "My strategy to make the studio accessible and affordable for the community was to lower the costs to ensure memberships were sustainable," Leila explains "Additionally, my marketing strategy included providing free community classes to attract a wider range of audience members "
This approach has been instrumental in building a diverse and vibrant community within Vennu Yoga Studios Leila’s commitment to affordability has made it possible for people from all walks of life to access high-quality fitness classes, fostering a sense of connection and belonging among members.
A New Chapter: The Pilates Reformer Studio
Leila’s decision to open a third studio, dedicated to Pilates Reformer, marked a significant milestone in the Vennu Yoga Studios journey This addition was motivated by her desire to offer a differentiated experience and to meet the growing demand for Reformer Pilates classes "My motivation to open a third studio was to differentiate it from other studios by offering a wide variety of classes," she says
However, this expansion came with its own set of challenges Managing different membership structures and ensuring a seamless booking process were among the hurdles Leila had to overcome Yet, her determination and adaptability allowed her to navigate these challenges successfully, further solidifying Vennu Yoga Studios' reputation as a leader in the fitness community
Building a Strong, Female-Led Team
At the heart of Vennu Yoga Studios’ success is its team of skilled instructors Leila takes pride in the fact that her team, which now consists of 23 female instructors across the three studios, is not only talented but also aligned with the studio’s mission and values. "Our instructors were initially found through word of mouth, and our internal team was trained to become Reformer Pilates instructors," Leila shares "All of our instructors are different and have different teaching skills We suggest to everyone a style that suits them, and that’s what makes them special "
Leila’s leadership has created an environment where these instructors can thrive, bringing their unique strengths to the table while contributing to the overall mission of the studio The fact that Vennu Yoga Studios is led by a female business owner and staffed by an all-female team is a source of pride and inspiration for the entire community.
Looking Ahead: A Future of Possibilities
As Vennu Yoga Studios continues to grow, Leila remains focused on finding new ways to innovate and offer fitness solutions to her community "We are committed to continuously finding new ways to innovate and offer fitness solutions to our community " As Vennu Yoga Studios looks to the future, it’s clear that the community Leila has built will continue to flourish, offering health, wellness, and connection to all who walk through its doors
Leila Kirsch is the passionate founder of Vennu Yoga & Pilates studio, a thriving studio established in Millbrae in 2021 With a deep-rooted commitment to building a strong and supportive community, Leila has created a space where individuals can come together to explore their practice and foster connections.
